3 out of 5 stars What's a fake marriage...or two...or three..........2007-06-16

I won't bother repeating myself too much. Much of what I've said about Balogh's other books in this series can be said for Slightly Tempted. It wasn't bad or great, and there were a number of things that annoyed me.

When yet ANOTHER fake betrothal became part of the story, I literally wanted to bang my head heavily into a wall. This was the third one of the series (not including Aidan's in-name-only marriage of convenience). It's a nice story hook, but really, how many times can you use it in one series? Three is by far too many. Where is Balogh's originality? Even the other repetitions that I mentioned in the last review persisted. It's rather tedious.

Aside from all that, the book was decent enough. I like Morgan and Gervase. And the mystery surround why Gervase was banished from his home added some depth to what could have been a dull plot. Then there was Alleyne's part in the story. That definitely made things more interesting. If it hadn't been for the fake betrothal, I probably would have liked the book more. But all in all, it was a likable enough book.

3 out of 5 stars Nice..........2007-05-01

This book is pretty good. I mean I like the hott tension between Gervase and Morgan. But it just was alright for me. Gervase is a nice guy i really like him and I like Morgan too. I don't like the big age difference though. But hey love is love. This wasn't one of my favorite Slightly series.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Bedwyn family Regency.......2007-02-06

Mary Balogh's "Slightly" series have been variable in quality. I was rather disappointed with "Slightly Married" (Aidan), "Slightly Wicked" (Rannulf) and "Slightly Sinful" (Alleyne) but thought that "Slightly Scandalous" (Freyja) and "Slightly Dangerous" (Wulfric) were excellent. "Slightly Tempted" is the last of the Bedwyn series that I have read, although chronologically it's book 4 of the 6 (although "Sinful", Alleyne's story, occurs at the same time), and it was a really good read.

"Slightly Tempted" is the story of the youngest of the Bedwyns, daughter Morgan, who is 18 and in her first season. The events take place around the battle of Waterloo and Morgan is in Brussels with her brother Alleyne and a family who are looking after her. She meets Gervase Ashford, Earl of Rosthorne, at a ball and enjoys her conversation with him. Rosthorne's personality seems rather similar to that of Joshua, Marquess of Hallmere in "Slightly Scandalous" - he's fun, witty, a rake (of course!) and yet there are deeper things going on in his character. He was banished from England 9 years before after apparently ravishing a lady neighbour who was about to be betrothed to Wulfric, Duke of Bewcastle and Morgan's brother. Rosthorne feels distinctly uncharitable towards Wulfric and when he discovers Wulfric's sister is in Brussels he resolves to get some revenge on her brother by leading her into some indiscretions.

Of course his plan goes a little awry when he discovers there is more to Morgan than just being a lightweight debutante - they spend a lot of time together and his motives in spending time with her change significantly. However, when returning to England and the talk of society Morgan discovers his past and believes that all his behaviour was designed to hurt her brother Wulfric. How can Rosthorne prove his love is genuine, that he isn't guilty of the horrible event nine years before, and how can her persuade Morgan to marry him when she doesn't trust him?

This book has more historical detail than a lot of Mary Balogh's other works - the setting of the Battle of Waterloo (also shared with "Slightly Sinful") is very well described. I loved the way in which Morgan mucked in with people to help treat the injured and wounded and the descriptions of the final ball before the war were very good. There are also, for those who've read "Slightly Sinful", several events that coincide and the ending of this book introduces a significant event which we read about fully in "Slightly Sinful".

The main character of Morgan is interesting - she's young, brash, doesn't seem to mind too much about public opinion and sometimes seems rather uncaring about her chaperones and companions. On the other hand she's shown as truly caring for the injured after Waterloo and she works to effect forgiveness between Rosthorne and those who wronged him nine years ago. Rosthorne himself is well written although, as I mentioned above, he seems rather like Joshua Moore, Marquess of Hallmere, who also seemed rather like Kit Butler in "A Summer To Remember". Is Mary Balogh running out of types of male character?

The pacing in this book is really good, as are the descriptions of locations in both Brussels and Kent. The Bedwyn family are all over this book of course, and almost every reference to Wulfric seems to involve his quizzing glass (annoying) but in this book I didn't mind the Bedwyn references, although in some others they have been too much.

If you enjoyed the other "Slightly" books then you'll enjoy this one as it's one of the better ones.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series.......2006-07-06

This book is a great addition to the Bedwyn Series, each book is very different and does not have the same plot as some series can lean toward. A great read!!

3 out of 5 stars Typical Mary Balough Romance.......2006-05-24

I find her writing so compelling until the end of the book nears. There is never a dramatic climax to the story. The characters simply decide they love one another, get married, and have a baby. I am a sucker for high drama and this ending disappointed me.

I liked Gervase and thought the relationship with Morgan was believable and touching. However, as I already stated, I felt the ending was dull and not at all emotionally exciting.

5 out of 5 stars When Good Men Are Tempted (updated version).......2007-08-06

This updated version (07/07) of When Good Men Are Tempted covers a subject that is not normally covered in Christian Books: sexual sins. The author does not preach; this is a first person account of fighting sexual temptation.

Rather than feeling isolated in sins or temptations of a sexual nature, this reader felt like a "normal" Christian fighting a battle that other Christian men are also fighting.

