I love this series immensely. The characters are believable and fun. Kim Harrison knows how to write a story. I've love all of her previous books and this one is no different. The plot is intense. It's the kind of book you can't put down. I love how Rachel is portrayed. I look foward to the next ones!

Ms Harrison is getting better with each installation. Can't wait for her next book!. The addition of a "few more demons" was brilliant and diversified the storyline nicely.

This entire series rocks!!! Pick them up and you can't put them down. The cast of characters are memorable and believable. I had given up on urban fantasy, Laurel K Hamilton will do that to you. (that's called fair warning folks)
However Kim Harrison saved the day. I have all the Rachel Morgan books and have my calender marked as to when I can get the next one coming out. The plots MOVE.. and in unexpected ways at times. While relationships are there, Ms. Harrison doesn't let it become the whole story (thank the goddess for that!)
This books are a must read for all urban fantasy fans!!

I think this book is the best in the series so far. It seems like Kim Harrison books just get better and better. I love this series and I'm waiting feverishly for the next one. If the rest of the books in her series are any indication, then the next book will be even better than this one. I really liked this book because of the brilliant mix of humor, horror, fantasy, and characters that are so well described I feel like I know them. I've never read an author who could shock me, scare me, then make me laugh out loud so many times in the same book. Trust me, this one is worth several all-nighters.

The examples are cheesy and the author assumes the reader knows more than what the user has to know in a college course at this level. But if you're already knowedgable of this stuff, this can make, probably a descent reference book.

I had to purchase this book for a graduate school course. There is a lot of good information here. Unfortunately lengthy examples and tangents muddy it up pretty badly. Also, I think the author(s) could have safely assumed that readers are familiar with programming; maybe that perspective could have grounded and guided the chapter flow a little better.
Looking at any 1 section, the writing is good and the explanations are clear for the most part. The catch is that the book as a whole is a collection of enormous disorganized chapters; chapter 2 is almost 100 pages. This work is dire need of editing and some understanding of its intended audience.

This book is one of the better books that I have used for my courses. Even though the subject taught at hand is not trivial this book makes it a lot simpler. Trust me this book is a lot better than some other books I have seen. 500% better than Digital Design by Mano.

I bought this book as a part of my classroom text material. It's an interesting book that talks about how Toyota uses its system to achieve lean manufacturing by integrating people, process and technology. This is coupled with the lean design guide book for our text. It is informative.

This book is based on lean product development in the automotive world and has some shortcomings when it comes to applying what Toyota does to other industries. However, with Toyota's success lately their are few arguments against not studying how Toyota approaches product development and applying it to our specific industries. I think the hardest thing for most American companies will be having the long-term discipline to implement what Toyota has done.

Although this book is very popular today, the authors offer no new approaches to new product development. Companies should strive to leapfrog Toyota. This is the third book I've read about Toyota and by far the best one. I'm an engineering manager and found dozens of simple, new ideas in this book. This is a very thorough & practical guide to the inside workings of Toyota's PD system. There are many examples and sufficient details that you can easily understand them and also try to implement them in your own organization.

The book is everything I expected, except for the tape on front of the cover. I tried to remove the tape and lo and behold, the printing under the tape says "FREE COPY". I don't think it's right to get a free copy of a book from the publisher then sell it. So although I'm pleased with the book, I'm disappointed in the deception.

This is a great book and needs to be in your library if you are, or are considering a career in the mortgage industry. But, Mr. Morgan needs to do a better job of describing what is in the tables used as examples. It becomes confusing when looking at a box with numbers in it and little or no quantification of the rows or columns. If this book is truly a "guide to residential finance" then more examples are needed and perhaps some excises with answers, kind of like a text book. Even though this book has been around for several years, a few modifications could make it a well rounded text and an industry standard.

If you're new to the mortgage business, then I highly recommend buying this book. It's very detailed and contains all of the practical info that you need to get a start in the mortgage industry.
Other than that, at times it becomes confusing due to a few editing errors.

I agree with many of the previous posters as to the value of the information contained in this book....it is excellent. That being said, the book is evidently updated annually and the author does a VERY poor job of editing from one edition to the next. I believe this to be part of the reason a previous poster found the text to be confusing at times. In addition to typographical errors, there are errors in the page locations of certain topics, and errors with some tables as well.
That being said, I still highly recommend this book. It is not one to be read only, but to be worked through with paper, pencil, and calculator.

