Diane herself had changed from a bewildered schoolgirl, tragically orphaned, to a determined young woman of alluring charm and beauty. Now, leaving the cloistered life of her school, she has been brought to Daniel’s home with dreams of her own amid rumors and hints of scandal. But the legendary seducer seems to have other plans for Diane—and a secret about her lost past that he will do everything to keep: a secret that will put both their lives in jeopardy, even as the passion they have denied for so long threatens to break out of all control.

4 out of 5 stars I didn't want it to end........2007-07-16

You would have thought the cover of the Seducer was coated with sticky glue for all the success I had in putting this one down. I was immediately drawn into the story and held until the last page had been turned. Humor, intrigue, and heat between the sheets (leaves.... carriage seats....) kept the story moving. A hero with a few flaws, a few secrets and at times a bit of a dark side combined with a very likeable heroine to make this one must a read.

5 out of 5 stars Dark and Penetrating hero...WOW!.......2007-06-27

Daniel St. John is not the normal guardian. He is by no way related to Diane Albret. Nor does he ever explain why he is her ward in the first place. In between the steaming sensuality of these two characters, there is an unfolding mystery..leaving this to be a captivating and entertaining romance.

2 out of 5 stars Saving-the-hero's-soul routine --- blah.......2007-06-15

THE SEDUCER is an out-and-out Heroine-Saving-the-Hero's-Soul routine, and I just don't enjoy those... even if it is written by my favorite author in this genre. Despite having just read Chadwick's LORDS OF THE WHITE CASTLE which had me screaming to its hero to let go of his rivalry, I wasn't convinced THE SEDUCER's hero Daniel letting go of his plot for revenge was entirely appropriate. I felt that Daniel St. John was way too pining, too unmanned by the end, and that's not something I'm used to from Hunter's heroes. The ultimatum our heroine Diane lays down to coerce Daniel into abandoning his plot for revenge as a price for her love came off avariciously, especially considering everything he's just shared about all the people that died -- including his mother -- mainly because of the villain.

THE SEDUCER goes to extraordinary lengths trying to paint Daniel St. John in a very evil, dark light. In the beginning, he's referred to as the Devil Man. I didn't really see it. Definitely, there are things Daniel does to ruin the men indirectly responsible for killing many people including his parents, and crippling his sister. The book and his sister Jeanette would have us believe the things he does to ruin the men eats away at Daniel's soul. Huh? It's not like Daniel killed anyone, he just ruined them -- and deservedly so! I didn't buy the Bad-Boy act, he's not really all that bad. Hypocritically, the qualities that make him dark, mysterious and attractive to our heroine in the beginning - his cold demeanor, eyes of fire, etc. -- are the very qualities which imbue him with a single-minded, soul-eating purpose for revenge. So the book's crux aims to erase the very qualities in Daniel which attract our heroine to him in the first place, mainly because those qualities supposedly strip him of his soul.

The ending transforms Daniel into a love-sick lapdop. Daniel chooses love and agrees to abandon a revenge plot which spins of its own accord at that point. Melodramatic nonsense I tell'ya! And not fun to read at all. After Daniel chooses our heroine, the book notes how he can't fight with swords anymore, how during the climactic duel with the villain his pistol wavers and cannot come to kill the man he's pursued all these years. During the climactic duel, Daniel resorts himself to death and he cannot call forth the cold hatred for the villain anymore. So basically, he's completely unmanned. Is this supposed to be romantic? Emasculating a hero so he cannot do what needs to be done during the critical moment? I mean Daniel already loves Diane beyond measure, why not just allow the hero to call forth that fury and hatred for the critical moment, the fury which gives him his strength? Not to be. I wonder why Jeanette didn't go to the first arranged duel which Daniel retreats from. All the characters arrive at the final, climactic duel to cheer on the hero who cannot shoot his pistol because he's floating on clouds for love of his heroine. The end inundates its readers with Daniel's love-sick, pining introspection.

Looking ahead for a future with love is all well and good, but there's also merit in repaying debts and addressing the past which always tends to catch up on you. Despite all the pining introspection Daniel spews at the end, I felt even if the villain Tyndale had let Daniel be after Daniel chooses love, the past would still hang over him like a dark cloud in some way. I don't think it's possible to purge a past such as Daniel's 100% as many saving-the-hero's-soul-from-revenge stories would have us believe. If for nothing else, wouldn't it be justified to bring down a villain with an unhealthy appetite to seduce and ruin virgins? Surely the heroine can't object to that! But alas, she does here...

