good series..........2007-03-06
This was a good series from Janette Oke. It isn't one of her best, but I still really enjoyed reading it. I would recommend it to anyone who is already a Janette Oke fan. For new readers I would suggest starting with her other series such as Love Comes Softly or the Canadian West series.
One of my favorites growing up........2005-12-01
Originally my mom introduced me to this series because she thought I would enjoy it because it was from a guys perspective. Well she was right. I cant even count how many times I read through each of the books. I could always imagine being right there with him as he told his story. Eventually I was given this book collecting all four novels and again read through it over and over again. This being the only Janette Oke series I have read I cant really base it off of the other ones. But for me it was a great way to spend a rainy day or just any other time I felt like picking up a book.
All right overall.......2002-05-14
Personally, I don't care for the way Janette Oke used the first-person style of writing, with a man as her main character. Her man just doesn't seem like a real man, mainly because he acts and thinks along the same lines as Janette's women do in her other books. Overall, it was a mistake for her to use a guy to tell the story- I think the books would have been vastly better if Janette had used a girl's perspective.
Aside from that complaint-
This story begins with the childhood of the "narrator", and goes through the boy's growing-up years on the farm. Everything is peaceful and happy. Little incidents occur here and there- his grandfather comes to live with them, he gets his first dog, etc. Finally, he becomes a man. One night he overhears the men downstairs discussing the fact that he needs to get married. He decides that yes, he should get married, so bang! he goes out and does it. Then the books tell about his married life (I liked his wife, by the way.) During his married life they go through the Depression and he winds up on a road crew far from home. All of a sudden, at the very end, everything is resolved and he gets to go home.
Generally this story is pretty good, but I've read many books by Janette Oke that are much better. Like I said, I think what messed up this series was trying to use the guy's perspective. It just isn't quite right.
Seasons Series.......2001-08-04
I am an avid fan of Janette Oke, and have read every thing she has published. This is indeed a wonderful series, with descriptive scenes and true romance. If you haven't tried this one--give it a chance-it is a beautiful story.

This is one for your keeper shelf!.......2002-08-21
Dorothy Garlock proves once again that she's the queen of frontier romance. I have read this book many, many times. I laugh and cry and I am always glad to read it over again. It's the best of the best.
Excellent end to this trilogy... wonderful.......2002-04-12
Kain and Vanessa are another set of characters that will crawl deep into your heart. I really enjoyed reading of their escapades together.
Kain, the stepson of the vicious Adam Clayhill, meets Vanessa and her Aunt Ellie, and cousin Henry. The threesome are determined to travel to Junction City, and meet the brother of Ellie's dead husband (whom she was only married about a month to before his death) in order to locate kinfolk for her son, Henry. With no travel sense the trio are sure for some major problems, if not to lose their lives. Kain sees no other choice then to escort them to Junction City himself... although he's already discovered his strong attraction to the red-headed, Vanessa.
Ellie's son, Henry, is a simple-minded man and one of the main reasons the trio was taking this trip were because her fear of who would take care of him after she was gone, and not wanting to burden Vanessa with his care if she ever marries. She hoped they would find some kin, that would ease this fear for her. Ellie and Henry were not prepared for what they actually did find in Junction City. It seems there is no limit to the lives Adam Clayhill has destroyed... but you'll be pleased at the outcome of this story.
The double wedding that takes place in Junction City, will reunite the wonderful characters from the previous two books of this trilogy. You'll discover what has been occuring in the lives of Logan and Rosalee Horn, Cooper and Lorna Parnell, Arnie and Syliva Henderson, and many more. This reunion is perfect for the last of the trilogy... and what happens to the two villians, Adam and Della Clayhill, will give you satisfaction as well.
Along the way, you'll love the variety of characters from the two Texan brothers - Jeb and Clay, to John Wisner, and Mary Ben - the love of Henry Hill!
First Romance Book.......1998-07-31
This was the very first romance novel that was given to me 10 years ago when I was just 15 and I still treasure the images of the characters and the book itself. I just couldn't put the book down I have read and read this novel over and over so many times that I decided to store the book to keep it in it's original condition possible.
Anyone that enjoys the setting that this story is placed in will just enjoy reading this book I have not been able to find another that can top it. It will always be my favorite.

