Horrifying alien usurpers from beyond time and space!.......2007-08-08
I had read this book more than a year ago (this was before I bought it), and my initial hunger was on the Illithids: Brain-eatting super-intellects from the far future. Their society, their behavious, their mindsets. All of which was pretty much mentally fufilled and sated.
Then, when I had finally read the whole book, I devled deeper still. Information of the Aboleths: Enormous, prehistoric slimy monsters who rule the wet recesses of the Underdark with inscrutable complex minds, mentally-crushing psionic powers, and debilitating slime. Beholders: Gluttonous and borderline insane monsters with an affinity to magic, and inbred xenophobic hatred toward all but the individual Beholder. Neogi: Pilfering spiderlike creeps who make their quota through slave labour and trade. The Grell: Intelligent predators from a parallel dimension with great skill in alien alchemy. And the Tsochari (newcomers to the D&D universe): Worm-like body snatchers from another planet with a fanatical intent to spread the word of their giant worm master, Mak-Thuum-Ngatha.
Each Abberation is gone into useful detail for the DM and the player alike. This book also goes into revised monsters from ealier D&D books (like the Beholderkin, the Illithidae and Illithiad, and a revision of the Psurlons), as well as some new, terrifying and maddening beasts (Hound of the Gloom, Half-Farspawn... my fave, Pseudonatural creatures, Shabboath Golems, and the Zeugalak, to name a few). Also some new feats (regular and Aberrant. Aberrant Feats physicall change your character and add some bonuses here and there), and Prestige Classes to fight, or aid the Aberration menace (Abolisher, Keeper of the Cerulean Sign, Fleshwarper, Darkrunner, the Sanctified Mind, and the Topaz Guardian).
For those not afraid to plumb the depths to know things to impress, or simply scare your D&D buddies with some impressive work, DO get this book. I fully recommend it.
Focus in on Aberrations.......2007-08-07
As a DM in an on-going D&D campaign featuring Epic Characters, it can be difficult (to say the least) to challage my group. But this book suceeds by diving into the mysterious creatures that live in the darkest caves of the Underdark. Once you lure your group into the innocuous looking dungeon, slam the door behind them and lead them deeper into the Underdark. Once there, they can be haunted by Aberrations that are the stuff of nightmares. This books goes deep in to the backgrounds of all the favorites, including Illithids, the decendents of the Gith and much more. It will be easy to create a wicked adventure for your group with this book. And it will be fun.
A celebration of aberrations........2007-02-22
This is everything that you wanted to know about Illithiads and all of the really weird races in the Underdark, an excellent source and a fun read. I would have liked to see more about the Mind Flayer/Gith history, but that might be better suited to a tome that focuses on the Githyanki and Githzerai races.
Good solid D&D reference book.......2007-01-28
This book is a must for the DM who is a fan of horror, especially the H.P. Lovecraft type of horror. Treating monsters like Beholders, Aboleths and Mind Flayers in detail gives an imaginative DM literally dozens of adventure hooks. The sample lairs are a great help for those who don't have acres of time as well. I was especially happy to see a few passing references to both Planescape and Spelljammer campaign settings (go Neogi!) giving me hope that one day these will be updated and re-released (any developers reading this I am ready to buy it all...just put it out!).
I will say that it is a very specialized supplement, so if you are a core, no frills DM this might not be for you. You certainly don't need it to run an excellent game. For those of us who revel in the mood of horror as a party stumbles upon the unearthly lair of a Mind Flayer or are captured and come up on the Neogi's slave block, this is the book for you.
Throwing a Little Bit of Light on the Terrors of the Long Night.......2006-04-07
Many aberrations in the D&D games if they have not been more or less blatantly taken from Lovecraft and his Cthulu Mythos they were at least inspired by the same. Most of the chapters are devoted to aberrations that have the intelligence and/or drive to make an attempt at world conquerors like Mind Flayers, Aboleth, the Grell, Neogi and a new thing. Next comes a chapter of secondary critters most of which are related to main chapters. A lot of the monsters are revised from 2nd Edition sources, the Illithiad being one of them. In fact when it comes to Mind Flayers a lot of material from this previous book was used. Fans of the old Monstrous Arcana will recognize material presented in a rather condensed form. SpellJammer fans will find interesting tidbits here as well. If you've gone looking for this book you probably already know what kind of information you are looking for. At least some of your questions will be answered in this tome as well as a lot to think upon. Personally I found this book to be an excellant read and treasure trove of a toolbox for Aberrations.

