Book Description

Against a richly woven historical background of two centuries and two vivid societies, Christina Vella unfolds the compelling story of the marital alliance between the Almonester and Pontalba families of Louisiana. Born into wealth in New Orleans in 1795, Micaela Almonester was married into misery in France sixteen years later. Intimate Enemies gives the amazing true account of this resilient woman's life—and the three men who most affected its course: her father, Andrés, an illustrious New Orleans builder in whose footsteps she eventually followed with great distinction; her father-in-law, Xavier, who for more than twenty years tried to destroy her marriage and seize control of her fortune, eventually shooting Micaela in violent despair; and her husband, Célestin, whom, despite all, she compassionately supported until her death. Adapted as an opera in 2003 by the New Orleans Opera, Intimate Enemies has captured the imagination and admiration of readers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars an exhaustively researched work that remains easily readable.......2004-04-01

Vella brings to life with splendid detail the life in New Orleans and Paris in the 1800's. Vella is unquestionably a tireless scholar who has dedicated much time and passion into assimilating an astounding amount of archival materials to bring to life the realities and sensibilities of the different ranks of the aristocracies. Sophisticated, realpolitic, Machiavellian. A wonderful work and a great read. This is how history should be written (for non-academia). Well footnoted & bibliographed.

Intimate Enemies: The Two Worlds of the Baroness de Pontalba, by Christina Vella, is one of the best books that I have ever read. I took Professor Vella's class at Tulane University in the Spring of 2000. This book was the basis of the class. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in thorough documentation of facts about a dynamic woman and her family, as well as two great cities, New Orleans and Paris.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic read.......1999-10-19

This book has been recommended to me by a tour guide while I was paying New Orleans a short visit. I bought it together with Gwendolyn Midlo Hall's excellent "Africans in Louisiana", and, read one after another, starting with Hall, the books give a pretty cool picture of what New Orleans (and Louisiana, for the matter) were about during the 18th century. Although Gwendolyn Hall is by no means a bad writer (on the contrary), Christina Vella definitely is the more compelling read.

Her first few chapters rock, especially the ones about the old Almonester and his fights with the Cabildo, followed by the biography of the old Pontalba. Those are the best chapters of the entire book. Vella did a fantastic job with placing those characters in a broader historical setting. Beautifully written, she doesn't hesitate to give psychological explanations to those men's actions, and does so convincingly. Vella even allows herself to comment ironically on certain developments, or (dis)approve of the actions of her characters, which is pretty rare in modern historical scolarship. (Why?)

The scene then shifts from New Orleans to France, and the story becomes one of a superweird triangle relationship between Micael, Celestin, and Celestin's father, with a pretty dramatic ending. The broader historical perspective shifts accordingly, from the organization of a colonial society to a gender study of early 18th century France. What were the (im)possibilities of a unhappily married woman in this society? Micael, by her extraordinary personality, pushes the boundaries of the possible to the extreme.

The last few chapters of "Intimate enemies", where Christina Vella retraces the building activities of Micael in Paris and New Orleans, are the weakest. The organization of those chapters is sometimes sloppy and unfocused, and although much space is devoted to details regarding the architecture and construction of the Hotel Pontalba and the New Orleans buildings, one senses that Vella doesn't master these themes enough to present them to the reader in a comprehensive fashion. Also, the emphasis on the architecture unfortunately took away some of the focus from the biographical stuff, that in the later years doesn't get less interesting. After having given Micael's father a chapter, her sons would have deserved one as well, especially Celestin Jr. since he became quite an important public figure, but also the other two (How exactly did Micael's sons get in touch with their spouses? How did they relate to Micael after marriage? Why did Gaston remain single his whole life? Was he gay? etc.).

Notwithstanding, this book was a pleasant and thoughtprovoking journey. I'm recommending it to all my friends.

