3 out of 5 stars Slightly Good.......2007-08-12

A good story line with entertaining characters. Just a bit thin on the relationship between Alleyne and Rachel. And, without spoiling the plot, let me just say that their sexual relationship was rather cold.

3 out of 5 stars Balogh's not big on originality within the series..........2007-06-16

Two words: Fake Marriage.

*smacks head* It's not quite a fake betrothal, but it's not all that different. So when I came to the part in this book where Alleyne and Rachel decide to pose as being married, I wanted to smack myself in the head. That makes, what, four or five books so far in this series where there is a a fake relationship? That's pushing it just way too far in my opinion, and it's hopelessly unoriginal. At times there's something to be said for some congruency when writing a series. It binds them together and offers that sort of parallel fate that can be interesting. But this isn't one of those times. When most of the books in a series share an almost exact plot hook, it gets real old real fast.

Aside from that, the thing I liked most in this book was the variety of characters. Most of the others have featured a very homogeneous set of societies best...even with several heroines not being quite up to snuff, they were still proper ladies. So I liked that in this book, four of the supporting cast were "painted ladies". They were boisterous, off-beat, and likable, and just a nice diversion from all the prim propriety of the beau monde. Plus there was Sergeant Strickland to add some more variety. And I like Rachel and Alleyne's romance. They were a sweet couple. The "plot" also worked for me for the most part, aside from the fake marriage bit.

I think if the fake marriage hadn't been part of the story, I would have enjoyed it quite a bit. I still did, but that aspect just annoyed me to death because of it's repetitiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Book.......2007-05-23

The book was wonderful, the continuity of the story held. I had read the others in the series and enjoyed the fact that there were no glaring mistakes. The story showed more of what it is like to be in a war, and a foreign country, and an amusing look at what it might have been like for women who were stronger than normally accepted.

4 out of 5 stars Nice but ..........2007-05-12

"Slightly Sinful" by Mary Balogh is the first book that I by this author, while it was okay this book just seem long and I wanted it to end.

3 out of 5 stars Nice..........2007-05-01

I thought that this book was ok b/c well I don't like what all happens in this book. Yeah there are some great parts but it doesn't have the WOW factor. It isn't all that memorable to me. Out of all the Slightly series this is one os one of my least favorites.

2 out of 5 stars unlikeable hero & heroine, but good dialogue.......2007-09-20

The writing was good, but I didn't like the hero and heroine. Their way of life was probably too true of Ladies and Gentlemen of that time. Fayne, the hero, did not work and did not appear to have any ambition. He spends all of his time hanging out with 3 other men who are also good looking and of similar background, and dueling. They were known as rogues who sleep around, gamble, and spend money buying horses. NONE of them appear to have a real job. They sound like guys that Paris Hilton would hang out with. Their only good quality is that they're loyal friends.
Kilby is rather stupid. Since she was brought up as a lady, you would think she realizes it's not a good idea for a virginal young lady to be alone with any gentleman. But, in her pursuit to dig up the past about her mother, she tries to have private conversations with several old gentlemen discreetly. Both of these old guys sexually harassed her; one had a heart attack (Fayne's Father, no less); and the other one was beaten up by Fayne.

The only thing they had going for each other was pure physical attraction.

The bit near the end about Fayne's Mother's collecting lovers in pairs was just plain weird. I don't see how anyone could keep doing that. Don't people meet lovers by chance? Does she not bother when there's just one person, but go for them only when she meets them 2 at a time?? Must be nice to have so many good looking men jaunting around in pairs looking to share a woman... well, it is fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A Historical Romance you will fall in love with.......2007-09-19

Lady Kilby Fitchwolf escapes the hands of her perverse brother with the help of an old family friend not a moment too soon. The only problem is her sister Gypsy is still in Archer's care in assurances that Kilby will return home. Kilby and the Viscountess are determined to find a suitable husband for Kilby by the end of the season in hopes of securing her and her sisters freedom from Archer's clutches.

From the moment Fayne laid eyes on his fathers much too young mistress he knew he wanted her for himself. She may have been the last person to see his father alive, but he would make the little wolf his. The night he saved her from being taken against her will, he took something much more valuable from her. She was telling the truth after all, she was not the previous Duke of Solitea's mistress.

Kilby did not know when it happened but she fell deeply in love with the new Duke of Solitea, maybe it was their first kiss, or when Fayne saved her from the dishonorable intentions of her brother. She refused the Dukes proposal twice because she had a haunted past of her own in which she must find the answers to. Only she was asking the wrong question all along, the Viscountess was much more valuable to Kilby than she would have ever known.

When Fayne skirts Kilby off to Gretna Green, the couple thinks they will be free from all the distress of Kilby's brother. That is until someone tries to drown Kilby while she is bathing. Who could perform such a dastardly act? The answer will shock you!

This Historical Romance, Sinful Between The Sheets is the second novel in Barbara Pierce's outstanding series. The characters and storyline are so strong this could be wonderful stand-alone book. I on the other hand want to read each and every novel in the series. I loved the way Ms. Pierce kept me enthralled from the very beginning. From the Prologue I was hooked. I did not want to put this book down; I even took it to the bedroom reading late into the night.

