4 out of 5 stars Politics and Intrigue, wrapped in a Periphery-coated shell.......1998-08-31

While on the surface the novel seems to be about Avanti's Angels, a (sometimes) down-on-it's-luck mercenary unit, the true focus of the story brings a number of major powers, both of the Inner Sphere and of the Periphery, into a head-on collision on a remote planet in the Periphery, leaving the Angels squarely in the middle.

It takes more than PFM (Pure F...ing Magic) to get them out... and not necessarily in one piece, either...

Double Blind is a book that should be read by any true BattleTech fan, every Game Master looking for a new hook, and especially all of you Word of Blake and Periphery nuts out there.

4 out of 5 stars Great story and characters........1998-08-06

I picked this book up after reading Loren's other Battletech book - Binding Force (No. 32). Double-Blind is an enjoyable read. Good characters, a well-paced storyline and homage to the history of the Battletech universe help make this book a great read. This novel falls slightly short of Binding Force, but remains a worthy addition to the collection. Several aspects of this book are exceptional, and I'm looking forward to more novels from Mr. Coleman.

3 out of 5 stars Fantastic setting but falls flat.......1998-07-09

The author of this book obviously had some great knowledge of battletech history and has written this book in a style that references past events very well. However the biggest let-down of this book is the writing style of the battle sequences. Loren might say something like The missile hit his mech on the side carving off nearly 3 tons of armor, and then later she looked at the damage report and it showed that she only had 2 tons of armor left on the head of her mech. Or in the post-battle scenes... Still she had managed to salvage a couple of small lasers and several tons of armor It feels as if it is describing a battletech boardgame tournament where mech tonnage and armor levels matter more than a good description. it's hard to explain but if you read this book you will know what I mean.

Book Description

December 1, 1941

It is seven days before the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. Days that are numbered for Sondegger, a Nazi spy captured in London while on a mission to take down the Twenty Committee, a German network of spies the British have turned.

For American Tom Wall, the days have run together as he awakens to find himself locked in a British military asylum. Wounded and shell-shocked, all he knows is that his brother, Earl, betrayed Tom’s unit in Crete, causing one of the bloodiest masacres of the war.

Now Tom has to pretend to be his brother, and try to force Sondegger to reveal what he knows about the Twenty Committee. But Sondegger also knows about the Japanese plan of attack, and Tom may be able to prevent it. But should he?

An electrifying debut that combines political insight with the classic elements of espionage fiction–here is a Nazi spy novel you won’t be able to put down.

Joel Ross studied history at Hampshire College and taught English abroad for a short time before writing Double Cross Blind, his first novel. His father served in WWII, along with all five of his uncles, and their stories provided some of the background for the book. Currently, Ross lives in Maine with his wife, Lee.

3 out of 5 stars Strong idea but muddled execution .......2007-10-08

The book takes place mostly in London in the first week of December 1941.The war is not going well for the Allies -which do not yet include the USA as the attack on Pearl Harbour is yet to take place .London is subject to nightly air raids from the Germans and has recently lost Crete to the German army. Its one asset lies in "Operation Double Cross"by which the German spy network in Britain has been "turned" and is feeding misinformation to the Germans .A German agent ,Sonndeburg, has been sent from German intelligence to London and seems on the verge of exposing this .He is captured but manages to escape
The protagonist is an American Tom Wall ,who has enlisted in the British Army and believes his brother has betrayed the Allies in Crete .he is searching for his brother aided by his sister in law ,Harriet Wall who is a British agent at odds with her father a prominent British Fascist who sets his own men against Tom

The plot is over complicated and takes too long to get going resulting in a sense of mounting impatience on my part .The scenario -which also revolves around the impending Japanese attack on the USA -is intriguing but the signs of a tyro novelist are everywhere and it just dfrags when it should be getting into top gear

There is promise here and I would assume the faults common to a debut novelist will be ironed out in subsequent books -I sincerely hope so at any rate becuase Mr Ross is a good stylist and shows a gift for suspense which bodes well for any futire books

4 out of 5 stars Interesting History.......2006-12-08

A "classic spy tale," DOUBLE CROSS BLIND is a thriller in pre-World War II England, and the author obviously performed intense research on that historical era. The story line (which includes a number of flashbacks) is loosely based on a real-life event ... a network of German spies that the English turned into counterspies. RAF Pilot Tom Wall is dragged into the espionage when his brother (an MI-5 agent) disappears. The story also provides engaging insight into the political intrigue with which England initially tried to entice America into the war.