This is a good book. It is crammed with lots of information that is specific to the loan industry. It is a comprehensive guide covering most of the aspects of the loan industry. I turn to this guide every now and then to check up on problems and questions that I run into with my loans.
Only problem is that it could be written more clearly. It's difficult to decipher some of the figures and tables because the author doesn't explain them enough beforehand. Also he uses some jargon and other terms that might not be familiar to a new loan officer.
Overall, a good guide with lots of specific, useful information. Drawback is some parts and concepts are not clearly explained. I would still recommend to buy it though as its faults are not overwhelming.

Writing with a keen appreciation for genuine science, Coulter reveals that the so-called gaps in the theory of evolution are all there is—Darwinism is nothing but a gap. I wonder why some people in this country who claim to be such good Christians have no problem with our government slaughtering thousands of families? If the church of liberalism is godless, then what would you call a government who has done just that? Invaded another country for its own personal gain? I just can't help but wonder what makes Ann Coulter tick, that her vision is so clearly focused in one direction while totally ignoring the sins of her own. I am reminded of the Bible passage that talks about removing the log from one's own eye before attempting to remove the speck from a brothers. These kind of books will do nothing more than to continue to polorize this country, other than making her more money from idiots who cheer her on.

Read this and other far right books. Read far left liberalism books. You should realize that both the far right and the far left are necessary evils. As long as the left and right agree not to agree we as a nation will prosper. Much like our government. When both parties agree you best worry! Imagine our nation without the right. Many would join on the dark side. Imagine our nation without the left. We would be how should I say, Talibaned or held to the strict standards of Sharia law, in the Christian sense. Careful how far we lean. We might just fall and not get back up.

This book is so dead on and rock solid. Everything in this book, footnotes the source, and is packed with information on the whole liberal thought process. The book is also full of analogies like 'liberals freak out if a tree is cut down, but could care less about aborting babies'. This book along with Bill O'Reilly's Culture Warrior, are awesome at exposing a lot of this left wing agenda. Ann Coulter, is/was an attorney and knows her stuff. Of course all the liberals are going to rate this a '1' so no one reads it, but you will not be disappointed in this book.
Angry, intolerant, irrational.......2007-09-30
Miss Coulter is angry and starved for attention. This book is a manifestation of her mean-spirited partisanship, the type that still clings to the failed neocon policies of G. W. Bush. As has been pointed out in previous reviews, her "endnotes" are inaccurate, her allegations are often baseless, and her so-called "facts" are oftentimes nothing more than right-wing talking points.
It's hard to imagine why she is so angry and distraught over America's current condition. After all, her sacred Republican Party has held the White House for all but 12 years since 1968. And since 1994, the congress has been in the hands of the religious right. And yet, here's Coulter, trying to blame all of our nation's social ills on whoever she deems as "liberal." What have the Republicans been doing over that vast span of time, if not addressing the very real social problems we face? What other priorities have taken precedence? Where have they budgeted the trillions in taxpayer dollars that could have gone into improving our schools, rebuilding the infrastructure, and keeping our economy strong and vibrant? Who has driven our country deeply into debt, especially to the Chinese Communists?
Why doesn't Ms Coulter address any of these salient points instead of trying to further divide a population that's growing sick of partisan bickering and no-compromise "leadership."
It would seem to me that any rational individual could see through her smokescreen of indignation and her strawman arguments.
Ann, here's fifty dollars. Please buy a clue.
Conservative, thought provoking spewings on the usual subjects.......2007-09-24
Interestingly, this book reads most like a similarly toned antithesis of Richard Hitchens' god is Not Great: How Religion Spoils Everything. Coulter has done what Hitchens did in the way of in your face inflammatory "journalism," although with an obviously pro-religious slant and bonus topics: abortion, crime and (lack of) punishment, the environment, public school teachers, 9/11, and even the war in Iraq. Although her book is well researched, it is a clinic on a skilled writer's ability to spin information in such a way to support their cause, opinion or point of view, especially as relates to evolution versus intelligent design. Noteworthy:
"...even Chernobyl wasn't as bad as people thought." (p 6) [I beg to differ. Read Voices of Chernobyl by Svetlana Alexievich]
"Anyone found guilty of homosexuality under Sharia law has a wall dropped on him. End of story." (p 28)
Refers to Dukakis as, the "Greek midget" (p 64)
Of today's Democrats, "It's as if all the brain-damaged people of America got together and formed a voting bloc." (p 84)
"The most important value to liberals is destroying human life." (p 97)
About the Jersey Girls (four 9/11 widows) or as she dubs them, the "weeping widows," she writes, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." (p 103)
"The only sort of authority Cindy Sheehan has is the uncanny ability to demonstrate, by example, what body types should avoid wearing shorts in public." (p 128)
"In real life, these taxpayer-supported parasites [public school teachers] are inculcating students in the precepts of the Socialist Party of America--as understood by retarded people." (p 148)
"Priests: 820 abused children per year; educators: 32,000 abused children per year." (p 168) [for those of you who went to public schools, there are a heck of a lot more public school teachers than priests]
Coulter's time spent arguing the pros of the death penalty as a punishment might more Christianly be spent encouraging prospective death penalty candidates to accept a certain someone as their personal savior, confess, repent, or whatever they need to do to get access to the non-hot section of the afterlife. She writes as if societal issues are black and white and the beliefs of Republicans are mutually exclusive of those of Democrats and vice versa. This has not been my experience. Although hatemongering is not my genre, I found that she made some excellent points during certain moments of lucidity. In fact, I found myself agreeing wholeheartedly with a significant portion of several chapters, while disagreeing ardently with the rest. Her attempt to convince atheists (read "liberals") that evolution is a crock and intelligent design is the way to go will probably be about as effective as Richard Hitchens' and (author of The God Delusion) Richard Dawkins' (who, by the way, she calls a "congenital retard" (p 295)) attempts to do the opposite.

