5 out of 5 stars Great Stories, and Incredible Food written by one of the masters of BBQ.......2007-09-06

If you like food, you will enjoy this book, but if you like BBQ in the real down home tradition your gonna love it. And if you read it after reading only one other book on BBQ then you will be like me, totally smitten.

Heck, because of this book, I had to go get a charcoal grill after many with a gas grill. Now my father in law thinks I am the better of the two of us when the grill is turned on.

I am still trying to keep from turning my life over to "low and slow" exclusively, but my PL&BBQ tshirt is in the mail.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book on all things Barbecue.......2007-08-21

This book was amazing in its simplicity to cover all things barbecue in such a straightforward and folksy manner, by Mike Mills, a genuine legend of barbecue. Mills discusses the culture of barbecue, what barbecue means to the people and families that barbecue, how to succeed at barbecue, and is even able to coax a few great recipes from the greatest legends of barbecue. Standing back, one realizes Mills has written a rare work, one that really captures the essence of what food means to people and a culture. Even more amazing is how unpretentious and genuine the whole book is.

And while the book stands on its own as a cultural history, the recipes are worth the price of the book. Most of the legends Mill's interviewed likely reluctant to give up their secret sauces, rubs, and signature dishes. So many of the recipes Mill's collects are various side dishes. I made Billy Bones Wall Cherry Sausage, and it is definitely a keeper, although next time, I'll cut back on the salt a little. Mike Mills graciously provides many of his "secret" recipes, including his magic dust seasoning. I made up a batch and put it to the ultimate test: Would it wake up a TV dinner? Yessirreee! I find myself using Mill's Magic Dust lots of places, and Mill's recommends using it on everything but ice cream. Actually, it would probably make ice cream taste better too! Finally, I made Sarge's Smoked Portobello Mushrooms, which were awesome!

Even as a simple home cooking book, I highly recommend it. But it's true strength is a cultural history of a truly American cuisine that's starting to come into its own.

5 out of 5 stars Tops For All Skill Levels.......2007-06-17

This is my favorite BBQ book, though maybe for different reasons than other reviewers like it.

I've been BBQing and grilling for many years, since I was a teen ager, and my main reason for preferring this method of cooking is because I'm no gourmet, and if you take BBQing at its basic level, it's a very easy method of cooking. By this I mean you don't need culinary school/professional skills to pull of good BBQ--just a lot of care and patience, plus the experience you will pick up as you go along.

I'm not planning to enter BBQ championships or competition. I just like simple recipes that taste good, with easy-to-get ingredients. And though this book can be taken as a championship BBQ manual, it is also easy enough, its ingredients basic enough, that even the back yard duffer like me can make the most of them.

The recipes are just about fool-proof, if you take the care and time to follow them properly. F'rinstance, the famous Magic Dust rub recipe is about as easy as mixing Nestles Quik, and you don't have to go to exotic asian markets to find the ingredients. I hate shopping and I like a recipe where you can get everything you need at the local supermarket.

You also don't need thousands of dollars of fancy BBQ equipment to get the job done here. Sure, you can do it all in a big fancy smoker, but I only have a regular 26" Weber charcoal kettle grill, plus the pint-sized Weber Smoky Joe for side jobs, and every thing comes out dandy. A food processor would certainly come in handy, though I don't even have that. It would make the job easier, but its not necessary.

On the other hand, if you are very ambitious, there's enough meat here for the most competitive cook. I don't imagine there is anyone BBQing out there who can't learn something, and a great deal, from this book.

One of my favorites is the grilled stuff peppers, which even the most incompetent [...] can throw together without straining yet which, in the hands of a BBQ master, can probably come out like ambrosia for the grilling gods.

The guy who wrote the introduction to this said it's the last cookbook you'll ever need, and though you should certainly get some others (I like Steve Raichlen's BBQ USA and Paul Kirk's Championship BBQing), this is the one to start with, even if you're brand new to the BBQ. It used to be a custom to give a newlywed bride a cookbook as a wedding present. That custom seems to have passed away in these days when wives don't cook. However if it still existed, this is the book I'd give them.

And there's one other benefit to BBQing, which they don't mention here--you don't have to clean the kitchen when you're done. For an old bachelor like me, who is a first rate lazy slob, this last thing can't be overemphasized. Just keep the grill cleaned & oiled, make sure you scrub all surfaces when going from chicken to anything else, let the charcoal cool down before you throw it in the garbage pail, uses paper plates, and dump everything right in the trash and your day is done.

5 out of 5 stars Best BBQ Foundation Ever.......2007-03-05

I bought a high-end (Lang) offset smoker a year ago. I was raised in the South, so I am no stranger to BBQ (slow cooked meat usually with wood). This was my 5th book on the subject. Most of them I purchased, tried a rub or sauce recipe, and retired to the shelf. However, Peace, Love and BBQ is different. It is the real deal. I am not a reader, but I find myself picking up this book and just reading for ideas and inspiration. It makes me hungry every single time. BBQ varies from region to region, and this book helps you understand regional preferences. It covers the fundamentals and provides recipes based on ACTUAL success stories of people and restaurants.