Is masturbation a sin? (you hope not, right?) What does the Bible say about it? Ever bring up the subject at Bible study? Ever heard a sermon on the subject? Probably not. This book has a chapter to cover the "M" word.

Subjects that are difficult to discuss with your pastor (or wife) are discussed in this book along with the accounts of great men of the Bible who failed when tempted with sexual sins. Yet there is victory. The author gives the reader a Bible based, prayer based, Christ based plan for victory over sexual temptations.

In a world that is becoming more and more sexually explicit, Christian men need a plan to overcome the world's temptations; I feel that this book, When Good Men Are Tempted, gives us that plan

5 out of 5 stars great reading.......2007-01-11

This is the best book i've ever read I would recommend it to anyone who is serious about his relationships and jesus.

5 out of 5 stars WINNING THE BATTLE OF TEMPTATION .......2006-01-29

Pastor Bill Perkins produced a high quality book on why men succumb to sexual temptations and how they can win the battle against lust. The book begins with an outline of the struggles encountered by men with respect to temptation. The author explains why naked women look so beautiful and in particular, why other women look better than our wives. He explains why men often succumb to lust and why it can be very addictive.

The author comes up with practical suggestions that should help men comprehend the immense power of sexual temptation and how to overcome them. One major step forward is to admit the problem if lust has taken control instead of hiding it. Despite men falling victim to lust and temptation, the author explains that God still loves us and is ready to assist in overcoming the problem.

Among the insightful solutions the author suggests is for men to cultivate buddyship, whereby men develop a strong relationship with a small group of other men, where they share their problems, open up and reveal the secrets that may be bringing shame and guilt to their lives. Together as buddies, and with the help of earnest prayers, they can be helped to overcome the problems with lust and temptation.

I, however, see the possibility of some women readers getting the impression that Christian men see women as sexual objects. This would be unfortunate as the author's message is clear and directed to a particular audience, men, focused on helping those men afflicted with lust and temptation to overcome this menace and not in any way to degrade women.

The author uses a simple writing style that makes the book readable and makes the reader understand the temptations that men are subjected to on a daily basis. The author provides an honest and insightful presentation of why good men are tempted and how they can overcome this problem. The book is recommended reading by all men.

5 out of 5 stars Comments from a Pastor of Men's Ministries.......2004-04-08

Aa a Pastor of Men's Ministries, I frequently have men coming to me for advice because they are struggling with the issues outlined in this book. Sadly, often is the case when these men are not willing to fight but simply give in to their temptations without realizing the consequences of their actions. Bill Perkins does an excellent job of outlining the steps needed to insure victory.
One of the highlights of the book was author Perkins full disclosure in graphic terms of his own vulnerabilities and the battles that he fought to overcome temptation. Often in ministry, you do not hear of this type of transparency and therefore, the ministry leaders credibility becomes questionable. Throughout the book, the author speaks with the authentic reality of what a man's man deals with in daily life to be able to put the Lord first and the seriousness of His commands.
As a result of the impact that I have seen in my own life and many of the men in our church, I can heartily recommend this book for everyone. This statement includes the wives and significant others who will need to better understanding the temptations that every man is subjected to in a world that has become hostile to a fully devoted follower of Christ.

4 out of 5 stars Good Guidelines For Winning The Battle.......2004-01-27

After reviewing the deeply flawed "Every Man's Battle I mentioned that I would read another book with the same theme of sexual purity. To that end I purchased "When Good Men Are Tempted" by Bill Perkins. It is an honest and often disturbing look at the subject. The book claims that "Bill Perkins details a plan for sexual integrity - one that works. He shows men how to achieve a purity that will preserve the sanctity of their marriages, the security of their families, the vitality of their walks with God, and the strength of their relationships with their brothers in Christ."

The book begins with an attempt to understand the struggle men face. Perkins shows why naked women look so good and why other naked women look even better than our wives. He speaks of the addictive cycle of trying to repeat "young love" or our first sexual experiences. We want to be able to relive the original excitement we felt during those often illicit experiences. He illustrates these concepts with the example of Samson.

The author's solution to this problem surrounding lust is simply to raise the white flag. We need to surrender to God and admit the problem rather than run from it or try to hide it. Lust, he says, cannot be overpowered, reformed or starved. It needs to be dealt with and dealt with now! To be dealt with it needs to be dragged into the light so we can deal with the shame and guilt. We need to admit specific sins to God and ask Him for His forgiveness.

The close of this section contains a chapter regarding families of origin. This chapter is confusing and often left me confused as the author discussed the codependent roles we assumed as part of our families and how this leads to problems with purity later in life.

Having admitted the struggle, we are now able to find freedom. To do this we must choose our master and count the cost of the one we will choose. To cease a lifestyle of lust the cost of continuing needs to be higher than the cost of quitting. We need to see that continuing in a lifestyle will have consequences in our relationships with our families, our spouses and most importantly, with God. We need to realize that God can fix us and that He wants to fix us. As He fixes us He will help us discover the new men we are through Him. Through Him we have a new perspective, new presence and new power. With these we can now begin to break the addictive cycle that continually leads us to sin. The practical suggestions the author provides are: memorize Scripture, call on God and find what rituals lead us to sin and learn to break those rituals.

