Book Description
It's instant relief for when your 2-year-old is on the floor of the toy store, pitching a fit. Or when brother and sister discover that they can't stand each other. Or when your son can't say no to video games.
The Pocket Parent is, literally, a pocket-size book of tried-and-true advice, common sense, parental wisdom, and sanity. Written by two professionals who've reared six children between them and made a career out of helping others with parenting issues, this handy book will be a lifesaver for every parent of a 2-to-5-year-old. It begins with an overall view of the Pocket Parent approach to discipline. Based on unconditional love but firm limits, and aimed at keeping the child's dignity and self-esteem intact, here are strategies that include "I" statements, modeling, family meetings, and "one word" requests. Once the ground rules are set, the guide moves to an A-to-Z compendium of common problems. Just look it up-Anger, Bad Words, Biting, Chores, Doctor Visits, Fears at Night, Lying, Separation Anxiety-and find the "Sanity Savers" list of suggestions, easy-to-follow bullets, anecdotes, and more.
For the bag, glove compartment, backpack, or shelf in the kitchen, it's there for you whenever you need it.

Parenting, not problem solving.......2007-10-08
This is a book of parenting advice, not problem solving advice. I was looking for creative ideas for how to keep my toddler from screaming when I wash his hair, or, as another reviewer noted, how to get him to quit picking his nose. I think most people who would be interested in this book are beyond the diaper bag stage, and I don't know in whose pocket it would fit. The book does contain good advice about setting limits, respecting the child, and modeling appropriate behavior - pretty standard stuff for 21st century parents. I will use it as a reference book, but you won't see me whipping it out in the middle of Wal-Mart.
Wish I got it when I had my first born:).......2007-05-28
I love this book:) I wish I have it when I had my first born although he is 5 now but I am encouraged to buy this book after noticing that my second child is strong will and stubborn than her brother, all my strategies with my eldest won't work on her so I desperately need help. Thank goodness with this book it saves my sanity! I like that you don't need to read it from the beginning to end instead you can just look at the topic you need, most likely work like a dictionary but with really useful advise and example. I highly recommend this book, a must for every mother or parents.
All the parenting info you need.......2007-03-20
I love this book so much, I got rid of most of my other parenting books and just use this one. The cool thing about it is it's indexed so that the main things you need to get advice on are easy to find as problems/challenges happen. Potty training? Flip through the book and find the header and there you are. Hitting. Sleep. Easy and fast.
Practical.......2007-03-10
A good book with some practical advice, however, more topics could have been covered. Example: How to break your preschooler from picking his/her nose!
Good book if you just need some quick advice..........2007-02-13
This is a good book if you just need some quick advice. It reads easy, and it's simple to find the section you need.

Adorable.......2007-06-30
I bought this for my daughter's first Valentine's Day. Then and now (she's now 3), she loves the chunky cover, the stiff pages, and the big, cartoony illustrations.
Great book for babies, but toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy it, too. I find I frequently buy it for new moms and dads.
Sweet, Sweet, Sweet!.......2007-06-18
This is the kind of book that tugs at a parent's heartstrings, and can even produce a tear or two. The rhyming story and sweet illustrations tell of the kind of love a child receives only from their parents - love of every piece of the child, love through every mood of the child, love of seeing a child actively being a child (running, giggling, walking, etc.), a love that can sometimes feel overwhelming. We started reading this book to our child when she was an infant, and she still loves it at age three. Like other reviewers, I interact with my child while reading the book, making the story all the more fun to tell.
I Love you Through and Through.......2007-06-12
What a great interactive book. My grandson loves it. I like to buy it for a gift, it is always well received. One of my favorites!!!
LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-06-08
This book was given to my son as a Christmas gift from his Godmother. My entire family loves it... we read it together almost every night before bed. I now order it from Amazon whenever I need to send a gift to a child in our family. As an elementary school teacher, when it comes to inspiring a love of reading in young children, you can't beat a book that your kids want to read again and again and again and again!
Appealing to both parents and babies.......2007-05-13
My nine-month-old LOVES this book. It might be the musicality, the sweet illustrations, or the opportunity for interaction (i.e., "your top side" gets her a head rub). Whatever the reason, she goes back to this book over and over again.
I like it because of the simple, sweet message. Our precious little ones are never too young to hear that we love them "through and through," no matter what. It is a simple, reassuring gem that cannot be read too often.
It is no surprise that the publisher is Scholastic. They continually publish high quality children's materials. This book is a must for every little one's library!

