Written for children.......2002-04-16
...The problem is that this books seems like it was written for high school students. The first chapter opens with a self-diagnosis: "I clarify the group's goals and ensure that the goals are formulated so members 'sink or swim' together and are committed to achieve them." Or how about, "I advocate my views and challenge the views of others in order to create high-quality and creative decions."
It never gets better. On page 231, for example, in the chapter "Using Power," the authors state, "Even though we sometimes do not like to admit it, power is a basic aspect of social life. It can be seized or given up, increased or lost. It can be used for good, evil, or trivial purposes. All relationships -- with family, friends, lovers, co-workers -- involve power and influence. Yet many person are unaware of the influence they exert on others, and many people are unaware of how necessary and constructive mutual influence is in building effective groups and collaborative relationships among members. Being skillful in influencing other group members and taking responsibility for such influences are important parts of being a member of a group."
Ya think?
The book goes on to identify "the process by which group members mobilize their power in order to accomplish their goals..." Each "action item" is followed by a paragraph of fluff just in case the heading isn't clear enough (not included here):
1. Determining Your Goals.
2. Assessing Your Relevant Resources.
3. Determining Your Needed Coalitions.
4. Negotiating a Mutual Support Agreement.
5. Implementing the Contracts.
I was really disappointed with this book because I was hoping for a book that analyzed the psychology of group behavior and offered practical rules based on that analysis. This book, however, is just too shallow to accomplish that. I imagine it was written for undergraduates, but I would think that even a sophmore would feel insulted.
Joining Together is a Great Resource.......2000-02-20
I read this book as an assignment in a university sociology course. It is a great resouce to have on hand if you work with teams or are intersted in organizational/group behavior. Some of the activities have been used in my "Effective Social Relations" class and we found them not only fun, but educational. I have not read the 1999 edition, but am hoping to get it for a graduation present this April!

Mitchell Lee Marks and Philip H. Mirvis, who separately and together have worked on more than 50 major corporate "marriages," offer a useful distillation of the myriad lessons they've learned about this vital and increasingly common business activity in Joining Forces: Making One Plus One Equal Three in Mergers, Acquisitions, and Alliances. By examining their own projects, along with various other winners and losers, they've identified a number of specifics that can help ensure that such combinations ultimately succeed. Included are details on preparation, managing transition, minimizing stress, and developing an entirely new culture.
Book Description
If 750f all mergers fail, what makes the 25ucceed?
Mergers, acquisitions, and strategic alliances are all the rage in today's business world. Large corporations as well as small, entrepreneurial companies are discovering significant strategic advantage when they merge or align business processes. Joining Forces is a guide to making these combinations successful.
From pre-merger planning to post-merger alignment, Mitchell Marks covers the three key components of a successful transition: hardware (organizational structure), software (policies and processes), and people.

A Good Read!.......2001-04-17
Many mergers, acquisitions and alliances fail due to lack of preparation before, lack of care during, or lack of focus after the deal. Joining Forces is a sober, to-the-point manual directed at business leaders who want to provoke successful combinations, as well as managers and employees who have to deal with the burdens, both mental and physical, of combinations. For the past decade, corporate America has embraced M&A - often with mixed results - and the consolidation pace seems to be accelerating. But too few people inside and outside of the companies involved understand what the combination process means or how it should be handled. Organizations must be willing to focus on the psychological impacts of a combination on their employees. Joining Forces provides a rough sketch of how this can be accomplished - minus any unnecessary strategic details or legalese. We [...] recommend this book to executives, managers and employees at every level - all of whom probably will have to face the realities of corporate consolidation some day.
Clear, concise and on target!.......2000-12-06
In 1998, Marks/Mirvis and Clemente/Greenspan set the M&A world on its head with two very different yet equally groundbreaking books. The former pair's pioneering guide focused on preparing for the transition, team building, and identifying psychological barriers, while the latter duo revealed the secrets behind successfully combining cultures, strategies and processes in their timeless classic-- Winning at M&A. I've read them both many times -before, -during and -after each of my firm's acquisitions, and while new copy-cats and rip-offs continue to be published, no books as effectively walk the reader through the problems, their detailed solutions, and most importantly -- the real-life examples that offer step-by-step guidance on how to succeed. Deals fail all the time and these authors explain why and what they've done to turn failure into success. After each read, the information is still fresh, relevant and insightful. Virtually every other book on the subject is either fluff, history, or a cheap imitation. This is the real deal.
