Book Description

Long ago, a little girl named Laura Ingalls lived in a little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters, Mary and Carrie, and their good old bulldog, Jack. Winter was just around the corner, and Laura worked hard to help make the little house ready for the cold days ahead. Soon there was frost on the windows and snow on the ground, but Laura and her folks were warm and cozy in their snug little house in the Big Woods.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers. Now for the first time, the youngest readers can share her adventures in these very special picture books adapted from Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved storybooks. Renée Graef's warm paintings, inspired by Garth Williams' classic Little House illustrations, bring Laura and her family lovingly to life.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Gifts.......2007-01-21

This is a great book for reminding children of simpler times. Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with the bare minimum available to them, but with such joy, it can make even children wish for that kind of life.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable introduction to the real thing.......2006-10-04

I have to laugh at those reviewers who seem so offended by these books! Have you actually read the originals?! These books simply take small exerpts from the originals and simplify them for a younger audience. I too absolutely loved the original books and still do. But I'm not going to be able to read them to my 3 year old without her losing interest. Therefore, I share these shorter versions with her and she loves them. When she's older (the originals are recommended for 8-12 year olds) I'll give her the originals. In the meantime these are fabulous and I very much doubt Laura Ingalls Wilder would take offense to them. Seriously, calm down!!

5 out of 5 stars I really like it!.......2006-07-10

My favorite character is Laura. These are all great books. I have read almost all of them. I just need one more. I really REALLY like the books.

4 out of 5 stars A dear story with delicious pictures for young and old alike!.......2006-01-05

The whole entire "My First Little House Books" series is a wonderful way to introduce little ones to the Little House series! The pictures are absolute feasts for little and big eyes alike!
This story in particular is a great illustration of how Christmases used to be. It tells and illustrates the simple joys the children would experience at Christmas time - like candy canes, mittens, and for Laura - her own precious rag doll, Charlotte!
Definately a book you will want to add to your little ones collection!

4 out of 5 stars Lighten up a little!.......2005-11-15

I really love the "official" Little House books. My four year-old likes me to read them a little at a time, but the illustrations are black and white, and she likes seeing the color illustrations. These books are a very good way to introduce little ones to Laura's world, get them interested, and THEN start reading the original Little House books. The people who are fussing over the books need to chill a little - these are meant to be an intro to Laura;s world, not the end-all and be-all. Y'all know that Laura Wilder would be laughing uproariously at all this fussing, btw.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't get into any of these stories.......2006-11-22

Since the back cover description is already given on this page, I'll skip straight to my review:

Ana Leigh has a lot of fans, but I'm afraid that I'm not one of them. I didn't find THE MACKENZIES: LILY all that great. In fact, I never even finished it. I felt that the heroine was a bit of a nosy shrew, constantly sticking her nose in where it didn't belong and presuming a lot of things that weren't even true. And the hero was a bit of a stuffed shirt. He was so proud that he got quite irritating after a while. I just couldn't really like either of them, so I didn't really care whether they got together or not. Two stars.

I was hoping for a good read from Carolyn Davidson's A TIME FOR ANGELS, as I'd really enjoyed her story "Stormwalker's Woman" from Harlequin's "One Starry Christmas" collection. But I'm afraid that a very annoying hero ruined this story. He was so quick to leap to conclusions without even trying to find out if they were true or not. He just came across as a man with a rod shoved up his...nether regions. And, as another reviewer has stated, the heroine's reasons for refusing the hero were very contrived, even for a romance novel. A shame, as this author has done it better. Two stars.

Kate Bridges' story THE LONG JOURNEY HOME had so much potential, but the delivery left a lot to be desired. First off, it stretched the bounds of believability quite a bit that the heroine took so long to recognize the hero. Even if I believed that my husband was dead, even if it had been two years since I'd last seen him, even if half of his face was scared and he had a beard, I'd still recognize him instantly. It just didn't ring true with me that the heroine didn't recognize him for such a long time. It wasn't like she'd been forced to marry him, it was a love match. Wouldn't she recognize the man that she loved, no matter what the circumstances?

