Wow! The Vivid Girls Are Hotter Than The Bronte Sisters!!!.......2005-11-16
I couldn't BELIEVE how much I learned from this book-- the Vivid Girls are amazingly HOT! Jenna, Tawny, Kira, Briana, Dasha, Mercedez, Sunrise (especilly SUNRISE!!), and Savanna can out-write and out-**** Emily, Anne, and Charlotte Bronte any day of the week! And Jane Austen-- forget it! (If she'd had this book before she met Harris Bigg-Wither, the marriage never would have been called off!!) Throw away that copy of Northanger Abbey and get down to the nitty-gritty with Briana: she'll tell you how to make love in your refrigerator! I'll never look at the vegetable-crisping drawer the same way again! And Dasha's relaxation techniques will allow even the most inhibited of partners to receive BEYOND-THE-ELBOW satisfaction-- wow!! Just WOW!!!
this is just a very average how-to sex manual.......2005-07-17
you see one and you see them all. i am sure that there are some that are better than others, but this is not one of the better ones. your significant other won't miss out on any sexual pleasure, if you don't read this book.
Vividly the star is Porn!.......2004-12-14
So maybe you're a fan of Vivid Entertainment and especially the Vivid Girls (Jenna, Tawny, Kira, Briana, Dasha, Mercedez, Sunrise, and Savanna)! If so this book is for you.
Truly, I knew very little about Vivid Entertainment when I bought this book. I suppose I was intrigued as to what a "Porn Star" can really tell me about improving my sex life. Sure they have sex everyday on film but really what kind of information can they offer that will help me or others have a truly fulfilled sex life? Actually, they do manage to communicate the concept of fantasy via porn as a sexual aid and enhancement to any individuals or couples sex life.
Although, there are gems of first hand experience and information I felt as if this book is mostly a vehicle to market and publicized Vivids' number one product, "Porn". Oh, and the Vivid Girls of course.
First and foremost the book is hansom and has a center section of glossy pics of the Vivid Girls. Also, let me just mention that the book is well written with the help of Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman. Each section does give you some interesting information along with a section of script/intro of a currently available Porn Film. Then lots of personal experiences and preferences from the Vivid Girls concerning sex.
Oh, yes, let me also mention the book is littered or adorned with small sections called, 'Vivid Girl Favorits' and 'Vivid Girl Tips' that were quite interesting and worth reading.
All in all, I gave the book four stars for its forward approach of sex and film, its organization, and overall presentation. You might not learn a great deal on how to improve your own sex life but then you might. Anyway, you'll certainly get a lot of forthright personal experiences that can be considered crude erotica or you can consider the delivery of personal information as your own personal one on one interview with the Vivid Girls of Entertainment.
I thought the book intimate and well done but I won't be running to the adult video store anytime soon.

Excellent book.......2007-06-09
This book is one of the best i have read on the subject, i have even shared it with friends. It is very helpful and knowledgable. It is in easy to understand terms and suggestions.
Have to Agree--Unfortunate.......2007-05-17
For those of us just diagnosed and searching for detailed information about "softer" forms of bipolar, this book is discouraging. If you can get past the typographical errors (I couldn't--geez, mister, at least get a proofreader if not an editor!), there's still not much "hard" information. There are some "case histories," but there are no studies to back up this guy's conclusions (he refers to "my experience" a lot). It's just not good enough.
There are a lot of references to "helpful" web sites, but did we really need to spend extra money to figure out we can use the web?
I found the information that IS there disorganized and unenlightening. I should have known that an author who begins, "I love working with bipolars..." might be a bit of a goof.
Save your money and buy "Why Am I Still Depressed?" It's much better.
helpful in understanding bipolar II.......2007-01-09
This book made it easy to understand the so called soft, or lesser forms of bipolar, and how important it is to get treatment. I found it informative.
Don't bother-there are better books available.......2006-09-06
I find this book very hard to read due to all of the typos, left out words, misspellings, and poor grammar. Additionally, much of the book is a series of lists of symptoms or signs without much explanation. The author does provide many web site listings where you can get more (and much better) information though. I would not recommend this book at all as it would be a waste of money.