Longer than most Hunter novels by sheer page count, this 419-page paperback spends an inordinate amount of time setting up characters for future books. Of those that we're introduced to, only Adrian seemed interesting. Dante is one character I don't want to read about, wonder if his book is any good.

The beginning was good, the humorous exchange between Diane & Daniel at Diane's school hooked me right away. The middle parts of the novel weren't bad, albeit much slower as we're slowly introduced to other characters and the main plot. The ending -- well didn't care for it much at all.

I'm reminded of other romances with heroines saving heroes from revenge plots and this book is better than Medeiros' THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST (*), but not as enjoyable as Foley's DEVIL TAKES A BRIDE (***).

The Story.

Thirty-two year-old tall, dark and "incredibly handsome" Daniel St. John is a shipper, a man of his own fortune bent on a plot for revenge. Although the majority of the book keeps its readers in the dark about the details of Daniel's multi-layered and mysterious past, it's clear he nourishes single-minded purpose for revenge from the onset. His sister Jeanette's crippled and untenable condition only confirm our suspicions regarding Daniel's goals and intentions.

"Lovely", dark-eyed twenty year-old Diane Albret seeks answers about who she is and where she came from. All she knows is that the Devil Man -- Daniel -- takes care of her finances so she may continue at the school in Rouen. She's plagued by fractured, splintered memories of a past which grows blurry.

For as clever and resourceful as Daniel is made out to be, I don't understand his plot to eliminate his ultimate nemesis and villain, famed gunshot Andrew Tyndale, a marquess' younger brother. Daniel's scheme is quite laughable actually. Idiotically, Daniel plans on using Diane's virginity as a means to lure Tyndale and then call out Tyndale in a duel. So you plan on placing an innocent girl in danger so you can honorably try to kill the best pistol around? Daniel claims he won't allow any harm come to Diane, but that's B.S., you can't control everything. The book painstakingly notes Tyndale's superior pistol abilities compared to Daniel so I was waiting for some contingency plan on Daniel's part when the duel he schemes to concoct actually takes place. Nope, no contingency plan. [laughs] Essentially, the scheme was to lure a superior gunshot like Tyndale into a duel so he can kill you. [more laughs] What am I missing here?

The romance was OK, but tainted by the ultimatum Diane lays down towards the end and Daniel's very emasculated status. For the first time in a Madeline Hunter novel, I actually skipped the love scene at the end following Daniel's capitulation to Diane's demands for being together. Just seemed empty by that point. Daniel squirms, pines and wilts too much at the end, mainly because of a drowning love. He couldn't just do what needed to be done. Diane makes Daniel promise to back down from the first duel. He happily obliges in return for sex. Even after learning how sadistic the villain Tyndale can be and of all the horrible things he's done to Daniel and his family, she makes him abandon his plight for justice as a price to be together. Daniel merrily consents.

There's other connections and characters which makes things vaguely interesting: the scientist Gustave, Diane's father and of course members of the Dueling Society like Adrian and Vergil (Adrian seems the most interesting from members of the club).

Overall, the most tiresome Madeline Hunter novel I've read to date.

3 out of 5 stars Heroine was a bit weak, but improves at the end.......2007-05-13

I totally didn't like the first half of the novel - I don't object to the guardian/ward setup but in this case he was authoritarian, uncommunicative, unfeeling, didn't seem to care about her wishes and was using her as a pawn in his game of revenge. She sort of went along with it, although she was trying to find her family but it seemed a bit half hearted. Kind of reminded me of reading Barbara Cartland in high school (but...thank...god...there...were...no...pauses...). It did improve after a while, she shows more independence and runs away; he realizes his feelings for her. I thought Hunter's 'The Saint' was much better.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written...hard to put down.......2006-11-04

Daniel St. John is a man haunted by a past that refuses to let him go. He is driven by revenge; to repay a great wrong inflicted on his family many, many years ago. Into his plan steps Diane Albret, a girl grown into a woman who was left in Daniel's care. Daniel needs Diane to lure one of his enemies into his web but his plans go awry when he falls in love with her.

Unwilling to risk hurting Diane, Daniel falls back on a plan already in place: to ruin his enemies financially, but it turns disastrous when his plot is discovered. In retaliation, Daniel's enemies kidnap Diane and attempt to use her to destroy him. Out of options, Daniel willingly confronts his enemies in an attempt to save Diane, knowing that his life no longer matters if she is killed.

I just finished reading this book. The remnant aftertaste of it still flows through my emotions and my thoughts. It's a really great book. The author took great care to allow each subplot to unfold with enough care so that it didn't overwhelm the main storyline: that of the romance between Daniel St. John and Diane Albret.

