unique tissue paper craft book.......2000-11-24
What is a rose window? It is a stained glass window on a grand scale, as used in Cathedrals. The author gives easy to understand directions for making tissue paper transparency decorations to hang in a window. The photos are lovely and show how beautiful tissue paper can look when light shines through it. The illustration on the cover is for what I consider to be the most difficult project in the book. There are many easier projects for the beginner to try first. Although the finished project looks complex, the projects are easy to make. Basically all that is needed is tissue paper, a handmade cardboard frame, scissors, pencil, and glue. Simple patterns are in the book and must be photocopied before use. These rose windows would make a lovely and unique gift, especially for adults. Twenty-five pages at the end are dedicated to instructions for large tissue paper scenes to hand in a window. The instructions for star money: a fairy tale scene and lantern-holding children are detailed, but once you understand the general instructions, you can make your own custom designs, such as celebrating holidays, festivals, or nature landscapes.

Archaeologist Cecily Petersen has loved Tate Winthrop since she was a teen, but the handsome Native American refuses to consider a mixed marriage. Instead, he becomes her white knight, protecting her from an abusive stepfather and arranging college grants and housing. But when Cecily discovers that the "grants" were actually outright gifts from Tate, she's furious. Her anger shifts their relationship from friends to lovers and forces them both to confront deeply held convictions and fears. When Cecily learns of a political scandal that could threaten Tate, she's determined to shield him, even though she knows it's likely that he'll never forgive her for the necessary deception. With political scandal in D.C., nefarious shenanigans on the reservation, and sizzling passion between the hero and heroine, Paper Rose delivers everything Palmer's readers have come to expect and more. --Lois Faye Dyer

Everything I have come to expect of Palmer..........2007-06-19
This was my first attempt at reading Palmer's novels. I must say--I was more than rewarded for my effort! This novel made me laugh, made me cry, and made my heart ache. The chemistry between Cecily and Tate is unbelievable and I loved how Tate kept trying so hard to keep his hands off of her. Very cute, indeed! Cecily's innocence and fiery character were endearing as well. Palmer is a master and I highly recommend this book if you've never read her before. Happy reading!!!
Good despite how typical it is for Palmer.......2007-06-16
Another typical Palmer book. It was a good read with great characters, emotions and storyline. I always seem to enjoy reading Palmer's books, and I love how she uses recurring characters to tie her books together. Tate was a secondary character in "Once In Paris". I liked all the characters in the book, including Colby Lane, and the romance between Tate and Cecily was good.
But though I liked the book, I found myself a bit frustrated with some things. The storyline and romance/characters were just very, very typical of Palmer. She reuses the same theme over and over. I don't really mind it all that much, because it's a theme that works, but it's still frustrating to read the same type of story. Her females tend to always been naive and innocent, and her males brooding and at times overly mean. "Paper Rose" wasn't much different. It just gets a little old after reading such a theme in so many of Palmer's books.
So yeah, I liked the book, but some variation on Palmer's theme wouldn't have been a bad thing.
A possible good gone bad.......2007-04-20
This book starts out very sweet, very promising....then you meet the characters in detail and it turns bad...
So story is about this young woman (Cecily) whos been in love with a man (Tate) for over 8 years. Tate believes hes a full blooded Lakota Indian and therefore would not marry Cecily for fear of tainting his bloodlines. However, he soon finds out that hes not truly full blooded and then decides to marry Cecily.
Selfish, selfish, selfish. Tate is so arrogant and is so worried about his culture that he completely blocks off Cecily's passionate feelings towards him. However, he is able to take her to bed without any guilt at the time. Selfish. He then goes on to marry her after he learns shes pregnant and hes not truly what he thinks he is. Selfish. Hes by far one of the worst male characters Diana Palmer has came up with.
Cecily is ok. She knows what she wants, she keeps faithful and is willing to let Tate live his life without her. Shes independent and very loving. Its too bad she was paired up with a bad character.
Overall, its a good book through about one third of it or one half, but then it stars to dwindle because of the selfishness Tate demonstrates. Not entirely recommend it, but if youre a Diana Palmer fan then youll probably enjoy it at least a little.
Difficult hero to relate to..........2006-08-16
Archeologist Cecily has loved Tate Winthrop since she was 17 and he rescued her from an abusive stepfather and secretly paid for her college "scholarship." He makes it perfectly clear that there will never be a relationship between them as he is full blooded Lakota and doesn't want to dilute his bloodline. So she pines away for him for the next eight years. When his "girlfriend" Audrey spills the beans about the identity of her benefactor, Cecily goes into a rage at a political fundraiser, and pours a bowl of crab bisque on him, much to the media's glee. She drops out of graduate school and moves into a new apartment to separate herself from his influence, and develops a deeper friendship with his former colleague, Colby Lane, much to Tate's annoyance.
In her new position as the curator of a Native American museum in Washington, Cecily is asked to aid a senator in foiling an illegal gambling operation on the reservation back home. If she doesn't help, it could create a scandal with Tate at the apex. She asks Colby to join her in the investigation, which puts Tate in a rage. He shows up at his mother's house with every intention of finally "taking" her. After some afternoon delight, he wants her to drop everything and move in with him, but she tells him goodbye instead. And Tate manages to leave her with a party favor.
With Colby having retrieved the name of the guys behind the blackmail, they arrive back in Washington, where her covert efforts are for naught, as the blackmailers release the trump card to destroy Senator Matt Holden's career; a secret that could drive a permanent wedge between her and Tate forever. Sensing that there are feelings between Tate and Cecily, Audrey schemes to keep them apart. Will they manage to find their way back to each other? Will Tate's racist attitude keep him from finding real love?
This was my first Palmer novel, and I found myself in the middle of an obvious series. While the storyline was interesting, Tate was a little too "caveman" in his convictions (the whole "bloodline dilution" wore thin after the third chapter); Colby was a more intriguing partner and it would have been interesting to see Tate get his comeuppance and spend the rest of his days with shrew Audrey.
Paper Roses~Great Book!.......2006-07-08
This book has everything love, heartache, jealousy, murder & redemption. This book is about Tate Winthrop proud Native American that won't consider a relationship with Cecily Blake because he won't have a mixed marriage. Cecily hides a secret that will devastate Tate. He saved her as a teenager from an abusive stepfather & has been secretly supporting her for years. When Cecily finds out she leaves school & goes out on her own to became independent of Tate. No nonsense spirituality.......2006-08-10
If you are one of the one out of a million
who is seeking God (not the bearded lightning
thrower---but the SOURCE and the TRUTH) then this is a good
book for you, especially if you want to beat
the odds and become the one out of a billion
that FINDS God. This book is not for the blissed
out seeker looking to buy water by the river and
does a good job of exposing all those that would
sell water by the river at high prices! Mister
Rose explains all the other problems posed by
existence in a herd-like society and details those
practices that didn't work for him and those that DID
work for him, as he became one of the one out of a billion
that became the TRUTH. He's not a guru, he's not from
Bombay or Tokyo, Mister Rose just tells IT like IT is, whether
YOU like it or not.
Very good book.......2004-08-11