Huge help to my daughter with OCD.......2006-09-07
My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9. Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book. We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifc books. The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process. By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions. Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context. Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.
Excellent Book.......2004-09-16
I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists. Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it. I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.
A Must read for Parents helping their child deal with Anxiet.......2004-04-26
I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them) helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety.
a must for anyone dealing with an anxious child.......2003-10-27
The Anxiety Cure for Kids is an important resource for any parent or mental health professional in dealing with an anxious child. The suggested strategies for handling the "dragon" are very helpful and are easily understood. This book is user friendly.

3rd book in the Heart of Texas series.......2005-11-17
Unfortunately, I haven't read the first two books, and while this story certainly can stand alone, there were many interesting secondary characters carried over from the previous novels. It would have been infinitely more enjoyable to experience if I had read the series in sequence. (1. Lonesome Cowboy, 2. Texas Two-Step, 3. Caroline's Child, 4. Dr. Texas, 5. Nell's cowboy and 6. Lone Star Baby).
Caroline has an adorable daughter named Maggie, whose paternity has been a well-guarded secret over the 5 years since her birth. Instead of petty gossip or outcasting as one might expect, this warm-hearted community has embraced Caroline and Maggie, becoming quite protective of them. Grady, a rough around the edges rancher, realizes that his feelings for them has moved swiftly from platonic friendship to love. However, he must win the heart of the child, who prefers his fun-loving but highly irresponsible brother, in order for the relationship between him and Caroline to succeed.
Debbie Macomber is a master at making a community come alive. The reader is drawn directly into the town and becomes totally immersed in the setting, and personally involved with the characters as though these are old friends. I love the attention to detail, the characterizations, the interactions and friendships.
Continuing story in series is great- can't wait for last one.......1998-06-14
By the time you read Caroline's child, you are completely familiar with this community and it's many members. No characters from the first books in the series are dropped so it's like visiting family members and hearing the latest news about their lives. Debbie Macomber is a prolific writer that never looses any power in her ability to tell a good, solid story and get you involved in the life of her characters. Debbie Macomber has been one of my favorite writers for a long time. Her sense of humor is well evident in this book and the other books in the series. It seems silly to sit in your chair and while you read you find yourself laughing, crying, sighing at the romance, or smiling with joy along with the characters but you do....not only in Caroline's Child but in the entire series. Brava!

