A Must Read for Every Man.......2007-05-14
I bought this book when I was 49. This book was everything that I had hoped and more. By following the instructions in this book, and exercising, I was able to make love all night long and experience total body orgazisms and keep going. I had girls calling me for dates. I only wish that I had discovered this book when I was younger. Now that my boys are older, I'm buying two more copies for them.
Clench WHAT? Definitely requires a Personal Trainer.......2007-01-31
Eh..
this book was ok. interesting in the fact that it was written by a woman who is a "professional sex surrogate". if that's not a euphimism, I don't know what is.
written from a female perspective, it may seem to be an easy thing to do as she suggests, and some of her male 'colleagues' are reported to be doing these tightening maneuvers, however, just as some people may be able to roll their R's, their tongues, or cross their eyes, others simply cannot, for whatever reason.
I just think a little more disclosure would be prudent to avoid returns - :D
Huge surge of confidence.......2006-09-21
Guys, this book is a must have. We've all heard about working your PC muscle out to last as long as you want. Well, this book tells you that but it goes so much deeper. It has a lot of fun exercises (especially if you have a partner). Even if you just halfway follow her instructions, you'll accomplish amazing results. My confidence has skyrocketed because I had mastered the technique. Trust me, BUY THIS BOOK!
EVERY GUY SHOULD KNOW THIS SECRET!.......2006-09-14

straight to the point.......2006-03-09
This book is a great (and entertaining) reference for those looking to improve or expand their love life. DR Keesling does a wonderful job with a often frustrating topic. She does well by approaching the subject with simple knowledge and humor.

Happy Accident.......2007-09-11
My finding this book was quite the happy accident. It was like making a good friend. It's colorful and creative presentation didn't prepare me for the possibilities I could explore inside. On those days, when you want or need something more to hold on to, pick up this book. Every page holds something of value!
Good info, hard to see visually.......2007-06-13
Nice book....I appreciate the author's writing style, however the use of multi-colored text combined with the funky fonts makes it difficult to read.
Absolutely Splendiferous.......2007-03-24
This book is a must have for any woman or young lady. I kept checking out this book from the library over and over again anytime I felt pressured by friends, family, or even pop culture to become something I wasn't. I finally realized that with all of the late fees I racked up I could have purchased the book five times over.
It encourages women to live life to the fullest and be who they truly are. If you are having even the slightest bit of confidence issues, this book is for you. Dive In!

Book Description
"WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES isn't just another book. It is a gift of profound insight, wisdom, and love. An oracle from one who knows."
Alice Walker
Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. Her name is Wild Woman, but she is an endangered species. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., Jungian analyst and cantadora storyteller shows how women's vitality can be restored through what she calls "psychic archeological digs" into the ruins of the female unconsious. Using multicultural myths, fairy tales, folk tales, and stories, Dr. Estes helps women reconnect with the healthy, instinctual, visionary attributes of the Wild Woman archetype.
Dr. Estes has created a new lexicon for describing the female psyche. Fertile and life-giving, it is a psychology of women in the truest sense, a knowing of the soul.

CP Estes: Women Who Run With Wolves.......2007-05-20
This is prolly the best book I have ever read. Brings me to tears, has me laughing, and everything in between. VERY good for women and men, as what she touches on relates to both sexes, although she focuses on women. Excellent book.
Women Who Run With The Wolves.......2007-05-14
I love this book. Great for any woman struggling to know and feel comfortable with the real self living in her skin. Great to know you're OK!
A book that should resurface again and again as great feminist lit.......2007-05-11
Each time I move and pare down my bookshelves, I immediately set aside as untouchable those books without which my personal library would be less rich. "Women Who Run with the Wolves" is one such book. I pick it up in good times and bad ones, and I'm always grateful for the experience.
My favorite book - my favorite author. .......2007-04-16
I first read this book 10 years ago with a group of women who met weekly, and I continue to refer to it often as a reminder of the insights that are recounted so well through the amazing storytelling talents of Clarissa Pinkola Estes. She has a way of speaking directly to my soul through her words and thoughtful analysis. A beautiful, life changing book!