5 out of 5 stars A book in which 19th century New Orleans comes alive!.......1999-04-20

Growing up in New Orleans, I was always familiar with the name Pontalba and the row apartments flanking Jackson Square that bore the name. Pontalba, Almanester, de la Ronde, Miro, Pere Antoine: these were names that every student in New Orleans schools learn. Yet, now I feel as if I know each of them on a personal basis, as if I have actually met them. In the process, I have come to know the city of New Orleans in th 19th century, the same city which I have always known and loved in the 20th. Christina Vella brings to life people who have been dead and gone for over a hundred years. Only through the meticulous research that she has done can these ghosts be brought back to life. Vella has done a superb job in this endeavor. With her vivid descriptions of the city in mind, you can walk through the French Quarter today and literally see the muddy, murky streets of the previous century. You can see the ships on the river carrying the young bride and bridegroom to France. You can see the beloved cathedral as it looked back then. Read Intimate Enemies to learn about the people Vella is describing, but read it also to learn about the city which was their home, about the country that became their nation. Vella has done exactly what every historian strives to do: to bring the past to life in such a way that it is understood and therefore clearly explains why things are the way they are today.

Setting: Scotland, 1177

Sensuality: 7

Beautiful Scotswoman Lauren MacRae first met the Englishman Arion du Morgan as a child, when he saved her life. Years later, they meet again as adults when she repays the debt by saving his life during battle with a common enemy, the Vikings. Their families have always been fierce enemies, each claiming ownership of the Isle of Shot. As leader of Clan MacRae, Lauren risks the anger of her clan when she accepts Arion's proposal to join forces in a desperate attempt to save the island from being conquered by the Northmen. The uneasy alliance forces them into each other's company, and Lauren and Arion find themselves falling in love. There are huge obstacles, however, for Lauren is promised to another, and her sense of honor and duty to her clan and absent fiancé compel her to deny her feelings for Arion. Their sacrifices may be for naught, for someone Lauren trusts schemes to betray her, and both she and Arion may die if they don't find a way to meld the forces of Scot and English against the powerful traitor.

This is an intense novel with a heroic hero willing to give his life and all he owns for the love of one woman. What's unusual is that Shana Abé has created a heroine who matches the hero not only in honor and inner strength, but also in her power and control as leader of her clan. The setting of a wild, unsophisticated island off the coast of Scotland is vivid, the secondary characters interesting, and the villain chilling in his betrayal. Intimate Enemies is classic historical romance at its best. --Lois Faye Dyer

Book Description

From Shana Abé, author of The Truelove Bride and A Kiss at Midnight, comes this exquisitely emotional, beautifully written novel about two warring clans on a Scottish isle united by a fragile pact... and the hearts of two unforgettable lovers.

Lauren MacRae is only a woman. But her father's death has left her the leader of the Clan MacRae. Now it is up to her to defend her beloved Isle of Shot from the invading Northmen, even if it means going to her clan's sworn enemy, the powerful English overlord, Arion du Morgan, for help. But Arion's raven hair, green eyes, and smoldering sensuality soon make Lauren forget just why she turned to him—as he awakens within her a wayward desire....

Like Lauren, Arion risks the mutiny of his soldiers by forming this risky alliance. But he was brought up to believe that the Isle of Shot belongs not to the Clan MacRae, but to England—and he will defend it to his dying breath. Once, when they were children, Arion saved Lauren from a tortuous fate. Now, the copper-haired beauty has somehow found a way to banish the emptiness in his soul. And as they join forces to fight for the land they both love, he will risk everything—even his very life—to claim what is his.

3 out of 5 stars Unfortunately I was bored . . . . ........2007-06-16

I give the book 3 stars because the writing is good, the two main characters are interesting, even the villains are okay, but I was terribly bored. I realize Historical Romances are pretty standard by nature, but some hold my interest more than others. While well-written, Intimate Enemies did not hold my interest past the first couple of chapters. Sorry.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-05-09

I really like Shana Abe's new books. I have had hit and miss on her older books. This one I put firmly in the good category. It was an interesting read, but I found the interaction of the characters and the difficulty of the situation a little blase. I am a big fan of Shana Abe's books and think that her writing has matured into an amazing read now.