A really good book on the same topic is "Why am I Still Depressed?" by Jim Phelps, M.D. Dr. Phelps provides much more explanation when he discusses topics. There are no "laundry lists" of symptoms. Additionally, Dr. Phelps provides a very good set of additional references at the end of his book.
So, if you like checklists of symptoms, this book is for you.
If you prefer real information, clear explanations, and good writing, "Why am I still Depressed?" by Jim Phelps is your better choice.
e-book still has typos and grammatical errors.......2006-07-21
Dr. Bunch defended the hard copy of his book by saying that his e-book does not have typos and grammatical errors. WRONG! You'd think he would get it right at some point. I didn't think the errors would be a big deal, but it makes the reader think that perhaps the doctor doesn't really know what he's talking about.
I'm not sure what to make of Dr. Bunch. I'm certain he has helped many people as a therapist, and I think he genuinely cares about the topic of cyclothymia. But, I'm skeptical because as far as I can tell from his credentials, he did not attend medical school. There's nothing wrong with receiving a Ph.D. online, but a physician should be clear about his ability or potential inability to give medical advice, expecially when dealing with mental health. The field of psychiatry and psychology has many professionals who have the experience and the medical education to correctly identify and treat mood disorders.
I'm going to continue muddling my way through the book with some skepticism.

Another big mouth idiot............2007-08-30
All the man does is make fun of and limits his brain to what he thinks is normal. The only thing is he is not normal at all.
Packed With Interesting Facts.......2003-03-23
As someone who came of age politically listening to and watching Mike Thompson on Southeast Florida television and radio, I was pleasantly surprised to see he had written a book. Mr. Thompson's talk shows and commentaries were definitely instrumental in helping me explore my own political values and form my own political beliefs as a college student and as a young Republican activist.
I had an opportunity to meet Mr. Thompson and have lunch with him about 15 years ago before moving back to North Florida. Knowing that he posesses one of the most brilliant minds in Florida politics, I eagerly awaited my copy of the book and I was not disappointed!
The best part of this book is that you can read it through cover to cover OR you can read parts of it here and there. Just jump in and you will be bombarded with informative facts and opinions about a wide variety of issues. This makes the book not only a great read but an excellent reference tool.
As the Republican State Committeeman in Nassau County Florida, I will eagerly be recommending this publication to my friends in politics. You probably won't agree with everything Mike Thompson has to say (no one can agree with everything anyone has to say) but you will definitely appreciate his wit and wisdom. I am glad to see that Mr. Thompson has not faded into the sunset!
Book Description
It's 1886 and Dr.Viveca Lancaster is frustrated by the limits placed upon female physicians of color. When she is offered the chance to set up a practice in the small all Black community of Grayson Grove, Michigan she leaves her California home and heads east. The very determined Viveca is one of the few nineteenth century Black women to graduate from the prestigious Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania but she needs more than determination to face down handsome Nate Grayson, the Grove's bull-headed mayor.
Nate Grayson goes to the train station expecting Dr. V. Lancaster to be a man. When the lovely dark-skinned Viveca introduces herself he is speechless, then wants her back on the train and out of his town. It's 1876 and women aren't supposed to be doctors, men are. However he isn't prepared for her stubbornness and fire, nor for the vivid way she heals, then steals his heart.

A Very Vivid Historical/Romance Novel.......2007-03-31
This is the second novel I read by Beverly Jenkins, 'Night Song' being the first. I just have to say I thoroughly enjoy her writing style. I could not put either book down! You can't help but fall in love with the main characters and it feels like your watching a movie with the descriptive storytelling. She made the characters and the story jump off the page for me. And you not only get a great history lesson, you get some very HOT and steamy romance...WHEW...I will be reading Indigo, next and I will not stop until I have read all of her historical/romance novel. A Definite MUST Read!
Excellent!!!.......2006-10-31
Excellent. Beverly is one of my favorite authors. She is probably the BEST female author! Her stories grab you from the very first page and you are thoroughly entertained until the end. You can always expect a great ending. I have read all of her books. I have never been disappointed. Excellent!!!
