Book Description

This easy-to-read book emphasizes how to use basic economic theory and where to apply it to international economic issues. It empowers readers to understand the international economics they will encounter in business publications such as the Wall Street Journal, and to use international economics to make business decisions. The first half of the book covers international trade, factor movements, and trade and economic development; the final ten chapters on international finance can be divided into at least three parts: national income accounting and exchange rate determination; purchasing power parity and the real exchange rate; and open economy macroeconomics. A useful reference for government officials dealing with international trade and finance issues, and for private citizens who want to learn more about the effect of international economics on business in the 21 st century.

5 out of 5 stars Simplified, but not dumbed-down.......2007-07-09

I found this text to be an excellent introduction to international economics, especially for a student who is not an economics major. As a business and political science student, I found the text simplified many of the concepts to a point that was understandable but not insulting. Moreover, the range of topics was perfect for a semester.

My takeaways from the text were:
-The scope and content of international trade.
-Why international trade is important and beneficial.
-Absolute vs. Comparative Advantage.
-The barriers of trade, and their effects at the macro- and micro-economic level.
-National income accounting and Balance of Payments.
-Introduction to International Financial Markets.
-An overview of trade agreements, especially the WTO.

The text built a solid foundation. The companion website to the book really helped me understand the information on a broader level, and was an invaluable tool in finding great sources for my research.

5 out of 5 stars Helping me start my own business.......2007-09-16

This manual has helped me catch up on the entire web design movement with Cascading Style Sheets that I need to brush up on. As an owner of my own graphic design business, I needed to refresh my skills on Dreamweaver 8 and this manual with its easy-to-follow tutorials and sense of humor sprinkled throughout certainly helped me do that. David Sawyer McFarland helps you each step of the way. Definitely recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver-Missing Manual.......2007-09-04

This book works through every aspect of the Dreamweaver program, but is still a bit difficult to understand unless you are an experienced website creator.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE Dreamweaver book.......2007-08-20

I went through every book review, then checked out all the books at the local Book Superstore and ended up getting this, although I wondered why it only had 4.5 stars.
It is the perfect book for DW8 and fully deserves 5 full stars! I had been using DW4 for five years and it is nice that this book is both understandable and not over simplified.

5 out of 5 stars Thank god for this book........2007-07-21

I've never taken the time to review anything on the web before and have always been amazed by the numbers of people who do. That being said, I had to tell people how much I love this book. The last site I designed was a tiny static site back in 2001 using golive and I recently committed to building two database sites. I went though many, many books + tutorials and none are as good as this one. [...].

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a Keeper.......2007-07-10

I very seldom take the time to write reviews, and usually do so to warn people away from an awful book. This is the exception; I loved this book.

To give some perspective to my review, I am a professional programmer but a complete "newbie" to web design and development. I've taken on the task of creating and maintaining a web site for a local summer swim team. I needed help and I needed it quickly.

My first stop was "Macromeda Dreamweaver 8" by Short and Green. This is a good book for beginners to get their feet wet with Dreamweaver 8. However, after doing all the exercises, I did not get the feeling that I actually could design a nice web page and knew for sure that I couldn't create a form with a working submit button.

Then I bought this book, "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual". The first few chapters cover the basic building blocks of using text, images and links. The next section deals with how to design a web page; first using tables and then using CSS. Other sections of the book deal with forms and how to set up Dreamweaver to manage your remote site and a testing site. (I find it much easier to let Dreamweaver figure out what files are out of date rather than use a stand-alone FTP program.) The last section of the book deals with dynamic web pages and was the answer to my quest for a functioning "submit" button on my web forms. This section is what sealed the 5-star rating for me. The book's tutorials use the ASP server model, but you can download equivalent tutorials for PHP/MySQL from the author's web site. I found all the tutorials to work (and I did almost every single one), but do check the author's errata page.

For you programmers out there who are getting into the web, this book mostly stays with the Dreamweaver wizards and does not delve into code view (probably a good thing for the non-programmers). If you are into coding and PHP, a good next step is "PHP for Dreamweaver 8", by David Powers. The Powers book covers a lot of the same dynamic web ground as "The Missing Manual", but is not afraid to dive into code view.

All in all, I was very happy with "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual". It's a big book packed with information, but easy to read. Based on what I've learned, I was able to create a decently attractive web site, some very useful forms and private areas for team administrators and coaches.

Book Description

Honey Malone was on the run, fleeing a dangerous predator, when she lost control of her car, drove into a lake—and found herself up to her neck in breathtaking men. After the brothers nursed her through her injuries, she tried to leave, but she hadn't bargained on their stubborn protectiveness. Or the passionate bond that tied her to Sawyer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best series!.......2007-07-29

First and foremost, here is my order of the brothers (books):

Gabe
Jordan
Sawyer
Morgan

I thought I ought to write my review here for all four books because all were just outstanding they deserve my review since I read all four in the course of less than two weeks.

