The Actor's Bible on your Journey.......2006-06-24
I read Dawn Lerman's book after a chance meeting with a good friend of mine who had been speaking highly of her work. I went to Barnes & Noble one day, sat down for three hours and read the whole book. The Information in this book is highly valuable to the young and old alike starting out in the biz. Although the book is mostly catered to L.A. the information on classes, networking and the hollistic approach to acting can be used for anyone anywhere to acheive success.
Currently I reside in NY and have found great success here. When the timing is right this will definitely be in my carry on when I take that trip.
a little gem.......2006-03-25
This book is an absolute gem
I found it at LAX newly arriving from ohoo
I have been folloeing the steps and I have ser up a great new life for myself and am working alot in theatre and doing my own web show .the theatre tips were especially helpful. I recommend it to anyone who does not have a good grasp of LA. It def will help prepare you for starting out your career
This is a MUST read.......2006-02-10
I moved out to LA from NYC and found the whole acting business very intimidating. It was my good fortune that a fellow actor I met at a commercial casting recommended this inspiring book to me. It is filled with valuable information that all actors new to this city need to have at their fingertips. Dawn Lerman practically takes you by the hand and walks you thru all the things you can do to promote your success in an incredibly competitive industry. She writes not only with the saviness of an actor who has learned to hustle to manifest success but the heart and care of a drama therapist. I appreciate Lerman's diligent study of how to take as much control as possible in a career where you can feel so powerless. Many thanks to the authors!
oh please.......2006-01-19
Two never-employed wannabe actors write a book on "Becoming an Actor"? How good can their advice be if it didn't work for them? Look for other hot titles like "Financial Independence" by a guy who is on welfare and "World Hotspots" by some lady who has never left Reseda.
if i was going to try to be an actor in la..i would follow these steps.......2005-09-23
for a nanosecond of my life..i thought about pursuing acting as a career, either thru stage or tv/film. so i decided to do some research about doing it. and i came across this book and decided to give it a try. very easy to read and very informative. i only gave it 4 stars because i chickened out and decided to not try to be an actor..so i dont know if these things are true that they wrote about. but none the less very entertaining! the only thing that i remember from the book was..dont do porn if you want to be taken seriously! hahaha i guess traci lords should have read this book first.
Book Description
Bedlah, Baubles, and Beads is a book about designing and crafting the elaborate bra and belt sets worn by contemporary belly dancers. Also known as "dance oriental" and "raks sharki," belly dancing has numerous sub-styles that are defined not only by their movement vocabulary, but also by their distinctive costuming.
The first part of the book provides a conceptual framework by starting with a history of this costuming style and its origins here in the United States. From there, it concentrates on introducing the reader to design principles, methods, and techniques for developing figure-flattering styles.
The second part presents the materials, tools, and processes for putting together an elaborately decorated bra and belt set. Step-by-step illustrations for applying beads, a fabric shopping guide, and directions for constructing the bra and belt bases are all illustrated with descriptive diagrams to aid the reader.
Finally, the book finishes with a portfolio of styles and ideas for expanding the performance wardrobe. From skirts to accessories, these chapters introduce the essential garments that transform the bra and belt into a complete costume.
Detailed topics include:
* Step-by-step illustrations of beading techniques, including back stitch, couching, tambour beading, scatter beading, and more.
* Directions for making high-quality bedlah, from concept to finished costume.
* Techniques for developing beading patterns using clip art sources and transforming images into dynamic designs.
* Fitting and covering bras and belts.
An extensive bibliography and a list of mail-order resources is included.
Customer Reviews:
Good, clear instructions - makes you want to sew!.......2006-07-05
Inspiring! It has great notes on different styles and ways to flatter your figure, and clear directions on making your own costume for the moderately crafty. The beading section is highly recommended. I hear her website is good, too.
Excellent book on the principles of design, construction and embellishment.......2006-06-14
As someone that is new to belly dancing I was surprised at the prices of the costumes. Being an avid do-it-yourselfer, I decided to figure out how to make my own. Unless you count 7th grade home economics I have never made a garment in my life, nor have I had any sewing training. This is not to say that I don't sew at all, because I do. I have made lined Roman blinds, pillow covers, duvets, and slipcovers for the v-berth of a boat. Garment sewing has been something that I avoided because it seemed far too complex. This book has given me the confidence to give costume making a whirl.
