Book Description

Duke Cunningham was an All-American success story. The Midwestern boy who went off to war, became a hero, and rode his fame into Congress even bragged that Tom Cruise played him in a popular movie. But the fall of this "Top Gun" was almost as epic and just as cinematic. Today he sits in prison, branded as the most corrupt member of Congress in U.S. history.

To the public, Cunningham was a heroic family man. In reality, he was a hard-drinking, partisan bully with a lavish sense of entitlement and feckless moral compass. He partnered with rogues like Brent Wilkes and Mitch Wade, and together they hatched a grandiose plan to get rich wrapping themselves in the flag. Over time, Cunningham fed Wilkes and Wade tens of millions of dollars in vital post-9/11 contracts in exchange for millions in bribes. Their clubhouse was a yacht tied up along the Potomac River. From there, they traveled the city in limos, flew in private jets, and hosted all-night parties at posh hotels. Their funding came from "earmarks" in classified military contracts that were supposed to protect our troops in Iraq--not be squandered on booze and beautiful women, on yachts and jets.

Now, members of the team that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for sending Cunningham to prison uncover new details in a story still unfolding in Washington. The Wrong Stuff chronicles Cunningham's rise and his sordid fall. It is the saga of a man who came to believe his own press clippings and developed an enormous sense of self-entitlement, a man strong enough to brave enemy fire but too weak to resist the corrupt contractors and lobbyists in the nation's capital. It is also the story of the shadowy side of Washington today. More than just the story of one crooked politician, this is an inside look at how our system allowed this to happen. The Wrong Stuff provides the context for Cunningham's misdeeds and shows that more than one man's venality was involved. Indeed, there were things darkly wrong with Washington that invited Cunningham--and others--to steal, often putting American soldiers and Marines at risk during wartime.

If you want to understand the recent outcry over congressional corruption, then you need to understand how Cunningham and his contractor friends used the government to enrich themselves. This penetrating, witty, and gossipy analysis of how they stole and how they got caught makes for a fascinating read with a lesson for all Americans.

4 out of 5 stars The problem with heroes.......2007-08-28

The Wrong Stuff is a good read on a number of levels.

It challenges our overuse of the word "hero" and forces us to be more discerning and skeptical about those we so readily put on pedestals. Apart from those few minutes over North Vietnam, a bit of luck combined with flying skill, there was nothing heroic about Duke Cunningham. Character flaws were evident in his youth. What he did in Congress should come as no surprise. As Sartre says, the end is in the beginning.

The Wrong Stuff illustrates the need for political reform in campaign finance, the legislative process of earmarks, ethics and oversight. These are dry subjects, but by putting a face -- albeit a sad and corrupt one --on the subject, the authors have penned a readable, well-understood page-turner. They have made a complex issue understandable.

And it is a good how-to book on journalism. Marc Stern broke the story by using good, old-fashioned news instinct born of experience first gained poking around the docks of the gritty Los Angeles port of San Pedro, then later the back hallways and rooms of Washington. He followed those instincts by working the phones, asking probing questions, pounding the pavement and not taking no for an answer. If you want a lesson on how to win a Pulitzer, which Stern did, this is a good place to start. He followed the Yogi Berra axiom: "You can see a lot just by looking."

3 out of 5 stars Gave new meaning to the term "hubris.".......2007-08-23

I live in San Diego and bought this book at a street festival. Two of the authors (Marcus Stern and Dean Calbreath) were there and signed the book for me.

The book describes the seemingly sudden fall of Congressman and war hero Randy Cunningham. I say "seemingly" because the authors show that his crimes were the logical extensions of a pattern of behavior based on the belief that he was above rules and laws that the rest of us follow.

The book starts on Duke's best day: May 10, 1972. On that day he and Willie Driscoll shot down three enemy aircraft; this made them the first Navy Aces of the Vietnam War and they were awarded the Navy Cross. What few people knew about Duke was his demand that he be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. When he made this demand to his commanding officer, Ron McKeown, told him: "You ain't going to get the Medal of Honor. Here's what's going to go down: First, both of you are going to go get a haircut. Then you're going to get your blues cleaned and pressed with gold braid and make sure you've got a good shine on your shoes. And tomorrow, at ten o'clock, a grateful nation is going to heap its praise on two of its lofty heros and give you the Navy Cross. And you're going to accept them and be gracious and charming. Anything less than that and I will personally rip your [breasts] off."