Ms. Pierce has a knack for compiling action, suspense and romance together to form a mind-blowing and addictive read. I am sure we will be hearing much more from this fabulous author in the future. 5 Hearts!!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful new author for me.......2007-08-19

Just finished it, see I need to back track and get the first. I intended to put it aside until I did, but I made the mistake of reading the first page, then first chapter...then the book. Oh, well, good intentions go astray.

What a wonderful writer. I just loved Fayne. Such a complex and very real character. Cannot wait for more by this author.

5 out of 5 stars delightful sequel!.......2007-08-18

Wow!!! "Wicked Under The Covers" was Fayre Carlisle's book. This is the sequel, "Sinful Between the Sheets" and is Fayne's story. I must admit, I had trouble with Fayre and Fayne's name (MY PROBLEM, my eyes were very tired from writing for 18 hours and I need my prescription updated...lol). The R and N kept looking the same to me. Once I had my focus sorted out, I sat back and enjoyed another wonderful book by Pierce. I really love her writing, her style, her sensuality. A few Regency people grump because it's not a TRAD, but I and not a hardcore Regency maven, so I just absolutely enjoy the books Pierce has done in the series. I think I liked this more than WUTC.

Fayne, the new Duke of Solitea, is out for revenge. (I love a man on a mission! lol). He is going after Lady Kilby Fitchwolf, a woman supposedly his father's mistress. Only, problems arise, hum, no pun intended, when Fayne begins to fall for the woman he thinks ruined his family.

Kilby was "ruined" too, when the old Duke (Fayne's father died in her bedroom). Kilby swore her innocence, but Fayne won't buy it. However, she has a lot of more important things going on in her life than a vexing man. Brothers, dark secrets, her parents mysterious death, a troublesome brother, and evil doers with plan on using Kilby. A pesky, sexy Duke is just the thing to take her mind off her problems in her down time!

She is off to find out all the truths, with Fayne hot--more ways than one--on her trail. Romantic Times gave it 4 1/2 stars with good reason. It's just a delight from start to finish.

Pierce is a very sexy writer, giving you real characters that come alive under her talent. VERY sensual, with a solid plot outside the bed that kept me turning pages non-stop to the very end.

Pierce is on my auto-buy, and I look forward to more from this wonderful writer.

5 out of 5 stars a new writer for me.......2007-08-17

This is a sequel (which I missed) but have now ordered. I enjoyed this Regency, with a a bit of suspense tossed in, really is one of the first Regency I have enjoyed in some time. The style is fresh, sexy and just the right book to curl up on lazy summer evening. She has a good understanding of woman's limited rights, provides the Alpha male that learns there is more to life through love. Pierce is a steamy writer that clearly is making her mark.

I look forward to more in this series.

Book Description

From New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Enoch comes this exciting and exotic tale of intrigue and seduction, featuring the popular Griffin family.

Lord Charlemagne "Shay" Griffin, second son of the highly–respected Griffin family, excels at everything he puts his mind to, especially when it comes to business. Which is why he never expected the beautiful and seemingly naive young woman he flirted at a ball to best him at a business transaction the very next day!

Lady Sarala Carlisle sees herself as an equal to any man, and she just couldn't resist the chance to put the arrogant Lord Griffin in his place. But Shay is not one to admit defeat. He launches a plan of seduction against Sarala, determined to regain the upper hand. But it is soon clear that the more time Shay and Sarala spend together, the more it becomes about pleasure, not business.

Faced with the Griffin family's scrutiny, society's disapproval, and a potential international crisis, can Shay and Sarala overcome these obstacles and put their competitive natures aside, in order to lay claim to the biggest prize of all?

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Chick-lit rejoices, doormat heroes are "in".......2007-09-12

The abysmally congested realm of historical romance repackages and refurbishes so many of the hackneyed stories and trite hero characterizations, you really begin to appreciate authors like Madeline Hunter, Elizabeth Hoyt and Laura Kinsale. Most historical-romance heroes just blur together and the interaction between the hero and heroine constitutes a new version of the same'ole package we've seen umpteen times before. The hero makes all the moves sensually, ably servicing the heroine, while enduring her verbal onslaught at his expense otherwise. A "quick-witted" (romance translation = imprecating, insulting towards the hero) near-virgin heroine is nothing new. That way, the heroine wins both games: the hero conveniently laughs and enjoys the heroine's insults getting her way as a show of "wit," and has her passion adequately serviced by the experienced hero in the love scenes. It's always the arrogant hero that needs to be taught a lesson. SOMETHING SINFUL offers absolutely nothing new from all these true and tried historical-romance formulas.

The prose is horrible, the settings are absent, characters from past novels are too much in evidence, a doormat hero Shay is the romance genre's delight, the "romance" between the lead pair overwhelmingly one-sided, the love scenes (two, after 270 pages) are awful, the ending contrives, and the overall plotting/pacing is terribly dull. Bad? You bet.