4 out of 5 stars good pasttime.......2006-12-23

Fun read. I don't like it as much as her later dragon romance novels, but it sweet and interesting.

3 out of 5 stars A good Scot-English romance.........2004-09-02

Shana Abe's "Intimate Enemies" realistically captures the tension between the two leads, a Scottish woman fihgting to save her clan from the Vikings, and an English earl who wants to do right by his people. At first, they have a controlled loathing of each other, but soon, they find that they are falling in love, while they try to keep their tenuous alliance together in spite of stubborness and treachery. The villain is a bit too convineat, as it elimatinates any possible tension between duty to one's clan and following one's heart. The Englishman is an average character; he's trying to undo what his evil uncle did. The woman, Lauren MacRae, is formidable, but a bit confused. She embodies the heroine well, and you find yourself rooting for her, in spite of the contrivedness of her engagement to Murdoch, and the clan's resentment of her trying to lead.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Exciting as well as Romantic.......2002-06-13

Whew! I just finished this book and I think I was holding my breath the last few chapters - it was that exciting and oh soooo romantic.

Beautiful Lauren MacRae was kidnapped as a child and held hostage by the English and it was in a dungeon she would meet the Englishman Arion du Morgan who would save her life. Years later she would return that favor on a battlefield against a new enemy and save his life.

He was now the Earl of Morgan and she the leader of the Clan MacRae. Both of these wonderful people were raised to hate one another but they were intelligent enough to realize they needed the strength of an alliance to fight a more vicious and common enemy. It made sense to form an alliance, but it also forced them into each other's company, finding themselves drawn to one another in spite of the history that taught them to hate and despise one another. Lauren was betrothed since childhood to Payton Murdoch, a powerful laird of Clan Murdoch and she would do her duty to her people for the honor of Clan McRae, even if it meant denying a love she thought never to feel.

This was such an amazing story, there were so many obstacles to overcome between these two people but Ms. Abe writes with such intensity that you can feel the passion drawing them to one another. This is a historical romance, but one that has a tremendous amount of bite and so much action that you will have trouble putting it down. Ms. Abe is definitely on my `buy' list!

Book Description

This book looks at colonialism in its social, political and psychological context. The author suggests that the fundamental character of colonialism is not so much economic or technological domination, but cultural subservience of the indigenous people, and the cultural arrogance of the rulers. Nandy bases his thesis largely on a study of Gandhi and Kipling in colonial India. The book is in two parts: The Psychology of Colonialism: Sex, Age, and Ideology, and part two: The Uncolonized Mind: A Post-colonial View of India and the West.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-05-23

A profound, important and practical book. It makes a distinction between constructive and destructive arguments. And it describes in a very useful way how to structure conflict so it improves a relationship rather than hurts it.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic In Its Field.......2004-09-01

John Gottman, Harville Hendrix, and, for some people, John Gray are the writers that most people tend to think of as experts in the field of relationships. Way before any of them ever thought about writing a book on relationships, George Bach was researching the subject. In 1968, he published some of what he discovered on the subject in The Intimate Enemy. Back then, very few books on the subject of relationships even existed. Today, most bookstores have bookshelf after bookshelf of them, offering all kinds of theories. Few have the practical value of this timeless classic. If you're building a small collection of relationship books, this book a must have. If you're doing research on the subject, this book is a must read. If you're working on creating a better relationship, the exercises and techniques in it are must do. Have fun!

5 out of 5 stars Essential information for preserving relationships........1999-08-04

I read this book many years ago and it totally changed my perspective about the NEED for conflict in a relationship. It pointed out constructive ways to express one's feelings and opinions without becoming destructive and hurtful in the process. The author points out that positive conflict-resolution techniques are essential if relationships are to last in the long term. The concepts not only changed the way I deal with family and friends, but also gave me some excellent techniques for dealing with students, parents and colleagues in my teaching career. I long since misplaced (or loaned out) my copy of this book, but would like to find another.