The final section focuses mostly on building accountability relationships with other men. Every man needs ally himself with a small group of men who can help him win the battle against lust by holding him accountable. There is a small section about sex and ideas for spicing up a sex life, followed by a chapter detailing some "tools for tight corners" that can be used in a moment of weakness.

The book is written in a personable way that leaves the reader feeling like he has had a personal chat with the author. Perkins admits his own weaknesses, leaving the reader comfortable admitting his own. Perhaps the greatest strength in this book is the emphasis on the "why" of sexual temptation. Having an understanding of the reasons behind temptation gives a solid perspective on how to deal with it. The author does not attempt to blame our lust on Satan, but emphasizes that our sin is ultimately our own and we need to deal with it. If the emphasis on the "why" is the strong point of the book, I would suggest that the "how" is the weak point. It may be, though, that I am looking for a magical key to stopping sinful behavior. Still, as with Every Man's Battle I am left hoping that God truly can remove this sin, rather than just masking it and helping us deal with it time and time again.

In the end, this book does a far better job of dealing with the subject than "Every Man's Battle" and it receives my recommendation.

The book had a nice pace, and really fun to read when you come home after stressfull day. Loved the characters, and how all three stories entwine. Ms. Foster did a great job.

3 out of 5 stars Starts with a bang, ends with a whimper..........2006-02-23

I must admit, I'm a sucker for trilogies.... it's always nice to see continuity with characters and for them to be further developed than in just one story. Although "Little Miss Innocent?" is really good, by the time you get to "Messing Around with Max" you're left wondering why your wasting your time.

4 out of 5 stars Cute stories.......2005-11-02

The characterizations overlapped a little, but the stories were cute and ended happily. It was a nice rainy day read.

5 out of 5 stars Three Terrific Full Length ReIssues!!!.......2005-09-29

This anthology is a reissue of a trilogy that is a personal favorite. It fast became a recommended read because of the close knit and truly convincing bond between siblings that Ms. Foster presents.

To begin with, you get a taste of the oldest and most mature of the three, Daniel Sawyers in, "Little Miss Innocent?". Daniel isn't real fond of Lace McGee. The way he figures it, she is the cause of his sister's sudden change from youthful tomboy to sexy femme fatale--not a terribly comforting persona for a big brother to have to swiftly become accustomed. Lace is much too brazen and entirely too liberal. However, when she is bitten in the derriere by one of her neighbor's dogs and ends up in the emergency room needing stitches, the physician in him takes a backseat to the hot-blooded man in him. For the first time in all his years, Daniel feels his professional detachment slip a few notches. And that rankles.

Still, being the upstanding guy that he is, Daniel not only stitches up Lace's bottom, but insists on driving her home as well. After all, she is his sister's friend and that makes her practically family. Of course, he refuses to admit that his helping Lace has anything to do with his attraction to her. Mainly because he's already decided not to act on his lusty feelings. So she was sexy. Alluring. And, absolutely every man's dream come to life. She was still all wrong for him. He didn't approve of her profession as Sex Therapist, nor did he care one wit for her forward and outspoken attitude. She talks entirely too candidly, and seems to not have a single modest bone in her lovely body.

But it's not long before Daniel finds himself offering to not only drive Lace home but to stay the night. Things get off track in a hurry and Daniel learns a few things about the blonde beauty he's tried so hard to avoid. For one, Lace McGee isn't the woman he thought she was. In fact, she's much, much more. And poor, struggling Daniel discovers that when he loosens up just the slightest bit, falling in love can be an exhilarating and passionate endeavor indeed!

*******************

Second in this Trio of full-length love stories is, "Annie Get Your Guy". This one turned out to be my own personal favorite. Annie is so much like most of us women: intelligent, talented, and strong, but rather insecure underneath it all. I related to her story, as I think most women will, because of her sweetly tenacious attitude towards Guy Donovan. If you've ever been in love with a man who has never seen you as that of the female gender, then Annie will strike a cord. If you've ever felt desperate to attract a man's attention, even at the cost of your own pride, then Annie will certainly make you smile.

Annie Sawyers is in a struggle with her heart. She is wildly, passionately in love with Guy Donovan and has been ever since she began blossoming into a woman. He, however, sees her as nothing more than a surrogate kid sister. She is so tired of being invisible to the only man that has ever made her blood race and her body burn just by looking at him. And when he announces that he's going to propose to a woman that Annie is just positive he couldn't possibly love, she decides it's high time to get serious with her plans of seducing Guy.

What does a woman do when she wants to prove to a man that she can light his fire and curl his toes? She consults her sex therapist best friend for tips! With Lace McGee's help, Annie locates nearly every book on sex and intimacy that was ever written and starts her education.

Unfortunately, when she relates to Guy that she's trying to attract a man's attention Guy goes ballistic-not realizing that the man is him. Annie sees this as another of his brotherly moments and steps up her seduction attempts by making a few provocative suggestions to the handsome devil. Guy, fearing he's lost his mind for thinking lascivious thoughts about his best friend's sister, swiftly speeds away from Annie and out of temptations reach all together. As a result of his hasty retreat, Guy ends up in a very nasty car accident that lands him in the hospital, banged up from head to toe and high as a kite on pain medication.