this is a good story.it begins by telling how Merin Pendragon came to be, by a young lady named lynior whom arthur got pregnant. she is hidden away, and she and arthur never see each other again. It does'nt go into specifics how far ahead that lynior came from so i'm guessing that she is probably a great great great grandmother to merin and his children. Averil, is the eldest, although she is illegitemate, she is very beautiful, and she wishes to marry a powerful lord, but she gets kidnapped, by rhys fitzhugh a young poor bailiif trying to better his situation. Averil and rhys end up falling in love by the end.
Maia is merin's legitemate daughter who falls in love with a man who remains faceless in her dreams. Even after they are married, maia and emrys (maia's husband) have a hard time being together, because emrys's mother is the jealous and immortal lady of the lake. Maia goes through some tests to prove to the lady of the lake that she is worthy off her son.Junia I have not read about yet, but this is an engrossing read from start to finish

I really did enjoy the book, and I liked how it was split into sections for each daughter. The rape scene didnt bother me as much as it bothered other readers, mainly because it is so factual. I rather enjoyed the book. The only thing that I didnt like about the book was that the girls' stories seemed to be cut so short. By the time she got to Junia, it seemed the shortest. I was really wanting to know more about how Averil faired out. I guess I just didnt feel like the closing of each girls story was enough. I think it is a book worth reading though.
Not bad for a romance novel........2004-11-09
When I purchased this book, I had no idea who Beatrice Small was, or what type of book she normally writes. I grabbed it because of the story summary on the cover. The book tells the tale of 3 young women who all descend directly from the bloodline of King Arthur. The girls Averil, Maia, and Junia each have different mothers and the same father. Each is described as unique in appearance and as each of them prepare to marry they face their own unique circumstances. Averil is kidnapped by a young man looking to find a wife with a land dowery; Maia (and here the King Arthur bit came more into play) falls in love with a faceless man in her dreams - refusing all others and chosing to wait for the day he rides through the gates; and Junia who falls in love with a man from a family feuding with the Pendragons for over a century. Each story line is interesting and the book reads fast and keeps your attention. However, despite the lean toward historical fiction - and in the case of Maia, the definate sci-fi tilt to the story, this is definately a romance novel. I must admit that I found the ending a bit sugar coated and some of the love scenes and wording to be more "lonely housewife" than I would have preferred. There is one rape scene that I could have lived without and I was not thrilled that the woman in question continued to "love" the rapist - I think there is no place for any such suggestion in any type of literature, but that's a personal belief - you decide for yourself. If you want a tale about King Arthur - this is NOT it. If you want a decent, enjoyable read - it's not a bad choice. Knowing now that Ms. Small writes romance novels (despite any efforts at an historical twist) I would assume this is the only book of her's I shall read...but it wasn't a bad choice, just a bit predictable perhaps.

Another fabulous read from Beatrice Small. Three daughters, descended from the mystical King Arthur are of a marrigable age. Their father allows them to choose their own husbands (for the most part) for love as well as politcal. The adventures they must go through in order to be married will keep you hooked from daughter to daughter.

I love all kinds of books, and I have been reading romance novels for about 15 years now, and I can honestly say this was one of the worst I have ever read. The writing is so bad, I had to post something. She actually writes at one point that he looks at her "unquestioningly," and then he asks her a question. What is that? And I found a few mistakes in the book which should have been caught in the editing process. Don't waste your time or your money on this book. There are so many other great romance writers out there!

