5 out of 5 stars LexiComp Drug reference.......2007-07-30

Works real well in my clinical practice. Small enough to take with me yet can be faster than computer based gui references.

5 out of 5 stars "Must have" for students.......2007-05-12

This is a reference I couldn't have made it through pharmacy school without. The updated version makes it easier to find the drug you are looking for. The tables and supplements in the back are great quick checks and wonderful reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and quick to use...........2007-03-27

I love this book...this is about the 4th edition I've bought. I find it very handy to use because you just look up the generic or brand name of the drug alphbetically, I dislike indexes. Also, the appendixes are great and quite helpful.

5 out of 5 stars My "bible".......2007-01-13

The pharmacists with whom I work refer to Lexi Comp's Drug Information Handbook as "our bible." We use it daily and it answers our concerns and questions. It's current and concise. I have a copy at home also, for use when I am on call and need a quick reference. I have recommended it to physicians and received positive feed-back from them. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Single best reference I have.......2006-08-26

Being a hospital pharmacist and former pharmacy resident at a very well-known tertiary care center, I have found the DI Handbook to be the single best resource I have. There are other reference books that provide more complete information or are tailored to a specific topic, but I don't think there is a better general drug reference book that is as easy to carry as the DI Handbook. I use it daily in my practice.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy reading for beginning Neonatal RNs.......2006-11-13

This book is very easy to read and very informational. It covers NICU info rom the delivery room to procedures and concepts such as RDS and PDAs. It also has information on managing Central lines and Vents. I highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for NICU rotations.......2006-09-29

Definitely this book was the most useful for on-call turns at NICU when I was a pediatrics resident. Years have passed and this manual remains as the best resource because of it's clearly written problem definitions and management strategies.

5 out of 5 stars best resource for residents.......2005-08-06

I am a first year resident on my first NICU rotation. I had bought the book on the advise of the senior residents and fellows. I really found the book to be concise and at the same time exhaustive. Definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU!.......2003-09-19

This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.

This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.

This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

5 out of 5 stars Always helpfull.......2002-10-25

All informations which are needed to work at an neonatal intensive care unit are in this book.
The chapters are clearly organized and the text is structured strictly to ensure that information can be quickly found.
Hopefully there will be anew edition soon.

    Book Description

Profiling twelve years of architectural education from 1972-1985, Education of an Architect celebrates the work of the talented students and the spirited faculty of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union. It is divided into two parts covering chronologically the first four years of the design studio, and the thesis year which is organized by topic: Instruments, Orders and Projections, the City, the Institution, Outskirts, the House, Bridges, Topographies and Texts.

This volume is a sequel to an earlier work of the same title, published in 1971 when the Cooper Union School of Architecture was invited by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, to exhibit student work produced between 1964 and 1971, the first such exhibition ever held at the Museum. That volume has since become a classic within architectural education, immensely influential upon architectural thought and practice in the last fifteen years.

This new collection presents work influenced by art, literature, and medicine, and consequently details the scope of expanded thought that now permeates Architecture.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but huge.......2000-03-15

This work's primary selling point is that it's very complete. And its biggest drawback is that . . . it's very complete. There's more material in this volume than you can ever put to use. You come away from a straight read feeling overwhelmed, and you come away from a skimming or a search by subject feeling like you missed something. Still, if you're looking for specific material on something relating to King Arthur, this is probably your best bet. If you're looking to be entertained by the Arthurian story, buy yourself a copy of The Once And Future King.

5 out of 5 stars Basic to all serious study on the topic.......1999-10-19

If you are serious about studying the Arthurian legends, you need this book. If you have no other reference work, this should be the one on your shelf. Lacy & Co. deserve heaps of praise on their heads for this volume! It covers aspects of the legends themselves in differing countries and in different eras. It covers art work. It covers music. It covers particular characters. It covers theories relating to the backgrounds to the legends, both historical and folklorical. The entries are readable, clear, and give lots of information so that you can follow up on any given topic. I cannot praise this book enough! Every library should have a copy (including many personal libraries...).

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any collection........1996-05-16

This is the new, updated edition of The New Arthurian Encyclopedia published in hardcover in 1991. As with the older version, it provides more than 500 new entries that cannot be found in the 1986 Arthurian Encyclopedia. The update also contains a 40-page section compiling the various addendums that have appeared in The Arthurian Yearbook since 1991. It is disappointing to note, however, that these new items were not incorporated into the main work.