Thankfully, Annie comes to his rescue by flitting him off to the family's secluded cabin, where he can both recover in peace and think twice about his silly notions of marriage. Annie, being the sneaky and rather desperate woman that she is, uses this as an opportunity to have Guy all to herself. A cabin out in the woods, no phones, no communication with the outside world. Just her, Guy, a warm fire, and a comfy bed. Oh yeah, baby!

When Guy finally comes to his senses and realizes where he is, he tries, once more, to retreat. Really he does! But, the sweetly innocent Annie, makes it pretty darned difficult when she asks him to please help her become seductive and alluring. In his mind he knows that if any man didn't already see Annie for the desirable woman that she is then he must be an idiot, thus not worthy of Annie anyway. But, he was loathe to let Annie practice her skills on any other man. The very thought makes him sick to his stomach. So, being the decent fellow, Guy gives in and helps Annie. He denies even to himself that it might have anything to do with how hot he is for her. Good lord, he nearly killed himself when he drove head long into a semi truck, because he was thinking of her smooth tight body instead of the road, as he should have been.

Guy's plans are shot when he gets a little too into `helping' Annie and realizes there's no way on God's green earth that she will ever touch another man the way she's touched him.

Oh my, I just love it when the Hero struggles, kicks and screams against the love he feels and then once he comes to terms with it, he doesn't just embrace it, he hugs it close and never lets it go. Guy is the perfect Hero to me because he comes so close to making a huge mistake, but luckily for him he comes to his senses just in the knick of time.

*************************

Last of these three breathtaking stories is the nomadic Max Sawyers in, "Messing Around With Max". Like most middle children, Max is totally misunderstood. Oh sure he's every bit the Lothario his reputation boasts. His sexual prowess has never once been questioned.

Then again, that's before he had decided to swear off casual sex in favor of finding a bride. You see, Max needs a stable home environment for his fat and scruffy dog, Cleo. The poor thing deserves it after all she's gone through.

Then Maddie Montgomery lands at his feet, literally. She sorely tests his resolve. He tries to keep her at arm's length once she admits to not wanting anything to do with marriage, but he's only human for crying out loud!

Maddie wishes to only gain a little sexual experience; to notch her bedpost. Her ex-fiance had hurt her badly when she caught him with another woman and now she's got Max in her apartment and all to herself. Only one problem, he isn't exactly leaping at the chance to have sex with her. He explains-very clearly-that for him, another relationship based solely on sex is not what he's after. So, Maddie decides to hit below the belt. She tells him that she doesn't believe that he's as good in bed as she's heard. Max being 100% male sets out to prove just how good he can be.

Max can't quite seem to get enough of the intriguing woman and he swiftly comes to the conclusion that she's `the one'. Now he just needs to show her that he has more to offer than a good time in the sack.

These two were sweet and hilarious together. Max will surprise you with the depth of his character, and his gentle way with Cleo, his dog, will have you sighing. My favorite scene is when Maddie, who works at a woman's shelter, gets Max to come and talk to the `girls' about satisfying alternatives to sex. What a great scene!

**This story marks a delightful ending to a fabulous trio of stories...**

5 out of 5 stars a must have for every Lori Foster fan.......2005-09-28

Dr. Daniel Sawyers is tired and ready to go home when the unthinkable happens; Lace McGee walks into his emergency room . . . injured. She drives him crazy with her sexually open attitude, and the way she seems to have turned his baby sister from a tomboy into a femme fetal. His instincts as a doctor demand that he care for her injury and his instincts as a man demand that he not let any other doctor, or any other man, touch her. Lace is mortified to have Daniel be the one to take care of her injury and then terrified when he offers to take her home. She has been careful to foster Daniel's misconceptions about her, but her home reveals her true self and allowing Daniel to see that would make her too vulnerable to him. Daniel and Lace are such opposites it was very amusing to watch as they each got to know the "real" person. LITTLE MISS INNOCENT is a textbook case of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Annie Sawyers has been in love with her brother's best friend Guy Donovan since she was a teen, but Guy only sees her as a tomboy and the pesky little sister; that is about to change. Annie is changing her image and Guy will finally notice her as a woman. His announcement that he plans to ask another woman to marry him throws her for a loop and she is afraid that she will lose him before she gets a chance to implement her plan. Fate intervenes and offers Annie the perfect opportunity to get his attention and she intends to do just that. ANNIE, GET YOUR GUY is sweet and laugh-out-loud-funny. There were times that Annie threw Guy for so much of a loop that I ALMOST felt sorry for him.

After her engagement ends in disaster and humiliation, Maddie Montgomery is looking for someone to help her put notches in her bedpost. Ladies man, Max Sawyers is looking for someone to settle down and help him raise Cleo, his dog. Maddie thinks that Max is perfect she just has to talk him into a FLING. Max thinks that Maddie is perfect he just has to talk her into a COMMITMENT. How can you not love a man who is sweet, sexy and loves his dog? MESSING AROUND WITH MAX is the type of story that can be read again and again and never lose its charm.

I absolutely love connecting stories and NOBODY does them better than Lori Foster. The stories of these three siblings were previously released as category titles and as they are all on the very hard to find list, and some of Ms. Foster's earliest work, it is a real treat to have them all together in one book.