You will read this book over and over.......2007-09-30
This book was off the hook. Did not think a book like this existed until I found it on Amazon. I don't usually leave reviews but I had to! Miss T. definitely knows what she's talking about. There are alot of great tips in here for the bedroom that will definitely blow men away but not only that. I really feel that my confidence has been boosted, in terms of how I feel about myself as woman (a sensuous one!) If you wanna find out how to please a man (even more) and what keeps them comin for more read this book!
Couldn't get more detailed than this... EXCELLENT READ.......2007-07-25
I received this book in the mail in the evening on 7/23 and finished it the next morning. It was hella good! If you've never "turned a man COMPLETELY out," that's all about to change! Sista girl shares blow by blow tips, tricks and techniques on how to send your man home with a smile EVERYTIME. I highly recommend this book for inexperienced and "seasoned" lovers alike, as it has something in it for EVERONE. $10.00?? The info in this book is PRICELESS. I'm glad to have found it!
Finally a sex book for black women!.......2007-05-20
What I like most about this book is its conversational tone. It was like talking to a close girlfriend who was giving you advice on what to do to spice up your sex life. I was a little skeptical at first, but I have actually tried some of the things in her book and they worked! Miss T really outdid herself and I look forward to reading other items by this author!
Just okay.......2007-05-14
If you've been raised from your childhood to be comfortable in your own skin-becoming sensuous may not be an issue for you. However, if you do not know the power of your womanhood regardless of what you look like-this book may be the light and the truth for you. Too much focus on what you can get materialistically from the opposite sex once you become "sensuous".
Pleasure.......2007-03-20
This book is informative, humorous, and extremely well written. I love Miss T's candid and sometimes brutally honest approach to educating one on how to "improve" one's technique. You are never to old/young to be taught new/improved skills.

This is the 30-years-in-coming sequel to Walter M. Miller's seminal work, A Canticle for Leibowitz. It chronicles the odyssey of Brother Blacktooth St. George, a fallen monk of the Leibowitz order who becomes secretary to the politically ambitious Cardinal Brownpony. Brownpony is involved in a complex scheme to break the rule of the Hannegan Empire, which dominates the 35th-century's post-apocalypse world. Even though Brownpony's plans will ultimately restore both the world and the declining Papacy to some form of order, he is not a religious man, although he is drawn to those who are. He sees something profoundly religious in Blacktooth, who on the surface seems to be a disgraced monk foundering in confusion because of his love for a woman, his semi-pagan visions of the Virgin Mary, and his nomadic heritage. Ultimately it seems that Brownpony's--and indeed humanity's--salvation may lie with Blacktooth, who will never quite realize how great is the gift he's been given.
Book Description
Forty years after the classic
A Canticle for Leibowitz, Walter Miller returns to a world struggling to transcend a terrifying legacy of darkness, as one man undertakes an odyssey of adventure and discovery that promises to alter the destiny of humankind . . . .
Isolated in Leibowitz Abbey, Brother Blacktooth St. George suffers a crisis of faith, torn between his vows and his Nomad upbringing, between the Holy Virgin and visions of the Wild Horse Woman of his people. At the brink of disgrace and expulsion from his order, the young monk is championed by a powerful cardinal who has plans for him. Blacktooth sets out on a journey across a landscape still scarred by the long-ago Flame Deluge, a land divided by nature, politics, and war. He will find horrors and wonders, sins of the flesh . . . and love. As he encounters and reencounters a beautiful but forbidden mutant named Ædrea, he begins to wonder: is a she-devil, the Holy Mother, or the Wild Horse Woman herself?

