5 out of 5 stars Positive, Encouraging.......2007-10-09

This book was written for teen girls, but anybody can read it and find encouragement. It talks about the things that are really important, and encourages teen girls to focus on those. It gives advice about certain important issues, such as family, boyfriends, body, health, etc. This book also gives links to important hotlines and websites. This book is small and easy to read, yet powerful. I would recommend this book to anybody who needs or wants encouragement and upliftment.

4 out of 5 stars Frank and Straight to the Point.......2004-12-28

Diane Mastromarino's book is an empowering book for teens, but tweens can also benefit from her advice. Straightforward about concerns girls face like body image and school stresses, this book is easy to read and non-stressful. My little sister will appreciate this book as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY, a book that middle school girls can relate to!.......2004-09-24

This is a fantastic book for any teen/tween girl. In short, concise, humorous chapters, this book tells the truth about all things stressful to young ladies. It discusses self-image, boyfriends, siblings, families, divorce, eating disorders, clothing choices, friendship problems, etc. etc. etc.
I teach middle school, and find this book extremely relevant, and thoroughly wonderful.

Book Description

The forecast is smooth sailing for Oliver Chancellor, scion of Galveston's premier financier. Destined to take his place in the hallowed marble corridors of his family's bank, Chance is content with the future that's been mapped out for him, right down to his upcoming engagement to a prim debutante enthusiastically approved by his socialite mother. But when beautiful Rory St. Claire crosses his path, Chance recklessly plunges into uncharted territory with nothing but his heart to guide him-and a beautiful woman to tempt him.... Propelled by a lifelong goal to buy the island home reportedly haunted by her colorful ancestors, Rory desperately needs Chance's help in securing a business loan, and she won't take no for an answer. In the midst of convincing the hesitant blue blood to take a chance on her dream, Rory unexpectedly lands in Chance's arms, stunned by his red-blooded passion-and her own awakened desire. Now, the mismatched pair can't keep their hands off one another, and something tells Rory she's headed for trouble-trouble in the name of love....AUTHORBIO: Most authors say they grew up reading but not JULIE ORTOLON. Born with dyslexia, she didn't even learn to read until her early twenties when she discovered that romance novels were worth the struggle. It is only with the additional discovery of computers with spell-check that she was able to turn her favorite hobby-daydreaming romantic stories-into a career. Having her first novel hit the USA Today bestseller list was a dream come true. Julie lives on the shores of Lake Travis near Austin, TX with her journalist husband, exuberant Australian Shepherd, and spoiled tabby cat.

2 out of 5 stars Not for me..........2007-08-19

I picked up this book because I'd read some good references to Julie Ortolon in a forum and wanted to try her. I'm afraid this book didn't do it for me. The story line was very weak. In this day and age, a 28-year-old man really plans on marrying a woman he hasn't even dated and feels no romantic connection with because their families want them to marry? And then when he slips and has a liaison with the heroine but later treats her like dirt because of this imaginary engagement, she takes him back in the end?

There were engaging parts of this book. I enjoyed Rory's character, and her brother and sister were interesting characters (who I assume will have their own books). But the improbable plot and uneven characterization of the main male character (Chance) spoiled the book for me.

5 out of 5 stars The first of THREE wonderful stories!.......2004-05-04

I heard so much about the "St. Claire" trilogy, I bought them all and read them in a row - - and boy am I glad I did!

Julie Ortolon knows how to write a terrific, heart-warming story. We have a less-than-perfect "nerd" who falls for a less-than-perfect-full-steam-ahead beauty and the combination is....well.....PERFECT!

Ms. Ortolon has done an amazing job in weaving a story so real, I'm ready to stay at the St. Claire's Inn on Pearl Island. (Can someone get me a reservation??) The story-line of sunken treasure is fascinating and the by-play between the characters is not only funny, it's very real and will leave you laughing and sighing. I love that this authors gives her characters insecurites that we see them struggle through...it makes them so believable and endears them to us! By mid-book you'll be cheering for the heroine, I guarantee!