From there it's off to the races. Duke's life was nothing more than a series of these events leading to Congress where he had no Ron McKeown to reign him in. As a congressman he played up the war hero image to the max, even falsely claiming to be the inspiration of Tom Cruise in Top Gun. He also found that there were people who would slip money to him in return for awarding defense contracts and this seemed to have no limit.

Duke's world started to fall apart when it was revealed that he sold his home for an inflated price to Mitchell Wade, a defense contractor who earned incredible profits from Duke's earmarks. Pulling this string began an avalanche of stories that even Duke's best efforts couldn't stop. My favorite story was his call to an antique store in Maryland. Mr. Wade bought several antiques for Duke and in a pathetic attempt to cover this Duke called the manager to "remind" her that when Wade paid for it with a credit card, Duke reimbursed Wade with cash. He insisted he paid Wade $35,000 but the manager (Sandra Ellington) wouldn't buy it saying that she would remember if he gave Wade 350 $100 bills.

I liked the book and recommend it, but with two caveats. First, the book has 4 authors and it shows. They all have different writing styles and it makes the book choppy; they would have been well served if they had hired one editor to smooth over this and make the book easier to read. Second one of the authors (I'm not sure which) had a habit of making assumptions with nothing to back it up. In describing Duke's lifestyle between marriages he talked about Duke's evenings at the officer's club on base. "Cunningham...was no stranger to the police during these years. But these were different times, way before Mothers Against Drunk Driving and legislative crackdowns on drinking, long before the term 'designated driver' existed. And not many cops, either on or off the base, were about to arrest a man they knew was the Navy's only ace. Far better to just make sure he got home safely without hurting himself or others." The quotation is fine but gives no indication that Duke drove drunk or was pulled over. This would have had much more credibility if he had a quotation from a local cop who had pulled him over.

That said, it's a good read about a man who believed he was untouchable.

5 out of 5 stars Duke Cunningham - Traitor to America.......2007-08-11

Don't forget, Duke was using his influence and reputation as a war hero to steer defense contracts. He was stealing from the Armed Forces in time of war, a traitor to his country and his own men.

Not only is Duke at the center of the Hookergate scandal, this ties into the US attorney scandal, as well as the indictment of Brent Wilkes and former CIA official Kyle "Dusty" Foggo. The Wilkes/Foggo debacle is apparently tied to bribery at the CIA. Google their names and "IranConta" to see how many of the characters in the Cunningham scandal go back to the Reagan adminsitration. Apparently the money laundring, drug running, and bribery network that started in the 80's took on a life of its own. While the Iraq war was still in the planning stages, they swarmed into DC and started bribing congressmen like Cunningham to get their cut of the Iraq pie in the form of sole source contracts.

1 out of 5 stars What about the $90,000 in Congressman Jefferson's freezer?.......2007-08-04

The author's claim that Cunningham was a corrupt Congressman is true, but his claim that he is the "Most Corrupt Congressman Ever Caught" is not true. Congressman William Jefferson has been caught The FBI seized $90,000 in marked bills in Jefferson's home freezer. That cold cash is just the tip of the iceberg of the evidence against "Dollar Bill" Jefferson.
There is a major difference between Cunningham and Jefferson. Cunningham was a brave and decorated combat pilot. By contrast, Jefferson did not serve in combat and may never have served in the military at all.
This book is a one-sided hatchet job.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!.......2007-07-02

Lily Tomlin once said no matter how cynical you are, you can't keep up. Mostly, I've viewed Congress as corrupt in those small, corrosive and bipartisan ways: a campaign donation begets wording in a bill, a vote or a visit. But, the size and scale of Duke Cunningham's pocket-bulging corruption boggles the mind. It must be read to be believed. And, the authors carefully inserted an important qualifier in their subtitle: the Most Corrupt Congressman EVER CAUGHT. All of which makes you wonder: What happened to all those promised reforms on ethics and lobbying?

The scandalously handsome Samson Carlisle is not the deceiving nobleman Lady Olivia was searching for... but he's the lover she fervently desires.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Duke of Scandal.......2007-02-16

Lady Olivia Shea is searching for her husband. Olivia was married to Lord Edmund Carlisle for only a few hours when she realized that something was wrong. Her husband has disappeared taking most of Olivia's fortune with him.

Lord Samson Carlisle is attending a ball when he is introduced to the stunning Lady Olivia. Then Olivia accuses Sam of leaving her. Sam plays along for a bit just to see what Olivia knows about his missing, deceitful brother, but soon he and Olivia become reluctant allies trying to find Edmund.