This is the author's first novel, and his writing is intelligent, but it also incorporates the idiomatic vocabulary and grammar of 1939/40 London, which modern American readers may find a bit difficult. However, the author's character development is a particularly strong part of the book, and his story's love interest between the brothers and the heroine (Harriet) quickly grabs the reader's interest. In fact, all the book's characters (including the German spies and Harriet's diplomat father) are fully-developed and believable. The reader's imagination is piqued from the opening chapter all the way to the end.

Ross has launched a promising career with this book. He paced the story well, and the plot lines finally dovetail into an entertaining ending that is a real "aha!" moment.

I recommend this book to any reader with an interest in the espionage genre.

2 out of 5 stars A Hard Read.......2006-10-03

...for this lover of World War II novels. Usually I'm a sucker for any novel with a red swastika on the cover and this book provided the necessary bait.

My library includes some 700 WWII novels. If properly motivated by a good story line and historical accuracy, I'm one who can finish a good book in two to three days. But "Double Cross Blind" took a Herculean effort on my part to finish in just over three weeks. I wanted to like this book (the basic storyline of the German's tipping off the USA about Pearl Harbor to keep the USA out of the war is certainly plausible and interesting), but this rookie author certainly showed his rough edges with his first novel.

First of all, the storyline is exceptionally thin...events move too quickly and are very underdeveloped. The main character, shell-shocked American Tom Wall, is constantly escaping and being reinstated in his psycho ward...c'mon one or two attempts is enough. He is constantly on the lam and getting beaten up, only to survive to be beaten up again. Secondly, the author introduces some characters (and makes feeble attempts to develop their role) only to have them die off without impacting the main storyline or hero...i.e. a bright British intelligence officer is suddenly blown up halfway through the book (leaving us to put up with his dull supervisor as the hero's helpmeet. Or there's "Duckblind" the female German agent. The reader follows Duckblind throughout the entire novel and just when you think her and Tom Wall's storylines will intersect, she comes across a bad character in the dark and is randomly killed (all in two paragraphs). Thirdly, the author enjoys including a number of trite, over-worn literary descriptions and expressions throughout the book...then I guess a good editor could have fixed that.

My recommendation: Don't fall for the red swastika bait - or have at least 3 weeks dedicated to reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars A new espionage classic.......2006-06-22

Joel Ross has written a riviting first novel in the vein of Le Carre, Gerald Seymour and other masters of the modern espionage thriller. Well written with strong characters, the book grips one immediately and the plot is inventive and entertaining. Ross evokes a picture of wartime London with a keen eye and vivid language. Anyone who enjoys this genre will be pleased to welcome a very talented new author to historical espionage fiction.

3 out of 5 stars An OK read........2006-02-25

I purchased the book after reading a favorable review. I read the book with mixed emotions. It was an interesting story and a fast read. But I found the protagonist's ablity to be mugged, tortured, cut and generally beat up and then bounce back and zoom all over wartime London subduing the bad guys a bit hard to believe. His resilience makes James Bond look like an amature.
It's a good vacation read as long as you don't take the participants too seriously.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY - A FEMALE WHO SHOOTS BACK!.......2007-03-20

Go Girl. You live up to your profession.

Will Shannon is confused and on the run. His employer, Greg Vincent, whom he did like, was shot with Will's own gun. The police showed up a little too conveniently fast.

In his confusion he heads for his former partner and lover, Caitlyn Malone who offers to doctor his creased arm. No Doctors or hospitals, they just report you. He needed sleep in order to see straight, Cait didn't object, he looked so vulnerable asleep.

Something just didn't smell right as she passed through one room. Then someone smothered her mouth and nose. Finally she sensed the danger when a knife touched her throat.
To make a bit of a tale short, Will came out shooting [after a pause to locate Cait], two more dead bodies in the line-up.