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A sequel of sorts to A Canticle for Leibowitz, but definitely not in the same class. This book is more concerned with the conflicst within the church of the time, and the conflicts in the greater political arena of what was the USA at one time.
It follows one particular lower order monk who proves influential because of what he knows, and can see.
Profound Disappointment.......2007-02-18
Perhaps I had been expecting a true sequeal to the original. I was so excited when I saw the book but instead of a taut, touching tale I got a rambling, frequently boring, difficult to follow story that I had to force myself to finish. It seemed more a tale of politics and religious infighting than a science fiction story.
Problems? How about WAY too many characters, many with multiple names. I consider myself intelligent and widely read but the rush of people created such a flux that the plot seemed almost secondary. I liked the hero but for all his potential he did little more than whine, worry and wonder. His boss, the antipope, became the star of the show along with the swordsman.
The story did not "flow" and bogged down several times in minor details. The first section covereding the time in the abbey passed uneventfully but for a few personal crises. Then we journey toward the conclave and are introduced to host of new folks. Finally we arrive in the city and meet yet another cast of characters. The story was as much about Native American culture as anything. The language issues, interesting at first, became tiresome as we switched from various dialects (some almost unpronouncable with special symbols) to Latin (frequently) to English. All in all, not a success.
Secularism versus Parochialism.......2006-09-10
Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman takes place during the second era described in A Canticle for Leibowitz. The world and its institutions are recovering from the horrific imapct of global nuclear war. Much as was seen as civilization came out of the Dark Ages, secular matters are now moving to the forefront. Whereas the first era saw an Americanized version of the Roman Catholic Church rule with benevolent autocracy from its Seat near what was St. Louis, Missouri, the rise of nation-states - in general and one in particular - in the second era has created a classic thesis/antithesis situation. The resolution of this conflict, the synthesis, is of course already known to readers of Cantcile. The third era finds nation states back doing what they do best; nanmely fight among themselves and - in doing so - reaping yet another whirlwind from what they have sown. But, knowing this does not spoil the thrust and inherent charm of this story, however.
While the primary thrust of the story is the telling of the battle between the secular and the parochical, it is told on two separate and distinct levels. The first is the battle between the Church, shown in the manifestation of the Papacy and the nation-state of Hannigan and its rulers who seek to treat the aforementioned Papacy much as the Medicis did in the Renaiassance.
The second is in the trials and ultimate redemption of Brother Blacktooth St. George, a native American monk. Miller chooses native Americans - both Catholic and pagan - to populate his parochial world. With a native American Cardinal seeking to wrest the Papacy away from its thrall to the Hannegan, this adds yet another layer to the conflict that ultimately leads to - as it has in our world - the demise of the plains culture. Amidst thos realpolitk, Blacktooth St. George is on a quest for his own spirituality purity and center. Like the world aroun him, the path is fraught with temptation and peril in more=or-less equal measures. The end for St. George is peaceful after he elects for mental and spirtual sanity to reject the secular trappings of both church and state in favor of a simple, austere and satisfying conclusion.
Yes, this ghost-edited sequel/digression is a bit of a mess. Not completed, so much as assembled, by a ghost writer, the narrative is repetitive in parts, but is fascinating as an insight into the writing process. Consider the circumstance of having spent years sporadically writing a story that you never had the drive to complete. As you came back to work on it, you probably would not spend much time reviewing what you had alreay produced. This would likely result in your tending to repeat yourself from time to time. And, you probabaly wonder much care about it as the writing process moved along; after all that is what editing resolves.
But, imagine that the this sporadic writing is further complicated by the fact you are 1) suffering from some mental instability that leads to suicide, 2) you have become disaffected and disenchanted by that which you held as the center of your secular and parochial universes and 3) the world in general is a nastier place than you had hoped it would be some four or five decades after your generation gave its all to rdi the planet of ultra nationalism and autocracy.
When Miller wrote A Canticle for Leibowitz, the image of the Catholic Church was personified by deeply faithful priests represented in movies by actor like Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald. Miller, who experienced World War II and the Cold War and saw them as a sure sign of the corruption of man, wrote a story showing that religion was and should be the cynosure of how to live.
By the 1980s and 1990s however, Miller saw a Catholic Church that was far less avuncular; one that was consuming itself in a miasma of self-protective politics aimed in part at supressing scandals. In this book, Miller presents that Church in the same harsh and objective light that he flashed on the nation-state in his first book.
