Book Description
From one of America's most celebrated educators, an inspiring guide to transforming every child's education
In a Los Angeles neighborhood plagued by guns, gangs, and drugs, there is an exceptional classroom known as Room 56. The fifth graders inside are first-generation immigrants who live in poverty and speak English as a second language. They also play Vivaldi, perform Shakespeare, score in the top 1 percent on standardized tests, and go on to attend Ivy League universities. Rafe Esquith is the teacher responsible for these accomplishments.
From the man whom The New York Times calls a genius and a saint comes a revelatory program for educating today's youth. In Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire!, Rafe Esquith reveals the techniques that have made him one of the most acclaimed educators of our time. The two mottoes in Esquith's classroom are Be Nice, Work Hard, and There Are No Shortcuts. His students voluntarily come to school at 6:30 in the morning and work until 5:00 in the afternoon. They learn to handle money responsibly, tackle algebra, and travel the country to study history. They pair Hamlet with rock and roll, and read the American classics. Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire! is a brilliant and inspiring road map for parents, teachers, and anyone who cares about the future success of our nation's children. BACKCOVER:
Praise for Rafe Esquith:
Rafe Esquith is my only hero.
Sir Ian McKellan
Politicians, burbling over how to educate the underclass, would do well to stop by Rafe Esquith's fifth grade class as it mounts its annual Shakespeare play. Sound like a grind? Listen to the peals of laughter bouncing off the classroom walls.
Time
Esquith is a modern-day Thoreau, preaching the value of good work, honest self-reflection, and the courage to go one's own way.

Too good to be true? I think so........2007-10-09
A couple years ago I wrote an Amazon review of Esquith's first book, which you can find at "There Are No Shortcuts." I liked some of its ideas while finding the author a manipulative loony.
Afterwards, a credible-seeming series of emails arrived to my email address from somebody who said he was a former student of Mr. Esquith. He spelled out in detail accusations against Esquith in terms of his controlling and inappropriate relations with students. He asked for help in exposing them publicly. I urged him to contact a journalist or school officials.
Now, I don't know if any of this was true, of course. And teachers are very vulnerable to being falsely accused. But now that I see Esquith put out another book this year AND that some Hollywood types put out a book about his Shakespeare troupe, I have to wonder if anybody is going to investigate this guy?
It is astonishing to me that his megalomania, so obvious to many other reviewers on here, is glossed over by his fans like it was just a mild flaw like "caring too much" or being forgetful. Megalomania in a teacher is a very dangerous thing! He is not a college professor but a teacher of 5th graders! Having read his work, I know I would not trust him with my child.
priceless.......2007-10-02
As a mom of a 3rd and 4th grader I can't say how grateful I am to have run across this book. Rafe has distilled years of experience and success with children into what amounts to a powerful guidebook for anyone raising kids. A previous reviewer recommended borrowing this book from the library. I am grateful I bought it, and, having read it, would be happy to pay a lot more for it if I had to. My copy is full of post-its, placed to remind myself of great pieces of information, advice and inspiration to follow up on. I have attended classes on parenting, read books on parenting, listened to radio programs on parenting etc, so I can honestly say: this book is a jewel. It was also very entertaining to read, with lots of moving anecdotes. I am so glad the author squeezed in the time to share his vast experience with the rest of the world.
Wish I'd Read This Years Ago.......2007-09-06
Rafe is the courageous teacher I wish I'd been in my career. He brings so much of himself and his passions into the classroom. While this book doesn't spell it out, it's obvious that he's had to find ways around school and district policies that could have kept him from creating a classroom environment of high achieving students year after year.
The sheer efficiency and effectiveness of his teaching is astounding! Not only should every teacher read this book, but so should every administrator, teacher educator, and policy maker. For parents, the book is full of practical tips for raising children and developing character. I'd have loved to have done my teacher training in Rafe's classroom.
Extraordinary.......2007-09-05
Rafe is an extraordinary person and teacher. He practices what he preaches and sets an incredible example for other teachers. Rafe knows how to get results. He has 25 years experience and is extremely willing to help up and coming teachers (I know this personally).
I highly recommend his books to all educators. We should all follow such an example of integrity, hard work and creativity. If we did, education would be changed forever.
Motivational!.......2007-08-23
This book is a wonderful resource for teachers- in it's specific strategies that can be implemented in your classroom tomorrow, as well as in reminding us how "bigger picture thinking" about what it means to help create a literate person means....and how one teacher accomplishes this with his students.
The point is not to aspire to "be" the author or the teacher that he is by doing what he does, but to aspire to connect with students in way that has the same impact with students.
A great read for the beginning of the school year, or when your motivation or energy is "flagging" a little!