Book Description

In 1994, an interim government in Rwanda orchestrated one of the world's worst mass crimes: a 100-day extermination campaign that took half a million lives. At the time, Rwanda's genocide went largely unnoticed by the outside world. Today there is growing interest in the Rwandan experience as many discover the horror that took place and seek to understand how and why violence of this character and magnitude could have happened in our time.

Intimate Enemy is a rare entrée into the logic, language, and imagery of Rwanda's violence. The book presents perpetrator testimony along with photographs of Rwandans, both perpetrators and survivors. The images and words are raw and unanalyzed; the reader is left to make sense of the killers and their would-be victims. Intimate Enemy challenges our assumptions about the genocide and about those who perpetrated it. It also prods us to consider how to represent and imagine violence on the scale of Rwanda's.

Robert Lyons and Scott Straus, Intimate Enemy: Images and Voices from the Rwandan Genocide (Zone, 2006)

By now, pretty much every one is aware of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, almost invisible while it was going on but the subject of a great deal of media exposure since. As with all such things, though, there's always another angle from which to approach it. Robert Lyons and Scott Straus find one (two, actually) with Intimate Enemy; show the genocide from the point of view of those who participated (in Lyons' case), or from every point of view there is to be had in Rwanda (in Straus').

After two introductions in which the author and photographer explain their methodologies in collecting the material presented here, we get into the edited transcripts of a number of interviews Lyons did with genocidaires-- those convicted of genocidal behavior who freely confessed to their crimes. Simply put, they're fascinating. Reading them, one has to wonder how much of what's said needs to be taken with how much salt; there's a lot of language that sounds suspiciously like "I was only following orders," but with a dash of "if I hadn't, I'd have been just as dead" added to it. Straus' photographs, presented with no context whatsoever (notes on the photos are presented in a separate section afterwards), are even more intriguing, since he juxtaposes mass murderers with innocent bystanders, judges, victims' families. (Despite what you read in some of the interviews, you won't be able to tell them apart.)

Thought-provoking. Recommended. *** ½

4 out of 5 stars Intimate Enemy, Images and Voices of the Rwandan Genocide.......2006-08-29

This very illuminating book shows us, through the descriptions of participants, what it was like during the Rwanda genocide. Photographic portraits made later show us other participants. Together they make a picture of yet another holocaust.
The analysis of political scientist Scott Straus and the photographs of Robert Lyons exemplify the belief that objectivity is the key to understanding human affairs, social science. With it there is the hope that dispassionate, systematic analysis, like in the physical sciences, will provide understanding of and divergence from the destructive courses of the past. Straus uses the random sample; Lyons the straight-on shot. By striping away context, there is the promise that essences will be revealed. If Straus and Lyons had been able to observe the killings, instead of asking questions third hand, instead of photographing after the fact, would we better understand why people kill people? Terrorist videos with their fixed focus views are the closest we have to being present at horror. Yet when that wildly passionate, unprofessional radio announcer at the crash of the Hindenburg in 1937 says "This is terrible', we understand. But what kind of understanding is that?

Bill Arnold BA political science, MFA photography

5 out of 5 stars deserves a wider audience.......2006-03-08

Not as well known as some of his contemporaries, Robert Lyons deserves a wider audience. Having previously published two other books on Africa, with Intimate Enemy he has published his most mature work. Composed of mostly square format black and white portraits, the book is spare simple and without judgement.. It shows again how the larger forces of history and politics can make the best of people do the worst of things. Not an easy book to look at but well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars The Intimate Enemy: Winning the War Within Yourself.......2001-03-10

Self-development expert Guy Finley and psychologist Ellen Dickstein teamed up to write The Intimate Enemy: Winning the War Within Yourself. Their book is intended for people who are tired of struggling and wish to "sign a peace treaty with life."

Finley and Dickstein explain that "we each have, and operate from, a false nature that is a jumble of our memories, conditioning, and some tempermental qualities." That false self responds to everything that happens to us, and its response is usually negative or defensive. We then find "ourselves caught up in the same kinds of situations again and again, and nothing ever seems to be resolved in a new way."

They call the false self an intimate enemy and say that we are our own worst enemies when it comes to finding true happiness.

