5 out of 5 stars Laura's Album; A Remembrance Scrapbook of Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House).......2007-08-17

WOW. The pictures were fantastic!! Makes you want to jump right back into history so that you could meet Laura and her family. Lovely illustrations and the layout was a joy to the eye!! Little House fans....if you cannot get to the museum in the USA...get this book...heck.....get it anyhow.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2007-05-20

There were a few photos here that I hadn't seen elsewhere, but there wasn't really any new information for me, so I was somewhat disappointed. It also seemed to be written for juvenile fans of the Little House books, but I wish someone would remember that Ms. Wilder has ADULT fans, too, and write something for us.

I found this book to be a wonderful, memory filled journey. It is presented in a most thoughtful manner- all sorts of memoriabilia are here. I will encourage my 17 year old daughter to read this, it definately gives a good view into, as Laura's words, "the land of used to be!"

5 out of 5 stars Is it really 5 stars?.......2007-06-15

Why did I give this novel 5 stars? As others have noted, there is more than a trace of soap opera in this saga. And the plot does stretch your credulity; how else to get the members of one family in all the right places during WWII at just the right time? And yet, if WOW and WAR are soap operas, they are very, very, good soap operas. In other words, you keep tuning in, you keep turning the pages, all 2000 of them. I first read these books when I was in the Army in the late 1970s. I took the books with me as I traveled around Europe on leave. I visited London, Paris, Italy, etc. And at night in my hotel room, I'd often find a chapter that described the very city I was visiting. Another reason these books stick in your memory after 30 years was the mini-series. The TV version reinforces the written version. So like other readers have commented, the characters become real after 2000 pages and 30 hours of TV. In fact 2000 pages and 30 hours of TV is more exposure than a lot of REAL people will ever get in their lives. Maybe that's why I find myself comparing a friend's son to Warren Henry, or a good looking blonde to Janice; two people who are totally fictitious. Just the fact that I'm taking the trouble to write a review 27 years after finishing these novels shows how much they stuck in my head. And I note that Herman Wouk is still alive. I can picture him in his rocking chair, passing his days reading reviews of his life's work on Amazon. Well, as others have said, WOW and WAR are America's version of War and Peace. In fact, they're better than War and Peace. Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Wouk opens the door to WWII.......2007-05-23

War and Remembrance and it's prequel Winds of War are eye openers for anyone who is not really familiar with the second world war. Wouk approaches the story in almost exactly the same way he told the story of Israel in The Hope and The Glory twenty years later - through the eyes and experiences of a family in the midst. I think I would have enjoyed it a little more if the similarities weren't so strong.

The story is very readable. For me the main take home was how little can be said about WWII in almost 2000 pages. Wouk gives a sense of many relevant issues, the scope of activities, the political basics, how truly global the war was. He engages you with the Henry family and challenges you, I think, to dig deeper into the war. Wouk opens the door on the Pacific theater, Poland and the Holocaust, Russian and Stalin, American logistic, American perspectives and attitude, FDR, Churchill, the collapse of the British empire, Hitler and the Nazis, lead lease, and Nuremburg to start. He covers none of this in detail (although Hitler does get quite a bit of attention in the second book) but clearly communicates the fact that this LONG story is just part of one family's story. Part of one of millions of stories.

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply the greatest American literature I've ever read........2006-12-24

I've always wondered why this book was so popular, along with its predecessor "The Winds of War". I tend to avoid huge books in excess of 1000 pages, because I've been disappointed in the past by time-wasting tomes.

For that reason, I avoided reading Herman Wouk's epics. Talk about judging a book by its cover, or in this case by its weight... But I finally did start reading these books, and was completely hooked from the first chapter of "The Winds of War". I couldn't wait to see what happened in "War and Remembrance".

I can't imagine following Wouk's suggestion that one can enjoy "War and Remembrance" on its own, without having first read "The Winds of War". Start with the first one. If you don't, you won't know what you're missing later. The characters in the saga are developed in "The Winds of War" such that it breaks your heart when they encounter all of their perils and difficulties in the second book. I've never felt such sadness about the fates of fictional characters the way I did in "War and Remembrance", but I also was exhilarated by their successes and shreds of happiness along the way.