SOMETHING SINFUL is anything but, and describes a tamely mundane affair. Aside from the plot with the silks which drags and lasts the entire book, we have an interminable succession of soirees, balls, recitals, luncheons, and plays. Nothing happens, and I mean nothing. The plot dealing with the silks congeals and chokes in the midst of a barrage of ton events. The plot dealing with the "romance" stifles at kisses for over 270 pages! Seriously, the book is just bad in most ways -- plotting, pacing, prose, settings, characterizations, and fun factor. I don't read to wait over 300 pages for something to happen! Not to mention the blatant one-sided giving and showering in the "romance" from the hero to the heroine. You've heard of the doormat heroine, right? Well Suzanne Enoch crafts the quintessential doormat hero in chick-lit, there's no equal ground here. I wanted Shay to find someone who would appreciate him more, which would have been just about anyone else. I'd love to see Sarala cheating him on after they marry so he'd have grounds for divorce.

My first Suzanne Enoch book, and right of the bat, the book flounders horribly. I tend tune out a novel when characters from prior novels (Zachary, Eleanor in this case) or characters for future novels (the Duke, Sebastian) overshadow this story and its characters. Now I haven't read other Enoch books and I'm just guessing here. SOMETHING SINFUL's ending represents the 3rd or 4th novel I've read which has its protagonist(s) concoct a peaceful resolution with the villain only to have the villain return later to terrorize some more. Why do romance novelists persist with this idiotic plot device? Just makes the protagonists look dumber than they already are. And the end is convoluted, the harder the book tries to make it look fun, the more it seems contrived and convoluted.

Alas, the hero's pathetically sensual response to the heroine's insulting imprecations isn't anything new. It is, in fact, romance's way to keep the heroine on top -- in every that matters. What's funny is our heroine Sarala bends over backwards at everything her mother forces upon her: a new English name (Sarah), English gowns, etc. Yet, she won't accept Shay's offer for the silks. Shay supports her preferred birth name Sarala in front of Sarala's mother but this kind gesture isn't even in the least reciprocated as Sarala continues her barrage of imprecations and cold demeanor with Shay. Of course, Shay enjoys bearing the brunt of her superior, snide attitude. All the Griffin men in SOMETHING SINFUL make self-deprecating jokes for their wives' delight. Teasing the women - about anything - is just taboo. Suzanne Enoch's heroines must be put on a pedestal while the men ground to dirt, right?

Sarala in fact lives for showing up Shay. Talking with her father once, Sarala dreams of pilfering Shay dry of all his wealth ("taking every guinea he owns"). Like the disingenuous way she made off with the silks in the beginning? To what end? Why do you live for debasing him, don't you want him to do well? At the end, she wants him to pine and grovel before she accepts marriage. Despite the fact that he's already groveled and pined endlessly by this point. But alas, she wants to hear the word "love," and it's a competition to make him debased first. He's already bestowed compassion, gifts, tenderness and caring on her, and she wants him groveling more. Yep, termagant of a heroine and a doormat hero here. Then again, I guess that's chick-lit at its best.

I thought love was more about giving, so why is it ok for the heroine to take-and-take at every turn? Shay and his family give everything to Sarala while Sarala continues to insult Shay and dream of impoverishing him. I swear, Sarala doesn't deserve Shay or any Griffin generosity for that matter. Because at this point, she's just being a royal B and of course the chick-lit that this is, Enoch lets her get away with it.

I also thought Sarala's agreement to sell the silks to Shay after she learned they were stolen property was horribly underhanded. She profits off Shay, and since his family has the money, and since her family needs funds, she really doesn't have any qualms about it. When Sarala and Shay are "trapped" to marry, Sarala frets she doesn't want him to be trapped into marriage. She thinks (and I quote): "she and [Shay] both preferred to deal honestly." What a bunch of crap, she prevaricates from the get-go with Shay posing as an ignorant innocent to extract information from Shay. Then, Sarala actually sells silks to Shay for 4 thousand; silks she knows are stolen, and silks she knows Shay will have to return to the Chinese emperor without any sort of sale. She doesn't think about that? And she's talking about dealing honorably?! If Sarala were serious about honor, she would reveal her "secret" from her past to Shay (immediately) when she learns of his intent to follow through on the marriage instead of "showing" him much later. A secret about her lack of virginity which becomes obvious from its first abstract reference. At another ball, Sarala baits Shay into showering her with more compliments by telling him there's something wrong with her and that she didn't grow up English (even though Shay just finished voicing his admiration of her and lauding her uniqueness). If shere were honest about telling him the truth about her lack of virginity, why the duplicitous approach to garner more praise and then later just seducing him? Just so you can hear more tender drivel about you? Even that's all he's done the whole novel? What a bunch of hypocritical crock. Love? There's no giving from her end, it's all take-take-take.

