2 out of 5 stars 4 super short stories.......2006-08-21

this book contains four mediocre short stories. i didn't find them anything special and though i gravitated to the book because i have gotten to like lori foster's work, i found her story to be especially disappointing. i suppose if you are looking for a quick summer read, this will do, but beware for you may be a bit bothered when you finish.

4 out of 5 stars Hot, hot, hot... and sweet........2003-12-30

- "Luring Lucy" by Lori Foster
(My favourite!) Lucy was the woman who had driven Bram crazy for more years than any man should suffer. According to Bram, at 39, Lucy was one sexy-as-sin woman, all lush curves and mature angles, but Lucy thought she was lumpy and fat, average at best. She couldn't believe that Bram, who had a wide, hard chest with clearly defined muscles that could make a female of any age hungry, could be interested in her. Not when her own husband had preferred a younger woman, and had cheated on her.

It's a pity it's just a short story, the characters deserved a whole book.

- "Truth or Dare" by Laura Bradley
P.I. Shay McIntyre goes undercover as a reporter to find out who is behind the suspicious deaths of two bullriders, and finds herself playing a wicked game of truth or dare with Luke Wilder.

- "Compromised" by Gayle Callen
Lady Elizabeth Stanwood only wanted to make Lord Wyndham jealous. She never expected to be compromised or marry a man whose affections she does not seem to welcome.

- "Treading Dangerous Waters" by Victoria Marquez
Sofia's plans to relax on a cruise are ruined when she meets James, her aunt's future son-in-law, who will try to stop his father's wedding one way or another.

4 out of 5 stars Begins and ends with a bang..........2003-04-02

Luring Lucy by Lori Foster*****
Bram is Lucy's deceased husband best friend and once he figures out Lucy wants to have a fling before her 40th birthday, he decides it's finally time to let her know how he really feels. Hot and steamy contemporary romance, the anticipation will keep you turning the pages until you finish this one.

Truth or Dare by Laura Bradley****
Shay McIntyre is pretending to be a reporter so she can snuff out a killer. Bull rider Luke Wilder is as stubborn as they come and determined to prove to his family that he is not worthless. These two challenge each other constantly to win by betting and playing truth or dare. This is a good contemporary romance story however it shouldn't follow Lori Foster's story.

Compromised by Gayle Callen***
John Mallory is 5 days away from his Yorkshire home looking for a bride. Lady Elizabeth Stanwood wants to marry Lord Wyndham and decides to use this strange newcomer in order to make Lord Wyndham jealous. After boldly approaching John she allows him to escort her outside into the garden where things get a little heated. Well, little did she know, someone saw her leave and her disheveled appearance when she returned. John is summoned by her father early the next morning and agrees to marry her in order to save her reputation. Elizabeth is not happy about being forced to marry a stranger with no money or title. This story is funny at times but it was unrealistic for this couple to fall in love. John wanted a wife to work by his side and Elizabeth wanted a farthingale with servants. Typical historical romance however couple never seemed to really bond-this anthology seems to be going downhill.

Treading Dangerous Waters by Victoria Marquez*****
Whoa, wait a minute; this one is definitely worth hanging in there for.
Daniel Connor is in love and getting ready to get married, again. James, his son knows his Dad is up to something because he's avoiding him and doesn't return his calls. He decides to confront his dad at his favorite Saturday night hangout and watches "the brazen little fortune hunter" with the "tantalizing derriere" affectionately squeeze his Dad's arm and sidle up to him. After being informed of his dads' plan for a two-week cruise complete with his lady friend, a family member and possibly a marriage ceremony, he puts his skills as a divorce attorney to work to immediately breakup this engagement. But, what is the world is he going to do about his instant attraction to his alleged future stepmother, Sofia. This is an excellent contemporary romance. Sofia is no pushover, she's been bossed around too long and refuses to let the "too brutally handsome barracuda lawyer" ruin this wedding.

5 out of 5 stars A sensual delight!.......2002-02-25

All four stories are fast-paced, fun, and very different. My two favorites were "Luring Lucy" by Lori Foster and "Treading Dangerous Waters" by Victoria Marquez. In "Luring Lucy", the characters are a little older than usual, but very appealing nevertheless. This is a hot read with an engaging plot. I also loved Victoria Marquez' story aboard a cruise ship. Her writing is sexy and humorous. The sexual tension between Sofia and James positively sizzled! The other two stories by Laura Bradley and Gayle Callen rounded out a great anthology. For enjoyable reading, I highly recommend "Hot and Bothered".

