5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Made is wonderfully made.......2007-08-23

I read this book to my son, JW and to his brother - I've gotten each a book and personalized it with their name in appropriate places. I tear up almost every time that I read it because it is so very touching. I would recommend this book for anyone. It makes a wonderful baby gift.

5 out of 5 stars Straight to the Heart.......2007-07-03

This book is simple, but touching. I have given it to all of my friends. We all need a reminder of how much God loves us, and this really gets the point across in a short, sweet way. It is especially helpful when I am feeling ungrateful or down & makes me look at all that I have in my life. The best book I have ever read. Just awesome!

5 out of 5 stars God Thinks You're Wonderful.......2007-05-27

This is a wonderful book for kids. It's out of print, however, but I was able to find it through Amazon.com. It's simple, fun, and a quick read that clearly illustrates how special each child is to God. The author, Max Lucado, never disappoints. I bought a copy for each of my grandchildren for Easter and one for a First Communion Gift and they all loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-12

This book is so beautiful. Its just an incredible love story but written for a child! I used it for my youth group, to bring home the fact that we are all children of God and no we are not adults BUT CHILDREN!

5 out of 5 stars God Thinks You're Wonderful .......2007-04-11

This is something "wonderful" we can read ourselves, have our kids read and then read to our grandchildren. This will help build their self esteem and make them realize they really are special, not only to us but God, too.

If your a fan of the JTHM series or Jhonen Vasquez, this is another book to own. Based upon a child named "Squee" who lives next door to JTHM. Squee has a very traumatic childhood, but remains a loving yet constantly haunted little boy. Also "filled with meanwhiles", the book also expands on other various storylines seen throughout all of Vasquez' work.

what can i say it's Squee, if you read JTHM you'll like this book.

Oh, the wonderful things Mr. Brown can do! In this "Book of Wonderful Noises," Mr. Brown struts his stuff, as he imitates everything from popping corks to horse feet ("pop pop pop pop" and "klopp klopp klopp," respectively) while inviting everyone to join him in the fun. Young readers who are still learning their sounds and letters will get a wacky workout as they follow along with the very serious-looking, squinty-eyed Mr. Brown. Whether it's eggs frying in a pan or a hippo chewing gum, the skillful Mr. Brown just keeps topping himself, with a "sizzle sizzle" or a "grum grum grum." "Mr. Brown is so smart he can even do this: he can even make a noise like a goldfish kiss!... pip!" As usual, the words and pictures of Dr. Seuss make reading (and making all sorts of funny noises) impossible to resist. Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? will stay fresh through many a giggling reading. --Paul Hughes

Book Description

Hears an introduction for babies to the wonderful mishmash world of sounds. Listen to the cow's MOO, the frying eggs' SIZZLE, and the thunder's BOOM BOOM BOOM. There are plenty of noises for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Great story for young and old.......2007-09-27

This has been my daughter's favorite book since the beginning. Everyone in our house knows this story by heart, including her. She's only 21 months old and already needs a new book because it is falling apart. She drags it out all the time. It is really easy to get into the story and change voices and make it fun. My daughter can almost read it to me now!

4 out of 5 stars Fun book for infants.......2007-09-24

We read this book to my daughter before she was born. Could always get a "kick" out of the sounds. Now that she's 5 months old, she still loves this story. We can - fortunately or unfortunately - recite it in our sleep. Think it's a great "sound" book for the young ones. Plus, the pictures are very colorful and it is a board book - even better.

5 out of 5 stars The classics are always a good choice........2007-09-20

My husband and I collected several books in anticipation of our son's birth, and among them many Dr. Suess volumes. We were so excited to discover that our son loved this one! From the earliest age he latched onto it as a favorite and would bring it to us to read. The board version is slightly more condensed than the original which turns out to be handy for little attention spans. Get it...its worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite book!.......2007-08-09

This is my son's all-time favorite book. He loved it from a few months of age through about 3 years old. Would recommend to anyone with little kids! A really fun read!