Let's examine how badly one-sided this is, shall we? (the giving entirely from hero to heroine)

* Shay compliments her shrewd business perspicacity and more than once tells her he admires her. In return for his admiration and respect, Shay meekly accepts her insults.
* Shay bestows Sarala with ruby necklace worth a lot more than the silks she deviously heisted.
* Shay's brother Zachary rents some land from Sarala's father which helps her family postpone creditors for weeks
* Shay's prestigious family (the popular "in" crowd) invites Sarala and her family to join them at every ton event. In essence, elevating Sarala's family's status tremendously and helping their image amongst the peerage. Sarala goes from an empty dance card to having all eyes on her at every event simply by association with the Griffins.
* Shay pays Sarala and her family four thousand for stolen silks, a fact Sarala is aware of and has no qualms about collecting.
* Shay makes it a point to call his heroine her preferred name Sarala in front of her mother instead of Sarah.
* Shay defends Sarala from Melbrouke's most remote denigration... constantly.
* Shay gives Sarala a Roman coin, an antique coin from a time period Sarala cherishes.
* Shay invites Sarala to share her past in India even though he has no prior interest for the region. He asks simply because he genuinely wants to know about her. Sure, Sarala asks Shay about antiques and Roman history, but that's because she already harbors a prior interest in such things. Sarala simply doesn't return Shay's genuine interest.
* Shay remembers everything about Sarala.
* Shay's thoughts and words shower Sarala with tender words of love and caring about how unique she is, how he enjoys her "wit" (basically insults and imprecations), how much he loves her business sense, how he hopes she'll be fond of him as much as he is of her, etc., etc., etc. Shay tells Sarala how much loves her green eyes, brilliant mind, breathtaking smile, unique character. Shay tells his older brother Melbourne how much he loves her peculiar differences, and how all those things make her unique to him (her accent, her tan skin, her childhood in India, her business acuity). Both in his thoughts and words, Shay's pining far overshadows Sarala's. And it's Sarala who demands why he wants to marry her. As though she needs him crawling on hands and knees to beg her to accept. It isn't Shay who hesitates to marry, it's Sarala. I understand her past (lack of virginity), but she's just cold and a B with a capital B.
* Even after all this, it's of course Shay tenderly mouthing I-Love-You first. I haven't seen such of a pathetic, debased display of a doormat hero in quite some time.
* Shay is also an interior re-decorator! He refurnishes his town home's furniture with bright colors the way
* Shay desperately worries about Sarala's security after he discovers the silks could endanger its owner.
* Shay goes down on her their first time servicing her desires because he really want to.
* Shay's family must compensate Sarala's family monetarily for "ruining" her in public even though she wasn't a virgin to begin with. Even though she attempts to stop marriage, she goes along with the monetary compensation.

4 out of 5 stars Pride and Propriety meet Irresistible Passion.......2007-08-09

A reversal of the Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice, a haughty aristocratic widower meets an exotic "princess," the daughter of a self proclaimed king of a South American country. Of course the father is actually an Irish soldier who perpetrates an outrageous deception on the the King of England and all of British aristocracy in order to amass a fortune by fraud. As a scheme goes forward to send settlers to his "country," actually a tractless wilderness on the Mosquito Coast, a young woman who never meant to fall in love, and the stiff and prideful aristocrat of high station find that true love sets up a kingdom with rules of its own. There they find that neither the demands of propriety, the facts of social inequality, nor even fateful excesses of greed can disrupt the happiness of two people who have finally found their own true mates.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2007-07-23

After reading the trainwreck of Sebastian's story, I needed to comment on this book!

This story was wonderfully written, and I just loved that there was mention of another country (India) and the British response to it. When Sarala speaks about her home, I thought it was wonderfully written and like Shay I felt as if I could imagine it as well (images on India in a Regency! I love it!)

I also liked that Sarala's wit and intelligence was a perfect complement to Shay's character. Good job Ms. Enoch! Sebastian's part was wonderfully well written as well..he was aloof and suspicious of Sarala but without being a total jerk, and it certainly heightened my desire to read his story.

(My thoughts on that is in another review!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2007-02-24

Once again Suzanne Enouch dazzles!

The Griffin Family strikes again! Sarala is a terrific character -- independent and strong. And Shay is a charming rake -- like all of Enoch's heros, he is sexy and roguish. The story is fast and exciting and never falters.

This is one not to be missed!

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of a different type of love story........2006-12-17

I say this is different becuz the two characters not only spar in love but also in business. It was very unusual back then for women to have any business sense let alone be a worthy opponent and Sarala was for Shay. Raised in India Sarala was also more exotic and not conventional in many ways and I think that was the appeal for Shay. They were well matched. One of the more interesting aspects of the story was the very complicated ending to the "family perdicament" Truly I had no idea how this was all going to be resolved and it was very well done. It was great so see Shay's whole family rally around both he and Sarala with support. This book was a great compliment to the series.

Book Description

Award-winning author Jillian Hunter pens another deliciously sexy tale of passionate romance and beguiling trickery.

At a glamorous soiree in the romantic English countryside, Lord Devon Boscastle, one of the most elusive bachelors in London, is on the prowl for a willing and wicked lady to share a night of all-consuming sin. So he’s delighted to accept a mysterious invitation for a midnight rendezvous.