2 out of 5 stars Mixed bag.......2002-02-09

The first two stories in this anthology -- by Lori Foster and Laura Bradley -- were definitely "hot," but the second two stories just, well, bothered me. The historical story set in the sixteenth century was both dull and out of place among the other contemporary love stories. I wanted to like Victoria Marquez' contribution because of its latina heroine, but frankly the ending was just too unbelievable. Still, Lori Foster's story was *almost* worth the book. Almost.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent read!.......2007-08-22

I have to admit, from the cover, I thought this was going to be pretty basic chicklit, but I was pleasantly surprised! I'd never read any Susan Andersen before, and I'm amazed by the depth and style of her writing.

This is a romantic suspense in the best traditions of Nora Roberts and Catherine Coulter. While not police-based, it's a gripping story that combines murder, money and love. Victoria Hamilton, a rich young socialite, once had a "no names, no questions" vacation fling that resulted in a baby. She raised the baby herself and got on with her life.

Now her father's been murdered and her brother has been accused of it and run away. Tori must step in to fix things, but nearly as soon as she arrives home, she's faced with John "Rocket" Miglionni - her secret fling, who also happens to be the P.I. she's hired to find her brother.

Andersen's characters are believable, real, and very easy to become attached to. Strong, independent, responsible female characters often fall to pieces as soon as the male protagonist appears in romance novels - not so with Tori Hamilton. Andersen's style is very smooth and efficient, very unlike the overly-descriptive poetic style often adopted by romance authors. If you're a fan of Nora Roberts, I'd strongly recommend trying Susan Andersen. This book was a great surprise, and I'll be seeking out more from this author.

3 out of 5 stars Sexy conclusion to the "Marine" series.......2007-01-18

Wealthy architect Tori Hamilton hires a PI from Semper Fi Investigations to locate and exonerate her brother Jared who disappeared after their father was fatally stabbed. When she meets John the PI, it turns out he's the man she had a sex-filled weekend with in Florida six years earlier, resulting in the birth of her precocious daughter Esme. Estranged from her controlling and abusive wealthy father, she chose to raise her daughter in England, and is only returning to the US because of Jared.

Once the cat is out of the bag, John must come to terms with fatherhood, the reemergence of his feelings for Tori (as well as their differing yet similar backgrounds when it comes to fathers), and his commitment to finding her brother. Once the two decide to rekindle the romance, they literally burn up the pages (and the readers finally find out how John got the nickname "rocket").

Andersen can always be counted on to tell a sensual and engaging story, with great secondary storylines, in this case, pampered Jared's experience of living on the streets. It's a good conclusion to the "marine" series (and provides redemption for the dismal "Getting Lucky").

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not One Of Her Bests.......2006-11-27

I like Anderson's books but this one is not one of my favorites. But still a fairly decent book altogether. John and Victoria met 6 years earlier. They had a no names "fling" that resulted in a child that John knows nothing about until he sets foot on Tori's doorstep 6 years later. He is being hired by Victoria to help search for her brother. She only knew him as Rocket so she is shocked to see him. Once he relizes he's a father it takes him so time to adjust and at times in the book is not really sure if he wants to be a father. Tori and John do alot of pushing and pulling at each other throughout this book.During this "search" for the brother, Victoria & John rekindle their relationship. I thought their chemistry good, but the book did not seem to grab me.

And the constant refrence to John's "package" just dumb and out of place in the book. And the daughter Esme way to grown up, no 5 year old would talk or act like her. I don't understand why authors feel the need to make child characters in there book unbelivable. I seemed to be more interested in the relationship that the brother made while living on the streets. But overall this was a ok read. Just not one of her bests.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy Mystery.......2006-06-12

A better than average romance that uses the time-worn plot of rekindling a long ago romance that had resulted in a child. John, known as Rocket, investigates the murder of Tori's crochety father and tries to find her runaway brother. Proximity forces them to reassess their attraction to each other, but is complicated when Rocket realizes Tori's daughter is also his daughter.
The characters have depth and even the side plots are well developed (the young brother's experience on the streets and the friendship that saves him there). The mystery blends well with the romance for a satisfying read. My favorite, so far, of Andersen's books is Skintight, but this one was sexy and reasonably real though I got a little tired of the rapsodizing over Rocket's "rocket" and appearance and abilities.