Sam respects Olivia's intelligence and ability to run a successful perfume business. He is also very attracted to her, but Olivia is his brother's wife and therefore clearly off limits. Sam and Edmund may look identical, but Olivia finds herself drawn to the differences that distinguish Sam from Edmund. Olivia and Sam 's attraction sizzles to the surface but they still have to find Edmund.

Someone close to Olivia is involved in the scheming, proving the deception goes much further than she could have ever imagined, but Sam is being deceived as well. When he discovers who is behind it all, he is determined to make them pay and bring happiness back to his beloved Olivia.

Duke of Scandal is full of shocking revelations with plenty of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Sam and Olivia are stunning, in both looks and personality. Their moments of intimacy are incredibly moving and sensual, and their emotions are vividly and powerfully expressed; they are brilliant together. The final showdown is everything I hoped it would be. Duke of Scandal is thrilling, suspenseful, passionate, and romantic. It's a wonderful story.

This is my first book my this author and I was really surprised at how much I liked it. Particularly since I'd never heard of this author and I'm skeptical to buy books written by authors I'm not even vaguely familiar with. But the same thing happened when I picked up one of Melody Thomas' book. I've read everything else she's written and I'll do the same with Adele Ashworth. The story was moving, the dialogue great and the characters real. I had trouble putting it down to do other things. Sam was a wonderfully, sexy hero and Olivia a wonderful heroine however, I don't think Edmund got his just desserts in the end. All in all, well written and well worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Title and cover a bit off...content really good!.......2006-06-28

Excellent read.

First book I found and read by this author but, certainly not the last.

I found this to be a moving novel with a complex story line and characters but, still easy to follow. The main heroine Olivia was a great combination of wit, intelligent, beauty and charm...living a modern life in historical times. The main hero Samson was a great leading man with a dark and tarnished past but, a warm, loving and complex heart and soul. He was waiting to become the man he was always meant to be and he did this during the evolution of his relationship with Olivia.

I found the background of the vastly different twins - Sam and Edmond - to be very plausible and the author worked in well how Olivia fit into both men's lives and the outcome that was to be found at the end of the book. Some twin stories get too far fetched to be believed (and even now that idea that Sam's old lover Claudette didn't recognize him years later was a little hard to believe but, some people are so simple and narrow sighted even this is possible).

Over-all, the story line kept you intrigued, the tale revolved mainly around Sam and Olivia posing as a couple to seek out Edmond and make him right the wrong he had done to her. Sam helped her achieve this and to eliminate old ghosts he had with his brother as well. The friendship and love that developed between Sam and Olivia over time was warm and wonderful and soon to be tested once they did meet up with Edmond.

This book was exactly as a great love story should be - filled with excitement, passion, attraction, intrigue, a little mystery, conflicts, drama, pain and heartache and then, final resolution. If you want a love story that is not flat and one dimensional (only sex, or only intrigue or only history), than this is the book for you. It had enough of it all and then some.

A few readers felt the dialogue was not historic enough (too many 21st century words and phrases) but, that didn't cause me to flinch as some books do. Many of the scenes were not historical and unlikely (bathing together, always in each others chambers, being found alone room after room to be naughty and no one caught them etc) but...let's be honest...we don't read romances for COMPLETE accuracy. That's for history buffs. Love stories are meant to be a little off, a little different and a lot in tune with our imaginations and less with what the world requires. These minor deviations were a-ok for me.

I'm looking forward to reading some of this author's earlier works and will keep an eye out for new ones as well. She is a solid read and she'll be on my watch list here on out.

Four stars for Duke of Scandal!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read! Everything a Romance is Supposed To Be!.......2006-06-25

Adele Ashworth always does a great job of creating interesting characters, and she always keeps the sexual tension high. Good job, Adele! It's too bad Avon won't reward her with better covers. She's certainly one of the top romance writers of the day!

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars. Ambivalent about this one.......2006-05-16

This is only the fourth book by Adele Ashworth that I have read (the others being WINTER GARDEN, WHEN IT'S PERFECT and the first book in this trilogy DUKE OF SIN). While I've generally enjoyed her books, I've never been quite as enamored of her work as many readers who would consistently rate her books in the 4 1/2 or 5 star range. Having said that, I SHOULD have liked this book much more than I did. I liked the hero and heroine, I liked the plot, I liked the character development. Unfortunately, the book simply did not hold my interest like it should (particularly the first half) and I'm not sure I can clearly articulate why. It took me six days to read this book, a period during which I would normally have read two or three books, because I kept putting it down. I found my attention wandering while I was reading it, though that effect did fade as the book progressed.