So, those who loved Canticle, be ready for a soemwhat difficult read and a shock. You are going to read Miller's thoughts and beliefs and convictions in a less organized, but far more authentic form. Don't be deterred by its lack of dulce et decorum. Instead rejoice in the opportunity to share in the joy of watching a human being's progress in understanding man and God!
Not Great But I Was Still Thrilled To Return To Miller's Future World.......2006-06-15
This book's predecessor, A Canticle For Leibowitz, is among my all-time favorite novels, and so I was naturally thrilled to find out that a sequel had been published. This novel, set roughly a generation after Book Two in "Canticle" tells the story of the politics of war and theology amid a very violent age in the future of humankind.
For those who do not know, Mr. Miller's twin novels take place many centuries from now in a world greatly altered as a consequence of nuclear warfare. The United States, like the Roman Empire before it, has fractured into a number of regional powers (Denver, Laredo, Texarkana, etc.) most of whom are actively in conflict with one another. Amid this new dark age the Roman Catholic Church strives to keep the light of knowledge burning, and in this era its monastic libraries are filled with books on such mystical and un-grasped subjects as the internal combustion engine, aeronautics, and advanced medicine. The hope is that one day humans will again reach the level of progress they had before the "Flame Deluge" and comprehend and use this stored wisdom.
Set in the militant kingdom of Texarkana, and concerning itself with violent conquest and the political intrigues behind the scenes in the election of a controversial Pope, the main character here, a monk in the Order of Leibowitz, takes us into this tale that covers but a few years of happenings, as opposed to the civilization-wide scale of the original Leibowitz work. Here one will find a good story and uncover further details of the nature of life in the post-fallout age, but there is sadly an emptiness to the prose that the first novel lacked. Where A Canticle For Leibowitz was rich and imaginative, this book is dry and hollow and its shallowness greatly impeded my acceptance of it.
There is also the nature of...authorship. The story goes that Miller completed this book shortly before his death (suicide?) in the 1990's, but rumor has it this was in fact ghost written by someone else, rather like the V. C. Andrews novels that are still appearing long after her demise.
Whoever authored this book, I am glad it is out there in the market and I wish more works were set in Miller's landscape, but there's no getting around the fact that this is an inferior sequel that does not measure up to the all-time classic from which it descends.
An Original Vision, but a flawed story.......2006-05-16
As a fan of Canticle for Leibowitz, I was curious about this sequel, written so many years later. I found the book to be less entertaining than Canticle and somewhat disappointing until I got to the end, when it began to come together and make just a bit of sense. But I was confused through most of it by the bewildering cast of characters who all seemed to have several odd names (Wooshin and The Axe, Blacktooth and Nimmy, Brownpony and the Red SomethingOrOther...). The backstory was never incorporated either, so we're left to figure out how many political entities are fighting for control of various places in the American southwest, with all new confusing place names. The many hordes of uncivilized peoples were hard to sort out as well. What was the difference between the Grasshoppers, the Jack Rabbits and the Wild Dogs? I don't know. And why is the papacy in America? I don't know that either.
At times the story seemed just political, at times it became mystical, and at times it seemed satire. Was the church holding things together, as it did in the Middle Ages, preserving the past as monks translate and save old books? Or was the church the cause of war, with Cardinal Brownpony organizing the hordes to attack the secular power of the Hannigan? Or was this just satire, as exemplified by the scene with the ridiculous conclave of ridiculous cardinals, holed up in their stench-filled quarters posturing for power while the mob howled outside, demanding they choose a pope? They choose the one truly delightful (though bewildering) character in the book, Amen Specklebird, an old, black hermit, to be the new pope. His papacy is soon in shambles and he is murdered after he goes back to his hermit's cave, desiring his old, simple existence back and leaving the papacy to the schemers. But violence fills this post-Apocalytic world.
The main character, Blacktooth St. George, is a also puzzle. He struggles with every aspect of his life: his work at the abbey as translator, his sexuality and attraction to the even stranger character, Aedrea, and his relationship with the church. He, like Brownpony, is only partly a Catholic. He retains the vision of his Nomad ancestor, and thus the title of the book. He cannot let go the the vision of the Wild Horse Woman.
As with Canticle, the book is quite literate, and I enjoyed the Latin references, but would there really be so many dialects after the Apocalypse? I kept wondering if there were subtle literary puns I was missing. Blacktooth is a literate and educated person compared to the masses, but this too is a puzzle. How did he come by his intelligence and knowledge of so many dialects and languages?
The book would have been better if if had been shorter and if the story had somehow illuminated the point of the novel more clearly. I don't know what Walter Miller was trying to tell us with this very weird tale. The book is certainly an original - not really like science fiction, but not the adventure genre either and certainly not spiritual literature. This book is not for everyone, and it's not surprising that the reviews here are mixed.

