Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-09-15
This book is informative on a number of different levels. It helps to identify key differences between the Thai culture and western culture, and gives you the information you need to speak with your significant other about on these differences. My fiancee and I wrote and talked for months before reading this book. I could not figure out why she did not have an opinion on many things I thought were important, and kept saying "up to you". The answer to why she said this so often alone was worth the price of the book, but it gave me many more answers, and an understanding of the Thai culture you only start to glimpse if you read the internet. My fiancee also read the book (in both Thai and English), and said it gave her a much better understanding of some of the things I did where she thought I was being rude or pushy. If you have a significant other who is Thai, BOTH of you should READ THIS BOOK! It will save you hours of frustration, and give you an understanding and a basis of discussion you may never arrive at otherwise. The Thai culture is WAY different than Western culture, and their culture deserves understanding at the very least, and respect for many of their customs. They have a way of dealing with people that I personally find refreshing.
On the down side, I thought the Western lifestyle was a bit too generalized, but it did give the basics for understanding so you could talk with your significant other about those differences. It also assumes that your significant other is in the Thai sex industry, which is not the case with me. It does not really discuss how Thai people deal with that industry, nor how a different background might mean different rules apply. However, again, it provides you an excellent foundation for understanding and discussion, which is about all a book can do.
If you are reading this, then I wish you luck on the journey you are about to undertake. With patience and understanding, you will be rewarded with a wonderful, smart, funny and warm companion who would give their life to you. The key is patience and understanding, and this book goes a long way towards starting that process. Read it! Highly recommended, from both the Thai and Western points of view.
The "bible' for Thai-Farang relationships.......2007-05-12
I bought this for a friend of mine. He was having trouble understanding why his Thai girlfriend brought him to her mom's house. Why did she start asking him for money and then turning around and giving it to her mom?
Here, in this book, are the answers. This very well written book is uniquely written so that the left hand page is in English for the guy and the right hand page is in Thai for the girl.
This should be mandatory reading for any Thai-Farang couple.
Very well done.
Culture Gap - Explains the differences........2007-03-10
Well written and organized.
Would recommend to anyone that wants to gain better understanding of Thai culture and how it may affect relationships with Thai women.
I can not comment on the imbedded Thai version, since unable to read.
Get an insider's view.......2007-01-28
I read this book in 2 days. I recommend this book for any Western man who is dating or courting a Thai woman. I was ignorant to many Thai ways. This book is Heaven-sent as it is easy to read and understand and cleared up a lot of misunderstandings I had previously.
For example: Many guys told me that Thai women lie and to get used to it. I had a negative view of this. But the truth is that Thai culture is non-confrontational and that it saves face of everyone involved. In order to avoid anyone being embarrassed or degraded, Thai people may at times stretch the truth or speak something other than the blatant truth. This is not meant maliciously, but as a Westerner it may be hard to understand, especially if you are from a culture that prides itself from boldness, bluntness and outspokeness.
Because of my German heritage, I was taught to be blunt and not to beat around the bush. I was taught that this was a sign of respect towards others. I learned that in Thai culture this is a sign of DISREPSECT. It is often to save face and to avoid confrontation in Thailand.
Also the issue with the dowry bride price bothered me until I read this book. I felt uncomfortable with the idea of paying for a woman to marry her. But since reading this book, I realized that Thai culture expects men to pay a dowry as a symbol of love, respect, appreciation and gratitude to the wife's parents for raising and caring for her.
Not every family will require a dowry, so each situation is different.
It is also a sign of readiness to support the future wife. In the West we are taught that love is seperate from money, but in other cultures money may represent a symbol of love. This way of thinking is very different from what I was taught in the West, but it did help me to be more open minded to other ways of thinking. It helped me to understand the deep feelings of Thai culture and to realize that it is not necessarily "gold digging" or "greediness" for a woman to ask for money or material things.
I also understood why a woman may feel depressed, sad, or angry if her boyfriend or husband does not give her material things. On the western point of view it may be seen as "buying" love, but the #1 value of Thai people is generosity. They base their self worth on how generous they are. Therefore, it is hard for them to understand if someone does not want to show generosity.
(Of course balance and communication along with compromise is best in any relationship no matter what cultures are involved. Letting your girlfriend/wife and her family know what you can reasonably afford to help with is almost always going to avoid problems. Letting them know that your heart is true and genuine can often make life a lot easier.)
Although each Thai-Western relationship will differ, I will recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand his Thai girlfriend or wife and where she is coming from.
To my delight, the book is written in both Thai and English, so your
wife or girlfriend and her family can also read this to understand
you better.
Not every single thing in this book will apply to every single relationship, but it does give you something to work from if you are new to this all.