Pia, who is running away from a possible execution, and is physically scarred from a childhood act of betrayal joins the Galaxy Brides. The Galaxy Brides have promised to give her a new face. They remove all traces of the scars and she goes to Qurilixian as one of the brides. Zoran's crystal chooses her and in a simplistic ceremony involving the removing of masks and the crushing of crystals they are wed. Once bonded Zoran will never let her go. Pia feels her husband is the most handsome of the four princes. Zoran is a man who knows what he wants,; and he wants Pia. He is the captain of the guard and used to getting what he wants. When his wife, the one person who should obey him, refuses to, he realizes the fight for his heart's desire will be the toughest. Zoran and Pia's story is full of humor and hot love scenes. It will leave you craving for more. If you liked the Dragon Lords, read the Var Princes series. It is the story of the "enemies" of the Dragon Lords and is just as hot.
Best of the Dragon Princes.......2006-07-09
The four princes of Qurilixian will meet and choose their life mate. Book four is about Prince Zoran "The Commander". His planet is male dominated and they must seek elsewhere for mates...Pia is running away from a possible execution. She is an assassin and ended up killing the Mayor's son. You will fall in love with this prince also. After reading these stories (The Barbarian Prince, The Perfect Prince, The Dark Prince and The Warrior Prince) read the Var series they are great. The great thing about Ms. Pillow is that you get to know and to love many characters and then you start wondering if she is going to make a new story about them. For example, after reading The Warrior Prince and The Savage King (Var King) I wondered if the author is going to making a book about the Var king's heir marrying Zoran's daughter. This last should be very interesting to read "a dragon and a feline."

Very enjoyable book. I have also enjoyed the other books in this series about the Draig who are dragon shapeshifter who rule half the planet and also the series of books about the Var who are cat shapeshifters that rule the other half of the planet. I really like the series on the Var a little bit more and I can't wait for the two new books in that series to come out soon.

If you're looking for a novel that combines erotica with romance and a decent plot, definitely check out "The Perfect Prince" and the rest of the Dragon Lord Series.
I agree with the other reviewer that the story starts off slowly in the first few chapters, but once it gets started, have a cold drink ready, because the love scenes are HOT! I really liked Olek, the hero. He's definitely an ALPHA male all the way, yet the author manages to show him as sweet, sensitive and loving to his would-be-bride. Many authors can't pull off writing alpha-male characters that don't come off like ogres.
Olek is without a doubt the "Perfect" Prince. I actually liked him better than the leading lady, Nadja. She's an inexperienced virgin who's trying to escape her past and is furious when she finds out Olek is royalty.
Also, kudos to whoever did the cover art, I almost didn't buy the book but the "Prince" looked irrestible!!

This book was one of the best in the series. I almost didn't buy this book because one reviewer said the heroine was disgusting and another said this book was just porn. I'm glad I bought this book, Olena the pirate was great, she was very spirited but not cruel and had a very tragic past that explained her pirate occupation. This book was not porn, it has a great story line, with some tastful sex scenes.

Hi everyone I am 15 yrs old and I have to agree with another reviewer when they said this is not romance.
The lead female was disgusting to me. The lead male was handsome, patient, and kind. What he saw in the lead female is beyond me.
He was described as being a dark bronzed prince. She was described as being a pale pirate, what a way to describe the lead female. She took off her hair pin and stuck him in the neck. She drugged him, she teased him (sexually) she went swimming after he told her snakes was in the water, she stabbed herself in the arm, to stay bonded with her
theiving crew, and even tore up her wedding dress. She appeared before his parents, the king and queen bleeding. A reviewer wrote this is a strong female??? There's more but I'm afraid if I go on Amazon won't print my review. If you must read this book I suggest you buy it used. I know everyone has their own taste but I just can't see many people reading this over and over.

I bought this as an e-book because I thought it was a romance novel. The write up sounded interesting - a sci-fi fantasyish kind of romancer. I didn't really look at the cover artwork. If I'd seen the "Prince" holding his personal appendage in plain sight I probably would have figured out that this is really just a porno novel. I guess the author's name - Michelle PILLOW - should have been a clue. I won't be buying anything else from this author. I deleted the file from my computer and if you read the blurb and thought it was a romance novel - don't waste your money. If it was possible I would have given it a 0.

Michelle Pillow has done it again. This is book three of the series and doesn't disappoint. Sexy, fun, and Olena the heroine is to die for--funny, stubborn, strong--everything a woman should be! I love how laid back and easy going Yusef was. If you like your books sexy with just the right amount of subplot to balance but not overwhelm the main relationship (which is the whole reason for reading this wonderful series! the guys are just too darned sexy to believe!) You'll love this book! I can't wait for four!