But that wasn't the only problem with this story. After their initial meeting, there was hardly any interaction between the hero and the heroine. This was a situation fraught with tension (considering that the heroine was engaged to someone else), yet the author seemed to shy away from exploring that tension. And the character development was somewhat lacking, as well. I just didn't feel like I knew the characters. I didn't really feel their pain at being seperated. I think this book might have been better if it had been developed into a full-length novel. But the way it is here, it isn't an engrossing read. Two stars.

Most anthologies are a hit-or-miss proposition. Unfotunately, this collection was a miss. There are far better Christmas romance out there. See my list "Christmas romance books worth buying" for a list of my favorites. Skip FRONTIER CHRISTMAS, unless you're a fan of Ana Leigh and want to complete your "Mackenzies" collection.

3 out of 5 stars Three Heart Warming Stories.......2006-11-03

"Frontier Christmas" is a collection of three romances set in the late 1800's around Christmas time.

In "The MacKenzies: Lily" by Ana Leigh, Lily is a Harvey Girl in New Mexico. Lily has enjoyed her job but her Harvey House is about to close and she's ready to move back home. While she's happy to be going home, she is worried about the children of Sheriff Grady Delaney. Grady is a single father and Lily is convinced he is neglecting his children. The two are constantly fighting and Grady can't wait until she leaves. But when Grady is hurt and Lily nurses him back to health, he realizes he doesn't want her to leave after all.

This was a delightful romance. Lily is a strong heroine and Grady is a loving father, despite what Lilly thinks. His children are delightful with more than a few tricks up their sleeves. Ana Leigh does a good job of weaving history into the story. The ending drags on a bit, but it's a good story overall.

In "A Time for Angels" by Carolyn Davidson, Honey Bell Morris is struggling to raise her five-year-old sister, Hope, after their parents die in an accident. Money is tight and Honey worries that soon there won't be enough money to pay their bills. Still, when Joseph Bennett gets lost during a snowstorm, Honey doesn't hesitate to give the elderly man shelter and food. Joseph is very grateful and eager to reward Honey, but his grandson Zachary is afraid that Honey is after Joseph's money. But soon his feelings of suspicion turn into other feelings.

"A Time for Angels" was my favorite story in the book. It's a feel good, Cinderella type story and the Christmas setting adds to the magic. The sparks flying between Honey and Zachary are very real and believable. Hope is also very believable, a five-year-old who has already experienced too much sadness and loss, who wants to believe in Santa Claus and Angels, but isn't quite sure if they exist. It's not a perfect story; Honey's reason for not wanting to marry Zach is contrived, even by romance novel standards. Still, I really enjoyed it.

In "The Long Journey Home" by Kate Bridges, Mountie Logan Sutcliffe disappeared on his wedding night two years ago and everyone is convinced that he is dead. Logan finally makes it back home only to find out that his wife, Melodie, is engaged to another man. Now Melodie has to decided whether or not to stay married to Logan and worry about him every time he does his job or to get married to much older but safer Donald Dawson. Will Melodie follow her head or her heart?

This was my least favorite story in the collection. I think the length of the story hurt it. I never felt anything for the characters. It would have been much better as a full length novel that spent more time on what happened to both Melodie and Logan in the two years he was gone. The romance between Donald and Melodie was never believable so there was no real conflict in the story. It was a good idea for a novel that never quite worked in novella form

All in all, "Frontier Christmas" was a collection of heartwarming stories and a perfect read for this time of year.

4 out of 5 stars A Finish To The MacKenzie's + 2 More..........2005-02-14

I purchased this book for Ana Leigh's final story (Lily) in the MacKenzie's series. I enjoyed Grady & Lily's story. There wasn't much to it but it was enjoyable & gave a nice ending to this series. Lily (Cleve & Adee's daughter) had left the Triple M & was working as a Harvey girl in New Mexico in hopes of finding love. Grady is the town sheriff who is raising 3 kids on his own. Lily quickly formed a bond with the children & it didn't take long for her to realize that she loved Grady as well. Be sure you don't miss the rest of the MacKenzie series. This is the best series that I've ever read. I would sure like to be a part of that family. They are the meaning of "family".