5 out of 5 stars Great entertainment for young children.......2007-07-20

Young children will absolute love it when they're parents make various sounds of animals that Mr. Brown can make, and they will love to try to make the sounds themselves while having a great time. Perfect for young children.

Uncover the treasures in God's Hebrew names!

Groups 140 names into eight sections-Almighty, Father, Redeemer, Shepherd, Spirit, Truth, Defender, and Faithful.

Each artfully designed page includes-the English name, the Hebrew name, the English transliteration, inspiring devotional thoughts, and relevant Scripture passages from the Complete Jewish Bible (both "Old" and New Testaments).

In Hebrew thought, a name did more than identify a person; it revealed their very identity. It is the same with the names of God, only in the Scriptures, God's identity is expressed not in one name, but in many. Each name of God is like a curtained window. Draw back the curtain and the light will flood in, giving us glimpses of his infinite glory.

4 out of 5 stars Out of date advice, but 'bang on' observations.......2007-06-21

I remembered this series from its assitance in raising my "first litter" of kids, who are now in their mid and late twenties. I have just finished re-reading this title in honour of my four year old youngest.

I gave the book four stars rather than five because, as other reviewers have noted, the book is 30 years old and in some places it's obvious that it hasn't been updated since then. I was occasionally really surprised at the flashbacks I got in reading what was once the "gold standard" in child development advice and realizing how odd it soudns today. There are places, especially in the second half of the book, where observation gives way to opinion and advice that is a relic of its time. (TV is good, kids 'need' to be ghettoized in schools 'for their own developmental good', and a goodly dose of "girls behave this way and boys behave that way, and you can predict behavior based on body type [whaaa?!?!].)

But kids themselves don't change that much -- kids develop today much the same way they developed 30 years ago and 300 years ago. (Oh, their interests and our expectations have changed a lot, but kids and their development patterns haven't.)

So if you're a reader who can sort observation from the opinions based on those observations, I would still recommend this book as a really good primer on what to expect from your child's physical, emotional, and intellectual development over the course of the fourth year. She pegs the changes in the developing child very accurately -- even if her ideas about what that means are sometimes a little wierd.

4 out of 5 stars Helped me understand our daughter!.......2006-07-06

I was looking for a short, easy to read overview about 4 year olds. I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on 1-3, but when our daughter hit 4, all control and understanding was lost! Ames' book really put the age in perspective -- she does a great job describing what's normal for 4. As a result, my husband and I felt a bit less isolated, more secure, and confident as parents.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely helpful, definitely dated.......2006-04-01

My own four-year-old is now five. I read this book around the time he turned 4 so it's been a little while, but after reading the prior review I had to comment.

Swearing and violent stories ARE totally normal for this age -- at least for boys -- even when there are no "horrible experiences" or other negative influences that the child has been exposed to. My son has never been spanked, watches almost no TV or movies, and has limited exposure to "four letter words"; this is also true of almost all of my friends' similar-age children and my son's preschool classmates. But I found the book's description of the child's fascination with violence and exaggeration of his own capabilities to be spot on. And something of a relief, as other reviewers have mentioned, precisely because so many people have the judgmental attitude that any child who likes to talk about "killing bad men" must be in a violent home.

As for the chapter on temperament being determined by body type, I found it completely bizarre. I have to assume this is just another example (along with recommending "rubber pants" for bedwetters and so on) of how dated these books are; perhaps this theory had some currency then? My advice to anyone who reads this book now is to just skip that entire chapter. It makes no sense at all and seriously detracts from the rest of the book. If you want to read about temperament in connection with children's discipline and education, check out Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's books.

I wouldn't call this book a must-have but if you, like myself, are a voracious reader of parenting books, it's worth adding to your library at the appropriate time. Most other books for this age group focus on some particular aspect or issue -- nutrition, discipline, whatever -- and this is one of the few that give a good overall developmental picture. Just translate some of the dated ideas (substitute pull-up style overnight diapers for rubber pants) and skip the wacko body-type chapter, and it's a handy, quickly-read introduction to the next year of your child's life.