The Real World of Mergers.......2000-03-30
Marks and Mirvis are veterans of the merger battlefield and report the action extremely well. The book is filled with examples and approaches to resolving some of the most common problems encountered when two firms integrate. The other plus about the book is its heavy emphasis on the people and cultural issues that so often get ignored in most corporate combinations.
Insights into mergers and aligning business processes........1999-03-06
Discusses the strategic advantages of companies merging or aligning business processes. The authors provide guidelines for making these arrangements successful. The book covers factors driving combination activity and delves into the details of the process, from initial planning and cultural due diligence to the integration of structures, policies, and practices. The authors also give guidelines on assisting in the subtle, delicate process of psychological adjustment. Recommended.
Book Description
One of the most important yet difficult skills for children with autism to learn is effective social interaction. Reaching Out, Joining In introduces social skills programs to parents of preschool- and kindergarten-aged children diagnosed with one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), including Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and PDD: Not Otherwise Specified.
Reaching Out, Joining In is based on the authors' decades of clinical experience using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a proven educational method, to teach social skills at home and school. This book focuses on four broad topics: Play skills; The language of social skills; Understanding another person's perspective; Functioning in an inclusive classroom.
Reaching Out, Joining In helps parents work with their child's strengths to improve social skills. Following the suggestions and exercises in this book, parents can teach children to: pretend-play, use toys appropriately, know when to use conventional responses like "excuse me," tell jokes, recognize that others' feelings and thoughts are different from their own, and initiate social interaction with peers.
Included are tips for using games, modeling, rewards, role play, videos, activity schedules, and social stories to teach social skills and make the learning experience fun for parents and children. A case study of one family's efforts and successes provides a real-life example that's informative and reassuring. Appendices listing resources such as books, games, and activities give parents additional material to explore.
Parents, teachers, and therapists will find Reaching Out, Joining In an excellent primer to help children with autism become better adjusted socially at home and school. Use this book in conjunction with other Woodbine House titles such as Right from the Start to understand how to use ABA and Activity Schedules for Children with Autism as a teaching tool.

Well written, just not what I was looking for........2002-04-30
My son is on the higher end of the spectrum with at least some rudimentary play skills. This book didn't hold my attention, because I couldn't get through the first few chapters. Having some functional use of toys, I grew tired of explanations of how to get my son how to push a car or roll a ball. GREAT if your kid is at a lower point on the spectrum and needs that level of instruction. There may be areas of interest for higher functioning individuals... I just didn't get there!
Systematic approach to help with social skill building.......2002-03-22
Two expert behavior analysts have produced a very fine work that should be a fixture on every behavioral programmer's shelf. Written in a style that will be easily understood by professional and layperson alike, Weiss and Harris systematically lay out considerations and plans for helping students diagnosed with autistic-spectrum disorders to develop social skills and move towards mainstream activities. The task can seem daunting. Where do you begin to help students to develop social skills? Begin with this book.
Book Description
If the Democratic party wants to learn how to court the evangelical community, they'd do well to learn from Tony Hall. As a Congressman, Tony Hall was reluctant to wear his faith on his sleeve. But during a prayer meeting on Capitol Hill one day a friend asked him, "Tony, don't you think it's time you brought God into your workplace?" He knew his friend was right. If he was to be true to the faith he professed, he must find a way to bring God into the political world in which he worked.
He found the answer to this dilemma in one of the most awful places he's ever visited-Ethiopia. He realized, as he watched a doctor combing the crowds of starving Africans looking for a half-dozen whose lives he could save, that he would travel among the hungry and bring their needs to the attention of his colleagues in Washington. He even took the step of going on a much-publicized 22-day fast to call for attention to these issues.
Years later, and after traveling to more than 100 countries, Tony Hall has seen it all. He's seen desperation, honor, starvation, redemption, and hope. He's seen the dramatic stories of people around the world who are willing to make their lives count. From the dark corners of a political prison in Romania to the barren landscape of famine-stricken Africa, people are suffering and we can help.

A Compelling Vision About What Really Matters.......2006-08-08
Living in the Washington DC area, we rarely hear about men like Tony Hall and Frank Wolf--members of opposing parties who have spent decades working together to address poverty, hunger and oppression. Sadly, this doesn't happen often enough. Reading this book, however, gave me hope that people of different viewpoints really might be able to come together around these vital issues.