My least favorite book, but not brother, is "Morgan." From the time I read about Morgan from Sawyer's story, I was really interested in the character. He was bold, blunt, dark, and very caring but that feeling was covered by his strongness, intimidation, and just plain scary. When I was finally read Morgan's story, I was sad. Yeah, Morgan was still blunt and straight-foward as ever but I'm not sure why his story was the least appealing than the others. The scenes and even "love" scene was just blah. I was expecting some excitment, some hard-edge, rough scene but didn't get it. I was disappointed. Yay for Morgan for finding love, and being such a great guy to Misty toward the end, but his character wasn't well presented in his story than he was in book one.

Book one with Sawyer and Honey was a great first book for the series. I really like reading more about Sawyer, and how he became a dad and such a great guy. Also, how he was able to fall in love again and marry when he swore he would not do that again. Honey is good for him. I enjoyed reading their story. And even more excited to learn they had a baby together later in the series.

"Jordan" book 4 was another great. I just wish they would have added more animals in the book. Since Jordan was a vet, it would have been nice to see his softer side more during his story. Jordan appears to be the quiet, more to himself kind of guy than his brothers and I love that about him, but he wasn't all shy or quiet in this book. I like guys who are shy, and you have to get to know them. I was not expecting to see him fall in love with a stripper but it was good for him. He cared for her, and her family so quickly, and easily. It was a nice read, and his "love" scene was soooo exceptionally well written! Probably my favorite one out of all the brothers.

And now Gabe, book three, was my favorite book! And I thought it was going to be my least because his character from the get go seemed as if he had no a clue what he wanted to do with himself. Even from book one and book two, Gabe was the man who just lounged around, worked when he wanted to when he felt like it, and that was pretty much it. I was getting a bit worried about him, and when I read the first few pages of his book he was still same old Gabe. But this book turned around for me 100% and I couldn't put the book down at all. It was great, very romantic, and unexpected. I fell in love with Gabe and Elizabeth. Every scene was awesome, well-written, and I fell in love!

I have already read Casey but that was some time ago and once the reissued comes out I won't be able to wait to read it again!

Check out all four of these books! They are sooooooo great!

5 out of 5 stars Book #1 in this series.......2007-07-04

For this type of book (easy read, not much too it), but still a nice read, I give it 5 stars. Normally, I reserve 5 stars for really great books, but this series is in its own little category. This was a cute story. Short and sweet, well written and kept me entertained. Both characters are very likeable. Nice romance with some steam. Male hero to the rescue of the "damsel in distress" though setting is modern times.

5 out of 5 stars Sawyer.......2007-06-08

Lori never lets you down. A great read! I'm looking forward to the next Buckhorn Brothers book.

5 out of 5 stars The first of four great books! Sawyer the local Doctor !.......2007-06-05

This series is fantastic you have four handsome, intelligent, real honest men who love women. The underline theme is that good men do exist. Each brother gets his own book and each fall in love even though they don't want to.... Buy the whole series, get glass of favorite beverage and enjoy! Buckhorn Brothers Series Sawyer (Book 1), Morgan (Book 2), Gabe (Book 3) Jordan (Book 4)and Casey (Book 5 published in 2002).

5 out of 5 stars Great Fast Read!.......2007-05-23

Loved this series. Sawyer was a great leading man. The whole family seemed to be too good to be true. I just wished the book had been longer since the story seemed to go too fast.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away. You'll get more from a "Hardy Boys" book........2004-08-18

One of the worst text books I have ever had to suffer through. The verbage seems to come from some one who would rather be writing bad novels and doesn't want anybody to really understand what's being said. Furthermore, the review questions at the end of each chapter, in many cases, had nothing to do with the chapter they follow or even any information in the book itself on occasion. The remaining questions are written so vaguely you have to spend twice as long searching back through the text as it took to read it in the first place just to find something that resembles what the question is asking. It took me four days to read three chapters and finish the review questions at the end of two and I have no idea if I learned anything because the answer key is no where to be found. I can say this though, it may be vague and useless for a new learner, but at least it's longwinded and tiresome.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing update to a classic book.......2004-07-27

I am currently using this book to teach a college-level class in internal auditing. I initially chose it over Brink's Modern Internal Auditing (which I thought was very good but which was written at a rather high reading level) because 1) it was newer and less expensive for my students; 2) it purported to cover Sarbanes-Oxley; and 3) the previous edition was very good and I expected the same or better from the new edition.

However, what I found was that the new material was apparently thrown in without much attempt to integrate it with the original material. Many of the new sections are basically each a review of a single article. Therefore, there is language such as this in the section on Risk Disclosure Considerations in the Risk Assessment Chapter:

The writer analyzes FASB 5 and AcSEC SOP 94-6 in providing descriptive language that should be of interest to internal auditors . . . The writer suggests that inasmuch as the above disclosure taxonomy is incident to organizational management . . .

It is not a standard approach to refer to *the writer* and creates some confusion among my students.