Arranged alphabetically, the Encyclopedia remains the most invaluable reference resource for the Arthurian Legend. Each entry is written and signed by a scholar of Arthurian studies, and is followed, where necessary, by a short bibliography. The index is much easier to use than the one in the original volume. A must have for any collection.

    Book Description

You'll appreciate this book for its great projects and its great reading. A founding member of the Lacy Knitters guild, Mary Schiffmann was a tireless collector of lace patterns and a delightful storyteller about her life and craft. Nancy Nehring has lovingly collected Mary's legacy, patterns ranging from simple edgings to an elaborate christening gown, and accounts of her life starting with her birth to missionaries in Japan and following her long life of lacy knitting in America.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful lacy knitting.......2007-08-24

While this book was not exactly what I was expecting (Ohrenberg shawls, etc.), it was indeed highly useful. Mary Schiffman provides many different types of lace for knitted lace, including edging or borders, samplers, shawls, and a skirt. Her style is relatively straight-forward yet not for the faint of knitting heart. There is much to be learned in this book and it has many useful yet beautiful applications. I would recommend this book for the more advance knitter who is looking to explore the possibilities of knitted lace and design garments using lace techniques.

2 out of 5 stars Very few projects .......2005-08-07

The cover is deceptive in that it shows several lace doilies, but what you see on the cover is what you get in the book. Most of the stitch patterns are found in most pattern books. The only part of the book that is truly unique for the experienced lace knitter is the few lace edging patterns. Not worth 17.95 for those few patterns.

5 out of 5 stars The Lacy Knitting of Mary Schiffmann.......2005-04-06

This book is very well put together. I have been knitting for 20 years and love the patterns in this book. There are a number of advanced patterns for more experienced knitters, something difficult to find these days, and a number of simpler patterns for novice knitters. I only wish it had more patterns and hope that they will come out with a second book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy This Lace Knitting Book First.......2000-01-22

I highly recommend this book as either a first lace knitting book or to add to a collection because it is both helpful and beautiful. I have purchased other lace knitting books but because of their complexity I had never used them to produce a piece of lace. The author of this book, Mary Shiffmann, taught lace knitting and includes in the book a list of projects designed to help novice lace knitters develop their skills. I was able to pick up this book and without other help teach myself to knit lace. Also helpful is that all the patterns are charted. The book is an interesting mix of the author's personal history, discussions about lace, and lessons. It also contains an excellent variety of patterns (from easy to complex), projects and suggestions. I plan on working my way through many of the patterns.

The book has an artful approach that shows the beauty of hand knitted lace.

    Book Description

With a strong emphasis on media convergence throughout, this book helps readers develop a system-wide view of the interacting social, historical, economic, and technological forces at work in today's rapidly evolving mass media. Written by two highly regarded scholars and teachers, this book goes beyond other textbooks to help readers understand where, how, and why they fit into the contemporary media environment. Too often, mass communication texts rely only on popular publications or on academic research. In this interactive text, they have combined the concrete practice of journalism with empirical research, enabling students to comprehend the impact of the dynamic media that are an integral part of our lives today. Folkerts and Lacy guide readers through today's whirlwind of mass communication by providing them with the information and critical thinking skills necessary to consider objectively the media and its roles in their lives. For anyone interested in gaining knowledge of the media.

      Book Description

Steve Lacy: Conversations is a collection of thirty-four interviews with the innovative saxophonist and jazz composer. Lacy (1934–2004), a pioneer in making the soprano saxophone a contemporary jazz instrument, was a prolific performer and composer, with hundreds of recordings to his name.

This volume brings together interviews that appeared in a variety of magazines between 1959 and 2004. Conducted by writers, critics, musicians, visual artists, a philosopher, and an architect, the interviews indicate the evolution of Lacy’s extraordinary career and thought. Lacy began playing the soprano saxophone at sixteen, and was soon performing with Dixieland musicians much older than he. By nineteen he was playing with the pianist Cecil Taylor, who ignited his interest in the avant-garde. He eventually became the foremost proponent of Thelonious Monk’s music. Lacy played with a broad range of musicians, including Monk and Gil Evans, and led his own bands. A voracious reader and the recipient of a MacArthur “genius” grant, Lacy was particularly known for setting to music literary texts—such as the Tao Te Ching, and the work of poets including Samuel Beckett, Robert Creeley, and Taslima Nasrin—as well as for collaborating with painters and dancers in multimedia projects.