This book is easy to read but hard to forget...I highly recommend it.
Anecdotes by Hall provide great example for everyone.......2006-06-12
The scenes described by Tony Hall, and his actions taken during the various events, provide compelling examples of relevant moral leadership in today's political arena.
His advice to the Democratic party should be heeded by any politician in either party who truly wants to make a difference; it is sage advice, applicable to anyone wanting to live purposefully.
High marks for this book, for its author and for those who read it.
A life changing read.......2006-06-01
Don't read this slender hardcover, CHANGING THE FACE OF HUNGER, unless you are ready to change your life.
In 1984, Tony Hall (a congressman for almost 24 years) went to Ethiopia to help ferry supplies to a camp run by the World Vision Christian relief organization. What he experienced changed his life.
Imagine doctors who must work in an area fenced in by barbed wire because of the press of Ethiopians outside desperately trying to thrust their children into the hands of anyone who can help save them from starvation.
Imagine that these thousands of severely malnourished people are suffering from dehydration, dysentery, malaria, cholera and tuberculosis.
Imagine doctors trying to pick the six or seven children they can save each day.
Imagine that everywhere you go to try and help, there is perpetual civil war. You are a moving target and frequently have to dive out of your vehicle to avoid being killed by gunfire.
Imagine that this is not the worst.
Imagine after seeing this, you drive to where tens of thousands of Ethiopians are waiting in the blazing sun, hoping for food. All are malnourished. Most are close to death. Many are nearly naked because they have no clothes. Imagine that 25 children die before your eyes in the next few hours.
Imagine seeing children who are dying alone. Their parents are already dead.
This is not a book for the faint of heart. I was in tears by the second page. But then, perhaps it is a book for the faint of heart...and for all of us. Perhaps it is time that we let ourselves be moved by the terrible facts of hunger and injustice.
But we don't know what to do. We aren't even aware of the people who need our help. We could make a difference if we did as Mother Teresa admonished Hall: "Do the thing that is in front of you."
"I'm writing this book to put these things in front of you," says Hall.
This is a book about how people --- Democrats and Republicans, Southerners and Midwesterners, Jews and Christians, Roman Catholics and Evangelicals, liberals and conservatives, men and women --- can change the world. "I will work with anyone who shares a common goal with me," writes Hall. With this in mind, this strong man of faith has traveled to more than 100 countries, bringing the needs of the hungry, the persecuted, and the suffering to the attention of those who can help.
In his book, you'll see what difference love and focused attention can make to severely mentally disabled children, the outcasts, the terminally ill, unwed pregnant women, AIDS patients, orphans, the lepers, the polio victims, and the dying. You'll see how small business loans can change the face of poverty and give people hope and dignity. You'll see how corrupt regimes hold countries in bondage and must be courageously confronted.
It's all about starting to care about the people around us, Hall says. Do you know your next-door neighbor? Has someone just lost a loved one? What are the needs right in your community? What are the needs of the people on your street? Making a difference begins right where we live. "If you scratch the surface a little bit, you'll find something you can do."
Hall's enthusiasm is infectious. He is compelling as he writes about his personal 22-day fast that raised consciousness about hunger. "...If you let him, God will use you. No matter how small the work or large the work, if you want to be used, you will be. That's how God works. He works through people." And, as Hall quotes Mahatma Gandhi, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." This book is a good place to start.
Best Nonfiction Book of 2006.......2006-05-08
Tony P. Hall is one of those rarest of creatures, a true humanitarian who used his positions (a Congressman from Ohio and Ambassador to the U.N) of power and influence to aid the world's poor and hungry. Changing the Face of Hunger inspires us to action to address modern day's greatest injustice, that too many of the world's peoples will die unnecessarily as a result of hunger and disease. Tony Hall's call for us to follow the example of Mother Teresa and "do what's in front of us" in combating life's injustices is today's clarion calling. Read this book and change the world.

Wonderful advice and information.......2007-08-09
This book is full of great advice and tips on everything from cultural and religious wedding tradition to how to deal with conflict in your family. I also loved all the personal stories about specific couples. This is a must have book for anyone planning an interfaith or intercultural wedding.
Consider your expectations before ordering.......2007-06-27
I'm an interfaith minister and perform about 100 weddings per year. When I saw the title, "Joining Hands and Hearts: Interfaith, Intercultural Wedding Celebrations..." I thought it would have some good reference information and practical perspectives for my ministry.