Up next was A Time For Angels by Carolyn Davidson. I thought the book was good but not great. I didn't feel the characters had much personality & I couldn't understand how Honey could fall in love with Zachary in basically a matter of hours of re-meeting him. She had met this man 6 months prior when she went to the bank where Zachary was the president & he basically insulted her by suggesting that if she would have sex with him he would give her a loan to pay off her house. With Honey being the pure, innocent person that she was I just couldn't understand how she could fall in love with him after just 1 dinner together. Aside from that this book does have a good storyline. It's not a story I would highly recommend.

The last story in this book is The Long Journey Home by Kate Bridges. I thought the story line for this book was awesome. After just saying their vows Logan is called away to duty before he & Melodie even have a chance to consummate their marriage. Logan doesn't return that night as he has promised & is later pronounced dead. After 2 years Melodie has agreed to marry another man & all of a sudden Logan reappears. Can he capture Melodie's heart once again? I really enjoyed this story.

Overall I would recommend this book for women that like short stories but don't necessarily need the hot & steamy scenes. If that's what you enjoy you won't find much here.

4 out of 5 stars 3 great authors, 3 great stories!.......2003-12-06

What better way to get into the spirit of the holidays then to curl up with this truly outstanding trilogy.

First up is LILY by award winning author Ana Leigh. A continuation of her Mackenzie saga, Lily is Cleve and Adee's daughter who has struck out on her own as a Harvey girl. Losing her heart to three motherless children has put Lily in a terrible predicament, it seems she is about to lose it also to their handsome father, Sheriff Grady Delaney.

A TIME FOR ANGELS is Carolyn Davidson's contribution. Poor but proud Honoria "Honey" Morris is about to lose her farm, and Christmas is looking very bleak for her and her little sister. Until one snowy night before the holiday, an old man, lost and almost half frozen stumbles onto their property, and into their hearts. Much to the dismay of his hard hearted grandson, skeptical banker Zachary Bennett, the Morris girls have found a temporary home caring for his lonely grandfather. But Honey's warm nurturing seems to be finding a way to thaw out the ice in Zachary also.

The last in this Christmas collection is by Kate Bridges. THE LONG JOURNEY HOME is a story of a true Christmas miracle for widowed Melody Sutcliffe. Her husband, Mountie Logan Sutcliffe has returned from the dead, and will do anything to win his true love back!

Who can resist these wonderful, gifted authors? Grab a copy of FRONTIER CHRISTMAS, a warm cup of cocoa, and curl up under the tree for a truly magical Christmas read!

3 out of 5 stars One story worth a re-read, the rest are just okay.......2005-10-24

From the back cover:

1) Loving Sarah by Madeline Baker: A white woman learns the true meaning of Christmas from the Apache brave who has opened her heart to love.

2) A Christmas Angel by Robin Lee Hatcher: A motherless little girl's wish for a Christmas angel comes true with the arrival of a beautiful stranger at her father's Idaho farm.

3) The Homecoming by Norah Hess: An innocent bride finds special joy in the Christmas homecoming of a husband who married her on the rebound, then marched away from their Kentucky homestead to fight for his country's independence.

4) The Greatest Gift of All by Connie Mason: A lonely young Colorado widow rediscovers the magic of love when her two children befriend a traveler who bears an uncanny resemblance to St. Nicholas.

And my review:

Madeline Baker's story was just okay. I've read a few of her works, and I've always felt the same thing. Fairly entertaining while you read them, but the characters just don't stay with you after you turn that final page. Three stars.