Book Description
Bestselling author Kat Martin takes you into the glittering ballrooms and candlelit boudoirs of Regency-era England in a novel of seduction and secrets, and breathtaking romance.
Kassandra "Kitt" Wentworth was no ordinary young woman. Headstrong and rebellious, this daughter of a viscount had no intention of obeying her father, submitting to a husband...or falling in love. But she never thought a man like Clayton Harcourt would pursue her. As the bastard son of a wealthy duke, Clay was no stranger to scandal. Taking a wife was not his plan, but Kitt's wild spirit drew him like a flame in the darkness, and the gossip swirling around her awakened a desire to tame and protect her. When Clay lays a trap for marriage, Kitt can't help but surrender to the passion he stirs within her. But will a secret from her past keep her from trusting her heart to the magnificent rogue who arouses her most burning desires?

Wow another Martin winner for me........2007-03-05
I was surprised at any of the bad reviews. I really loved this book. To me Clay and Kitt really were an intense couple and they grabbed me from the very beginning. I loved the way Clay managed to get Kitt to have to marry him, what a switch that was. And of course she had no idea until much later when it really impacted how she felt about him and their troubled marriage. She had some difficult issues for them to overcome but Clay was amazing through that and you just had to love this guy. Shocking that it is Kitt that leaves him and he is devistated. Of course these women just were always afraid of those mistresses back then. But Clay had given her no reason to worry. It was great seeing her come back and have to prove herself to him. That was rather a switch from the usual the guy having to prove themselves. For me this was another winner by Kat Martin. I just do not think this woman is capable of anything less than a 4 or 5 star book.
Disappointing.......2005-01-21
This book was way too long. The beginning and ending were action-filled and interesting, but the middle section just dragged along in a very frustrating direction.
As a modern woman, I immediately admired Kitt for her rebellion against her society's oppression towards women - she was intelligent and lively, not to be owned or dictated to by a man. She was found a perfect mate in Clay, who encouraged her free way of thinking, and rather than hold her back, he went along with her on all her adventures. Even the bickering between them, something I usually find very annoying in a romance novel, was appropriate - probably b/c it was short-lived and basically the two did show great respect towards each other. Having been raped as a teenager, Kitt was afraid of sex, and Clay was incredibly patient and tender towards her regarding this, slowly gaining her trust and helping her to understand her sexuality.
It's no wonder these two fell deeply in love. So then, why did Kitt leave Clay after just a few weeks of marriage, right after discovering that physcial intimacy was a beautiful way to express their deep love? Her reasoning 1) that he didn't really love her b/c he never said it in words, despite his every action showing how desperately in love with her he was - and 2) that one woman would never be enough for him, and eventually he would stray and she couldn't bear to share him - were ridiculous. And then when she finally came to her senses, Clay had heartened his heart in bitterness towards her. This conflict was so unnecessary, and torturously dragged the story down. A little communication, which would have been expected from two such outspoken characters, could have avoided this entire mess.
The action packed ending, when their lives were threatened by an enemy from their past, brought them to a greater understanding of their love for each other, and redeemed the story.
BORING BORING BORING.......2005-01-17
Don't waste your time reading this book. It was very predictable. It just seemed to drag on and on. It seems like Kat Martin took ideas from other books and put them into this one. It gets boring to read the same old stuff written over and over again.
No sparks flying here - it was an all out FIRE!.......2004-06-03
What a romance! It was my first KM book to read and I look forward to more. There is tension from the very beginning of their story and it grows! Kitt and Clay go way back. Clay is the typical hunk of a hero- a regency rake all the way. While Kitt is strong willed, beautiful, independent, and reckless. There's always been some taunting going back & forth between them. But Kitt goes too far dressing up like a boy and sneaking off only to get caught and locked up in her up in her room by her father. He declares either she gets married or he is sending her away. So Clay and Kitt are forced to marry due to being found in a compromising position. And instead of things smoothing out for them the tension just gets stronger. Clay is hoping to settle Kitt down by marriage but Kitt (in her mind) feels that Clay could never be happy and faithful to only one woman. Kitt has a secret in her past that keeps her from giving herself totally to Clay. But Clay is willing to wait- the sexual tension just gets stronger now. Actually it has been strong all the way through the book. ha, ha!!! There are twists and turns all throughout the story. And the story drew me in from the very beginning. I really enjoyed it. It's a keeper for me.
Marry me Clay..........2003-07-04
That says it all. I like many others read this book out of sync in the trilogy. I started with Fanning the Flame and then this one and still have the first one to go yet. The characters are terrific with the bantering and then the love that develops. I too was slightly disappointed with Kitt's sudden departure. After she was able to stand up to her domineering father, you'd think she had enough gumption to stick it out with Clay. But alas, that is what makes romance novels. Girl meets guy, they fall in love, huge misunderstanding, and then the huge reunion. Always have to make the readers want to fight for the characters. Give this one a try. I'm not upset that I read it out of order, heck I didn't even realize it really until after I read the other reviews. I did see cross over characters, but it doesn't hurt the continuity of the books.

