Book Description

When Simon’s older sister, Adèle, picks him up from school, he has his hat and gloves and scarf and sweater, his coat and knapsack and books and crayons, and a drawing of a cat he made that morning. Adèle makes Simon promise to try not to lose anything. But as they make their way home, distractions cause Simon to leave something behind at every stop. What will they tell their mother?

Detailed pen-and-ink drawings – filled with soft watercolors – make a game of this unforgettable tour through the streets and scenes of early-twentieth-century Paris. Illustrated endpapers extend the fun by replicating a 1907 Baedeker map of Paris.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-09-24

This is a delightful book that I purchased for my five year old granddaughter. She enjoys looking for the lost items.

Simon keeps loosing his things and imagine my surprise when my granddaughter decided I should be called Simon since I had misplaced my glasses and found them again.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated.......2007-07-30

I discovered this book at our local book store and fell in love with it immediately. My 3 1/2 year daughter found it equally enthralling and she loves to pick out all the lost items along the tale of the story. The historic locations really set this book apart.

What I found most interesting however is the section in the back of the book. It has mini-illustrations of each page and provides information on the location of each backdrop, when things were built, etc., and other historical tidbits, some regarding why children like [that particular park], for example. My daugher loves that section as well and always chooses a couple for me to read aloud to her. It's a great addition to a children's library.

5 out of 5 stars An unqualified masterpiece...!.......2007-07-29

I'm a big fan of Barbara McClintock's work, and this is perhaps her finest book to date, a gorgeously detailed romp through Paris in the pre-World War era. Adele and Simon are a sister-brother pair whose afterschool adventures take them to various Parisian landmarks, and along the way Simon loses almost all his school supplies and half his clothes, with Adele, the older sister, desperately trying to maintain some semblance of order. Both the writing and the artwork are of the highest order: this is an intelligent, beautifully rendered children's book -- a real class act. (ReadThatAgain!)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book in a lovely Parisian setting.......2007-03-26

This is a wonderful book about a big sister and her little brother who is constantly losing things. What is especially enchanting are the wonderfully detailed illustrations. Look for each lost item on each page. There are also a few of McClintock's hidden surprises within the pages.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite.......2007-03-18

My 4 year old Daughter absolutely loves this book. She relates, since she has a little brother like the character Adele. The illustrations are georgeous. This is definetely a favorite for mother and daughter :)

Three Sisters. Three Lives. Three Hearts. Reunited in a Stunning Drama of Passion and Secrets.

Charity
Beautiful, bold and uncertain of love after being abandoned as on infant, Charity is bewildered by Kane Longstreet's marriage proposal. Despite her misgivings, she agrees to go home with Kane for the holidays. But at his cousin's engagement party at Hawk's Pride, she gets the shock of her life when she comes face-to-face with identical twin sisters Hope and Faith Butler, and sees a mirror image of herself.

Hope
The stunning discovery that she is a triplet does little to distract Hope from her own personal heartbreak. The man she has loved all her life, Jake Whitelaw, is about to marry someone else. With only two weeks until the wedding, she needs a miracle. And thanks to her determined sisters, she might just get it.

Faith
Fearing that her parents gave Charity up for adoption because of her own special needs as a child, Faith is consumed by guilt. She vows to see both her sisters happy, no matter what it takes. That means she's got to break up one wedding, arrange a couple more . . . and seize her own chance for happiness.

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-04-02

I had to finish the whole book. Hard to put down and do other things.

4 out of 5 stars Ms Johnston is awesome.......2006-07-07

I have read several of Ms Johnston's books and found that this was one of my favourites. I do wish that it had focused more on Jake and Hope but still enjoyed it. As for the age difference between the two main characters, I have no problem with that. Speaking from experience, this does happen in real life and I could follow along with the situation.

We must remember that the novels that are written by Ms Johnston and other authors are fictional and meant to remove us from reality for the short bit of time it takes us to read them.

Keep up the good work as I can't wait to enjoy more. I'm already looking to find all the other books from Hawk's Way.

4 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.......2004-11-20

I liked this book, but there were a few things about it that bothered me. I don't care for the age difference between two characters to be more than ten years. In this story Jake admits to being attracted to Hope while she was in high school and he was in his mid thirties. I also didn't like the reason for giving Charity up for adoption. It made me mad and I hated the way they treated Charity. It would have been more believable if there had been a rift left between Charity and her biological family. The two characters I liked in the book most were Rabb and Amanda. It's a good book but there are details that can be bothersome to some readers.