Miss Jocelyn Lydbury, a demure young debutante, has her heart set on a marriage proposal from a certain respectable gentleman. Invited to a secret tryst at the stroke of twelve, she hopes to finally meet her longtime admirer. To her dismay, it is the heartbreaking Devon who lies in wait for his midnight lady. Before the pair can unmask their deceiver, they are caught in a passionate, if unplanned, embrace and forced into marriage. Although Devon claims he won’t change his roguish ways for anyone, upon returning to London he is surprised to find that his once-timid bride has become an alluring temptress. But little does he know that Jocelyn has vowed to tame her handsome rake–in the ballroom and in the bedchamber.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book! - # 5 of the series .......2007-06-19

I finished this book in one day! Devon and Jocelyn has a history and when they find themselves at the same house party chaos explodes. I don't want to give to much away but this story has lots of lies but Devon and Jocelyn have a mature response the lies swarming around them.... Check out the whole Boscastle Family series;1. The Seduction of an English Scoundrel (2005)2. The Love Affair of an English Lord (2005)3. The Wedding Night of an English Rogue (2005)4. The Wicked Games of a Gentleman (2006)5. The Sinful Nights of a Nobleman (2006)6. The Devilish Pleasures of a Duke (2007)

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-03-23

I did not expect to like this book. Even though I bought it. I'm the type of person who has to read the complete series, so I ordered it, read the back then decided I didn't want to read it. It sat on my TBR pile for about 2-3 weeks. Finally, after finishing a contemporary series I decided to return to Regency times.

I liked it! It was a very nice addition to the Boscastles, who aren't always the nicest protagonists. It is both fun and funny.

I've never really liked Devon in the other books, and didn't think he would make an engaging hero, but he does. It helps that he is immediately attracted to Jocelyn. He took his commitment to her seriously, once he'd accidently compromised her.

1 out of 5 stars Simply don't like this book!.......2007-03-18

I have to agree with practically everyone here. I do not "hate" this book, however, I never felt so disconnected over a romance novel. I thought maybe it is just me - I mean, I work full-time with a husband and kids, therefore, I thought maybe I'm just too exhausted to read. It took a full 9 days to finish the book & each time I struggled to stay awake even in the middle of the day! The entire story is like watching an episode of "Seinfeld" about a story of "nothing." Don't get me wrong, I liked Seinfield, however, one expects more in a romance novel. Devon & Jocelyn are flat & without chemistry at all. The sex scenes are actually average in a romance novel; however, they are slightly graphic, more in line with Stephanie Laurens minus the sensuality. I just couldn't grasp with most of the characters in the story. For instance, Jocelyn's harsh/abusive father & older brother are at the beginning of the story & yet they disappear right before her wedding without further explanation. Another thing, Devon's siblings "sort of" just shows up in any event that he might be in or in a party without (again) an explanation or introduction to why they were there in the first place or how they even got there in the first place. So much so that I had to go back & "re-read" the previous pages/chapters because I was feeling confused or that maybe I miss something. It sort of gives you a feeling of "huh, where did that came from!" Am I making sense at all? The problem now is that I bought most of this author's books (older stories) and just the thought of spending another 9 days to get through to each one. Yuck!

4 out of 5 stars I thought it was good........2007-01-21

This was a good, fast paced novel. I agree more could have been done with it (there could have been more conflict between the characters, arguments were a bit weak and I wondered what happened to Jocelyn's father), still was a fun read. Somebody said it had lots of sex. It really didn't, just had the average amount that any romance has. Wonder when Gabriel's story will be written, I like him.

3 out of 5 stars Ho hum not quite what the others were........2006-12-03

I did not dislike this book, however compared to the others it was as I said ho hum. First of all Devon just is not edgey enough for me - not quite that compelling. He seems a little frivolous and there is no depth. Jocelyn is little bit better, you feel that she is falling for Devon after they have to marry. But things that might have been explored were just dropped. What about the odd relationship with her brother and harsh father. Where did they go after appearing in the beginning at the party then they vanish. No resolution to that. and the whole mystery was not developed at all. Why was there so much hate for Devon it was just not explained. There was no way you could tell who the demon was, and then he was just there. and Devon's reaction was so violent toward him. There have been plenty of assults against women in other books that were not delt with so severely - seemed too much. So the love story was just ok. I would recommend it becuz one should always read all the books in a series. But it will not be quite what the others were, and that is a little bit disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Exhilaratingly Romantic and Adventuresome!.......2007-04-22

I have read a great number of Susan Johnson's creations, but "Sinful" is by far the best! The story takes the reader on a fantastical journey from England to Greece and then to the far-reaching, mysterious and dangerous African coast! Not only is "Sinful" wonderfully sensual and erotic, it's also historically correct and keeps you hooked with suspense that no one could turn away from! I loved it, hence the 5 stars! I recommend it to any historical romance lover, although her love scenes are not for the faint or prudish of heart! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-10-28

This is my all time favorite romance novel of all time.

If you have an open mind and heart you will love it!