While there's an abundance of television shows about police officers and more than a few about emergency medical folks, lesser attention is paid to fire fighters and their day-to-day dealings with disaster. But Steve Delsohn has found a wealth of material by interviewing scads of fire fighters across the country, from smoke jumpers flown in to fight forest fires to crews in action-filled urban departments. You learn the humorous lingo of fire fighting, where "putting the wet stuff on the red stuff" is paramount. You'll also relive more than a few gripping, emotional stories--the kind that might make good fodder for a drama series.

The Best!.......2000-02-23
I love this book! I am a volunteer firefighter and I am also going to college full time. I chose to read this book for my book report, and I must say that it has really touched my heart. I know where most of these people are comming from. I hope that everyone who reads this review will get the book and read it. Happy Reading!
What it's like to be "on the job" fighting fire........1998-05-25
Fires and firefighters have fascinated people since the days of the bucket brigade. In this book, Steve Delsohn has taken the time to get behind the scenes, and talk to the men and women who do the backbreaking, dirty work that is firefighting.
This is a closed society, just because no one else can understand what it is we see day in and day out. Among us are the Samaritans wishing only to help others, the adrenaline junkies who groove on the rush you get going in to a burning building, and the guys who just like the days off.
A lot of people try to get on the job, and not many make it. This is your chance to see what it's like, and who the real people are who man (person?) the firestations around this country. After reading it, you'll understand why I'm proud to call all of them my brothers.
Firefighters speak from the heart.......1998-03-04
In The Fire Inside Steve Delsohn got firefighters to candidly speak about their most dangerous job. They tell of the trauma of dealing with the victums of fire, the misery in the strret, but the comaraderie they find with other firefighters. Highly recommended to anyone interest in firefighting.