Taking care of business..........2005-01-23
It's no secret that for many years, even in this day and age, that women are often deemed inferior to men, and that our rightful duties are taking care of hearth and home, and leaving the work to the men. In Beverly Jenkins' novel VIVID, we are introduced to Viveca Lancaster, an African-American female physician. Anxious to put her medical degree to work, Viveca, or Vivid as she is better known, applies for a position in the small town of Niles, Michigan. When she learns that the job is hers, she's ecstatic. That is, until she meets Nate Grayson, the mayor of Niles.
Nate is surprised, to say the least, when he learns that the doctor he allowed his aunt to hire is a female. When he discovers his aunt's duplicity, Nate is determined to put Vivid on the first train back to where she came from and hire a real doctor, a male doctor. Nate soon discovers that Vivid is a woman of inherent strength and one who is determined to prove herself capable of the job at hand. After much persuasion, Nate finally decides to give Vivid a chance to prove her worth, and in the process discovers an attraction to the feisty doctor.
I must admit, I've never been much of a history buff, and because of the historical nature of the majority of Beverly Jenkins books, it was my intention to avoid her books at all costs. Thanks to the advice of a dear friend of mine, I learned that I may have been a bit presumptuous in my decision, so I decided to give Ms. Jenkins' historical romances a try. VIVID was my first Beverly Jenkins read, and I've been hooked ever since.
Ms. Jenkins tell her stories with such realism, it's as if she actually lives in the era of which she writes. I also like the fact that the heroine in this novel was not one of those weak-willed women who felt dependent upon a man to be someone. Instead, she was strong-willed and ready to fight tooth and nail for what she believed in. VIVID was a sensually romantic story and one in which the brief history lesson we are treated to enhances, and not detracts, from the story.

Romantic historical fiction is exciting, fruitful and steamy.......2003-09-14
The story of a Black female physician in the 1800's can hardly describe the richness of this tale. The characters are lovable and loving. Following their love story and learning important facts of the times was pure joy. Jenkins descriptions of emotions, erotic and historical, draw you deeper and deeper into the story.
Having recently become a reader of historical romance, I will read every story Jenkins creates.
Touching.......2003-01-24
It steamy love story with a historial backdrop. It's wonderful to read of the dignity, grace and respect African Americans had for one another. Read it with someone you love.

Running 100 miles from north to south and 200 miles from east to west, the Sandhills make up about a quarter of the state of Nebraska and constitute the largest grass-stabilized dune field in the Western Hemisphere. Sparsely settled, the region has inspired a fine literature, numbering books by Jim Harrison, Mari Sandoz, and Merrill Gilfillan, among other writers.
Stephen Jones's The Last Prairie is a welcome, elegant addition to that library. An inspired blend of science, natural history, ethnography, and memoir, it recounts Jones's travels along the Niobrara River and deep into the heart of dune country--once the province of buffalo, cranes, and scattered bands of Pawnee and Cheyenne Native Americans, now the site of huge ranches and, as Jones notes, an army of white-tailed deer and other former denizens of wetland forests that edged out onto the plains with the disappearance of large predators. "When it comes to ecosystem disturbances," Jones notes, "the white-tailed deer are just the tip of the iceberg," and indeed the Sandhills are threatened at every turn by industrial agriculture and other manifestations of putative progress. Jones considers some of the programs that have been advanced to save the area, including the apparently ill-advised "Buffalo Commons" preserve that residents fear would make the region an unnatural zoo; he suggests instead a more modest prairie preserve that would attract tourists and provide new revenue for the region's residents, now dependent on ecologically destructive ranching.
But Jones's book is less a program for action than a literate, attractive celebration of a place unlike any other--a book that will inspire readers to go and have a look for themselves. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
It is an area that has captivated and inspired travelers, philosophers, and artists for centuries. Long celebrated as one of the most visually stunning regions of the American landscape, it is also one of the most historically significant. And now, this vast, 25,000-square-mile expanse known as the Nebraska Sandhills is brought to life with passion, perspective, and ecological timeliness in an unforgettable collection by Stephen Jones.
The Last Prairie is an extraordinary triumph of the essayist's art. By turns graceful and penetrating, introspective and universal, ruminative and prescient, the 20 essays in The Last Prairie embodies the essence of Sandhills life. Jones delivers a series of riveting accounts of the Sandhills, flora and fauna, wildlife, and rich cultural history. Fascinating descriptions of bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and the annual migratory flight of a half-million sandhill cranes stand alongside equally vivid accounts of trailblazing homesteaders, range wars, and devastating prairie fires. Jones speaks eloquently to such timeless themes as humanity's search for community and the ties that bind man and nature.
