...
The good news is that you and God are in this together. He knew, even before he created you, who you'd marry. And he will continue to give you the tools you need to become the person he's called you to be and to do the work he's created you to do within your current relationship. God would never leave you alone in any situation: "He will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deut 31:6). Even if you married a non-Christian, God's grace is sufficient for you. You cannot dig a hole so deep that it cuts you off from God's provision, care, and life-giving strength....
That's the message I want to communicate: you and God are in this together, and he's beginning your marriage makeover with you. Let him transform you as you seek to move your husband. While you may never achieve the results you have in mind, you can- without question- change the equation of your marriage by remodeling yourself. It begins with understanding, perhaps for the first time, the glory of being a godly woman and acting with the strength of a godly woman who understands she was created in the image of God, forgiven of her sins through the work of Jesus Christ, and gifted and empowered by God's Holy Spirit to live the life God has called her to live...
By courageously facing up to the challenges that every marriage faces, and by letting God change you in the process, something wonderful takes place- the formation of a new woman, fully alive to God, who can take the lessons she learns at home and apply them everywhere else.
'We can't guarantee success in this war, but we can do something better. We can deserve it.'"
Slightly stereotypical, but good.......2007-09-02
Gary Thomas is brave to write a book for wives from a male perspective and he does a fairly good job, in my opinion. There are spots where he makes generalizations and the examples of couples he uses are on the sweet and simple side, but he makes some good points. We are either making a good marriage by degrees or tearing one down by degrees. Our identity is in Christ, not our marital status.
I preferred "Sacred Marriage" over "Sacred Influence" by Thomas, but this one did make a good book for a discussion group of wives in my church.
Spectacular!.......2007-07-24
This is definitely worth reading! I wish every married (or soon to be married) woman would read this. Gary Thomas writes TO women, not just at them or for them. I felt very understood and was excited to alter my behavior during and after reading this.I also learned a ton about men in general...and i've been married for 14 years so i am not "new" at this. I am so encouraged! This isn't 5 easy steps to change your man, but a challenge and call to change yourself...the ONLY one you CAN change. The blessing that comes in your marriage from your personal growth is a bonus! It gives great advise from a man's point of view. Isn't that what we all need since we are so different from men? He is caring and respectful but plain and easy to understand. I hope you enjoy it as much as i have. Since i have read this and Sacred Marriage i have gone on to read Gary's other book The Glorious Pursuit...another winner!
Good book, very helpful; some drawbacks.......2007-06-09
I must first and formost admit that this is was a very difficult book for me to read. The TRUTH presented in it hit home like a tone of bricks! I really appreciate Mr. Thomas's point of view and I really like that this book is written from a man's point of view. I really feel like God has chosen me to do a good work in my husband's life. This book has helped me see how I have not been cooperating with God in being a Godly influence to my husband. Here's the thing: I'm not sure I would recommend this book for women who are being neglected or emotionally/physically abused by their husband. Women in this position are in a very delicate state and need to be built up in God and receive a stronger foundation in Him before being able to take a look at themselves throught the lens of this book. There are elements in this book that may inadvertently reinforce a woman's belief that her mistreatment is her doing and her responsibility. A woman's abuse at the hands of her husband is his choice and his choice ALONE. There are so many woman out there who need to be empowered FIRST, before one is able to pick apart their roles in their abusive relationships. There needs to be a greater awareness of this issue and it needs to be addressed more openly in books that deal with the woman's role in the marriage.
Although there was a chapter on husbands who are unsaved, it was not adequate. This kind of union has different needs from a christian union and I felt that this book did not provide this different perspective.
Another bad taste that was left in my mouth after all this was that in my readings of so many of the Christian lit on marriage (including this one), men seem to not be held accountable for ungodly behavior as much as women. Despite this very valuable point of view from Mr. Thomas, it lacks any kind of idea that men should be held accountable for the mistreatment of their wives.
I gave this book four stars because I feel like despite it's drawbacks it has helped me realize that by honoring my husband I'm really honoring God. It is God who requires me to be a good wife to my husband and that fact is paramount to whatever self-centered feelings I may have toward my marriage and my husband. This book defintely helps you to realize how you can be the wife God wants you to be.

