Book Description

The book that Entertainment Weekly called "hilarious," Publishers Weekly declared "a true pleasure," Booklist called "heartwarming," and the Dallas Morning News praised as "rich and funny" is now available in paperback.

When Bob Tarte bought a house in rural Michigan, he was counting on a tranquil haven. Then Bob married Linda. She wanted a rabbit, which seemed innocuous enough until the bunny chewed through their electrical wiring. And that was just the beginning. Before long, Bob found himself constructing cages, buying feed, clearing duck waste, and spoon-feeding a menagerie of furry and feathery residents. His life of quiet serenity vanished, and he unwittingly became a servant to a relentlessly demanding family. "They dumbfounded him, controlled and teased him, took their share of his flesh, stole his heart" (Kirkus Reviews).

Whether commiserating with Bob over the fate of those who are slaves to their animals or regarding his story as a cautionary tale about the rigors of animal ownership, readers on both sides of the fence have found Tarte's story of his chaotic squawking household irresistible--and irresistibly funny.

5 out of 5 stars If you've ever been a chew toy for a bird...you'll love this book........2007-07-29

Enslaved by Ducks is the story of how the author Bob Tarte (a bonafide city slicker) gave in to his country girl wife, Linda when it came to getting a rabbit named Binky. Binky ends up being a terror on 4 legs for Bob. Bob ends up getting attached to Binky despite his relentless testing of Bob's temper. Bob ends up allowing Linda to expand their "herd". Pretty soon they have ducks, parrots and turkeys. Soon Bob realizes he's at the very bottom of the pecking order in his own home. He ends up sharing his dinner with parrots, nursing ducks back to health in his living room, building perches for turkeys and being used as a chew toy for a parrot.

I really enjoyed this book and I'm now reading the sequel to it called "Fowl Weather" by Bob Tarte.

3 out of 5 stars Delightful reading!.......2007-07-09

Having personally been 'Enslaved by Ducks' the title caught my eye! I very much enjoyed reading this book with a vast array of animal characters and a never-ending list of animal encounters, this book is a FUN read. Initially, it is a little slow getting going. I bought the book based on the title and wanted to read about Ducks; I was somewhat disappointed when the first few chapters dealt mainly with pet rabbits, so it was slow going for me. Once I got past the bunny, etc. stories and into the Ducks and Geese it was a really good time AND I learned LOTS about pet Rabbits, too! A definite Must-Read for any animal lover!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sad, and outrageously funny.......2007-03-29

This is a terribly fun series of fowl events. I was tempted to call it 'light reading' but that wouldnt be accurate. It feels like light reading but every page is chock full with this couples' adventures while they try to save, raise, and adopt a variety of critters. Its a good book to put down and pick up later - if you're like me and an inconsistent reader - and not be lost in the process.

The writing is wonderful. The analogies and descriptions are so clever and witty that i have to shout and laugh out loud. The husband and wife have diferent ways of looking at things (one is generally more pessimistic and the other deliciously optimistic), which makes things even more interesting of course.

This book is a blast. Its a delightful read.

2 out of 5 stars Why Do People Think This is Funny?.......2007-03-23

I keep getting suckered in by these "funny animal stories" with high user feedback. I slogged all the way through Marley and Me and was ready to shoot myself by the end. OK, I laughed 5 times, but I grimaced 25 and the story was just not that interesting.

With Marley under my belt, my tolerance was way down, so I did not finish this book. However, after about 50 pages, I had not laughed once. Again, the story was not that interesting

4 out of 5 stars Enslaved by Ducks review.......2007-02-07

Slow but funny reading. I read it in spurts. It is a book of his columns that were printed in the newspaper.

Wow... I read this in 5th grade and it was worth it! And then I read it again in eigth grade... The reason i love this book so much is that i won the contest for Nintendo with the information in this book. (animal crossing pioneer)

Well, I can't say enough for this book. I own the hardback, and plan to get the updated paperback soon!

5 out of 5 stars An Nsider Delight.......2000-03-31

This is ONE book that I just can't get out of my mind! This book is a must get for gamers & Nsiders (The Official On-line Nintendo Club)!

Game Over gave a near-perfect insite to Nintendo's beginning of a handfuda card company (Japanese cards), develop into a game / toy company, & eventually entering the Video Game company.

David Sheff did an excellent job in writting this book & does go in depth into things as well as actual translation of the name ("Leave Luck to God" is my favorite).

If the Nsiders is a cult/ religion, this would be our bible!