Great Reminder.......2007-08-23
This is a book that covers an event I remeber as though it happened yesterday. I was at the Beverly Hills two weeks before the fire as a prom guest in the garden room. Mr Elliott did an excellent job of recounting the events of that May.
Interesting...but.......2007-01-10
As a disaster book fan, I was anxious to read a first person account of this deadly fire which, unlike most modern fires, killed a large number of people. The portion of the book devoted to the fire is alright, but spotty since it is, essentially, one man's recollections. I would have appreciated an overview. This did come later in the book during the inquiries but, by then, it had lost its dramatic impact. I also got a little tired of the narrator who, although happily married, seems to consider himself something of a babe magnet. Really, who cares?
An Excellent Study of the Details Behind this Disaster.......2007-01-06
The author of this book gives a precise and complete in-depth picture of the rise and fall of the Beverly Hills Country Club from its beginnings and growth, to its horrific end. As a long time employee of the club, Ron Elliot tells the story from an insiders first person point of view. You feel that you've been there since the Club's inception, getting to know the owners and the employees on a first name basis. You watch as the building is remodeled and expanded on multiple occassions, but without regard to fire codes for reasons unknown. This is an excellent read for fire fighting professionals as well, giving multiple examples of crowd response to an emergency and reinforcing the need for adherence to fire codes in construction, as well as on-going safety inspections. Everyone would do well to read this as a reminder to be aware of where the exits are when going out for an evening's entertainment. An excellent book. I highly recommend it.
In An Age of Glitz and Glamour!.......2003-08-12
This live account of a terrible story should serve to remind us why we have inspections and why politicians need to stay out of
the inspector's way! I bought my copy direct from the author and he signed it for me. To meet him and know his experience is a life changing event
In memory of my 3rd grade Teacher - Mrs Paula Neill.......2001-12-03
The memeory of my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs Paula Neill, inspired me to research this tradegy and, in the end, find and read this book. I can still remember the day that I found out she had died.....i was only 8 years old at the time, a 3rd grader at Taylor Mill Elementary, and it really affected me. She was one of the most compassionate and dedicated teachers I have ever known. She made me realize that there was nothing out of my reach nor anthing that I couldn't achieve if I just put my mind to it. Today I credit her with my success....

WONDERFUL!.......2006-09-03
This book is great! It is full of knowledge and is written in a fun, easy-to-read style! I have had classes with the author. Dr. Jackson writes just as he speaks. A must have for any Alabamian.
Must read for any Alabama voter.......2004-06-14
I enjoyed this book from the Creek Indians until the end. The book ended just before Alabamians would hopefully vote for a better Alabama, however, tax reform we don't have, so business is the same as usual in Alabama. I guess the state has too many "Wal-Mart Republicans." I think the book was a very interesting and educational read. It is not boring like a text book history. It will give you quite an insight on Alabama politics in 1901and 2004, unfortunately not much change has been made. There is so much I could say, but I might be telling too much and I think the readers should draw their own conclusions. However, I do think it should be required reading before any Alabamian is allowed to vote in the State of Alabama!
Too Much PC.......2004-05-31
This book should have been sub-titled "From a Neo-lib's Perspective". According to the author more government is always better as are higher taxes on the "rich" (read middle class). The fault with Alabama's poor educational system lies with Bourbons and fat cats - Paul Hubbert and the AEA are blameless. His insistance that Lincoln's war was about nothing but white Alabamians' desire to perpetuate slavery is patent nonsense, of course. Thank heavens his mother helped integrate a laundrymat in Grove Hill; otherwise he has very little good to say about his people.

Fair and unbiased account of this talented athlete.......2004-08-13
Unlike other purported "bios" of Tonya and Nancy, these writers obviously took the time to interview those close to the skaters rather than depending on news stories for their material. Their attention to detail and the interesting details of backstage life in the fast-paced world of international figure skating make this an interesting read.
Interesting but Quick Read about the Tonya/Nancy Debacle.......2001-07-11
This book was hastily churned out at the height of the Tonya/Nancy knee-whacking incident as a quick money maker for the author and publisher. The problem with this book is that it is not a well-rounded biography of Tonya; the emphasis is too much on the knee-whacking incident and shortly thereafter, stopping just before the '94 Winter Games. It is an interesting collectible for Tonya-philes, but does not give a full portrait of the talented, complex, troubled young woman. Hopefully a more comprehensive biography of Ms. Harding will be available in the future.

no new news really.......2000-06-18
I went into this book a Mike Tyson fan, (of his boxing skills not his human skills) and Mr. Torres does an admirable job of describing some of the craziness that surrounds the fragile world around Mike Tyson everday. His quirky, hard to understand manic depressive behavior, to his antics in the bars at night. But somehow I had the feeling that Mr. Torres was biting his tongue, I feel like after reading this that he is biting his tongue as far as giving us full disclosure.
