Book Description

A sizzling story of decadence, drama and daring outfits! Audrey realizes she's in over her head when she gets embroiled with icy-cool banker, Sterling. His ideas of adult fun are more than she can handle, so she packs her bags and walks out of his luxury Florida apartment, heading back to Washington DC in search of a regular life with a regular guy. But for a girl like Audrey, this is not as easy as it sounds. When Patrick Dugan, the charismatic owner of an old-world bar, fixes Audrey in his sights, some strange alliances are about to be formed. Within a week Audrey talks her way into a job at Patrick's bar and a room in the apartment he shares with a drag queen jazz singer called Basil. The highly sexed roommates are soon getting intimate with each other, even experimenting with games of kinky SM sex. But Audrey soon suspects that Patrick is not all that he seems. Why is he pretending to be gay? And what is he covering up for his father, a pillar of the local community? Audrey is so affected by the enigmatic, dominant barman that she doesn't realise they are connected by a mutual adversary - a cold-hearted man who will take them all down if he doesn't get what he wants.

4 out of 5 stars Surprised How Much I Liked It 4.5 Stars.......2006-12-14

I had read a couple of things by Emma Holly and didn't love or hate them. But after this book I will be reading more of Ms. Holly. The sex was hot (very important in erotica) and varied. Even the scenes involving male/male sex, which is not a thing for me, were well written and much better handled than other authors' treatment of simliar scenes.

Yes, Audrey has a lot of sex and with more than one person (although nowhere near the numbers of most more typical non-romantica erotica) and explores sub and dom relationships which involve bondage. The character is introduced in the middle of a punishment given by Sterling, her master/lover. Thier relationship has abusive overtones and Audrey leaves him and goes back to her old life in D.C. She begins staying with her best friend Tommy, who is in love with her. But soon gets a job at a bar owned by Patrick Dugan, who has been asked to look out for her, and excepts his invitation to move in with him. Patrick is trying to protect Audrey because Sterling, believing that Audrey is his possesion, is having her watched.

Patrick needs Audrey to trust him, so he pretends to be involved with Basil, the bars transvetite singer, who also comes to live at Patrick's large penthouse apartment. But Patrick is having a hard time fighting his attraction to Audrey, a natural sub. To further complicate things Basil is showing intrest in both of them. Through the course of the story Patrick must either learn to deal with his intamacy issues or lose Audrey. Audrey is learning that she can be submissive in her sex life (and plays at dominence a little) withought being misstreated. But the book deffinatly does not have your typical happily ever after ending. This is a more uncoventional love story and readers who dislike books where the characters have multiple partners, should probably skip this one. For readers who don't require monogamy enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars *THIS WAS OKAY*.......2006-07-22

I actually liked the way this started out more than the way it ended. Audrey is a goof if you ask me. She takes advantage of the one guy who is true and sincere to her. I don't enjoy the games the 3 "roommates" play. This book could be passed up and you wouldn't be missing much.

1 out of 5 stars Please.......2006-07-11

I love Emma Holly I'll be the first to admit it but this book was so wrong that I just don't know where to begin. Audrey likes to have sex. She likes to have sex with everyone. Thats basiclly the book in a nutshell. She seems to have no other qualities besides whats between her legs. Boring! Lets have alittle depth. Patrick was alittle likeable and then theres the drag queen roomate Basil (What). I don't know and I don't know if you will either. I read some other reviews and found theres to be good but unfortunetly I don't like everybody in the book having sex with one another. Mrs. Holly I would recommend giving a little more depth to your characters even tho it's erotica. If you like erotica try Rhyannon Byrd!

3 out of 5 stars Not Her Best.......2005-10-20

Emma Holly is a very versatile writer who seems to understand people in a rare way, and know every dark fantasy you've ever had, committing it to paper.

Here she veers a little off.

Audrey is much more young and naive than her usual heroines; on a vacation she happily leaves her life to become a disrespected sex slave to a complete stranger, the very old and cold Sterling.

She escapes but he plants a tracking device in her nipple ring and finds she lands back in Boston with her best friend Tommy. He is a whiny mn who worships her and desperately desires sex to the point of pathetic begging and misogynistic demands. With Tommy there are slowly escalating scenes of her dominating him, which seems odd as she is very much a submissive at that point. She even dominates his girfriend Cynthia, yet another person who worships the great and two-dimensional Audrey.

Sterling asks old friend Senator Dugan to keep an eye on her, and Dugan dcides to stick it to him. He knows his son Patrick, a bar owner, is part of the group D/s scene and asks him to master the girl.