I liked the book. It had an interesting premise and the characters were interesting. I thought there could have been more done with them. Sex scenes were hot, would have loved more. But it was an enjoyable read. I'm defiantly picking up the rest of the series to see where she takes it.

His planet is male dominated and they must seek elsewhere for mates...Morrigan is a snoopy reporter who signs on with Galaxy Brides to get a undercover story regarding the four princes and their weddings. What she did not bargain for was being mated to Prince Ualan after getting drunk at the bonding ceremony. The story heats up after that...There is also mystery,,,someone wants the new brides dead..
You will fall in love with these characters...The author doesn't tell you much regarding the three other marriages because that will follow in her three other books to the series.

This was a relatively good book, in terms of the FR accessories. Some of the art seemed half-assed (not bad, just rushed), but its the book's content that really shines through here. As a FR Dungeon Master, i had plans to incorporate some evil organizations from what i learned in the Book of Vile Darkness (BUY IT! It's the best D&D book to date), and this book helped a lot.Aside from giving me some solid info on the organizations and characters i had planned on using, it also gave me some ideas for the campaign and quests, among other things. My only big complaint? The PRICE. i didn't get it on Amazon, because i hate waiting for anything (i want everything yesterday, if possible), and it was 24 bucks. Jesus! For a 150-page paperback! Other than that, it's a great book, and a very useful one for FR.

This is one of the FR books you should own. It's excellent, has lots of great prestige classes, depicts major and minor evil organizations in Faêrun, and also describes each organization's most important sites (with site maps and their respective keys, and NPCs). This is really useful, you can insert these sites in any adventure, in any geographical site in the realms, and build an adventure around it. Also, great spells and magic items. You won't regret buying this book, it's simply great!

Wonderfully put together, beautiful maps of the bad guyz' hideouts you can use for anything, the organizations and details on the NPC's can likewise be used with other side treks, etc. I personally look forward to using the Cormanthor Drow Elves and the Cult of the Dragon in my campaign.

Truth be told, you probably have enough information in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting to pass through or conduct simple quests with regard to most of the evil groups of Faerun. All of the organizations in this book are mentioned, with varying detail, in the campaign. They are also described in Forgotten Realms novels, so if you have read a great deal of those, you might not need this accessory.
If you want to get into real detail with the powers of darkness and haven't read that much fiction, then this is the book to have. Even if you have done your homework, there's quite a lot of original material in here. As an example, if you'd like to actually visit the City of Shade, Lord of Darkness contains a wealth of information about how you would describe it. The campaign provides more simple demographics and locations than in-depth detail, so this is most welcome. There are also new encounters, weapons, and spells for the organizations, as well as some pre-made dungeons to explore. Specific points of interest in lands held by the enemy are also noted, as well as details on particular leaders of each order.
In all, every major evil organization is covered, as well as a host of lesser ones. Lords of Darkness has enough info about how they operate and what they look like to give a DM totally unacquainted with the FR setting the capability to correctly portray enemies and guide adventurers through enemy territory.

A Very Good Romance.......2007-04-11
This was my first Connie Mason romance. I happened to enjoy it very much. I love the forced marriage-never met scenario. The switch was very enjoyable and the hero was smart enough to figure it quickly. The nasty uncle becoming acceptable in the end was too much for me, but I definately recommend it.