This book is extremely well written and very easy to follow. The directions are very clear, even for a novice sewer like myself. The book covers the following information:
PART - DESIGN
1. History
2. Contemporary Styles of Costume
3. Principles of Design
4. Designer's Toolbox
5. An Analytic Approach to Designing Bedlah
6. Designing for Every Body
PART II - BEDLAH CONSTRUCTION AND EMBELLISHMENT
7. Bra Construction
8. Belt Construction
9. Surface Embellishments
10. Beading Techniques
11. Developing Beaded Designs
PART III - COMPLETING THE LOOK
12. Skirts and Pants
13. Accent Garments
14. Dresses and Gowns
15. Accessories and Embellishments
The section on the contemporary styles of dancewear is very enlightening. The costumes that the author identifies go way beyond what a new belly dancer is aware exists. The author's drawings have opening up a new world of possibilities to me.
The principles of design outlined by the author are extremely helpful. The author managed to answer questions that I didn't know that I had. Once I read about the right and wrong way to proportion things, and emphasis different areas it all made complete sense.
Everyone can learn from the section on how to design for your specific body. We all have areas that we want to emphasize or de-emphasize and the author explains exactly how to go about it.
The author covers Bra construction in this book. However, I recommend her book "Embellished Bras" for a more complete dissertation on the subject. Embellishment of the Bra and Belt are the most difficult parts of the costume. If you can get those done you are home free.
Overall, I thought I knew what I wanted to make until I picked up this book. Now I am thinking my first costume will be an Indian costume from Sari fabric. The options are endless once you have this book for inspiration and instruction. I highly recommend this book to any dancer.
Fantastic!.......2003-01-28
This book is more than just directions for putting together bras and belts! Davina does a wonderful job starting in Chapter 1 as she gives the reader a brief summary of the costumes seen in the US over the past 100 years.
The true jewel in this book is going to be Chapter 3! Davina provides invaluable insight on the principles of design and wonderful examples of how it can translate to the cabaret bra/belt costume. Even if you have no desire to ever pick up needle and thread, you should read this book and make it a practice to sketch costume ideas on your personal croquis, as it will help you discover what looks good on you and what doesn't all without having to spend hours trying on various costumes!
Best of the series so far.......2003-01-03
Of Dawn and Barry's series of Belly dance costumes books, this one is the best and most comprehensive. A good basic book explaning costume elements, design basics and simple construction techniques. As a very useful chapter on how to emphasise each dance move and enhance a dancer's physique through design details. Line drawings illustrate most the complex ideas although a few sewing stitches could have used pictures, too. An excellent addition to any library for the dancer or costumer alike.
The best!.......2002-07-09
This book has all the information needed to make or select a spectacular, flattering costume. It is clear, practical and comprehensive.
I especally liked the Design section. Her method to design for individual body types is very objective. For example, she tells you how to both emphasize and de-emphasize wide shoulders. She makes no value judgements here - the dancer decides what effect she wants to make.
Construction details seem very complete. This chapter can help dancers select a well-made costume that will last thru many performances. All the essentials for making a complete ensemble!
Book Description
From Turban to Toe Ring is a guide for designing and making tribal-fusion belly dance wear. This style, which originated in the San Francisco dance community and has spread world-wide, is fast becoming one of the most popular costuming options. Tribal-fusion costuming is an assemblage of design elements pulled from many different tribal, rural, and nomadic peoples from North Africa, across the Near and Middle East, and as far away as India. Surface design techniques, articles of clothing, and jewelry components are fused together to create a look that blends all of these items into an exciting and uniquely individual image for each dancer.
This book will be an excellent reference source for the libraries of dancers, costume designers, historical re-enactors, and dancers who want a break from the high glitz and glamour of cabaret-style costuming.
From Turban to Toe Ring contains numerous hints, tips, and directions for making, designing, and assembling a tribal-fusion costume, including:
* A country-by-country breakdown of tribal jewelry styles from the Berber people of Morocco to the Ribari of India.
* Patternmaking directions for several different choli and salwar designs.
* Directions for traditional surface embellishments, including applique and shi-sha.