5 out of 5 stars An Oldie But Goodie!.......2006-03-22

I am a stay at home mom of three older children and a four year old boy and I loved this book. I had a lot of worries about my lovable and intelligent son and this book was just a sigh of relief. Almost everything I read in this book described my son perfectly. He has a lot of positive qualites, but also his share of negative qualities (all of which were covered in this book) and it was refreshing to read that he is normal and will grow out of most of these things by the time he is five.

Although this book was written in a European style, and many years ago in 1976, I still feel it is relevant to today. Kids change some, but not too much. Although I in no way advocate severe child rearing practices, I think today's child rearing recommendations are way too lax and touchy feely and haven't even worked for me. This book gave me good, positive ideas for caring for my son (that I may actually be able to do!) and also gave me the confidence to realize that most of what he does and says is normal.

5 out of 5 stars Very sensible and enlightening account of a 4 year old.......2006-03-16

I really enjoyed this book. It offered so many insights to my 4 year old's behavior and gave very sensible and practicle advice about how to deal with specific situations. The authors truly understand what it's like to parent a 4 year old!

If the world’s longest ear hair, a woman whose legs were broken by a flying pig, a college student who got credit for dressing like a lobster and living in a box for three months, and a man who patented a method for determining the sex of spinach plants all ended up in the same place, what would the result be? Why, another edition of the Bathroom Reader, of course! The series’ latest entry is another riotous collection of bizarre news, facts, and fun from all over the world.

5 out of 5 stars Great bathroom reader.......2007-08-13

This is a great bathroom reader with tons of weird, unfamiliar facts and information. You can read one page or more at a time and never have to review what you have already read to "catch up." A fun book with the best of Readers Digest, Ripley's Believe It or Not, and the Farmer's Almanac. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars BRI out of reading material?.......2007-05-18

As a long time fan of Uncle John and the BRI, I am sorry to say that I was disappointed by this one. The writing is not as good as the other books in the BRI library, nor is the information. I would unhesitatingly recommend the other volumes by Uncle John to anyone...but, sorry, not this one. it seems that BRI is running out of fodder.

5 out of 5 stars The Oddball Book.......2007-04-10

Everything from the world's most amazing coincidences to strange showbiz acts and even stranger solutions to problems are included in this hilarious volume.

    5 out of 5 stars A Match Made in Heaven...or...in Uncle John's Bathroom!.......2007-03-22

Here is a classic match of author and subject. For decades now Uncle John & Co. has been enlightening readers with wonderfully interesting facts, stories and what-have-you on numerous and sundry subjects, a few of which were definitely oddball in nature. If you've been hoping for a whole Uncle John volume devoted to just the odd, the offbeat and the bizarre, your prayers are answered. Here it is...and it's a hoot!

As just a sampling of what awaits the reader - within the book's 321 pages, they will learn of amazing coincidences, celebrity death conspiracies, odd baseball injuries, instances of amazing luck, the weird world of art, quack weight loss regimes, insect oddities, the African lake that burped and killed 2,000+ people, amazing tales of survival, the CIA's attempt to turn cats into mobile listening devices, what happened to at least seven men who tried to steal wire from live power lines(!), lost TV pilots, looney English lords, a museum devoted to body parts, examples of bad writing, odd medical disorders, fried chicken heads and other "tasty" delicacies from around the world, really strange solutions to problems, strange showbiz acts and much, much more.

It's all true and it's all entertaining. Buy it, you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars WOW! This is a keeper!.......2007-05-11

Not many books have, for me, been so emotionally draining. In the beginning of the book, while reading in bed at night the night before last, I had a hard time keeping my laughter to myself so that I wouldn't wake my husband. Last night, I got so lost in it, I couldn't put it down. In the end I had to leave the last few chapters till this morning. Maybe it was just because I was so tired after so little sleep, but the last three chapters had me sobbing. I will definitely be reading this one again.