Olivia Shea is half French, half English and runs a perfume house in Paris called Nivan that she inherited from her stepfather. She is a very competent business woman and is very proud of her accomplishments. Except for the biggest mistake she's ever made - trusting and marrying Edmund Carlisle. She discovered on her wedding night that Edmund had disappeared taking her inheritance with him. Well, he's not going to get away with this. And so Olivia goes on the hunt, finally tracking him down in London. She plans to confront him, right here in this crowded ballroom, and make him return her funds!

Samson Carlisle, Duke of Durham is rather bored with the ladies of the ton. They all look the same, act the same. And so, it is with wary interest that he agrees to be introduced to a "Frenchwoman" who has asked to meet him. His trepidation stems from a scandal from his past which involved a treacherous French woman and his own devious twin brother, Edmund. On meeting Miss Olivia Shea, formerly of Elmsboro, now of Paris, he is struck by two things. The first is that she is incredibly, strikingly beautiful and the second is that she thinks he is Edmund. Sam has not seen Edmund in a decade and their parting was extremely unpleasant. When Olivia discovers that Sam is Edmund's twin, she is shocked, wondering what else she never knew about her husband (what indeed!). When she tells Sam the whole story, he agrees to help her find Edmund and get her much needed funds returned to her. And so they leave for Paris, where Sam will pass himself off as Edmund in order to flush him out.

Time spent together allows this couple to get to know and like one another, and eventually they fall in love. Olivia quickly realizes that, twins or not, Sam is nothing like Edmund. He's honorable, honest, but clearly does not trust easily. He also keeps his thoughts and feelings very close to the vest and so he is not so easy for Olivia to figure out though she's keen to try. For his part, Sam is extremely attracted to Olivia on a physical and intellectual level, but his past experience keeps him from fully trusting her. As they get ever closer to their prey, they find it increasingly difficult not to act on their mutual attraction. And as the night of their confrontation with Edmund arrives, what will happen when the masquerade is over?

Though some readers may dislike Sam, or perhaps find him a bit grim, I found Ms Ashworth's depiction of Sam very realistic. He is a man who was hurt and betrayed and as a result he is wary of people in general. I also liked Olivia whose optimistic confidence in her abilities and judgement is totally shaken by her experience with Edmund. In the end these two are perfect for one another. I just wish the beginning had flowed a little better for me.

American Rhapsody is a gleeful act of outrage, simultaneously an assault on the Clintons and a bridge-burning, tell-all Hollywood memoir in the wicked spirit of You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again. Joe Eszterhas's narrative is a torrent of consciousness with no consistent sense of direction, but it all erupts from a plausible organizing principle best articulated in the chapter "Bubba in Pig Heaven": Hollywood is where Clinton really belongs. The author claims Bill watches Blazing Saddles six times a year, and says that Gennifer Flowers got him blazing by enacting a Sharon Stone-like crotch-shot scene years before Basic Instinct. When a sarcastic Clinton allegedly told a Hollywood producer that his enemies would soon be accusing him of coupling with a cow, the producer sent him Eszterhas's 1989 screenplay Sacred Cow, in which a president does just that. Eszterhas claims Spielberg dropped the film because of his friendship with Clinton. But he still thinks Clinton would be great in the role.

The Lewinsky saga really should be ho-hum by now, but American Rhapsody's Evel Knievel-like leaps of free association and mad brio breathe life into it. You've never been properly introduced to Linda Tripp and Lucianne Goldberg until you've read "The Ratwoman and the Bag Lady of Sleaze," its uproarious take on the pair. American Rhapsody gives dozens of stars time in the sweaty spotlight: Matt "the Scavenger" Drudge, heroic Larry Flynt (whose threat to report Republican scandals Eszterhas credits with quashing impeachment)--almost every big political scandal victim in memory. And there are lots of Hollywood types behaving badly: Bob Dylan, Warren Beatty, Ronald Reagan, Farrah Fawcett, Sharon Stone, Robert Evans, Sly Stallone (who wanted to portray Jesus onscreen), and even Joe Eszterhas. The fantasy chapters, printed in boldface, are sometimes funny (e.g., "Kenneth W. Starr Confesses"), but mostly they're both over the top and below the belt (e.g., "Willard Comes Clean," the confessions of the president's penis). What holds your interest is the main narrative, a heady mix of showbiz gossip, personal essay, and Lester Bangs-style prose mania. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