The story held my attention because the way it was written didn't reveal the reasons behind Daniel's plans or the secrets he held about Diane's past. It was brilliantly written, like a gift unwrapped one seal at a time, one layer at a time, until what's before you is this beautifully woven story that is so poignant, so suspenseful, you're left wondering why you never guessed the entirety of it in the first place.

I highly recommend it.

Thomas Capano was a powerful man in Delaware. The golden child of a respected immigrant family, he had everything most people could ever hope for: money, a family he adored, widespread respect and admiration. His former lover Anne Marie Fahey was never that lucky. Her youth was a seemingly endless string of heartbreak, disappointment, and misery. Somehow, though, she managed to get through it all--her mother's death, abuse from her alcoholic father, devastating poverty--and make a niche for herself as a trusted secretary to Delaware's governor. Thirty years old, she had a whole new life ahead of her. She'd met a young man whom she hoped to someday marry and start a family with, and she finally seemed able to put her past behind her.

But Thomas Capano did not want to be put behind anyone. It was his sheer arrogance--the arrogance that couldn't accept rejection, that couldn't fathom being caught and convicted--that killed Anne Marie Fahey, and Ann Rule's telling of Fahey's story reveals the mind of a true monster. Capano's narcissism prevented him from feeling anything for anyone but himself, but the gripping narrative of And Never Let Her Go is surely the story that Fahey and her family would have wanted to be told. --Lisa Higgins

Book Description

From America's most celebrated true-crime writer comes the heartbreaking real-life drama of a doomed young woman hopelessly trapped in a web of sexual intrigue, political manipulation, and emotional deception by her charming and successful -- but ultimately deadly -- lover.

The author of fifteen New York Times national bestsellers, Ann Rule, a former Seattle policewoman, has researched thousands of homicides and understands every facet of murder investigation. Now, in the most complex and shocking book of her long career, she delves into the motivation that drove a seemingly successful man to kill, and she explores heretofore unknown aspects of a fatal affair between a beautiful young woman who moved confidently in the heady world of the upper echelons of government and a widely admired millionaire attorney who was an immensely popular political figure.

On June 27, 1996, thirty-year-old Anne Marie Fahey, who was the scheduling secretary for the governor of Delaware, had dinner with a man she had been having a secret affair with for more than two years. "Tommy" Capano, forty-seven, was perhaps the most politically powerful man in Wilmington. Son of a wealthy contractor, former state prosecutor, partner in a prestigious law firm, advisor to governors and mayors, Tom Capano had a soft-spoken and considerate manner that endeared him to many. Although recently estranged from his wife, he was a devoted father to his four beautiful young daughters, the trusted son of his widowed mother, and the backbone of his extended family. But sometime after 9:15 that night when Anne Marie and Tom left a Philadelphia restaurant, something terrible happened to Anne Marie. It would be forty-eight hours before her brothers and sisters realized that she had disappeared entirely.

Ann Rule brilliantly traces the lives of both Fahey and Capano as she discloses the intimate details of their ill-fated bonding. A vulnerable, trusting woman becomes spellbound by a charming, duplicitous married man, and what begins as a seemingly unremarkable affair is slowly transformed into an obsessive, convoluted, and deadly relationship.

Through her impeccable research, Rule peels away layer after layer of deception to reveal a man who lived a secret life for decades, a man so greedy that he would sacrifice anyone to gain what he desired. One of his many mistresses -- all of whom were unknown to one another -- was Deborah MacIntyre, an attractive and wealthy member of one of Wilmington's oldest families and an administrator of an elite private school. She, too, would become part of the mystery surrounding Anne Marie's disappearance.

As three prominent families are destroyed to satisfy one man's jealous obsessions, this unfathomable tragedy becomes a tale that few would believe if it were presented as fiction. Shockingly, it is all true. Destined to become a classic,...And Never Let Her Go is a riveting account of forbidden love and murder among the rich and powerful, and a chilling insight into the evil that sometimes hides behind even the most charming façade.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gripping.......2007-10-03

Like most all of Ann Rule's true crime novels, this was absolutely absorbing. Very thorough research made for an indepth reading about the lives of everyone involved in the case, everyone except - Kay Ryan Capano, the wife of the murderer. Throughout the whole book, I found myself asking, "What about Kay? What did she know and when?" I suppose it isn't the fault of the author if it is because Kay wouldn't grant her a real interview, but I just found it to be a major missing component of the story. I finished this book feeling so angry with the narcissistic Capano family.

