A Quick and Ezcellent Read!.......2007-10-03
I hate that I saw myself, as a parent, portrayed in the Ineffective Action & Soft Limits categories. I started to recognise behaviors in myself that needed addressing and what success! Thank you Dr. MacKenzie from my whole family!
Setting Limits - Saved my relationships with my Kids and Husband!.......2007-09-24
I can't express how important this book has been in our family. I still return to it every now and then - it's great to re-group and re-learn its lessons. This book gave my husband and I the power to deal with our strong-willed child, and even our more compliant child - together, consistently, fairly, and sanely.
Better books out there.......2007-09-13
This book is based on the ideas in Positive Discipline. There is practically nothing new, except the idea that a spirited child will test your limits again and again, so you have to be even more consistent. There! Now that you know that, just get the Positive Discipline, which is excellent. It describes the background of the method, specific approaches, gives you ideas for all ages. "Setting Limits", btw, is much harder to adapt to a toddler. The writing is leaves something to be desired as well.
Best parenting book I've ever read!!.......2007-09-11
Dr. MacKenzie is a God-send! The techniques in this book are helping to complete transform my relationship with my strong-willed 7 year old (who also has ADHD!). After all the years of being worn down by power struggles and tantrums, I feel like a weight has been lifted off my back. This book is well-written, a quick read, and TOTALLY PRACTICAL. If you have a challenging strong-willed child, there is no other book or advice that will help you more. You will QUICKLY begin to have a calm, cooperative, tension-free home!!
Great Book.......2007-09-10
I found this book extremely helpful and full of wisdom. I am so glad a friend recommended it and I have already recommended it to moms who may or may not even have a strong willed child. Great help for parents.

Linda Howard has won many awards for her outstanding romance novels. This book about the Mackenzie family is no exception. It's been said that Zane Mackenzie can make a woman's toes curl, and Linda Howard goes all out to entrap us once again as the dynasty continues.
Maris, as the only Mackenzie daughter, can charm the wildest horse and the sexiest undercover FBI agent who's on the trail of a killer. However, when he lands in her bed, she doesn't remember what happened or how he got there because she has lost her memory.
With wry humor and well-drawn characters, The Mackenzie Family will keep you turning pages until you've reached the end:
"Absolutely not." The words were flat and implacable. "No way in hell." "You have to." He looked down at her with mingled exasperation and amusement. "Sweetheart, you've been the boss for so long that you've forgotten how to take orders. I'm running this show, not you, and you'll damn well do what I tell you to do, when I tell you to do it, or you're going to find yourself handcuffed and gagged and your sweet little ass stuffed in a closet until this is over." Maris batted her long eyelashes at him. "So you think my ass is sweet, huh?"
If you liked Mackenzie's Pleasure or Mackenzie's Magic, you'll leap at the chance to own this book. Even if you have never read anything by Linda Howard, you'll be addicted for sure once you get entangled in her characters' feisty web of love, lust, and humor. --Candy Paape

Sizziling.......2001-03-01
The Mackenzie's family is absoulutely amazing. I have read some of the books about Wolf, Chance and Joe. I can't wait to get my hands on the other ones. These books are a must read. You won't be able to put them down. Linda Howard is the best and far most execellent writer I ever had the privilege to read her work. I only hope they keep coming.
Zane Mackenzie.......2001-01-07
I fell in love with Zane Mackenzie! The way Mrs. Howard kept me spellbound from beginning to end really got me interested in her other books. Of all the Mackenzie books, this one is by far the best. The other about Maris was okay, but it is Zane's story that I can read and reread several times! Thank you Linda Howard for introducing me to Zane! Please keep the Mackenzie books coming!
The McKenzie Family.......2000-03-13
These books will keep you turning the pages just to find out what is going to happen next.I am an avid reader and i was very impatient for the next book to hit the shelves. When it did i could'nt put it down. These books are keepers. I have them all and re-read them, they never fail to capture me all over again. If you want a great read pick up these books. You won't be sorry. Linda Howard is wonderful and her books are great. Happy reading.
Maris was good.......2000-01-07
Mackenzie's magic is the first and only book by Linda Howard which is translated to finnish. absolutely the best scene is about these five Mackenzie's standing there and watching the Maris husband. Then comes Mary and takes care of the situation. And what do these big guys say: Yes ma'am. Like in the old times at school.
After reading Magic in finnish, I read Mackenzie family in english (...and then Kell Sabin, Medina...). Think about Maris. She is got a warrior as a father and as a brother. She can't fall in love with the ordinary guy, so she finds a FBI-agent. Sure The beginning of the book was excellent. "Hi, I am sleeping with an almost naked hunk in some hotel room, I can't remember a thing. We have stolen a horse." Then she notices that the hunk wears boxer underwear, nothing white in cotton. And knows he is a cop. Absolutely hilarious.
Zane and Barrie fall in love in a day. Characters were good and there were enough adventure. Zane is a typical alpha-male warrior who wants to protect his woman and his child. YESSSSS!
can I give them more stars ;-).