I found a lot of truths contained in this book, sure there are some things that i might not agree with but it is full of some useful information that i do agree with.

Perfect Gift.......2007-08-03
This book is so sweet! I was so excited when I opened the package and found exactly what I was hoping for. My 4yr old flower girl will love it.
Great Flower Girl Book.......2007-07-19
I gave this book to my flower girl the night before the wedding. She loved it and it gave her a better understanding of all the events that were going to take place the next day!
Suitable for your youngest flowergirl.......2006-08-08
This is a lovely rhyming story suitable for your youngest flowergirl. It's definitely in the 2-4yr old range. I bought it for my three year old niece who is flowergirl at our upcoming wedding and wrote in above each character our names and hers.
The Flower Girl.......2006-07-14
Cute book, if all you are looking for is a simple poem. However, I would say less than average if you are hoping to really explain "flower girl" details, and processes to a little girl.
Great Little Book.......2005-08-09
This book is really good to present to the young ones the day of the wedding to keep them occupied during the wait. It was in excellent condition.

Biscuit Loves Mother's Day.......2007-06-12
I believe that all the Biscuit books are written very well and I know that my child loves them all. This book shows how the little girl and her dog Biscuit prepare for Mother's Day. It is written very well and I would recommend it to anyone with small children.
Right To the Point.......2005-07-28
Another Biscuit holiday flap book that gets right to the point. This time it is Mother's Day and The-Girl-In-Purple-Sneakers and Biscuit are going to make it a special day for Mom and show how much they care. Gifts are made, Mom seeps in, and a special breakfast in bed are just the beginning of Mom's special day.
The book is packed with the typically adorable artwork that has been a backbone to the Biscuit series. The end flaps reveal what Biscuit is up to in his usual puppyish ways. All in all another good holiday book that is attractive and fun to read.