If you are a BBQ fan, this is your book. Buy this one first and save yourself some money. It covers a wide range of flavors in recipes that meld together in the BBQ world as determined by judges and customers. As with any cookbook, when you get a good foundation, you can adjust to your tastes as necessary (i.e. adjust spices for sweet or heat). Understanding that BBQ is a hobby, and admitting that I am biased, this is the best cookbook on a culinary subject that I have ever purchased! I believe that this book will change my approach to BBQ indefinitely. What a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Tall Tales Are Sometimes True.......2006-11-30

This is the only cookbook I've ever heard of that would make a person cry. Mike and Amy achieved a beautiful balance of story telling, how to and why to as well as showing a reverence for those of us who are out there in the BBQ world everyday. This great read is full of recipes that your grandmama never bothered to write down all the way to how my dad cooks a whole ribeye. (Yes, he's mentioned in the book.) Mike and Amy did what they set out to do: the gave the world the gift of an insider's view into what bbq culture is all about. I'm not only proud to own it, I'm proud to give it as a gift on any and all occasions.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars of love and (gory) death.......2007-10-10

Freely must I admit I was prejudiced before reading this.
I feel no love for Kazuma Kodaka's manga series. I found Kizuna one of the worst yaoi titles I have experienced up to now and this one volume manga has only one undisputable advantage, that of being a one volume only story...

First of all a word of caution: even considering the usual standards of yaoi, this one is particularly gory, sadistic and graphic. Not the sex, of course, that seems never to be graphic enough in any yaoi, but the situations which are crude to the utmost.

The plot presents us with some interesting possibilities.
The sado-masochistic love-hate between red-haired Shirou and one-eyed Sougetsu would have offered plenty of opportunities.
The character of Sougetsu's sadist lover could have been spicy and thrilling too.

Their first problem is their lack of depth: so much plot and psychological development was shoved into about 200 pages and too many logical connections are missing.
We are given short flashes, snapshots of sudden emotions and we have to build all the logical links by ourselves... Not a good idea. Not to mention that Sougetsu's obsessive love and pursuit of Shirou at the end appear a mere plot device...

The side characters have wasted potential. Rushed and shabby as they are, depicted just to evict some quick tear from us, they are just irritating.

All this shabbiness is adequately matched by the publisher who has printed the warning about reading from the back of the book in the front of the book instead.

If you're a Kodaka fan you probably will appreciate this story anyway. I cannot.

3 out of 5 stars Rough and intense.......2007-05-19

I found this story to be very hard to like. It was an endless rape-fest, with the none of the main characters having any likeable qualities. The only characters that I even remotely cared for were Fujimaru and his jailer and that was a deep sense of pity. All I will say about the little brother and his story is that I was actually happy that it ended up the way it did.

I was confused about the age of Fujimaru. He looked to be ten at the begining of the manga but was said to be much older, eighteen I believe. If that was true the poor kid needed growth hormones.

Rape, hardcore sex, rape, brutality, rape, blood and rape.

3 out of 5 stars Disturbing and Intense .......2007-05-13

Midaresomenishi is disturbing and intense. All of the characters have flaws. The hero is almost as vile as the main villan. The ending is anything but happy. These things aren't necessarily negatives. The story is meant to be dark, with a few rays of sunshine thrown in here and there. As a whole, this tale is one I will never forget.

4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2007-04-11

I had the Japanese version of this book and I like the cover on that one.The character design is quiet beautiful. And yes the relationships are brutal and I was hoping the manga-ka continues the story -somewhat.

5 out of 5 stars Daring Yaoi Work .......2007-03-25

I will not go into details about the story, because the other reviewers have already done so. I think this is one of Kodaka's best works, but it most definitely is serious, brutal, and violent. Her art which has a strong shonen manga influence with strong lines and lots of action, which works very well here. This is a story for adults who want more than the soft, pretty, fluffy yaoi which is the majority yaoi published in the US. If you are looking for something more than a cute romantic story about two school boys, I would recommend this book.

In the rural villages of Norway, there is an ancient belief that children inherit the qualities of the direction in which they are born. Nymah Rose, the last daughter of eight siblings born to a poor mapmaker and his superstitious wife, was a North-born baby. It is said that North-born babies are wild, unpredictable, intelligent, and destined to break their mothers' hearts because they all leave hearth and home to travel to the far ends of the earth. To keep her close, Rose's mother lied and told her she had been born of the obedient and pliable East. But destiny cannot be denied. One day, a great white bear comes to the mapmaker's door to claim Rose's birthright. Everything that comes after, as richly imagined by author Edith Pattou, is the basis for one of the most epic romantic fantasies ever told. East is a deftly woven tapestry that melds traditional fairy tale motifs of both Beauty and the Beast and East of the Sun and West of the Moon, with the haunting icy lore of medieval northern lands. Told in a changing chorus of voices, including that of Rose, her hopeful brother Neddy, her regretful father, the charmed white bear, and the Troll Queen whose selfish wish is the catalyst that seals Rose's fate, East will enchant any and all who venture within its pages. It is a tale for the Ages, and for all ages. Highly recommended. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Rose has always felt out of place in her family. So when an enormous white bear mysteriously shows up and asks her to come away with him, she readily agrees. The bear takes Rose to a distant castle, where each night she is confronted with a mystery. In solving that mystery, she finds love, discovers her purpose, and realizes her travels have only just begun.

As fresh and original as only the best fantasy can be, East is a novel retelling of the classic tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," told in the tradition of Robin McKinley and Gail Carson Levine.

The heroine saves the hero.