Look a little deeper. Don't be shallow........2007-01-05
No Promises in the Wind follows Josh (15) and Joey (10) Grondowski as they venture from their family in Chicago with their teenage friend Howie during the Great Depression. This realistic, and historical-fiction novel shows the turbulence of the 1930's - the starvation, unemployment, hopping trains. Devastation strikes as early as chapter two, keeping you intrigued.
Some say this book is boring, but they're being shallow. This book was written exceptionally well, with an upper-reading level.
This book has everything a teenage novel should have-a little action, a fifteen year-old boy who has a good character with some depth, a little romance, and an adventure.
Judge it for yourself, if nothing else you'll learn a little about the Great Depression and "a boy with the solemn name of Josh Grondowski".

No Promises In The Wind
By
Irena Hunt
If you're one of those people that can't go a week with out your parents, stop reading. This book is more for people that like staying away from their parents. This story is about two brothers living in the great depression and these young, strong, and intelligent boy run away from home, to escape the yelling from there dad, working early in the morning, and going to sleep hunger. Josh (the oldest brother) quickly learned that he would have to grow up quickly in order to live in the great depression. Josh and Joey (the youngest brother) would have to work just like an adult making very little money, for hard work. The jobs they encounter are a paper route and the circus. Personally I don't like reading books but this book was great! I recommend this book for thirteen and up. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! If you want to find out more read No Promises In The Wind.
No Promises in the Wind.......2006-10-31
Imagine growing up in the early 1930'ssinthemidst of the depression. Unfortunately for Josh Joey and Howie is a reality in Irene Hunt's No Promises in the Wind. Josh and his best friend Howie along with Josh's little brother Joey set out to make their own way in the world. These boys encounter an untimely death, some less than welcoming people, a fatherly truck driver, a second rate circus and a boastful gangster. Josh is a fifteen-year-old piano player with a sober attitude and big dreams. Howie is Josh's best friend who is also fifteen and a great banjo player. Joey is Josh's optimistic ten-year-old brother. This book was written by Irene Hunt and is not part of a series. It's main theme is responsibility. This book is a realistic fiction/historical fiction genre. I would recommend this book to anyone age ten and up. Though it is more geared towards boys it can be enjoyed by girls as well. I would also recommend this book to any one who is interested in the early 1930's. This is a great book and it teaches you alot about the "wild boy's of the road."
No Promises in the Wind.......2006-10-31
Two brothers Josh and Joey set off on their own because their father yells at Josh for asking for another potato for dinner and Josh becomes angry and he leaves. But Joey, even though Josh would have left by himself, comes with him in hope he can help his brother. They soon find however, that living on their own is not what it seems. I think this book is good if you like a somewhat dark story with a twist at the end. It is also good because of all the adventures they have on the way.
With the boys comes Josh's friend Howie. Howie is a very good musician like Josh, and they make music at their high school. Along their way, they get on a train, where a horrible accident changes their views, luck, and Josh's life. They meet many homeless people, chumps, gangsters, and even a friendly trucker that becomes their makeshift father. All in all this is a good book, but if you dislike books that are somewhat tedious, you may not enjoy this book.
No Promises In the Wind Book Review.......2006-10-28
If you didn't have food and couldn't get along with your family, would you leave your home? I would, and that's just what Joey, Josh, and Howie do in Irene Hunt's book of epic proportions.
In this book, Joey, Howie, and Josh leave their homes for a place with food and jobs. But Howie gets into an accident, so Josh and Joey get food and shelter from kind people by themselves. Then, while on the road, they meet a nice man named Lonnie. He takes them to get a job at the fair. But then the fair burns down, so they go and find a shed. They get into a fight, and Josh slaps Joey. Joey leaves, so many more tragedies happen, and after all that, the boys reunite.
This book is all it's own, and it's by Irene Hunt. It's very exciting, emotional, and sad, but also happy. It takes place in 1932, is non-fiction, is an adventure book, and the theme is that you should never give up, for you will most likely be okay in the end. The boys in this book sure are brave, have had a very hard life, and this book explains what it was like to live in 1932.
I recommend this book for ages 10+, for girls and boys, and not for younger children. It is non-fiction, always keeps you on your seat, and is a great book.
As you can see, No Promises In the Wind is a very exciting, adventurous book, and it is for many age groups. It is a very emotional book, so it should be read with caution. Sometimes, it also seems kind of boring, but in fact isn't, so keep reading!