The best all-around book for residents and practitioners........2007-06-05
I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.
Clinical Anesthesiology.......2006-03-19
It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearly in not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Also for the doctor that needs to update his knowledge.
My personal experience and the reason for buying the book was that I after 5 years i neuroanesthesia needed an update prior to a period as an anesthesiologist in a not specialised department. In this way the book served its purpose well.

This would be an optimal choice for most medical students with a special interest in anasthesia as well as for anaesthesia residents. It's extremely well-written, neither too detailed nor too simple. The authors write with authority, which is a good thing.
If I had to say something negative about this book, it would be the lack of colourful illustrations (this refers to edition elder to the 2005 edition). But then again, one knows what to expect when buying a Lange medical book. Still, this is a minor drawback, and means nothing in my eyes. I highly recommend this book!

I just updated my older, well read copy recently. This is still my favorite anesthesia resource, the book I grab when I want to refresh my memory about this or that.
No, it's not as in depth as many, but it IS easy to read, and the major points are well covered.
Whether novice or experienced practitioner, this book has much to offer.

I just started reading Kim Harrison so I've been reading her out of chronological order. Talk about lots of fun! She makes it easy to be a supernatural fan. lots of adventure and sex spice up her book...I wish she could write faster.

More demonic dirty deeds are to be seen here. Rachel encounters one of her demon's past slaves, and it turns out she is an elf. Suddenly there are elves everywhere, ex demon-slaves are elves, the super villain and annoying henchmen are elves. These guys are supposed to be gone, what is the story, etc.
Mysterious elderly next door neighbour, as well.
With arguments with her boyfriend, and the amusing pixie going on, this perhaps runs the risk of turning into a crazed supernatural fest, with no human characters left, despite their overwhelming majority numbers in the city.

I'm new to this series, but have been tearing through them! I'll always be a fan of Anita Blake, but this world has even more types of characters and the plot hasn't deviated into the relationship-only type yet. I'm already halfway through the next one!