Another problem with this approach is that some of the articles reviewed overlap with other textbook material, so there is a lot of redundancy. In some cases, it is rather shocking that a better editing job was not performed.

I agree with a previous review about the end-of-chapter questions. They are often not covered in the text. It is quite difficult to even guess how some of the questions were determined to belong with a particular chapter. As an instructor, a test bank would have been helpful also. The previous edition did have one; this does not.

Having said that, I will continue using this textbook until I'm sure I've found something better. It is definitely comprehensive! Many of my students enjoy Sawyer's trademark, colorful prose. However, I have gotten the comment from several students that the book must have been designed as a handbook for experienced auditors rather than as a textbook because it is so different from anything they have experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Sawyers Internal Auditing.......2003-12-23

I used this text for a performance auditing class. It is an excellant book. It contains more information than a person could learn in one class, we only went through about half the book. It is a must for anyone interested in becoming an internal auditor. It is easy to understand, and follows a logical format.

3 out of 5 stars Test portion an abortion.......2000-08-08

I have not only read the book, but taken the test portions that go along with it. It gives a good history of internal auditing for those new to the auditing field. It is also helpful to those with a moderate degree of experience. However, you will need to take the course from the USDA in order to find out what the chapter review answers are. I speculate 90% of them are just to vague! Other chapter review questions will not known until after you have read a chapter ahead. Example, some of the answers to chapter 2 review you will find from reading chapter 3. In chapter 23's test review if I recall, most of the answers come from chapter 22 etc. I did find it in my heart to give the book a 3 star because the information was helpful, but I would wait until 5th edition. As far as I know the course is not worth any college credit but should be good for CPE credit.

Book Description

This book tells the story of human evolution, the epic of Homo sapiens and its colorful precursors and relatives. The story begins in Africa, six to seven million years ago, and encompasses twenty known human species, of which Homo sapiens is the sole survivor. Illustrated with spectacular, three-dimensional scientific reconstructions portrayed in their natural habitat developed by a team of physical anthropologists at the American Museum of Natural History and in concert with experts from around the world, the book is both a guide to extinct human species and an astonishing hominid family photo album.
The Last Human presents a comprehensive account of each species with information on its emergence, chronology, geographic range, classification, physiology, lifestyle, habitat, environment, cultural achievements, co-existing species, and possible reasons for extinction. Also included are summaries of fossil discoveries, controversies, and publications. What emerges from the fossil story is a new understanding of Homo sapiens. No longer credible is the notion that our species is the end product of a single lineage, improved over generations by natural selection. Rather, the fossil record shows, we are a species with widely varied precursors, and our family tree is characterized by many branchings and repeated extinctions.
Exhibition information:
Photographs of most of the reconstructions that appear in this book will be featured in exhibits appearing in the new Hall of Human Origins at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The opening of the Hall is planned for November 2006.

Brilliant and beautiful, this book may help those who still don't grasp human evolution.

The artwork is spectacular and succeeds at bringing long-extinct hominids back from the dead.

5 out of 5 stars A catalogue of cousins.......2007-08-02

There's a great deal of information available to the interested seeker of human origins. What has been lacking is a good descriptive overview and logical arrangement of the fossils found. Sawyer and Deak have responded to that need with this volume. Arranged in order of the oldest to the youngest of fossil specimens, the authors summarise which parts have been uncovered. In addition, they further descriptions of the likelihood of bipedalism, the known locations with assumed roaming areas, the associated wildlife and climate information. A special feature presents the way the "man-ape" probably appeared in its natural habitat.

The oldest fossils are very fragmentary and lead more to suggestions as to how they fit in the human lineage. Some clearly were successful creatures in their own right, but likely lie in a line that died out in time. Those aged pieces need further finds to establish their place - the chief reason the authors describe the probable range they inhabited. Later, more complete, fossils offer more information. The authors begin depicting fossil pieces in a restored placement with Australopithicus afarensis, the now-famous "Lucy" revealed by Don Johanson and his team in 1973. The authors provide an almost startling image of this hominid searching the savannah for her "lost daughter" - a very human characteristic. Laetoli's preserved footprints are described with the implications for how close to modern humans A. afarensis could stride.

After "Lucy's" time, about 3.5 million years ago, hominids developed into many and varied types. Lucy's fossils were found in Ethiopia, but a million years later a new species, with robust jaws and bearing a crested cranium appeared. Paranthropus aethiopicus had nutcracker jaws and was more sturdily built than Lucy. Yet, in the same time frame, Lucy's likely direct successors also emerged. One of these may have been the first to apply tools to aid food processing. Far away in what is now South Africa, other branches of Lucy's clan may have evolved as a result of earlier forebears migrating. Within another half-million years, examples of hominids in the direct lineage to today's humans appear, only a short distance from the supposed range of Lucy's wanderings. Their descendents launched new migrations traced by finds to the east of their original homelands.