As it turns out, this is one of those books that seem to be popular today that encourages couples to conceive and write their own wedding ceremony and then find a celebrant to perform it according to their instructions.
In the real world, at least the one I know, there are very few wedding officiants who work this way. Yes, of course we try to elicit the couple's thoughts and preferences and prepare a ceremony to suit their beliefs, backgrounds and personalities. But the only celebrants I know who will simply step up and read the couple's text are the ones who are just going through the motions, for a fee.
Most of this book focuses on walking the couple through an examination of all their thoughts, feelings, and life experiences; discussing possible implications; and then planning the content of their ceremony-- none of it being done with any guidance or input from a professional (except the writer).
It has a lot of pages, and occasionally raises a good point for consideration. But I think any member of the clergy should have learned all this long ago, and a bridal couple should be doing their planning with the person they've selected to perform their ceremony, so they can benefit from the knowledge base and practical expertise.
Sound piece of mind.......2007-02-14
I seriously encourage any couple of either mixed faith, culture, heritage, or any couple seeking guidance for their wedding to purchase this book. Rev. Susanna has put together a wonderful book that will put a stressed brides mind at ease. She gives you ways to deal with the stresses both large and small of your wedding. My Fiance and I are of mixed race, faith, and culture so we knew going into this wedding there would be challenges but not to the extent we have seen. Once I recieved this book I couldn't stop reading it. There are stories of both happy and sad times surrounding a wedding. I am at a better state of calmness after reading this book and want to thank Rev. Susanna for creating this book for brides like me needing help.
A wonderful guide to interfaith unions.......2005-10-26
Since we are based in the UK, I wasn't at first sure how useful this book would be to the European context but it has been a truly uplifting and empowering book, offering guidance on how to turn an interfaith wedding into what it is: a celebration of love that knows no religious or cultural boundaries. Susannah Macomb shows a good understanding of the sensitive nature of interfaith relationships, such as difficulties in articulating and managing our own and our families' expectations. The book deals with the often difficult realities of interfaith relationship while being optimistic and encouraging. By giving specific examples of how to integrate different cultural aspects into a wedding ceremony it is both a practical guide as well as spiritually nurturing.
great book from a great person.......2005-06-16
Rev. Macomb's book is a must not only for those who are planning interfaith or intercutltural weddings. I'd say it's a must for ANYONE who is planning a wedding b/c it is laden with wisdom, knowledge, and real compassion and emotion. There is a multitude of beautiful readings that are pertinent to various parts of a ceremony, as well as a treasure-trove of tid-bits and historical facts about so many cultures. Most importantly, the book keeps things in perspective: why you are getting married, why it is important, and what it means. The book is well organized and well written, and has an honest and spiritual voice that is both calm and soothing.
We were lucky enough to have Rev. Susanna conduct our ceremony--she is a genuine and kind person who really loves and cares about what she does, and if you can't have her actually marry you, then this book is the next best thing!

what??.......2007-01-09
Very excited to start this book BUT just did not understand what the writer was trying to tell me. I was disappointed that it didn't deliver any message to me.
Great Business by 'The Book".......2006-09-10
This is a great book for anyone who aspires to succeed in sales or in business and do it with a solid Christian Worldview.
Superb Book For Anyone in Sales!!!.......2005-03-22
Pink has written what I believe to be one of the best books ever on how to excel in sales. While he writes from a clearly Christian perspective, anyone with any sense of moral values will benefit from the book.
Pink's writing style is concise, clear, and lacks the "preachy" content of some of the Chrisian books I have read. Indeed, he writes with humility and freely shares the failures he has learned from.
Among the points covered in the book include:
1. Preparation is key for preparing a territory strategy.
2. 4 rules of building rapport with your customers.
3. Excellent notes on giving respect to your customers.
4. 5 ways to build trust and 7 ways to build a climate of trust with your customers.
5. Tips on asking good questions and listening to your customers.
6. 8 kinds of questions to ask to uncover a customer's pain and addressing their pain.
7. How to address objections.
8. 31 ways to successfully negotiate win-win situations.
9. Using Noah and the Ark as a means of living strategically.
10. 9 ways to boost your self-confidence and using words wisely.
Pink does his part to try to restore credibility and honor to a profession that unfortunately has somewhat of a negative image (and some of it is deserved!). And yes, a Christian can be successful in sales without compromising his or her relationship with Jesus Christ!