OK, so since reading the first of the Rachel Morgan series, I have grown to love getting the next in the chain. Every time I dive into the pages and submerge into the world that Kim Harrison so eloquently portrays, I feel a part of the story. Her extraordinary gift is making such fantasy feel whole, real and totally believable.
This to me was the failing of others like buffy, which always felt unreal. Rachel is sassy, and knows what real life is, and to me they should put these into film ASAP!
Book 3 Rachel starts to think she can start getting her life in order, but as always things never quite go to plan. Living with a family of Pixies, a living vampire and having your boyfriend as a familiar would suggest 'normality' is a dream that will never come true, but lets hope Rachel can do it.
If you are looking to drop out of the hum-drum and into a complex and real fantasy world, with adult emotions shown with grit and feeling, these are the books for you, and book 3 is even better!
The Life of a Demon Familiar.......2007-07-17
Every Which Way But Dead (2005) is the third Urban Fantasy in the Rachel Morgan series, following The Good, the Bad, and the Undead. In the previous volume, Rachel slams Piscary into unconsciousness and turns him over to the FIBs. Later she convinces the Howlers to pay her fee for searching for their mascot fish.
In this novel, Piscary is convicted for the murders of several ley line witches after the demon Algaliarept testifies against him. Now Rachel summons the demon to fulfill her promise in exchange for his testimony. She goes through the rites to become his familiar.
After accepting her service, Al no longer needs his former familiar, the elf Ceri. Despite his sadistic intentions, Rachel convinces Al to release Ceri and then she gets Ceri onto sanctified ground. Ceri is now free after a thousand years of service to the demon.
Although Ceri is rapidly adjusting to her new freedom, Rachel needs to find her another home. Jenks is frustrated because he can't tell what kind of creature she is. He knows that she is the same kind as Trent Kalamack, but Rachel prefers not to release that information and pixies are not known for keeping secrets. Besides, Rachel, Ivy and Jenks are not exactly a normal household living in a typical lifestyle.
Rachel invites Keasley, the old witch living across the street, to come over and meet Ceri. While Keasley is not exactly a typical inderlander himself, he is more so than the Vampiric Charms team. At first Ceri and Keasley are a bit reluctant, but soon find much to like in each other. Keasley returns home to install Ceri in his spare bedroom.
In this story, Rachel notices that an older Were has been following her and confronts him in a back corner of the zoo. David Hue is an insurance adjuster who has a few questions about the fish that Rachel had taken from Mr. Ray's office. It seems that the fish had been stolen and the original owner has filed a claim. He also has some papers for Rachel to sign concerning the final disposition of the fish.
Algaliarept cannot use Rachel as his familiar without taking her back to the ever-after and is less than happy about her refusal to cross over. One day, when Rachel uses the ley line in her back yard, Al unexpectedly appears and starts dragging her away. Since the backyard ley line is surrounded by sanctified ground, the nearest available ley line is eight blocks away and Al is determined to drag or carry her to it. But Ceri, Keasley and David form a circle to stop him and Rachel, as the de facto summoner, then banishes him back to the ever-after.
This story also tells of Rachel's troubled relationship with Nick Sparagmos. After he became her familiar, Nick was subject to seizures and other upsets whenever Rachel drew upon a ley line. Now that she is Algaliarept's familiar, that tie has been broken, but Nick still isn't returning home. Then Kristen takes her out on a date and she finds herself becoming more attracted toward him.
With Piscary in prison, the criminal underground in Cincinnati becomes more unstable. Rachel gradually becomes aware of a new player. She first learns of Stanley Saladan from Takata in regard to his annual concert. Then Kristen takes her to Lee Saladan's gambling boat. Later, Quen hires her to protect Trent during a meeting with Saladan.
As usual, Rachel gets into all kinds of trouble with both her friends and her enemies. Sometimes it is hard to tell one from another, since today's friend is tomorrow's enemy and vice-versa. Her life is so screwed up!
Highly recommended for Harrison fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of inderlanders, humans and romance.

Justin Johnson was raised in Georgia where boys are taught how to use a gun from an early age. Justin enlisted after 9/11. "Mom, things aren't good. It's scary. You wouldn't believe this place. It's messing with our heads. Mom, you just never know. There are kids, ten- to-twelve year-olds and they got machine guns. You don't know: are they friendly or are they the enemy."
Casey Sheehan was raised in California. Casey's mother discouraged her son from enlisting in the army. He was loyal and loved his country. She offered to take him to Canada so that he could avoid Iraq, but he declined.
Casey and Justin met at Fort Hood, Texas. The two became quick friends although they didn't have a lot in common. "Both were quiet, strong, patriotic, and God-loving young men." "Both young men prayed to God and hoped they would make it home to their moms and dads, sisters and brothers."
Justin and Casey were both killed by radical Muslims.
Joe Johnson wanted revenge on the terrorists. He signed up with a unit shipping to Iraq and "swore to God and to Justin that I would go to Iraq and kill as many of them as I could." Joe was filled with hatred. "I could kill all the insurgents and it would never bring Justin back, I don't think I'll really get anything out of it except for maybe that one moment of satisfaction when I finally kill somebody. But as far as long-lasting feelings of satisfaction, I don't think I'll find it in Iraq. There's hardly a day goes by that I don't wish I hadn't a spent more time with him."
Cindy Sheehan was also filled with hatred but she took it a different direction. "She blamed President George W. Bush for Casey's death and called the Muslim radicals who killed Casey and Just "freedom fighters." "Cindy posted herself outside the president's Crawford ranch. She became a media phenomenon, thanks to a campaign by well-paid media experts from the Left." Her grief and the media destroyed her family.