Cute Story.......2006-12-07
Hugh Dulonget has learned he has inherited an earldom from his uncle but it comes with a catch, he must marry his uncle Richard's daughter Willa. Hugh believes he can inherit without being forced into a marriage with his uncle's (.....) daughter, so he tells her he cannot marry a peasant (......) but he will provide for her. He cannot believe how beautiful she is but still he wants to marry a "Lady."
Willa is actually a "Lady". She has been hiding out in a small cabin since childhood because someone wants her dead. She is not Richard's real daughter, but was "willed" to him at childhood. When someone mistakes the cooks daughter for Willa and kills her, he sends her to Eada, an old crone to hide in the cabin. Willa has been told she would marry Hugh and she would happily, but then he rejects her because he fells she is unworthy. Her guardian is a seer and tells Willa not to accept Hugh until he comes back on his hands and knees.
When Hugh learns he can inherit the title but not the wealth and that Willa is a "Lady" he knows he will have a hard time convincing her to marry him. He sets about trying to woo her and convince her he is sorry, it is not until he crawls through the mud to her after an accident, that she finally accepts him. Hugh and Willa go through a few hilarious mishaps, ( a boil on his (....), an accident overdose on her part which makes her throw up in his lap) but they finally consummate their marriage and start to fall in love. It seems that the enemy from Willa's past has found her and several attempts are made on her life. We then start the process of deciding who is the bad guy and who are the true friends. Eada tells them their life can end in tragedy or can go on in happiness if they choose the rights paths and make the right decisions. \
This was a delightful book with just the right amount of humor and sensuality to make it enjoyable. I recommend it.
Another fun read from Lynsay Sands.......2005-11-27
Hugh Dulonget is a formidable knight. Handsome and courageous, he has women falling at his feet. But intimacy is all they want from him, for despite his reputation as a warrior to be reckoned with, he is landless and therefore hasn't had any luck in getting someone to marry him. But it all changes on the death of his uncle, the Earl of Hillcrest. Inheriting the earldom and all its wealth, Hugh relishes the power that comes with it. And then he finds out that it comes at a price. Earl Hugh Dulonget of Hillcrest must marry the lass chosen by his late uncle. And what's worse, Hugh finds out that woman chosen is just a lowly village wench. Well, at least that's what he thought... until he realizes he's just made the biggest mistake of his life by calling Willa a peasant. So the fun begins.
I have read two other books by Lynsay Sands (ALWAYS and THE DEED) and I must say that she has a real knack for creating stories that provide enough entertainment and comedy. Her heroes have just the right touch of arrogance and vulnerability when it comes to women. It was fun reading Hugh grovel to change Willa's mind and accept his marriage proposal. I liked how he tried to take his flamboyant cousin's advice in courtship and how he practically made a fool of himself because of his "ineptness" when it comes to actually wooing the opposite sex. As for Willa, she is smart, funny, naïve in a lot of ways, but never stupid. I enjoyed the part when she's riding in front of Hugh thinking there was something wrong with the saddle because "there appears to be some great hard thing" poking her from behind. Scenes like that are some of the trademark humor I have enjoyed in Lynsay Sands' books.
WHAT SHE WANTS, with its blend of laugh out loud scenes, lovely characters and a bit of history, is another entertaining book from Sands. And, of course, there is also the murder mystery plot that adds a little bit of twist to the story and keep you guessing.
I highly recommend this for a nice, lighthearted read.
A very detailed, but very worth-it book.......2005-04-18
Okay, I'm not one who likes to have to keep track of numerous
characters, and this book challenged me to the limits in that
regard, but that aside, I thought it was a very good read.
I must say, though, that part of the charm for me was yet another
cover with Stefan Andreas Schwarze featured. That man is the Brad Pitt of romance cover models, let me tell you!!!
Anyway, Stefan Schwarze aside, I did enjoy this book very much.
The perserverance of the main character was exlempary. I think he would still be sitting in the rain right now, if not for the
event that changed the course of the book. I must say, Willa got
over Hugh being snotty in the wink of any eye. I would have thought her unhappiness with his attitude would have lasted longer than it did. I must say she is a very forgiving woman.