Read the book for practical strategies and also biblical insights into the selling profession.
Highly recommended. Read and enjoy!
Powerful!!!.......2003-09-15
This is the book that helps me put my newfound career in sales in proper perspective, His Perspective. I am by profession an early childhood teacher who is now also a consultant for a cosmetic co. I just could not figure out how sales which is generally looked unfavorably on by my family could be as honorable as teaching. Used to getting a paycheck for services from my employer, I was so uncomfortable handling money directly from the consumer. Also with a negative view and understanding of the profession as a whole, I also couldn't see sales fitting into Our Father's Plans for my life, His Kingdom and for His Good in world.( Now I have the potential to give more $$$ to charities and missionaries for His Purposes than I ever could on $16,000 a year). Pink's writing style is so down-to earth and non-preachy that if you are christian or not it shouldn't matter. If you want to be a salesperson from a point of honor, character and intergrity this book will guide you.

Book Description
The impossible people who make life’s journey so difficult are everywhere—at the office, in restaurants, on airplanes, living next door, members of your own family. They’re . . .
• your “nothing is ever good enough” boss
• the “no price is ever low enough” client
• the next-door neighbor who redefines the meaning of paranoia
• the maître d’ who looks through you as if you don’t exist
• the father-in-law who you know is always thinking about how much better a life his Janey or Joey would have if only married to someone other than you
Ron Shapiro and Mark Jankowski give you a simple and highly effective 4-point plan for dealing with all of them and more—N.I.C.E. Their system shows you how to neutralize your emotions so you don’t just react but act purposefully and wisely. It enables you to identify the type of bully, tyrant, or impossible person you’re facing—the situationally difficult (something has happened that turns an otherwise reasonable person into a temporary terror); the strategically difficult (she has empirical evidence that being difficult is a strategy that gets results); or simply difficult (being difficult is his 24/7 M.O.). Then you’ll learn how to shape the outcome by controlling the encounter and, finally, how to get “unstuck” by exploring your options.
Using colorful stories from all walks of life— “He called me the scum of the earth and it went downhill from there,” “First, lock all your vendors in a small room,” and “The boss from hell”—the authors bring their lessons to life, from business life to family life.

If you deal with "difficult" people, you MUST read this book!.......2007-10-04
BULLIES, TYRANTS & IMPOSSIBLE PEOPLE by Ronald M. Shapiro and Mark A.
Jankowski is a book whose title caught my attention . . . when
I then saw the subtitle--HOW TO BEAT THEM WITHOUT JOINING
THEM--I was hooked with the awareness that this something
that I had to read, because I often find myself having to deal
with folks that might well be considered "difficult" only because
I'm trying to be generous here.
The authors, founders of the Shapiro Negotiations Institute,
bring in many examples that can be applied to life, home
and work situations . . . what's best is that these are
real, coming from such diverse fields as sports, politics,
dining out, and personal relationships, to name just a few.
As I was reading, I kept thinking how Shaprio and
Jankowski made difficult situations seem as if they
could all be handled, such as this one example
involving Phil Jackson when he was coaching the
Chicago Bulls:
He recounted in INC. magazine how his players learned that the best
way to overcome someone who is attacking you, emotionally or
otherwise, is to replace the impulse to strike back with the impulse
to become more focused on the game. Jackson recounted that
when the Bulls played the Detroit Pistons in the late 1980s,
Detroit would win because the Pistons were able to incite the Bulls
into fighting back. It was not until the Bulls learned to control
their "strike-back" impulse that they were able to overcome the
Pistons. As Jackson recalled, "Everybody on our team was
slammed around. . . . Players were tackled, tripped, elbowed,
and smacked in the face. But they all laughed it off. The Pistons
didn't know how to respond. We completely disarmed them by not
striking back. At that moment, our players became true champions."
I gained another valuable tidbit of information when I read about how
Shapiro and Jankowski talked about "writing their press release" . . . they
said:
It can be challenging for most of us to come up with solutions
that allow the other side to save face. Because it's hard to step
outside of ourselves and think like the other side. (Hey, they are
the other side. How could they be right?) One technique we
have used to bridge the gap to their foreign territory is the
exercise of "writing the other side's press release." In other words,
as you come up with options they may find attractive, give
yourself the hypothetical assignment of crafting a statement to
the press that explains why the resolution is a "win" for the other
person, as if you are the other person. Forcing yourself to go
through this exercise will ensure that you frame proposals or
options from a point of view that demonstrates benefit to the
other side. It is rare that you will ever be in a situation in which
you are writing a real (not just hypothetical) press release. But
once it did happen to Ron. He did actually write the press release
to announce the other side's "victory" (which, in reality, he had
shaped and defined on behalf of his client). It's a story that
graphically demonstrates why options work and how to employ
them to get out of a maze filled with apparent impasses.