The book describes the work and experience of David Gold, the author, when he was working with Mr. Richard Rose in West Virginia at Mr.Rose's Ashram.
Another great book by Mr. Rose is the Direct Mind Experience.
A book based on attacking beliefs.......2002-08-26
This book might be summed up rather simply rather than reading the numerous pages: truth is the search for yourself, and you won't find yourself while looking outside in the world. This is as simple as it can be put. Rose analyzes numerous paths for the reader to demonstrate how they all fail to meet some rather common sense criteria. His criteria are primarily: "elimination of concepts", self observation, self remembering, respectful doubt, development of intuition, and knowing the Real Observer. For those who don't have any particular beliefs, he doesn't go very far to tell you exactly what you should do. But if you take his logical analysis and common sense criteria to the point of negating everything, you may discover that everything in the world crumbles away like an illusion. And when the world crumbles away, you may discover something rather important. In particular, you may discover the pointlessness of the current existence you are in, find shattering depression, and then some illumination. Or, you may just jump to the marvel of existence. They are both sides of the same coin, after all. Buy it and read it, or begin looking carefully to see who you are.
West Virginia Zen Master.......2002-03-10
Richard Rose is an awakened teacher who has spent his life tirelessly pointing the way for others to awaken--and it has worked. Rose's plain-spoken, common sense approach to self-discovery laid the groundwork for several of his students--so far--to "make the whole trip," as Rose puts it. Rose, by his own admission is not a polished writer or speaker--"I'm a discoverer, not an orator," he has said on occasion--but "The Albigen Papers" is an excellent introduction to his teachings, and for the insightful student, it will provide a wealth of new and original ideas on the "ways and means" of Awakening.
Spirtual Seekers Guide Book.......2000-10-05
The first time that I read The Albigen Papers was like a breath of fresh air. Here is an actual system that can be used to lead one out of the darkness, and into a more aware existance. There are very few books that are available that have the truth of human existance so deeply etched into the words that one is reading. Wonderful