The two minor criticisms I have with "War and Remembrance" in no way detract from the five-star rating I'm giving it. First: The book felt a bit rushed at the end. Even though most of the dangling plot threads were tied up neatly (as neatly as war allows), there were too few pages dedicated to some of the most jaw-droppingly significant events of the entire war, specifically having to do with Japan. And that leads me to criticism number two: The war in the Pacific got comparatively short shrift, as compared to Europe. I would have appreciated it if Wouk would have expounded more on Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Doolittle's raids, etc. The cast of characters would have had to be dramatically expanded to do this, and Wouk probably would have had to write a three-volume set instead of two. (I'm going to read Wouk's classic "The Caine Mutiny" next...that should satisfy my craving here.)

His treatment of the Nazi-fueled cancer in Europe was as gut-wrenching and historically complete as anyone could ask for. The story's been told many times, but it must still be told many more times as history marches on and people forget. The atrocities of the Third Reich are fully documented here, in all their filthy excesses, and it's horrible to see the characters you care about getting drawn into that maelstrom. Sadder still to realize that you're grieving about fictional characters, when so many million _actual_ people were slaughtered in this hell on earth.

Wouk writes from his background...his family emigrated here from Russia, and in the USA Wouk really explored and expounded upon his Jewish roots. Even though he wasn't in the Holocaust, he certainly did his homework. This is an important book for everyone, just for this reason alone: The man's a master storyteller.

Rare is it that you find a book - let alone two! - where you feel educated first and then entertained. "War and Remembrance", along with "The Winds of War", are stories I'll remember for the rest of my life. Shattering, epic, dramatic, and I'm quite confident I'll never encounter such great works again.

I am not Jewish, but I loudly add my voice to the chorus: "Never Again!"

5 out of 5 stars "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance".......2006-11-27

I've noticed that there continues to be an interest in these books, but that there have also been some interesting comments about them on Amazon. So I'll add some thoughts of mine.

These novels, which are really one, extended, story cover World War II from antecedents to conclusion from the American viewpoint. Wouk uses the device of having one set of characters--in this case Naval Officer "Pug" Henry and his family--continually turn up in key situations so as to allow the novel to cover the entire epoch while having a continuous, human-level plot. ("War and Peace", obviously an inspiration to Wouk, is probably the most famous example of this approach.) Without this device the writer is forced to chose between taking a microscopic view of the period, or ending up with a set of connected stories without a unifying, human-level plot, or interrupting the novel with historical asides. The downside of this device is that it relies on a series of improbable events and coincidences to get a key character into each historical situation important to the story. Readers then need to suspend disbelief on this point to enjoy the novel; those that can't are going to be disappointed.

Comments on Amazon suggest that these books are anything from soap operas to the greatest historical novels ever written. Those who consider them soap operas can't suspend disbelief concerning the plot improbabilities. That is a fair reason to not enjoy novels like these, but doesn't really consign them to the level of soap opera. But neither are they among the greatest historical novels ever written. In fact, they aren't even the best novels about World War II that use this plot device; that honor goes to Vasily Grossman's "Life and Fate", which covers the war from the Soviet viewpoint, and is a great novel by a great writer and well worth reading.

At the end of the day, Herman Wouk may be remembered as one of the finest American novelists of the twentieth century, in that his best books were outstanding, if conventional, novels. But he was not a great writer, although he was a very good one. That said, these are two books that deserve to endure and gain new generations of readers. They are well written, keep moving and encourage the reader to keep turning pages, and give a grand overview of the World War II era. If you love history you might prefer learning about the era from nonfiction books by historians and participants. If you are looking for deep characterizations and profound insight into the human experience you should probably read smaller-scale novels that look inward rather than cover the broad sweep of a world-wide conflict. But for a reader looking for a well constructed and well written story that also provides an overview of the conflict that consumed the world in the 1930s and 40s, and set the stage for the geopolitics of the half century to follow, these are wonderful books.

5 out of 5 stars Great writing, history and storytelling.......2006-08-29

As I read this novel, I kept thinking that it should just never end-- just be a continuing story about the aftereffects of WW II
and how the Henry family continued in the following years. But of
course all good things must end at some time- so read this book
after the first- Winds of War- and enjoy it and come back to it and read it again.I am definitely reading more of Herman Wouk's novels!