The recent find near Dmanisi in Georgia provides a look at hominid life nearly 2 million years ago. Flaked stone, likely used for meat cutting, although no bones with cut marks have yet been revealed. A contemporary of the Georgian hominid wandered yet further east, typified by the skull and thigh bone excavated by Eugene Dubois in 1891. Homo habilis has been found in other sites, demonstrating its wandering habits. The most astonishing find outside our African origins is the small hominid, H. floresienses, discovered in a cave in Indonesia.

Ultimately, of course, the sole survivor of hominid evolution, Homo sapiens, outlasted its many competitors. The last major contender alongside our species was Home neanderthalis, ranging from today's Middle East into Western Europe. The authors' coverage of this species is thorough, but not extravagant. Moving to our species, Sawyer and Deak provide a good overview of the factors used in classifying the fossils without greatly extending their coverage in comparison to the other topics. To conclude the book, they describe the techniques used in making the representative images of the various hominid species discussed in the text. The key point is how they developed the faces in the images. These stand in stark contrast to some of the historical illustrations of "early man" done earlier.

This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in our ancestral past. Written in a straightforward manner, the authors give the available data, describing various speculations with care. They avoid dwelling on the many controversial questions that have plagued palaeoanthropology, and have no particular positions of their own to forward or defend. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictorial Guide To Human Evolution For Those Who Aren't Scientists.......2007-07-05

"The Last Human: A Guide to Twenty-Two Species of Extinct Humans" is a beautiful, illustrated guide to human evolution that's aimed for a scientifically literate general audience, without much of the terminology associated with paleoanthropology and other relevant aspects of physical anthropology. The principal authors, physical anthropologist Gary P. Sawyer and artist Viktor Deak, are the co-leaders of the Fossil Hominid Reconstruction and Research Team based at the American Museum of Natural History's Department of Anthropology, which has used the techniques of forensic anthropology to recreate these vivid illustrations of these extinct hominid species, often relying on the latest paleoanthropologic research (though, in a couple of instances, the authors observe that some artistic license was taken with the final appearance of several individuals). This book is essentially a visual companion to the dioramas and other related displays featured in the recently opened Spitzer Hall of Human Origins at the American Museum of Natural History, in which the reconstructions made by Sawyer and Deak have taken their rigntful prominent places as among the most intriguing in this elegant hall devoted to human evolution. If nothing else, both this book and this new permanent exhibition, demonstrate more convincingly than ever, that human evolution has been an increasingly "tangled web" of species diversity, of which Homo Sapiens - humanity - is the sole surviving species. In addition to Sawyer's and Deak's contributions, there is eloquent writing too from Richard Milner, an anthropologist and writer who is affiliated with both the museum's anthropology department and Natural History Magazine. The book's text does an admirable job covering not only the paleontology of each species (e. g. geological and paleobiogeographic range, palecological reconstruction), but also delves into the probable cultural attributes of each of the twenty-two hominid species. Without question, this book is artistically - and scientifically - the latest word on human evolution aimed for a general audience; I strongly commend Yale University Press for trying to keep its production costs to a minimum to ensure a potentially large audience for it.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Extended Family Photo Album.......2007-07-03

"The Last Human: A Guide to Twenty-Two Species of Extinct Humans" is a numinous, scientifically accurate, and artistically inspired depiction of human evolution - the ultimate extended family photo album and history - that follows the emergence of 22 human species from our primordial cradle in Africa six to seven million years ago to the dawn of Homo sapiens.

Unlike overly popularized accounts, "The Last Human" unflinchingly notes that Homo sapiens was not an inevitable outcome. Environment and contingency generated, and the fossil record documents, a hominid family tree sprouting many branches including forerunners, relatives, and extinctions. Photorealistic three-dimensional reconstructions portray hominids such as Australopithecus afarensis, Homo rhodesiensis, Homo erectus, and Homo neanderthalensis (among others) with startling and emotionally evocative intensity.

The accompanying text provides a comprehensive account of each species with information on its emergence, chronology, geographic range, classification, physiology, lifestyle, habitat, environment, cultural achievements, co-existing species, and possible reasons for extinction.

By masterfully merging scientific insight and artistic interpretation into a coherent and compelling whole "The Last Human" eloquently articulates how family history is everyone's heritage. This is a category-defining book that deserves to be widely read. It has my highest recommendation.

This book is the work of the artists and scientists of the Fossil Hominid Reconstruction and Research Team. Sawyer is the physical anthropologist and Deak is the paleoartist. They take all that is known about each species within the genera Australopithicus, Ardipithicus, and Homo, and synthesize that data into stunning, beautiful, and somewhat disturbing likenesses of individuals. Whether in forecasting the future or in reconstructing the past, the further you get from the present day, the more uncertainty is introduced. The authors admit to a blending of science and art, and they admit that the more flimsy the fossil record, the greater their artistic license. It is said that all of the known fossils of proto-humans would fit in the bed of a pickup truck, and it is with this implicit caveat in mind that you must evaluate the accuracy of the reconstructions. Also, only bone fossilizes, and this is a book about soft tissue, so there is considerable inductive logic implicit in the reconstructions. But, hey, it's a good start, and it's more than we had before Sawyer and Deak had their inspiration. My guess is that any future corrections to their work will likely appear immaterial to the scientifically literate general reader which is their target audience.