Customer Reviews:
Three Cheers to M.J. Zellnik.......2006-12-02
Question: A riveting mystery set in Portland Oregon in 1894? How good can it be?
Answer: It can and is an absolutely wonderful book. Libby Seale and Peter Eberle are two terrific characters with high powered charisma set against the backdrop of murder in Portland Oregon in 1894. Libby Seale is a herione for all time. Delightful wit, great historical descriptions, and a plot that will keep you guessing makes this book a "must buy".
I can't wait to read the next Libby Seale mystery.
Portland's Mary Daheim.......2006-11-29
Readers who've made Mary Daheim's two mystery series set in central Washington such hits may now move on to Portland for M.J. Zellnik's 'Libby Seale' mysteries. Zellnik's work is set in the past--the 1890s--with accuracy that shows a real love for the era. The details of paper-making in the 19th century and the impact of cheap labor from China add a rich background to the mystery: who died in Hiram Rose's place and who is threatening Mr. Rose's life.
Second Book Well worth the Wait!.......2006-09-27
I was instantly caught up in the lives of Libby Seale and her fellow investigator, Peter Eberle. I couldn't put the book down, and was surprised by a few of the plot twists. I also liked that Libby Seale is one smart cookie, perfectly capable of solving a mystery, getting her man, and keeping abreast of the latest fashions. Be sure to add this to your reading list!
Worth the Wait!.......2006-09-20
Once again M J Zellnik pens an exciting and smart mystery. The main murder plot kept me guessing, while the complicated relationship between Libby and Peter kept me thoroughly intrigued. Can't wait for the next installment!
Great historical page-turner!.......2006-09-19
I loved this book -- Libby is a smart, plucky heroine. Peter is a smart sexy leading man. They are thrust into challenging situations not only in terms of solving a crime, but also in their own personal lives. The sexual tension is high, the historical descriptions fascinating, the characters rich and full of complexity. I loved the first mystery, practically devoured this one, and am terribly impatient to read the third. Reading these two books really made me want to visit Portland, as well! The historical settings, the time period of a city changing, the heroine with her difficult past she is escaping from in NY -- all these things leave me wanting more. Thank God for a wonderful heroine to fall in love with. More Libby Seale mysteries, please!

This enchanting collection of brave letters charts a correspondence of more than 12 years between two 19th-century women. Maimie Pinzer was a former prostitute/nude model/actress who wanted to be a lady; Fanny Howe was a Bostonian lady with an understanding of tragedy. The match was unlikely from both sides, but Fanny offered moral support and a definition of what it was to be a "Gentle American," while Maimie contributed her honesty and a clearer view of "the human condition" that Fanny would otherwise not know. The letters intimately detail what life was like for a lower class working woman--and how one woman struggled to make something more of that life.
Book Description
In 1910, a remarkable correspondence began between a wealthy and distinguished Bostonian philanthropist, Fanny Quincy Howe, and Maimie Pinzer, a Jewish prostitute living in Philadelphia and just recovering from morphine addiction.
The Maimie Papers is Maimie's side of that correspondence, offerring an unprecedented and still unique account of the life of a woman of the streets and of her inspiring transformation.
After a childhood in a wealthy but troubled family, Maimie's struggle for survival began at age 13 following years of apparent incestuous abuse. Her descent led her through reformatories, jails, and hospitals. It also brought her into contact with a sometimes colorful, sometimes grim assortment of people living on the edge, whose miseries and hopes she depicts with a true writer's gift.
With the intervention of a devoted social worker and the support of Fanny Quincy Howe-and despite experiences of sexual harrasment-Maimie is able, during the course of her correspondence, to leave prostitution and learn secretarial skills. With these skills-and with her talent for management, her street wisdom, and her compassion-Maimie becomes a kind of self-invented social worker, eventually providing shelter and services to street women in Montreal. The final letters in 1922 find Maimie happily married, mother to two adopted children, intent upon publishing her writing-and as indefatigable as ever.
A new afterword by Ruth Rosen follows the elusive vilifying portraits of prostitutes emanating from Hollywood,
The Maimie Papers introduces an unforgettable woman with a powerful writer's voice, who captures the present with wit and candor, and recalls the past without sentiment.
Customer Reviews:
A social historian akin to Dickens.......2006-03-12
Maimie Pinzer should never have confined her writing talent to the realm of letters. With her insights, life experience, and ability to tell the truth with the same flair that fiction authors tell a good story, she could have been a social historian on a par with Charles Dickens.
"The Maimie Papers" provides us with invaluable insight into why so many young women chose prostitution over threadbare yet respectable lives. Too many contemporary books and treatises on the subject are religious in theme and little more than repentance speeches from former prostitutes. Maimie Pinzer rationalized her choices without once apologizing for them, and once in a position to do so, combatted the prostitution problem using compassion and common sense, not blind religious fervor.
The book consists of a collection of letters that Maimie wrote to Boston philanthropist Fanny Quincy Howe between 1910 and 1922. Reading each one chronologically, one sees her progress from a floundering victim desperate for 'respectability' to an assertive young woman who challenges the system and may not always win, but emerges stronger via the effort.
Inspiring.......2001-07-05
I liked this book a lot. Maimie's trials and tribulations never abated her spirit and as she hoped against hope and did what she believed right for herself and those near her, she developed into a sharp business woman. If not for the misfortunes of the war she might have become successful and rich, her keen business sense is remarkable in a woman of that period and class. Her faith never lost, she seems to have succeeded (not many records found after the letters end to give us the full picture) in creating for herself a happy and normal life. We should all have such an unquenchable spirit to try and try again and never give up!