Do yourself a favor and get the whole trilogy. They are terrific! Rock on....Julie O!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the time.......2003-07-09

In "Falling for You," Julie Ortolon has written a smart, amusing and engrossing novel.
It's the first of what will become a trilogy about three siblings, two women and a man, and their romantic and professional adventures on Pearl Island, an imaginary spot near Galveston in Texas.
Rory St. Claire, beautiful, impetuous and yet uncertain, has a dream. She wants to buy the family home and turn it into an inn. But she has to find solutions to external problems, and conquer internal doubts to try to make that dream come true.
Ortolon's characters are convincing -- fully realized people with strengths and weaknesses who grow into a new understanding of themselves and their world -- and her plot arises and develops naturally.
But it's Ortolon's wit and her ear for dialogue that make this book a stand out.
I am looking forward reading her next effort.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 *s - Mr Slow and Steady meets Ms Full Speed Ahead!.......2003-03-29

Oliver "Chance" Chancellor is a good son of the country club set with his life and career mapped out. It is simply understood that he'll marry Paige, the daughter of his parents' best friends and will someday be the president of the bank his family founded. His nickname is almost a joke, since he's rarely taken a "chance" in his life!

But when free spirited, alluring, enthusiastic whirlwind Aurora St Claire re-enters his life, he's thrown for a loop. She comes upon him putting up a foreclosure sign on Pearl Island and immediately expresses an interest in buying it. She wants to turn the house into a B&B, but the skeptical Chance asks about her business plan, finances and other realities and sees her enthusiasm dim - but just a bit! Dazzled, he finds himself offering to help her pull together a business plan to submit for a bank loan. Chance had been in lust with Rory back in high school and is still fascinated and attracted, though she's totally wrong for him. While they work together on the plans, an attraction builds culminating in a frenzied sexual encounter that he immediately regrets, but she cherishes. He fully intends to go back to his carefully planned, comfortable life, and this reality soon smacks her in the face.

As Aurora and her siblings move forward with their plans for the inn, Chance watches from a distance, feeling a bit wistful, envious, left out and admiring of their willingness to take such risks to make their dream come true. In time, he is desperate to be a part of it all and offers to buy into the venture as a partner. Can he and Rory work in such close proximity without acting on the attraction that still exists between them? And why can't Chance feel this heady attraction with Paige?

Ultimately, Chance must face his feelings for both Rory and Paige and make some life changing choices. Meanwhile Rory begins to contemplate the consequences of her impulsive actions and fears that she has up-ended not only her life, but Chance's, Paige's and her siblings'.

An enjoyable story, endearing characters and a recommended read. I loved sister Allison's story "Lead Me On" and I look forward to brother Adrian's story "Don't Tempt Me" due in early "04.

4 out of 5 stars A sucker for books with plenty of local color..........2002-08-23

I love books that are set in an area new to me and that evoke local color so dramatically that I feel that I am there or that I want to be there [in my case, now I want to go visit Galveston, Texas!].

This is a story with plenty of color, and one which takes a standard plotline - rich stuffy banker meets wild child - and sets it on its ear. Rich characterization helps, and the secondary characters are multidimensional living human beings who have their own life histories. There are some funny scenes, but what counted for me in this book was the wonderful evocation of a city in small-town mode, the twists and turns in the relationship between the banker and the "wild child", and the hints at family secrets between the two of them.

The plotline is simple - Oliver Chancellor "Chance" is a banker whose father has just sold his small family-owned bank to an East Coast group. He is still expected to spend his life with the bank, to behave suitably and to marry suitably. His intended bride Paige is the daughter of old family friends. However, Oliver finds himself attracted to the sister of a schoolmate. Aurora "Rory" St Claire comes from an unconventional and almost disreputable family, with a famous local scandal in their past. She is a tour guide, her brother is a chef, and her sister works for a gallery. Nothing particularly special about Rory, except her stunning looks and her bubbly personality. Rory has self-esteem issues (we soon learn why), but she desperately wants to run her own B&B. When a house belonging to an ancestor is up for sale (after foreclosure by Chance's bank), Rory tries to obtain a loan to buy the property and get the B&B started. Oliver helps out, as much because he wants to help start a new business and see what else he is capable of, as because he wants to spend time with Rory against his better judgement. However, the loan from Chance's bank falls through. [I am going to end here to prevent spoilers].