3 out of 5 stars Kind of Dissapointing **SPOILERS***.......2006-06-20

I liked some of her previous work but this one was just irritating sometimes. She delves into this whole jealousy thing between Cassandra and Vivian againts Chelsea and they infact BET on the likelyhood of the marriage failing and then you hear nothing about them again. He is so used to having sex ALL of the time and then all of a sudden he stops because he is so enamored with Chelsea after she loses thier baby. I mean he slept with her on numerous occasions, left and forgot about her, went back to his mistress(es), and doesn't see her again until he is kidnapped and forced to marry her becuase of the pregnancy! I just thought some of the characters could have been more developed and I wished Chelsea had more of a spine to walk out on him for good rather than just politely ask him about Cassandra. It was just an okay book with alot of stuff that could have been more developed and alot of stuff that could have been left out. The guy she was supposed to get engaged to is just invented to be an irritant throughout the story.

2 out of 5 stars Sinfully bad.......2005-02-15

I bought this book expecting a great read. The cover at least made it sound good. The first part was promising too! Then it got wierd. Once Sinjun and Chelsea had a falling out, he turned so cold that I stopped liking him at all. I agree with the 1st reviewer too, the bad part went on far too long.

Then suddenly there is all of this kidnapping/harem/blind stud/exhibitionsitic/misogynistict stuff that completely disrupts the flow of the book. She begins introducing new characters quickly in the last 50 pages and it becomes some wierd history piece about fueding impotent Arabs etc. As a "Regency" reader, I totally lost interest at this part as it turned into an action/adventure bodice ripper.

The author seems to lose her track somewhere along the way and lost me as well.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book.......2005-02-02

I did not like characters in this book. Sinjun was a sleazy himbo and the whole harem thing did not work for me. The plot of the book has many faults. For example, Sinjun is captured by her family and escapes, but they never come after him or the daughter. Why? It makes no sense. Another character makes threats on Chealsea, but there is no intense conflict which would have been developed. The book has footnotes in it, which I find annoying. This is not a college project to write a book. Any historical comments need to be in the story and not footnotes. If I want english history, I'll buy english history - not a romance novel.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Everyones a sinner at some time...........2007-09-08

Forgiveness is hard to do when the tables are stacked in front of you, but these characters realize that everyone needs to forgive and at sometime in your life you have to be forgiven along with forgiving others. Chandelle has it all, what most women dream of, a hardworking, ready to please Man, but you never know how good you have it until you are about to loose it all or have lost it. Dior is a trip and a trifling cousin, her jealous goes too far and her lies and deceit put those she loves in compromising and also dangerous situations. Marvin is a good man that some bad things happen to him, his reaction to situations, land him in hot water and even though he is victimized, he also could have presented some of his anguish by handling things differently...he could have admitted his fears and concerns, been upfront and honest. Dooney a great balance character and I look forward to seeing Dooney and Tony along with Grace and her husband in more stories to come, Dior has a real story of her own to tell with Kelvin intricately involved. Kim is prominent figure in this story also and I would like to see more of her. You have some jealousy, lying, fabricating, misunderstanding, spoiling, true friendship, honor, blessings and much more in this story. You find out that what you do is not the first time for it to have been done. You have a history of events and reactions playing out in this fast paced page turner. I think that Victor McGlothin has done a tremendous job here and showing how Christianity plays a role is reality. Thank you for a job well done on writing this novel.

5 out of 5 stars How low can you go? by "SOTRE".......2007-08-04

Victor McGlothin has developed a wonderful story in "Sinful". The character development was great. He developed some truly believeable characters and the story flowed well. Dior took the true meaning of family and friends and tossed it out the window. She was a manipulative trifling woman who turned her back on her cousin who had always been there for her through tough times. Dior let jealousy and greed drive her into trying to ruin her cousin's marriage. I also enjoyed the strong African American men in this novel. They were hard working family men that stuck with their families and were very positive role models.
The author has an excellant talent for the written word. Keep doing your thing. I highly reccommend this book it is truly full of 'drama'. I look forward to your next book.