Book Description
Easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to understand, in this book the authors define and demystify the unique language of consensual sadomasochism, examine the psychological power of erotic dominance and submission, provide a carefully considered guide for safe SM play, and explain how SM can be an activity of intense intimacy and sophisticated erotic theater, as well as one of simple sexual pleasure. Combining their extensive professional credentials with deep personal experience, the result is an original introduction to a widely misunderstood realm of human sexuality.
"Henkin and Holiday have done erotic explorers a wonderful favor. Their useful book is concise and clearheaded in all things SM. But the most radical concept for many will surely be the notion to simply have fun." - Mark Thompson, editor of Leatherfolk
I've actually recomended this book more often than my own. That's because you're holding what is without doubt, one of the finest and most useful books on BDSM ever written. It can help you distinguish between looking and seeing. Not for skimmers........this one is soul food. - Guy Baldwin, M.S. author of TIES THAT BIND and SlaveCraft
Henkin and Holiday offer a very useful book about BDSM for mainly beginners in the scene but also for anyone who just like staying on top of opinions about BDSM. The book is well organized with a glossary right after a good discussion of special terms used in BDSM. Likewise sample negotiation forms are found at the end of the chapter where the procedure is explained. The largest section of the book concerns safety but not necessarily the kind you might find in "On the Safe Edge" or "Learning the Ropes". Here the focus is on learning about yourself first, learning about your partner second, and then how to explore BDSM. Throughout the idea that BDSM is primarily a pleasureable partnership is embraced and indeed in my personal experiences the best SM or Ds relationships are partnerships. Neither Henkin nor Holiday say that their way is the only way but they give solid reasons for their opinions and make suggestions based on years in the scene and as scholars and educators. This is definately a book I have proud to have in my library and one I recommend to people new to BDSM. - TammyJo Eckhart from kinkybooks.com
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-09-25
If you are exploring the lifestyle, this book is a good general overview of what to expect. But, as with any "how to" book, real life experiences vary. This book is very explicit and informative. It is tastefully written to inform the reader, not tantilize. The book accomplishes its objective.
Consensual Sadomasochism.......2007-09-17
The book was very well written. For those that are new to the lifestyle it is a good starting book, as it explaines what to learn as to what you and your partner like. For those in the lifestayle sometimes it is a good thing to review and learn something new from a book that has been revised.
The book express important facts ,CPR,First Aid.
Sadomasochism for beginners.......2004-09-23
A very interesting read. This book will allow you to enter what some see as the mirky world of sado-masochism safely. Communication is key - especially in China.
Beautifully Done!!.......2001-12-19
Written by two long time members of the SM community, Consensual Sadomasochism offers a great "intro" to consensual power exchange play. The authors display a considerable breadth of knowledge and a wonderfully tolerant and open attitude toward all forms of BDSM play. The book is easy to read and follow and covers SM "basics," including fundamental concepts like safe words, limits, negotiation, and consent. The book contains good, if somewhat limited, descriptions of basic SM play (bondage, spanking, clamps, etc). There is also a good section on finding partners and how to find the SM community, along with a bibliography.
The authors did a wonderful job putting this book together.

The Ultra Cool Parents Guide to NYC.......2000-10-30
I just returned from a week+ trip to NYC with my 9 year old and I thought that this book was very helpful. The authors describe a number of day trips to take with your child, including dining suggestions. It gives you lots of things to do in a small area and in NYC that is VERY important. I liked the notes on how to get to places on the subway and the small maps that pointed out the location of each thing they suggested for that "trip". As an out-of-towner what I found most helpful were the tips on kid friendly restaurants. There are a millions places to eat in NYC and it was nice to go to places that had been kid tested and enjoyed by adults.