5 out of 5 stars It will put a smile on your face - - ENJOY !.......2005-09-12

`Hot and Bothered' is a very enjoyable romance/murder mystery. This is the story of Tori and John/Rocket who had hot week five year ago and created a child. Tori hires John ex-marine now PI to find her brother and solve her father's murder. The sparks fly and more than a murder is solved. I enjoyed Susan Andersen's `Getting Lucky' novel as well and plan to buy `Skintight' her latest novel.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Steamy Guilty Pleasure.......2006-07-25

If you've ever read any of the other 'Bad Boy' anthologies out there and liked them, you won't be disappointed with this one. This book contains six super short (50 pages each) and steamy contemporary romances. All are written well and a breeze to read. They're sort of like a snickers bar for your libido -a little guilty pleasure. Some are laugh out loud funny and some will make wish the book was water-proof for a cold shower. Nice beach read -on second thought you may not want to read these stories in public if your prone to blushing.:)

4 out of 5 stars Momentary Relief from Real Life.......2006-07-24

Romance writers know how to fantasize and then put their imaginations on paper with extraordinary flair. Six of them make this compilation of skin tingling stories possible to be consumed by particular group of readers. The title of the collection is appropriate although the short narrations of attractions and entanglements could be savored more before turning in at night. Leave it to one's mind to be tickled by the fantasies where sweet dreams take over as the eyes closed shut after a long grueling day. Each story is a dilly.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the sand and enjoy the read!.......2006-07-16

A really great collection for summer reading. Each story stands alone, though one or two are connected to other stories by the same author. Each story is just long enough to deal with attention span problems brought on by the heat! enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars quick and fun!.......2005-07-14

This anthology was unlike any I'd read before. There are 6 authors, and at first I wasn't certain I'd feel fulfilled. However, it turned out to be a fun book. The stories are quick and if you are like me, sometimes it's nice to take a break from the long, intense romance stories and read something you can finish in one sitting. As a mom, I don't have loads of time to read, so this was a nice change of pace for me.

The most exciting stories were Foster's, McCarthy's, and Denison's. Those women know how to write a quick romance and leave you with a feeling of contentment.

Fast Fun Stories For The Road!!

PERFECT FOR THE BEACH is truly the book to take to the beach with you. The story is very entertaining !!

    Book Description

How did menopause change from being a natural (and often welcome) end to a woman's childbearing years to a deficiency disease in need of medical and pharmacological intervention? As she traces the medicalization of menopause over the last 100 years, historian Judith Houck challenges some widely held assumptions. Physicians hardly foisted hormones on reluctant female patients; rather, physicians themselves were often reluctant to claim menopause as a medical problem and resisted the widespread use of hormone therapy for what was, after all, a normal transition in a woman's lifespan. Houck argues that the medical and popular understandings of menopause at any given time depended on both pharmacological options and cultural ideas and anxieties of the moment. As women delayed marriage and motherhood and entered the workforce in greater numbers, the medical understanding, cultural meaning, and experience of menopause changed. By examining the history of menopause over the course of the twentieth century, Houck shows how the experience and representation of menopause has been profoundly influenced by biomedical developments and by changing roles for women and the changing definition of womanhood.

    Book Description

She’s offbeat, off balance, and at times off-the-wall, a late-thirties mother of two living in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and trying to figure out who she is now that her husband has left her. He’s a rat, anyway, and currently attends Sex Addicts Anonymous. He still comes by the house, though, as do her hippie, macrobiotic mother; her feisty, alcoholic best friend; her God-fearing grandmother; and that Perfect Guy, the one with the beatific son who plays with her daughter, the one who happens to have a winning smile, wild black hair, a professorship at Harvard—and (drats!) a gorgeous doctor girlfriend.

Told in short takes that perfectly mimic the frantic nature of our busy lives, Hot and Bothered follows its heroine through the streets of Cambridge, where she spends far too much time staring into space and sipping mocha lattes with extra whipped cream; to church, where she prays for a little salvation; to Alaska, where she believes a rugged outdoorsman might just be that salvation; and to Cape Cod, where, in a little house by the sea, she might finally see the light. Annie Downey has written an updated Cinderella story for all single moms.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars a pure delight.......2007-07-03

I have to say, I couldn't put this book down. Downey is masterful at creating a flawed and lovable heroine who any mother will completely relate to. The pervading sense of chaos is almost too realistic, but you will envy her boyfriend choices, cringe at her romantic misteps, and applaud her final solution.

But calling this a romance or chick lit wouldn't be doing it justice: it is not just about romantic love. Downey's character grows as the book progresses and her relationships with her children are central to her life. The writing is crisp, fast-paced (echoing the live of her character) and literary. I was particularly taken with how she portrayed the older women in the work such as her mother, grandmother and funky aunts. They are sexy, smart and there isn't a apron-clad blue hair among them!