Robin Lee Hatcher's story was my favorite in the book, and one I've re-read a couple of times. Very sweet and innocent, with lovable characters, I found this story quite touching. There wasn't an element of this story that a didn't like. And Phoebe, the little girl, was a great character, not just a flat plot device, which I really liked. This story was the reason I kept this book. Five stars.

Norah Hess's story was certainly not what I expected it would be. From reading the back cover blurb, I thought it would be a story of reunited love, but it was not so, which made it an interesting read. The thing was, I found the heroine to be more than a little stupid, which really detracted from my enjoyment of the story. I think the reader is supposed to sympathize with her, but I had no sympathy for someone who made their own mess. Not only that, but she knew it was a stupid mistake while she was doing it, yet she barrelled ahead and did it anyway. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I wanted her to have more self-respect, and though she did have some in the end, it just didn't save the book for me. Also, I hated the hero's "I slept with her, but didn't court her, so it shouldn't bother you because it didn't mean anything" attitude. I am SO sick of the virgin woman with the slut man. One star.

Connie Mason's story was one that I had to force myself to finish. I could not like the heroine. She was just so bitter and mean to her children. She professed over and over to love her kids, but then she was always getting angry and yelling at them for just being children. Loving your kids means more than just taking care of their physical needs. Just because you're bitter doesn't mean your children can't enjoy a little magic. One star.

All together, a three star book. I would recommend trying to find this at a thrift or used-book store, as it's not worth buying it brand new, but Robin Lee Hatcher's story does make it worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Three short stories - different -but worth reading!.......2002-07-16

In the first story Catherine Palmer returns to the town called Hope and picks up the lives of the familiar characters. A surprising twist makes this one especially good. The second story is by a relatively new author to me, but now I will read more of hers since this one is great...The last is an entirely new concept to me, that of the courtship of a senior couple. Most Christian romance stories steer away from those folks in their sunset years, but this one is sweet and believable. I would recommend this book. Each author gives the reader a glance into her own life and some interesting recipes are included as well.

4 out of 5 stars A must read........2001-02-26

Catherine Palmer has again written a fabulous book. In this anthology she revisits a town called Hope and tells the story of Rolf Rustemeyer. I have read all of the books in the 'A town called Hope' series and this story lets me revisit my favourite series. Readers can also watch the lovable German farmer Ralf find his true love of the Kansas praire.

Included in this anthology are stories by Elizabeth White and Peggy Stoks. Both of these women are fabulous authors and their love for the Lord is evident in their stories. Annie and Betsy make wonderful heroines and I fell in love with them as well as their men, Seneca Jones and Elmore Determan.

This book is a must read for all Catherine Palmer fans and everyone who loved the 'A town called Hope' series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book! Traditional!.......2004-07-10

I rate this book 5 stars out of 5.

This book is a "Chapter Book", and as such, is an adaptation/collection of Christmas scenes from the other books in the "Little House on the Prarie" series. The time of Christmas, especially in the past, was a joyous, at times quiet and spiritual, celebration. Unlike our modern times of going to Disneyland or loud parties, "Christmas Stories" reveals the simple but true pleasures of family gatherings and preparing meals together, or even the excitement of merely "trimming" the Christmas tree. This wondrous time of simple family life is brought out in revealing and heartwarming details from the viewpoint of a little girl progressively getting older as the chapters go by.

Don't get me wrong, not all was fun and celebrations. The book revealed hard times and hardship, but all faced by a family working together and trusting in God.

I especially recommend this book to parents longing to raise their kids with just a bit more traditional flavor than what our modern politically correct public schools would allow. A chapter a day, read to and discussed with your kids (elementary through middle school) a week before Christmas would do an awful lot to instill the heartwarming feeling of a cozy traditional family Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for 'Little House' Fans.......2005-10-12

Past LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE BOOKS have contained one large story. While those have always been enjoyable, there's a chance that the newest release from Laura Ingalls Wilder, A LITTLE HOUSE CHRISTMAS TREASURY, is the most enjoyable LITTLE HOUSE release in years. A LITTLE HOUSE CHRISTMAS TREASURY is made up of six short stories, and one Christmas carol. Each short story features Laura as a young child, except for two - which both star Almanzo.