Customer Reviews:
A lyrical book about a fragile habitat.......2001-06-26
Mr. Jone's admiration, appreciation and concern for this very special ecosystem shines through this lovely book. In it, he intertwines Native American myth, Plains history and well researched scientific data into a cohesive and readable overview of the Sandhills of Nebraska.
Through his eyes, we visit and experience a landscape of beauty, solitute, history and rich wildlife. It is, in turns, thought provoking, humourous, enlightening, yet never preachy. Steve is most respectful of the current private owners of these lands, and integrates their ongoing stewardship into well reasoned suggestions to insure the long-term integrity of this fecund habitat for posterity.
Sandhills Classic.......2000-07-13
The Last Prairie: A Sandhills Journal is an astonishing blend of nature, myth, and love of the land--richly textured with wry wit and something very close to wisdom. It's so deeply rooted in love and its own particular landscape that it transcends locality and becomes universal. In other words, it's a classic, akin to Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Writing, details, and a sensibility to treasure.
A lovesong to an alluring, little-known place.......2000-06-17
Stephen Jones notes in the book that the Sand Hills of Nebraska make up one of the few "dark spots" on those wall posters featuring a satellite view of the United States at night. It is, truly, a wide open space, and he does the landscape great justice with his evident love for the land, its wildlife, its people and history.
For those who think Nebraska is simply home to a football team and endless acres of corn, "The Last Prairie" should open some eyes.
Jones is a prose poet. He makes the Sand Hills live and breathe right there on the page. An excellent, deeply-felt homage to one of America's little-known (thankfully?)great natural treasures.
When a book makes you dream about a place you've never been........2000-05-31
As often happens in Washington, DC, I got inside information. The author (my eighth grade history teacher) tipped me off about his book, before it was available. I got to read a "galley" I think it is called, and felt even more like an insider. It's exciting when a friend publishes a book, and when that friend telegraphs, with the sound in his voice, that this one might be something special. Steve knows. I read the hardback copy as soon as I got it. Growing up in Colorado gave me some appreciation of this majestic place to the East, which I now plan to visit for the first time. Stephen Jones has woven history, geography several sciences into a literary work of art, that can provide great inspiration, even to the uninitiated. His images are vivid, whether he is describing the hard-scrabble personalities that live there or the spirit-ghosts of Native Americans that have long since perished. His treatments of the landforms and myriad species of animals that dwell in the Nebraska Sandhills, are characteristically perfect. He has written a couple of other nature books, including one with his photos, called the Shortgrass Prairie. What many do not know about Steve is that he was diagnosed with a back problem before he undertook his arduous weeks long trips, the several hundred miles East. He would not want me to mention this, Steve is a low key guy. But his courage is, well, another story. I hope everyone who loves nature, and our vanishing wild places will read this book and be inspired and dream and go there.

Book Description
Description: Live Through This brings together more than 30 of the most exciting art, music, and fashion personalities who are changing art making in New York. New art practice is now intimately tied to the lived experience of the artists themselves, and this book, through more than three hundred color photographs of artists, artworks, studios, off-duty behaviors, zines, concerts, openings, and parties, illustrates and examines the nature of this relationship. Thoughtful criticism is provided by five essays: Larry Rinder writes about the groundbreaking nature of Fort Thunder and Providence scene, Jeffrey Deitch offers an historical and personal look at New York's underground, musician Philip Guichard describes the past five years of music in the city, digital artist Cory Arcangel talks about collectives and new media, while Kathy Grayson provides a behind-the-scenes thesis. Major attention is paid to artists working in New York City, but also in Providence and San Francisco. The list includes several major names in art, fashion, and music, but some decidedly underground ones, thus emphasizing community affiliations and working collaborations. This is a most authentic look at what New York's art scene truly is, organized and produced by the members themsleves through extensive collaboration.

trip.......2007-01-13
live through this is one of my favorite art books.
its beautifully designed and laid out, and you can't ask for anything better from deitch.
i constantly find inspiration in these pages.
let's not over-hype.......2006-11-05
My main gripe is that this paperback is shoddy and the pages come apart after a couple
of reads.