Lastly, I liked the fact that humor was also used throughout
the book, such as in this retelling of a famous anecdote about
executives who worked for the infamous banking baron J. P. Morgan:
Morgan was tyrannical. He demanded endless, thankless work from
his cadre of distinguished, educated, highly skilled business
managers. He was notorious for never complimenting, but always
disparaging their efforts, privately and publicly. But he paid
them huge sums of money. When asked why these men
continued to work for the abusive Morgan, one replied,
"He's got us by our limousines."
I don't know if I'll go quite that far in working with others. . . however,
as a result of reading BULLIES, TYRANTS & IMPOSSIBLE PEOPLE,
I will now go out of my way to recommend it to others--particularly
if they deal with such folks on any sort of regular basis.
How to Handle Bullies.......2007-04-03
I purchased this book because I was having problems in my department. My supervisor, a head counselor and a co worker were giving me a hard time (i.e. hacking my computer, harrassing me, etc.) Thanks to this book, I know how to handle them without stressing out. Many of my friends suggested that I pack up and leave without a fight. I thought that was crazy as I have been on the job for 14 years and the main person who caused all the grief have only been with the company for 3 years. I never had a problem standing my ground as I fight back with the above bullies. This book however, teaches you how to mentally fight back and outlast the bullies.
First the book focuses on identifying the bullies. Then it gives you a plan of action for each "type" of bully once you have identified them. It's premise is working to outsmart the bully versus fighting back which I did and it always ended up back to square one. The book also gives you scenarios and different real life cases (both successful and failures) so that you can know how to incorporate the lessons in your life and learn from the author's failures.
You must realize that you cannot keep running from corporate bullies. My sister does and she has had 15 jobs within the past 6 years. Not only did the bullies win, but her job resume reads like a book and makes her appear to be the trouble maker. Once I finish I am going to loan this book to her. I always tell my friends, just because you run from one bully another bully always surfaces, it may not be at work (and sometimes it will like my sister's corporate bullies) it may be in some other area. People...you cannot keep running from these types all of your life. At one point in time you are going to have to stand and face the music. I'm glad that I did...I ended up getting the raise that I fought for 13 years (my co worker is a brown noser and got one immediately, hence I fought back and the bullying started). Plus, now I have piece of mind knowing that I can handle any BULLY that comes my way. This book is a keeper..keep it in your library to refer back to....now, I have another bully to concur...my car dealership...a long story...but I feel confident I can handle the situation.
A MUST read!!!.......2006-08-29
Being in corporate America, raising a family, holding leadership positions within the community- this book arms you with the tools to take on any challenges within those environments. I suggest it to anyone who finds themselves in a "hot" situation. It's a must read again and again!
Excellent book about dealing with difficult people.......2005-09-13
"Bullies, Tyrants, and Impossible People" is an excellent book about dealing with difficult people. We have all had to deal with person that flies into a rage, tries to use unscrupulous tactics to get their way, or is just plain difficult.
Shapiro and Jankowski present the material in an excellent fashion. Each topic they bring up is followed by an example situation that they have experienced and how the technique they used broke down the techniques of the difficult person. They also give instructions to identify what type of difficult person you are dealing with as well as a step by step formula to put you back in control of the situation.
The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that the techniques are easier said than done. The first and most important step for dealing with negative people is learning to control your emotions which is hard to do when you are being yelled at or taken advantage of.
I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn to deal difficult people. It's easy to read, easy to remember, and gives lots of examples. 5 out of 5 stars.
Let's Negotiate........2005-08-17
We've always heard that if you can't 'beat them' to join them. This book has the opposite approach -- do not join in with these weird troublemakers. These authors started their own management aides with the systematic approach to getting what you want: Neutralize your emotions, Identify type, Control the encounter, Explore options. In fact, they wrote a book called THE POWER OF NICE.
