This book is a bible for love making!.......2007-07-15
After reading the book and returning to it's pages for a while, I have been implementing into actions. My girlfriend and I of 6 months finally achieved the elusive explosion that few women achieve and it was in great part aided by the works of Mr. Lenoradi.
If you stick to the attention to detail that is described as well as ensure trust and comfort between you and your lover you will both feel something we all never knew was possible for most women (and the men providing it).
My girlfriend is still in amazement and its been a few days now since we made love. To hear, "I've never felt that before...it was so different..." to know that I got her to that level of pleasure is so fulfilling.
Buy this book today, tell your lover that you want them to feel the way they should. Thank you Tom!
The trick.......2007-01-03
The trick to this book is precarious..........it could be hit and miss on different women...............like mine.............be patient, vary the techniques slightly and see what happens........it can only help.
Very powerful.......2006-11-10
This book is a truely great read, its simply written, short and to the point. Its a very informative read because not only does Tommy discuss what you need to do physically he also outlines how to act in order to allow your woman slip into a level of comfort with you that will heighten the intimacy of the sexual experience no end. Its great.
Great sex book - it's just one technique, but done with love.......2006-11-10
Tommy Leonardi basically discovered the G-spot on his own, by accident. He is apparently a master at stimulating it until women have Earth-shaking, ejaculatory orgasms.
The technique itself is simple and has been described in many other places. What I like about this book is Leonardi's insistence on patience and building connection so that the woman feels comfortable and safe enough to let herself go into an incredibly intense experience over which she has little control.
Unfortunately, Leonardi goes into long stretches of giving specific orders to do one thing or not do another. He makes it sound like a strict protocol instead of a creative sharing.
I bought Secrets of Sensual Lovemaking as research for my next book, Hotter Safer Sex, which is about non-intercourse forms of sex. I'm glad I read it; it taught me a few new things and validated much of what I already knew. I think there's a lot more to Sensual Lovemaking than this book presents, but I also think anybody who reads it will be glad they did.
David Spero RN, author of The Art of Getting Well (Hunter House 2002) and Diabetes: Sugar-coated Crisis - who gets it, who profits, and how to stop it (New Society 2006) both available on Amazon.
Surprising.......2006-06-27
My girlfriend always says everything's fine in bed, but I thought that I'd surprise her with a few new techniques. I've never bought a book like this before, but when I read it I thought it was extremely frank and dealt with the subject matter in a honest and unpretentious way.
When I was reading them I thought a lot of the suggestions sounded pretty simple, though I think my girlfriend was a little too surprised at a few of them when I subtly had a go over the weekend. I suppose I'd have to say perhaps this book is best when read together with a partner, or at least if she knows you've read it, or she might think you're doing something wrong. So, always get permission first, or at least explain what you're about to do, and that could help prevent any misunderstandings. But, at the end of the day, that's ultimately the message behind these books - it's all about communication. And I think that's really all we need, which is to talk more, so now I know more about what she does and doesn't like, and I think we're closer as a result.

A Book That Really Hits the Spot.......2007-09-12
For years, there has been debate over whether the G-spot exists, and if it does, where it is located. I think the debate is over...the G-spot is real, but the problem is too few men know how to find it and use it properly. This book is a good, fundamental guide to locating the spot and using techniques that will bring your partner to the climax of a life time.
I found it ironic, as I read the book, that I had been using the basic technique already described in the book, without knowing it was the G-spot, and had my partner to near ecstasy, but always fell short. It's all in the timing, or continuing even after your arm goes numb...something I now know.
The only downside I found to the book was the step by step directions. That may work for some, but for others a more narrative style might be helpful. If you order the book, remember that it is a how to manual, much like a car repair book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to bring a new level to their lovemaking. In addition, it ought to be required of all young males and females as they are starting their sex lives.
.
A superb sex manual ideal for elevating one's sex life to new heights of passion........2007-07-09
Written by award-winning author Donald L. Hicks, with the aid of correspondence from expert human sexuality researchers, Unleashing Her G-Spot Orgasm: A Step-by-Step Guide to Achieving Ultimate Sexual Ecstasy lives fully up to its title. Chapters address the basics of human sexuality for pleasure, step-by-step techniques to use, types of G-Spot friendly coitus, how to deal with common problems that interfere with sexual pleasure (such as discomfort, "orgasm anxiety", or the urge to urinate), case studies, and more. A superb sex manual ideal for elevating one's sex life to new heights of passion.