5 out of 5 stars Can betrayal by a family member be forgiven?.......2007-08-03

Mr. McGlothin, thanks for the positive portrayals of African American males who come from all walks of life, who are successful, street savvy, intelligent, and most of all truly dedicated men who know how to love their wives unconditionally and attend church services.
Although, this story is filled with plenty of drama caused by women, who are jealous, greedy and selfish; the author also portrays African American women who are successful, have high moral values and a sense of sisterhood.
All of the characters in this story are very well developed and realistic to the point that everyone will be able to relate to the "wow is me, drama queen ,Dior". Who is jealous of her best friend and first cousin Chandelle, who on the other hand can create enough theatrics of her own to keep the drama flowing because of her attitude about material possessions," always wanting more than she can afford and always shopping because she never seems to have enough".
This story takes off into high gear with Dior plotting and scheming to destroy Chandelle and Marvin's marriage by being just plain "Sinful"; you may say this sounds ridiculous, but people are very gullible when it comes to "their family" telling them something pertaining to their mates being unfaithful, especially when jealousy is a key factor in helping to destroy all types of relationships-marriages, businesses, partnerships, and friendships.
Although Chandelle is married to a very faithful, loving, hard-working and devoted husband (Marvin),her upbringing and past family history let her be easily drawn into Dior's deceitful plot which, she helps by adding the necessary fuel to the fire to keep the relationship between her and her husband sweltering. Every-time things start to simmer down, here comes Ms. Dior who is so insecure in her own life that she has to continually toss matches on the flame that is burning to destroy her, "favorite cousin, best-friend's" happy life.
Dior's twin brother Dooney, who has had some problems in his past, is the family member who can check both Chandelle and Dior. He adds strength to the book by being a street savvy person who has the exceptional skill of using discernment when it came to finding out the "truth" and presenting it regardless of the outcome, since his ultimate goal is to keep the family together by any means necessary!
Even-though this storyline is filled with plenty of drama, there are a lot of redeeming characters who help set things right, such as Kim who is a sister who has it together in the real estate business, Grace and her husband, Wallace who always had Chandelle and Marvin's back, also Dave, Marvin's God-father who listened to him but gave him real life scenarios to help him find his way back to his wife.
This is a must read for people who like a whole lot of drama, but also like to know that all things are possible through redemption!

5 out of 5 stars Sistahs On The Reading Edge ** Summer Sizzle**.......2007-08-03

Victor McGlothin has done it again with a faced pace story about family members and their values or lack there of. This story takes us into the lives of first cousins who are each others support system through the good and bad. It also knocks at the door of letting ones personal wants and desires get in the way of building a loving relationship based on love and trust and not material things. But like momma and daddy always warned you be careful who you allow into your personal life be it family or not because there are always individuals that carry around venom who are bound to strike out and bite someone. Everyone has family members that share the same characteristics of the characters in this book and thats what makes the story believable.

4 out of 5 stars "SINFUL" .......2007-08-01

I really enjoyed reading "Sinful". It made me think back and view my friendships; put myself in Chandelle's place and decide if I could be Christ like if I was in the same situation and do the right thing. Victor did a good job writing this and I am waiting for the next book to be published.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Cute intro into the "Simply" series.......2006-08-25

Kane McDermott is an undercover detective who finds himself with the petty task of investigating Kayla's etiquette school for businessmen. It appears that it may actually be a house of ill repute. The attraction between the two is sizzling. Just when he determines that she may be innocent, evidence stacks against her and danger lurks around the corner. In order to protect her, he will have to come clean, which could destroy the fragile relationship.

Phillips breezy story has great tension and her usual heated sensuality featuring incredible chemistry between the protagonists that'll keep the reader glued to the pages of this romance with light suspense. It is the best of the trilogy which also includes "Simply Scandalous" featuring her sister Cat and "Simply Sensuous."

2 out of 5 stars Simply Crappy. A very poorly written book........2006-05-16

I am an avid reader of all genre's including romance. This is by far the worst book I've read in a long time. The author tells, not shows, what is going on and has long bouts of meaningless and endlessly repeating thoughts between the dialog. A few times I had to go back a couple pages to remember what the previous character had said.

The plot might be okay if it were executed well. It wasn't. There are a lot of fun easy reads out there. Books like this is what gets the Romance genre laughed at.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Entertaining.......2006-01-14

Every since I first read "The Playboy" I have been an avid Carly Phillips fan. So I had to read the Simply Series. Simply Sinful, although definitely not her best work, is a fun and entertaining read. The relationship between Kane and Kayla is sexy and kind of taboo, which just makes it even more fun.

Although, the tortured hero was a little over the top for me, especially how he would be so convinced things wouldn't work out one minute and then be madly in love the next. For some reason I also was not a big fan of Captain Reid, even though he was supposed to be a likable character. I just found him to be kind of annoying, luckily he is mentioned by other characters more than he actually appears in the book.

I loved Kayla's sister Catherine, every scene between Kane and Cat made me smile. She acts just how a good sister should. I'm halfway through Catherine's book "Simply Scandalous" and am loving it even more than this one. If you are a romance book fan, especially if you are a Carly Phillips fan, then "Simply Sinful" is definitely for you.

4 out of 5 stars "Are you going to Lucky Detective?".......2006-01-05

Simply Sinful by Carly Phillips is clever quick read. Detective Kane McDermott is assigned to find out if Kayla Luck is running an escort service. Kayla Luck is a sweet trusting woman who decides to make Kane her first one nightstand. Everything goes wrong and Kane ends up moving in with Kayla to `protect her' from the bad guys. The next story of the series is 'Simply Scandalous' tells the story of Kayla's little sister Catherine.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh........2005-10-11

If you love romance novels of all kinds, sure, maybe try this author. If you are not such a big fan, but want something that's modern, sexy, and funny--steer clear.
I was in the mood for a romance novel, so I grabbed this at the grocery store, and gave it away when I was halfway through (though I skimmed through to the end). The plot is often implausible and wrought with cliche. The dialogue is unbelievable and crap--for example, the hero keeps calling the bombshell by out-of-style and often derogatory nicknames, like "doll," sometimes several times within a couple pages. And that's still when he barely knows her The author constantly describes what people are wearing, in careful detail, which is just plain stupid and boring. Finally, the heroine is more than a bit pathetic.
I think it's cliche and bad writing, and I don't know how this woman keeps getting published. Maybe because of people like me who innocently buy her novels.