* Mehndi (or henna), from mixing the paste to creating your design.
* Adapting Indian textiles, such as the toran and chakla, for tribal-fusion dancewear.
* Extensive bibliography and guide to historical research of Middle Eastern costume.

Very Informational.......2007-06-27
I have been looking for information on belly dance costume making. This one was the very helpful (especially for my personal needs). I found the information on making shi-shas and have been doing them on a table cloth for Tarot reading.
Anyone who has the ability to sew or conceptualize a costume will be able to structure their own outfit, with authenticity. Highly recommended!
Useful!.......2007-03-14
One of the more concise information sources on tribal costuming - focusing on construction and sources.
Simply Written.......2007-01-19
"From Turban to Toe Ring" is a well written and informative book on Tribal style costuming for the experienced garment maker.

Great resource for costumers who are costuming plays like "Arabian Nights", "Aladdin's Lamp" etc. A real help.
Great How To.......2006-06-27
This is a great book for "how to" create tribal gear without having to be a sewing guru! Finally nice simple way of making tassles!

Customer Reviews:
Great Overview of Costume Styles.......2006-04-19
This small book graphically demonstrates the differences among the various styles of Middle Eastern dance costumes. It would be of assistance to any dancer, costume designer, or dance historian.
Great little resource; mix and match inspiration!.......2004-04-06
At only about 40 pages long, this book isn't going to take up too much space on your shelves! It is, however, a nifty little compendium of different belly dance 'looks', grouped according to basic classifications (bedlah, beladi dress, tribal and so on) and illustrated with clear, simple line drawings. There is also a good quantity of background information in these pages (though little that an experienced dancer is likely to find new!) This is a great little book to thumb through for inspiration, and I'll be coming back to it again and again. There's nothing particularly 'new' or innovative in it, but there doesn't need to be.
It is important to note that this is not a book on how to make costumes, though it does give a few ideas on what can be used or adapted for some components. AS the title suggests, this provides you with a 'visual vocabulary' - a selection of style fundamentals from which you will be able to build design ideas of your own. Even if you're not into the 'mix and match' design, even just photocopying the line drawings and experimenting with different colour combinations will lead to a wealth of design ideas...

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Coming of Age Novel..........2006-08-25
Moni Matteson, graduate student, finds herself undeniably attracted to her speech teacher, Katherine Cunningham. However, the attraction is at a distance and only colors Moni's dreams. That is, until Moni is hired to teach summer swimming classes with Katherine. As the summer progresses, the women become fast friends, but the attraction simmers just below the surface. Finally giving into her own frustrations, Katherine kisses a surprised Moni and the romance begins.
In the background, Katherine tries to keep up appearances by going on a date with fellow professor David Shanks. David continues to ask Katherine out again, but is denied by his co-worker. Feeling jilted, David hovers around the new couple and finally realizes they are just that... a romantic couple and not just friends. He takes this information to the university. Moni is so certain Katherine is going to break things off that she tries to do it first. Katherine reaffirms her love for the younger woman and convinces her they'll find a way through the situation. Physical intimacy between Moni and Katherine is at the PG-13 level.
This reader generally likes Martin's reading. As in `Dawn of the Dance,' her characters are interesting and likable. This story touches on difficult topics and keeps the reader interested throughout the book. The tale includes not only an unlikely romance between Moni and Katherine, it also includes a dangerous stalker and a serious look at social norms/school rules. Recommended for a quiet evening or two in your favorite chair.
Heartbreaking Reality.......2006-08-01
This love story was so real. Martin does it again with her characterization. I got into understanding both Moni and Katherine.
Don't miss this one...it's a keeper.
good book ,full of romance and suspense!!.......2006-03-08
I really liked this book and the two main characters Moni and Katherine. It was good that they were friends first and only went out after knowing each other for like 5 months.I also recommend Legacy of Love.
Tremendous! Emotionally moving novel.......2006-01-06
I absolutely loved this story. The writing had me consumed with the characters on the second page. I was immediately back in high school. I have always loathed bullies. I remember standing up to the bullies in high school on behalf of a couple classmates who were too shy or intimidated to fend for themselves and getting no where - so terrible.
The heartbreaking first romance was beautifully depicted.