Enjoyed this lovely book. Rose is a strong and adventurous young woman.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER.......2007-05-29

This fantasy book is a must-read. Told in a somewhat journal form by Rose, a girl seeking something from life. Pattou created a splended book you can't stop reading. With lots of action and mystery, you don't know what to expect!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-19

My daughter really enjoyed this book. She even read it twice!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written.......2007-02-04

As my title suggests, "East" is an amazing book that is extremely well written. This is the best book I have ever read in my life.

Rose is a girl living with her poor family. One day a bear shows up at Rose's family's house. He tells them that if Rose comes with him, her sick sister will be well and great fortune will come to their family. Rose makes her decision and great adventure ensues such as a mysterious stranger joining Rose in her bed at night. Different characters and interesing sub-plots make this a memorable book.

Each chapter is from a different person's point of view about what is going on. While this may sound confusing, it keeps the story interesting and fun. I can assure you, there are no loose ends or confusing parts that are never answered. Edith Pattou's descriptive writing really gives you a picture in your head of what is going on. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-02-04

I read the first half of this book yesterday, and sat down for a little while this morning and found myself zipping through the last 250 pages. This is a wonderful story that hooked me from start to finish. It combines bits and pieces from the following tales: Beauty and the Beast, Cupid and Psyche, and East of the Sun West of the Moon. (I'd never even heard of the latter, but I found the original story online, so I'll read it asap!) Fans of Shannon Hale's retellings are sure to enjoy East.

Book Description

An exciting new treasury of Jewish stories and storytellers, from ancient tales and classics re-imagined to contemporary family stories, parables, and humor

"Why were human beings created?" goes a traditional Jewish saying. "Because God loves stories." Storytelling has been part of Jewish religion and custom from earliest times and it remains a defining aspect of Jewish life. In Because God Loves Stories, folklorist Steve Zeitlin assembles the work of thirty-six Jewish storytellers, each of whom spins tales that express his or her own distinctive visions of Jewish culture. Contemporary storytellers re-interpret stories from the Talmud for modern sensibilities, the Grand Rabbi of Bluzhov tells tales of the Holocaust, beloved comedian Sam Levenson regales readers with hilarious vignettes of Jewish life in America, and much more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stories from all walks of American- Jewish life.......2006-04-03

The idea of the anthology is a good one, though I wished it had included more stories about 'Eretz Yisrael' which is after all the center of Jewish yearning for generations. The work focuses on American- Jewish stories and storytellers, although of course many touch upon Old World experiences. The storytellers themselves come from a variety of walks of life, some being professional storytellers, some well- known Jewish cultural figures and some being ' everyman' . The stories often have a folk quality about them, and are often entertaining, and instructive.
However the stories also point up the difference between stories which are stories in the street, anecdotal stories, and stories which are more complex literary creations. In this I think stories of the folk kind cannot possibly have the kind of aesthetic value that for instance a written story of Bashevis Singer might have.

5 out of 5 stars These are stories to love!.......2005-08-30

It`s an amazing book. After I bought it I couldn`t stop reading until I was through! Amazingly funny, poetic, inspiring and touching stories, from the first one to the last one. Good source - let`s say, a sampler - of Jewish wisdom. The book resides on my bedside table now - in case I need some inspiration for good dreams...

5 out of 5 stars Because we love stories..........2000-02-15

What a joy to read this anthology! In a world where the media is constantly on our nerves with the ever-going show of human misery, to read this set of stories is a therapy. It makes you laugh, it makes you wonder, it brings you closer to God and His creation, it revives a deep-rooted "jewishness" that we seldom are aware off or have simple forgotten. It makes you feel like a child savoring his favorite ice cream: when it is finished, he cries out for more!

5 out of 5 stars Captures Jewish "philosophy of life" if there is one........1997-12-21

It is said that when three Jews have a discussion they will have at least four opinions, so there may not be any such thing as a Jewish outlook on, or philosophy of, life itself. But if there is, Because God Loves Stories captures its flavor. This is a collection of tales, memories, family stories, and anecdotes -- most of them short, and all of them fascinating -- that captures the tension and conflict between demanding the sweetness of the ideal world from God (who should certainly understand it the way WE do) while grudgingly, cynically, and mockingly accepting the frequent bitterness (or at least the tartness) of reality. It is a collection that shows how one can see humans as made in the image of God while still being fallible, troublesome, and even sinful, and that shows Jews loving God while being poignantly aware of the disappointments in much of His work, and letting Him know about it.

I have given copies of this book to my (Jewish) father who is as easily impressed as all Jewish parents -- and he loved it and reads the stories to friends he visits in a Jewish nursing home. They love them. I have also shared the stories with the non-Jews of a library literary discussion group to which I belong, and they have loved them. So, nu, what are you waiting for? Buy the book already. It's not like it costs so much money; the pleasure will be worth the few pennies you spend.

This fascinating, creative, headstrong wonderful woman who refused to take "her place" in life and instead lived her life as best she could- inspired me to no end. May we all be as brave.