If you want to already disagree because i gave this book a high rating go ahead and don't even bother reading the rest of the review, I often times wonder if everyone is reading the same book or books especially when everyone complains and say they are tired of reading the same formula and plot they always read about. 88% of these authors use the same formula and plot mostly in these historical romace novels/books such as (pirates, twin switch, captive brides and other plots and formula) while 90% of the heroes in a historical romance novel are always jerks that redeem themself. I always say it might be the same formula and plot and i never get tired of them because to me its how a author puts her twist on it that makes it a good novel which you do have some bad books, but until someone comes up with new formulas and plots i have no problem with the typical formulas and plots, most of the time I think some people try to downplay a book because everyone likes it but thats just my opinion..
I thought it was a good book, YES Dragon was a jerk in the beginning but i think he redeem himself to Rose throughout the rest of the book and thought he should have been more stern with Veronica, Rose she was a hellion and i mean it in a good way she has guts and that fire in her belly that keeps her going and great love scenes and chemistry between Rose and Dragon.. of course has everyone knows its the typical twin switch, I hate you but now I love you kind of book but I thought Connie Mason did a good job on this book, it wasn't a WOW kind of book for me but i thought it was still good enough to give 4 stars..
If you like Connie Mason you'll love this book and know what to expect from her writting style and for the first timers they always try to leave a bad review when reading a Connie Mason novel for the first time no matter how good it is try reading a second one to see how you feel about the author and her writing style and I'm sure you have a favourite author who has written a couple of bad books themself....
My opinion is so strong for this book because its like i always say a bad reivew can really downplay a good book and a good review can really up play a bad book, because of some of the bad reviews for this book I almost didn't read it but i'm glad i change my mind
Hot Medieval.......2005-07-21
This story flew by so fast. A hot & steamy romance you can soak up like a sponge. It didn't overdo the twin thing - or the enemy thing - or even the annoying mistress who was mostly just mentioned in reference. Okay, it was a lot of the typical but extra enjoyable. If you like CM's smooth writing, this one's a must read.
SOMETHING ABOUT IT THAT'S NOT SO ROMANTIC.......2005-03-04
This is the first book that I tried to read by Connie Mason. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the desire to finish this story.
The premise of the book sounds highly entertaining and highly romantic. But in my opinion, there's just something about the description of the male anatomy being described by the word C--O--C--K does not seem so romantic to me. Everytime the hero starts describing how he would like to "ram his engorged c--k into her wet center" well it just conjures up a picture of a rutting bull in my head.
I read quite a few romance books a day. There are some that are just soooo good that I can't put them down. Then there some books that I have to eventually force myself to read, this is definitely one of them.

This book was a competent story, no more. I don't know about other 'romance' readers, but I hate novels which start out with the hero swiving his lewd mistress. Even worse, he goes on to complain he hasn't had a wench for a whole week, and says to the heroine on their wedding night,"If I had had known virgins were like this I would have had one long ago." Talk about crass. He is like a barbarian. Rose is feisty and the only thing that redeems the book. Veronica the mistress is a pain, and Dominic too stupid in his dealings with her. But because he does not care about anyone'ss feelings but his own, he ignores the strife even though he wounds Rose badly in the process. The whole kidnap and rose trapped in her uncles castle was slapstick and silly. The endless background wittering about bad old King John and the Magna Carta was way too dull. When they couple finaly say they are in love with each other, well, most of us could not have cared less. Apart from some varied positions and word you would not use in front of your granny, this book was not in the least sexy. Where is the sensual detail, the smell, taste, feel of falling in love, not just putting up with each other because of proximity?

AN OK MID TO HIGH LEVEL ADVENTURE.......2005-05-25
Lord of the Iron Fortress is a 48 page, soft cover adventure booklet from Wizards of the Coast. It's geared for 15th level or so characters. The very thin plot centers on some forgemasters who have died and they are unable to be risen from the dead. Now why the characters would be concerned about smiths, and why they'd be deserving of being brought back to life is beyond me. But hey...if that's what it takes to get adventuring then so be it. The book uses four different chracters as samples that can be played if you don't have characters of 15th level. Never in over 25 years of playing has anyone ever used the stock characters...what's the point? They are good to use for the DM to see how the actual PC's compare and then tailor the difficulty of the adveture accordingly.
This is a plane-hopping adventure so be prepared to visit the first level of Archeron where the party will travel to the Iron Fortress. If you're not all into plane-hopping, I supposed you could just as easily set this somewhere on your own world whether it's the Forgotten Realms or one of your own creation. At the fortress it becomes a decent, but relatively standard dungeon-crawl from there. There's a couple of new monsters and magic items as well as one new spell. The art is very good as our the maps. Not the most original adventure in the world but a fairly decent way to waste a couple of nights playing.
Nice concept; so-so execution.......2002-02-16
I'll try to summarize:
1) the adventure idea is excellent, full of nice ideas.
2) the opponents are nicely conceived and well built using the 3rd edition rules
3) the maps are small and hard to use, and the staircases connecting the various levels of the fortress don't match.
4) the 'petitioner' forgers lack dramatic flair and interest
5) the fortress seems too mundane, given the fantastic nature of the idea.
Recommended as a source of ideas: I'd keep the concept, the characters, and design my own fortress and petitioner resolution.