Seller is great, book is wonderful and i highly recomend it to all spouses. Shipping was superfast and well packed... Great Job....
for the INSECURE & DEJECTED only.......2005-08-21
this book is for people with low self esteem. its for guys with small penises. its for middle age men who no longer have the capacity to "get it up".
its for sad pathetic guys who think sex is the only thing worth living for. sad but true.
Boring.......2005-08-21
The book starts out very simple, gets a little better but than gets very boring.
NOT a how to guide........2005-05-12
For being geared towards men, this is definitely not the 'how to' guide I would have expected.
First off, like many other guys, I wanted basically a shop manual.. directions, maybe illustrations, specifics, etc. straight to the point.
I'd say about 75% of this book is a compilation of stories (that read out like the letters in Penthouse magazine, ironically which he used to work for). Many of the stories sound unnecesarily vulgar, and somewhat absurd. I didn't want to hear about some guy getting himself aroused alone and.. I'll leave the rest to you. He also had sections teaching you 'the way a lady should be treated' and to be honest, this section sounds like it was written by my mother to teach me how to get girls. (which is the LAST advice on the planet any of us would ever take)
If you're looking for a manual, or a typical 'how to' guide that we're all accustomed to, look elsewhere.
funny book.......2005-04-10
i have this bok as well as it's sister book how to drive your man wild in bed. and i must say this book is great although portions of it push on the absurd which makes it funny. masterton takes his work so seriously and roughly 45-50% of it is as stated before, absurd. i recommend this book as well as it's sister to those looking for a laugh.