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book!.......2007-03-07
Before you read What Ever Happened to Janie, I suggest that you read the Face on the Milk Carton first. Because every thing that happened in the Face on the Milk Carton continues in What Ever Happened to Janie.
Following the events in the Face on the Milk Carton, Janie is forced to live with a family she didn't know or love in New Jersey and she can't have any contact with her other family or friends for three months.
I personally love real life stories and that is why I enjoyed this book so much because it held my interest and it had many twists.
Even though I enjoyed this book I found the first one to be more existing and interesting.
How I felt about "Whatever Happened to Janie".......2006-12-19
Have you ever seen the pictures of the children on the milk cartons and thought glad that has not happened to me? What if you saw your own picture? Would you believe that it was true? These are just a few of the difficult questions that Janie was faced with. Now Janie is trying to figure out who is lying, the milk carton or her "parents".
Thankfully to relieve her mind somewhat Revee is there to help. Revee is the boy next door, literally. Janie is head over heels for Revee her long time friend neighbor. Revee is very understanding but also is older and wanting to do more than just talk. Revee is taking Janie's feelings into consideration, for now.
I really enjoyed the book and thought that it was well written. What I mean by this is that it gave you the right clues at the right times but never gave too much away at the wrong times. Along with this, I found it to be suspenseful because of the odd placed clues. I thought that the book had a great tragedy line that gave it a very good base. I whinded off the base well in specific details. The book definitely had a good ending. It really laves you hanging wanting to read the sequels
I can not personally relate to Janie. Although, I have been in situations where I am very confused and I am thankful for whatever shoulder I have to lean on until I am balanced on my own feet. I also worry a bunch. Thankfully my worries are not as extreme as Janie's. Now the questions that Janie is crossing are becoming much more complex and unfortunately so are the answers.
whatever happened to janie?.......2006-10-28
Whatever Happended to Janie is a great book. One day at lunch Janie took a drink of milk and saw her face on the milk carton which caused her to have all these visions, about her past. When she had to go and live with her birth family she couldnt ajust becuase the family that raised her was amazing and she missed them very much. How will she live with these strangers who want to be a "whole" family again? Readers will love Janie and feel her pain.
Whatever Happened to Janie?.......2006-10-20
Whatever Happened to Janie?
By: C. Copeland
This book is about a girl named Janie who was kidnapped from her parents when she was three. Janie was forced to go back to her real parents. How will she react? She did not work well with her birth parents, the Springs. The main reason was that she was an only child at her old "home", but here she had four brothers and sisters. They were: Stephen(17 years old), Jodie(16 years old), and Brendan and Brian(11 years old). The Springs thought that Janie would come back easily, but she missed her old life. The Springs finally let her go back to her old home because they loved her. I loved this book because it was so real, there was a very interesting blend of characters, and it leaves you on the edge of your seat.
This book is so real because it overwhelms the reader with detail. For example, at the beginning of the book, when it described the characters, I could picture them perfectly in my mind. The emotion of this book is also incredible. This is one of my favorite books because of this.
I think this book has a very interesting blend of characters because everything was different. For example, Stephen dislikes Janie and Jodie just wants to be friends with her, but Janie won't give her a chance. The twins are more background with mixed feelings.
This book leave you on the edge of your seat by leaving mysteries so you will be led into the next book. For example, it leaves the mystery of were and what her kidnapper is doing.
I loved this book because it had a very interesting blend of characters, it was very real, and the book leaves you on the edge of your seat. If you have read The Face on the Milk Carton, I would highly recommend this book.
A complicated journey.......2006-05-24
Although written for adolescents, this is a worthwhile read for adults. The story of Janie/Jennie and those who love her clearly describes the ambivalence, confusion and challenges of honoring and integrating the feelings and needs of two different but good families. From a professional's perspective, I itched to have a solid therapist intervene and help everyone involved work through this lengthy process that can be almost impossible to negotiate independently. Along with "A Face on the Milk Carton" this book would provide great classroom and dinner table conversation on a multitude of real issues that we all face today.

Book Description
No one ever really paid close attention to the faces of the missing children on the milk cartons. But as Janie Johnson glanced at the face of the ordinary little girl with her hair in tight pigtails, wearing a dress with a narrow white collar--a three-year-old who had been kidnapped twelve years before from a shopping mall in New Jersey--she felt overcome with shock. She recognized that little girl--it was she. How could it possibly be true?
Janie can't believe that her loving parents kidnapped her, but as she begins to piece things together, nothing makes sense. Something is terribly wrong. Are Mr. and Mrs. Johnson really Janie's parents? And if not, who is Janie Johnson, and what really happened?
Customer Reviews:
Missing.......2007-10-01
On milk carton is missing child for many years and it is her on it. she not understand and she was shock. she has somethings that not relate her to the family she is living with. she think the fact that family she live with is might kinapped her from. the family tell her the truth and it never confirm the fact she is kidnappped.
The Face on the Milk Carton.......2007-09-02
This believable book starts off with the surreal experience of seeing yourself on a missing children's ad! The story is set in high school when, one average day, 16 year old Janie sees herself on the back of a milk carton. This discovery changes how she feels about everything in her life. Janie suspects her parents of not being her parents, but then who are? The Face on the Milk Carton is a story about the secrets we keep, and the secrets we share. It is about the meaning of parents, friendship and her first real boyfriend, the boy next door. The book covers a wide range of issues that could lead to wonderful discussions; high school, girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, what it means to be a father, or a mother, what families will do for one another... Do you think Janie's life would have been better if she had stayed with her biological parents? Will Janie's parents face charges of abduction? Should they? What is the responsibility of people in this situation? The whole issue of cults comes up, what defines a cult? Is there anything else Janie's parents could have done to help their daughter Hannah? The fairly irrational way Janie handles the information in the story is a little too perfect to be completely believable for me, but a teenager might be fine with it. I think Janie describing her parents as, "...tired and used-up looking..." was a little bizarre and unbelievable for a 16 year old to really understand that statement, sounded too grown up. However, the story itself is very inventive and interesting. Great twists and turns to keep you wondering what is going to happen next.
Great book.......2007-08-16
This is a great book and I recommend it to any one. I have a really cool set of characters (including Reeve who is my favorite) and an interesting plot. What happens in the book is that the main character in the story (Janie Johnson) finds a milk carton with a picture on it that she thinks is herself. With the help or her neighbor Reeve she starts trying to figure out if the little girl is really her. It's a really good book and I loved it and have read it lots of times.
A Familiar Face.......2007-08-14
I first became familiar with "The Face on the Milk Carton" when it came out 17 years ago. In terms of literature, this book is pure junior high bliss. This upcoming school year, I will be teaching this book to a junior high class and I am anxious to see if they will embrace the book as I did.
Janie recognizes the face on the milk carton as being familiar. While the story seems so obvious in the first few pages, it changes as new pieces of the puzzle are added. For a story targeted at young adults, I am amazed at how well put together this mystery is. The reader can really feel for Janie as he/she wonders how Janie's story will unfold. Yet even as the book ends, not all of the questions will be answered.
Cooney is among the best writers for young adults today. She seems to know what teenagers are/were like in the present and the 80/90's. I must admit that I am looking forward to reading "Whatever happened to Janie".
Love is in the book!!!!.......2007-05-16
"The Face on the Milk Carton" by Caroline B. Cooney is filled with love and adventure! It starts out with Janie at school eating lunch with her friends. Sarah-Charlotte has her milk and on the back of the milk there's always a picture of a missing child. Wait a minute, Janie remembers that dress. The one that's white with blue polka dots. Janie suddenly realizes that she might be kidnapped. I loved this book! I couldn't put it down! As soon as I finished I wanted the book to continue! Its sequel "Whatever happened to Janie" was the next one that I could read!
Janie is very adventurous in this book. She goes to New Jersey with Reeve, a boy she likes. They skip school to go there to see if she can find her real mother. Will Reeve get in trouble with is parents or will Janie get in trouble with her "parents?" Will she make it? Will she find her mother? What will happen? Find out when you read "The Face on the Milk Carton" by Caroline B. Cooney!