    Brava, Annie Downey, brava.

5 out of 5 stars great beach read.......2007-05-12

I simply loved this book, it was funny, touching and unique. I would recommend it especially for all mothers and daughters.

    5 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2006-11-28

I bought this to relax and enjoy while I am on the bike at the gym. I had barely started it when I took it to the gym. I did extra on the bike because I didn't want to put it down. I ended up reading the whole thing over the weekend. I guess I need another book for the gym!

The story is full of quirky characters and the main character has a pretty funny outlook on life. The Volvo driving suburban mom who is deeply unhappy must find out what the heck to do with her life when it turns out in ways she had not planned. It is relatively predicable and yet still a delightful girly read without being too graphic.

I just wish I had gotten this from the library because I will definately never read it again. (Not that it was was bad, but I know how it ends).

    Hope you like it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Much to It.......2007-09-29

HOT and Bothered By It does have its moments. But the poems don't have much substance. While I understand this book is meant solely for humor, the writing is paper-thin and the few smiles it provides are not worth paying for. Often, the humor just falls flat.

The writing is amateurish and just high school literary magazine worthy. Being a rhyme Nazi, when I read rhyme, I must see it done well or not at all; in "Senior Discount", the rhyme falters and is very noticeable. The author can't decide whether she wants to rhyme or not in "Hopscotch and Double Dutch". "Like the Essence of a Fine Wine" is out of place in collection of humor poems, and the author goes out of her way to walk the reader through the metaphor of flowers and women. "Pucker Up" is difficult to read; any established meter is trampled on by the end of the poem. A few of the poems end awkwardly.

If you want a quick diversion, there are better poetry books, but Ms. Johnson does give a few good dashes of humor. If you are considering buying, HOT and Bothered By It is good for a long Sunday morning. Please, just buy it at bargain bin discount.

        1 out of 5 stars Bothered.......2005-09-10

At least half the title is perfect. I'm most certainly bothered. Bothered that I spent 15 of my hard earned dollars on something that was nowhere near erotic, more neurotic. Still trying to figure out when and how a paraplegic became the center of a love triangle and how and when I was supposed to be turned on.

Looking at the subtitle or description "short short fiction on lesbian desire" should have warned me but alas I focused on lesbian desire. Suicide is not desirable...holding a dead woman's hand is not desirable. In short this book is not about lesbian desire and more in line with lesbian heartache and disgust.

In the end that's what I felt when I placed it in on my shelf never to be seen or read again.

5 out of 5 stars Something here to whet a range of lesbian appetites.......2002-03-30

From the skillful editing of Karen X. Tulschisky comes Hot and Bothered 3: short short fiction of lesbian desire. Think of this collection of over 69 stories as a table spread with delicious finger foods. The limitation of length (1000 words or less) requires the writers to select their words carefully and results in an almost poetic quality to many stories. Although some of these stories are definitely arousing, please note this is not a volume of erotica, but of desire in its many flavors. Tulschisky has assembled a buffet of writers. Some writers are well known and others are new "chefs," offering their first sales.

Savor the imagery of that perfect autumn afternoon in Leslea Newman's "One Fine Day" which brought a smile to this reader and had her humming a tune for hours. Or nibble at the poignant stories like "Sunsets." Written by Denise Seibert, from the view point of a paraplegic, it is a very touching example of a couple connecting despite barriers to communication. While "Holding Hands" from Jean Taylor expands the definitions of making love. Or Michelle Rait's "Dinner with Jane," which evokes tempting a dieter with a decadent dessert as Regina considers the consequences of time spent with Jane.

There are a number of bittersweet tastes to sample such as "The Phase" where Susan Lee reflects on returning to the city of her youth and first lesbian love; or K. Lee's "Don't Tell" which is a letter written by a teen to her "best friend;" or the passing-for-straight coworker in Stephanie Schroeder's "Goodbye Joanna."

A porta-potty setting does nothing for this reader's palate, yet "Porta-Potty Passion" by Sarah Wiseman does have the quirky, amusing quality of forbidden, preservative and sugar laden junk food. While Cara Bruce's adult encounter with Barbie puts a whole new spin on the idea of playing with your . . . uh, food. These are just a few of the tasty treats for readers to enjoy.

Sometimes one is tempted to read short stories in quick secession, like popcorn. This reader found greater pleasure in reading only one or two of these stories at a time and suggests you do the same. Let them melt on the tongue of your mind a bit. Savor the images these writers create before you wander back to the table. There's something here to whet a range of lesbian appetites.