Siliness.......2007-07-10
These tapes are so elementary they are embarrassing. I might have done well to listen to this woman's voice before buying. Her laugh alone, drives me up the wall. I think an intelligent woman, who is actually searching for answers, solutions or just insight, would be made angry by this persons flaunting of the ego and her idea of women today. LaRoche is about 30 years behind times.

Book Description
Generations ago, the Aincourt family was given a title and land for their loyalty to the king. But the former abbey they received came with a price -- a curse that no family member would ever know happiness.
Devin Aincourt, Earl of Ravenscar, makes no apologies for who he is -- a drinker, a womanizer, a gambler. Having been cast aside by his disapproving father years before, Dev is content to live out his cursed life in this hedonistic manner. Until his mother asks him to make a bold move to restore the family name and fortune: marry a rich American heiress. Believing it will be a marriage in name only, Dev agrees to marry Miranda. But he never imagined that this feisty, unconventional foreigner would have plans of her own: to restore Blackwater, the old abbey, to its former glory, to extricate Dev from the clutches of a devious mistress and to win his heart for her own. All while risking her own life to an unknown enemy.
For Dev and Miranda, love may be the most lasting curse of all.

a very unheroic "hero".......2007-05-01
Wow, it was really very hard to like the "hero" of this book. He spent years and years mounting anything that didn't move in every hellhole in London and all of its slums, he was completely manipulated by his controlling mistress, he was a raging consumer of alcohol and deeply mired in self hatred. Could my heart beat any faster? Yes, I concede that Miranda made him change once he got away from his mistress, but that really just makes it worse for me. What that really boils down to is that this man can be manipulated by anyone. And, I know the author never calls him an alcoholic but really. You drink that much for that long ....
Anyway, Miranda was great. So very nice to see a determined woman who is not a petty, spiteful whiner. I adored her. But, I just couldn't get past Devin's past. And really, he must have picked up several STD's on his way through the scores of myriad women, not to mention those he contracted from his mistress who was even more flagrantly promiscuous. All in all, loved the heroine, couldn't get past the hero's past.
I know it is a romance novel and so I am supposed to suspend my belief in reality but there is a limit past which I just cannot return. This was a decent read, but I felt the need for a strong dose of penicillin when it was over.
A really good romance story, but a rushed ending.......2007-03-24
Overall I really did like this book, and I would read more by this author. Devin and Miranda were great characters, and the "who's the bad guy?" mystery that was the backbone of this story was quite interesting and hard to guess. Devin is quite the desirable dark hero too, and Miranda was intelligent and spoke her mind (but not in an annoying way.) The passion between these two was heated, but don't read this book looking for a "sizzling read". It's not that type of romance book. Bedroom scenes come very late in the book, and they were rather glossed over. My ONLY true complaint was that the ending was wrapped up with such hyper-speed. The last 30 or so pages had many of the main characters confessing and purging their hidden secrets at an alarming pace just to wrap up the story. There was no reason for much of the confessions either - they were just spewing stuff like "I never wanted anyone to know, but I must confess!" It just felt so phony. The conclusion of the story was quite cleaver though, I just didn't like the style of delivery.
A Great Beginning In The Series!.......2006-03-05
SO WILD A HEART is a wonderful beginning to a terrific series! I recommend you follow up with THE HIDDEN HEART and then SECRETS OF THE HEART. All three books are easy to read regency romances with a flare of mystery. The stories are closely connected that it's best to start with the first in the series.
Candace Camp IS HABIT FORMING.......2005-05-09
I have to admit I am someone who has their nose stuck in a book a good majority of the time ... I have read so many excellent authors over the years (I am proud to be a grandmother) however, for some odd reason I have missed reading Candace Camp ...I picked up So Wild a Heart with my last grouping of romance books and once I started it I didn't want to put it down ... it was darling! I was "caught" from the very beginning which is something I really like in a book. I didn't think I was going to like Dev to begin with, (which often makes it difficult to really enjoy a book) however, like everyone else I fell in love with this man who was taught that he had to hide his feelings to be a "real man" ... it was so nice when he started showing that a "real man" shows his feelings (speaks a wife who is still head-over-heels in love with her sensitive husband of 35 years). ... books like this are a dream come true ... Miranda is a woman much ahead of her time, which I personally enjoyed ... not just pretty face without a thought in her head, which so many of the women of that era are portrayed as (and sadder yet, they actually were). There is so much anticipation of happiness, mixed with the frustration (you would like to reach through the book and grab a couple of people by their necks ... no I am NOT a violent person!!!) ... and topped off with excitement of a love fulfilled ... and so much more ... Where this may have been my first Candace Camp book I am now 3/4 the way through the 3rd book of this trilogy "Secrets of the Heart" and I am finding it just as wonderful. As I am writing this I am thinking that the one thing that this book definitely has is the ability to make one want to keep turning the pages ... I couldn't put it down ... and I am going back to the bookstore to purchase more ... what an absolute joy from beginnng to end. I truly don't think this is a book you would be disappointed in reading.
A real page turner, not to be missed!!.......2005-03-11
Devin might start out to be one of the more contemptable rouges I have read about - he really did some BAD stuff. And Leona was one of the worst mistresses - she was so controlling and nasty. When you start to realize how she manipulated Devin and worked her wiles on him, and underminded him at every turn, you began to feel sorry for him. Miranda was just what he needed, strong lovely, intelligent, and she just happened to realize that she could totally loose her heart to Devin. So, she agrres to marry and unknown to Devin intends to win him over 100% - no more Leona. This is just such a different kind of love story - and the characters of Miranda and Devin you want to make it. I was actually quite surprised by a few of the plot twists at the end and it was necessary for Devin to finally be free of guilt and also to understand how loathsome Leona had always been. I have hurried out to buy the next two books in this series - I feel Camp has several winners!!
Book Description
Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik is a spirited African adventure of a solo woman traveler whose overland excursion across the continent includes challenges, inevitable mishaps, and more than a few debacles.
Author and world traveler Marie Javins is an unflappable narrator, who takes even the most bizarre and patience-trying situations with a dose of good humor. Javins fell in love with Africa when she traversed the continent in 2001 as part of a larger world tour. She later returned to spend half of 2005 revisiting the people and places that had so impacted her on her first trip. Javins was struck not by the desperation of Africa, but by its hope — the dignity of its people, the vibrancy of its cities, and the inherent adventure that is inherent it offered.
Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik is a funny and compassionate account of the sort of lively and heedless undertaking that could only happen in Africa. Javins's brushes with wildlife are punctuated with more serious dilemmas. Through it all, Javins's experience of Africa is life-altering, and her witty observations make for the best kind of travel literature which takes its readers into the heart and soul of the continent.