3 out of 5 stars Rich titled English people.......2007-03-19

You have to like to read about the rich, titled, shallow, pointless English society of the 1800's to enjoy this book. True the beginning was good and nobody on the planet would not like the Alex character in the first few chapters, but she becomes boring and shallow pretty quick and ready to forget the 'old' life. I KNOW, I KNOW she WAS sad for a WHOLE year while she diligently worked to be the best little rich girl in London, but... ah, come on.

Warm and calmly authoritative, Lidia Bastianich has won the trust of many cooks, who also devour her TV shows and books including Lidia's Italian Table and Lidia's Italian-American Kitchen. Lidia's Family Table also presents homey Italian fare--savory dishes like Cauliflower Soup with Poached Garlic Purée; Potato, Leek, and Bacon Ravioli; Skillet Green Beans with Gorgonzola; and Grilled Tuna Rollatini Under Tomato-Lemon Marinade--over 200 recipes in all. But Family Table is equally about technique; readers will find it crammed with instructive asides like "Using 'Pasta Water' to Make a Quick Sauce" (the water's starchiness can add body to sauces) and "Reduced Wine Vinegar for Vegetables" (heat-concentrated vinegar makes a deliciously mellow seasoning).

But the teaching doesn't stop there. Bastianich's discussions of risotto and polenta are particularly good (when preparing risotto, for example, the liquid must simmer for the dish to become properly toothsome), while a section on quick skillet sauces, like one made with sausage, onions, and fennel, will get many readers to the kitchen pronto. Bastianich also offers advice for preparing lesser-known yet attractive meat cuts like shoulder and butt, as well as quick-take recipes for the likes of whole corn cooked in tomato sauce and eggplant with scrambled eggs. The Bastianich approach also applies to the dessert section, which offers simple fruit-based sweets like Fig Focaccia, and Crostata with Poached Apricots and Pignolala. (Included, too, are a number of simple strudel recipes, a bow to the cooking of Istria, Bastianich's birthplace.) Color photos make succinct technical points as well as showing Lidia's extended family at table and very much in action. --Arthur Boehm

    Book Description

The best-loved and most-admired of all America’s television cooks today, Lidia Bastianich, now gives us her most generous, instructive, and creative cookbook. The emphasis here is on cooking for the family, and her book is filled with unusually delicious basic recipes for everyday eating Italian-style, as well as imaginative ideas for variations and improvisations.

Here are more than 200 fabulous new dishes that will appeal both to Lidia’s loyal following, who have come to rely on her wonderfully detailed recipes, and to the more adventurous cook ready to experiment.

    • She welcomes us to the table with tasty bites from the sea (including home-cured tuna and mackerel), seasonal salads, and vegetable surprises (Egg-Battered Zucchini Roll-Ups, Sweet Onion Gratinate).

    • She reveals the secret of simple make-ahead soup bases, delicious on their own and easy to embellish for a scrumptious soup that can make a meal.

    • She opens up the wonderful world of pasta, playing with different shapes, mixing and matching, and creating sauces while the pasta boils; she teaches us to make fresh egg pastas, experimenting with healthful ingredients–whole wheat, chestnut, buckwheat, and barley. And she makes us understand the subtle arts of polenta- and risotto-making as never before.

    • She shares her love of vegetables, skillet-cooking some to intensify their flavor, layering some with yesterday’s bread for a lasagna-like gratin, blanketing a scallop of meat with sautéed vegetables, and finishing seasonal greens with the perfect little sauce.

    • She introduces us to some lesser-known cuts of meats for main courses (shoulders, butts, and tongue) and underused, delicious fish (skate and monkfish), as well as to her family’s favorite recipes for chicken and a beautiful balsamic-glazed roast turkey.

    • And she explores with us the many ways fruits and crusts (pie, strudel, cake, and toasted bread) marry and produce delectable homey desserts to end the meal.