Marlena de Blasi's life-long love affair with cooking began at age 9 on a beach along the coast of Liguria, Italy. There she met an elderly woman roasting potatoes coated with rosemary, olive oil, and salt over an open fire. "It was then," de Blasi writes, "that I began to understand that the way people eat and drink is more a measure of them than all the other measurements...." In her book, Regional Foods of Northern Italy, de Blasi finds that her adopted homeland is filled with tastes, smells, and textures that evoke far more than great meals--they are the stuff of memory and dreams.

Regional Foods of Northern Italy focuses on 10 "gastronomic regions," areas in which the author has worked, lived, and cooked: Tuscana, Umbria, Romagna, Emilia, Veneto, Lombardia, Piemonte, Val D'Aosta, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Marche. The recipes in this book are, as de Blasi explains, only "interpretations" of these regional cuisines, since it would be nearly impossible to replicate the exact qualities of the local ingredients--the sweet white butter of the Romagnans or the chile peppers of La Marche. Still, wherever it's cooked, Pasta di Alberto Bettini, with its lacing of basalmic vinegar, is a loving expression of its native Emilia, while so simple a meal as olive oil drizzled over bread and eaten with a glass of red wine evokes the ageless hills of Tuscany. Whether you live in Stockholm or San Diego, Marlena de Blasi's fine collection of recipes can transport you--for the length of a meal, at least--on an extraordinary journey through Northern Italy. So Buon viaggio--e Buon appetito!

Book Description

This is a cookbook like no other. It evokes the essence of Northern Italy's traditional foods in a beautifully wrought amalgam of recipe and narrative. It beckons you across the wet stone of Venice's Rialto bridge into a candlelit fifteenth-century cantina. It invites you down a forest road in Umbria, where grappa-fortified fishermen toss trout onto a wood fire and stage a sunset feast. It proffers nearly two hundred recipes from the heart and soul of Italy's North, including:

• Risotto allo Zafferano Milanese • Arista! Arista! •
• Pasta delle Sfogliatrici • Pesce in Saor •
• La Salsiccia alla Moda di Lucrezia Borgia • Fegato alla Veneziana •
• Carbonada d'Enfer Arvier • Pesto di Mandorle e Noci Ferraresi •
• Pollo alla Marengo • Cialzons della Famiglia de Galateo •
• Pagnotta di Patate • Pasta e Fagioli •
• Sogliole in Gratella • Caffe alla Valdostana • Tiramisu •

This remarkable world within a book reflects the honest, authentic tastes of a people for whom food is a cardinal passion. With it in hand, you will perfume your home with the ancient and divine scents of glorious food, calling forth the ineffable essence of this land and its bounty. Let the adventure begin.

3 out of 5 stars A good effort, but too lost in the romance of the place.......2006-05-01

I like the recipes in this book. They give a nice cross-section of Northern Italian cooking, and are picked as much for being interesting as typical. Also, the stories and remniscences are those of a first-rate memoirist. The problem is that the two of them combined together make for a somewhat overly flowery reading.

I struggled with the star rating on this one -- it really is a worthwhile book to have, but it has serious flaws, the most glaring being the deliberate omissions of the regions of Trentino-Alto Adige and Liguria; the author's logic is that Trentino food is largely Austrian and that of Liguria more southern Italian in style, not helping the reader to know northern Italy, but that seems to me to be an overly romantic way of looking at it. I don't really like it when cookbook authors pare down their work for reasons of accessibility or percieved consistency, because the book loses a segment of the whole picture.

It's a pity, really, because it probably is one of the better books for understanding the food of northern Italy. The flowery tone of the book that I do not particularly enjoy actually does appeal to some, and the personal stories do give a context to the book that more technical cookbooks lack. If it was a more expensive book, I probably wouldn't recommend it, but it's a little like the idea of a film reviewer saying "wait for the DVD" -- it's not that pricey, so grab a copy and see what you think. (And I do like the Modenese pancetta-and-egg scramble in the book -- very tasty.)