Lacks spirit.......2007-05-13
I guess the title says it all, step-by-step. Too mechanistic and simplified. Does not delve deep into the true nature of the beauty of women and orgasm. Like something you'd read in a Mens health magazine or cosmopolitan.
The real deal........2006-09-17
This book is the real deal.
I read and memorized this book.
When I followed it with my girlfriend, it was a complete road map to what to look for before proceeding to the next road post. In our case, each of the things to watch for, and the things to do and avoid doing worked.
This book was life changing for my girlfriend. She has compared the orgasms from the g-spot to taking drugs and she was very happy and spaced out for several days afterwards.
I recommend this book highly. Hell, I wish they taught it to kids the first year in college.
A good book...but a bit dogmatic at times.......2005-12-18
I think the author gives very good basics to pleasuring women with foreplay, g-spot orgasm and female ejaculation orgasm, the good thing is that it is written in a clear simple way and it's easy to follow which is really a good thing!...i think every man who wants to make great love to his woman and give her very pleasurable orgasms should read it...the only thing that i don't understand is that the author stresses too much the fact that you can't touch the vagina because it would finish the "emotional bond" he assumes that all women have an "idealistic emotional" conception of sexuality...and he says even if she wants you to touch her there, but if a woman wants you to touch her there, she is already feeling "an emtional bond"... an other thing that was annoying is that if you start reading the book from the "techniques" part he again assumes that you are not patient and not a good lover by telling you so,it's none of his buisness to juge us like that i have the right to read a book in any order i want!... so to sum up...it's a book with good basics but don't follow absolutely everything absorb the useful information...and use it to fullest on your woman!...
Book Description
Celebrating the 500th anniversary of Michelangelo's David, New American Library releases a special edition of Irving Stone's classic biographical novel-in which both the artist and the man are brought to life in full. A masterpiece in its own right, this novel offers a compelling portrait of Michelangelo's dangerous, impassioned loves, and the God-driven fury from which he wrested the greatest art the world has ever known.
Customer Reviews:
Truely one of the Greatest Men to ever live.......2007-08-18
This is one of the best books ever written. It transports you into the life of one of the greatest men to ever live. Although the book is fairly long and can be difficult to read, the life of Michelangelo Buonarroti is such a fascinating tale that you will never tire of this book. The reader will empathize with Michelangelo's passion for sculpting and the pain of his servitude for various popes and kings. Please forgive the cliche, but this book is "a must read". It is a necessity for as many people as possible to know the life of the man who is responsible for some of the most breathtaking pieces of art in existence.
Fascinating Life of the Artist.......2007-07-05
Irving Stone does an amazing job bringing the Renaissance genius Michelangelo to life. His narrative masterfully weaves in realistic dialogue and anecdotes with meticulously researched historical facts. The result leaves the reader with a much deeper appreciation for the artist's impressive legacy including the Pieta, David, the Sistine Ceiling, and St. Peter's. The stories behind their creation are as interesting as Michelangelo's unique personality. His single minded dedication to his work was sometimes his worst enemy, often leading to unnecessary conflicts with his fickle patrons and ungrateful family.
The tumultuous backdrop of Italy in the Quatrocento and Cinquecento also provides for very interesting and informative insights into the politics and religion of the era, highlighted by Savonarola and the Warrior and Medici Popes.
For readers interested in learning more about Renaissance artists, Giorgio Vasari's contemporary biographies in his masterpiece "Lives of the Artists" comes highly recommended. Irving Stone successfully incorporates several of Vasari's anecdotes in this work.
More agony than ecstasy.......2007-06-19
Irving Stone's epic "biographical novel of Michelangelo" covers the majority of his life (75 years) from age 13 to his death a few weeks shy of his 89th birthday. Sculptor, painter, poet, architect...dissector (one of the more unconventional sections - from page 210), Michelangelo was a man of many talents and few loves besides his primary obsession: sculpture. The book is unarguably well written, but would read better condensed to maybe half of its whopping 750-page length. The use of "sculpture" versus the shortened and more modern "sculpt" as a verb, although grammatically correct, is awkward and the one love scene (page 266) was better left out than in, reading like something straight out of a Harlequin romance novel and adding nothing to the otherwise, mostly romance-free story. Additionally, the inclusion of photos of his works would have improved the reading experience immensely. Stone's comprehensive story, colossal in length as well as scope, is not for the historically or artistically challenged (like this reader) and would probably be better appreciated by those familiar with Italian. Mandatory companion read: Michelangelo, Painter, Sculptor and Architect, with the restored frescoes of the Sistine Chapel (English Version) published by A.T.S. Italia, Rome; better reading: The Second Mrs. Gioconda by E.L. Konigsburg [Da Vinci], lighter: Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier [Vermeer].