From grade school on, we have been exposed to bullies, usually the bigger, richer and fatter kids who bully the smaller ones on the playground. I know someone who was called "Carrot Head" to make fun of his red hair; he asked me, "What were you called on the playground?" I told him I was not singled out to be called anything. I was active, atlethic for someone so small (a regular little tomboy who could play ball and run with the best of them). However, my boys were sometimes bullied twenty-five years later. The older black kids picked on Jeff because he was so much smarter than they, and almost caused him to be hit by a car when he was trying to get away from them on his bicycle.
Zach was sensitive, so he was of the kind who would join so as not to be bullied, and he excelled in sports (for his size) and earned their support and respect. They thought he was a tough guy and so 'cool' with his swagger -- and he was not ashamed of his musical and artistic talents.
Justin became one of the bullies, as he got in with the bigger boys from the wrong side of the tracks. He blended in and became one of them, abandoning his music and the arts for the juvenile antics which get one in big trouble. He will never be a substantial adult as a result.
Tyrants come in all forms and places, not just bosses. I see some of the bus drivers as tyrants as they rant and rave and take out their frustrations on the riders who are their 'bread and butter;' they know that nothing will be done about it, and they will 'get away' with the verbal abuse. We don't have to be a Hitler to be a tyrant. Even a Sunday School teacher can be a tyrant.
About 'impossible people,' I am the expert -- as I sometimes come across to those who don't agree with me as one of those bad, bad stubborn people who won't back down. They see me as one who is not resistant and will do something about the situation. They don't see me as I talk about their antics and bad attitudes and abusive ways to City Council and KTA meetings. Those people don't see me as an 'impossible' person but a concerned citizen. I sat by a nice woman in Sunday School who said "Oh, I have heard your name; you are political." I replied, "No, I am not a Democrat or Republican; I am just verbal and vocal." I stand up for those who can't and don't know how. Whether or not I shall continue is in God's hands.
You learn in this book that if you don't rule your emotions, they will rule you. Know who you're dealing with or you'll never know how to deal with them. What you don't control often runs amok. Ultimatums without options lead to impasses. Fight, Flight or Focus. There are three different kinds of Difficult: Situationally, strategically and simply. Knowing which you have in front of you at the moment makes all the difference in how to deal with them and what the outcome will be. Whether it can be negotiated or simply ignored.
They also teach us how to turn dead ends into detours, why and how options work, "how to engage the other side in exploring options," and ending without escalating. In the beginning, they tell us a grim fairy tale with a happy ending. They tell us about the 'boss from Hell' but not about the husband or son from hell. They use colorful stories from all walks of life, from the 'scum' of the earth to the rich and famous. The authors bring lessons from business life to family life. That's all, folks!
Product Description
Brynmorgen Press is pleased to announce the publication of a new book by popular author, Tim McCreight. This aptly named book addresses the many ways that jewelers attach one part to another, with chapters on Cold Connections, Hot Connections, and Adhesives. In his characteristic no-nonsense style, McCreight provides useful information through drawings and text, explaining techniques in language that does not require knowledge of the field. This is primarily a technical manual, not a catalog of finished work. The black and white text and drawings provide simplicity and economy.

Excellent reference book.......2007-02-21
"Practical Joining", by Tim McCreight, is an excellent reference book for the metalsmith. He clearly explains a great variety of cold and hot connections plus a bit about adhesives. As always, his writing is clear and explanatory. This book is not meant to teach all the different methods to beginners but it is a good overview of the techniques one might want to further explore.
Practical Joining, practical book!.......2007-01-13
Another excellent text from Mr. McCrieght. The instructions are easily followed, and the illustrations are clear. I would recommend it to any jewelry maker, hobbiest or professional.
Book Description
The second edition of this comprehensive handbook emphasizes the relationship between the assembly methods, the materials, and the plastics manufacturing processes, thus enabling the reader to identify the best design/assembly method for a given application. The book has been completely updated and a new chapter on laser welding of plastics was added. The book describes all principal fastening and joining methods used to assemble plastic parts today - with their particular advantages and disadvantages. Assembly method limitations for a given material and/or a given molding process are discussed in great detail.
This is very much a "how-to" book, offering a wealth of hard-to-find detailed information.