Otherwise, fun, typical collegetown artwork by pampered kidz who never heard of Iraq.
The photos try to shock us with underground daring, but in reality, the antics are frat rat.
Still, the artwork is energetic and there are fairly fresh design elements.
I think that this book would be useful to red state artists who want to see what the cool
people are up to.
GREAT.......2006-06-26
It's absolutly great publication. You will find inside what Deitch thinks its "in". Perfect design.
This Book is RAD.......2005-10-04
Combine the exhaustive efforts of editor Kathy Grayson with the hippest goings-on in the New York art world and you get a book that is both a work of art in itself, as well as a refreshing guide to the scene. This book is an awesome way to experience the sometimes seedy happenings, parties, and explosive personalities firsthand.
You Couldn't Live Through This.......2005-10-01
Peter Schjeldahl said "artists tend to show up in gangs. You come to the city with your friends, meet other friends, hang out in bars, become a group, and foment a movement-" and that's exactly what Deitch and Grayson capture with this book: An ecstatic moment frozen in vivid print and pictures and then drawn out in time for your (re)viewing pleasure. With over 140 pages of blisteringly cool arts and letters, this volume not only conveys the non stop creative action of this scene but gives you Grayson's truly insider perspective. Countless candid photos documenting both the art-making and their accompanying parties, give you a real sense of a community of desire- talented young people coming together in a specific place and time over some things they love: making art and causing trouble. This book is at once a record and a product of its movement. I'll never be able to read a museum catalog again.

Book Description
The joyful cacophony of color that envelopes visitors to Guatemala may seem misplaced at first. After all, the nation has only recently emerged from a 36-year civil war that destroyed its infrastructure and claimed more than a million lives. But to the authors of ¡Viva Colores!: A Salute to the Indomitable People of Guatemala, it is a vivid expression of a 1,500-year-old spirit that refuses to die.
Photographer Paola Gianturco and writer David Hill offer inspirational profiles of a people who have endured and, indeed, gained strength, thanks to the bounty of their land, their beliefs, traditions, and kinship with one another. People like Luis.
Luis was orphaned as a small child. The aunt and uncle who took him in sent him into the streets to hawk trinkets and cadge pesos from tourists. He quickly figured out that he could do better if he learned the tourists' language, so he taught himself English. At 18, he became a licensed tour guide. Five years later, he was begging again, a homeless panhandler, brought low by demon rum. Then he found AA, which helped him get sober and gave him a reason to live. He traveled his country, launching AA programs. Today, he's a doting grandfather and popular tour guide. Luis' story is but one of many Gianturco and Hill have discovered in their travels through Guatemala. Readers of their book will enjoyand be inspired bymany more.

This salute will get your attention and admiration. The colors are breathtaking. Indeed, Viva Colores.
Beautiful Book & Great Gift Idea.......2006-12-16
I'm a traveler, but no matter how much time I can spend in a place, I inevitably feel like I'm just scratching the surface. Even when sitting in a cafe or small square away from the usual tourist destinations, I always feel like I'd like to learn more about the "ordinary" folks walking past; VivaColores does just that, and the book proves I am right in my belief that even the most average-seeming people can be extraordinary. The book is a journey into Guatamala, but more so, it's about discovering the the rich lives of the people there.
Like Gianturco's prior books, this one is filled with great photography, enlightening text, and serves well as a conversation-starter on your coffee table. But, reading VivaColores also makes you feel like a better person for the time spent.
I highly recommend this book as a gift to anyone, or to yourself. Enjoy!
Capturing the Essence.......2006-11-11
The images in Viva Colores expertly capture the essence of Guatamala. In addition to being fine art, the photographs tell stories that convey the hopes of hard working people in a country poor in almost everything but spirit.
Experience the Bounty of Guatemala through Vibrant Photos and Profiles.......2006-10-31
I always keep an eye out for new books by photographer Paola Gianturco. When I opened VIVA COLORES, words like stunning, beautiful, gorgeous just rolled out! The photographs here are so vibrant, the book pulls you in to explore what else you'll find beyond its sheer beauty. And what you do find is a beauty of another kind in addition to its visual artistry. You'll find the strength, the soul of a people.