I will read another Lynsay Sands book again, but for now, I'm
taking a break from them to try out some other authors I think I
might be intrigued by.
Romantic and Fun!.......2005-03-14
This was my first Lynsay Sands book. This was one of the most intertaining romance books that I've ever read. The chemistry between Hugh and Willa was fantastic! They had a lot of passsion and they were just plain fun. The mystery surrounding Willa's birth and name was just as interesting as the romance between Hugh and Willa.
Overall a highly intertaining read.
Sensuality rating 4 out of 5
Excellent!!!.......2004-02-10
Another MRB (Must Read Book)..
Do not miss this one, as Lynsay Sands again manages to hit just the right spot.. Just the perfect touch of humor and romance..

A GREAT CONTEMPORARY WOMAN'S BOOK.......2007-07-04
I have become a big fan of Cathy Kelly's books and have read six of them and enjoyed them all. Her ability to bond women of all ages (from a young aspiring singer, a single businesswoman, a married mother of two, and a widowed woman) all meeting in a small town in Ireland, sharing modern situations that probably everyone can relate to, either in their own life or someone they know. Cathy Kelly can show you that women can make changes in their lives, especially with a good support team!
Move over Maeve Binchy!.......2004-10-19
"What She Wants" is Chick Lit at it's finest. Like Maeve Binchy's books, this will leave you feeling like you just returned from an Irish holiday, and missing all the new friends you made. Even before I had finished it, I ordered another one and sent it to my mother-in-law.
Perfect for a rainy day, with a glass of chardonnay.
Escape to the World of Happy Endings.......2003-07-27
Cathy Kelly is a most enjoyable author to read. Her contemporary stories feature likeable women facing problems we can easily relate to, and the characters grow with a lot of self-motivation and help from dear friends. WHAT SHE WANTS follows this pattern beautifully as readers meet Hope, Sam, Virginia, and Nicole and are intimately drawn into their lives.
Hope is a young mother with two small children and a handsome husband she never feels worthy of. Hope lacks the courage of her convictions and meekly adjusts her life to whatever Matt decides, even when it comes to uprooting her family, quitting her job, and moving to a strange town where she knows no one so that Matt can "find himself" and become the author he has always dreamed of being.
Her single sister Sam is a career-driven executive at a major record company in London. She has an impressive resume, money in the bank, a designer wardrobe, but lots of fears as her fortieth birthday arrives.
Virginia is a widow with three grown sons. The unexpected death of her husband Bill leaves her alone and depressed. She struggles with finding the strength to face each day and becomes a virtual recluse until a chance meeting sets a new life in motion for her.
Nicole is young, beautiful, and talented. When a colleague of Sam's discovers Nicole at a karaoke bar, the possibilities of fame and fortune open up for her. But does she have the ability to leave her mother, grandmother, and little sister behind?
You will enjoy spending time with these four plucky women and the friends and lovers who enter their lives. Follow them as they each confront a personal crisis and find fulfillment in unexpected ways.
A Great Feel-Good Book.......2003-07-19
Open Cathy Kelly's newest novel and you enter a world full of characters you would like living in your neighborhood. They instantly warm the atmosphere around you with fresh cooking aromas, English gardens and pets so adorable you'll ache to cuddle them. Curling up with WHAT SHE WANTS is an ideal way to pass the lazy days of summer. It's a great feel-good book.
Hope Parker has a gorgeous husband, Matt, and two children whom she yearns to spend more time with. But when Matt unilaterally makes the decision to uproot his family and transplant them to Redlion in County Kerry, Hope balks at the idea. He argues that he needs the freedom and atmosphere to write the great novel that is bottled up inside him. Always compliant, Hope bites her lip, smiles and agrees. Writer's block isn't the only problem that faces the couple in Ireland.
Hope's sister Sam lives the life of the high-powered businesswoman in London, pushing herself through a daily grind that constantly assaults her physical and mental well-being. It takes a medical scare and a trip to Redlion to make her step back and see herself as those around her do. A surprising change comes into her attitude and, ultimately, her life. What had at first seemed a pesky new neighbor blossoms into an enchanting new male friend. Their verbal sparring lessens, but there are still rocky roads to travel.