Every moment between Monica and Katherine (Moni's romance in grad school) was a jewel. The writing is a wonderful delight and I did not want the story to end (although I was glad to see them leave the university that was horribly anti-female).
My heart really broke for Paige and I would love to read a novel with her story.
Do not miss this book - I know I will read it again.
Empowering, Visceral Story of Love.......2003-02-08
If you are a reader who wants to be drawn into a contemporary story of empowering, visceral love between two emotionally mature and complicated women,...You will not be disapointed but rather enraptured in the slow fall and the sustained dramatic rush between teacher and student, entrapped in a university setting in the midwest.
As always, Marianne K. Martin weaves within the love story, contemporary issues and obstacles that lesbian women face when their love in this scenario is threatened by the archaic, oppressive, hierarchy of some of today's institutions of so called higher education.
Marianne K. Martin with Dawn of the Dance, Legacy of Love, Love in the Balance, and her latest, Mirrors, proves to be one of America's most talented of new emerging writers of Romance novels for women. We look forward to a long and prolific career!

Book Description
IT IS SOMETIME AFTER the turn of the century in Lamptown, Ohio, a working-class town filled with factory girls. "Powell understands how small towns work," wrote the Boston Globe, "the ways in which this is good, and the ways in which it is poisonous; the whole book is suffused with yearning for the world beyond." Every Thursday night at the Casino Dance Hall above Bauer's Chop House and across the street from Elsinore Abbott's Bon Ton Hat Shop and Bill Delaney's Saloon and Billiard Parlor, women and a few men gather to escape their pedestrian lives in fantasy, and sometimes to live out these fantasies. Observing all are the novel's two young protagonists, Morry, who dreams of becoming an architect and developer, and Jen, an unsentimental orphan of fourteen who, abandoned by her mother, dreams of escape.
Customer Reviews:
Dawn Powell at Her Best.......2005-11-11
I previously read Dawn Powell's The Golden Spur, which was a combination of Dorothy Parker's wit and Iris Murdoch's use of a multitude of characters, and liked it enough to purchase and read Dance Night. Of the two, Dance Night is, by far, the better. Powell has created two characters - Morry and Jen - whom you come to care about, while also accurately depicting small town life in the early 1900s and how it is to be young. Her female characters such as Morry's mother, Elsinore, and, particularly, Jen, are complex and well rounded, which is refreshing, given that the novel was written in 1930. Though it is not as humorous as The Golden Spur, Powell still utilizes her wit with occasional one-liners that are capable of making you laugh out loud. Definitely worth reading, and further proof that more of her novels should be reprinted.
Coming of Age in Lamptown.......2002-11-10
Dawn Powell (1897-1965) received little attention in her lifetime, but her novels are now in print and accessible due to the critical efforts of Gore Vidal and Tim Page, among others. She is an "autobigraphical" writer, and her novels fall into two groups: 1. the earlier "Ohio" novels which are based on Powell's childhood and adolescence in small-town Ohio in the early 20th Century and 2. the later "New York novels which are heavily satirical and describe Greenwich Village where Powell spent most of her adult life.
Powell wrote "Dance Night" in 1930, and it is an early novel in the "Ohio" group. It describes the fictitous small-town of Lamptown, Ohio in the early 20th century. There are gritty pictures of the local bars and saloons and of the railroad men who frequented them. There a pictures of the factories which were the chief employers of both men and the young women. The book focuses on the life of the working class in Lamptown, with their cramped, limited ambitions and opportunities, their rickety homes, and their sexual repressions and liasions. (Books such as this remind me of George Gissing, a Victorian novelist who remains too little known, and who depicted somewhat similar scenes and people in London.)
The two primary characters in the novel are Morry Abott a young man on the verge of adulthood and Jen St. Clair, a young girl just beginning adolescence who has been adopted from an orphanage. The book is how they come of age, sexually and emotionally, and how they attempt in their own ways (including their frustrated relationship with each other) to leave Lamptown. Morry, in particular, seems based upon Powell herself (she generally uses male protagonists in her books that I have read) and the frustrations she experienced in the rural midwest and her dream of a life of glamor, freedom, and adventure (sexual and otherwise) in New York.