Their book devoted to learning how to recognize the intimate enemy and "discover how to rise above our own present psychology."

Our false selves blame events outside ourselves for our unhappiness or see neutral events as threats, with the result that we are contantly battling to control external circumstances. Only when we become aware of the "True Self" within do we learn we are a part of a world of truth and light where all battles are non-existent.

The authors use short stories and examples to show how people misunderstand the world around them. They explain how to become aware of the fallacies the false self continually attempts to foist off as truth, and how to determine what is real and what is deceit. They say that "understanding that we are a multiplicity of selves is critical to recognizing, and ultimately defeating, the intimate enemy."

They emphasize self-study as the primary way of overcoming the false self. Self-study involves rousing ourselves from "psychic slumber" and becoming aware of our thoughts and internal actions. They offer specific tips for achieving greater self-awareness.

The Intimate Enemy is for anyone who wants more from life than a daily battle against unseen enemies.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting concept.......2000-02-17

It is very hard to focus on the now but when I have accomplished it strange things have happened. Once I saw a blue meteor go across the sky and another time I noticed a tiny bird perched on a tree limb staring at me it was a perfectly gorgeous little bird ordinarily I neverr would have seen it.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth shall set you free........1999-10-22

After studying the principles Guy, Ellen and others have shown me for a few years, there is a joy that wells up inside me on a regular basis. The Truth shall set you free, and this particular effort by these two individuals left me with new insights that struck chords deep within me that recognized them as the Truth each time I turned the page. They explain why our outer and inner worlds are filled with so much proverbial darkness and outlines ways individuals can help to move them toward the Light mostly within themselves.

5 out of 5 stars A life-changing book!.......1999-02-10

The Intimate Enemy is a self-help book and more. For those who have been searching for real help in understanding themselves and their lives, this book is what you've been looking for. Written in an easy to understand, step-be-step fashion, you will learn how to detach yourself from what has been preventing you from realizing your potential as a human being. I have read all of Finley's books and have been working with his concepts and exercises for several years. There is no question that applying the principles found in this book can change one's life for the better!

5 out of 5 stars A Most Aweome Book.......1998-11-10

This book is tremendous, it is filled with such practical insight. There are many books out their on the self-help shelves, but this work is not in the same category. Unlike all those other books which only seem to keep you running around like a dog chasing it's tail, this book not only tells you, but shows you how you can be free of any fear or limitation. In fact The Intimate Enemy shows you the only thing that has been holding you back has no more substance than a shadow. Sound unbelievable? IT IS! Don't believe me, test REALITY AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF. I also recomend The Lost Secrets of Prayer (by Guy Finley). I have met Guy Finley in person and I can honestly say he is as Genuine as his books. Enjoy! Cousin Vinnie NY

Book Description

As Israelis and Palestinians negotiate separation and division of their land, Meron Benvenisti, former Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, maintains that any expectations for "peaceful partition" are doomed. In his brave and controversial new book, he raises the possibility of a confederation of Israel/Palestine, the only solution that he feels will bring lasting peace.
The seven million people in the territory between Jordan and the Mediterranean are mutually dependent regarding employment, water, land use, ecology, transportation, and all other spheres of human activity. Each side, Benvenisti says, must accept the reality that two national entities are living within one geopolitical entity--their conflict is intercommunal and will not be resolved by population transfers or land partition.
A geographer and historian by training, a man passionately rooted in his homeland, Benvenisti skillfully conveys the perspective of both Israeli and Palestinian communities. He recognizes the great political and ideological resistance to a confederation, but argues that there are Israeli Jews and Palestinians who can envision an undivided land, where attachment to a common homeland is stronger than militant tribalism and segregation in national ghettos. Acknowledging that equal coexistence between Israeli and Palestinian may yet be an impossible dream, he insists that such a dream deserves a place in the current negotiations.
"Meron Benvenisti is the Middle East expert to whom Middle East experts go for advice . . . the most oft-quoted and oft-damned analyst in Israel."--from the Foreword by Thomas L. Friedman

4 out of 5 stars Interesting!.......2002-03-03

Having read a book by Edward Said, I wanted to read a book written by an Israeli about the Palestinian problem. Surprisingly, the views weren't that much different. I would appreciate comments from others clarifying whether the views of this author are representative of most moderate Israelis.