Lidia’s warm presence is felt on every page of this book, explaining the whys and wherefores of what she is doing, and the brilliant photographs take us right into her home, showing her rolling out pasta with her grandchildren, bringing in the summer harvest, and sitting around the food-laden family table. As she makes every meal a celebration, she invites us to do the same, giving us confidence and joy in the act of cooking.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Basic Italian Cookbook.......2007-09-01

I really liked the completeness of her recipies, with lots of cooking tips and techniques so the book could be used by a beginning cook or a veteran in the kitchen. For me the directions were a bit wordy to want to use the book a lot, but once the techniques are learned, I feel like I can be creative and use this as a quick reference.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book as with her others.......2007-07-08

I love this book as well as Lidia's other books, not only the receips but the heartfelt stories.Beautiful colorful pictures, easy receipes.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook!.......2007-05-13

If you love to cook, you'll love this cookbook. The directions are a breeze to follow, with photographs of some of the techniques. The recipes are fab, and there is room to be creative. Being a fan of the PBS series, it's great to see a show, then be able to go to the book and re-create the recipe. Generally, after seeing a cooking show, making the shown meal isn't really in the cards. But, like Delia Smith's series and books, Lidia gives the same quality and access to her art. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book for myself and loved it so much that I ordered another one for my grown son. He loves it as much as I do... Wonderful book, great Recipies. True to her style wich is simply Wonderful!

    5 out of 5 stars A new favorite cookbook.......2007-04-08

I've enjoyed Lidia's Public TV cooking program for years, and now have recently read her cookbook. It's a real testament to Italian home cooking being the glue holding a family together. The editors kindly allow Lidia's voice to come through her writing so saliently that I could imagine her telling the stories and sharing the historical information abou the foods as she cooks them. A real winner for those seeking to change up their typical Italian dishes for tastier, more interesting choices.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Anyone Who's Ever Asked TheQuestion.......2007-10-07

If you have ever wondered why you're single, this is the book for you. It surpassed my expectations and is something I'll be recommending to friends. The book deals with the complexities in personal relationships and causes you to analyze your own behavior and confront some of your issues. It is LESS about men and their behavior and more about you: Which is the way to find healthy love by having happiness begin with you. Some great topics it covers are: examining your hidden ambivalence, how to say no when you're in the wrong relationship, how to detect and avoid men who aren't going to commit, and the best part: how to identify and say no to "BTN's", which are better than nothing relationships. A pivatol point in the book was when she discussed how you can be with a really great guy, but there might be one thing missing. And if it's something big then you have to walk away rather than settle for someone who is "almost" Mr. Right. I think many people settle and this book will show you how not to.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and useable helpful hints.......2007-09-27

Very interesting hints and points how to meet people who match with your intrests and needs.

3 out of 5 stars Step one, find a huge group of availble partners .......2007-07-05

If you really don't know how to attract a mate, are subconsciously avoiding finding one, or tend to make poor choices....this book is for you. On the other hand, if you would love to find the perfect life partner but are limited by the number of available people of the same sexual orientation, age, attractiveness or social class, this book will not help you. It depends heavily on your having a reasonably large dating pool. She makes it sound like everyone has enough people in their social circle to create an endless reject list if necessary.

    4 out of 5 stars Non-sentimental, good advice.......2007-05-18

It will probably make you want to break up with the person you are dating...which may be why you are reading the book. I thought the first half of the book was the best part and had some very good points and was insightful. The second half of the book--less interesting. But I did buy it for a few girlfriends who needed to read it.

    5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2007-01-30

I bought this book in 1990 and still have my copy with multi-layers of highlighting. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I learned so much and, to this day, I still use the term "psuedo intimacy" in discussions about relationships. (I also refer to "psuedo love" which SP does not use in her book but which is clearly inspired by her and inferred.)

From Chapter 6: "Understanding the distinction between pseudo-intimate games and real intimacy is the best defense against getting deeply involved with a person who cannot open up to you, become vulnerable, and share closely in the way a lifetime of living together demands." "...now, a relationship can move from formal to friendly to sexual in the course of one evening. ... The (Closeness Game) game looks and feels like genuine intimacy but leaves you feeling empty in the end."

From Chapter 10: "...if you are still single because of a lack of self-awareness and self-acceptance, then all the strategies and techniques in the world won't be very useful to you. A good relationship with yourself is a prerequisite for a successful relationship with the person you love. If you don't love yourself, you will place an unfair and impossible burden on your partner: you will try to get him or her to make you feel good about yourself. ...self awareness is an ongoing, ever expanding process."