4 out of 5 stars A delightful little gem of a book about the creator of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck and Flopsy, Mopsie and Cottontail .......2007-02-13

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) grew up in a cold home during the Edwardian era. Her parents were elderly Unitarians and her brother became an alcoholic. Beatrix retreated to her upstairs bedroom. In that bedroom she began to draw beautiful watercolors in pastel clarity of her little imaginary friends such as Peter Rabbit and his garden friends.
Beatrix was a strong willed person. At the age of 36 her little book on Peter Rabbit was accepted for publication by the firm of F. Warne Co. Though shy Beatrix fell in love with one of the three Warne brothers. She and Norman were planning to be married despite the opposition of her parents. They considered Warne to be in trade and beneath the reclusive spinsterish girl they loved and protected. Tragedy ensued when Norman died.
Beatrix bought Hill Top farm and found love with a local solicitor who like she was interested in preserving England's beautiful landscape. Today her Hill Top farm is owned by the National Trust being open to thousands of tourists.
I hesitated in purchasing this book since it was only a movie-tie-in to the new Renee Zellwegger film. It's author is Richard Maltby who also wrote the film's screenplay. I was charmingly surprised! Maltby has woven this simple and heartwarming story of Miss Potter with charm, wit, pathos and
it is obvious he has a warm spot for Beatrix and her furry friends. "Peter Rabbit" is still the bestselling book for children which has been written in the English language.
If you want to spend a few hours getting to know the complex creative genius Beatrix Potter read this fine little book. A true joy!

4 out of 5 stars For kids?.......2007-01-22

With Renee Zellwegger's charming smile beaming at me from the local book store's children section, I was irresistibly bewitched into purchasing a copy of "Miss Potter The Novel."

After immersing myself in the tale, I was not disappointed, but I was briefly confused. The story seemed to start off a bit slow and stiff. And then I realized why. This book is not actually written for 9-12 year olds. It is, in fact, a short adult novel based on the life of Beatrix Potter, which seems to have mirrored much of the plot of Sense and Sensibility.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the content of the story. We learn how the creative talents needed to produce such whimsical tales as Peter Rabbit manifest themselves, and how a unique outlook on life can affect artists in both positive and negative ways.

Aside from a couple of sentences containing veiled adult content, the book is fine for both children and adults. If you want an excellent read about following your bliss, look no further.

4 out of 5 stars Love and life can be found in Keturah and Lord Death........2007-10-07

Just like the stories that her character Keturah tells, Martine Leavitt tells a beautiful story of love, but most importantly, of life. Through Keturah's experiences with Lord Death, she starts seeing the world through a different set of eyes. It's a beautiful lesson that I think old and young alike can appreciate and learn along with Keturah. The love story and Keturah's passion to find her true love are the driving force throughout the novel and just as in real life; you sometimes find love in the strangest of places. Overall, Ms. Leavitt's words create a beautiful fairy tale that is lovely through its simplicity. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a simple tale of love and life.

4 out of 5 stars An original, if predictable fantasy/romance.......2007-08-06

The writing is superb, the characters are well-developed, and the romance is spellbinding. Keturah and Lord Death is a fantasy book good enough for all but the most discriminating fantasy lover. Additionally, the predictable but heart wrenching conclusion will give readers warm goosebumps. This book is ideal for any middle-school girl.

Sixteen-year-old Keturah Reeve, a beautiful and talented storyteller, lives with her grandmother in a small, poor village just outside an immense forest. She is inspired by her grandparents' loving marriage and is determined to not settle for anything less than her `own true love' to wed. One day, though, she gets lost in the forest. After wandering desperately for three days without food or water, she resigns herself to death. At once, the shadowy figure of Death appears on his night-black stallion. He is young and handsome, but unyielding. However, Keturah is not ready to give up on her dreams of true love, and manages to "cheat death" out of her life. She weaves a wonderful story while Lord Death listens spellbound, but then refuses to tell him the ending. Bemused and annoyed, Lord Death grants her a deal: if, in one day, she can find her true love, she will not die until she is old and ready. If she still cannot find him, Lord Death will pay her another visit and hear the rest of the story. Keturah accepts this reprieve and returns to her village. Helped by her friends Gretta and Beatrice, she overcomes many obstacles (she visits a witch, buys a disturbing magical charm, delivers a baby, bakes a lemon pie, accosts a hermit, plays matchmaker, petitions her lord, and charms the lord's handsome son) all in the name of true love. As she continues on her quest, she learns surprising truths about fate, life, and her own capabilities. The ending of this book is predictable to any reader who has read romance before, but it's sweet and satisfying.

If Keturah and Lord Death were a food, it would be a chocolate éclair- not filling or substantial, but delicious all the same. Small flaws permeate the book; minor characters are overly generalized, the male protagonist is transparent, the plot sometimes meanders, and Keturah is the epitome of the `perfect, generous, lovely, selfless, brave' maiden. It's kind of annoying, especially if you're like me, and you like your heroines to be human. However, the wonderful language and the dark, intense mood of the book make these flaws insignificant. A beautiful, lyrical read.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story.......2007-07-10

I happened to pick up this book as an audio book. The "performer" on the CD, Alyssa Bresnahan, is truly outstanding! She really captured the essence of Keturah and the other characters! I recommend the CD version highly, even though it takes 6.5 hours its well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Keturah and Lord Death.......2007-06-17

Keturah and Lord Death centers around Keturah Reeve, and her story begins the day she follows the hart into the woods and finds herself lost for three days. She then encounters Death in the woods and they make a bargain after she tells him a story that will possibly serve in saving her life. The bargain: if she can find her true love in twenty-four hours, Death will spare her. If not, Death will take her as his bride.

While reading this I was reminded of the story of Persephone and Hades, and also, Shahrazad. Martine Leavitt has a very nice, quick writing style that makes reading on an easy task that isn't regretted. But I did find that some things passed on too quickly. I really believe that if she had lengthened the story and possibly given more depth, it would have been powerful and much more compelling. As it is, Keturah and Lord Death is a very simple read for younger age groups.