5 out of 5 stars Very Intriguing Tale of a Powerful Man Who Just Couldn't Let Go!.......2007-06-25

I always wonder what sparks the interest of Ann Rule to pick her book topics. This case is set in Delaware not her Beloved Pacific Northwest. The characters involved include a pretty young Irish American woman named Anne Marie Fahey and her lover, Thomas Capano, an Italian American powerful lawyer in Wilmington, Delaware. As the story unfolds, the readers will learn about Fahey and Capano's childhoods, their lives, and the events that led up to Anne's disappearance, murder, and her remains forever out to sea off the New Jersey coast. None of her remains have been found and Capano is sitting on Delaware's death row. When Anne decided enough was enough, Capano couldn't take her rejection and killed her.

5 out of 5 stars JSaunders.......2007-02-09

This is a well-crafted and beautifully narrated story that was eventually made into a TV mini series (no surprise that the book is better). I work in Wilmington and witnessed first hand the media circus during the court proceedings. This is an excellent book because Ann Rule takes you by the hand and escorts you through the hype and into the heart of the story. She also effectively presents the history of Wilmington in such a way as to prep the reader for a gulp of "inside knowledge" of a small, close-knit town. It's a great read that's easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Ann Rule's Best To Date.......2007-02-08

This is the best book about the Capano case I have ever read and it is in my opinion, Ann Rule at her finest. Rule paints a very vivid picture of the life and times of beautiful Anne-Marie Fahey and prominent Wilmington attorney, Tom Capano. Rule makes her subjects so real (and they are) come alive on every page and she does a great job of describing the life and culture of where the story takes place in Wilmington, Delaware. The story ends with Anne-Marie's tragic murder by Tom Capano who was once a pillar of his community. A very gripping and compelling true crime read. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars a cautionary tale.......2006-12-05

Ann Rule is my all-time favorite true crime author. The reason I like her writing so much is that she really gets inside the minds of the victim, the perpetrator, and even their families and friends. What made the victim vulnerable? What made the murderer commit such a dramatic and final act? Ann Rule draws a very sympathetic picture of 30-year-old Anne Marie Fahey. Anne Marie survived a truly horrible childhood, made it through college, and had a great job in politics. She was carrying on a dallianace with Thomas Capano, a rich, successful, and married attorney. She tried to end the relationship after meeting a nice young executive whom she hoped to someday marry. But she carried scars from her childhood that kept her life from being perfect and which put Thomas Capano in a position of power over her. Reading the book, I felt like I knew Anne Marie. But Capano's need to maintain control over the several lovers he kept on the side still seems inexplicable. Though seemingly superficial and shallow, he was not a love 'em and leave them philanderer. Not able to let go, he sacrificed his marriage and his wonderful career for control over these young women. What in his background made him do this? A fascinating story, and a cautionary tale for women looking for the perfect man.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nothing spectacular about this one.......2006-11-03

I'm not sure I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This typical storyline has been done over and over again that I've grown a bit tired of it. You know what I mean: the consummate bad boy, whom all the mothers warned their daughters about and all the wives, widows and spinsters dream of, meets a raving beauty who tames his wild heart. He fights a losing battle against his overwhelming attraction to her but eventually succumbs to the fate destiny has wrought for him.

Of course, I was well aware of this going in to the book. I picked up it up only because I'm currently reading all of Madeline Hunter's books and I'd have to say that this one is her weakest. The characters were okay, albeit a bit unconvincing in their roles. The storyline was very predictable and the supposed attraction between Bride and Ewan seemed too contrived.

Overall, I'd say you'd probably end up skimming through most of the story if you decide to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A pure delight...thoughtful, sensual and very satisfying.......2006-04-09

This is a smart, well written, and satisfying story with interesting leads, a good romance and a compelling mystery. Ewan McLean, carefree lover and man-about-town, promises his uncle the earl, on his deathbed, that he will help the family of a man whom the uncle ruined years before. This takes Ewan, now the new earl, to a remote part of Scotland where he learns that the man has died and left behind four daughters. Ewan and the eldest daughter Bride, a passionate and self-reliant Scottish beauty, are immediately and intensely attracted to one another. They have several intimate encounters, but Ewan does not allow things to go too far because he feels responsible for Bride - responsibility being a rather new concept for Ewan. The sisters are barely making ends meet, so Ewan offers to move them to a comfortable home in Glasgow, but they stubbornly refuse. They insist they can get by on the money they earn from engraving prints from templates, a trade learned from their father. Ewan nonetheless arranges for generous trusts for the three younger sisters (Bride refuses one for herself), and reluctantly returns to London, afraid that he will compromise Bride if he stays.