This is a great book to read, even though there are slight minor flaws & this version only goes up to 1993. It's a must read good & would Highly suggest picking up the revised sequal, "Game Over: Press Start to continue"

4 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook on Nintendo's past........1999-12-11

Game Over is a terrific account of Nintendo's past, and is must reading for video game enthusiasts and historians. Mr. Sheff had what seemed to be unparalleled access to Nintendo's inner workings, and brought back a fascinating story on a family business made good in the international community. Unfortunately, the book falls for Nintendo's predictions for the future (many of which were designed by Nintendo solely to draw attention away from its rivals rather than to provide insight into their future business plans.) As long as the last parts of the book that attempt to chart the future course for video games and Nintendo are ignored, the book stands as an important work in video game journalism.

I do have a few complaints with the contents and focus of the book; there are the usual small factual errors which may obscure future historical video game research; there are the regurgitations of various industry spokesmen without proper interpretations; and there is the unwavering focus on Nintendo which tends to downplay the parts played by their competitors/rivals in the industry. I have yet to read the updated version of Game Over (Press Start to Continue), and the new version may rectify some or all of these shortcomings. Regardless, Game Over stands as a slightly flawed, but amazingly useful research tool and entertaining book.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Moving Story.......2007-08-24

I found out about Captain James Riley's story one night when I was watching the history channel. I was so moved by the documentary about Captain Riley's story that I wanted actually read it for myself. I chose this book since it is simply Captain James Riley's words of what happened. He uses extremely descriptive language in laying out the situations he and his crew experienced throughout their ordeal of being stranding and later sold into slavery in West and North Africa. He spares no detail in the account, and it is truly a blessing that he and some of his crew survived. I found myself hoping for his success as I read, even though I knew how the story would end. I found myself wondering if I would have survived such an ordeal. This was possible by simply reading Cpt. Riley's account without additional things thrown in. After reading this I gave it to my mother I was so moved. It would have been nice if there were some maps included to give the reader and idea of where exactly the events took place, but never the less an awe inspiring book.

4 out of 5 stars Desperate Saharan survival despite horribly tortuous treatment.......2007-05-21

The author of the book, Captain James Riley, bravely wrote and acknowledged his role in his ship's disaster of wrecking off the North African coast back in 1815. This is an incredible tale of survival under the most brutal and pain-racking conditions one can imagine. The American brig, Commerce, hit a storm off the North African coast and was wrecked. The crew manages to reach the beach in their boats and collapse with exhaustion. However, the wreck and chance of plunder attracts an Arab nomad band to the scene. It is at this point that the captain and crew get a taste of the welcome they that will be met with from natives who are as merciless and unforgiving as the Sahara desert they live in.

Although they manage to avoid capture and probable execution on their first encounter with the Arab nomads, the second encounter finds them starved, hopeless, and without water for several days running. So, they are enslaved and stripped naked by their captors. Their skin sizzles and blisters horribly under the ferocious Saharan sun while they walk barefooted and bloody over the sharp, rocky desert floor for many days - each day weaker with the spark of life slowly ebbing from their eyes. Then their band encounters their personal savior, Abdallah, who is an Arab merchant crossing the Sahara along with his brother. He buys the captain and most of the crew at Riley's repeated emotional entreaties, planning to sell them back to the English consul, Mr. Willshire, in far away Mogadore (for a profit, of course).

Yet despite their new master and his profit motive, their continued survival is highly tentative as starvation, thirst, fatigue, continual danger of brigands, and even Abdallah's own brother conspire to steal these forsaken, hapless captives. And even though Riley must have suffered immeasurably he still managed to sear his inconceivable experiences into his memory and learned to speak some Arabic as well. Their thirst was often so remorseless that they routinely drank camel urine and subsisted on the most meager food imaginable.

This is a remarkable true story and one which vividly portrays the unspeakable sufferings by the unprepared and unwary stranded in the deserts of North Africa. Read the book, skip the visit!

4 out of 5 stars Sufferings in Africa...........2007-05-07

Being an ardent reader of autobiographical accounts of travel and the tribulations encountered, I found this to be a fascinating and horrifying memoir about an infrequently described area of Africa some two centuries ago. However, at the outset, mention is made of drawings and maps - none of which are included. A shame !

4 out of 5 stars Take Another Look at Slavery.......2007-04-03

I read this book with great interest and pleasure as James Riley is an ancestor of mine. Makes a great family gift. Those who enjoy historical reading will certainly enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Sufferings in Africa.......2007-01-29

It was amazing how the author could retain the readers interest in such a monotonous environment. Captain Riley never lost his faith in God and in the end it shows how God works in mysterious ways and never abandons those who trust in Him. An incredible story.!!!