Customer Reviews:
You can do better (and I should have known better).......2007-02-23
Since I'm planning another trip to Italy this year, I got the current edition on a whim. I had bought an old version several years ago on a discount rack when I first started traveling to Europe and I found a fair bit of the information helpful, but this one is a disappointment in several ways. As others have pointed out, much of the information is quite obviously inaccurate or out of date. Furthermore, this is not much good as a shopping guide unless you have money to burn since it is heavily skewed toward the high-end designer market. The author throws in a few snippets from her younger associates about more affordable places to shop but that's not enough. Admittedly, Italy hasn't been a bargain hunter's paradise for many years, even before the currency conversion that has almost ruined shopping in Europe for us Americans, but there really are many affordable options for the average traveler. Just take a look on Virtual Tourist or some fo the other travel forums & you'll find a wealth of advice. From that & my own searches, I've found a pile of good shopping information. Now if I can do that on my own, surely Gershman and her team could have done a better job of research, especially if they have the nerve to charge money for it.
However, my real problem is with Gershman's attitude, which has clearly worsened between the date of my old edition and the present one. The woman is a snob, plain and simple. If you don't catch this from her over-emphasis on designer goods, you'll figure it out from all of her complaining about Italy being overrun with tourists (obviously forgetting that she is one herself)and the Italian merchants taking advantage of this by offering more & more junk. When I read her review of Francesco Rogani, a handbag shop in Rome, I truly wondered if I had been to the same place: she claims that there is a discrepancy between the selling price & the actual retail, the latter of which she claims is too much for sub-standard goods, but what is even more puzzling is her complaint that the clerks have a "less than customer-oriented" attitude. I have been there several times & have never been told of this mysterious difference between prices. Also, I have always found them to be courteous and polite; in fact, on my last visit, they found out it was my birthday & offered to get me a reservation at a special restaurant that I never would have found on my own (it was wonderful and they treated me to the appetizer, dessert, and a glass of liqueur). Now if that isn't "customer-oriented" service, I don't know what is.
Anyone who's traveled abroad even a few times will tell you the same thing: if you act like a typical snotty, demanding tourist, you won't be treated well. The Golden Rule is especially important these days for us Americans, and I assure you that if you are polite, well-mannered and friendly to the Italians or anyone else, you'll have a wonderful time shopping. Talk to the concierge at the hotel and the waiters & shop owners if you want to find out the real bargains - they may not be big-name designer baubles screaming their status, but they will be special, something that a real Italian would own, and more than likely something that you wouldn't find back home.
SUZY IS THE BEST OUT THERE......BAR NONE.......2005-09-22
I have traveled to Europe and Asia with a trusty Born To Shop Guide Book many times and Suzy gives me the best overall advice. Every once in a while a new writer will come on board with no experience and forgot to warn us of the pitfalls of being a "Rich American Traveler"-Suzy has steered me clear of many problems while traveling alone. This is the reason I ADORE her and have even bought the older versions just to compare information. Time moves on and locations change.
Can't wait for the new Born To Shop San Francisco and I just received the new Asian version-try these too!
Don't bother!.......2005-07-27
Don't bother buying this book. First, none of the Born To Shop books get updated much between editions, so lots of information is out of date. Second, Suzy Gershman is totally out of touch with reality. I took a shopping tour to Italy with a company called Shop Around Tours and obviously a lot of us had this book. The tour leader warned us not to pay too much attention to it and she was right. BUT we went to Mantero, which is one of the places mentioned in the book, and it was great. Otherwise, the people that went off on their own following Suzy's wild goose chases were very disappointed. So the shopping in Italy was great, but this book was a waste of money.
Full of inaccuracies.......2005-03-31
Suzy Gershman needs to retire already. All of her books, including this one, are full of inaccuracies. Each edition is barely updated, so there's no need to buy the new version if you have an old one. It's time Frommers dropped Gershman and hired someone under the age of 70 to update these books that shops NOW and knows what they're talking about. These Born To Shop books are an amusing read but a complete waste of money if you're looking for current information.

Great Lakes Shipwrecks & Survivals

Book Description
The legend of The Christmas Tree Ship is a true story of faith, hope and love, and is considered one of the most loved legends of the Great Lakes.
Captain Herman Schuenemann became affectionately known as "Captain Santa" for his yearly voyages from Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Chicago with a load of freshly cut Christmas trees during the late 1800's and early 1900's. Families would wait anxiously at the docks for their choice of the best trees.
Captain Schuenemann's voyage of 1912 was to be his last. Fully loaded and ready to sail, the Christmas Tree Ship set out for its final destination on the southern end of Lake Michigan. Despite the crew's best efforts, the ship was unable to withstand the gales of the Great Lakes and went down off the coast of Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
Today, the Christmas Tree Ship is remembered as one of the most "storied shipwrecks" of the Great Lakes, and the legend has held its place in history for nearly a century already.
Through vintage photographs (over 50!), newspaper clippings, and interviews with persons directly connected to the story, THE HISTORIC CHRISTMAS TREE SHIP details the extraordinary events surrounding this loved legend.
Customer Reviews:
A story of the ship and family who brought Christmas trees to Chicago..........2007-07-17
This is a beautiful book that tells the story of Captain Schuenemann and his family and crew who brought trees from northern Michigan to Chicago for the people to buy at Christmas, and the disaster that took the captain and crew's life. It is a story of hope following sadness as the Schuenemann family carried on the work after the shipwreck. The pictures and historic articles are great. Nice story to read just prior and during the Christmas season.