The text by David Hill succinctly and eloquently gives voice to the valor and courage of everyday Guatemalans who have flourished against all odds. The people profiled share dreams for themselves and their country, like 12-yr old Maria, one of nine children, who wants to be a doctor. Her family is so poor that they can't buy food, yet so resourceful since the father rents land to grow their own food. Lucky for Maria that her parents understand the value of education, so she goes to school and excels and now has a scholarship ensuring her continued learning.
The text is written in Spanish and English, enabling so many more people to journey to this dynamic country and experience its spirited people. Like eye candy these rich color photographs make this book a wonderful gift. And the benefits don't stop there. The authors have designated the proceeds to benefit the PAVA Foundation, which works with villagers in Guatemala's highlands building bridges, schools, water pipelines, providing teachers and scholarships, amongst its many services. Truly a great book and gift, for so many reasons.
Book Description
"Engaging and thorough . . . the best modern biography of the man. Why isn't there a great movie about Sir Walter Raleigh? His life had everything."
-Los Angeles Times
Tall, dark, handsome, and damnably proud, Sir Walter Raleigh was one of history's most romantic characters. He founded the first American colony, gave the Irish the potato, even trifled with the Virgin Queen's affections. To his enemies, he was an arrogant liar, deserving of every one of his thirteen years in the Tower of London. Regardless of means, Raleigh's accomplishments are unquestionable: he was the epitome of the English Renaissance man.
Raleigh Trevelyan has traveled to each of the principal places where Raleigh adventured-Ireland, the Azores, Roanoke, and the Orinoco-finding new insights into Raleigh's extraordinary life. His research gives a freshness and immediacy to this detailed, convincing portrait of one of the most compelling figures from the Elizabethan era.

Excellent book for Elizabethan fans.......2004-11-17
This book has compelled me to write my first ever review. I've rarely read a more enjoyable biography. Although long and very dense, it is well cross-referenced, and well structured.
The depth of research is astounding, and I was particularly impressed that the author had actually traveled to all the key locations, offering a level of colour and feel not otherwise possible.
There is also a great detail of content outside of Sir Walter's own life that is immensely valuable for providing context (so important when reading about another time and place). For this amateur Elizabethan student, the opportunity to read about my favourite characters and the key events of the age from a different perspective was truly enjoyable.
At times the book shows the author's bias, but he carefully lets us know when it's his opinion, and I for one welcomed it based on his depth of knowledge.
Bravo to the author, and to those considering reading this book, a big word of encouragement. Enjoy!
New insight - legend or fop?.......2004-09-21
It is recognized that the author as a descendant of Raleigh would be somewhat biased in his assessment of his subject. With this in mind the portrayal is more balanced than one would think from the preconception and the views of others on this book. The conception most often associated with Raleigh for those unaware of his breadth of activities is that of a dandily dressed (Vincent Price) fop who laid down his cape for the queen. If one delves a little farther into common knowledge we know that he had something to do with the failed Roanoke colony. The gift of Trevelyan's biography is to fill out these clothes. To put flesh upon the man who inhabits the foppish attire. By the time the book takes us to Raleigh's second stay in the Tower, and Trevelyan tells us that people often came to see "the legend" on his daily walks upon the wall, we believe that indeed he was exactly that - a legend. The true measure of biography is that it gives the faults and failings, yet lets one follow the maturing person. Raleigh, indeed had many failings, but he nonetheless comes across in Trevelyan's telling as a compelling and interesting individual. If the Queen, Cecil (Wm.), Walsingham, and Drake are the gods of that era, then certainly the Raleigh of Trevelyan's telling is a giant. The mark of good non-fiction is that it encourages further exploration into the era in which it is set. Trevelyan's book is a must read for those with any interest in this period of English history, particularly that touching on the rise of empire and the role of maritime successes.
Sir Walter the great.......2004-02-08
Sir Walter Raleigh was a little of everything. I read this book along with the new Benjamin Frankin: An American Life, and have determined that there's more to these guys than the scant information we were all given in school. What an eye-opener this book was. Well written, well researched, and well . . . just an overall entertaining good read. Highly recommended.