Weeks pass and Ewan cannot get Bride out of his mind. Then suddenly she appears on his doorstep, sisters in tow, having been evicted from their home. What Ewan does not know is that Bride has another reason for coming to London. She is trying to find out who stole her late father's templates for forged banknotes, before she and her sisters can be implicated. What Bride does not know is that Ewan, an expert on engravings, is investigating reports of forged banknotes on behalf of the government. With deception and intrigue swirling around them, can true love prevail for this passionate pair?

This appealing story is well-paced and held my interest from start to finish. Ewan and Bride are an unusual and refreshing couple, for each has a background that is somewhat imperfect, and yet they are clearly perfect for one another. Ewan is a collector of erotic art and has a liking for all things sensual; Bride does not reject out of hand his rather unconventional hobby, but instead has a healthy curiosity about it. Both have great appreciation for the other's qualities, and they truly connect as soul mates on a physical, emotional and intellectual level. The story has many funny moments as Ewan tries to hide his irregular activities from the prying eyes of Bride's sisters and chaperone, all while they are living under his roof. The dialogue is thoughtful and intelligent, and the romance sensual and satisfying. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Another lush historical by Madeline Hunter.......2005-09-03

Courtesy of Love Romances Reviews

Ewan McLean is a grand seducer of women. All he cares about is enjoying the pleasures of the flesh and adding to his collection of erotic art. Until he grants the death bed wish of his uncle to right an old wrong, that is. Now Ewan is off to Scotland to grant this request and his life changes abruptly as a result.

Bride Cameron is the sole support of her family that consists of herself and three younger sisters. They make their living by doing engravings using their father's old equipment, and by a secret mission that could get them into big trouble if ever discovered. The last thing she needs is an overbearing man coming into their home with the strange idea that he should support them.

Sparks fly between Ewan and Bride from their first meeting, and those sparks grow into a burning desire as they journey back to London to try and track down the person who is forging money and priceless works of art. As Bride works her way in to Ewan's heart, he begins to wonder if his life would be better with her in his bed... as his wife.

Madeline Hunter has written another lush historical to delight her many fans. In this story she even gets to demonstrate her remarkable knowledge of art, which is the focal point of her career outside of her books. It is more than evident that she knows her stuff where the history of the art of printing is concerned. Readers will love to see the results of the compilation of both of her careers in this book.

Readers who have read previous books in the Seducer series will remember the carefree Ewan. It is delightful to see how he grows and changes throughout this story. Bride is a force to be reckoned with as well, with a fiery temperament to match her flame-colored hair. Ewan has met his match in Bride and watching the dance of desire between them is fascinating.

The plot of the forged art and money is brilliantly woven throughout the story, adding to the romance found in this tale and showcasing both Ewan and Bride's considerable knowledge of art. There are also enough sub plots to intrigue readers on many different levels. Readers will also relish the opportunity to visit some old friends from previous books in the series.

As always, Ms. Hunter has penned a passionate love story, rich in historical detail, that is bound to leave fans, be they new or old, longing for the next book by this talented author.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best among Hunter's latest!.......2005-07-17

As I said, this is one of the best of Hunter's latest books. Her first 3 are the best I have ever read. Back to this one: I loved Ewan's sensual nature, and how both were very passionate. I enjoyed the story surrounding their love affair. Many men could learn how to make love by reading Hunter's books. She is the best I have read at describing the intimacy. She writes a good story surrounding the intimacy. You can count on her to write at a mature level. I did find that "Ewan" was not an attractive name, and did not fit this smoldering, sensual, man.

1 out of 5 stars Save time and money. Skip this book........2005-06-28

I don't recall the author's other books being quite as bad as this one. I almost didn't make it to the end, but I did--and save yourself the trouble--it wasn't worth it. The hero and heroine were amoral, "do as I say and not as I do" characters who saw nothing wrong with orgies, pornography, or forgery.
And what was with the heroine's other family members? An aunt/servant(?) who looked the other way no matter what her nieces did, including sexual misconduct and forgery. One sister who lived in la-la land except when she chose to come out of it and make perfect sense. One sister who was a cross-dresser. And the youngest sister who was constantly being pulled out of trouble if the others cared enough to check on her. I could go on with the problems in the book, but I think you get the gist.

3 out of 5 stars Liked it for the mystery not the romance.......2007-07-31

I thought the characters were rather bland, however I thouroughly enjoyed the mystery sub plot.
Lady M. is your typical Regency lady, who at first denys her attraction to the hero Nathaniel, only to succumb to his charms. Oh, she did sleep with him at an orgy 1 month before the book starts. The books title 'A lady of sin' is quite misleading, because there isn't any sizzle in her character. Nathaniel stands out more, and his potrayal as a defense lawyer is nicely done. I like how Hunter shows how out of place he would have been at that time. Also, since he is such a gentleman, Lady M comes across a bit shrewish at times, but I have resigned myself to that expectation in regency romance.
All in all, not a bad read.