4 out of 5 stars This is a good book........2007-04-11

I like that there is a series around this book that keeps you coming back to a story line that you do not want to put down!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and Funny.......2007-04-05

Firts off I love this series and KIL was and is my favorite of the brothers. However I expected more from his story. That being said it was still typical J.B which means HOTT AND FUNNY. Very groovy combination. There were some disturbing parts in relation to the younger girls of the family but still all in all a great book and worth youre time particularly if you like this series.

2 out of 5 stars Good Erotica, Really Bad Science Fiction.......2007-04-02

This is my first Jaid Black, and after the great reviews, I'm very disappointed. I cannot recommend this one. Don't buy from the store, as it is expensive. (I paid $12.99). Get it from the library.

My complaint is that, though the sex is hot, the story is VERY THIN, the characterization almost non-existent. I like a little story with my erotica.

We are whipped almost instanteously from the 1960's into some time travel, which is not explained very well, then whipped again into a female warrior commune situation, which isn't explained very well, and Marty hardly requires an adjustment interval. We are 'told' that Marty is a feminist, but when she meets Kil, she capitulates almost instantly, for her 'master'. I had a hard time buying it. As an example of the mis-placed characerization, the 1960's protestors are chanting 'No Justice, No Peace!' which, in fact, was the chant for the Rodney King beating and riots, and had almost nothing to do with the Vietnam War, or the Woman's Movement, as depicted in the story.

I didn't get a good sense of place in any of the environments depicted in the story. The whole story unfolded too fast, the relationships, superficial. I am left believing that there are much better writers out there, who can combine science fiction and erotica in a statisfying manner. Examples include: Kresley Cole with the Immortals After Dark Series; Johanna Lindsey's Warrior's Woman is very erotic; Sherrilyn Kenyon, Justine Davis, and Dara joy, among a few.

2 out of 5 stars Please enough with the Groovy..........2005-09-24

The strong female protaganist is actually a displaced hippy fresh from a 1960's bra burning rally. Unfortunatly, a metiorite catapults her into another dimension with huge men set on public sex.

The book warns it should be read with Book 2...maybe Black should admit none of her books can stand alone. Details and reasons are lacking about what draws the two protaganists together or even what a soul mate is to this overgrown species of males.

Secondary characters pop in and out of the book, no doubt awaiting their own novels with little or no explaination.

The main character has one line she uses in every situation...Groovy.

This book isn't groovy enough to own.

3 out of 5 stars I do enjoy these books but..........2004-11-08

I have grown very fond of this series of books & have been waiting to read Kill's story with anticipation. On Kill & Marty's story alone I would have given it 5 stars. It is very funny in parts, which had me in stitches. I'm glad to see Marty standing up to Kil. Telling him no in her own way.

The down part for me has nothing to do with Kill & Marty, but his nieces predicament. At the end of this book we have Dari who is 14 years old being sent away to live with her future sacred mate & his parents because she has caused him embarrasement. She cannot see her family only if her future sacred mate allows it. She has to live with him for 11 years before he can claim her. The scene with her parents after being told of her punishment was heart-breaking. I cannot believe Zor agreed to Gio's petition to have Dari removed from her parents home & into his custody. What kind of man does that to his own brother? With brothers like that who needs enemies.

Book Description

Where are all the real men? she wondered...

For Lady Diana Davenport, they existed only in her books and dreams. There she could lose herself, becoming the licentious Diana, goddess of the hunt--far from the rigid restraints of eighteenth-century London, where she was courted by fops and fools. That is, until she tried on an authentic Roman helmet in an antiques store and was catapulted back in time, landing in Marcus Magnus's arms. This was no dream! She was lost in Aquae Sulis, the city she knew as Bath, prisoner of a Roman general who accused the violet-eyed beauty of being a Druid spy--and then made her his slave!

"COME TO ME."

His words were soft, imperious, charged with danger and desire. Marcus Magnus was powerful, arrogant, and infuriating. A real man. And now Lady Diana was his slave, hostage to his will, vowing to fight him to the end--with every seductive weapon she possessed....

Virginia Henley is the author of eight romances published by Dell, including the New York Times bestsellers Seduced and Desired.

She divides her time between Ontario, Canada, and St. Petersburg, Florida.