I do like that Keturah and Lord Death, original in its own right, feels like a new form of fairy tale, a mix between a Persephone/Hades and a Shahrazad type of story. Keturah is kind and beautiful and your typical maiden, with hardly any flaws. Lord Death is brooding and melancholy, and as expected, lonely. Every other character is very one-sided. They are never really driven in to or explored.

One of the problems I do have with this story, although I did enjoy reading it, was that Keturah tells death the story of her possible true love that she has never met which ends up saving her another day. She basically states that she would live for her one true love and that was her main purpose. Then, she goes off and attempts to force herself to love people when she knows that she doesn't. I thought that this was dwelled on way too much. I just kept wanting her to follow her own words, and I wish Martine Leavitt had given her greater turmoil and possibly more men (I don't really know how to put that) so that her choice, talked of nearly one hundred pages, would not seem so ridiculous. And the ending is very predictable. While I was pleased with it, I wish there had been more surprises. Along with this, I felt that Martine Leavitt shorted herself with her own story. There were so many opportunities to make this something amazing or like an odyssey for Keturah or some kind of journey. (Which it kind of was, but I really think it wasn't, in a way. It was just too simple to be anything so serious.) Basically, after finishing the last page I wished the author had drawn out the story, made Keturah change and grow with every chapter and for her adventure send her to all over the world. Maybe it would have been better if she had a year, and in that time, became completely transformed. Martine Leavitt didn't take her chance, and the book, therefore, was less than it might have been.

Overall: I did enjoy Martine Leavitt's book. It is a very good story for young girls and serves as an original, simple storyline to be read and enjoyed; but I wish so badly that it had turned out to be more than it was.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty and the Beast.......2007-05-20

The Beast in Beauty and the Beast seems like the ultimate reject when it comes to potential boyfriends, but then, who could possibly fall in love with Death? Keturah nearly dies in the forest, and Lord Death only agrees to spare her life temporarily, in a manner reminiscent of Scheherazade's experience in The Arabian Nights. This is a gem of a book for fairy tale enthusiasts. It should also make a refreshing change for teen readers who are tired of predictable books about girls with vampire/werewolf boyfriends. The romance in this story actually makes you think about romance in a new way--which is pretty hard to do these days.

Johnny Cash is one of the most influential figures in music and American popular culture today. While he was an icon to people of all ages during his life, Cash's legacy continues after his death. His remarkable story is captured in this exclusive authorized biography, addressing the whole life of Johnny Cash-not just his unforgettable music but also his relationship with June Carter Cash and his faith in Christ. His authenticity, love for God and family, and unassuming persona are what Steve Turner captures with passion and focus in this inspiring book.

Different from other books written about him, The Man Called CASH brings Cash's faith and love for God into the foreground and tells the story of a man redeemed, without watering-down or sugar-coating. Unquestionably one of the biggest book releases of 2004, The Man Called CASH will be a huge success with his millions of fans and will draw in many new fans with this inspiring story of faith and redemption.

The audio book, ISBN 084996377X, is narrated by Cash's close friend and musical partner, Kris Kristofferson.

The Man Called Cash is a very good book. very informative.I think a child 11-12 years old could read it and beable to understand what they are reading.I think it gose behond some of the other books I have read on Johhny Cash.I would recomend it to any one who is interested in seeing where Johnny Cash were he came from and the legacey he left.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic biography of a true ledgend.......2007-01-11

I am a legally blind man and and I usually get my books to listen to through the library, but after I saw the movie walk the line I felt I had to know more about the ledgend of Cash through an audiobook if I could find one. I was lucky to find this one. I love the way Kris Kristofferson reads the book. Since he was a friend of cash's, he put feeling into the reading like no other person can. Through the author's extensive research on Cash, I found out things I never knew about him. The Movie is good, but if you really want to know who Cash is, just by this and Listen to Kristofferson tell you about his friend. The man in black.

5 out of 5 stars piety and weakness.......2006-08-25

I learned a lot about Johnny Cash, as well as people like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and many others who were the ones that generated so much buzz about music in the 1950's. Toward the end of the book, I was sad because I knew that it would speak of his death. I found myself not wanting to hear about it, because I had loved learning about his life so much.

My favorite story in the whole book was about a prayer he prayed at dinner. His dinner guest recalled the story:

Cash prayed and said, "... and we thank you Lord for this food, and we ask that you would bless it to our body. We pray these things in Jesus' name, Amen. When he finished praying he winked at me and said, "I still miss the drugs though."

It is precisely that juxtaposition of piety and weakness that I think I love about him. It reminds me of another man who is known well for his writing when he said:

I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do ... What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

In case you didn't catch that, the other man to whom I referred is the Apostle Paul. He happened to be one of Cash's favorite people for obvious reasons. I have wondered why I am so enamored by people like Johnny Cash and Paul; these men of such conviction, but at the same time so open about their transgressions. I think it is because they knew themselves well, and they never allowed the good in them to elevate them to a place where they could look down at others. They knew the darkness, and that it was always waiting if they would just relent and turn to it.

Cash turned to it a lot. However, like Paul, he also said:

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

At the end of his life, after June Carter died he hung around for a few months more. He could barely walk, was in massive pain, and was eighty percent blind. In this state, however, he still had the Bible enlarged big enough so he could read it. Others spoke about his love of Jesus, his kindness, his generosity, and his faithfulness to June.