The discovery that her adoptive father has been secretly supporting Janie's kidnapper, Hannah, fills Janie with anger and loathing. True, Hannah is his daughter, but long ago she abandoned her parents for a cult, coming back only for a few hours to leave a 3-year-old child with them she claimed was their granddaughter. Janie grew up thinking they were her parents--until that day when her own face looked back at her from the milk carton. Now her father lies unconscious in the hospital, and Janie has found an address in his files that will lead her to the woman who decimated two families. With the reluctant help of Reeve and her brother Brian, Janie sets out to find the enigmatic Hannah and face her down with questions, even though she knows the answers may destroy them all.
Caroline Cooney is a master of the psychological page-turner, and here she pulls together all the threads of this emotionally complex story for a rousing finale to her most popular series. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell

stop at book two...or possibly three.......2007-08-29
I love face on the milkcarton. I loved the book as a kid, love the movie. This last book sucks. I enjoyed one and two. Book three adds nothing but has a bit of drama.
Book four has NOTHING!!!
It has no new plot, no new answers. It just exists. I do not understand why.
I gave this book two stars instead of zero because it is well written and the characters have a little more depth than in the previous books.
Warning -Spoiler ahead!!!
They (the kids) decide that the best answer to the whole Hannah problem is to give her money!!?? It makes no sense. That is the author's answer. To give us no answers. They don't ignore her, they don't find her, they don't turn her into the FBI, they send her a big fat check.
Lame!!! They do it so she has no more power over them! Huh? If they need to just drop it they could have. What an absolute waste of an intriging series.