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-07-05

I enjoyed the first book, Out of the Night, the second book Seduced by the Night was fairly good, but this book was third rate at best. I couldn't get into the characters. The plot was stupid. It just seemed to be thrown together. The author had to find a way to incorporate Detective John Boehler into being a Night Slayer by having him turned in the middle of the book. The man is now half human half vampire and he doesn't seem upset about it or have any plausible reaction to it. It was hurried and lacked action or suspense. The love story was pathetic. I did not care for this book at all. I don't know that I would invest in her next book. The series has lost most of it's earlier appeal. The first book was fresh, inventive, and had plenty of surprises and twists and turns. This last book was difficult to get through.

2 out of 5 stars Bad.......2007-03-29

The first two in the series were fairly entertaining. This last entry made the series not worth reading anymore. From the first, Jessica Winslow was annoying with Detective John Boehler not much better. The characters were really cardboard and stired no emotion except irritation. I skipped the middle and went to the end.

Readers are encouraged to try J. R. Ward's series or that written by Marjorie Liu. Nalini Singh has also started a wonderful new series. All are well written and entertaining. Right now there seems to be a dearth of new paranormal books published.

"Tempted in the Night" is really not worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars The best yet!.......2007-03-09

This is a book you will not want to put down. More charachters, more fun. I can't wait till #4.

4 out of 5 stars For lovers of paranormal romance.......2007-02-13

Robin T. Popp brings us yet another thrilling adventure in this her latest Night Slayer book, Tempted in the Night.

Beautiful brunette Jessica Winslow lives with one obsession--destroying as many vampires as she can. Her lust for revenge has its roots in her childhood, when she witnessed one of the undead brutally kill her own mother. Now, she will stop at nothing to seek justice and protect innocent victims from the same fate.

Detective John Boehler has one aim in mind--finding a savage serial killer who's terrorizing the D.C. area. That is, until a group of strange vigilantes called the Exsanguinators capture the criminal and leave his body devoid of blood. There's only one problem: What happens when the serial killer awakens as one of the undead?

In spite of their mutual attraction, which threatens to do them more harm than good, Jessica and John join forces to destroy the serial killer vampire...but at what price? Are they ready to fall into darkness and lose their souls to achieve their goal?

The story starts with an exciting scenario, grabbing the reader into the world of the characters, then maintains a rather quick pace until the end. There are enough romance and supernatural thrills to keep fans of the genre happy. Popp creates her own chupacabra myth and hierarchy of vampires, adding a certain level of originality to the plot.

The only aspect of the novel that didn't work for me was characterization. Jessica, though sympathetic, somehow didn't come through enough to make me care her predicament. I had problems with the hero as well, mainly because of character inconsistencies--he seems to behave like two different men in the first and second parts of the book. These two problems made me lose connection to the plot during the second half of the story.

Armchair Interviews says: All in all, this is an entertaining book that will be enjoyed by most fans of vampire romance.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars.......2007-02-03

Jessica Winslow's first meeting with Detective John Boehler is less than auspicious; he arrests her and puts her in a cell for the criminally insane. After all, she was tearing through his city with a sword. What he did not know was that she was hunting vampires. That would have made all the difference. He's also determined to stop vampires, one in particular, a killer he let go. They find themselves working together in a united cause, but things are more deadly than either had ever anticipated. Along with the heros and heroines from the past Nightslayer books, the duo has a mission that will change or end their lives. Perhaps a bit of both.

**** Action and romance keep the pages flying to a heart-stopping conclusion. The world of the Nightslayers develops and becomes more detailed in this book. Shades of grey add new depth and one of the most fascinating secondary characters to date plays a large role in this installment of the saga. You will be left wanting more. ****

4 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-07-29

This book was a total surprise and far more interesting than your standard romance novel. On the positive side, it is well written, with interesting characters and history, so much so I found I couldn't put the book down. On the downside, there is a crudeness to their bed sport that gets old, but that said, it was a really good read and made me a fan.

3 out of 5 stars Not too tempted.......2007-05-05

Maybe this could've been saved by a decent edit, but here were the issues that turned the potential from "scorcher" to "snoozer":

1. A gypsy predicted the heroine's future in the first chapter. This had lots of potential - especially if things didn't work out quite as they were foretold - but, alas, no. With this outline for the plot, NOTHING was a surprise, not even to the heroine. In order for betrayal to feel like betrayal, at the VERY least, the characters shouldn't see it coming.

2. The foretold plot points didn't start for about 250 pages. Unclear why the first half of the book wasn't edited out...

3. The explanation for the mystery surrounding a long-ago murder was unsatisfying, and it didn't make sense why things weren't discovered earlier.

4. While the hero and heroine seemed to have a hot physical relationship, there wasn't so much romance.

The most redeeming aspects of the story were the ghosts and the gypsies. I'd heard that this was the best of VH. While this novel hasn't convinced me not to try ENSLAVED, my expecations aren't too high...

1 out of 5 stars Where to begin..........2007-02-28

I read the negative reviews and I decided to buy the book anyway because I liked the others ones shes written. I made it to chapter 16 of this book. That was how long it took to get to the main character's story. I lost interest in the story because she took so long in getting to it.
On top of that, there was far more sex than romance. Most of it was in very poor taste and I didnt like it at all. I would not recommend this book. It is certainly not one of her better works. I would recommend A year and a Day. That book is fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars One of My All Time Favorites!!! A Classic.......2006-12-04

The previous reviewer has done a wonderful job of expressing just how great and timelessly enduring this book is. I bought my first Henley in the early 90s and have loved her books ever since. This one is my Henley favorite.