5 out of 5 stars Her best so far! Steamy, passionate and so cleaver. Loved it!.......2007-03-15

Loved it! Very sensual, passionate romance with great sparks. One of my favorite M. Hunter books so far. (I've read about half of them.) I love her writing style. Her books really make me feel like I am there with her characters. She writes such vivid details about the era and surroundings, but never so much that it over powers the story. She does a wonderful job building the passion and a deep relationship between hero and heroine too. Highly recommend to any historical romance fan.

Lady of Sin by Madeline Hunter is in-depth story of Charotte a widow and the man she hates (or not) Nathaniel Knightridge. Charotte and Nathaniel have been fighting for years but have one night of sin that turns them into friends. They need to solve a mystery and over time they find love. LORD OF SIN and LADY OF SIN are spin-offs of the Seducer series.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and a quick read.......2006-11-19

Charlotte, the widowed Baroness Mardenford, and Nathaniel Knightridge, renowned London barrister, can't stand each other. Whenever they're in each other's company, they can't resist getting on each other's nerves. All that begins to change when Charlotte shows up at Nathaniel's house to cheer him up. One of his clients, found guilty for whatever crime he committed, was hung that day and Nathaniel was content to get himself drunk to try and forget his failure...until Charlotte shows up. What follows after their usual argument is a sudden heated passionate encounter that catches them off guard.

Regardless of his sexual attraction to Charlotte, Nathaniel can't forget the mysterious woman he met at a masquerade ball a month ago. Every time he's with Charlotte, much to his chagrin, his mind drifts to that woman. As he tries to unveil this mystery, Nathaniel is saddled with prosecuting a man who is tried for extortion. The man tells Nathaniel an interesting story of a young lad whose father is a nobleman. At first, Nathaniel doesn't believe him, until the man ends up dead. Nathaniel decides to investigate the man's claims and runs into the boy in question. His first glimpse of the little boy rocks him back on his heels. Nathaniel immediately realizes that if he were to investigate further, the truth could ruin Charlotte and possibly any chances they have of having a relationship.

I think Lady of Sin was far better than Lord of Sin. The attraction between Nathaniel and Charlotte was far more convincing, moving immediately from their mutual dislike of each other to passionate sexual attraction. The story is further enriched with a believable and enticing mystery involving Charlotte's brother-in-law and what he was trying to cover up. I enjoyed reading this story. It's not my favorite Madeline Hunter book but it's passable.

Book Description

"In the vast literature of love, The Seducer's Diary is an intricate curiosity--a feverishly intellectual attempt to reconstruct an erotic failure as a pedagogic success, a wound masked as a boast," observes John Updike in his foreword to Søren Kierkegaard's narrative. This work, a chapter from Kierkegaard's first major volume, Either/Or, springs from his relationship with his fiancée, Regine Olsen. Kierkegaard fell in love with the young woman, ten years his junior, proposed to her, but then broke off their engagement a year later. This event affected Kierkegaard profoundly. Olsen became a muse for him, and a flood of volumes resulted. His attempt to set right, in writing, what he feels was a mistake in his relationship with Olsen taught him the secret of "indirect communication." The Seducer's Diary, then, becomes Kierkegaard's attempt to portray himself as a scoundrel and thus make their break easier for her.

Matters of marriage, the ethical versus the aesthetic, dread, and, increasingly, the severities of Christianity are pondered by Kierkegaard in this intense work.

4 out of 5 stars A "war of conquest"..........2005-01-08

According to Kierkegaard, there are three stages or spheres of existence: the aesthetic, the ethical and the religious one. In "The seducer's diary", the author depicts the life of someone who has made a conscious choice for the aesthetic way of life, with all the consequences that implies.

The plot is simple, and the book is very short, but all the same the reader will become easily and quickly involved with the characters, and won't be able to forget the lessons learned through them. Johannes is a seducer for vocation and profession: being a seducer isn't really his job, but that is undoubtedly what gives meaning to his life. He likes women only until they have given him everything: it is then that he leaves them, and searches for a new "love". Johannes isn't capable of a big love that will last forever, but rather of many fleeting little "loves", with a definite time limit ("I am an aesthete, an eroticist, who has grasped the nature and the point of love, who believes in love and knows it from the ground up, and I reserve for myself only the private opinion that no love affair should last more that a half a year at most and that any relationship is over as soon as one has enjoyed the ultimate.").