Patrick draws Audrey in an an unbelievable stroke of luck and realizes she is too skittish for the group scene. He asks her to move in with him and asks his drag queen nightly performer (at an Irish bar in Boston? What the HELL was Holly thinking????) Basil to pretend to be his gay lover, lulling her into submission.

Patrick discovers he likes men, not as much as women though; Audrey discovers she is a weak willed spineless twit with an amazing, uh, "asset" between her legs who wants to be cossetted and spoiled by day, chained and spanked by night.

Somehow, inexplicably, she falls in love with him and refuses Sterling when he comes for her. It seems without motivation, there is no real relationship between the bar owner and his new pet.

The sex is so weak, it reads like a husband and wife of 30 years decided to try a little light spanking to spice up their sex life. The D/s is nonexistent and the best sex scenes are Basil seducing Audrey when they first meet, Basil seducing Patrick in the kitchen, and Patrick dominating Basil while Audrey watches pretending to be a dominatrix.

The characters aren't fleshed out enough and the sex scenes were A: too far apart, and B: had no sensual anticipation leading up to them.

Audrey, unlike all of her other heroines, seems like an empty-headed spoiled beauty queen and I really would have liked for just one person to not be head-over-heels in love with her. Just one. That is, besides me.

Skip it, and try "Cooking Up A Storm" or "Menage" for her typically GREAT erotica.

4 out of 5 stars Educating Audrey.......2005-07-15

Audrey is a naive young women off on a journey to sample every gourmet variety of sexual behavior she can find. She is SO varied in her ability to respond to people - male, female, and androgynes - that her claim to a B & D obsession is not all that credible, although she DOES love her pierced nipple jewlry. Her "forever"friends and sexual playmates Tommy and Cynthia are so sweet and believable, and the female impersonator Basil is WAY cool and oh so genuine. But the masterful well endowed hunk Patrick who is the overriding object of Audrey's affection turns out in the end to be a sucker for romance and enthusiastically bisexual himself! Still, this is vividly realistic and VERY graphic sexual writing. I will certasinly read more from Ms. Holly.

Some consider this comic book novel obtuse; others find it deeply intellectual. Whatever the reaction, it's hard to refute its daring originality and smooth artwork. Described as "a terrifying journey into madness," the story revolves around Clay Loudermilk as he stumbles upon the mysteries behind a snuff film. Soon he's involved with increasingly bizarre characters who hang in the air like stale cigarette smoke. Fans of movie director David Lynch who aren't already tipped to Daniel Clowes's popular work should take note.

Book Description

Daniel Clowes's first book remains a modern classic 15 years after its debut in Eightball #1, the comic book title that made Clowes a household name in comics circles. This surreal graphic novel is couched within a noir-ish detective structure and rich with recurring psychosexual motifs and imagery. The story follows a deadpan Candide named Clay Loudermilk, on a search for a former lover through a landscape that several critics have favorably compared to the works of David Lynch, Fellini, and Luis Buñuel, with elements of Dragnet and Russ Meyer films added for good measure. Clowes rigorously employs a dream logic as Clay spirals down a spare, unsettling wasteland, meeting three-eyed prostitutes, mutant waitresses, angry men with hair plugs, and orifice-less dogs with secret messages tattooed on their skin. As Clay attempts to untangle the vast conspiracy he finds himself a part of, Velvet Glove becomes a vivid and fantastic examination of futility, self-loathing and paranoia, and a masterpiece of postmodern fairy-telling,

Like A Velvet Glove returns in 2005 as Clowes and film director Terry Zwigoff put the finishing touches on Art School Confidential, the follow-up to their 2001 Academy Award-nominated film, Ghost World (based on the bestselling comic book of the same name). To be released in the late summer of 2005, Art School Confidential is sure to introduce an entirely new audience to Clowes's work, just as the Ghost World film did (pushing sales of the Ghost World graphic novel over 150,000 to date).

5 out of 5 stars Lost in dream.......2007-10-01

I am a fairly recent Clowes fan (I've been reading for a couple years...started with Ice Haven). And as with most work I love, I tend to pleasure-delay other works by the artist. That said, I read David Boring at the beginning of the year, and just picked up and went through Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron.
Where David Boring and Ice Haven definitely seemed to cohere with some, albeit demented, climax at points, this book is a veritable pandora's box of narrative. The thing is all over the place, and there are plenty of characters that show up and then disappear forever, before you even get a chance to figure out their purpose.
In that way, it definitely holds the stuff of dreams, and meanders in completely unexpected ways. It's a total mind trip with a strangely comforting ending... comforting in that it finally seems to decode some of what Clowes set up throughout the book... it's hard to explain, just check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, weird, and great........2007-09-21

I may be biased, being a big Clowes fan, but I thought this book was great. If you read David Boring or a strip Clowes did called "The Gold Mommy" (I think), and you liked that sense of pervasive nightmarish unease that Clowes is so good at creating, then you will like this book. If you are not into creepy, dark, or bizarre themes, you may want to move along.