Meanwhile, Nicole --- young, beautiful and talented --- has hopes of becoming the newest pop star. Darius, Sam's business colleague, discovers Nicole at a karaoke bar one night and falls hopelessly in love with her and her husky voice. Nicole, feeling her usual responsibility for her mum and little sis, wrestles with her conscience over her newfound love and freedom. She wants to share any success with all of them.
Widow Virginia Connell, a year out from losing her beloved husband Bill, picks up stakes and moves to Redlion, her goals manifold. She wants to cherish his memory, but without painful everyday reminders. And her three grown children and their families worry about her too much. Being a greater distance away, she hopes, will give her the breathing --- and grieving --- room she longs for. Then along comes Kevin, a Redlion widower, and he and Virginia strike up a friendship. The awkwardness of seeing a member of the opposite sex is quickly apparent to both of them after lengthy, happy marriages. Settling into a rhythm with each other proves challenging.
Mary Kate, founder of the Redlion Macramé Club --- a euphemistically named group organized as an excuse for the ladies to get together and indulge in cocktails and frank talk --- is the voice of reason, dishing out sage advice along with her wild martinis. She is the glue when their lives fall apart.
Cathy Kelly has a Maeve Binchy style about her. There is something so wholesome about WHAT SHE WANTS, yet primly erotic, that it's seductive. Don't try to put it down. Hope, Sam, Virginia, Nicole and the Redlion community will beckon from the pages, drawing you deep into their lives, their problems and their joys.

A great book about a great merchant, his store and his city.......2003-06-20
This is one of my favorite books. The text is clear, descriptive, and mesmerizes the reader with its storytelling. Inside these pages you will find how Marshall Field and his Company set the standard for retailing in Chicago and indeed the country, and also how the City of Chicago itself influenced the store. The histories of the city and the store are intertwined, and the authors do a wonderful job of explaining the uniqueness of this relationship.
You won't regret purchasing this book. I have read it many, many times over the past 15 years or so and I never tire of it!
Book Description
Holly Faith Phillips spoke face to face with three quarters of a million men last year - the first woman ever invited to address each of thirteen Promise Keeper conferences held in major sports arenas and stadiums around the country. But she doesn't just speak; Holly also listens. Sensing her real heart for men, hundreds of guys have sought her personal counsel behind the scenes of this growing men's movement.
In What Does She Want from Me, Anyway? Holly Phillips reports on the questions she's heard men asking about the women in their lives. In responding to their questions, she provides them with practical strategies they can use to strengthen and enrich those relationships. With rare insight and compassion, Holly tells poignant stories of real men and women in pain and confusion and shows how we all can move toward understanding and healing. She also shares candidly about her own marriage and how it almost came to an end after dreams dissolved into disillusionment and love turned to anger and despair. We see how God helped break through the barriers in the Phillips' marriage to enable Holly and her husband, Randy, to begin to rebuild and restore their marriage into the remarkably strong, vital, and life-giving relationship it has become for both of them today.
Through her years of involvement with Promise Keepers, and in her own personal experience, Holly Phillips has seen and learned the need for honest, yet respectful communication between men and women. But how do we achieve such a lofty goal in such a lowly world - where it so often seems like men are from Mars and women are from Venus? By addressing the tough questions real men are asking - not the questions women think they should ask - this book will enable both men and women to sit down and hear and be heard. With love and leadership, Phillips demonstrates the all-important need for mutual respect and provides a blueprint showing us all how that respect can be attained.

Breaks down barriers of misunderstandings........2002-03-20
Although this book is written for men, I chose to read it anyway because of the interesting chapter titles. Being a woman, I understood completely what the author was saying. What I also began to realize is that these are the very things men don't understand about women. Likewise, women usually don't have a clue as to how vastly different a man is from her. Thus the gender wars. It would benefit every man to read this book and get an insight into what makes a woman tick. I can assure you it is right on target. After reading this book, I read one written for women called "Making Sense of the Men in Your Life" by Kevin Leman. Excellent book for covering the other half of the ground. I highly recommend "What does she want from me anyway?" And men... when you show your woman that you are making the effort to better understand her and meet her needs, you can graciously ask her if she would read the other book I mentioned to help her better understand you. You will be glad you did!