5 out of 5 stars DESERVES TO BE IN THE KITCHEN OF EVERY SERIOUS COOK.......2000-07-20

As I write this review, the book is out-of-stock. I want to share this book with everyone, so I am hoping that my review will change things around. First of all, the recipes in this book are complex -- but -- there are books that are much more challenging. Haute Mexican and Japanese cuisine are more difficult, the first because it grew out of a class culture where the food was cooked by maids the second because it is so unlike western food. There are things in this book that are exotic, even to Bostonians where "the Italian North End" was made such an imprint on the city. There is a pasta based on yeast raised dough that is wonderful on a winter's night when snow is falling. There are superb chicken dishes and magnificent desserts. This one of only two cookbooks that I have wanted to go through, page by page, recipe by recipe, and cook everything.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good...........2007-05-10

This series is amazing. The first three books were all page turners. I couldn't put them down until I was finished. However, this book is sadly lacking the caliber the other books in the series possessed. The ending was predictable from the beginning, and the outcome was bittersweet.

Some people believe that after Silver is for Secrets, the series should have been over. However, the author didn't really finish the series there. An ending to Stacey Brown's story was required. The attempt to close all the doors left open, though, was unenjoyable. I give the series, overall, a 4 star rating, but this last book is definately not on the same level as the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Red is for Remembrance.......2007-01-16

My teen aged daughter enjoys this book. I bought her the entire series for Christmas 06. She has enjoyed reading this book over and over. Apparently, these are the type of books that young teens are unable to put down until they complete the entire text. I find it inspiring that she has found a series that entices her to read that often. I was also impressed at the length of time it took to receive the product. The only drawback is that it had the title on the exterior of the envelop. Difficult for gift giving if she gets the mail.

These books are amazing.... All of them. Red is for Remembrance left me happy, sad, thankful... What an amazing author. She brought me into Stacey Brown's life and now I feel like I have to continue living it. I hope one day I'll be as good of an author as she is. This series left me speechless.

5 out of 5 stars a great end to a great series.......2006-07-13

Okay so Stacy is dreaming again, only this time no bodily fluids (anyone else disappointed?). In her dream a girl is telling her to help or "he will die." Convinced this will bring her to Jacob, she agrees to help the president at her school whose daughter is having nightmares and is on the brink of being institutionalized.
At the same time a guy named Shell is at a campground in the middle of nowhere with no memory of his past or anything other than the camp. The camp works much like a cult, the leader is all powerful, they are shut out of the outside world and forced to "love" other members. He knows there's something else out there, or should I say someONE else, but he just cant remember.
All of our favorite charactors are back: Amber, Drea, PJ, and Chad, along with some fun new charactors, my favorite being Janie the Christian roomate who is against witchcraft but not sex outside of marriage.

Very nicely written, lots of historical data connected to the food of the region which was entirely new to me. Enjoyable reading and interesting recipes. Since I do like Indian Food, my hope is to try some of the recipes when time allows.

5 out of 5 stars First person history lesson.......2007-07-09

This book is worth its price for the introduction alone. The author recounts political history of India's Kerala state through the many waves of European trade and reveals a larger historical context for European history that is invariably missing from all so-called World History classes taught at U.S. universities. The auther is herself a descendant of the players in the history she recounts.
A worthwhile investment for any Indian American under the age of 45.

It seems, the best cuisine in India is never found in restaurants, but in private homes where treasured recipes are used along with priceless experience and wisdom.
This book is based on the household cooking of Kerala in India and its many vegetarian marvels. The country of India is vast and complex, and Kerala is home to several key spices including the practically universal black pepper. The ancient spice trade caused
Kerala to became a very sought-after destination for millions. With each visitor came new plants and trees in exchange for their treasured spices. In the book, Ramachandran devotes forty pages to the vast number of visiting groups and their contributions the region over many years.
Next is carefully detailed information on their spices, herbs and vegetables, also the importance of rices in their diet. Following these, she explains cooking procedures and unique utensils.
Here are short descriptions of recipes in the book you might wish to try first:
* Varutha Erisseri -- Green Plantains in Toasted Coconut and Cumin Sauce: Basically this is a dish of stewed plantains, chili powder, turmeric powder, freshly grated coconut, vegetable oil and cumin seeds. The sauce is made from oil, mustard seeds, more chili and curry leaves. Served over rice.
* Tomato Pachadi - Tomatoes in a Fresh Coconut and Yogurt Sauce: Tomatoes, turmeric powder, grated coconut, green chilies and yogurt. For a garnish, combine vegetable oil, mustard seed, a fried chili, curry leaves and brown sugar.
* Vishu Kanji - Rice Soup with Coconut Milk: This simple dish is made from two kinds of rice, frozen lima beans and coconut milk.
* Maanga Chammanthi - Fresh Mango Chutney: Combine mangoes, grated coconut and green chilies in a blender.
Grains, Greens and Grated Coconuts is not a book about a cuisine you will cook quickly, for it demands study and practice. However if you are willing to spend time and feel at home with new combinations, you will get closer each time you work with it. Possibilities for some new taste combinations are definitely reachable and offer an exciting prospect!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely reading, and excellent recipes.......2007-05-29

This is a book you can either settle into an armchair with, or prop on the kitchen counter ... but either way, you'll be enthralled both by the very evocative writing and the very well explained recipes.