4 out of 5 stars disturbing.......2005-11-13

Okay, this book was really hard for me to track down. I ordered it on amazon last year and it was out of stock and never shipped for months, so eventually I cancelled it. I finally got it not long ago from a comic shop.
I read the other reviews and I see what people mean. At first, I was confused. Then when I realized it was supposed to be bizarre and not make sense, I got into it. I liked it. The biggest complaint people seem to have is that it's not like "David Boring." I love his other books, and this one was good, but it is very different. It's very surreal and disturbing.
Seriously. I was extremely disturbed by some of the characters. My boyfriend asked me how it was and all I could say was "unsettling" and "bothersome" because it just makes you feel uncomfortable.
So yeah...be warned.

3 out of 5 stars Frustrating........2005-09-01

I was a fan of Ghost World and David Boring. Daniel Clowes has a knack for putting real people in a world where everything is a bit askew. This book is older than the others and reviews lead me to believe it would be a bit more insane than the other books, but I had no idea...

We follow our rather dry hero, Clay, on a bizarre odyssey as he searches for his long lost lover after recognizing her in an obscene film. Typical Clowes' formula, but Clay's path is littered with feminist warmongers, dogs with no orifices, an admirer that strongly resembles a giant potato-fish hybrid, and some of the freakiest character designs you will ever see.

The problem is the mystery, the tension, the weirdness just builds and builds and builds and there seems to be so little relief from it. The payoff just isn't satisfying. The book gave me a headache. If you enjoy Clowes' art style, there's plenty to look at here, but story-wise, it was quite disappointing. If you're new to Daniel Clowes, I suggest trying his more accessible works first.

3 out of 5 stars A failed attempt.......2005-04-22

A first glance I found this work to be engrossing, but the farther I got into the book the less sense it made. It reminded me of Charles Burns in its oddness, but then became too random and seemed more like Dada then surealism. I felt there could have been more of a tying together of the plotlines presented instead of the montage ending that left me a little more then unsatisfied. It gave a feel of "I'm tired of writting this" .
The charactors were flat compared to most of Clowes work, in truth I could not get a feel for anyone in the story. Nor did I see the big picture(if there was even one) that was presented because too little information was provided. And the any provided came across as nonsensical. It seemed like just another collection of pulp alternative work from that time. Shock value pulp at that.
I had hoped for better from one of the masters of modern comics.

Book Description

Images of the dominant female were once the exclusive property of secretive fetishists, guiltily celebrated in underground books and videos and unknown to the mainstream. Today provocative characters like the dominatrix, the unattainable goddess, and the cruel temptress have become familiar, if still controversial, figures in pop culture. Women in Control showcases images and icons from this heady world. Noted fetish photographer Larry Utley offers both the aficionado and the curious observer a visual feast of unconventional, individualistic, strong women in control of their own sexuality — and, frequently, that of those around them. Vivid tableaux range from the playful (a cowgirl in chaps hog-ties a grinning cowpoke) to the perverse (a woman is clad sensually in a live rattlesnake). Printed in a large format and lavishly illustrated, this book goes beyond documenting the expected to pay tribute to women's power in the S/M scene.

3 out of 5 stars Fetish not Femdom.......2005-11-23

One would expect (from it's title & description) a photographic journal of female dominance, but this is not what's found in this book.

Granted, the photography in this book is wonderful, but the title is deceiving to it's content. If you're looking for staged: female dominant / female submissive latex fetish photography (primarily lesbian) then this is definitely your book. But if you're looking for images portraying real life female domination in a series of female/male relationships then you should definitely look elsewhere.