Reference guide for joining of plastics.......2000-12-28
Joining of Plastics authored by Jordan Rotheiser and published by Hanser Gardner Publications, is an outstanding handbook covering everything from Adhesive joining to Welding of plastic components. (Note that there are no joining techniques starting with letter Z!) The author draws upon more than thirty-five years of plastics product design experience to present this encyclopedic coverage of joining techniques most commonly used in the plastics industry. This book not only offers a detailed guide to a novice reader in easy-to-read format, but also a complete reference manual for the experienced designer who occasionally encounters a new or unusual problem.
The author's unique approach to presenting the information is very refreshing and it fulfills its stated purpose of providing a handy desk reference and a design guide. Case in point, chapter one covers rapid guidelines for joining of plastic and efficient use of the handbook. This gives reader a quick overview of all available assembly methods in terms of description of the method, advantages, limitations, applications, and processing considerations. The general guidelines provide the direction for further reference and in-depth exploration of the particular subject. The importance of properly designing the parts to avoid assembly problems, improve efficiency, and reduce assembly time cannot be over emphasized. The chapter on designing for efficient assembly deals with this subject and provides the guidelines for the proper design along with an invaluable product design for assembly check list. A separate chapter for designing parts for disassembly and recycling covers increasing problem of solid waste management and makes important recommendations.
The relationship between the assembly methods, the Materials, and the plastics manufacturing processes is generally neglected in the available references. This book, in two separate chapters Assembly method selection by material and Assembly method selection by process, addresses this important but often overlooked relationship. Some of the individual topics discussed in detail are, adhesive and solvent joining, fasteners and inserts, hinges, variety of welding techniques including hot plate welding, gas welding, and induction/electromagnetic welding. Also, there are separate chapters on press fit, snap fits, spin welding, stacking, and cold forming. One of the most useful features of this book is the discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each assembly method, making the selection process fast and easy. For example, the author succinctly points out that if high levels of molded-in stresses are a huge concern, one may want to avoid insert molding altogether. Chapter 13 on Insert and multi part molding discusses one of the fastest growing injection molding techniques to reduce assembly cost and components, often referred to as multi-component molding. Over forty pages have been devoted to the detailed discussion of Ultrasonic welding, a very popular and widely accepted joining methods.
In order to increase the versatility of the book and meet the goal of providing a ready reference and "how to" on the subject, numerous illustrations, charts, and tables have been depicted through out the book, names, addresses, and phone numbers of suppliers and equipment manufacturers are given along with adequate reference section. In the humble opinion of the reviewer, the readers would benefit even more, if additional actual photographs showing applications, equipment, and case studies were included. Whenever possible, inclusion of the supplier's website and e-mail address, should prove very valuable. Perhaps, the author would accept the suggestions for the future revision.
In the end, this handbook is the original work and no tired revision of an old text. The author has worked very hard to put into one volume much data that some of us have collected from various sources over a period of years and so often is buried in the files. Joining of Plastics is a very useful addition to any plastics engineer's library; however, it is a must for all plastic part designers.

Anyone can do participatory storytelling with this book!.......2007-01-07
I put on a participatory storytelling event at a hospital with the help of the dance, music, and art therapists. The stories are very therapeutic and fun!
A rarity -- creative, original, unique.......2002-07-24
No simple anthology, this. It's a collection of tales, each choreographed with the storyteller's actions. These are participation stories, as they're called by professional storytellers. JOINING IN is dedicated primarily to stories that engage the audience in the telling. You have the stories as well as directions on how to tell them.
Each story contains instructions for illustration and encouraging audience participation. Fran Stallings, for example, whose story is titled "Paper Flower," shares an original tale which she crafted from several different turn-of-the-century collections of Chinese folk and fairy tales. Since she uses mime and crafts paper items as she tells the story, those instructions are included. in a format similar to a television script, along with author's tips for telling.
This is a unique and fascinating book -- dazzling, extraordinary. It's very different from any other book I've seen and every person who loves telling stories will also love this book.
Joining In: an anthology of audience participation stories.........2000-08-07
This is a must for all storytellers who want to move beyond book stories. To get the audience involved in storytelling is an art that calls for more than enthusiasm on the part of both storyteller and audience. This book explains to the storyteller just how to manage this, and gives hope to even the neophyte storyteller, who - like me - had storytelling thrust upon them because they were idiot enough to mention to their librarian that 'I like children'. While not all the stories in the anthology work for me, I have found several that are just perfect for my style of telling. The stories also cross age boundaries, so there is something for everyone. What I appreciated most, however, was the 'and how to tell them' part. Any tip helps, and these are examples from experts!