"The seducer's diary" is a transcription of part of Johannes diary. Here the reader will be able to follow the different stages of Johannes seduction (and ultimate betrayal) of Cordelia, his prey. The way in which Johannes plans the above mentioned seduction is rather astonishing, due to the fact that he thinks about it as a "war of conquest" that he has to win little by little, through many well-conceived strategies. Not matter how passionate he might seem at times, we are remembered again and again that he is cold-bloodedly constant to his primal purpose.

On the whole, I really liked "The seducer's diary", and can recommend it to you. To tell the truth, I cannot say that I loved the ending, but I can see that it illustrates Kierkegaard point of view perfectly, bringing home the idea that a purely aesthetic way of life isn't an intelligent choice. Of course, we already knew that, but it is all the same a good idea to read why, expressed in such a conspicuously clear way as this.

5 out of 5 stars Where's the wiseman,that wouldnot be I,if she wouldnot deny.......2002-07-19

This was truly, an amazing read! The words that will be written here, can never begin to tell the complexity of this story. Soren tells, of seductive love, and loss of, through Johannes and Cordelia. Was Kierkegaard a scheming madman, or simply a fool...

The story is told by Johannes, a man ten years Cordelias senior, who spins a web, to bring this young girl of seventeen, into womanhood through an erotic seduction of the mind. Johannes, a brilliant intellectual, I believe, uses the ripple effect of thought to determine the out come of each move that he plots. For instance, when you drop a stone into water, it sends out a ripple of rings, each one, a different path to take, each with it's own set of consequences. Constantly, he's questioning, thinking, and calculating.

Johannes, purposely studies everything about Cordelias' life. Her circle of friends, her family, her daily schedule. Then he makes sure to intervene un-noticed. For example, he knows that at 11am she will be walking down a particular street, he makes a point to walk past her. A day of shopping , to be in the store where she is at. But never approches her, always standing in the shadows. Subconsciously, he's placing his image in her mind. When he discovers that she lives with her Aunt, he sets out to court the Aunt, and befriends Edward, a shy, awkward boy, who's infatuated with Cordelia. But Johannes only uses Edward, to his own advantage of course, exposing Cordelia to the differences between Edward, the boy, and himself, the man. Eventually, Cordelia takes notice, and poor Edward is soon discarded. It's at that point when Johannes askes the Aunt for Cordelia's hand, in an engagement. The Aunt agrees, and Cordelia and Johannes begin their journey.

If you have ever been in love, truly in love, you will feel it written within the pages of this book. The kind we may only find once in our lives, if we are lucky enough for fate to expose it to us with open eyes. I believe that Johannes, found the truest, purest love, with Cordelia, but chose to play a game of the mind, instead of listening to the heart. Which in the end, haunted him the rest of his life!

This book is filled with visionary metaphors, which only adds to it's beauty. Once you attain the rhythm of the prose, it flows like sweet nectar on the palate.

5 out of 5 stars it was great, but tragic.......2002-01-01

it was awesome, it is full of emotion! i feel bad for edvard and especially cordelia. all the characters end up getting shafted at the end, except johannes which is shafted by his existence, the guy has mad people skills, but is a total dumb ass, (he is living the worst kind of existence according to kierkagard's 3 possible life choices; 1. aesthetic 2. ethical 3. religous) but you kind of feel sorry for him too.

5 out of 5 stars the cerebral seducer.......2001-03-23

This reader is torn between joy that this amazing text-within-a text is in print and available to an English-language audience and concern that it is taken out of the context of its intellectual "home," the monumental philosophical work Either/Or. Be that as it may, the Seducer's Diary alone is an entrancing read. The layers of metafiction and seduction are dizzying, the tone and pace wonderfully genteel, but with a hard and frightening core that is guaranteed to give most readers pause. The Diary was written as a supreme example of the concept of the asethetic in the "Either" section of Either/Or. "Or" takes up Kierkegaard's notion of the ethical. Both the aesthetic and the ethical turn out to be pathetic stages on life's way according to Kierkegaard, the only true path being the religious. But don't let the philosophy hamper your enjoyment of the ultimate reflective seducer. Kierkegaard's Johannes makes Don Juan look like a clod.