TITLE OF REVIEW: The Last Mystery that concluded it all
Janie was absolutely speechless when she stumbled upon and read what was in a manila file folder. You see, her father was in the hospital and Janie was responsible for making sure that all the bills and things were paid on time. While looking for the bills, Janie found a folder about Hannah, Janie's kidnapper of last year. She has no idea her father was still in touch with Hannah Javensen. Hannah was Janie's father's real daughter. This fictional story mainly takes place in Colorado where her biological brother Steven lives while going to college although Janie lives in Connecticut.
I thought this was an excellent and exciting book. I felt this about the story because if was a little bit of a mystery but not gory or scary. I would recommend this story to any female middle school students. I enjoyed the exciting storyline with a mysterious twist and so would they. Not only do I think this because I am a girl in middle school but the story itself is written about a girl, her problems and how she handles them. A connection that I could make to the story is that a girl that lived in the same area as me was kidnapped but just like Janie Johnson was brought back to her family. As far as the style of the writing goes, I personally like stories where the main character is telling the story. I think that when a main character is telling their story it is more personal. The main surprise that held my interest the most was when Janie decided to go to Colorado and meet face to face with her kidnapper.
H.J........2007-02-23
Janie Johnson or Jennie Springs, has just discovered she was kidnapped by a woman named Hannah Javenson and given to her parents Miranda and Frank Javenson. They however, thought Janie was Hannah's child and agreed to protect her by raising the child when she fled west. Frank knew the truth about Janie, for he did the right thing and changed her name from Jennie to Janie and also changed there families last name from Javenson to Johnson to keep them safe. With all of these events happening, Janie's father Frank suffers a stroke and is hospitalized and is even put in intensive care for a little while also. When this happens Janie's mom tells her to go through her fathers paid bills cabinet and go through the file listed H.J. This file contained everything about Hannah Javenson. Opening this file and finding out her father had been supporting her kidnapper by giving her a check every month caused Janie to break down into tears in front of her brother, Brian, and her ex boy friend Reeve. Soon after she has a plan to find Hannah, for it just so happens she lives in Boulder, Colorado the exact place her brother Stephen goes to College. Janie's plan was to mail the check and stalk the post office until she came to retrieve her money and maybe she get to talk to Hannah and ask her all the questions running through her mind. Once in Colorado things don't go as planned and Reeve and Brian come up with the brilliant idea to leave her a note saying this is it you are now out of my life forever by leaving her all the rest of her ransom money, to disconnect her from the Johnson's for all the trouble she has caused. It turns out that Janie has now found her family, the right thing to do, and her way home. This novel was very mysterious a different suspense scene every page I turned, it made you want to continue reading until you knew it all.
Janie Johnson even after finding out who her real parents were, decided to stay with her criminal parents. After returning to her home in New Jersey, Janie felt uncomfortable like she was living with a bunch of strangers. Stephen felt she was a snobby, spoiled brat and the way she left just as quick as she came made his point correct. Janie gave them no chance even though she knew they loved her a lot when they barely knew her for more than a couple days. Janie also kept her kidnapped name Janie Johnson instead of true birth name Jennie Springs. To her brother Stephen that goes to show she really doesn't care to know what her real family is like.
Even when Janie knew Hannah kidnapped her she still felt the need to meet her to see how she appeared other than, "last seen flying west." After reading those intriguing paid bills files she still wanted to meet the woman who caused this chaos in her life. Janie felt the need to know the reason why she did it and why did she pick her. But in other senses, Janie wanted to shove her off a cliff to make her feel how much trauma her and both the Johnson and Spring family have gone through between the FBI to the court hearings.
Reeve tried his best to keep from hurting Janie or causing her any more grief than she has been through already. When Brian kept asking about the secret, H.J. file Reeve kept quiet and occupied Brian in order to take the stress off of Janie. When really he also wanted to know what was making Janie look so intense and full of questions. Also when Janie's dad was put into intensive care he offered to go with her to keep her company driving to the hospital considering the condition she was in, even after she said she would go solo. To get her mind off of the file he took her on a date or in his case a race to see him work at the pit stop and watch his car race. She enjoyed it and the race seemed to take her mind off of Hannah for the time being, and focus on the race and Reeve sweating as he changed tires.
What Janie Found, is a very suspenseful novel packed with mind tricks, character thoughts and emotions, and even a mere fright. Janie Johnson, a kidnapette, as Kathlene called her was put through a lot of trauma, from her two families, to the H.J. file, and to her father's stroke. She made the decision to try to find Hannah and not only give her the usual monthly check but also to ask her a few questions pertaining to her kidnapping. But Brian and Reeve discover a new plan to give Hannah the rest of her money and tell her that she is now excluded from there lives forever. Janie decides that she found the right thing to do, found her family, and her way home too.

What Janie Found.......2007-02-21
The main character in my book is Janie. The things I liked about Janie is that she is out going, once she puts her mind to something she goes after it until she figures outs it's wrong. The least thing I do not like about her is that she does not like to listen no matter what, and she acts like a snob through most of the book. If I compare my book to me, I would say we have no similarities. Throughout the book I was wondering would she ever find Hannah (the girl who took her from her real family)? Then once I got towards the end, I found out that she did not go and see Hannah because she began to ask questions like, "Am I like her? Do I want to go through life looking for my kidnapper?" And so she just gave up and did not search for her anymore. When I first started reading this book I did not like it because it was boring but until I got to the part about the folder that her dad has been keeping from her since she figured out she was kidnapped. She had been looking for her kidnapper for along time and it was there, right in front of her face. The part I liked most was when she and Reeve got back together because he made a mistake and wondered when he was going to be forgiven and it was killing him because it was taking so long .
I think people everywhere should read this book because it is really good but first I recommend you read the first 3 in the series or else you will be lost and it would be boring.