The plot is complicated by secrets in Rory's families, the long-term effects of their family scandal (the most famous in Galveston), and by the contradictions within Oliver and Rory themselves. Oliver knows that he desires Rory, but he considers her an unsuitable wife for a small-town banker (which she is). He is prepared to marry a woman he does not love, simply to meet the expectations of their families, friends and the community. Rory often acts without thinking and creates trouble down the road for herself. But her vision of a B&B helps her to stumble along, discovering much of her hidden potential. If you are looking for a modern romance where a heroine makes a go out of a demanding new career (i.e does not downsize), this is a great book.

There are some scenes of lovemaking (including one rather sudden burst of passion, with the aftermath described in funny detail), but these do not take up very much space. The passion, the sexual attraction between the couple is described through other means - the first kiss (when you just have to compare Rory's reaction to Paige's), the fact that Chance keeps thinking about Rory at work and with other people, the reactions of other people to their relationship.

What I loved about this book was the quirky relationships between the protagonists and the secondary characters, the way in which local history and geography was incorporated into a romance, the fact that secondary romances (past and present) existed but did not detract from the relationship between Chance and Rory. I also loved the fact that the author was clearly setting us up for at least one sequel, with major changes to Chance's lifestyle by the end of the book and a hinted-at romance for Rory's older sister.

I did have mixed feelings about Chance and Rory. I was annoyed with him for being so blind about his true love, for not really wondering earlier what he wanted to do with his life. I also criticized Rory for keeping her secret, a secret. But these were minor problems.

If you like books about strong modern (or post-modern) characters with plenty of local color and with some quirky humor, try this book.

Book Description

As a teenager, Maddy Harvey was a bit of an ugly duckling, but thankfully she’s blossomed since then. But when she meets Kerr McKinnon one summer’s night and discovers, days later, who he really is, that’s when the real problems start. Because everyone in Ashcombe knows what happened 11 years ago, and as far as her mother Marcella is concerned, she would rather tear that family to pieces with her bare hands than see Maddy associate with a McKinnon. And, okay, maybe Marcella isn’t her real mother, but Maddy owes her so much. It’s Romeo and Juliet all over again. Quick, hide those sharp knives and that little bottle of poison.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars a decent read while trapped on an airplane .......2007-09-03

this is your typical buy-at-the-airport-and-read-while-crossing-the-atlantic kind of book; it's entirely average chick lit with the occasional venture into something a bit more original. it contains the usual transformation of an ugly duckling into a good swan, while the evil swan is transformed into a sad and ugly something-else. there is a mother-goose who protects her offspring to no avail (although in this case, the ducklings are not her own), and various other standard romance novel chicks and ducks.

for those who are looking for the equivalent of romeo and juliet, this book is a bad choice. the tragedy is not believable or heart-wrenching enough, and the romances are soppy, sappy and ridiculously predictable. still, for those who are looking for a moderately entertaining novel, fast enough to read on a long flight and not irritating enough to leave it half-read, this might be a good book to pick up. while the characters are bland and unsurprising, the story boring and predictable, the author does possess some bizarre quality that keeps the reader going. I don't know what it is, but I read the entire book in one sitting - perhaps it was the snoring of the person sitting next to me on the airplane that kept me going? either case, it is a quick read and it is what it is - an airplane novel pretending to be a big romance novel. remove the pretense and you're left with a pretty ok companion on your transatlantic flight.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Chick Lit.......2005-08-17

Not Bad. It was quick and easy to read. This is the first book I've read by this author and not as impressed as I thought I would be.

4 out of 5 stars Brit Lit At Its Most Delightful.......2005-05-20

What a fun book this is, a delight in every way. Jill Mansell is one of those Brit Lit authors whose books you cannot resist and cannot put down, and "Falling For You" is a perfect example.