Book Description

Dreams of the Abandoned Seducer takes place in the new “free market” era of personal choices and relations: a chaotic, sometimes hopeful, often comic world that has supplanted the old order of political terror and clearly demarcated ideological divides. The novel’s vaudeville qualities, with characters shuffling on and off the page in rapid succession, are complemented by its exhilarating air of parody. Dreams draws ingeniously upon the sentimentality and ephemera of popular culture—quoting radio and TV shows, song lyrics, newspaper items, and bits of gossip— while also offering a sterner, more nuanced view of public and private relations. It is in large measure this mix of elements—“popular” and “high” culture, sentimentality and political understanding, vaudeville and arch satire—that makes Dreams an exemplary postmodern novel.

Book Description

Jonas Wergeland, a successful TV documentary producer with a touch of God's gift to women, returns one evening for the World's Fair in Seville to find his wife dead on the living room floor. What follows is a quest to find the killer, encompassing by turns a picaresque and endlessly inventive look at the conditions that have brought Wergeland to this critical juncture in life. From his hair's breadth escape form a ravenous polar bear while filming in Greenland to a near-death experience aboard a passenger ferry in the icy Baltic, the Tom Jones-like experiences that comprise the narrative of Wergeland's life, relayed in Kjaerstad's veneered and acutely observant prose, provide a fascinating portrait of a media icon at the crux of his journey as an artist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Infinite Possibility.......2007-04-30

Constructed as the biography of Jonas Wergeland, Norway's very popular TV documentary producer, the novel begins with a strange Publisher's Forward that explains that the biographer remains anonymous. Written in the first person by an author who knows more about Wergeland than Wergeland himself, the enigmatic author tells an enigmatic story. Non-linear in form, the biographer relates the story telling to a bicycle wheel, a story told as a "spinning narrative in which I keep picking spokes at random, which is something which I can do because I know that all of the spokes run from the outer rim to the centre and that chronology is not the same as causality." Cause and effect magically become effect generating its own cause.

The story begins with Wergeland coming home to find his wife, Margrete, murdered. But this is most certainly not a murder mystery. Instead, it's a story about storytelling itself, the possibilities of life, and the reader`s own imagination. Wergeland is the both subject and of the story and the teller to Norwegians of stories about world-famous Norwegians. He is the seducer of women and of a nation, and I, for one, have also been seduced. Like a rug described in the book, The Seducer presents a world of infinite possibility.

4 out of 5 stars Very good work on Psychology & Aromas.......2003-10-01

I found the book fascinating and well researched. It includes a great deal of information on the relationship between aromas and the mind.

It also includes many good references to previous works which make it a very good resource of information.

The information is well presented and organized.

5 out of 5 stars an intriguing examination of our most under-rated sense.......1998-08-07

If given a choice of which sense one would least like to lose, smell would certainly rank last. Yet our sense of smell is our oldest and most basic connection to the world around us. We probably begin to smell our mother while floating in her womb, and may be attracted to our future mates by their odiferous-fingerprint. Vroon gives a readable survey of the anatomy and physiology of our olfactory organ, and explains the implications of its direct connection to the sites of the most basic impulses in our brains.

5 out of 5 stars an intriguing look at an important but ignored subject.......1998-08-02

This is a fascinating insight into our most basic, but most overlooked sense. Lots of basic factual information, which is clearly written and easy to understand, and lots of interesting and thought provoking material about how important our noses are in our daily lives. Quick reading - will liven up your next conversation.

DIARY OF A SEDUCER is the disturbing narrative of a man who explores his sense of detachment by deliberately arousing the passion of a young society girl. Inspired by events in Kierkegaard's own life that are still shrouded in mystery, this story is a vivid exploration of the complex psychology of cruelty and love.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled..........2005-10-04

...by contemporary pop memoirs like "The Game" and "The System." After all, whatever weaknesses those "pick-up artists" overcame, be it shyness or baldness, they certainly didn't have to deal with having a hunchback or living in a society which elevated prudishness. As a second advantage, Kierkegaard also learned how to write. Don't hate the player...

5 out of 5 stars the ultimate aesthetic experience.......2001-05-07

As most Kierkegaard buffs will know, this novel is actually a small part of the monumental philosophical tract, Either/Or from 1843. Please don't let that fact keep you from reading this delightfully seductive and disturbing novel. In it, Kierkegaard sets out to describe and explore the life of the ultimate aesthete, Johannes, as he targets an innocent young girl, Cordelia, for seduction. Kierkegaard plays with layers of framing and writes such exquisite prose that at least this reader constantly has to struggle not to be seduced by the beauty of it. His aim in writing the text is, at least in part, to show how horrible Johannes and people like him really are, but a surprising number of people just plain don't get the subtlety of Kierkegaard's irony. Hannay's translation doesn't seem to get in the way (I've read it in the original Danish as well), although I'll leave it to the Kierkegaard scholars to determine whether its really a good translation or not.