common sense.......2007-05-25
This book utilizes common sense when setting limits and disciplining your child. It is full of great examples in implementing the limits.
I am not exhausted at the end of the day anymore.......2007-02-14
I bought this book when I knew there had to be an expert out there who knew better about how to have a happy life without arguing with my kids. My energy was completely liquidated at the end of the day from repeating things, bargaining, arguing and repeating some more and sometimes even giving in. Every time I gave in to my kids, they won and my stomach churned....this had to stop! I was very open for advice, so my attitude made all the difference when reading about how to get my children to behave without yelling, arguing or doing anything that required an energy drain out of me. The results were evident in less than I week (and I hadn't even finished the book by then). The techniques discussed can be applied to all ages and the discretion of the parent is necessary when choosing how to explain things according to the age of your child. I highly recommend this book for a happy family life with no fighting or complaining.
Good, solid book. Full of examples........2006-12-17
I checked this book out from my Library, and have to say I was very pleased with the contents. Nothing mind-blowing here, but reinforces (and reminds) of basics. Provides great examples of situations and how to be consistent with follow through, which I sometimes have an issue with. Really usable. I put it on my wishlist so I could easily reference for all the upcoming issues with the kids!
The one and only book on parenting.......2006-05-06
Great book for Toddlers
The best part of this book is that it doesn't tell you what is and isn't appropriate behavior. Values and customs are set by families as well as by the society we live. The book explains a method that is simply the process to teach those values. The book doesn't tell you what you should or shouldn't be allowing your child to do. Instead, it addresses how to get the message across in a calm and efficient manner, while being direct and respecting the child.
I did not grow up in the type of learning environment explained in this book so I was floored and a little skeptical it could work. But within a month of following the methods I could see a big difference in the relationship I had with my son. I had slipped into spanking and instead of learning my son was being defiant. This book gave us room to allow him to learn proper behavior without feeling threatened.
I do want to note that I am still a proponent of spanking done in the right manner and only at particular times, however this book is adamantly against spanking and doesn't do a very good job at explaining why. Simply saying that children of parents who spanked will always be violent is silly and is disproven thousands of times by all of us who were raised in a generation of spanking and we are not out violently assaulting others.
GREAT BOOK! A must read for EVERY parent.
Note - it is important to follow the ENTIRE plan. Doing so provides the most respect for the process. Doing almost everything but still yelling at the child isn't going to prove useful.
Realistic/usable examples for discipline in today's world........2005-06-13
I got this book when I started having problems with my 4-yr old. He's pretty compliant most of the time, but recently started testing my limits. I was perfectly aware that the problem was with my techniques, not with my child. I just knew that I wasn't getting my message across to him, but didn't know what to do. Reading this book I learned that I was on the right track, but having problems with determining good consequences and following through with them consistently. This book gives very detailed examples of mis-behavior and many ideas for consequences. It also has several "what if" scenarios for those times that the discipline process does not work as expected (which happens to me a lot). This is the book that I will recommend to every parent who gives an inkling of interest in improving their parenting skills.

Good book, but not the only one you need.......2005-10-11
It is a good book; it really explains natural consequences with great detail and senarios. But it's not a system or program, if that is what you are in need of.
This book summed up the course I just took.......2004-01-13
I just took a class in classroom management. The teacher assigned texts in adolescent psychology and development, but relied on the lectures to give us the management portion. This book describes a very similar style of classroom management, giving me a much better tool than the notes I took in class.
.
I especially like the scenarios in the book. In class, we got a lot of information on what was legal, and on extreme situations. This book gives much more detail on how to defuse a developing situation. In addition, the chapters on how to set the classroom management system up at the beginning of the year covered material that our teacher mostly omitted.
.
I will be using this book! I read it through during my winter vacation, when I thought I would be sick of education materials. It was so interesting I found myself reading "just one more chapter" before going to sleep.
A Good Start, But Not A Comprehensive Guide.......2003-05-28
In Setting Limits in the Classroom, MacKenzie does a good job of explaining the importance of setting clear rules with clear consequences. If you would like clarification of what it means to have clear rules and consequences, then this is an excellent book. However, it is important to note that this book barely addresses the needs of secondary teachers. The examples almost exclusively deal with elementary school teachers. For a better treatment of secondary school classroom management, I heavily recommend Discipline in the Secondary Classroom: A Problem-By-Problem Survival Guide by Randall Spirick.