In the novel, Morry lives with his mother who runs a small woman's hat shop, the Bon Ton. The father is a travelling salesman and mostly absent. When he is present, things are very ugly.
The title "Dance Night" derives from the chief social activity in Lamptown, the Thursday evening dances. Morry, his mother, and the young factory girls of Lamptown frequent the dances to flirt, dance, and arrange dates and sexual encounters.
There is a great deal of emphasis in the book on furtive, repressed sexual encounters between the young men and women of Lamptown. There is always a hope of escape -- then and now -- based primarily on the dream of sexual liberation. The book is also a story of economic change and ambition at the time of the beginning of the Depressions. The book shows the passing of chance and the attempt to make a quick dollar without thought or training.
The story is really within the American tradition of the coming of age novel -- of the young man finding himself. The book gives a memorable picture of Lamptown. But it leaves its main character Morry as he departs Lamptown in search of broader horizons and an uncertain future. This is an excellent, little-known American novel.
American Classic.......1999-07-25
This novel of early 20th century Ohio deserves a place with the novels of Willa Cather and Theodore Dreiser. Unlike Dawn Powell's satirical New York novels, this is a straightforward and touching story of a young man growing up and growing out of a stifling small town. The story paints a wonderful picture of a simpler time in our country. This portrait, along with Powell's knack for characterization and interesting plot turns, make the book a treasure.
I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.......1999-06-03
Dawn Powell is without a doubt one of the most remarkable writers of this century. Anyone who wants to know how this country truly looked, sounded, and felt in the 30's, 40's & 50's owes it to themselves to stock up on her books. Her New York novels, like "The Locusts Have No King", can be almost savage in their bitingly hilarious portayals of life in mid-century Manhattan and Greenwich Village. "Dance Night" is something else, entirely. Powell brings the grubby town of Lamptown, Ohio to aching life; you won't soon forget her finely-etched characters and their desperate efforts to create some happiness among the cargo trains and factory whistles and backsteet affairs that define the limits of their lives at the dawn of the Great Depression. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Powell fans may want to order a copy of "The Best of Dawn Powell", as it contains "Dance Night", "Turn Magic Wheel", and a collection of short stories.
An excellent novel, but not her very best.......1999-01-18
The four stars are simply because, as a huge Dawn Powell fan, I feel that some of her other novels are a little more well rounded. Having said that, I feel that four stars for Dawn Powell is the equivilent of five stars for anyone else. Dance Night is an engaging and easy to read novel, with Powell's usual flair for nailing character types. I highly recommend this novel, but more importantly, I recommend all of Dawn Powell's works You never develop too much compassion for the main characters, but the wit and insight with which they are drawn is really what makes them so enjoyable. Do yourself a favor and start reading Dawn Powell today.
Book Description
Since the earliest days of the film industry, mainstream films have been banned for their sexual, religious, social, and political content. Forbidden Films traces the efforts to censor 125 films, ranging from the silent Birth of a Nation to Schlindler's List. This fascinating reference examines the continued efforts to regulate the industry, providing a summary of each banned film-including production details, censorship history, and suggestions for further reading.
Coverage includes:
* Early efforts to regulate the movie industry, such as the Hays Code in 1922 and the Motion Picture Production Code in 1930
* The emergence of the Catholic League of Decency, which wielded extensive power for nearly forty years
* The reasoning behind different types of film censorship-including racism and anti-Semitism, sexual "indecency," and the fear of Communism
* Classic and contemporary films that have faced censorship, for sexual content (Last Tango in Paris, A Streetcar Named Desire), social content (Basic Instinct, Of Human Bondage), political content (Anna and the King, Revenge at Daybreak), religious content (La Dolce Vita, The Last Temptation of Christ), and violence content (Natural Born Killers, Scarface)
* Appendixes profiling the directors of the banned films, films classified according to the reason for their censorship or ban, and a listing of 125 additional challenged, censored, and banned films.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-05-24
Of interest mainly as a reference source, but a risk for the casual reader. Each of the 125 entries contains a summary of the film's context, a sketch of the censorship travails, and a brief bibliography -- encompassing on the average, one to three pages for each entry. Considering the subject-matter, the discussion style remains curiously colorless and detached. Despite the suggestive title, there's clearly no exploitation of the contents. And yet, the text could use some pepping up -- well-chosen photographs would have helped. Moreover, there's no apparent logic behind the films chosen for inclusion, no particular point to the "sampling", and since many of the entries are obscure to the average film-goer, its value as a reference is restricted. Nonetheless, for someone wanting an easily encompassed glimpse of film censorship world-wide, the book may fit the bill.