In this hybrid of fantasy, memoir, and editorial, former Rolling Stone editor and Hollywood insider/outlaw Joe Eszterhas spares no one. He covers the Clintons, Monica Lewinsky, and Linda Tripp in Washington, D.C.; Sharon Stone, Farrah Fawcett, and David Geffen on the West Coast; and everyone involved in politics and entertainment - living or dead - in between. Combining comprehensive research with insight, honesty, and fiction, American Rhapsody is an in-your-face look at the people running this country. It is also a rollicking good tale filled with humor, tragedy, suspense, high drama, and melodrama. And, of course, it's spiced with plenty of sex. With performances by a cast of experienced actors, this romp flouts virtually every rule, joining the rich tradition of works by Norman Mailer, Jack Kerouac, Tom Wolfe, and Hunter Thompson.

Political satirist Mark Russell pictures President Clinton being sculpted onto Mount Rushmore--"from the waist down." Eszterhas, the author of such fine screen plays as F.I.S.T. and Betrayed and such stinkers as Sliver and Showgirls, provides literary justification for Russell's vision in this farcical waist-level panorama of the Clinton years, in what could be the offspring of the mating of The Joy of Sex and Portnoy's Complaint. Readers are probably aware of the media hype surrounding this book, especially the role of Willard, the "longer than Willie" presidential phallus, which in a rousing climax reveals the true source of President Clinton's power. The author's probing analysis and extensive reading results in a novel that rings more true than many of the "nonfiction" accounts of the President and First Lady Hillary. Eszterhas and his coauthoring "Twisted Little Man" alter ego create often sidesplitting and frequently poignant dialog spoken by such characters as Richard "Night Creature" Nixon; Larry Flynt, the pornographer-in-chief who may have saved the presidency by threatening to blackmail right-wing attackers in no position to "cast the first stone"; presidential pal Vernon Jordan; one-time Republican presidential contender John "Wayne" McCain; Vice President Al Gore; and, of course, Bill and Hillary Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. This political fable could have been nicely shortened if the author had left out his too many stories about his experiences in Hollywood and as a reporter for the Rolling Stone. Yet it is strongly recommended for public libraries as a painfully funny and all too excruciatingly real expos of Clinton's America.--Karl Helicher, Upper Merion Twp. 5 out of 5 stars Irresistably preposterous-- But know what you are in for.......2005-09-15

Eszterhas the book writer is more intriguing and ideosyncratic than Eszterhas the screen writer. Be prepared for a 60's counter culture apologia pro vita sua with interesting detours (such as a tribute to Barry Goldwater).

The book is ultimately a tour of America the Horny across the life span of baby boomers. "Life span" is the proper term, since there is raunch enough for a lifetime. The organizing principle is that Bill Clinton is the avatar for the sexual acting out of the rock and roll lifestyle. Clinton is not particularly revered here, although Hilary is portrayed as so cold (and maybe gay) that Bill had little choice.

There is a lot of malicious gossip here, but some is true. The challenge is distinguishing between gossip that is malicious and that which is false and malicious.

For all the astoundingly diverse sexual activity described, there is a clinical detachment. Eszterhas uses few words (save when quoting others) that the New York Times would not print.

Eszterhas narrates lots of the book and is not an especially skilled reader-- although the ring of authenticity he gives keeps it from being annoying. Ed Asner is a fine reader.

Be prepared for Eszterhas's substantial ego.

3 out of 5 stars ?????.......2004-04-03

I tend to vote Republican but refuse to align myself with the Right Wing or Moral Majority. I'm the guy in the middle that the candidates are really after. I say that as any review on this book should be tempered by the politics of the reader. JE is an avowed Democrat with socialist leanings. Read his most recent book "American Animal" to verify this. So it was surprising as I read the first third of this book that after an initial bow to Clinton as the Rock & Roll Prez, one of "us", he then seems to chastise him for his fatal flaws. This part of the book is interesting, engaging, but also somewhat repetitive. I still couldn't wait to read it my allotted hour a night.

But there is only so much you can talk about this subject and JE rambles on and on until he finally manages to really offend me. How? Well, I just finished his most recent book, "American Animal" an autobiography which I immensely enjoyed. Full of Hollywood stories. But reading this, I see that JE has included many of the stories I enjoyed from his autobiography in this political commentary/fantasy. So is he a writer with a message or is he just repeating his few stories to make a buck?