INSPIRATIONAL!!!!.......2007-05-24
A truly amazing book that kept me reading hungrilly with every page. Stone captivates the reader with this incredible and inspirational lifestory of Michelangelo, revealing the life events of a man driven with passion. This book has helped me understand myself as an artist, Christian, and human being. I highly recommend this book to any reader, my only regret being that I didn't read it sooner!
Florence, thy name is Michelangelo.......2007-04-27
After spending 3 weeks with Michelangelo, I was really relieved to be finished with this book. Although it was a very enjoyable piece of art history, it often times got bogged down with politics. Stone's incredible detail of Michelangelo's art, the political upheaval in Florence and Rome, and the Vatican's role in his life really made me feel 16th century Italy, but by the end, Stone seemed to rush through the last 2 decades of Michelangelo's life.
The first quarter of the book and the beginning of Michelangelo's career under Lorenzo Medici was a true gem. Michelangelo's self-discovery, love of sculpture, and love of Lorenzo's daughter Contessina felt youthful and fresh, especially his discovery of human anatomy and the scenes of dissection. However, the political intrigue and the battles with the Church in a post-Lorenzo world were cumbersome.
I still highly recommend this book as a great story about Michelangelo as it enhanced my appreciation for his work. Just be prepared to spend a good deal of time trudging through this lengthy tome.

'Requires an active and creative mind to enjoy'.......2007-05-15
'Strike'(AKA Hobart Huson)also created 'THE HIVE' an on-line clandestine chemistry forum which has since been taken off the web (though various archive snapshots such as RHODIUM still exist). This book written by Strike is extremely useful, though it requires an active and creative mind to enjoy the full benefits of this book. Much information is scattered through out this book just waiting for someone to come along and put it all together. Many of the useful tips and hints that Strike gives at the beggining of the book, take on new meaning when combined with the suggestions he gives at the end of the book. An enormous wealth of information is awaiting anyone willing to go though this book and put all the unconnected parts together.
total synthesis 2.......2006-07-10
a very well written book in detail of manufacture of all amphetamines and ectacy but unless you have a chemistry background is have to follow or attempt any of the synthesis described in the book but still a good source of information
not for the common person.......2006-07-04
if you have a chem degree this book is great..but with a degree you don't need the book..way too tech for the above average high school grad
Increased Potency.......2006-06-06
I don't plan to read or buy this book. The VOGEL textbook is the best book for lab technique. It is doubtful that Strike's book talks about enantiomers. MDMA exists as right and left handed enantiomers. Probably only one enantiomer has the biological activity. The other enantiomer is probably just inert filler. Thus, optically pure MDMA would be twice as active as the mixture of right and left handed enantiomers. Buy a book on Resolution procedures.
Plausible, but understated and unsafe.......2006-03-11
Assuming a layperson to chemistry could perform all the steps outlined in this book, they would still put themselves at risk. This book suggests utilizing a variety of corrosive and/or combustible chemicals to produce illegal narcotics. The reactions are understated by the author, and any reader shouldn't assume they will be able to yield a clean product easily, if at all. It suited the needs of my research into the manufacture of methamphetamine, but, legal aspects aside, I wouldn't attempt any of the reactions.

Jack Kornfield, one of America's most beloved teachers of meditation, assures us that enlightenment does occur on the spiritual path but warns that it is not the end of the road. Bringing his thoughts to a personal level, Kornfield looks up many of the notable spiritual teachers of our times (Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Sufi, etc.) and presents extended quotations of their trials and epiphanies. These anecdotes are woven together with fables and ruminations from Kornfield's own decades-long experience as a practitioner and teacher, creating an image of the spiritual life as challenging, multidimensional, rewarding, and, yes, mundane. In the old days in China, Zen monks were encouraged to travel for instruction under a variety of masters. Here, Kornfield introduces us to today's masters, but off their podiums, as equals. Genuine experiences of awakening, despair, fault, serious transgression, and simple childlike joy all appear as bridges on the way to the divine. After the Ecstasy, the Laundry is not just another inspirational bestseller, it is a lasting record of concrete insights forged from the fires of dedicated practice. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
“Enlightenment does exist,” internationally renowned author and meditation master Jack Kornfield assures us. “Unbounded freedom and joy, oneness with the divine ... these experiences are more common than you know, and not far away.”