Lacy lived in Paris from 1970 until 2002, and his music and ideas reflect a decades-long cross-pollination of cultures. Half of the interviews in this collection originally appeared in French sources and were translated specifically for this book. Jason Weiss provides a general introduction, as well as short introductions to each of the interviews and to the selection of Lacy’s own brief writings that appears at the end of the book. The volume also includes three song scores, a selected discography of Lacy’s recordings, and many photos from the personal collection of his wife and longtime collaborator, Irene Aebi.

5 out of 5 stars A Petite Fleur for Steve Lacy.......2006-08-28

It's hard to get excited about a book that consists entirely of interviews conducted over years by a wide variety of scribes, and yet STEVE LACY CONVERSATIONS emerges as a triumph for editor Jason Weiss. It's nearly as good as Kenneth Goldsmith's edition of inter views with Warhol that came out a few seasons ago (I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR). Like Warhol, Lacy was sometimes interiewed by hacks who sometimes muddled or confused his message, and a few times here you have to imagine what Lacy really might have replied before the tape or whatever got transcribed incorrectly. That makes for some fun though, and it forces the reader into working out the sense, allowing the reader to become involved in the process as well.

Weiss tells us that he became interested in Lacy's music primarily through his, and Irene Aebi's, connections to Brion Gysin, whose READER Weiss edited a while back. For nearly two decades Lacy and Gysin were co-conspirators, a "songwriting team," Weiss suggests, like Rodgers and Hammerstein or Greenwich and Barry. Lacy had an equally long, well longer, intimacy with the work of his mentor, jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, and then, from 1960 to his own death, he was frequently a pilgrim to the shrine of Thelonius Monk, whose work he revered beyond all others.

His wife, Irene Aebi, had many connections in the beat world, and their last LP together, BEAT SUITE, is a song cycle using texts from many canonical Beat poets (and such allied figures as Jack Spicer) whom Aebi knew from her youth. French Canadian musicians interviewed Lacy in 1976 in Montreal and New York; their interview is one of the best here, with some probing, intelligent questions designed to elicit thoughtful replies. This is es[pecially good on Lacy's Russian heritage (he was born Steven Lackritz in New York in 1934). Rare and unusual photographs decorate and illuminate the work here, including one of Lacy blowing it out in his beautiful ivy-laden Paris garden in the late 1990s--the paradise he left a little bit later to take that last job in Brookline, Massachusetts. His hairline travels between photos but he's always the same appealing, deeply American man of the world.

"When I used to work with Monk," he recalled, "he used to say, 'Let's lift the bandstand.' That's magic, man, when the bandstand levitates. I didn't know how to do it--but I knew what he was talking about. Old dreams but they're still valid." (From a 1979 interview with Brian Case.) Well, we know that somehow in the process, Lacy did discover how to "lift the bandstand," and somehow I suspect he knew how all along, even before the revelations of Taylor, Gysin, Aebi or Monk.

      Book Description

With this newest volume in the Foxfire series comes a wealth of the kind of folk wisdom and values of simple living that have made these volumes beloved bestsellers for the last three decades, with more than two million copies in print.

In 1966, in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Georgia, Eliot Wigginton and his students founded a quarterly magazine that they named Foxfire, after a phosphorescent lichen. In 1972, several articles from the magazine were published in book form, and the acclaimed Foxfire series was born. Almost thirty years later, in this age of technology and cyber-living, the books teach a philosophy of simplicity in living that is truly enduring in its appeal. This new volume-- Foxfire 11--celebrates the rituals and recipes of the Appalachian homeplace, including a one-hundred page section on herbal remedies, and segments about planting and growing a garden, preserving and pickling, smoking and salting, honey making, beekeeping, and fishing, as well as hundreds of the kind of spritied firsthand narrative accounts from Appalachian community members that exemplify the Foxfire style. Much more than "how-to" books, the Foxfire series is a publishing phenomenon and a way of life, teaching creative self-sufficiency, the art of natural remedies, home crafts, and other country folkways, fascinating to everyone interested in rediscovering the virtues of simple life.

Enough with the editing and correcting the language usage of these wonderful people...why take away from their culture and natural use of language...why should I read about mountain people when their speech patterns are corrected?...I might as well read any old book about growing apples anywhere...give me back the language of Foxfire 1.

It would be good for the theology student to play with, but I didn't really care for it too much.