4 out of 5 stars Sensual Summer Read........2006-07-29

Deborah Raleigh captivates historical romance readers in this second of the "Some Like It..." series with the handsome and dangerous Rutherford Hawksley and the spirited, beautiful, and intelligent Clara Dawson. Clara, left alone after her father's death finds comfort in a pen pal mathmatical equation relationship with a certain Mr. Chesterfield, not knowing that this relationship is to bring her danger and into the arms of the wickedly handsome Hawksley. She doesn't stand a chance with this tall, dark, handsome stranger the moment she looks into his dark blue eyes. But neither does Hawksley, as the beautiful Clara, as beautiful inside as out, rescues him from a life of loneliness and abuse from his aristocratic upbringing. They are drawn to each other from the moment Hawksley saves her from attempted murder and together they work to solve the murder of his older brother. Biddles and Anna are back from the first book, and the sexy Santos. As a fan of the sensual historical romance, this book did not disappoint. It is sinfully delicious, but I was left wanting more, which is why I give it 4 Stars. It would have been wonderful to complete the story and the relationship after Clara and Hawksley's marriage and their acceptance into "The Ton." This story needs a sequel! Maybe the villians can return from the colonies? I look forward to the next in the Some Like It series coming in 2007,"Some Like It Brazen."

1 out of 5 stars Boderline Moronic.......2006-07-07

I have never felt the need to write a review before, and I greatly appreciate those who do as they give me insight on the book at hand.

This one is beyond stupid. Most of it was unbeliveable and some of it was absurd. I wish I could give it half a star for trying, but that isn't a choice.

The characters were dull and the drama silly. Normally it takes me 2-3 days to breeze thru a book (and I have a toddler)but this one was almost painful to complete. And in fact I didn't even finish the last 3 pages because I couldn't have cared if they made it together or not.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2006-07-06

First time reading this author and I enjoyed this story enough to want to buy Some Like it Wicked and will buy Some Like it Brazen when it comes out.
Clara is a beauty but it's her brains that makes her special. Finally a story where the man needs a beautiful woman for her brains and not her money. Clara is kidnaped by Hawksley but he ends up needing her for her logic and ability to think thing through in finding his brother's killer.
I was a little disappointed in the ending with the way things were left with family and society. I hope their story continues in Some Like it Brazen.

Please don't make me choose which I liked best.
They are both wonderful.

This one goes directly to my keeper shelf!
Thank you Ms. Wildes for a magnificent read.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary work, a triumph of determination.......2005-01-21

Dena Epstein was a Chicago Librarian. She wasn't a paid musicologist, but she was determined to find out the story of African American music from the time we got off the slave ships until the Civil War. She emerged with a triumph.

No one who has not read this book really knows anything about African American, or for that matter American culture and music, worth knowing. Rather than the abstract dwelling on Africanism in this or that part of Black culture, she refutes the idea that the slaves were robbed of their culture she shows how the musical culture of West Africa was carried here and how it was modified and added to.

One of the most interesting aspects of Epstein's book for me is the record of the many different African instruments that were brought to the New World or were remade by Africans in the New World. The common idea that African instruments were limited to drums is refuted here strongly with her references to descriptions of different instruments found in the US and the West Indies. Along the way, Epstein was one of the first to reassert the AFricanness of the banjo and document it.

One interesting question which with the easiness of hindsight and futher research I raise is the issue of fiddling. Epstein documents that contrary to the popular stereotype that AFricans in the America were primarily banjoists or drummers, in the US until the point in the 19th Century when banjos became generally available and popular among most black and poor folks, African American musicians were most closely indentified with the fiddle. This is true not only in the US but in the West Indies.

Epstein does document how quickly after being "imported" African born musicians became excellent players of the fiddle, makers of fiddles, and even teachers of fiddling. She points out that the fiddle was so essential to the lives of planation African Americans that the question of whether the slave master should provide his slaves with a full time fiddler for slave dances was debated in circles who discussed how to manage slaves.

The question is really posed that such quick mastery of a very difficult instrument, and the rather rapid way it was used to play African based music could not be just a coincidence or a product of some kind of general African musical ability, but the product of retention of traditions that come from West African bowed instruments. Blacks who were fiddlers already in AFrica on African fiddle like instruments were enslaved, and their rapid progress another feature of transmission of AFrican culture into this country.

Of course, I am looking back from advances pioneered by Epstein and those who followed her.

Read this books and celebrate that triumph and learn what must be known about Black music and American culture.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful History of the Music of Africans in the New World.......1999-01-28

Epstein expertly culls available documentary evidence, including contemporary accounts as well as such sources as runaway slave notices mentioning that the slave in question was a fiddler, to fill in a lot of gaps in our knowledge of how African music developed when it was transplanted to North America. The book is well-written and full of groundbreaking research. It's absolutely essential if you are interested in this subject.