Catherine Moy & Melanie Morgan expressively share the tragic story of two young men killed in Iraq, two families torn apart. Moy and Morgan capture and convey the pain and anguish the families are suffering. I found myself in tears as I read this book. The bravery of Justin and Casey is celebrated on these pages. I want to be careful not to state an opinion of the actions of the families for I would not add to their pain. After reading this book, the deaths become more than a news story. This book gives Justin and Casey a face and brings them into you heart. This book describes the divide in American opinion concerning the War on Terror. Regardless of which side of the divide you stand we must never forget the young men and women who are fighting this war. Ms Moy and Morgan are to be commended on their presentation of the heroic lives of these two young men. I highly recommend "America Mourning" to all.
Unfair to both sides.......2007-03-02
This book is one of the saddest pieces of "journalism" I have ever read. It is a smear job on both families. Not just Sheehan, but the ridiculous amount of personal stuff thrown out there on the Jackson's makes the reader wonder: What does any of this have to do with argument? All in all, a book that appears to be profiting from the death of two brave men. I am thoroughly appalled by the words and tactics of the authors. I am apolitical, so maybe I didn't enter this book with the frame of mind necessary to feel good about the dragging through the mud of two brave and decent soldiers families. Is this what they fought and died for? Flat ridiculous.

I mostly read just Stephen King books, but this book was one that I had heard about and decided to purchase. I was very glad to read about one family that cared so much for their son that his father enlisted to avenge his son's death. Unfortunatly, reading about Cindy Sheehan only wanted me to get a gun and shoot her. She did nothing but lie and kept her family from mourning their son's death. I really enjoyed this book.

If the authores would of just stuck with the story it would of been a 5 star for me. It had too many political judgements but all in all it was a good story. I heard they are thinking of making a movie out of this book. That I would like to see but I hope they focus more on the Soldiers and not so much on the politics.

This is a great story told well. Chernow is an amazing researcher and a very good writer. I agree with some of the reviewers that the earlier parts of the book are better, but his description of the transformation of the capital markets in the late 20th century and the House of Morgan's role in this transformation is interesting and relevant. This book increased my understanding of the banking and investment banking worlds. My only quarrel is that, at times, I thought Chernow editorialized too much detracting from the story. Like many financial journalists, I got the sense that he is not a big fan of capitalism. Perhaps that's unfair, but if he simply told the story without some of his asides, the book would have been even better.
A book about the history of a family.......2006-12-14
This is an interesting book about the history of the Morgan family. It tends to drag on and is not as good as Chernow's other books about finance (notably Hamilton). I was expecting quite a bit more on JP Morgan and the book did not deliver in that way. Despite those two flaws the book is filled with such good information and is so well organized that it still deserves five stars I would just know you are not buying a book solely or even focusing on JP Morgan.
America's Gilded Age.......2006-11-10
Ron Chernow is good at writing in great detail while making his books interesting. "House of Morgan" is well documented as are all of Chernow's books. This book is the interesting story of big banking in the United States and abroad during the period of 1850-1900. Chernow goes beyond the earlier years of the J. P. Morgan empire to the present; giving an introduction to Morgan/Chase as we know it today. The early founder, Pierpont, was ruthless, secretive and rich. The book is a long one, and took awhile to read, but it was worth the time.

A much more engaging and beautiful account on the life of the Morgan family and their banking legacy has been outdone by this work from Ron Chernow.
The book covers all aspects of the Morgan family and even discovers long forgotten family secrets. It dwells into the minds of these great capitalists and takes the reader deep into historic moments in American financial history. The overall grandeur and majesty of some of the most powerful men to have ever walked the earth, men who saved the U.S. from financial ruin, is evident in every page.
Read this one and you will love it!
In Depth, to the Nth degree.......2006-04-22
I read Chernow's awesome book on Rockefeller and expected the same from this treatment of America's first uber-bank. For some reason the narrative just seemed half as interesting as the Rockefeller book. This work primarily seemed to be lots of facts and figures and a historical timeline-- the interesting anecdotes and sidebars available in Rockefeller seemed to be somewhat lacking here-- either that or I've become jaded in what entertains me.
Overall it's certainly the definitive work on the subject to be sure, but I was hoping on a little more entertainment as the thing is a telephone book. And anyone can read a telephone book for a hundred pages-- 500 pages takes dedication.