I am a true history buff and I love this book not only for the quality of the writing and the depth and complexity of the characters but for how much Ms Henley brought the period and the Douglasses to life. They were truly that powerful and that feared in Scottish history. They were called the "Black" Douglasses and used by parents to scare little kiddies into behaving because their projenitors were "Moors" and they were truly "Black" for the first couple of hundred years (in the Middle Ages) before intermingling. (Check out David MacRitchie's Ancient and Modern Britons if you want more info - but it's textbookish - not for the fainthearted.) I had always been a little bit in love with the legend of the Black Douglasses and Ms. Henley's portrayal of these historical characters was perfect. Add to that her imagery of the English and Scottish courts and their lifestyles, the battle of Flodden, the Scottish/English border disputes and raids, etc.... she truly captured this period and in so doing captured me with this book.

The setting and historical period aside..the characters in this book are intriguing. Black Ram Douglass is the ultimate Aries MAN and Tina the Ultimate Woman. They are so wonderfully drawn and so fully developed that even Ramsay's distinctive tone of voice comes across. Their relationship is followed from their first meeting as clan enemies to their forced handfasting by the Scottish King. The relationship truly develops on paper and the reader can see how these two characters evolve, grow, change, and mature. The forceful, aggressive character that is Black Ram is matched by Tina's stubborn, eccentric Aquarius character. It makes sense. Tina is not the type of woman that could be married to just any man. She is a force to be reckoned with - not because she's foolishly hardheaded like so many romance heroines - but because she has a strong, courageous, forceful character that is all her own. She's outrageous in a way that only a truly beautiful woman who knows that men will forgive her anything is outrageous. That kind of woman in that time period needed a man much stronger than herself - and strong enough to keep other men away from her!

There is so much more that could be said about this book. It is a classic. The subplots and supporting characters are wonderfully intricate. But I will stop here. I think you get the idea.

This book is an excellent read for those who like more meat and depth to their historical romance. It is written in such a way that the history comes to life in a wonderfully sensual love story.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My All-Time Favorites.......2005-10-16

I am a HUGE Virginia Henley fan, and it all started with this book. The story was well written with numerous plots and subplots that helped to accentuate the developing love between the unbeknownst heroine and hero. There is a lot of strong language and intensely erotic love scenes, but it is acceptable when entwined with the setting at hand. Henley was very adept in adding a subtle role reversal between Tina and Ram.

Black Ram Douglas is the quintessential ALL MAN hero. He has the usual hero traits of intelligence, strength, ambition and unmatched sexual appeal(captured brilliantly by the model used in the picture), but Henley delves further by adding more layers to this larger than life character. His hard sometimes vulgar machismo personality was tempered by his love of children, respect for family and land, charm and humor as well as being an undercover romantic. Ram's gentleness towards Tina, and concern for her every comfort and well being are a delightful transition from his rugged high-handedness. We are allowed to see Tina fall in love with Ram and understand WHY she loves him, from antagonistic hatred to the revelation of a man so suited to her, the word soulmate seems lacking and inadequate.

Valentina was no innocent. She had the normal heroine trait of being intelligently chaste with heartstopping beauty that left men breathless and women envious. Tina was more than that. From the beginning she was shown as a brave hoyden with a loyalty to surpass most men. She was clever with a shockingly humorous charisma that was engagingly seductive. A true tomboy, Flaming Tina was fearless in all things, with an intense devotion to those she loved as well as any endeavor she approached.

The descriptiveness of the violence and war, was a perfect accompaniment to the intrigue of court and familial entanglements. This novel has it all. After fifteen years of owning this book, I can honestly say I read it at least once a year. With mediocre writers publishing disappointingly lackluster novels, the tried and true always lures me back for the desired enjoyment of a brilliant romantic read.

Fallen Angels

Buffy's shaken to learn that Celina, the new girl in town, is actually a vamp who's heard of Buffy's rep. She's here to challenge the Slayer and even Angel -- in L.A. -- is concerned that this time, Buffy may be in over her head.

Celina's not the only monster skulking about the neighborhood. D'Hoffryn has returned to Sunnydale to offer Anya another chance as a vengeance demon. Can she give up her romance with Xander and the friendships she's forged as a mortal for another shot at immortality -- even if it comes with a horrific price tag? Dawn tries to explain to Anya that humanity is worth the occasional heartache, even as she has doubts of her own.

Suddenly Buffy learns the terrifying truth about Celina: she's not just any vamp -- she was once a Slayer herself. Buffy has struggled with her own dark side enough to question the subtle distinction between "Slayer" and killer. If Celina turned Buffy, and Willow restored Buffy's soul, could she possibly find love with Angel at last?

And, more importantly, would she still be a hero?