All of the paleoanthropological discoveries in the text of this elegant photo album of proto-humans have been published before, and the authors do not claim offer new theories or interpretations of hominid evolution. The reason you will want to read this book is to meet your family in the flesh, to see what your ancestors looked like. Take each reconstruction as a hypothesis; this is what they most likely looked like, based on our current interpretation of the fossil record.

This book's stunning illustrations will be certain to attract a fresh audience of paleoanthropological novices, and they will find, after their initial shock, that the authors present a rather comprehensive introductory course in the topic. It is a welcome addition to a bibliography of recent books aimed at the general reader, including "The Dawn of Human Culture", by Richard Klein, "From Lucy to Language," by Donald Johansen, "Extinct Humans," by Ian Tattersall and Jeffrey Schwartz, and "Becoming Human," by Ian Tattersal (see my Amazon reviews). This book doesn't require a vocabulary in craniodental morphology, and for the most part scientific terms are avoided. For instance, Sawyer uses the term "man-ape" instead of the term "hominid."

What emerges from these pages is the slow, but accelerating evolution of proto-humans, by a process of brutal natural selection, including many failed "branches" in the evolutionary tree, all but one ultimately leading to extinction, leaving only ourselves.

Book Description

Zacharias invites readers to follow him on this journey through his life and into the lives of others, and see how he has become more convinced with each year that Jesus Christ is the one who came to give us life to the fullest and to point us to the freedom and beauty of truth for everyone--easterner or westerner--all over the world.

5 out of 5 stars A Life of Exceptional Experiences Dosed w/ Humility.......2007-09-20

When this book first came out, I wasn't as interested as I was reading RZ's other more apologetic books. This was more of a biography, very anecdotal, but the more I read it, I saw how so many of what he's seen and experienced were just microcosms of so many worldviews. He himself was a huge cynic, but after his regenerative experience at the hospital, he was led to really explore who God was and His message through Jesus, as well as test the seemingly competitive other world views. And he quotes it accurately, saying the more he learned about other world views, the more beautiful Jesus became to him.

Sometimes his biography was comparable to Forrest Gump, with fortunate exceptional destiny, with the exception that Ravi had immense intellectual potential. But he has really humbly been appointedly woven into the lives of many other prominent theological giants, having also crossed paths with world leaders. It's just amazing to realize all he's been through, but only because of the grace of God...continually guiding His path, and using him, from great revivals to personal intimate testimonies.

And amidst all the glorious stories are his heartfelt intimate thoughts of his family and his closest friends, some who died of age, and some who died spreading the gospel. I'm not ashamed to say how much this book has moved me...it is probably one of the most personal books for me...

this book is definitely rich w/ great lessons, great experience, and great proof that God is really there in the shadows, slowly revealing and affirming His will in our lives at the duly appointed time.

it IS an exceptional life, a great book i sadly put down, wishing there was more to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-07-05

Ravi Zacharias truly is a man sent by God to bridge the gaps between East and West. As I read his fantastic story, I was amazed at how much of his story encouraged me in my own Christian walk. He went from being a teen who didn't like to read to being one of the most read apologist in the world.

As I continued to read his story, I was amazed at how much he does and how much of his family life was sacrificed by preaching God's word. The Lord gave him an understanding wife and beautiful children who understand his calling.

When he mentioned how over the years, he had lost his sense of humor because of the serious of apologetics, I felt sad for him. Preaching the Gospel is serious business and it is just that important but I believe God has blessed him richly.

The personal accounts of his friends who have paid for their beliefs with their lives were so inspiring and made me extremely reflective on my own Christian walk? Would I be willing to face all kinds of danger for Christ? I hope I never have to find out.

The book especially gives the reader a view of Eastern mentality and life. It was so vibrant and full of some many images and sounds. For the Western Christian, it is very important to understand the Easter mindset if we are to evangelize to our Eastern brothers.

I wish I could just shake Mr. Zacharias hand and just sit in his presence for an hour. I thank God for him and hope that he continues the good work.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting life. To God be the glory........2007-06-19

Oh! That more Indians would come to salvation and evanglize their country!
This book should have been a biography instead of an auto-biography because you can almost sense the reluctance for Ravi to reveal the full extent of the way God has used him. On a more negative note, if Indian Christians keep moving away from India, who is going to evanglize the country?

5 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opening Pleasure of a Read.......2007-05-02

This enormously vivid and readable book will capture your interest within the first few pages and keep it until the last. Mr. Zacharias has lived life fully, from his humble beginnings on a busy Indian street in his native land to the most prestigious professional and academic arenas all over the world--and met Christ on the way. In fact, that life-changing meeting is the core of what made him successful and motivated, and does so to this day. His is a wonderful story, especially the insights and anecdotes he gives us about India and its people, and of course how God came from "the shadows" to forever change his life. Ever think that God doesn't care about you? That he's not involved in your life? Read this book and listen closely--he may be speaking to you right here!