He grabbed Cait and was on the run again. Quite a neat little tale in the finding of his waiter, Cait suspected that the man drugged Will. Whoops, another body to add to the list.

Cait wondered if Will should turn himself in. Will was determined to contact Paul Fisk, a lawyer friend to get help.
He took Cait to Fisk's folks summer house to hide out. No one should bother her there. He then agreed to turn himself in. Yeah! right, someone had other ideas. Sniper! Wow, did he blow out of there.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Paul had sent Douglas Reamer to guard Cait.
Seems like Will is headed back to Cait. Cait has an eiry feeling about the noise she heard. She made it to the back door. Add another body to the count. She hides in the bathroom as someone comes in the front door.
Wow! add two more to the body count. Hey, that gal can shoot.

I leave you to figure out the killers. And the whole story which I admit was had to put down. Cait is emotionally starved and wants Will back.
But their secrets haunt them.

Fast paced action - great mystery - finally a gal with guts enough to shoot back - Definitely you got to read this one.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- Only slow spot is where they get down and dirty.

4 out of 5 stars More like four and a half stars.......2006-10-02

Will Shannon awakes disoriented to find the man he had sworn to guard with his life, shot in the head with Will's own gun. Not remembering anything from the night before and hearing the sound of police siren's quickly approaching the house, Will flees the crime scene knowing that if he stays, he will be charged with a murder he did not commit.

The only person he trusts is his former Secret Service partner Cait. She is also his former lover. The two have not spoken in two years after an assasignation plot went horribly askew leaving them both without jobs and blaiming themselves for the consequences. With the gunmen chasing them down and setting the stage to set Will up even further, Will and Cait struggle to unravel the mystery of what really happened that night before and why. But will they have enough time to find the evidence before the killer's catch up to them and will they ever be together again?

This was a heart pounding, non stop suspense novel. I was a little disappointed that the story line never hinted much to an alternate scenario, leaving it a little predictable once you start getting into it, but nevertheless, it was a very good read.

Is it worth buying? Definitely. A good romantic suspense novel.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced romantic suspense.......2005-11-26

Former Secret Service Agent Will Shannon wakes up with a headache and a dead client in the next room. He knows he's got trouble, so he turns to the one person he knows that he can trust, his former lover and partner Caitlyn Malone. Caitlyn has always felt guilty for not standing up for Will when he was used as a Secret Service scapegoat. She's never gotten over her feelings for him either. Caitlyn is determined to do whatever it takes to help keep him from taking the fall for a murder he didn't commit. Now they are on the run together trying to figure out who killed Will's client and tried to frame him. They are also falling in love again. Can they figure out who the killer is before it's too late?

Double Blind is a fast-paced romantic suspense that I truly enjoyed. Will and Caitlyn's past relationship adds an emotional depth to the story that had me rooting for them from the start. Add to this a well-developed suspense storyline, and Gayle Wilson delivers a story that is a must read for lovers of romantic suspense.

Bodyguard Will Shannon awakens to find himself with a severe headache, a terrible case of vertigo and on the floor of the living room in his employer's mansion. He has no idea how he got there with his last recollection being at a restaurant while his client drug mogul Greg Vincent dined. He manages to finally get up to go check on Greg who he finds in the man's bed dead, a bullet to his head fired from Will's gun. When he hears a car brake, he realizes the cops have arrived, but wonders who called them. Trying to sneak away to buy time, he is shot in his left arm.

Will has no place to go except his former Secret Service partner Caitlyn Monroe, who he loved. She insists he see a doctor and call the police, but he refuses insisting the frame is too perfect. Will believes he must solve the case to prove his innocence; Cait reluctantly agrees to help him even while thinking how their love for one another back when they were teammates cost them both so much professionally and personally.