So many want to be cynical about people who struggle, fall, get up, and fall again. They like to point and yell to expose someone else's flaws. I am more convinced that the ones who yell the loudest are the ones who are the most scared of having their flaws exposed.

One of my favorite lines in music comes from a song sung by Cash. It was written by Bono and performed with U2 (yeah, I know big surprise). The line goes:

I went out there,
In search of experience,
To taste and to touch,
And to feel as much,
As a man can,
Before he repents.

Isn't that all of our stories? I know it's mine. I also know that it is mine everyday. I walk around, and like a little kid test the boundaries of God's love. Some days, I may not go far, other days I may feel restless and I just want to run. Yet each time I return home to talk with God I find myself speaking the words of Paul:

Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

5 out of 5 stars Hello, I'm A Johnny Cash Book!.......2006-06-10

I usually don't read many biographies, but I received this one for Christmas one year since I am a huge Johnny Cash fan. I was glad to see that this book was very well written and also a very easy read. I knew it was going to be good when the first chapter was pretty emotional, as it starts off with June Carter Cash dying. The book also focuses well on some key moments in Johnny Cash's life that made the most significant difference - the first being the death of his brother, Jack, and the others that revolved around June. Like other reviewers have stated, Walk The Line used a lot of moments from the book and I would recommend reading the book as well as watching the movie. I think what was great about Johnny Cash, and what we can all relate too, is how open he was with how he was a sinner and how he had made a lot of mistakes (ie. drugs, affairs, etc.), but he changed his ways when he fully committed himself to Jesus and his faith. I think this book can be a great tool to those who have struggled and have difficult pasts because Cash showed that it doesn't matter what you have done, that you have forgiveness and that you can always start over. Great message and this book has a lot of interesting and funny stories that will want to make you laugh, smile, shake your head, or make you feel sad. Steve Turner has done a great job and had made me rethink biographies. If you're a Johnny Cash fan, this a must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Informative and In-Depth! A Good Biography to Start Learning About the Life of Johnny Cash........2006-05-10

Before I read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, by Steve Turner, from 2004, I had also read the 1997 book called CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY (with Patrick Carr). They both cover similar ground. The 1997 book seems more homey, like Johnny Cash is talking to you, but this book, by Steve Turner, seems more accurate.

Having know Johnny and his family for over a decade, author Steve Turner was actually hired to help write another autobiography, but June and Johnny died unexpectedly, and the book turned into an in-depth research research project, instead of just helping Johnny write with decent grammar, or whatever it takes two authors to do with an AUTObiography.

Both books seem to be equally long in content, though the page counts and page sizes differ between the hardcover of this book and the small paperback of THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY book that I read.

Though both books cover a lot of the same incidents from Johnny's life, this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, features some highly interesting coverage of the last living days of June and Johnny, before they both passed on in 2003. There is also plenty of more in-depth coverage of events told in THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and there are also plenty of events from Johnny's life that are not mentioned in the 1997 autobiography. I recommend that you read both books, actually.

The author also points out that since he had to do research, instead of just typing out whatever Johnny told him, he has discovered that Johnny Cash never had trouble telling a good story, or making a good story even better! For example, Johnny Cash has written and talked about how rowdy he was in the Air Force, fighting with the military police, etc., but Steve Turner points out that the people who were in the Air Force with him don't remember any of that kind of rowdiness from Johnny, who never got into much trouble, and would have been widely known on the air base if he HAD fought with the guards, etc. This book also tells about how Johnny would play music with other airmen in his dorm, and Johnny was the worst of the bunch, learning a lot from the others!

There are many interesting b/w photos, although mostly small, but in high quantity! There is a photo of his brother Jack, whose childhood death affected Johnny for the rest of his life.

This book also has a chronology of major events in Johnny's life, and a discography of his primary releases, which is good to use as a shopping list, for me.

This book does have some distracting typos that I hope get fixed in future printings. On one page the same sentence appears twice in a row. In the Chronology, the death of his father, Ray Cash, appears twice on the list, in 1985 (correct), and then again in 1993 (incorrect). This is unfortunate, but these two are the worst distractions that I found without even trying.

It is also interesting to see how the movie WALK THE LINE compares to what is contained in both of these books! For instance, both books say that June Carter never really met or toured with Johnny until he was a big, established star, years into his music career, while the movie gives me the impression that they met on Johnny's first fledgling tour.

THE MAN CALLED CASH gives information about the the saw accident and his brother Jack. This book says that actually there was another 12 year old boy there, who witnessed the event, and Johnny suspected him of being involved in a bad way, though none of the adults thought so at the time, or ever! Both books mention how Johnny would see Jack appear in his dreams for the rest of his life, always a few years older than Johnny at whatever the age Johnny dreamed the appearance.

This book talks about Johnny's friendship with the evangelist, Billy Graham. I personally enjoy Johnny's Gospel albums and projects, but I am a little bit disappointed over the wasted years of drug abuse and family neglect from Johnny, who thought of himself often as a lost Christian, but a Christian none the less. What do you think about that?

The Bible says, "What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice." -- Philippians 1:18. Using this Bible verse as a model, it tells me that Johnny Cash's Gospel works, as good as they are, are also totally legitimate as long as they correctly preach the Word of God--regardless of the depths of sin and abuse that Johnny heaped upon himself and his loved ones.