But even after achieving such realization — after the ecstasy — we are faced with the day-to-day task of translating that freedom into our imperfect lives. We are faced with the laundry.
Drawing on the experiences and insights of leaders and practitioners within the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Sufi traditions, this book offers a uniquely intimate and honest understanding of how the modern spiritual journey unfolds — and how we can prepare our hearts for awakening.
Through moving personal stories and traditional tales, we learn how the enlightened heart navigates the real world of family relationships, emotional pain, earning a living, sickness, loss, and death.
Filled with “the laughter of the wise,” alive with compassion,
After the Ecstasy, the Laundry is a gift to anyone who is seeking peace, wholeness, and inner happiness. It is sure to take its place next to
A Path with Heart as a spiritual classic for our time.

After the guru trip.......2007-05-18
Excellent comments on coming down from the guru trip. Particularly helpful for anyone disillusioned with a guru. Well written, good stories and insights. An easy read.
The Whole Catastrophe.......2007-04-10
Jack Kornfield was trained as a clinical psychologist as well as a Buddhist monk. He is needless to say, a wise man. 'After the Ecstasy, the Laundry' is filled with invitations to embrace what Zorba referred to as "the whole catastrophe." Life. The book is filled with fables, anecdotes, teaching stories, and various other vehicles woven together in a spiritual tapestry culminating in the final chapter entitled 'The Laughter Of The Wise.' This chapter begins with a quote by Long Chen Pa:
Since everything is none other
than exactly as it is
one may well just break out in laughter
Jack Kornfield is a master storyteller. This beautifully written book gently helps us along that earthy and spiritual path that we travel before, during, and after both the ecstasy and the laundry. Read it.
Frustrated with your inner work? This book could help........2007-04-08
I thought this book was excellent because it puts meditation in a practical frame that understands that it is easy to get caught up in life and let your inner work go by the wayside. It is forgiving and encouraging. Easy to read and understand.
Excellent and entertaining stories that illuminate essential spiritual truths.......2006-09-16
I like most of Jack Kornfield's work and this book is no exception. It has a lot of good stories that are very entertaining and each of them illuminates important spiritual truths. The focus of this book is on misconceptions about enlightenment and samdhi experiences. Also, it contains some beautiful accounts of samdhi experiences taken from various religious traditions.
There is a lot of practical wisdom in this book about finding meaning on the spiritual path and in life in general. Jack Kornfield dispels the illusion we are ever a finished product or that our various personality quirks will ever disappear completely. In one section, he quotes Ram Dass who once was asked, did you get rid of all your personality problems and he replied, "no.. but I've become a connoisseur of my neurosis."
In another section, Jack talks about vocation or purpose in life. I found this to be particularly well done and personally meaningful. While the book is good, I think you may get more out of the audio CD because you get to hear the tone of his voice and inflections. I think this carries a part of the communication that doesn't come across in his books.
My favorite taped work by Jack Kornfield is your Buddha Nature. This is on the 10 paramitas (perfections) and I think it represents his most poignant expression of his thinking on life. If you like After the Ecstasy, the Laundry... you may want to consider purchasing this as well.
I liked it.......2006-07-02
I thought it was an okay book. Nothing mind blowing, but I would recommend it if you have time. I liked reading about other people's experiences very much, about finding peace and happiness while meditating or on a retreat somewhere. It made me think of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj saying something along the lines of, "You can spend ten minutes, ten days, or ten years in meditative bliss, but the fact is you always have to come back to daily life, therefore it is useless." This is obviously true and I found it weird that so many advanced spiritual seekers don't see that. Spiritual practice IS daily life. The laundry is the ecstasy.