Utley has done it again... Once again demonstrating his eye and appreciation for "real" images of seduction, power, play and control! The best photo anthology of the fetish fantasy scene I've ever seen! Each image manages to peel more and more layers off the private subversive world of female dominance. At times playful, at other times down right shocking, each photo reveals more insight into the role women play in the world of sexual dominance and control. Moreover... The introduction written by Mistress Miranda, a Bay Area Dominatrix, educator and writer, is eloquent and well done!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING & AMUSING...GREAT RESOURCE!!!.......2004-02-13

my background is not dissimilar to that of dr. hamilton's, and, as such, i am often asked to recommend reading material (by students and clients alike) related to the subject of human sexuality. rarely have i come across something so well-compiled as Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves. my goodness, the research is nothing short of phenomenal -- allowing the author to fill her pages with rich, full and, i might add, entertaining content.

a number of my students have not only found this book enlightening, but impetus for further study (as least in regard to the broader subject of human sexuality and it's role in psychology/society) especially important is the fact that this particular volume covers both genders--something no other offering in this field can boast.

i readily give "Skin Flutes & Velvet Glove" a 5+ star rating because it supplies a substantial and impressive amount of information in a well-written and amusing fashion. i hope dr. hamilton will continue to impart her unique, intelligent 'voice' upon those of us who find her works so delightful. how nice to read something that is just...so nicely written, so full of wonderful information, and so capable of giving us more than a few laughs along the way!! BRAVO!

5 out of 5 stars Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves.......2003-12-17

In spite of its price (new hardcover), this book was well worth it. I'm currently reading it for the second time. I own many books on genitalia, and this is by far the best. I liked the mix of facts and fun. It's an historical treasure for anyone wanting to research the topic. The "Dicktionary" and the bibliography are particularly useful. Dr. Hamilton is to be commended for this very useful (and entertaining) book!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask!.......2003-07-12

This book is hilarious! Dr. Hamilton is as humorous as she is serious and factual in presenting the sometimes awkward subject of sex and genitals. This is not material covered in Med. School for sure. I learned more from this book than I've ever learned from any medical text, "street knowledge" or "sex ed." Dr. Hamilton has written a fun, humorous, fact-filled book about almost anything and everything one has ever wondered about the organs between our legs. Because of her use of the coloquial and straight-forward, no nonsense talk approach of the subject matter...I wouldn't recommend this as a "sex ed." book for teens as much as I would recommend that every parent own a copy of this book to be better educated on the subject matter. This book is written with wit, humor and facts in a very comfortable format...While the title may be vulgar to some...the book is anything but. I enjoyed this read with a smile and occassional belly laugh, mainly because Dr. Hamilton presented answers or facts to questions I thought were too warped to ever contemplate finding an answer to. I highly recommend this book for anyone remotely curious about their private parts (or other's for that matter!).

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fresh, Fascinating!.......2003-01-22

I first learned about Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves from my girlfriend...literally! We were at a dinner party and someone mentioned some obscure acronym for male genitalia and the next thing I knew, my sweetie launched into a litany of one liners about "spare legs, squirmin' Hermans, big Macs, baloney ponys, trouser trouts, skin flutes..." and so on. We were hysterical if not a bit 'shocked' (especially after she treated us to an equally impressive list of nicknames for female genitals).

The list of names along with the interesting history of genital nicknaming certainly makes for great conversation fodder -- but Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves takes the reader far beyond this superficial falderal by delving into such topics as the connection between modern-day religion and ancient genital worship; the history of circumcision (more disturbing than one might imagine); odd (really odd!) things folks do to their own 'flutes' and 'gloves'; just to name a few. Dr. Hamilton also provides clear and fascinating info about genitals in general (nice chapters on male/female anatomy - the section on "the black rose" was mind boggling!)

Engaging yet easy read, memorable/unusual factoids, highly entertaining... highly recommended!!!

2 out of 5 stars Left me limp!.......2003-01-15

After reading reviews from readers on this site I was excited about enlighting my knowledge on the male and female "goods", but found myself bored within the first couple of chapters. The so called doc - constantly kills the interest with one liners that leave you yearning for nothing. She desperately tries to appear witty and experienced only to come off as a preformance anxiety filled writer(2-3 stars at best). The physical layout of the book is a desk top publishing nightmare - with the margins so far in on all sides to give minimal words per page, yet streching the length of the book (perhaps an attempt of overconpensation, hehe). This book had huge potential and its a shame a better writer didn't grasp the idea between his/her hands before Hamilton. I'm guessing if you are easily entertained and you've got 20+ bucks to spare, then this would be a good book. Other wise, spend the money on your significant other and learn about the curiosities first hand!