With tongue in cheek, Mansell tells us about a modern-day Romeo and Juliet-type feud. But instead of the Capulets and Montagues, we have two very modern dysfunctional (or otherwise) families living in and near Bath, England. Many years ago, the teenaged son of the McKinnon family struck and killed the disabled daughter of the Harvey family in his speeding car. A trial found him guilty and sentenced him to jail, but an overheard thoughtless remark by his mother was never forgotten or forgiven.

Fast forward a decade. The Harvey father has passed away, but his wife Marcella, ferociously adoring stepmother of Maddy, Jake and the late disabled April, still keeps the feud going strong. That's fine with everyone--until Maddy falls in love with Kerr, brother of the man who struck down April. And even though Kerr was not even in the country at the time, Marcella cannot and will not allow a McKinnon anywhere near her family.

Along with this interesting tale are several subplots involving marriages, affairs, breakups and "hookups"--all told with such verve and charm that one cannot help but keep the pages turning. This is simply a gem of the genre. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Cheesy Chick-Lit.......2005-05-04

This book was very easy to read, predictable and soooo unrealistic and cheesy. Even at times of 'trauma' this book came across unbelievably upbeat and happy clappy.

I carried on reading it as it wasn't awful to the point of throwing it against the wall. It would make perfect reading for a long journey or whilst sunbathing on holiday.

From Jill Robinson, the author of Past Forgetting, comes a true story, coauthored with her husband, the English writer Stuart Shaw, about finding love when they both thought they were through with romance.

When Stuart and Jill first met, neither felt like a poster child for serious love. Stuart was recovering from the alcoholism that had wrecked his marriage and ravaged his career. Jill was recovering from a second failed marriage and believed she was done with love forever.

But then, in a crowded Connecticut diner, at about midnight, Jill caught Stuart's eye and shot him a look that said, I'm designed for you. Immediately drawn to Jill, Stuart asked, Would you like to come to my place for a cup of tea sometime?

What follows is a journey toward commitment. You hear it from both points of view: his and hers. If you've ever felt that your opportunity for love was gone, here's the lively story of the creation of a passionate marriage that will fill your heart with joy and hope.

This book is perfect for anyone who loves Celine and her music and loves her album "Falling Into You". This book contains the sheet music for all the songs except "River deep, Mountain high". The book is not for people who are at a beginner's level in piano but is not too difficult for intermediate players. It also has the guitar chords for all you Jimmy hendrix, Bonnie Raitt wannabes. The book also is perfect for singers.I myself have used it for auditions and it is clear and understandable. It also contains pictures of Celine from the "Falling into you" album.I highly recommend this book for any budding musician or singer.

Ty has a easy to read and understand style that is always biblical. All of Ty's books are outstanding! This review could be for anyone of his 6 books. He also has them on Audio CD's in the form of sermons. You can get the CD's from his website online store at [...]. His books are well worth any price you might spend. Can you put a price on spiritual health?? I suggest them all!!

        5 out of 5 stars A treasure!.......2006-04-30

This outstanding book paints a picture of God's character that will take your breath away and leave you shaking your head in amazement! Truth is stranger than fiction! I see God and love through new eyes...yes, I see now what I never dreamed existed.
This book is a treasure in my library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Changed how I view God!.......2005-10-02

This book is incredible! I was extremely blessed by how Ty turns sometimes dry theology into vivid and enlightening truths. I especially love the poems at the beginning of each chapter :) This is one of the best books I've read, period. If you long for a deeper and more meaningful love relationship with God, this is the book for you. I've loaned it to some friends and I don't think I'll be getting it back for a while so I'm buying some more copies! Thanks Ty:)

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-01-01

This is such a wonderful book! Ty's earlier book, See With News Eyes, is probably still my favorite, but this one is not far behind. When I got to the end of this book, I just flipped back to the first page and started reading it over again! I've loaned an extra copy of mine out to a few people and sent it as a gift, as well. Also, it has a gorgeous cover and beautiful poems Ty has written to introduce each chapter. I highly recommend this book!