5 out of 5 stars How Refreshing.......2007-03-08

Zacharias' book will either be life-changing or life-affirming for the reader lucky enough to stumble across this amazing account of a life that saw so much pain and joy. To go along on his journey, watching him go from his desperate youth and into his successful and meaningful adult life is incredible. As someone who has been immersed in a Christian lifestyle her entire life, I find it remarkable that someone can come from such beginnings and end up the man that Ravi Zacharias has become. It really makes me think about how much of the Western experience I take for granted. Ravi is not only passionate about his faith, but he provides an intellectual basis for it as well, something that is often missing in evangelism today. The blend of Eastern and Western cultures presented in this book are extremely significant and helpful. This has caused me to take a new approach to different cultures and unbelievers. He is a living example of walking in someone else's shoes. I could say countless things to praise his life's work, but it seems to me that Zacharias would want any glory to be given to God. After reading this, that is how I want the things I do to be remembered...for the glory of God. I cannot wait to read more from this talented evangelist!

Book Description

Dr. Sarah Halifax decoded the first-ever radio transmission received from aliens. Thirty-eight years later, a second message is received and Sarah, now 87, may hold the key to deciphering this one, too . . . if she lives long enough.A wealthy industrialist offers to pay for Sarah to have a rollback-a hugely expensive experimental rejuvenation procedure. She accepts on condition that Don, her husband of sixty years, gets a rollback, too. The process works for Don, making him physically twenty-five again. But in a tragic twist, the rollback fails for Sarah, leaving her in her eighties. While Don tries to deal with his newfound youth and the suddenly vast age gap between him and his wife, Sarah struggles to do again what she'd done once before: figure out what a signal from the stars contains. Exploring morals and ethics on both human and cosmic scales, Rollback is the big new SF novel for 2007 by Hugo and Nebula Award-winner Robert J. Sawyer.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars eh. its okay........2007-10-02

While I am an avid Sawyer reader, this book while interesting pulled too much from ethical literature without fully exploring any of its ramifications. An interesting and quick read, but not nearly as satisfying as his other works.

5 out of 5 stars Good characters, good concept, and an easy read.......2007-08-25

Robert J. Sawyer's novels are always a treat for me. I have read them all. His characters are believeable and likeable. His ideas are unique and based on science that is not that far-fetched at all. Rollback is another one of those books that fits right into those categories. Sawyer is a master at developing ethical or moral issues for his characters in the way they respond to their environment, circumstances, etc.

Here we have Don Halifax, an Octogenarian who receives an expensive, highly sought after rollback that fixes all his innards to be that of a man in his 20's. His wife, also an Octogenarian, gets the same treatment but it fails. Don and his wife are still in love after 60 years of marriage but things get frustrating and confusing for Don as he sees his elderly wife fading away while he gets this other chance at life that he never actually asked for. All the while, Don's wife Sarah is trying to use her twilight years to assist an alien species that responded to a SETI message she sent years earlier during the prime of her career.

This book didn't have a real enemy per se just a lot of thought provoking ideas. I suppose the antogonist was Don's own psyche as he reacted to friends and family dying around him, guilt, frustrations, raging hormones, and looking younger than his own kids

The book is over 300 pages but you will get through it in no time, even with all the scientific research discussions thrown into the mix. It is also going to be his last book with TOR as his next book will have a new publisher.

By the way, I loved Gunther, the Robot and I wished there was more of him in the book.

4 out of 5 stars I want a Rollback!.......2007-08-23

After reading several Robert Sawyer novels i was excited about obtaining Rollback. The story is of an alien message to earth which is received and returned about 2013. 34 years later a new message arrives(17 years each way).
The science is interesting but the really interesting thing about the story is the personal interactions that transpire because of a aging reversal project done on the scientist who decoded the message and her husband. He goes from 88 to 25 years old physically.
This completely changes the dynamics of his marriage and how he is treated by society. Talk about age discrimination. Talk about raging hormones.
I love this societal aspect of most of Sawyer's writing. It actually overtakes the storyline for me. How would your life change if you could rollback to age 25...assuming you are considerably older than that now. How would your friends and relatives treat you. how about work...could you get a job.
A very thought provoking novel. I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Live Long and Be Joyful.......2007-08-19

Rollback (2007) is a standalone SF novel. It takes place mostly in Toronto, Ontario, about four decades from now. This story was first published as a serial within Analog, starting with the October 2006 issue.

In this novel, Sarah Halifax is a retired astronomer in her eighties. Her moment of fame occurred in 2010, when she interpreted the very first interstellar message. After her translation, a response was sent back to the aliens on Sigma Draconis, who had initiated the first message. Now a reply has been received to the human response and, once again, none can interrupt the message. It seems that the message is not only encoded for transmission, but is actually encrypted and no one knows the key.