5 out of 5 stars Glamourous, sensuous historical erotica.......2006-09-27

I adore this book. It is my favourite historical romance novel. I totally fell in love with the heroine and the hero. Diana is the epitome of femininity and sensuality and Mark/Marcus is the virile Roman conquerer. If I were a story book character I would want to be Diana who is portrayed as a perfect goddess. Mark/Marcus is a dream lover come to life when you turn the pages of this treasure. I was deeply touched by the way the love unfolded between the two characters, how their mutual contempt turned to passion and lust then into love.

You know i sometimes wonder if people are reading the same book i must admit that some of virginia henley books are a little out there but anyway...

LOVED IT i detest time travel romance and this was a kind of getting my feet wet to it..the concept was good it was almost like a kismet thing.I think the heroine held her own and not too many heroines can say they lost their virginity twice and loved both Marcus/Mark...good story you know historical romance novels it goes with the time and period of how they would act.

its like i always say a bad reivew can really downplay a good book and a good review can really up play a bad book, because of some of the bad reviews for this book I almost didn't read it but i'm glad i change my mind

I enjoyed this book because it immediately "enslaved" my imagination. If you are looking for a book to read just for pure enjoyment then I suggest this book. I also implore you to read it with the intention and realization that this is fiction, meant to be nothing more...nor nothing less.

I hope she writes other genres or tone her books down so that i could appreciate her rich writting style that so intrieged me at first.

    Book Description

Colonial America presented a new world of natural curiosities for settlers as well as the London-based scientific community. In American Curiosity, Susan Scott Parrish examines how various peoples in the British colonies understood and represented the natural world around them from the late sixteenth century through the eighteenth. Rather than flowing strictly from metropole to colony, scientific knowledge about America emerged from a horizontal exchange of information across the Atlantic.

Delving into an understudied archive of letters, Parrish uncovers early descriptions of American natural phenomena as well as clues to how people in the colonies construed their own identities through the natural world. Although hierarchies of gender, class, institutional learning, place of birth or residence, and race persisted within the natural history community, the contributions of any participant were considered valuable as long as they supplied novel data or specimens from the American side of the Atlantic. Thus Anglo-American nonelites, women, Indians, and enslaved Africans all played crucial roles in gathering and relaying new information to Europe.

Recognizing a significant tradition of nature writing and representation in North America well before the Transcendentalists, American Curiosity also enlarges our notions of the scientific Enlightenment by looking beyond European centers to find a socially inclusive American base to a true transatlantic expansion of knowledge.

      Book Description

The common thread that unites the three books is mapping the issue of equality before law and various issues relating to women's rights, social justice, and empowerment. The new Introduction by Flavia Agnes discusses the process of legal change. The omnibus forms a comprehensive and significant study for understanding why progressive laws, once passed, continue to be implemented in such limited manner. It highlights that legistlation even in the past fifty years have not brought equality even though lip service is paid to it by policy-makers. Sudhir Chandra studies the case of Rukhmabai wherein he reveals the inner working of the legal system during the colonial period and studies the conflicting and overlapping ideologies which underpinned it. This proves an essential reading in legal social and women's history of the period. Monmayee Basu takes the subject further. Her book is an in-depth study of the development and changes in the Hindu marriage laws are analysed to explain women's position in society. Flavia Agnes takes up the newer/contemporary struggles for reforms related to women. Her work interweaves numerous perspectives into a meaningful whole. The analysis is backed by facts and cases. She takes up the important issue of Uniform Civil Code and has exposed the communal undertones of some of the recent judicial pronouncements.

      Book Description

Two of the most vocal activists on racial issues in the church seek nothing less than a conversion of American Christianity. They directly challenge the churches to resume leadership in overcoming and redressing America's legacy of racial segregation.

Campolo and Battle expose the realities of racial division in the churches and then lift up a vision of a church without racism. To achieve reconciliation within and among the denominations, they argue, both the black and the white church need to acknowledge and overcome substantial problems in their traditions.

The authors provide a blueprint for how racially reconciled churches can encourage activism in the cities, church involvement in politics, and responsible use of the Bible, ultimately helping to transform American society itself.

Well written. Thought-provoking. But, for a historical and honest look a this topic try "Winning the Race to Unity - Is racial reconciliation really working" by Clarence Shuler. Shuler deals with the falacy appearing in the Campolo subtitle "Racial Reconciliation" arguing that you can only be reconciled to someone with whom you have had a relationship. The real problem in the Church is that we have not gone out of our way to develop relationships cross-culturally, we are trying to rebuild a bridge that never existed.