5 out of 5 stars A great story but...........2002-11-16

This is my current favorite book in the military romance genre.Hats off to Ms. Dees on a fast paced exciting story with great characters. But is it just me or did anyone else note how Tom's rank and name read together? This one small thing irked me and pulled me out of the story a bit. In my mind I had to read it as Major Foley as opposed to Major Folly. Or was this intentional on Ms.Dees part?

She had a life and death decision to make . . .

Air Force Captain Annie O'Donnell found herself involved in a dangerous military mission that required her to fly into a war zone to retrieve an elite group of Special Operations personnel. She is unprepared when a warning signal suddenly goes off signaling that the enemy below had engaged missile lock on her aircraft. To stay put and allow the last team member enough time to access the helicopter would mean certain death for all members involved. She makes the painful decision to put the aircraft into motion and sacrifice the life of the lone soldier who was helplessly suspended underneath her helicopter. Racked with guilt and indecision, she silently prays for his death to be quick and painless. Grimly one of the special operations leaders provides a name to the faceless individual -Major Thomas Folly.

Her touch made him want to continue living . . .

Major Thomas Folly was a prisoner in a dark mass that had consumed his body. The only sensation he was acutely aware of feeling was agonizing pain. Somewhere far away, a soothing voice willed him to live. He knew the soothing hand that caressed his brow must surely belong to an angel. If he willed his eyes to open, would he find that he had died and gone to Heaven?

Watch out SuzAnne Brockmann, be warned Lindsey McKenna, newcomer Cindy Dees is on the block and is already commanding attention. It has been years since I felt such a strong sensation about a new voice in the romance industry. With Cindy Dees military background, she has all the ammunition to write one explosive novel. This new author is not to be missed, I predict she will take the romance genre by a tremendous storm!

5 out of 5 stars Annie and Tom are great together!.......2002-09-27

Cindy Dees, if her first book is any indication, will become a household name where military romances rule. This was a fast paced book that screams for sequels.

I loved Annie and Tom and Tom's team was worthy of getting to know better. Cindy takes us inside this military operation and inside a chopper without leaving us behind with technical talk.

The black moment had me riveted with my heart in my throat.

I'll put this book on my keeper shelf and put Cindy Dees on my auto buy.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER ALL STAR KEEPER!.......2002-09-19

Fantastic story from start to finish! What a way to begin a writing career.

Helicopter pilot Annie O'Donnell made a split-second decision that put a life at risk or endangered her whole crew and passengers.

I could feel the hits the hanging body was taking as he swung through the trees. Although I wasn't quite clear how she got the assignment of taking care of the wounded and broken Major, I had to applaud her devotedness to helping to save the man.

Major Thomas Folly was badly wounded and just barely alive, trapped in hostile territory with his men and needed a way out.
His men, Dutch, Doc, Tex, Mac and Howdy showed up to check on him like illusions of shadows until he, Hoss was out of the hospital and into further recuperation.

My only complaint is why do the ladies, and I use the term loosely, have to be such tramps. Does all it takes is a guy to just look at them and they let themselves be seduced? Isn't there one woman out there with enough guts to bring a man to his knees without giving in until he has definitely commited his very soul to her. Why preview the marriage bed? Boring, everyone is doing it.

Will definitely be looking forward to her next book and hope the woman will have more self-confidence and enough humor to put the guy in his place until she decides to let him marry her.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --M - This is one book you will want to keep!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2002-09-10

I read this book in 4 hours. My eyes were moving at the speed of light soaking up the story of Helicopter pilot Annie O'Donnell and Special Forces Major Tom Folly. This book is full of action from start to finish. The author has drawn on her own experiences in the military to give this book a well developed sense of realism. If her first book is this good I will be anxiously waiting for her next book. Way to go Cindy Dees!