Consider for a moment that the Dalai Lama is a tantric adept, and those visions of sexual bliss that the word "tantra" conjures up quickly dissolve. Tantra is more than the sex play of popular articles and books. Georg Feuerstein, authority of the yogic traditions, conjures up a much richer world of Hindu cosmology, philosophy, and theology. Tantra is a form of devotionalism, in which ritual sounds, gestures, and actions figure prominently. Reverence of the guru as god also plays a part, but Feuerstein tempers our suspicion by repeating the admonitions of tantric texts down through the ages to choose carefully. As much prudence must also go into reflection on the disciple's own person, who engages in strict yogic discipline designed to conquer the six enemies: desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and envy. Feuerstein draws on the ancient texts to describe the tantric path in great detail, including realization of the subtle body, directing energy through the chakras, and, yes, sex. Taken together, tantra becomes a vivid, multifaceted path to self-realization. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
Tantraâoften associated with Kundalini Yogaâis a fundamental dimension of Hinduism, emphasizing the cultivation of "divine power" (shakti) as a path to infinite bliss. Tantra has been widely misunderstood in the West, however, where its practices are often confused with eroticism and licentious morality. Tantra: The Path of Ecstasy dispels many common misconceptions, providing an accessible introduction to the history, philosophy, and practice of this extraordinary spiritual tradition. The Tantric teachings are geared toward the attainment of enlightenment as well as spiritual power and are present not only in Hinduism but also Jainism and Vajrayana Buddhism. In this book, Georg Feuerstein offers readers a clear understanding of authentic Tantra, as well as appropriate guidance for spiritual practice and the attainment of higher consciousness.

A Foundation to grow from.......2006-06-26
Currently there is a barrage of books cropping up on the subject of Tantra. Many of them either go in the esoteric abstract and boring direction OR they are titallating, sex focused and commercially simple. Feurestein's book is a tremendous exception. It is a solid simple foundation of the esoteric principles in Tantra, shared in a context that is accessible ant practical for the reader. This book has inspired many discussions, ideas and practices on my personal path. Infact, Feurestein was a tremendous muse for my new tantra Novel. Don't Drink the Punch: An Adventure in Tantra. I'm in gratitude for Feuerstein's teachings.
A 'primer' coat of many colors.......2005-01-27
Feuerstein has done the English-speaking world a genuine service with this introduction to Tantra, suited especially to the casual intelligent reader. This is not suited to those interested in an anthropological, historical, or how-to approach (see reviews below for more details); instead, Feuerstein covers the basic topics in a rather plain-vanilla fashion. Feuerstein's first positive task is to dispell certain commercial flapdoodle still current in our fabulously corporate culture about tantra imagined as a kind of low-tech Orgasmatron (thanks, Woody Allen). He then gives a very straightforward (if oversimplified) explication of tantric history and practice germain to both Buddhists and Hindus on topics such as mantra and the guru. (Yes, I'm aware that tantra is both Buddhist and Hindu, and neither Buddhist nor Hindu.) Now, what Feuerstein has accomplished is no mean task. He writes with the detail of of a scholar and the credibility of a practitioner.
One may ask why book-learning is needed in this context, if tantra is a path of energy and relationship. Well, there is a genuine danger, after all, in not knowing what you're talking about:
"Someone with insufficient knowledge resembles a maimed person trying to climb a rock,
Someone who studies scriptures for the sake of becoming a scholar
Is like someone who searches for lethal weapons.
In short, if you do not know your own tradition,
How will you, a blind person lost in the middle of a vast plain, ever find your path?"
(The great tantric master, Padgyal Lingpa.)
As good as anything by Karen Armstrong and maybe better.......2002-02-24
It's often hard to understand metaphysical books about tantra because there are few scholars who can write in a clear way that's accessible even for practitioners, let alone people who have never had a guru or traveled to India to experience tantric teachings firsthand.
In America, yoga has so often devolved into a physical practice with spiritual pretensions, instead of a deeply spiritual practice.
I returned from India from a six-month trip in 1998, during which time I stumbled into meeting a guru and then spent five weeks studying with him in Benares. When I came home, it was very hard to begin to articulate what had taken place. This book was a godsend, a link to connect my experience with a tradition that extends millennia back in time. And secondly it helped to link my friends and family to the experiences I just had by reading a clear description of the path and experiences involved in Tantra.
I hesitate even to use the word Tantra, given that it's so very, very misused in the West.
This book sets the record straight (Tantra does NOT equal sex) and presents the practice and history of Tantra in all its profundity. We are indebted to the author for his great gift to all of us.
For the other reviews that criticize the author's lack of experience in Tantra, you should be aware that the author has a Tantric Buddhist teacher which led him to bring his considerable talents to present the first guide and most helpful explanation of these profoundly important teachings.
I've given numerous copies to family and friends, all of whom have enjoyed it immensely.
Until Karen Armstrong decides to tackle this subject (highly unlikely, given her orientation), this is the best book available. Highest recommendation!