DOUBLE BLIND is an exhilarating continual action thriller that never slows down until the final confrontation as the police and FBI seek Will as their prime suspect while he must elude them to buy time to prove his innocence. Book Description

Stanford geneticist Hopkins Grinder is so desperate to save his children from the trauma of divorce that he hires a hobbyist seducer to placate his unhappy wife. A few weeks later, a co-worker hands him an Internet address, and he discovers his wife on a hidden-camera porn site. Double Blind takes on the strange Puritan/pervert dichotomy of America's sexual politics with some darkly hilarious - and, at times, unexpectedly poignant - results. From the award-winning author of Gabriella's Voice and Frosted Glass.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A 21st-century "Thin Man" .......2007-07-09

"Double Blind" is notable not just for its graphic sexual passages--of which there are plenty--but for the underlying mystery that envelopes the book's anti-hero. Like Dashiell Hammett's protagonist, Hopkins Grinder uses questionable means to produce his desired ends, and in the process, he finds that the people he's manipulating have their own quasi-ethical agendas. And as in any worthy "Thin Man" installment, the trouble in "Double" arrives in the female form.
Vaughn's characters are sympathetic, if not necessarily likeable. These are people who should know better, but given their complex backstories, their lapses in judgment are both understandable and intriguing.
While "Double Blind" draws you in with ilicit sex and other amoral goodies, its intricate storylines keep you interested. In just 90 pages, Vaughn manages to say a lot about how sexual politics and family values make for strange bedfellows.

4 out of 5 stars A New Kind of Erotica.......2007-07-03

Think you have heard, seen, or read everything that there is to offer on the subject of sex? If you have ever read anything like Michael J. Vaughn's "Double Blind," it would surprise me greatly. The book is about a family man, Hopkins, who has been having an affair with a mistress - for the sake of his marriage and keeping his children from a broken home. Wait - there is more. He then hires a man who knows said mistress to seduce his wife so that she will once again be pleasant. Everything goes along according to Hopkins' plan, until his wife ends up on an internet porn site. The story goes from there into realms no one would ever imagine. The plot twists are very interesting and incredibly different than what one would expect. The actual sex scenes are not the highlight of the book, unlike most fiction that fits into the erotica label. They do exist, and they are written well, but the better parts of the book deal with the fight of lust that Hopkins deals with on a day to day basis, which does not involve his wife. What separates this book from any other book about a cheating husband is that he adores and loves his children, and makes every move with their best interest in mind. It is interesting to imagine extra-marital sex to help a marriage, but this is where Vaughn shines. He is incredibly good at taking a subject that has been done over and over again to the point of banality (like sex) and making it not only intriguing, but worth doing over again. Having read other books by Vaughn ("Frosted Glass" and my particular favorite - and quite possibly my favorite book ever - "Gabriella's Voice), I was thrilled to be able to read another offering. It was very short (approx. 90 pages), but with so much plot, writing nuance, and character intrigue, it reads more like a well crafted short story/novella than a full-length novel. This feature made the book appeal to me even more - I already knew that Vaughn could write a brilliant novel, but I had yet to see his work in the shorter venues. I would love to see a collection of short stories by him eventually. I give this book four out of five stars simply for the fact that I have enjoyed other books by Vaughn more, although it may quite possibly be my own bias of subject matter. That being said, I have read other "erotica" and this is by far the most appealing book of the genre that I have read. Vaughn is a consummate writer, who puts subtle nuance into every offering. He should be read, enjoyed, and re-read often.

5 out of 5 stars An extraordinary plot, extremely well written and VERY sensual!.......2007-06-20

You would normally expect an erotic novel to be light on substance and style. Not with this one! I was immediately drawn in by the initial lurid scene that is every straight-man's fantasy; but was soon motivated to turn pages by the complexity of the plot, depth of the concept, and quality of the prose. This story is entertaining yet uncomfortably insightful about the male libido and our adjustment to a monogamously-defined world. You will never anticipate an ending like this one.
It is an unfortunately short read - I'd like to spend more time with these characters. But, it is a complete, densely-packed story and leaves little behind except for one character. But, then, don't we all leave someone behind and never know how they end up?

Henry Lightstone, the Fish and Wildlife Service's top undercover agent, has been sent with his team on a sting operation to the Pacific Northwest. Posing as corrupt animal smugglers looking to bag some illegal game, they are hoping to bag some illegal gamers. He'll have a lot of obstacles cross his path: a crooked congressman, a ruthless coalition of industrialists, a traitorous Army Ranger hunter-killer team team, and a band of crazy, gun-toting, right-wing woodsmen, to name a few. All in all, though, it's nothing Henry Lightstone can't handle.