As a teacher who works in an inner city school, how I wish I had read this book eight years ago, when I first began teaching! It would have saved me much grief, frustration, and energy. I have recommended this book to all of my teacher friends and we all agree...it works! If you want real solutions to the real problems that teachers face in today's schools look no further. Mackenzie's system is easy to understand, easy to use, and very effective.

Good start to the day.......2006-11-11
I've been reading one of the meditations a day for roughly 4 months now. Overall, it's a pretty good book.
Sometimes the meditations are more autobiographical than suits my taste. While having a story associated with the concept helps illustrate the point, having that story be the author's sometimes seems a bit self-indulgent. It would have been more enjoyable for me if the author had either invented a situation to illustrate the point, or referred to someone else's story.
This being said, most of the daily thoughts are interesting and thought-provoking. Recent quotes have reminded me to think in various ways about my life: to openly share my experience with someone close to me; to be open to hear my loved one's experience; and, when a situation is not to my liking, to search for a something that is better for me and for others involved.
Overall, I've enjoyed the book.
Daily Meditation and Focus on NonViolent Communication.......2006-08-19
*****
This book is a daily meditation book, laid out with one short essay or meditation for each day of the year. The meditation starts with a quotation about the day's topic. Next comes an essay which ranges from less than one up to two pages for the day's lesson. At the end of the essay is a sentence about how to apply that lesson for the day.
For example, tomorrow, August 19th, has as a quote: "Keep your eye on the sunshine and you will not see the shadows.---Helen Keller", followed by an essay on "Observing without Judgment", and ending with the sentence "Today stick to the facts and don't make up stories about why people behave in certain ways."
There is also a list of NVC feelings and needs in the front and an index.
This is the type of book that people familiar or unfamiliar with NonViolent Communication will enjoy. In fact, it's a great way to learn about NonViolent communication in bite-size pieces, so that it is less overwhelming (especially for people who hate to study or take classes). My husband and I read a little bit each morning and discuss it, finding the focus very useful in starting out our day.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to improve their communication skills.

Recommended for Parents and for All.......2007-08-29
I highly recommend this book (PET) to parents as well as to anyone who has contact with children. I read this book (PET, as well as TET) twenty years ago the very first time. Since then I did not read anything that is better in its category. PET teaches how to relate to and understand children. It also explains how to help their development using a positive and accepting attitude that children need for their emotional and mental growth. It gives many examples and practical advices how to approach children and impact their life in a positive way. I highly reccomend it.
Very Helpful.......2007-08-06
Full of insight, the kind of things I didn't see or realize as a parent because I was right in the middle of the problems. Very practical steps you can use right away, to begin defining and working through the problems in your relationship with your kids. Many of the examples could have been taken from our family. The "Active Listening" chapter was the key for me - it allowed me to finally get my son to open up and talk to me, just by making me a better listener. We'll be using this book for many years to come...my sisters are already asking to borrow it!
Parent Effectiveness Training.......2007-07-03

Blind Attraction, by Myrna Mackenzie.......2006-07-21
SUBJECT: Connor Quinn
FAMILY HISTORY: Wealthy inventor, long-lost sibling to the Extraordinary Five
DEEPEST SECRET: His loss of vision is not his only blindness
Connor Quinn had been born blind and sent as a baby to live at an orphanage, never knowing his true origins as a child of Code Proteus. He'd compensated for his lack of sight with his creativity and brilliance--becoming a renowned inventor. Despite his achievements, Connor had shut himself away, unwilling to risk affection, or the vulnerability it led to. That was before child psychologist Alyssa Fielding challenged him to reveal the man behind the arrogant mask he'd constructed...and discover the siblings he'd never known. An ex-model, Alyssa knew that appearances could be deceiving, and beneath Connor's cool facade lurked a passionate and loving man. Could she teach Connor that the sight that really mattered resided in the heart? (from the back of the book)
I've read 8 out of 12 of the Family Secrets/Extraordinary 5 series. All are well written and the stories mesh remarkably successfully, considering that each is by a different author. You definitely have to suspend disbelief about the overall plot of the series, but the relationships are well realized and you'll care about the characters. All the romances sizzle.
Here is the series in order (c. 2003-2004):