In the armchair this brought forth pictures of an idyllic time in Kerala, while following the recipes produced yummy food that had my friend from Kerala go "Mmm, mmm, mmm..." from the very first mouthful.

The writing is lyrical without being pretentious or flowery, and I suggest the reader start in the armchair and move on to the kitchen!

5 out of 5 stars Simple and delicious dishes from the South of India.......2007-04-17

This book is a great introduction to the myraid flavors of Southern Indian cuisine - which are simple and sublime.

The book focusses on Kerala and the author provides a fascinating background into the culture and customs of that state, immensely helpful to anyone new to its cuisine. I am from the South of India myself and can vouch for the authenticity and reliability of the recipes.

Ammini's voice is reassuring - introducing vegetables like telinga potatoes, ripe and unripe plaintains and breadfruit or teaching the basics of pillowy appams.

I have tried many of the recipes from the book and they are all keepers.

If you are interested in the culinary history of food of kerala, treat yourself to this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea.......2007-08-16

Having lost my husband recently I was drawn to the idea of Angel Catcher. I purchased three of the journals, one for myself and one for each of our children, who are adults and live away from home.
I plan to purchase the books to give to family and friends who lose a loved one in lieu of flowers or other forms of expressions of sympathy.

I only have one problem with the journal. I am 62 years old and don't see as well as I used to. The print is so small and light in color that I cannot see unless I use a magnifying glass in addition to glasses to see it. I have had others look at it and they have to strain to see the print also. I hope this can be improved in future editions.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who's had a loss.......2007-03-12

this is an excellent book for anyone who has had a loss. I run a support group and highly recommend this book to help work through the hard times experienced through grief.

5 out of 5 stars Cleanse your soul with this journal!.......2005-09-23

One of my friends gave me this journal after the death of my father in 1998. It has helped me "cleanse my soul" of the grief and heartache and pain of losing someone who your world revolves around. It has helped me so much so, that I have purchased large quantities of these journals to give to people as my own personal ministry to them. Somehow the "giving" of these journals makes my father's death a little easier to live with - in fact almost 6 years later - it still does. There are days I just go back to read the things I wrote and am conforted by my progress in healing and hope others I have given them to along the way are as well.

The greatest thing about this journal are the open ended questions and statements for you to fill in with whatever your feeling and thoughts are right then. And it leaves enough room for you to come back later and write more - it gives you a look over time of how you WERE feeling versus how you ARE feeling. The REALNESS of this journal is what draws me to it. Personally though, I hope you never need it.

4 out of 5 stars COMFORTING/SAFE PLACE .......2005-08-22

A few weeks after my mom died, I ordered this book. I reviewed it in the book store and decided it was a fit for my loss and mourning process.

It has been a great source of comfort and relief for me. When I write in the journal, the words just flow and the pages fill; sometimes I continue writing on subsequent pages. Not all of the headings/topics fit the subject or reflection I am writing, but I find a fitting topic and the words flow.

Since her death, this journal has helped me through the entire year to express my inner feelings. At first I would cry a little after competing a segment. Now, it's a comfort and like a friend to go to--a solace away--hidden garden away from the world who doesn't have time or the empathy to hear my inner thoughts (I wouldn't share these thoughts or reflcetions with just anyone). They are private reflections and thougts for the book, my mom, and myself. The results: I am free to live, love, and be myself again.

If I had the time, I could sit and write in this book for hours. I am a believer in journaling and I have written on a professioanl basis.

5 out of 5 stars To help you through your period of mourning.......2005-02-24

A dear friend bought me this book within days of me losing my husband to cancer. We all have different ways of dealing with death, and as a young widow of 33, this book was an important piece in the process of helping me confront my grief.