Donald Halifax is Sarah's husband. When Cody McGavin -- a very rich man -- offers to pay for rejuvenation of Sarah to allow her more time (and energy) to work on the current message, Sarah insists that Donald be rejuvenated as well. So Donald becomes younger, but the procedure does not work for Sarah and she remains old.

However, Sarah continues working on the translation of the new message. She agrees with other translators that a key must have been incorporated in the first message or its response, but nothing can be found. Sarah searches the original messages to see if the key had been muddled in the copies.

In this story, Donald is now a very confused person. Donald and Sarah have been married for sixty years. They are used to doing everything together. They have raised two children and have two grandchildren. Donald hardly remembers his life before Sarah.

Suddenly Donald has the energy and libido of a twenty-five year old man, but is married to an eighty-seven year old woman. Donald is still full of energy when Sarah is drooping. When temptation comes his way, he struggles with his conflicting emotions. Then Donald becomes really interested in Lenore Darby, an astronomy graduate student, who reminds him of his Sarah. So he starts hanging out with people of his own apparent age.

This story is more about Donald than Sarah, but can anything about him be separated from her? His life has been hugely changed. He now has all the capabilities of the young with the experience of the old. Naturally, Donald wants his wife to also be young again, but is that possible? So what will he do for the rest of his extended life?

An early scene hints at the ideational origins of this novel. Sarah and Donald have a conversation about the long-term aspects of SETI, which leads to the notion of longevity. While persistence is necessary in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, such signals might be acquired at any point in time. Truly long-term continuity is only required for communications. As this story vividly illustrates, waiting for replies could take generations.

Highly recommended for Sawyer fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of alien communications, intergenerational relations, and true love.

-Arthur W. Jordin

5 out of 5 stars Though Provoking in Customary Sawyer Style .......2007-08-15

Robert Sawyer writes books about things we all think "what if?" In Rollback the what if scenario is "What if you could rejuvenate your body to the body of your youth?" Would you do it, if so, at what price? Set in the not so distant future, Sarah and Don are faced with this very situation. The choice that they make changes their lives and the lives of their families forever. Sawyer has a way of presenting his readers with a philosophical dialogue, where science allows plausible options. I am a big Robert Sawyer fan, and enjoy reading his work. This book did not disappoint, and I highly recommend it. Rollback (Sci Fi Essential Books)

Book Description

Presented here together for the first time are the greatest of the ancient Chinese classics of strategic thought: The Complete Art of War. Probably the most famous work of strategy ever written, Sun Tzu's Art of War has sold millions of copies in many languages around the world. Lost for more than 2000 years and only recently recovered, the Military Methods of Sun Pin (Sun Tzu's great-grandson) is a brilliant elaboration on his ancestor's work. Only The Complete Art of War brings the wisdom of these two ancient sages into a single volume and gives the reader a unique opportunity to master the essentials of Chinese thought on strategy, organization and leadership.

The Sun family writings on strategy have proven their value through the ages, and they continue to reward careful study. By unveiling the complex, often unexpected, interrelationships of armies locked in battle, they reveal the enduring principles of success in the struggle of life itself. With a practical index to the essential principles of strategy, and Ralph Sawyer's thoughtful chapter-by-chapter commentaries, The Complete Art of War  is designed to bring the reader new insights into the nature of human conflict.

Whether it is playing the game of politics or building a successful marriage, closing a deal or managing a large organization, making war or even making peace, The Complete Art of War  stands as one of the ultimate guides to a deeper understanding of human affairs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-01

Bought a copy. Lost it. HAD TO buy another to replace it. An excellent book, Sawyers commentaries modernize and place in context applicable to today's managers. Clearly a lot of work went into his explanations. A must have, must read, must study. Provided me with months worth of reading material at lunch.

5 out of 5 stars The teachings of the greatest military geniuses of all time........2003-11-10

Sun Tzu collected his teachings into the ancient Chinese treatise on military strategy known as "The Art of War" about twenty-five hundred years ago. Afterward his teachings were passed down through the Sun family, or a group of disciples, who edited or expounded upon the original writings until they assumed their current form. Sun Pin was the great-grandson of Sun Tzu, and he used the teachings of his brilliant ancestor to develop his Treatise "Military Methods". This wonderful translation by Ralph D. Sawyer includes both of these ancient texts.

"The Art of War" has been studied the world over by military, political and business leaders seeking to understand the nature of human conflict in all it's forms. Although thousands of years old, the teachings of Sun Tzu remain relevant even today. The maxims of Sun Tzu have been applied by students of "The Art of War" to such modern conflicts as the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Sun Tzu's teachings range from the seemingly simple, such as "Someone unfamiliar with the mountains and forests cannot advance the army", to the more complex and thought provoking, such as "In order await the disordered. In tranquility await the clamorous. This is the way to control the mind." The manual covers such diverse topics as training, supplies, terrain, the seasons and the use of spys, and includes detailed commentary by China's greatest military leaders through the centuries.