Terrific!.......2007-08-15
A HOLIDAY OF LOVE is a delightful collection of short stories and is very enjoyable!
Loved Nick????.......2007-07-08
What happened to this character? I didn't even know him. I loved him in all the other books. She should of gave him is own book to make us understand why he fell in love with Julianna in the first place or did he ever. I really can't remember it was so short and forgettable. These characters deserved much more than this. This is the only time I haven't like a Judith McNaught book (I guess its not a book but a short story) I loved all her work up until now. Couldn't wait to read Nicks story only to be disappointed. Don't waste your money.
Completely Disappointed.......2007-03-22
First, let me admit that I bought this book solely to read Judith McNaught's story. I only recently stumbled onto her and after reading Whitney My Love and the two associated books, when I read that this story was about Nick Du Ville, I quickly ordered the book.
What a total disappointment. Even without knowing that the characters of Nick and Julia Skeffington are characters in the other books, this story doesn't hold water. It reads like an outline. And it could have been a great book in and of itself. Why go to the trouble of creating such a wonderful character as Nick, having him very visible and playing rather large roles in previous books, then dismiss him like this. Better not to have written any further about him at all.
In fairness to the other authors whose stories form this compilation, the fact that I was so disgusted with Miracles made me completely uninterested in reading them. Shame on you, Ms. McNaught. If I could give you zero stars, I would.
On my KEEPER shelf.......2007-02-10
This book is also on my keeper shelf as it is a continuation of the Whitney My Love and Until You series from Judith McNaught. They had me crying and reading 'til all hours of the night. This and a Gift of Love finished up the series.
Heartwarming, albeit short holiday novellas..........2005-12-10
This is a wonderful and heartwarming holiday anthology from some rather big romance authors, namely Judith McNaught and Jude Deveraux. I had never read anything by Deveraux before this book, but it won't be the last after reading the wonderful novella Change of Heart, the only contemporary effort in this collection. The story of a twelve-year-old prodigy and his quest to match-make his mother with a cynical millionaire is endearing and compelling and had the holiday spirit in full swing when using a young boy to bring two people together. Then I read the reason I bought this book: Judith McNaught's Miracles, Nicholas Duville's story. The novella was wonderful and it was full of the things that I've come to know and love about the McNaught stories. It has the romantic encounters between Julianna (from Until You) and Nicholas, the misunderstanding and the ultimate remorse and humbling from the hero. McNaught fans are familiar with this formula, so the aforementioned summary isn't a spoiler in the slightest. The story is very well done and nicely told despite its short length, and my heart went out to the heroine during the misunderstanding -- signs of a well-executed novella. However, I had wanted to read Nick's story since reading Whitney, My Love, and I, like the vast amount of reviewers here, feel McNaught should have written a full-length novel centered on him and Julianna. This had the makings of another emotionally-driven offering, but the readers got stuck with only the appetizer instead of the main course. As a novella, Miracles is wonderful, but I wanted more from the very sexy Nicholas. I enjoyed the other two novellas as well. Jill Barnett's Daniel and the Angel is an enchanting sort-of paranormal set in Old New York and Arnette Lamb's Hark! The Herald was a riveting, page-turning love story set during Medieval Scotland. All in all, A Holiday of Love is a light, sweet and wonderful little holiday offering that will make you smile. I am pleased if a bit unsatisfied with what little I got from Nicholas Duville. Such a great hero deserved his own 500-page novel. Sigh. Should I keep my fingers crossed and hope for an extended version of this novella or a sequel to this story?

The book is wonderful. I used it in a classroom lesson about Valentine's Day. It has a lot of good lessons on feelings and emotions too.
The Best Author.......2007-01-18
All 4 of my grandchildren, especially the 4 yr olds, loved the story and illustrations kept their attention. Eileen is the best author for children, she really relates to what they appreciate.