Long ago, in the lands of the Little Kingdom, there lived a farmer by the name of Aegidius Ahenobarbus Julius Agricola de Hammo - or in the vulgar form, Farmer Giles of Ham. A no-nonsense man was Farmer Giles, and when someone steps onto his property, he is there to meet him with his blunderbuss. However, when the next person to set foot on his property is a giant, Farmer Giles soon finds himself dealing with kings and knights and legendary swords and, worst of all, dragons!
I have long been familiar with J.R.R. Tolkein's famous books - The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings - but, this cute little book shows that just about everything that he put his hand to he did beautifully! This is a most wonderful little book, one that is sure to entertain any lover of good fantasy literature. I loved this book, and highly recommend it!
Good story by Tolkien.......2006-12-21
A minor work by Tolkien, published in 1947, this small book (a bit larger than a short story, but well shorter than a typical novel) is set in an undetermined time in England (but which looks like the early middle ages, allowing for a number of anachronistic details, and unconnected with the Middle Earth of his most famous works). The hero goes through a series of encounters with mythical creatures and medieval knights, but his simplicity makes him always turn out on top. In that sense, this book has a tone that is remarkably similar with Chretien de Troyes great medieval book Perceval. So, in a way, this might be seen as Tolkien's own (indirect) try at the Arthurian legend.
Entertaining Fairy Tale.......2006-11-24
This is the story of how a farmer (and his dog) defend their farm from ogres and dragons and the like, which propels them reluctantly to fame and riches. Filled with irony, humor, and good morals, (not to mention fairy-tale action) it is a story that shows Tolkien's lighter side.
Farmer Giles of Ham is a fairy tale like story. It is rather short, and LOTR fans will find it lacking a lot of the depth Tolkien usually has. I would recommend it to a younger audience to get kids interested in his greater works. Still, it is pretty entertaining.
Funny Fairy Tale.......2005-09-14
This particular Tolkien's story might not be a classic but it is still a wonderful narration, full of comical characters. It is also accompanied by illustrations that might interest a child more in picking up the book to read. Compared to other Tolkien's writing, this is extremely brief. Tolkien was well-known for his vast imaginations and this yarn of his was another example of his ingenuity. Although the story line is brilliant, the language itself is not as beautiful or as smooth as other Tolkien's literary effort. Nonetheless, it is a humorous tale that brings smiles and laughter throughout all of the few pages.
A marvelous little jem........2005-01-12
This can be appreciated by both children and adults. The story itself, children will delight in. JRRT's bilingual puns will delight the more educated adults. (When the Blacksmith says that the Feast of Sts. Hilarius and Felix was an 'unlucky' day, for example; for those who don't know Latin, 'hilarius' means 'funny' and 'felix' means 'happy.)
Through all the laughter, JRRT does make some serious points. In his definition of 'blunderbuss' (lifted from the OED, of which he was a compiler) it says that a blunderbuss has been 'superceded in civilized countries by more sophisticated firearms.' JRRT immediately points out that, as Farmer Giles' country had not yet been civilized, the blunderbuss was the only kind of gun around, and was fairly rare at that. This is a dig, of course, at those who would access how 'advanced' a society is by its technology, particularly weaponry. The fashion-conscious knights, the learned parson, and the young dragons who thought (and are now sure) that knights are 'mythical' also provide subtle commentary which children will not get, but adults will.
Another major theme is that of the ordinary man, living a quiet, comfortable life, who is forced into an extraordinary situation in which his eyes are opened to a larger world--some of it beautiful, some of it horrible--beyond the borders of his snug, smug little corner of it, and who finds out that he's a lot braver, and a lot cleverer than anyone (including himself!) thinks he is. This is the central theme of 'The Hobbit', and is told in a slighter form here.
One is tempted to speculate that JRRT's experience in WW I may have had something to do with his attraction to this theme, for in that conflict he was a junior infantry officer in the British Army, in which he found himself, and his fellow soldiers, ordinary young Englishmen--mill workers, farmers, schoolteachers, college students, etc.--found themselves doing things that they never would have thought they ever could or would do. Some of them very brave things, some of them very clever things, and many of them horrible things.