I don't know what to make of this book, thus my title. Did I enjoy some parts? Yes. Are there some interesting stories? Yes. But there is a lot of waste. It's like wandering thru a jungle with a machete looking for your trail. When you find it, it's worth the work. So maybe the only item I can add of interest came from reading this with some years of aging. JE takes on Arianna Huffington who he spends quite a bit of time describing her history to show what a bad person she is and how she climbed to the top while stepping on other people's faces. But would JE have included these chapters in this form if he had known that within a few years she would shift sides and now disavow her right wing leanings? I think not.

This is not a great book. But if you enjoy reading, maybe you will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Decent and Deplorable- in prose from the spheres........2002-10-06

This is the truth! I never read any other of these exposes and during the majority of the media coverage of the episode that led to Clinton's impeachment- I switched to the animal planet. After reading some reviews on Amazon, I bought this book and I'm glad I did. "The Comeback Kid" takes plenty of flack from the author, but Eszterhas spares none. I like the names: The Big Kielbasa- Wilt Chamberlain, "The Bag Lady of Sleaze"- Lucienne Goldberg, the lady who got the story into the media,"Hilla the Hun," "The Night Creature"- Nixon- "The Manchurian Candidate"- McCain- "The Rat Woman,"- Linda Tripp, it goes on to the current president named, "The Crown Prince." The coarsest individual does have the funniest lines, i.e. LBJ- too much to repeat here. The few who seem to get off lightly, like Monica, and believe it or not- Barry Goldwater and Newsweek Magazine who had the story and never printed it.
Perhaps the most effective and distressing part of the book is when Eszterhas does a mini retrospective of all the things we didn't want to know, but did over the years, here are a few: Sen. Harkin blowing his nose on CNN without a handkerchief, Bush Sr. throwing up in China, Buchanon saying "Congress is an Israeli occupied territory," Bob Dylan and Elizabeth T., LBJ turning to the side and taking a whizz at an outdoor press conference, Nixon and Kissinger kneeling together and praying, Spiro Agnew, "If you've seen one city slum you've seen them all," Michael Jackson and his chimp, David Bowie and Mick Jagger. (?)

Eszterhas obviously knows more and remembers more than is probably good for him, but his prose is stunning as is the manner by which he weaves the book together- even with some fiction. The author was the screenwriter for Fatal Attraction and had a relationship with Sharon Stone- who also takes some upper cuts and was rumored to have been intimate with Clinton as well. I definitely recommend reading this- for the humor and frankly, The gossip is completely consuming.

5 out of 5 stars MUCH more than smutty tell-all.......2002-02-02

What a memorable and highly rewarding read. This book is much more than the sum of it's salacious and often repugnant contents; it's also a lecture on morality and a history lesson as well. I don't see how someone who reads this book can be derisive regarding the interlacing of fiction or the sheer amount of sordid detail. Given Eszerhas' talent for script writing and keen interest for the underbelly of the American society, how his book is put together should be no surprise. It's certainly not a novel or a bucket of heresay poo.
I am one who is generally both revolted and amused by the tabloids, and shows like Entertainment Television. But I could not put this book down. The book is informative and revealing, and I found myself lauging out loud and cringing, often while reading the same paragraph. I particularly enjoyed the moments where Eszterhas reflects on his own life; it's probably the most engaging aspect of the book. Expecting to find a smutty and over the top tell-all, I found something rich in intelligent, values-based writing.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Joe Eszterhas!.......2001-08-19

In the age of hypocrisy, defamation of character, finger-pointing, lying, manipulating, dirty tricks, and political warfare known as The Clinton Era, here is a book that tells it all. But guess what, no one can call Joe Eszterhas a member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. He's as far to the left as they come, and this book details exactly why those from the left should despise Bill Clinton and everything he stood for. There's a good reason why Richard Nixon's shadow pops up throughout this narrative. Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon are so similar that it's scary. This book looks at the hope the Flower Children had in Bill Clinton when he was elected President, and then goes on to explain why he was the antithesis of what people like Eszterhas had hoped for in him. Bill Clinton's Presidency, Eszterhas argues, wasn't about any great cause other than Bill Clinton. But Eszterhas doesn't just go after Bill Clinton. Hillary, Al, W., Dole, and others all get the same treatment here. Eszterhas hates hypocrisy and here he goes after it. Unfortunately for America, there is a lot to go after.