The Voice on the Radio.......2006-12-06
Janie and her sister, Jodie, and one of her twin brothers, Brian, went to Boston so Jodie can look at the college there for her. Reeve also went to that college and he DJ'd for a college radio station. He tells about Janie's personal life and how he felt and about her kidnapping. Janie heard one of his "janies" that he was telling and it happened to be the worst one he told about her. Janie and Reeve broke up and Jodie was sad because she was hoping to go there so she and Reeve could see Janie when she came to visit and Reeve could also help her find her way around the college and the dorms. Janie visited her real family in New Jersey and she soon began to feel close to them and the only person she told about her and Reeve was her real mother. In the end, Janie became friends with Reeve, but it didn't mean much to her.
Betrayal is on the air..........2006-11-05
After having read the two books leading up to The Voice on the Radio, The Face on the Milk Carton and Whatever Happened to Janie, I am still eager for more of Caroline B. Cooney's Janie Series! Each book is better than the one before! As "Voice of Youth Advocates" says Voice on the Radio is "a real page-turner" the book lives up to its multi-genre quality of mystery, romance, and drama including many climaxes in the story. These numerous moments of intesity get my heart pounding and my eyes opened wide. Just when you think poor Janie Johnson has found time to breathe, betrayal from a loved one catches her off-gaurd. Fortunately, Janie Johnson or "Jennie Spring" has two loving families to help her through it all, but how much can her families take? Sooner or later Janie will have no where to run to or a place to hide...
The voice on the Radio.......2006-10-12
Have you ever been betrayed by your best friend or boyfriend and felt like you could never forgive them? Well, this book is all about how Janie's boyfriend went to college to become a DJ for a radio station.
As time went on Janie's boyfriend started something that would make Janie very mad if she found out what exactly he was doing. He kept up the same thing and never thought she would figure it out, until she did.
I liked this book because it kept you on the edge of your seat most of the time and it gives good detail about everything. This book is very interesting and will make you want to read the rest of the book in the series!
Book Description
Dr. Patti Feuereisen has been working with teenage girls for twenty-five years and has been a pioneer in helping abused girls find their voices. What she discovered in listening to hundreds of girls was not only that sexual abuse of young girls is in fact epidemic, but if the abuse can be processed when girls are still young—in their teens and early twenties—remarkable healing can take place. Girls and young women who are given an opportunity to speak out will most often go on to thrive as adults; without such an opportunity the traumatic effects of their abuse will often continue to cause them difficulty long into adulthood.
Invisible Girls weaves together powerful first-person narratives with gentle guidance and seasoned insights to help girls through the maze of feelings that swirl around the abuse experience. This gives every young woman who struggles with the scars of sexual abuse the courage that comes from knowing that she is not alone, while other girls come out from behind the veil of secrecy to become vibrant, healthy, and whole.

Resourceful Book for Abused Teens.......2007-09-12
I am a clinical social worker in Louisiana. This book has been helpful for several of my clients. The book includes several girls' stories, which have helped to normalize my clients' experiences. It also includes a question/answer section that seems to cover many topics that teenage girls may be afraid to ask themselves. I also found the "Resource Center" at the end of the book helpful. Dr. Patti has a website and is resposive to questions via that site.
Terrific!.......2007-05-06
This is a wonderful and very helpful book. Dr. Patti is also a great person!