Hugely inaccurate.......2003-02-12
It doesn't take long to find errors in this book: just read the wholly inaccurate plot synopsis of The Last Picture Show, which is hardly obscure or difficult to find on video, and thus would have been easy to check.
Or how about the reference to a film receiving an R rating from the MPAA *several years prior to the establishment of the MPAA's rating system*?
Had this been a book of insights or analysis, a few such lapses might have been forgivable. But this is a dry reference work, with little interpretation by the author: and dry reference works require a higher standard of accuracy.
A touch of free speech with a sense of lacking.......2002-09-27
Even though this book brings important items out to light, the work itself is lacking and at times incomplete. It also has a strong sense of sensasionalism to it, think of watching NBC on daily news. The mention of films like The Great Dictator as items under censorship and controversy is in itself sensasionalistic, as opposed to Citizen Kane which is not mentioned at all, gives a better idea of how subtle and hyped this work is, besides, the constant reference to the De Grazia book by title Banned Films: Movies, Censors and the First Amendment, makes it look like it is a copy of such book and no actual research was ever done to actualize, itemize or distinguish one text from the other. In short this book could be helpful on legal matters and cross reference from one legal case to another, since it does provide the actual case numbers and states where cases where trialed (picture yourself battling the Supreme court and having this book as a resource for enlightment on appeals, injunctions and motions), as far as film is concerned, I personally know of at least 125 more banned films within one decade alone and after the Hays Production Code or the Christian Legion of Decency to write a book on. Sova deserves credit for sticking it out with the female stars and the sex/erotic/porn oriented genre, but I for one think of film as a much broader medium in which the powers that be relish to exert their power to limit the means of expression whether this be of religious, sexual or political nature. Recommended for the high school reader with a strong suggestion to do further reading
Book Description
Peta Wilson has joined the ranks of television's new breed of kick-ass heroines in La Femme Nikita. She plays Nikita, who has been wrongly convicted of a murder and is pressed into service by a secret government group: Section One. Wilson brings an extraordinary mix of compassion, vulnerability, and tough-as-nails street-smarts to her role as Nikita, and the show has gone from cult hit status to its position as the number-one rated original cable drama in the U.S. La Femme Peta reveals what brought Peta Wilson to television screens across America and just where this new star is headed. It goes behind the scenes of her hit show, discusses her costars, and includes the complete three-season episode commentary. The book also discusses the show's huge following on the Internet and examines some of the best (and oddest) sites devoted to Wilson and La Femme Nikita. Featured are 16 pages of color photos.
Customer Reviews:
more La Femme Nikita.............less Peta Wilson.......2005-08-26
The title of this book is deceiving. It suggests that it is a biography of Peta Wilson, when only the first chapter is about Peta and the rest is about the show, the cast of La Femme Nikita and a chronology of each episode. It is not what I hoped it to be and wouldn't recommend to a reader looking for a biography of Peta Wilson because this book falls way short of that expectation. I wanted the biography and didn't get what I paid for................
Great La Femme Bio!.......2002-06-17
Peta Wilson and La Femme Nikita have captivated audiences from the beginning. This book gives a great overview of Peta's history, as well as the show and other characters. The photos are wonderful, and this is a must-have for any La Femme fan!
Great little book about the tv-series La Femme Nikita.......2001-06-08
I purchased this as a small companion to the soundtrack CD. Nice book that is well written. It contains some good pictures but to few in my opinion. A worthy buy if you like the tv-show.
a must have fan favorite.......2001-03-11
I love this book. The pictures, episode guide, facts about the star and her co-stars. It's an excellent guide to the first three seasons of the show. I do wish it would have had season four and five. Hopefully, there will be another book featuring the whole of the show. Pictures, all five seasons, actor backgrounds, character backgrounds, etc. But I do love this book.
If you love "Nikita", please read this!.......2000-05-24