That and much, much more is contained within the pages of this book. Highly, highly, highly recommended. Life-changing (for the better).

    Book Description

In a time of jihad "against Jews and Crusaders," the Jews of America and Israel find themselves with a powerful albeit unlikely ally: tens of millions of American evangelicals. As the conflict in the Middle East roils and divisions harden, Israel, a nation at war, welcomes this Christian support, whereas the American Jewish establishment—liberal, secular, and Democratic—remains wary. This tension, along with the question of whether the Jews will embrace the evangelicals' offer of partnership before it is too late, is at the heart of Zev Chafets's incisive and compelling new book.

Over the course of a year, Chafets, a former New York Daily News columnist and onetime director of the Israeli government press office, travels the world, tracing the improbable confluence of Jews and evangelicals. Along the way, Chafets meets Jerry Falwell and his national championship debate squad, visits Jewish cadets at West Point, heads to Virginia to tour Pat Robertson's university, meets the Pentecostal priest of Wall Street, attends the world's biggest Christian retail show, accompanies the rabbi with the biggest gentile following since Jesus on a road trip, travels the Holy Land with a band of repentant Christian pilgrims, and breaks bread with George W. Bush (and five hundred fellow Jewish Republicans).

Although Chafets spins a penetrating, engaging, and often hilarious narrative, A Match Made in Heaven has at its core some very serious questions: How is the relationship between Jews and Christians changing? Why do evangelicals support Israel so strongly? Is their philo-Semitism just a front for their true purpose to convert Jews? Do the evangelicals, as their opponents charge, really want to use the Jews as cannon fodder at the battle of Armageddon? Or are they simply responding to the biblical commandment to love Israel? Finally, is the American Jews' fear of fundamentalist Christianity based on constitutional principle—or social and cultural snobbery and political partisanship?

Equal parts history, comedy, travelogue, and political tract, A Match Made in Heaven is a smart and adventurous trip along a rapidly changing religious and political border.

The addition I would make to what others have said is that it would probably be a good idea to precede this book with The Restoration of Israel, which has an entire historical background of Christian Zionism. The Restoration of Israel: Christian Zionism in Religion, Literature, and Politics (American University Studies VII: Theology and Religion)

Culture in the US is endlessly diverse. Americans are charitable and appeals on
TV can raise hundreds of millions of dollars for such aims as returning
Jews to Israel (Palestine). This book describes one such effort by a Rabbi
that has been and continues to be successful. Evangelical Christians are
charitable toward this cause in particular. In case you have been wondering
about such appeals on Fox News just read this book and you will understand.
It is both informative and a fun read by an investigative journalist.

Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (3/07)

Zev Chafets writes with the easy flow of a well-informed journalist with years of experience and expertise in the arena of Israeli politics and government. "A Match Made in Heaven" focuses on the American evangelical support of the nation Israel.

Chafets maintains that Israel needs friends and asserts that the mainstream in Israel rely on and appreciate evangelical support, contrary to the views of American journalists. He takes the stance that in recent years Evangelical Christians, as well as American Jews, have become a major influence on the continuing support of United States to Israel.

Chafets' position in the book represents the viewpoint of Israeli and American Jewish leaders. He discusses issues of eschatology of the Christian faith as it relates to the development of the "end times."

His analysis includes the urgency for Israel to look at the Muslim fascists not the evangelical Christian as the "enemy."

He warns the liberal American Jew to guard against being suspicious of evangelical support "based on stereotypes, knew-jerk partisanship, or simple prejudice." He suggests they take a closer look at Christian Zionism, especially in a time of Muslim terrorism and war.

Although not as outspoken as Jerry Falwell, nor as charismatic as Pat Robertson, I consider myself a born-again evangelical. I found Chafets' barbs stinging, humorous and often pretty accurate. Chafets understands the tenets, claims, and practices of the evangelical Christian faith better then many professed adherents.