I would leaf through the book and randomly select a page that matched the way I was feeling on that particular day. I'd pick up a train of thought, a memory, an emotion; and I'd begin to write, and write, and write, until I felt I'd expressed as much as I could, until I'd released tiny pieces of guilt, anger, despair, loneliness. Angel Catcher became a positive vehicle for catharsis; a record of my transition from searing grief and sadness to a place of healing and great peace.

I have since bought this book for friends who have suffered their own losses. For me, it was a compassionate and constructive channel for dealing with bereavement, and I am very grateful for the comfort it brought me.

May the book continue to bring light and hope to others in need.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book!.......2004-07-27

If you lost a loved one in Vietnam then you'll understand the poingnancy, intimacy, loss, and anguish of the writers of these letters found throughout the book. It brings out the grim and stark realization that behind every name on the Wall is a story as told by the families who suffered a loss. The most important thing though is the book is about remembering those men and women who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2002-01-16

Shrapnel In the Heart is a book to be read by everyone no matter what generation they were born in. Shrapnel In The Heart is a book that has letters and rememberances left behind at the Vietnam War Memorial. Some of the letters tell the story about the people behind the letter. The stories are sad, but the courage of the men and women is a true inspiration. The people written about in this book were extrememly young (18, 19, 20) and it seems like they died in vain. But through their letters that were left behind it is easy to see that these young men knew their duty and refused to shirk from it. These men and women are true heroes.

5 out of 5 stars I wish all young people had to read this!.......2000-04-13

I read this book for a college history course and until now have thought very little about war, military, or world politics. Young people today rarely understand or realize what goes with becoming a soldier. This book gives real images of the devastation war brings from the people who lived through the tragedy of losing their loved ones. It opens our eyes to things we just shouldn't close our eyes on.

3 out of 5 stars Do I dare?.......2000-02-09

Do I dare to give this book a less-than-glowing review? I am inclined to do so not because of the power and dignity of the people and the stories in the book--those speak for themselves. It was Palmer (the author) that bothered me. As I was reading the book, I could not help but feel that she was trying to manipulate me, tugging at heartstrings that needed no tug to be moved by these heartfelt stories. I felt a bit patronized by her. A good book (or movie, or whatever), if it moves me, should not make me feel the push; this one did, and it left me feeling the way people usually feel when they were pushed in a direction that they would have gone anyway--irritated.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!.......1998-09-22

If you have any interest at all in the VietNam War you should not miss this book. It puts a face on all those whose names are inscribed on The Wall. Guaranteed to break your heart!

4 out of 5 stars A photo memoir of Anne Franks' life.......2006-09-21

A nice little book about the life of a 16 year old girl killed by the Nazis. Despite the fact that Anne was persecuted and made to live in horrible conditions, she still maintained her humanity. Her killers however lost their humanity. This was a sad tale of a teenage girl living a life she should not have had to live.

I learned a lot from this book. I have scanned her diary, but have not read it completely. This book is a great addition, because it gives you a summary history plus lots of photos on the life of Anne Frank.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource For Learning A bout The Holocaust.......2006-05-12

I am in Sixth Grade and when my teacher started talking about some day in March and when she asked us "does anybody know what today is" only the war-historian in our class knew. It was holocaust remberance day...and I had no idea! We started this book and I started learning all these new things about the holocaust, what it was and how horribile it was. If you have the guts to read a 100% true book about the holocaust, then this is A GREAT BUY! BUY THIS FOR YOURSELF OR AS A TEACHING RESOURCE...IT'S GREAT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Anne Frank the Diary of a Young Girl.......2005-12-20

I rated this book a five because while you read it makes you relize that you are so lucky you weren't born in those very tragic times. It made me think about how easy I, and others have it.I love this book because it teaches me about other peoples lives and how hard it was for them.I also think that it was well written and easy to understand.I'm not positive that you will like this book because of how sad and frightning the tale is, but if you are anything like me you will have your face stuck in a book 'till your done.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Emotion and Nail Biting Suspense All in One.......2003-12-09

It should have been a happy day in Ballyknockanor. Joseph Burke and Kate Donovan were finally getting married. But the rejoicing turned to sorrow when the groom was arrested at the reception for his part in the recent Irish repeal movement. Unknown to Joseph and Kate, this is part of a larger scheme by neighbor Colonel Mahon in an attempt to take over their lands. As he plots and schemes, Kate finds herself in danger. Joseph becomes a further victim of the plot. Will last minute attempts to stop his punishment be successful? Will he and Kate ever be reunited? Can she survive Mahon's plans for her?