As long as Jesus Christ is being preached correctly, the sins of the messenger do not negate the message itself (and we are all sinners, just not as extreme as Johnny was, I suspect)! I do not and cannot condone his sinful abuses, (though I have done most of them myself, before I got Saved 8 years ago), but I will let God judge his own servant, and I will continue to enjoy the many beautiful Gospel projects which Johnny Cash was always eager and happy to work on!

GOSPEL GLORY is my favorite Johnny Cash Gospel CD, so far. His movie, THE GOSPEL ROAD, is on DVD and is also really cool! My favorite Gospel project from Johnny Cash is his spoken word reading of the entire NEW TESTAMENT on 16 CDs, very affordably priced from amazon.com, and all three of these items come highly recommended by me!

I can recommend both of these books for anybody who enjoyed the WALK THE LINE film.

Bottom line: read CASH: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY for a fun time spent with Johnny Cash in his own words, then read this book, THE MAN CALLED CASH, for the REAL story on how many of those stories actually went down!

5 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Loretta Young.......2007-04-20

This book is pretty straight forward. Like the title says this is a book about Loretta Youngs life; loves, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Tom Lewis, etc, etc.; and faith one of the mainstays in her life threw all the good and bad times she experienced.

All in all a very good book about Loretta Young. The best part about it is that finally Loretta admitted that Judy Lewis was her biological child with Clark Gable.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-05-24

The book was interesting and I learned more about Loretta Young's life. I agree, it was a bit "candy coated", but I think it explains the "sign of the times" and that is where she was in her life. I think it is great that she had such a strong faith in God and that her religion played a very important part of her life. Her life is a good example for others. In this day and time, we let too much just "hang out there". It would be nice if our world was a little more "reserved".

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2002-01-03

Whilst Loretta Young unquestionably lead an interesting life, you would not know it from this whitewashed, saintly version. This book would have been far better promoted as a commentary on Loretta Young and her relationship with god. Certainly those readers wanting to know about her experiences in Hollywood in the 1930s would be disappointed. Her screen career was largely glossed over - we are talking about a woman who worked with pioneers such as Lon Chaney - you'd barely know it from this book. Similarly, there was little on her relationship with her sisters or any comments of substance about their lives or careers. Even the more 'scandalous' elements of her life were only worth a couple of pages - the rest of the book was more like a conversion exercise. Whilst the religious element was obviously something that influenced who she was as a person, the author did not delve beyond this. It is an injustice if this is the best that can be offered in her memory.

4 out of 5 stars Great recovery.......2001-11-10

She is not like you would have imagined from the TV Show. She had a lot more going on than the glamour that she displayed with her swirling entries each week.
She was not the angel one might think either but she was human and she faced it, or not, within the pages of this book. She sometimes came off as a saint and sometimes as naive but you did not always believe she could be THAT naive. Other times she came of as competent and adult, which, in my book makes her as real as a Hollywood siren can be.

3 out of 5 stars The Gospel According to Loretta.......2001-10-30

This book is written through Ms. Young's eyes and appears to be her somewhat romanticized and (more importantly)spiritualized take on life. She tends to gloss over the tawdry or questionable aspects while dwelling on the spiritual aspects. Having read her daughter Judy's book, I can clearly see that there was a lot of moral conflict in her mind and this book was clearly a good way to absolve herself of most of the negatives in her life. That said, the book is an o.k. read once you begin to differentiate the truth from the romantic fiction.

In Just Ella, Margaret Peterson Haddix puts a spin on the traditional tale of the glass slippers. In her version, Ella (sans "Cinder") finds her own way to the ball (there was no fairy godmother, despite the rumors) and wins the heart of the prince. But now she is finding that life at the palace as Prince Charming's betrothed is not as great as she thought it was going to be. In fact, it's downright boring for a self-reliant and active girl to do needlework all day or listen to instructions on court etiquette from the strict and cold Madame Bisset. Worst of all, Ella is beginning to suspect that Charming's beautiful blue eyes and golden hair are attached to a head with nothing in it. Her young tutor Jed, however, talks with her about serious things that really matter. Ella finally gets up the courage to announce to Charming that she doesn't want to go through with the wedding, but when she finds herself locked in the dungeon she realizes it's not that easy to walk away from a politically arranged marriage. In the end, as in all good fairy tales, our heroine and hero do manage to live happily ever after--but with a twist.

Fairy tale retellings are an entrancing form of young adult fiction, as they add psychological insight and turn events around for a surprising contemporary angle. Teens who enjoy this delightful revamping of an age-old story may also enjoy Donna Jo Napoli's Spinners and Zel or the Newbery Honor book Ella Enchanted, by Gail Levine. Book Description

Being a princess isn't all that....

You've heard the fairytale: a glass slipper, Prince Charming, happily ever after...

Welcome to reality: royal genealogy lessons, needlepoint, acting like "a proper lady," and -- worst of all -- a prince who is not the least bit interesting, and certainly not charming.

As soon-to-be princess Ella deals with her newfound status, she comes to realize she is not "your majesty" material. But breaking off a royal engagement is no easy feat, especially when you're crushing on another boy in the palace.... For Ella to escape, it will take intelligence, determination, and spunk -- and no ladylike behavior allowed.

2 out of 5 stars Blah.......2007-09-17

The Book Reviews made it sound like this would be a fun story about what happens "Happily Ever After." I just couldn't get into it. Everything was so One-Dimensional. I just wanted to get the end to see just how far the author would take the extreme to. I had no desires to re-read the story, just wish I hadn't bought it and only borrowed from a friend or library.