"A Match Made in Heaven" should grab the attention of both the American Jew and the conservative evangelical Christian. Chafets' writing is thought-provoking, succinct, entertaining, and exemplifies good journalism.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining look at a serious issue.......2007-04-15

This absorbing book examines Jewish-Christian relations under the headings: Among The Christians; Is It Good For The Jews? and Afterword: Wartime. The variety in the narrative which jumps from history to current affairs to personal experiences and interviews, all infused with the author's witty and irreverent style, makes it a highly enjoyable read.

In chapter 1 Chafets recounts his hilarious childhood experiences with religion in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1967 he moved to Israel where he lived for 9 years before settling in New York with his family. The rest of Part One deals with subjects as diverse as the first Jews to come to America, the philo-semitism of the Puritans, the history of Christian Zionism with reference to William Blackstone and the Balfour Declaration, and US foreign policy towards Israel after World War II.

It was interesting to learn that there are warm relations between Israelis and Christian Zionists, where the issue is not even controversial. This contrasts sharply with the political divide between Jewish Liberals and Evangelical Christians in the USA. Chafets provides outspoken but sympathetic portraits of Christian leaders and institutions like Jerry Falwell and Liberty University, and Pat Robertson and Regent University.

His description of a pilgrimage in Israel with a group of Christians is moving and sometimes quite hilarious, and includes several thought-provoking interviews where the Israelophile Christians speak for themselves. There is no stereotyping and the perspectives and opinions of the individuals concerned are presented with empathy.

In the chapter Revenge Of The Mainline, the author explores the history of the World Council Of Churches and its hostility to Israel, liberation theology and the conflicting attitudes of the evangelicals and the liberal mainstream churches towards the Jewish homeland, including the divestment attempts within the Presbyterian and United Methodist churches.

Part 2 opens with the history and work of Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein's International Fellowship Of Chistians and Jews and then looks at Abraham Foxman of the Anti Defamation League and his hostile stance against the Christian Right. Next Chafets investigates the rising tide of anti-semitism worldwide and the recent spate of books attacking Evangelical Christianity with their scaremongering theme of a "theocracy" in the USA.

In the chapter titled The Iraq War And Its Aftermath, he points out the convergence of views between people like Walt & Mearsheimer, Jimmy Carter and David Duke. He could also have mentioned Pat Buchanan. Other topics include AIPAC, relations between US administrations and Israeli leaders since the 1970s and the aforementioned partisan divide. As the author puts it: "Jews are Democrats, Israelis are Republicans."

The main policy differences seem to be abortion, gay marriage, the issue of proselytising and the idea of Armageddon. I found the account of the visit of Rabbi Eric Yoffie to Liberty University in 2005 highly amusing, especially Yoffie's discomfort when Falwell used the word "barbarian" during an interview. Finally, Chafets observes that in their support for Israel, Christian Zionists are completely immune to the ideas of "progressive" intellectuals and European "sophisticates" or accusations of dual loyalty. This is significant.

The Afterword provides a vivid picture of Israel during the 2006 Hezbollah War; Chafets and his family were there. In the USA, most of the anti-Israel voices came from the Left. John Hagee's Christians United For Israel was the first to hold a pro-Israel rally in Washington, Pat Robertson visited Israel and Evangelical support for Eckstein's IFCJ soared to record highs. The book ends with the observation that the Judeo-Christian alliance does not require Jews to become Republicans or Christians, but that better understanding and more mutual respect would be beneficial. This highly entertaining and thought-provoking work concludes with an index.

I just read the book during a car trip from Atlanta, GA to Louisville, KY. I am an Evangelical Christian and as such, a strong advocate of the Land of Israel belonging to the Jewish people because of what the Bible teaches concerning it. I laughed at many parts, winced at others, but overall was very touched by the insight and thorough research of Zev Chafets. Mr. Chafets didn't examine from afar; he made it a personal quest with many "field trips" to gain personal understanding of this necessary and dearly unique alliance. His caring criticism of both parties can only help to further this "match," that hopefully will never cease.