Misses the mark about tantra origins.......2001-02-08
The book does not seem to realise that tantra evolved initially as indigenous to India, especially Bengal, as separate from Vedic influence and was picked up by so-called Hinduism and by Buddhism. However, tantra is still a spiritual science distinct from these religious traditions and distinct from Vedic culture. The Vedic culture took aspects of Tantra because of Vedic deficiencies.
The books is also largely academic giving no insight into personal experience which in a spiritual disciple role is so important to tantra. Tantra is a spiritual science and yet this books still formulates matters by way of considering Vedic, Hindu and Buddhist concepts.
George Feurstein unfortunately may have succumbed to be a popular author but as to actual understanding of tantric meditation techniques, spiritual practices and spiritual science, does not appear up to the mark.
Is his latest book "Yoga for Dummies" any reflection of a new found status?
Important book, yet not complete enough.......2000-07-07
This scholarly, well written and easily accessible book does a great job at dispelling some of the modern myths about tantra as being solely the yoga of sex. Instead, as the reader will find out, tantra is one of the most sophisticated paths to spiritual enlightenment ever conceived and has deeply influenced both Buddhism and Hinduism. However, the book has a few major shortcomings: 1. It is primarily based on scriptural research, not first-hand, practical knowledge of tantra. Since tantra is primarily a spiritual practice and secondarly a philosophy, personal insight--either by the author or others--would have greatly enhanced the book. 2. It is based on research of ancient tantric scriptures while failing to include the revised tantric scriptures of modern sages such as Shrii Shrii Anandamurti (a.k.a. P. R. sarkar), which are much more applicaple to our times. 3. It fails to show that tantra is a distinct spiritual path, or transcendental science, apart from both Hinduism or Buddhism, and with a much longer history than either of these religions. Keeping these shortcomings in mind, I recommend reading this book.

I Don't Believe It.......2007-01-10
I think this book is made up of a bunch of baloney. I don't believe a word of it. I think that way too much importance is placed on sex, to the point of being obsessed with it. It's about a bunch perverts, in my opinion. The author's interest and obsession with sex is not normal. It appears she thinks of nothing else in life, except sex, and who to have it with.
a complete sacred sex course.......2006-04-27
This book is a complete sacred sex course in itself. With lots of meditations, activities, and exercises, it is particularly suited for couples who want to open up to each other emotionally as well as physically.
Extremely, technically thorough.......2005-09-20
Very detailed oriented manual type of book but very informative as well. I recommend if serious about this subject!
Interesting, but be honest about whether this is appropos.......2001-12-27
This is a very interesting book to read. However, be aware that this is not a typical western sex-ed book. It is written from a 'foreign' background, and that is very apparant. The book is big and there is a lot there, not like many sex-ed books. There are scores of exercises. But honestly ask yourself (and your partner) if you are willing or desirous of trying a truly different method. If it's not something you WANT to try, then you might not end up liking this book at all, and so will just be out the purchase price, with no sexual benefits.
So ask yourself whether you want to try a new type of sexual practice, paradigm, or ontology. If you do, then this is an excellent book. If you don't, then it is too truly foreign for you to enjoy or benefit from.
A wonderful wedding gift........2000-07-10
I've given this book as a shower gift or wedding present many times, and the couples always get me aside and tell me how grateful they were for the book. The Art of Sexual Ecstasy is beautifully and elegantly written that you never have that embarrased feeling when sharing it becuase it reads nearly like peotry. The illustrations are lovely and tasteful, and the spiritual aspects are insighful and rich. I found the book to be personally inspirering as well. Thanks :-)

What is music? How and why does it affect us? What is the nature of musical genius? Author/composer Robert Jourdain explores these and other questions, from the essential nature of sound through composition, performance, and, finally, the nature of ecstasy. His prose is eminently readable, offering a very accessible account of a difficult subject to the general reader as well as to the musical sophisticate. This is a fascinating and intriguing book, written by someone who clearly knows his subject.