Decent book, excellent writers, neat perspective.......2007-05-15
Plot twists actually worked. I don't often get surprised, but some parts of this book actually managed that. Mostly, it's very predictable, but the bird's funny, the plot keeps moving, and the characters are likable if not totally endearing.
The Thoenes haven't won all those writing awards for no reason. I don't think this is their best series, but it's all right.
Ok for a history book.......2007-02-15
This book reads very much like reading someones journal about their travels. Very little is actual dialogue between the characters. The covers of all three of the books display a woman prominently, but do not be fooled. They are mere background players to the man telling the story. This, and the other two, are great from a history aspect of America in the 1800s, but not much else. I like to see more interaction between the characters and not just what seem like recollections of the event from the leading male.
A GREAT WEEKEND READ!.......1999-09-20
I curled up for an afternoon with a good book and read all weekend without hardly looking up! Full of adventure, twists, a new bit of California gold rush history I had never heard of, I was completely caught up by the story. It was well worth the time! Better than a good movie, I would recommend this book to everyone from age 8 to 80!
A huge disappointment.......1999-08-10
I was very disappointed in this book. I loved the Thoene's Zion's and Saga of the Sierra series, but this was poorly done. I read the previous reviews and wondered if those people had read the same book that I had. The book TOLD me how to feel. I like to make up my own mind. This book smacked of a deadline--perhaps the author was in a hurry or writing something more interesting on the side. Anyway, not nearly enough time was spent developing the characters and their personalities. I was VERY disappointed. I've absolutely loved the Thoene's books, but now I'll have to be more careful.
A great read! I loved it!.......1998-09-30
The Thoenes have done it again! Just like their Saga of the Sierra series, this book pulled me in and hooked me good. I love tales of the west and this was one I have never heard of or imagined! (Steamboats used to sail up and down the central valley of California? WOW! Suddenly the floods near Sacramento last year begon to make sense!) The story is told in such a wonderful personal way. Anyone who loves the west will love this book! More, please!

GREAT BOOK!.......2004-12-14
Trying to find your relationship with God? This book is an awesome tool. Bill Butterworth uses his experiances, humor, and knowledge to lead you in God's direction. It really makes you examine your life and look at the areas you want to change. It also makes you examine your relationship with God. It's light reading with a GREAT message. If you've strayed off God's path or know someone who has, this is one resource that can help. I definately reccommend it to everyone, regardless of where you stand with God.

This is the Greatest of the series.......2002-06-21
I've read this book several times it was the first of the Collection that i read. My Grandmother sent it to me for my 16th birthday. i didn't read it for a while because i thought it looked corny. well i eventually started reading it, and once i started i couldn't put it down. i read the whole thing in 2 days. Then i started it over again. I have now read most of the collection. This book was i must say my favorite. My second favorite was The Historical Collection part 2. After that it would be Texas.
Historical novels.......2000-01-05
I wasn't sure if I would actually enjoy a historical novel. However, I loved this novel! All of the stories captured my attention, except for the last. However, you might enjoy it!
Couldn't put it down.......1999-06-16
This is a wonderful collection of stories. They each have a great plot with a little twist just to keep you reading. These types of books are escpecially good if you only have short times to read (has 4 stories).