5 out of 5 stars a great read.......2007-08-06

I absolutely loved this story. This was one of my first Buffy books and I still think it is one of the best. The plot was enjoyable and suspenseful. The characterization was great. The enemy of Celina was intriguing and well-written. You should read it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-03-31

This is one of my favorite buffy books ever! It has an great story (probably one of the best story lines in a buffy novel), I like how the author came up with an original story line instead of using the same tired story lines that have been used in other buffy books. I love how the author writes the characters, they act and talk just like they do in the show.( which is also rare in other buffy books)
I would recomend this book to any buffy the vampire slayer fan
P.S.(Anya lovers will enjoy this book)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Buffy book.......2005-06-27

I really enjoyed Tempted Champions. This season 5 book was amazing. Celina, the vampire who used to be a slayer, made a perfect villian for Buffy to go up against. I also loved how Anya had to chose to either become a demon again or stay human. Some other things I liked about Tempted Champions include Angel being back in town, lots of parts with Spike, and many different times that made you think about what you would've done if you were that character. There weren't really any bad parts in this book, but there were a few editing mistakes. Over all the plot was good, the characters acted like they do in the show, and the end was very climactic. I highly recommmend this book to both old and new fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-04-03

This was, overall, a good book. I bought it, though, because of Anya's major role in it. I was dissapointed, however, because the part with Anya in it was over very early in the book. It was still a good book, but don't buy it just because of Anya's role in it, because you will be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars Good story, interesting dilemma.......2005-02-20

This book presents in interesting dilemma for both Buffy and Anya, even though Anya's temptation wasn't all that convincing to me. I could, however, feel for Buffy. The chance to be with the one you love, forever (literally).
The book itself is well written, as are the characters, for the most part. I enjoyed the part that Spike plays (tied naked to his bed nonetheless). Anya was a bit too over-written, too much sex/-money talk.
Not as great as other Buffy novels, but still a good read!

3 out of 5 stars A Nice Story and First In A Series!!!.......2005-08-17

Ms. Holling has created a very nice read with the first of her "Brides of the Bloodstone" series. With a mystery surrounding a mythical stone two families are bound to the other looking for a way to hold the stone.

Robert Maxwell is looking for peace for his family and clan. This bold Scottish leader decides that the easiest way to do this is to marry Caroline Graham. Marrying this lass will solve two problems. One, it will insure peace between the feuding families, and two, hopefully Carolines' brother will honor the agreement by freeing his brother that is being held hostage. Robert wants this thing to work so he is willing to be patient with his new bride, but will he be able to thaw the ice that seems to surround her on all sides?

Caroline Graham wants to be a nun. A bride of Christ, not a bride of Robert Maxwell. She knows though that her wishes are the least to be considered. Men, after all think of them only as pawns in their quest for peace. Despite Caroline's stubborn nature, she can't help but wonder if her husband is truly sincere when it comes to her. Can he really find her pretty, and desirable? Only time will tell but can she trust her heart to such a man? Is it her heart he wants to hold, or the mythical stone?

This was a nice well written read. Robert and Caroline were interesting characters although Caroline after a time became a bit too much. Thankfully she had a hero with patience which balanced out the read. Ms. Holling is a talented author and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Courtesy of The Best Reviews

Robert Maxwell, Laird of Clan Maxwell, longs for peace and the end to a bloody feud with the English Grahams. In order to achieve this, he decides to wed the oldest sister of the Graham family head. Robert enters into this agreement, much to the dismay of his entire clan, swearing to do whatever is necessary to make the alliance a happy one.

Caroline Graham is furious with her brother for signing her life away to the hated Maxwells. She has been convinced all her life no man would ever want her, the ugly sister, and she had planned to give herself to the Church as a nun. So she enters into this marriage determined to keep her icy demeanor (and her maidenhead) intact and show Robert just how unsuitable she was for a wife.

Robert is pleased when he meets Caroline and sets a course of seduction to convince her she is neither the ugly duckling she believes herself to be, nor the nun she desires to be. Caroline's walls are gradually beaten down by a very determined Robert, and she finds herself falling for him, all the while convinced he couldn't possibly love her.

An ancient legend stands in their way, however. There is a magical stone, taken from the scabbard of the legendary Excalibur, said to protect the possessor from harm. This stone is the basis for the nasty feud, and the cause of a deadly massacre 60 years previous. Problems escalate again upon the marriage of Robert and Caroline, as her greedy brother wants the stone for his own.

Can Caroline and Robert overcome their fears and plaguing doubts? Will their binding relationship put an end to the feud forever as legend proclaims?

Ms. Holling has woven an intricate tale of passion, greed, and vengeance. This book runs the gamut of emotions and desire. The characters are engaging, though it took this reviewer a while to warm up to Caroline. The plot is seamless and the legend of Excalibur is worked in effortlessly. The story is slow going for the first few chapters, but once it picks up, the reader will not be disappointed.

One will be eagerly waiting to see how the rest of the story pans out in successive books. This is a delightful read and comes highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars okay fluff.......2005-09-12

For a light and frothy romance, this is a book with characters more three dimensional than usual. Part of a series of books involving a revolving family of characters, many introduced in her other works. Nice plot, decent writing. Readers who are into their romance novels will find this book more than acceptable.