Book Description
What makes a distant oboe's wail beautiful? Why do some kinds of music lift us to ecstasy, but not others? How can music make sense to an ear and brain evolved for detecting the approaching lion or tracking the unsuspecting gazelle? Lyrically interweaving discoveries from science, psychology, music theory, paleontology, and philosophy, Robert Jourdian brilliantly examines why music speaks to us in ways that words cannot, and why we form such powerful connections to it. In clear, understandable language, Jourdian expertly guides the reader through a continuum of musical experience: sound, tone, melody, harmony, rhythm, composition, performance, listening, understanding--and finally to ecstasy. Along the way, a fascinating cast of characters brings Jourdian's narrative to vivid life: "idiots savants" who absorb whole pieces on a single hearing, composers who hallucinate entire compositions, a psychic who claims to take dictation from long-dead composers, and victims of brain damage who can move only when they hear music. Here is a book that will entertain, inform, and stimulate everyone who loves music--and make them think about their favorite song in startling new ways. What makes a distant oboes wail beautiful? Very Interesting.......2007-09-28
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I especially enjoyed reading about the personality characteristics of the greatest composers. Why did Mendelssohn and Saint-Saens never fully develop the potential they showed early in life while Beethoven's skills in composition improved consistently during his lifetime? For me, this book at least addressed, if not answered, some of the questions I've wondered about for a very long time. A previous reviewer complained the book portrayed snobbery. I guess from a certain viewpoint, someone could feel that way. James Brown said he'd surpassed everyone, Beethoven, Mozart, everyone because he'd written 5,000 songs. With all due respect and acknowledging Mr. Brown's very real talent, there is a bit of a difference there. For hundreds of years, music has been created for purposes of art and has been written also as popular music. Both unquestionably have their place in the world of music. The same could be said of all the arts. Is Australian aboriginal art less important than a Monet? Not if we believe the real purpose of art. I suggest an individual's opinion of this book depends on what they are hoping to take away from it. For me, it was an enjoyable, informative read.
Too Careless.......2007-08-05
I didn't even get to page 100 before deciding that the information in this book couldn't be trusted, and so I'm not going to finish reading it. I do have some expertise in classical music, and the author is just plain wrong in some things he says in that area. After realizing that he not very conscientious in the area which I was knowledgeable, I certainly can't rely on his presentation of facts in the scientific areas that I don't know so well, and that kind of material is the bulk of the book. The writing itself is not very impressive, either. Some of it seems to be trying in a much too calculated way to be "popular". Other of it fails when trying to explain complicated stuff, giving the impression that the author himself was none to clear about the material. And some of the writing is strangely "off", as if he looked up the wrong word in a thesaurus. It's really too bad the book isn't a success, because the subject matter itself is fascinating, and a high quality, well-written book on it would be most welcome.
A very underrated book, although some of reviewer criticisms are quite valid.......2007-05-05
I am a former research scientist and lifelong musician. I also have a graduate education in psychology and I don't approach any of the arts in a reductionistic fashion. It is from this space that I am evaluating this book on its merits with the understanding that its scope is indeed limited to Western music, which is only a small slice of the musical pie.
What I most like about this book is the way it weaves a story of the emergence of hearing and how sound affects us physically and psychology. For this purpose, the author draws on diverse sources such as science, anthropology, sociology, etc. However, he does this by weaving a tapestry of interesting threads, which is not at all like the construction of an academic treatise.
This book is also accessible to anyone and everyone! It is not just for musicians, scientists of psychologists. The target audience is the average person, however, if you have a background in one or more of these areas, you will appreciate the contents even more.
An underlying premise of the book is that music is satisfying because it sets up "anticipations" and then goes about satisfying them in unexpected ways. The more complex the music, the more types of anticipatory events are created and satisfied in more imaginative ways. I didn't really think about this until I read the book, but it's true. I can validate this in my own experience over a lifetime.
While some people may feel the application of biology or any other field is reductionistic, I didn't find this to be the case. Rather, I found that the author used various lenses and legitimate domains of knowledge to explore the many and varied facets of musical experience. Rather than taking away the mystery of what moves us, it makes the whole musical adventure even more fascinating and mysterious.
My guess is that most of you reading this are not familiar with Ken Wilber who is a rather famous contemporary philosopher. Ken espouses a worldview that embraces four irreducible domains of human experience that inform each other. He feels the split between arts, science and morals was the result of one domain (science), dominating the others. I believe there is much truth to this argument, but you will find none of this spirit here. I don't want or need to go into Ken Wilber in detail here, but he provides a very credible and integral worldview and I think this book is very much in the spirit of honoring each domain of human experience without a need to reduce any one of them to another. (For more on Wilber's books, see my listmania lists or for a nice introduction check out A Brief History of Everything.
Brilliant melodies, gorgeous prose.......2007-02-23
This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand how the human mind perceives, understands and translates music. Absolutely wonderful!