Stalking the Wild Dik-Dik.......2007-10-04
I was seeking true account information about Africa and I found this book to be too negative with a focus mostly on the bad and not the beauty and good of Africa.
places not people.......2007-05-05
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. I had expected an account of adventures in Africa, but instead it seemed more of an average tourist tale, masquerading complaints about the discomforts of travel. It was a great book if you are a comfort traveler who wants to sightsee in Africa to the major tourist destinations, however the book lacks depth about any of the local cultures, and includes almost nothing on the people. Most of the book pases while the author is in a bus or a car, leaving much to be desired about what happens when she is not looking out a window.
Come along for a fun overland ride through Africa.......2007-02-04
The beauty of reading an account of a long overland journey is that you can live the experience through someone else, still enjoying your hot shower, comfy bed, and well-stocked pantry at home. Javins' book is one of those conversational, easy-reading tales that doesn't try to dazzle you with its erudite suppositions or try to make grand expositions on the nature of what's wrong with Africa. Instead there are just musings on impossible questions, such as "Should I be accepting personal responsibility for slavery, the price of coffee, and colonialism?"
The book mostly just goes for a long journey and takes you along for the ride: from Cape Town to Cairo via a meandering route up the east after heading through Botswana and Namibia. She admits that the first time she went to the continent it was just something to cross off a list: "Wash clothes. Buy toilet tissue. See Africa."
Javins' goal was to do it all without getting on a plane, as part of a round-the-world tour on the ground and water only. In the end she has to hop a flight from Sudan to Egypt to catch a freighter when, as expected, the schedule doesn't quite move as planned. The mishaps here are natural ones though, things that any traveler will encounter on the continent, with no scenes that make us feel as if the author was intentionally seeking out bad situations just to enliven the story. Of course the natural hurdles in Africa can be bad enough on their own. In this case it's a Namibian taxi driver who keeps nodding off at the wheel, a bus wreck in Ethiopia, and and enough scamster touts to fill a small city.
Despite the luxury camps and expensive safari trips Africa is known for, it is still a wild frontier for anyone trying to cross it by land and this book is a great way to figure out if you're up for it yourself. If you're not, you can ride along then go take a hot shower at home.
An odyssey.......2006-11-23
This is a fascinating travelog but it is also something more. It is an account of being on your own, experiencing loneliness and longing, but at the same time relishing the freedom to travel and explore the world in your own way.
I first followed Marie's journey "live" through her MariesWorldTour website in 2001, but I still found the book fresh and interesting. She often chose transport that was not the usual for tourists, such as long bus rides, and thus she met local people on their own turf where pretenses were dropped. There were risks involved, but she met them with courage, a sense of adventure, and a sense of humor.
I look forward to more books by this author.
I'm in agreement with the other reviewers.......2006-10-07
Therefore, I won't go into any detail here. Ms. Javins manages to balance the funny and serious sides of her experience just fine. It sounds trite for me to type this, but the book is both entertaining and educational. Looking forward to more of her books.
Book Description
Lester G. E. Rowntree (1879-1979), free-spirited adventurer and pioneering botanist, was fifty-two when she traded a comfortable home for the life of a peripatetic traveler in the California mountains, deserts, and forests. Through hundreds of magazine and journal articles, two acclaimed books, and uncounted public lectures, Rowntree shared her vast knowledge of California native plants and at the same time argued passionately for the protection of the state's bountiful flora. A mountain mystic who worshipped on Sierra peaks, bathed in alpine streams, and lived for months on beans and bread, Rowntree has remained an inspiration in native plant horticulture and plant conservation to this day.
A beloved classic first published in 1936, Hardy Californians is Rowntree's poetic sketch of California and its plant life. In charming prose, she takes us along on her annual seed-collecting journey through the state and gives a concise introduction to the complexities of California flora, climate, and geography. The book also gives information on the suitability of many native California plants for the garden. This new edition includes a comprehensive biographical essay, a chapter on Rowntree's horticultural legacy, an updated species list, and a complete bibliography of her writings.

If You Love Your Plants and the Worlds They Thrive In, Buy This Book!.......2007-07-12
First published in 1936, this seminal guide to California's native plants is a must-have for any gardener, Californian or not, who wants to work with rather than against nature in the garden. Lester Rowntree spent her summers exploring the back roads, desert washes, and mountain trails of California collecting specimens and documenting the habits and habitats of her beloved native plants. Her winters were spent writing up her notes and experimenting with propagating and growing native plants in her own garden in the Carmel Highlands just north of Big Sur. An amateur "plant enthusiast," committed conservationist, and gifted writer with an unpretentious style and a wry, gentle sense of humor, her keen insight into plant ecology years before the term "ecology" was coined will amaze, delight, and humble the contemporary reader. Lester Rowntree wrote another classic, The Flowering Shrubs of California (1939), regrettably out of print at this time but available in many libraries.