In this story, Ella, has already been to the ball and won the heart of the Prince and now awaits her marriage. She doesn't relate to anything going on around her and decides she doesn't want to marry boring, shallow Prince Charming and that maybe "Love at first sight" isn't really love. Everything is so obvious at what's going on that the book isn't fun to read. At first glance, yeah--Ella isn't happy. Yeah--Ella now thinks her fiancé is a nitwit. Yeah--Ella is attracted to her tutor who's character is actually developed. Yeah--Ella can do anything because she created her own destiny. BORING!

I especially didn't like the ending. I know Ella was happy with her choices, but I hated the idea of the Step-Evils believing that they "won" and didn't end up miserable in their own filth.

5 out of 5 stars A warm, moving story of an almost-princess.......2007-08-07

Soon-to-be princess Ella finds her proposed new life difficult, what with a boring prince, a crush on a non-royalty member of the household, and more. Margaret Peterson Haddix's JUST ELLA provides a warm, moving story of an almost-princess facing many changes and is a fun tale highly recommended for young adult leisure readers.

4 out of 5 stars A Perfect Reality Check For Cinderella.......2007-02-25

This book amazed me! For being the first book I read based on 'what if?'statements, the author knew how to put it together beautifully.

2 out of 5 stars Predictable.......2007-02-08

Probably all of you have heard the story of Cinderella, the girl whose wicked stepmother and stepsisters made her into their personal slave. Then one night she attended ther prince's party and fell madly in love. She disappeared mysteriously but left behind one glass slipper, so the prince was able to track her down and propose to her.

This book deals with the time immediately after that. Cinderella is living in the castle, awaiting her wedding date--so now what? She has to wear uncomfortable clothes and do boring princess stuf like embroidery and lessons on how to act and eat and dress. She has a nightly meeting with the prince, and she begins to realize that he is not wonderful; he is shallow and stupid and not worthy of being married to her. So the problem for Ella is how to break off an engagement to the prince. And if she does, then what will she do with her life?

I generally like reworkings of fairy tales, but I didn't find the character of Ella overly likable. This book was also very predictable. I suppose fairy tales are, too, but I feel like in a reworked fairy tale, there should be a bit more room for surprises.

4 out of 5 stars Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix.......2007-01-25

Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a really good and well writin twist to the clasic story of Cinderella. It tells about a girl's life in the castle with Prince Charming. She thought that she was going to live the best life ever, when she realizes that she is not allowed to do anything. One day she overhears her servents talking about her having a fairy godmother, when she says she doesn't have one and she got to the ball all by herself without any magic. She also realizes that it is really hard to talk to Prince Charming the way she talks to her tutor Jed.

I recomend this book to people who enjoy the classic tale of Cinderella, but are ready to hear it with a little twist.

Book Description

Beckon the sea,

I'll come to thee....

Shed seven tears,

perchance seven years....

At the age of ten, Gwen Cooke had a strange encounter with a boy with dark, slightly tilted eyes. He came to her on the beach, whispered strange words in her ear, and then disappeared. Shortly thereafter, her family moved away from their seaside home and Gwen never saw the boy again.

Now seventeen, Gwen is returning to her childhood home. Her nana asked her to come. But Gwen knows it's time to go back for another reason: She yearns for the sea. Perhaps the sea itself is calling to her. Perhaps the memory of the boy and his haunting words are drawing her back to the place they met. Perhaps it's time for her to face her destiny.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-07-11

I just finished Seven Tears Into The Sea and had to let others know how wonderful this novel is. It is an enchanting story that has left me wanting a sequel. It can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. If you want to lose yourself in a book about the ocean, magic and love, this is worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best books i have EVER read! .......2007-06-06

This was a really, really, really good book! i am a lover of horse books, so i usually dont read a book unless it has something to do with horses, but when i first saw the cover of this wonderful book, i knew it had something special about it. but if you're a fan of Terri Farley's PHANTOM STALLION books, you may/may not like this book. if you are a die-hard lover of books about horses, you probably wont like this book since it has NOTHING to do with horses at all. but if you like a bit of fantasy, romance and myth, you'll just love this book. Both ways, you should really get it. The reason i gave it four out of five stars, though, is becouse it is a bit predictable, like other people said. but you probably wont guess the beautiful ending, though. All in all, it's a great book and you should read it.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2007-02-05

I've never read the 'Phantom Stallions' series, but after reading this, I *definitely* think Farley should end it and start writing more things like *this*. Seven Tears was a lovely description of what happens when reality coincides with myth, and I found it to be much more than just an 'enjoyable read'.

5 out of 5 stars It touched my heart.......2006-08-03

It was so beautifully writtent that I will never look at the sea the same ever agian. It makes you question your own heart and what you would do if you were in Gwen's position. I couldn't put it down since I read the first page.

5 out of 5 stars Love conquers all.......2006-05-20

Seven Tears into the Sea was fantasy and real life mixed together.Gwen Cooke comes to stay with her grandmother over the summer but learns much more than she expected. Mirage Point, where she's staying, is where a mysterious past awaits her arrival. Her fears are replaced with love when she meets a boy from her past who sweeps her off her feet. Who is He? Why has he come back to this place? Seven tears in the sea will tell.It was beautifully written and I hope she writes many more.