A Great Book on the Psychology of Music.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book - in fact I took dozens of pages on a borrowed copy, then had to get my own. It may be a dense read for the layman, but anyone with a bit of science education will understand it, and really appreciate the fascinating perceptual and physical-psychological properties of the sound assortments we call music. A must read......

Great for novices of Tantric. .......2007-10-02
I didn't really have a clue about Tantric sex and was always intrigued. What happens and how do you actually do it? Well, this great book answered all these questions. It gave me a good, solid foundation about tantric and also about how to please a woman. I highly recommended this read. I also liked and woudl recommend: Sex Machine: A Man's Guide to What Really Pleases a Woman in Bed.
great information.......2007-07-01
The various media put out so much "bad" information w.r.t sexuality and relationships. As a teacher it breaks my heart to see our kids respond to all the bad roll models that are forever in the news. This book is a wonderful presentation of good information for "mature adult" relationships. It's a handbook for men on how to communicate the love they feel to the woman in their life. As a woman I was literally dumbfounded that this Australian man could write so clearly and concisely about my fears, desires and experiences. And he had information for my partner on how to lovingly support me both in and out of the bedroom. I encourage reading this as a couple. As a Mom of two adult children and a teen, I feel the best I can do as a parent is to share good information which will hopefully lead to good decisions. I fully intend to share this with my son in anticipation of his wedding, with my daughter to help her clarify what she wants in a relationship and likewise with my teen as he moves into adulthood.
I am basically an over 50 conservative girl-next-door. I am not comfortable with the "selling of sex" that can be associated with some of the tantric literature and media. But I honestly believe that everyone should consider at least the first 4 chapters of this book. I can't help wondering how different all of our lives would have been if our fathers had had this information.
the best Tantra book out there for men.......2004-03-29
The best book, period, for men who want to learn the essence of Tantra without all the attached Eastern mysticism. The techniques and their benefits are broken down into simple, easy to read steps and significance. I found this a great addition to "The Multi-Orgasmic Man." Whether you're looking to last longer in bed, bring more pleasure to your partner, and bring a heightened sense of love and spirituality to your relationship, I found this helpful for all of these things.

DISAPPOINTED.......2007-09-20
I was a bit disappointed with the content of this manual. I thought that it would have given me instructions and recipes in layman terms. These book is designed only chemist, and the trained professional chemist at that.
I work for a drug rehab center in the Virgin Islands and I want my patients to actually see what caustic items go into their systems when they use this stuff
Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture.......2007-08-27
The author (Uncle Fester) is explosive in this seventh edition ver. of Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture.
All I can say is Uncle Fester's no joke when it comes to this edition, or any one of his other books! I mean with 20 something years of Chemistry knowledge in Clandestine Chemistry. Uncle Fester gives a reliable, and detailed explaination of techniques related to making meth He also back's up what he says with References after each chapter. I rate this book Five Stares I also would recomend this by Uncle Fester:[[ASIN:155950174X Advanced Techniques of Clandestine Psychedelic
Very Interesting Reading.......2007-08-14
Very interesting, this book answered a lot of curiousities about how things are done. The only thing is that the book leads you to believe that anyone can just raead the book and make speed. A person would have to already be an established criminal to even start this project. The chemicals, the glassware, none of it is reallistic unless you already had underworld connections. But, as I said, it is interesting, but don't buy it expecting to start business right asway. If you try, good luck. I have to give Uncle Fester his props, he knows the business, but this isn't real when you get right down to it. I wouldn't recommend spending the money. It's interesting, but....
"My Uncle's philosophical bread and butter...".......2007-05-16
This is a must read for anyone involved with clandestine chemistry. All major methods of producing meth are covered in detail; from various phenelacetone reactions to direct reductions, as well as the synthesis of the anologs MDA, MDMA, ect. This is also My Uncle's philosophical bread and butter; as he shares his veiwpoints on the "Narcoswine" as well as some very entertaining and informative stories about 'Fast people'. Highly recommended.
This book has its uses........2007-03-21
I am a lawyer. I found this book useful because it (or rather, the copy police seized from my client - an earlier edition) helped me prove that my client didn't know what the sm3g he was doing when the police alleged he had tried to make methamphetamine.
I'm not advocating the use of or the manufacture of methamphetamine - but I would recomend anyone who regularly prosecutes or defends people in this area to know the processes which are used in the manufacture for real, rather than rely on myths and the police.