"The Art of War" should be read by anyone who studies military history or strategy, and is part of the curriculum of many of the world's military academies. Studying the teachings of Sun Tzu can help you to form strategies for conflict resolution or negotiating in business, political or social endeavors through a greater understanding of human interaction.

5 out of 5 stars Sun Tzu and Sun Pin are timeless.......2001-06-18

The Art of War is the oldest and best military treatise this world has seen. It is amazing how Sun Tzu can talk about strategy and warfare in thirteen short chapters. His book is just the best about competition and strategy. And now we get to Sun Pin, the military strategist. I have awesome respect for him. He was betrayed and mutilated by his best friend, and still, he survived. He defeated his nemesis in a great strategic way that Sun Tzu would have mostly likely done. These two are the best and if they were in this world today, they would won every war that we fight, by their ability to adapt. If you want to get Ancient Strategy and Chinese Culture, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-06-04

The publishing of both Sun Tzu's and Sun Pin's works together makes for a valuable purchase. I've found that this translation is also quite easy to follow, and the comments assist with interpretation. These works represent awesome insights into the nature of warfare.

1 out of 5 stars suffering.......2001-04-20

The text does not remotely fill the entire page to lengthen the book and suggest a happier price. Sun Pin's addition is severely garbled because the original text was damaged and it's contadictory. The most likely reason that Sun Pin's methods were forgotten and preserved only in a tomb was because (GEE GOLLY) people believed it wasn't worth reading. The commentary uses the word obvious extremely often among various other uneeded lengthening exercises. The author describes himself as an imaginative entrepenuer.(Sun Tzu flirts with perfection)

Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 is the leading software tool for the creation of Web sites and other HTML interfaces. It's remarkably capable, able to deal intelligently with everything from fonts and images to JavaScript for client-side data validation and embedded Java applets. In most cases, Dreamweaver will save you time over hand-coding--and yield better-looking pages to boot. The program's learning curve, though, isn't trivial. That's why Dreamweaver MX 2004: The Missing Manual is worth having on hand as you learn to use Dreamweaver, and worth keeping within reach as you tackle increasingly difficult Web development work.

David McFarland wrote this book, but the influence of esteemed series editor David Pogue is obvious in the careful coverage of features and frequent touches of humor (books about applications can be whangingly dull; the books in Pogue's Missing Manual series consistently manage to avoid this problem while maintaining comprehensiveness). The two men treat Dreamweaver's numerous features (and the even more numerous ways of putting them to use) cleverly, with a combination of procedures and side information that clarifies many oddball situations as well as straightforward conditions. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to create HTML (XHTML and CSS, strictly speaking) documents using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. In addition to the basic stuff (text, images, links, and frames), the book shows you how to build forms for data submission and embed Flash movies and Java applets. There's also a lot of helpful emphasis on Dreamweaver's productivity features, like snippet libraries and file transfer utilities. A special section shows you how to do some server-side work with databases.

    Book Description

Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 offers a rich environment for building professional web sites, with drag-and-drop simplicity, clean HTML code, and dynamic database-driven web site creation tools. It comes with everything except perhaps the most important feature of all: a printed manual. Enter Dreamweaver MX 2004: The Missing Manual, the book that enables both first-time and experienced web designers to bring stunning, interactive web sites to life. What sets this new edition apart is the crystal-clear writing, welcome humor, and exclusive features like these: With over 500 illustrations, a handcrafted index, and the clarity of thought that has made bestsellers of every Missing Manual to date, this edition is the ultimate atlas for Dreamweaver MX 2004.

Fantastic, really simple tutorials and suggested websites for further info. Deals with the basics to get an extemely powerful website online.

There are many more aspects to web design but anyone from the total beginner to intermediate should find this book helpful.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-11-10

Better than Dreamweaver MX 2004 "Training From the Source". This is a step by step book for beginners thru experts. I found it easy to follow and understand. It is also a good reference book for the experienced, which I am not. Why Macromedia could not furnish a book like this with there software I will never understand. The same goes for the new Dreamweaver 8. They want you to buy there product but not show you how to use it. This is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Very good manual.......2006-07-13

So many software books are so confusing and difficult to understand, I really appreciateone that is clear and truly helpful, which this one is.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-03-16

I have read this book cover to cover. You can read it in front of your computer and perform the tutorials or you can simple read an look at the illustrations. Both provide you with a very accurate experience. The online web site allows you to download all of the necessary files to perform your labs if you desire. It is simple, elegant, and well thought out book. You can't walk away from this book and not say that you did not truely learn to use Dreamweaver MX 2004. I admit I'm biased because I've had Dave as a teacher and he's a great one, but his book is like his teaching -- clear, comprehensible, practical and most importantly, funny. Who wouldn't want to work on the National Exasperator pages? His tutorials are excellent, easy to use and fun.