The first part of this book was so hard for me to get through, I thought about quitting. I just wasn't sure that I could deal with any more of the character's sadness. But just before I quit, the pace of the story really picked up and I got drawn into these character's lives once again. There are so many fascinating plots levied against them, I had a hard time putting the book down until I reached the satisfying ending. As always, the Thoene's back up their story with wonderful historical research that makes this time period come vividly to life.

With the way this book ended, you can bet it won't be too long before I'm back for the final chapter in these characters's saga. And I'm sure I'll enjoy it just as much as I did this chapter. Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling!!!!!.......2003-02-04

The continuing saga of the Joseph Connor Burke family continues on his wedding day to his love Kate Donovan. What ensues is tragic, as Lord Burke is arrested for treason shortly after saying his vows.
After he is tried and found guilty he is banished to Australia. He boards a hideous prison ship The Hive. Ironically he has been pardoned of all charges but the news is unable to reach him in time.
Kate steps into her new role as Lady Burke and yearns for news about her beloved Joseph.
I was unable to put this book down. The characters feel like real people and not just characters in a book. It is easy to share in their joys and hardships.
I suggest having the sequel "All Rivers to the Sea" on hand so you can continue this compelling story.

5 out of 5 stars Ashes of Remberance.......2002-10-16

This is not only a short review but a request for information. I am in total agreement with the previous reviews I just read giving this series 5 stars. My question is: Is there a book four? If not, I sincerely hope it is in the author's computer awaiting completion soon! Since finishing this book it was left completely open for the sequal which I will continue to look for. Keep up the wonderful writing. and let us know when we can obtain the next in the Galway Chronicles.
Thanks

5 out of 5 stars A tale of adventure at home and at sea........2001-11-26

Looking for adventure? In "Ashes of Remembrance", Bodie and Brock Thoene's story about the lives of Joseph Connor Burke and Kate Donovan take a turn towards adventure. The book starts out with joy, as the long awaited romance between Joseph and Kate culminates into a wedding. But shouts of joy soon turn into tears of sorrow. Immediately after the wedding, Jospeh is arrested and charged with treason. Meanwhile, Colonel Mahon has his eye on Burke's estate, and through his trickery Joseph is sentenced to transportation for life ... to Australia. And our favorite characters all return, including Mad Molly, whose prophetic babbling and busy-bodying again proves to be essential.

Unlike the earlier two novels of "The Galway Chronicles" series, "Ashes of Remembrance" is less political and less theological. But what it lacks in spiritual depth, it makes up for in adventure and excitement. At sea, Joseph faces hardship, cruelty, the elements, and shipwreck. It is somewhat of a pleasant change of pace from the first two novels, and it's an adventure story well told. At home, Kate faces murderers and kidnappers who are willing to resort to any measures to get hold of Burke's land. The brutal suffering perpetrated in the religious struggles of the Irish is not absent, but functions more of a backdrop for the evil personal ambitions of Mahon. But whether at home with Kate or at sea with Joseph, the adventure is non-stop.

The Thoenes are sensitive to the fact that real Christians do experience real suffering. They are not afraid to depict Christians being the victims of real tragedy and betrayal. In fact, this suffering is thematic in this novel. The title "Ashes of Remembrance" originates in the simple wisdom of the nurse Miss Susan, who explains to Kate how trials and sorrows play an important part in one's life, and make you stronger. "Back home they set fire to the canefield before they cut the cane. Burn away the leaves and rubbish so's they can press the cane to make sugar ... Life ain't nuthin' but a canefield. Sorrows burn away the trash. A person finds out what matters and what don't. What's left is the sweetness. Pressed out, boiled down, and purest crystal. One day, Miss Kate, you tastes the sugar and don't remember the ashes no more." (p.87-88) It's profound wisdom. By the end of the novel, we discover that all the sorrows are not yet over, and that we need to read book four to taste the sweetness. The sorrows of "Ashes of Remembrance" may eventually turn to sweetness for Kate and be forgotten, but for the rest of us, this is definitely a tale of adventure worth remembering.