1 out of 5 stars A Nice Fairy Tale.......2004-08-20

My first Joan Johnston book and I hope this is not the best example of her stories. I found this preposterous. What a dumb story line. I agree totally with the other reviewers on the pitiful reason to give away one of triplets. If they couldn't afford all three, they should have adopted all three out to a family that could raise and love them without separating them.

And to be able to pull off a triple wedding in one week, we all know that's not possible with full custom made gowns. Evidently the "poor" parents didn't have to pay for 3 weddings. I don't think I'm interested in reading any other of the Hawkes Way series.

4 out of 5 stars Fun reading on the beach.......2003-09-15

The triplets Charity, Hope and Faith unexpectedly meet face-to-face at someone's engagement party. There are thousands of adoptees out there who wished they too would run into their biological family at someone's party or in the grocery store. I am the adoptive mother of a now 34-year old daughter and had to smile, on reading this book, how nice fiction can be. Our daughter is now reunited with her two sisters, but the event took 29 years to become reality. Now I imagine Hope wanting eight children with Jake, both adopted and natural, and Jake agrees, that 'eight sounds just fine.' For Hope's sake, that number will remain fiction!

    Book Description

Lost and Found Sound and Beyond is the second anthology of greatest hits from the Peabody Award winning Lost and Found Sound radio series, heard over the last five years on NPR's All Things Considered. A collection of eccentric, endangered and undiscovered sounds and oral traditions, this special two-hour recording provides a glimpse of the aural legacy of our country. This gathering of unique stories is the product of a sprawling nationwide collaboration of independent radio producers, artists, musicians, archivists, writers, NPR, public radio stations and listeners. Lost and Found Sound was produced by two-time Peabody Award winning producers, The Kitchen Sisters (Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson) with Jay Allison, and hosted by film legend Francis Ford Coppola. A sound hound himself, Coppola weaves these twelve richly-layered radio documentaries together with his own stories, reminiscences and home recordings, including his 1977 "interview" with five-year-old daughter Sofia Coppola about what she wants to be when she grows up. The stories include a surprising tale of Liberace and The Trinidad Tripoli Steelband, the saga of Sun Studios producer Sam Phillips, and narratives from Mohawk Indian ironworkers at the Twin Towers and Vietnamese manicurists in America.

    5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth harvested!.......2002-01-22

This centenary series of the Complete Works is a major accomplishment. Volume I ('I Have Found God') goes right to the heart of Elizabeth's mystical vocation with a positively riveting General Introduction by Conrad De Meester, O.C. D., followed by a brilliant translation of Elizabeth's writings by Alethia Kane. Elizabeth's four major spiritual treatises being written in the last three months of her life, it's difficult to go anywhere but to the distinct heart of her message. I doubt that I've ever read a more enlightened essay on Elizabeth than De Meester's. If you look to understand who this woman was, read his perfect Introduction; taken together with a brief biography, he produces an ancient Elizabeth in an essential light. His appreciation burns with real insight into an obscured message and an authentic modern mystic. Kane leaves Elizabeth's voice alone, as other translators have not, making Kane's courageous, and ultimately peerless contribution the more valuable by leagues. Highest recommendation for Vols. I & II-- it's a champion series.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great story for you ballet/cat loving girl........2003-05-24

I bought this book for my three and a half year old daughter because it centers around a ballet loving girl (much like herself) and her cat (another great love of hers). The story is about Dolores who loves ballet so much that she tries to include her best friend Duncan the cat in her plans for attending tutu day at ballet school. Of course as anyone who knows anything about cats knows, cats do not like to be dressed up let alone in a ballet tutu. When Duncan decides to hide in order to avoid the dreaded tutu day it is up to Dolores the ballerina/dectective/pet psychotherapist to find him. Using all of her best locating skills she finally uncovers Duncan hiding under her bed just in time to accompany her to tutu day. Much to Duncans relief his attendance is that of a special guest rather than a participant. The underlying theme of this book is that is okay for best friends to not always like the same things. Dolores needed to respect the fact that cats do not like to perform ballet. I highly recommend this book. It is already a favorite in our house.

        Book Description

Is it harder to be a wife or work at McDonalds?