A special book just for girls!.......2006-07-31
This is a brilliant and inspiring book!! I would give it 6 stars. A big thank you to all the girls who came out with their stories about abuse, and a special thanks to Dr. Patti for her wonderful work. Her girlthrive website is also a great resource.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, survivor or not, we can learn so much from it and teach ourselves and others around us about awareness.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Social Worker's review.......2006-07-11
As an intern during graduate school, I worked with girls who had experienced sexual abuse/incest. In my attempt to read every book on the topic, I found Invisible Girls. I couldn't stop talking about it. I wanted all of my peers and colleagues to read it as well. This book is beginning to help me define my professional career path.
Superb resource for all - survivors and professionals.......2006-04-26
An excellent and invaluable resource to all who have been touched in any way by sexual abuse: this book is compassionate, insightful and healing in its portrayal and treatment of sexual abuse of children, adolescents and young women. The real-life experiences are presented in a way that is sensitive, thoughtful and wise. They will resonate with the experience of most anyone who has suffered the affliction and trauma of sexual abuse.
As a mature, adult male (in my 50's) who is the survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I was able to recognize my experience in the stories presented. Even more, it gave me the tools, skills and empathy to approach my sister who still suffered the debilitating effects of her own childhood experience of sexual abuse. This book and its treatment gave us both the courage and confidence to break free of the grip of secrecy so that we could approach our other siblings and begin a process of family healing.
Finally, as one who accompanies others as guide/director on their spiritual journeys -- I find this book invaluable - and highly recommend it as an insightful and practical aid in understanding and supporting those who struggle with the scars and unfreedom of sexual, physical and emotional abuse.
Book Description
Decades of research have proven the value of reading aloud to children, and the years between birth and age two are arguably the most crucial for language development. As a parent, it's important that you help your baby acquire the foundation they need to speak earlier, read on their own sooner, and benefit from an increased vocabulary and attention span.
Baby Read-Aloud Basics shows you how to establish an effective daily read-aloud routine to take charge of your baby's future understanding and success. Organized around the six stages of early language development from birth to age two, the book provides simple but effective techniques to help you:
* Make reading aloud an interactive experience--from intonation and speech patterns to gesture.
* Select what to read aloud by looking at how much the text of the book repeats, whether it rhymes, and the types of interactive elements it incorporates.
* Know when to read and how often in order to create a reading routine that's both enjoyable and effective.
* Ensure your baby gets the right amount of language from a nanny or a caretaker.
* Effectively incorporate reading in a bilingual home.
Filled with step-by-step instructions, scripted demonstrations, and a list of recommended titles,Baby Read-Aloud Basics gives you all the guidance and information you need to instill a lifelong love of reading and learning, and start your baby along on the road to success.

Somehow repetitive and not as complete as Reading with Babies, Toddlers, and Twos.......2007-07-11
When I purchased Baby Read-Aloud basics, I had already read Reading with Babies, Toddlers and Twos and was hoping to complement my reading on the subject of baby books and read-alouds. I personally thought this book was not as helpful or complete, nor did it have as many book suggestions as the first one mentionned above. Still, this book is pretty good. It gives a few suggestions of books for every baby stage, what to do with that book, reading techniques, literacy games, and contains some interviews with parents who went through the read-aloud from birth experience. It is kind of repetitive but easy to read and well organized.
Every parent shoud read this book,,,.......2007-07-05
This book is loaded with research that supports the claim that you should read to your baby. I knew it made a difference but to see the results of the numerous studies on the topic was shocking. I did not know it made that much of a difference. You owe it to your child to spend some time reading to them. In my opinion, if you want to make an impact on the life of your child, buy this book and read to your child! The book is a quick read and you do not even have to read the whole thing at once. Read the beginning and then read about the different stages as you are going through them. There are a ton of baby books out there (I know because I have bought them) but this one proves that by doing something as simple as reading can make a world of difference in the life of your child. It would also make an amazing baby shower gift, I will not go to another shower again without a copy if this for the parents.
A resource for all parents.......2007-03-07
Very well organized for parents with young children of all ages -- started our infant at one week and by week seven he was focusing on black and white book series and now at week 12 he is grabbing for pages and is truly engaged! As new parents we are excited to see him grow into each level of read aloud and enjoy spending this quality time together. Recommend this book highly as well as the the wonderful book recommendations that are provided by the authors.
Everyone will benefit!!!.......2006-10-22
What a great reading source!! I am a Mom of three children as well as a preschool teacher and have always made reading a priority at home and in the classroom. This book brings out the best research and useful information for both parents and teachers!!! Everyone should read it and put its practices to use. This is a wonderful publication!!!
This book is an eye opener! Just wonderful!.......2006-10-12
Of course it is a joy to sit with a child - a BABY - and read aloud! But this book sheds light on why and how to make it a daily, joyful experience. The research described explains how important the process is on so many different levels you might not have thought of. You can start before birth, for instance! The organization is very helpful, with specific books recommended for each stage of development and coordinated activities.