4 out of 5 stars Turning Pages While Screaming & Laughing.......2004-07-16

This is easily my favorite Ken Goddard book, and I've now read them all. Like other Goddard thrillers, the pace is fast and the story builds in complexity as it unfolds. He described and portrayed one of the "bad guys" (the gray-eyed Wintersole) so well that the memory of him still gives me the willies. There's a lot of tension coupled with a lot of laughs, which I did not expect. But I found I thoroughly enjoyed Goddard's sense of humor, and Henry Lightstone has become one of my favorite fiction action guys.

This book -- with its quirky blend of natural and supernatural, tension and humor -- is different than his previous books and he heads into some rather peculiar territory, but it's a 'landscape' I enjoy, also being a fan of James Rollins novels. I also enjoy the natural landscape of Double Blind (the wetland areas of southern Oregon) and how Goddard draws us into it. Hint to the author: I want to read more Henry Lightstone-centered books, so write them, okay?

    3 out of 5 stars Not Ken Goddard's best..........1999-03-22

Double Blind is the third entry into the Henry Lightstone series by Ken Goddard. Goddard seems to be slipping with each succesive entry in the series. Goddard started with an idea that had a lot to offer, but in the end the result is disappointing. Lightstone and his team of Federal Wildlife Agents are set up for elimination by a crack team of ex-military "hunter-killers". Lightstone is a good character and he is surrounded by an interesting cast of characters. Goddard's experience in Law Enforcement is readily apparent in his writing. The story begins to drag when Lightstone's team attempts to set up their undercover operation. Goddard spends a great deal of time with this device and it does nothing to progress the story. Goddard continually refers to Lightstone as the team's "wild-card agent", along with several other similar monikers, throughout the story and it really begins to grate on your nerves. I was left feeling cheated with a quick ending that tied-up all of the loose ends too easily. Goddard spent 450+ pages setting up a showdown which never materialized. Double Blind was not Goddard at his best, but he is still a lot better than many of the authors in this genre. Readers interested in Goodard's better books should read Balefire, Cheater, and Prey.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to his previous efforts........1998-12-22

One would think that a book that includes a crack fish & wildlife law enforcement team, a rogue Army Ranger hunter/killer team, anti-government militia members, corrupt politicos, a real life panther, possibly Bigfoot, et al would be a crackling good yarn. Alas, such is not the case, as none of this gels into a real page-turner. The characterization lacks depth, the action is lifeless, the plot next to ridiculous. The climax really just peters out, but by that time the build-up is so lacking in zeal that one really doesn't care. There are too many coincidences in this book to be believable. The set-up with the cover story involving illegal snakes and spiders takes a lot of space in the book with very little pay-off or relevance. Ken Goddard's previous novels were all on the money, really holding the reader's attention. I guess all authors are allowed to fall flat once in awhile. I hope Mr. Goddard gets back on track with the next novel.

    1 out of 5 stars A no-thrill thriller written in plodding prose........1998-11-27

Seldom have I resented the money spent on a paperback book. Double Blind is an exception. Mr. Goddard's past efforts were a credit to the genre. This attempt is lifeless!

The writing quality reminds me of a C-paper in Writing Composition 101. The cast of charactures (good guys and bad guys)are cardboard caricatures. To compensate, the muddled plot moves at the pace of a slow loris.

I'm sorry Mr. Goddard, but this is really a badly written novel. I look forward to your next effort.

5 out of 5 stars An extremely fun book........1997-11-30

I had an extremely hard time putting this book down. Excellent!!

3 out of 5 stars Blind Geometer excellent, but..........2000-11-02

I've read Kim Stanley Robinson's THE BLIND GEOMETER once before in a collection of short novellas by the author that I bought once while an exchange student in Germany (I was getting tired of reading Goethe and wanted to read something in my native English again for once). THE BLIND GEOMETER is EXCELLENT. But the rest of Kim Stanley Robinson's stories I found abysmally bad. I'm not sure if this book advertised here is the same one I read, however...I have yet to read any of his MARS books, though. Maybe he's gotten better.