Single women who want to be married are learning it's easier said than done. With over half of marriages ending in divorce, groups of single women are gathering together to discover what it means to be a wife. "The average new fast food employee gets a one week orientation," says Michelle Boasten, founder of My Heart in His Hands Ministries. "What's harder, being a wife or a burger flipper? If the burger flipper gets a week of training, should a woman who wants to be a wife get at least a week of orientation?"

The My Heart in His Hands Movement began with Boasten interviewing scores of women who shared their single and married experiences. She had one goal in mind: save your marriage before it starts. As she interacted with other single women they also wanted to learn the keys to a good marriage.

Single women are frustrated with meeting men who don't want a committed relationship. Recognizing this, Boasten turned to the married women and men who revealed many secrets about spotting the needle in the haystack. Single women who desire to be married want results. They want to meet a good man and they want a good marriage.

Groups can start with just one single woman who wants to gain wisdom, insight and knowledge about finding a good man and having a good marriage. If you cannot find a group in your area all you need to get started is one girlfriend who shares the same goal. Boasten provides a free group facilitator guide on-line with instructions on how to start your own group.

Mrs. Robin Freeman of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio started a home group. She currently has five women who meet once a week for eight weeks. When asked "Does it work?" Freeman enthusiastically responds, "Yes!"

        5 out of 5 stars Above all things get W I S D O M!.......2002-07-23

This book is fantastic!!! Never before have I read a book with such powerful insight and conviction. The book is not an easy, instant gratification type of read. It is a focused read. I found myself reading and placing it down just so I could process the areas of application in my life. I got angry reading this book -- because it was revealing areas in my life that I NEEDED CORRECTION in. The book is not for the meek at heart nor the disobedient. This is a book that calls you to accountability of God's word. It is the litmus test for life. A put up or shut up type of book. Are you FINALLY going to do as God says?? OR are you going to do what your will wants to do and ignore God altogether??

You have to answer that for yourself! My Church is now doing a women's seminar with the book and accompanying workbook. It doesn't matter if you are 8 to 80, blind, crippled or crazy. Married or Single. This book is a MUST READ!!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book if you are believing God for a husband!.......2002-05-10

        The Introduction
Explains an all too familiar story of a couple. The Bill & Jill story is one most of us can relate to. Also explains this book is for Saved Single Sisters, but the brothers should read it too.

        Chapter 1 - Hope Deferred
The pain of singleness is not removed by marriage. Many married women are in shock when they discover more pain in marriage than the pain in singleness. The root of the pain in singleness is the same root of the pain in marriage. How true!

Chapter 2 - Break It Down
Most women don't enter a marriage with the hope of disappointment. Learning about relationships is the first step to enjoying your singleness and your marriage. The first of the 7 relationship concepts is taught in this chapter, the relationship characters.

Chapter 3 - Build It Up
This chapter explains the other six concepts. If you master these concepts you will never ever be confused about men, dating, mating and relating. They are the relationship rings, the double play, the governing rules, intimacy and acceptance, motivation and intent and the relationship fix-it tool.

        Chapter Four - The Breakdown
Relationships fail due to the breakdown of one or more of the 7 relationship concepts. Each broken relationship concept has consequences. The single reader has the blessed opportunity to gain wisdom and insight about the cause and consequence of relationship breakdown before you enter your marriage.

        Chapter Five - The Gift?
Christian singles may have heard of "the gift of singleness." Is this an oxymoron? Aren't gifts supposed to be good? The gift of singleness is often misunderstood. As a result many singles are not free to enjoy the real gift of singleness because it is often wrongly taught as the gift of celibacy. Celibacy is not a gift, sex is the gift... of marriage. The gift of singleness is freedom from spousal responsibility, accountability and liability.

Chapter Six - The Marriage Hoax
Every aspect from your thinking about marriage through to the marriage itself is discussed. The marriage hoax, the meeting hoax, the dating hoax, the mating hoax, the wedding hoax, the wife hoax and the mother hoax.

Chapter Seven - The Marriage Hope
God has designed marriage for many wonderful purposes. When you submit to God's way you set the stage for God to work in and through yourself, your spouse, your marriage and your children.

        Chapter Eight - Hope Fulfilled
Get ready to meet your mate! You are just one prayer away from having your hopes fulfilled. When you put your heart in God's hands you have taken the first step to getting every hope fulfilled. God wants to bless his obedient daughters! The condition is your obedience, not based on rules, but on your relationship with God.