CHRISTMAS IN THE BIG WOODS - This story takes place in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. In this story, Laura is a mere four-years-old, and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her relatives and Santa Claus. 5/5 stars.

CHRISTMAS ON THE PRAIRIE - This story takes place in Indian Territory, when Laura is six-years-old. This Christmas, rain has fallen non-stop, but there has been no sign of snow, and everyone knows that Santa and his reindeer can only find children if there is snow to guide their sleigh, so Mary and Laura think that Santa won't be visiting them this year. That is, until a surprise greets them on Christmas morning. 5/5 stars.

CHRISTMAS ON PLUM CREEK - This story takes place in Plum Creek, Minnesota. Laura is now eight-years-old, and she and Mary are worried that Santa won't be visiting them, because their new home has no fireplace. After all, how can Santa leave you presents, if there is no fireplace for him to enter your home by? Luckily, Ma assures the girls that Santa will find them, and helps them realize the true spirit of Christmas. 5/5 stars.

CHRISTMAS FOR FARMER BOY - This story takes place in Malone, New York, but doesn't star Laura and her family. This story is all about Almanzo Wilder, and his time dining with his family over a Christmas feast, and making merry with his aunts, uncles, and cousins. All of whom have decided to spend the holidays at the Wilder family farm. 5/5 stars.

CHRISTMAS DURING THE LONG WINTER - This story takes place in De Smet, in the Dakota Territory. Laura is quickly growing up, and is now helping her Ma and Pa take care of her younger sisters, along with Mary. The winter is too harsh for Christmas celebrations, so, when the weather turns a bit cooler, and Christmas is long over, the girls and their family, along with a few special neighbors, celebrate Christmas in May. 5/5 stars.

CHRISTMAS IN THE GOLDEN YEARS - This is the only other story in the treasury that features Almanzo Wilder. Laura is now all grown up, and is engaged to Almanzo Wilder, who is away in New York working. Mary is away at the school for the blind, so it's just Ma, Pa, Laura, Carrie, and baby Grace. Laura is upset because Christmas doesn't feel the same without the ones she loves by her side, but when a surprise visitor arrives at the door, the Christmas spirit bites Laura in the side, and puts a smile upon her face. 5/5 stars.

I haven't read a book from the LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE series for years, but being a huge fan of Christmas, and writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder, I knew that I had to have A LITTLE HOUSE CHRISTMAS TREASURY. I was not disappointed. While I enjoyed the stories CHRISTMAS IN THE BIG WOODS and CHRISTMAS ON THE PRAIRIE the most, each story brings such a large dose of Christmas spirit along with it, that they will all be cherished by readers. If you are going to purchase one holiday treasury this year, make it be this one. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro into the world of Little House.......2007-10-11

The My First Little House series of picture books illustrated by Renee Graaf are fabulous. The stories are enchantingly adapted from the Laura Ingalls classics and are the perfect introduction for young readers ages 3-8. The soft illustrations in the style of Garth Williams are magical and stand on their own, but paired with the carefully chosen snippets of Ingalls own storytelling, they will capture any reader's imagination and foster a love of all things Little House.

    Book Description

Combining fiction and nonfiction, this dramatic story set in the snowy backwoods follows the Robertson family as they prepare for Christmas in 1841. They are excitedly expecting visitors from afar. But as a winter storm begins to rage, the family fears for the safety of the travelers. How will Andrew and Sophie - with a baby on the way - fare on such a dangerous journey? Each chapter of the story is enhanced by information about the pioneer period and how Christmas was celebrated in the past. Children will learn about holiday traditions in more detail through crafts, games, songs and other activities. Even 150 years ago, Christmas was a special time. A companion book to A Pioneer Thanksgiving, A Pioneer Christmas weaves together stories, information and activities to create a tapestry of pioneer life.