      Book Description

Despite the explosion of works on African Americans and religious history, little is known about the Muslims who came to America as slaves. Most assume that what Muslim faith any Africans did bring with them was quickly absorbed into the new Christian milieu. But, surprisingly, as Sylviane A. Diouf shows in this new, meticulously researched volume, Islam flourished during slavery.

This book presents a history of African Muslims following them from West Africa to the Americas. It details how, even while enslaved, many Muslims managed to follow most of the precepts of Islam. Literate in Arabic, urbane and well-traveled, they drew on their organization and the strength of their faith to maintain successful, cohesive communities and to play a major role in the most well-known slave uprisings.

Servants of Allah is the first book to examine the role of Islam in the lives of both individual practitioners and in the American slave community as a whole, while also shedding light on the legacy of Islam in today's American and Caribbean cultures.

      5 out of 5 stars A must Historical Book.......2007-08-06

Very well and detailed written ,this book gives you an insight on the enslaved Muslims in America then no other Book that I have read so far.
It gives you an insight on the situation in Africa (Political and economical )at the time when slavery started and contiued.Reasons why their own country man where selling each other tribal conflicts and religious differences.
It is not a book that is written like a tale it will most likely take you some time to finish reading it.

5 out of 5 stars African Muslims and the Struggle for Freedom.......2007-06-09

This book has brought tears to my eyes as well as joy. This book should be read by all people especially the African American and Caribbean people who have African descent. We must honor our ancestors struggle for freedom. When we honor them we bring honor to ourselves. As African people we will never be free until we free our minds. No one will be free until he knows himself and the history of his ancestors and all those who came before them. Knowledge of self is the key to true freedom. This book is a very courageous book that is full of lost but not forgotten history of the Enslaved Africans in the Americas. May God bless the author, Sylviane A. Diouf and all those who seek wisdom and knowledge for the sake of freedom, Justice and world peace.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a sincere, well-researched text on a group who has been kept silent far too long........2007-02-08

Diouf's "Servants of Allah" is one of the few highly researched and well written accounts of the West African Muslims history in the context of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

This book, in my opinion is an undeniable truth in the face of the few so called "afrikan-centered scholars" (very well known, btw) who blindly and blatantly bash and reject the religion of Islam and its African adherents, not realizing, or wanting to fully realize the pivotal impact of the Black African Muslims during the enslavement period.

In fact the Muslims of Songhay, Mali, Hausaland, Senegambia, Guinea Coast, etc... who were ripped away from their thriving African homelands and brought to the Americas under the cloak of European Christianity were the valiant masterminds of the major slave revolts including the jihads ("holy wars")waged in Brazil (Bahia), Louisiana, Haiti (yes the infamous Haitian Revolution was lead by Macandal, who was a sufi muslim leader).

However what is most striking are the Diouf's researched writings into some of the Muslims themselves, true Afrikan warriors like Job ben Solomon (A Wolof prince who was proficient in 5 languages including Arabic, and returned to Africa after only 3 years of enslavement in the New World), Ibrihim Abd ar-Rahman, who was able to write an entire autobiography in Arabic of his experience in chattel slavery.

For the sake of brevity, I must conclude by giving a tremendous BRAVO! for sister Diouf's powerhouse book, and I could not recommend this book enough!

      Peace brothers and sisters!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PIECE OF WRITING!.......2006-12-23

This is an excellent piece of writing and deserves to be read by anyone interested in the history of the Transantlatic Slavery and the implantation of Islam in the Americas.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed.......2005-02-05

This is a significant study that suffers, however, from insufficient knowledge of Islam.

      Book Description

Twenty-seven million people are estimated to be held in slavery around the world today. This collection of first-hand accounts will raise awareness and show how slavery is thriving in the twenty first century. From poverty-stricken countries to affluent American suburbs, slaves toil as sweatshop workers, sex slaves, migrant workers, domestic servants, and chattel slaves. This groundbreaking collection includes accounts written by ten former slaves and slaveholders in Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the United States. From Micheline, a Haitian girl who wound up as a domestic worker in Connecticut, to Abdel, a Sudanese slave owner turned abolitionist, these are stories that will heighten awareness of a global human rights crisis that can no longer be ignored.

Slavery is often seen as a historical issue - but in fact human bondage is very prevalent today, as ENSLAVED shows with its collection of slave narratives written by both past and current slaves and slaveholders from Asia, Africa, the Mid-East and the U.S. 21st century human bondage isn't a common topic but it will prove a unique and involving one for any high school to college-level course in social issues.