    Book Description

This landmark study analyzes and compares the ideologies that develop among unequal social groups. Mary Jackman employs a unique national survey to investigate all three of the most prominent relations of inequality in the United States: gender, class, and race. Where other scholars have emphasized conflict as the emblem of intergroup oppression, Jackman proposes a theory in which both dominant and subordinate groups maneuver to avoid open hostility as they strive to control resources within the confines of their mutual relationship.
Hostility, Jackman points out, creates resistance in a relationship. Dominant groups therefore try to preempt the use of force by following a velvet-glove strategy of "sweet persuasion." They are drawn especially to the ideological mold of paternalism, in which the coercion of subordinates is grounded in love rather than hate. Dominant-group members pronounce authoritatively on the needs and welfare of all and then profess to "provide" for those needs. Love, affection, and praise are offered to subordinates on strict condition that they comply with the terms of the unequal relationship. Whether in the home or in the arena of class or race relations, paternalism wraps control and authority in an ideological cocoon in which discriminatory actions are defined as benevolent and affection is made contingent on compliance.
Jackman's emphasis on the practice of coercive love in race, class, and gender relations is sure to generate controversy and further research. Sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, and anyone interested in group ideology will find here a provocative challenge to conventional views.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Profound and intriguing..........2005-03-02

By decoupling discrimination from hostility, Jackman persuasively demonstrates how paternalism plays a significant role in maintaining inequality in long-term, interdependent relationships between social groups. (She does NOT argue that paternalism plays a role in ALL intergroup relationships and is very clear to delineate the specific types of intergroup dynamics and histories that give rise to paternalistic ideologies as the primary justification/mechanism for maintaining social stratification.) Her work -- although more sociological, than social psychological -- bolsters and supports the modern prejudice research done by other scholars in the areas of race (Gaertner & Dovidio, Katz & Hass, McConahay), gender (Glick & Fiske, Swim, Tougas and colleagues) and sexual orientation (Morrison & Morrison). This work will -- no doubt -- be controversial, especially among those who wish to deny the ongoing presence of inequality in society and who will seek to argue that it is just another political ploy by liberal to further a leftist agenda. However, Jackman methodically supports her argument with empirical research and has carefully outlined the various components of her argument. Although it has not been trumpeted as loudly or widely as it should, during the 1980s and 90s the political philosophies of the Left were dealt a series of hammer blows, which brought the entire system into disrepute. In the halls of Western academia, that last great bastion of Leftist theorizing, strenuous effort has been put into breathing new life into their outmoded arguments.

In this book, Dr. Mary Jackman, Chair of the Department of Sociology, University of California, Davis, begins with the premise that *every* unequal human relationship is based upon exploitation. This is classic Marxist thinking (which was later extended to non-economic relationships), but in classic Marxist and Leftist thinking this prevalent exploitation inevitably leads to class/group consciousness and class/group conflict. In the real world, capitalism and marriage and so forth do not lead to conflict, but to harmony. To explain this contradiction, Dr. Jackman's argues that within an exploitive relationship, neither side truly desires conflict, and as such the dominant group invents a form of ideological persuasion that causes the subordinate group to embrace their exploitation.

Overall I found this to be a dull and lifeless read. The book is written in a dry, even turgid, academese that shows that it was intended for the academic reader, not the general reader. I found her pro forma assumption that any relationship between dissimilar parties is automatically exploitive to be based on ideology, rather than real-life, which is evidenced by the fact that she does not even try to defend it. With the assumptions challenged, the arguments of the book fall in upon themselves. I salute Dr. Jackman's Leftist orthodoxy, which I'm sure will enhance her credentials among her peers, but I deplore her unthinking dogmatism in the service of a worn-out ideology.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Students of Social Stratification.......2001-05-09

In this thoughtful piece, Jackman turns conventional wisdom regarding inequality on its head. The work presents a truly provocative challenge to liberal ideology and traditional understandings of race, class and gender relations. Perhaps paternalistic efforts to reduce inequality serve to perpetuate the status quo rather than increase equality between groups. A must read for students of social stratification and those interested in brining about the reduction of inequality.

    4 out of 5 stars Dolley Madison.......2002-05-06

I thought that the book was very informative. But what i disliked was the anount of time it took the authour to reach his point.I enjoyed reading the description and detail of what her life was all about but felt that it was sometimes hard to tell where the facts ended and the fiction began. Why did i read this book in the first place?I read it for a school paper and outlined the whole thing. I loved the stories about the characters that she met and how she climbed her way up from the bottom. I thought that this book was great for showing her life and how she as one woman can make such a huge difference. I reccomend this book to all those who are interested in the aftermath of the revoulutionary war and want to know what went on behind the scenes at the white house.

This is a cookbook that is sort of like a coffee book table. It's beautiful with it's pink colors and there are pretty watercolor prints within the book. Great recipes, easy to read. For NASCAR fans there's a section of recipes from race car drivers, etc.--Martinsville is the home of Martinsville Speedway.

You can still get the book from the Charity League.