3 out of 5 stars More an adventure book than a romance novel........2003-09-06

I guess this book is fine if you are looking for adventure more than romance. Don't misunderstand me, the book had romance, but I felt like the principal theme was the war, the mission to recover the treasure and the intrigue, with romance added like an afterthought.
It really got tiresome how Robert and Olivia could not trust each other or even communicate. All the conflicts between them could have been solved if they had simply talked to each other. And why was Robert always so ready to assume the worst about Olivia? Even when the evidence pointed to the contrary? It only took his brothers a moment to figure out she wasn't the killer of Orlando. And why was Olivia always trying to run away from him? She was wanted for murder, and under the circumstances Robert was the only protection she had. Where would she had gone, had she scaped from him?
And don't get me started on the improbability of two cousins looking so alike that everybody would mistake one for the other. They would have to be twins to be so alike!
In general, I really don't like to see war mixed with romance. Military men don't make my favorite heroes, nor does war and killing my favorite setting for a romance novel, and I think maybe that's why this novel is not memorable for me. The epilogue was my favorite part of the book, although I pity Olivia. Four children in four years of marriage, all this while living in a campsite while her husband did war? Poor woman!
All in all, the book was not bad, just not my favorite kind.

5 out of 5 stars A very adventurous Regency romance.......2003-05-30

"Once Tempted" is my first book by the author and in my opinion a very good one. The setting is Regency London and the Penninsula during the Napoleonic Wars.Miss Olivia Sutton is a young lady living under a false name since she was betrayed by her so-called lover, the Marquis of Bradstone. Bradstone sullied her name and reputation involving her in treason. Major Robert Danvers arrives in London on a mission. He is masquerading as his treasonous cousin and he intends to make his mission successful by finding and using Olivia. When they meet they are both shocked and surprised. Olivia is not a plain unsignificant girl Robert was led to believe and she shows lots of spirit and passion, which captivates Robert.Olivia fights very hard not to fall under the strong charm of the Marquis again but she is shocked and helplessly attracted to him especially when she finds out his true identity. They don't trust each other at all. Olivia wants to clear her sullied name and Robert wants to fullfil his mission.Their life is in danger and they have to leave London. During their journey to Spain they encounter many dangerous obstacles and they constantly fight for their lives. They start seeing each other in different lights and they can't resist the growing attraction between them. Their love is passionate, sensual and desperately heartaching. There is much danger, dishonesty, violence and bloodthirst around them and the way to victory and fullfilment of their love leads through the horrors of war. This is a very well-written historical romance set during the Napoleonic Wars. The author managed to combine enough love and action to make it a wonderful piece of work. All the characters are well developed and excitingly alive.
ONCE TEMPTED is a brilliant historical romance with an action-packed storyline, a passionate love story and likeable characters from one of the most fascinating eras in history. I look forward to the other novels written by this talented author.

4 out of 5 stars I read colin's story first and then read this.......2002-08-23

I found it really strange how this book took place in 1812 and the sequel - which is actually a prequel came out this year and took place in 1800. I liked the newest book the best so far. This one got boring towards the middle and towards the end I just wanted to get finished. This is the 3rd book I read of hers, and my least favorite so far. I still give it 4 stars because it is better then most books - I just expected more from the author.

5 out of 5 stars A Page Turner that you won't be able to put down.......2002-05-24

This book caught my attention from the first page and I sat up all night reading it. Olivia and Robert are well matched and the love story is passionate and heated. If you like your stories full of suprises and action, this is your book. I have only one question--when is the author going to write Colin's book???

2 out of 5 stars My first Cathy Maxwell book was a disappointment........2006-04-29

The plot line was bizarre, Deb was annoying, and Tony was a whiny baby. Definitely one of the worse historical romances I've read.

Thankfully, I gave Cathy Maxwell another chance and read "Adventures of a Scottish Heiress." It was much better.

4 out of 5 stars A LIGHT DEPARTURE FOR A GLOOMY DAY.......2006-02-13

Deborah Percivals plauge in life have been the grand-dames in her little town in the country, having coerced her into marriage with a man more that 30 years her senior at the tender age of 16. Now a widow, and still an outcast because of her French origins, the town matchmakers are back again, urging her to marry a widow with more than enough children to keep her occupied. Having sacraficed her childhood for her sisters' welfare, she finds that the huge favor was taken for granted, for living with her sister's family makes her feel wholly unwelcome.

On a visit to her younger sister's home in the city, she encounters Tony, Earl of Aldercy, a formidable man of wealth and intrigue. Like her, he has given up on the idea of love, having bethrothed himself recently to a suitably high-born woman on the grounds of convience. And yet, upon meeting each other, their hearts come alive and somewhere along the way they fall in love. But it's a fight against time, for soon the weather would clear, the bridge would be up, and it would be time to make any necessary declarations, or part ways. They must strive to decide whether their new-found love would be just those few days at the hotel inn, or forever.

The story offers the common place framework, i.e. the unsuitable woman meets a man of rank, etc., etc. However, the way Maxwell works with the characters and the story-line makes her stand out. The dialogue between Deb and Tony is very fun to follow, and the blend of humor and romance is lively and entertaining. Having read much of her work, I can say that this is one of my favorites in her line. It's a great rainy day book, but doesn't really qualify as a romantic masterpiece. It's light and fun, not exactly powerful enough to cause that flutter in your stomach if you know what I mean. But, with so many romances out there with similar plots, its easier to take notice of who does it well and who doesn't, and I would say she does not rank with the latter.

5 out of 5 stars For Once, The Title is True To The Story!!!.......2005-12-23

I have read quite a few books by Cathy Maxwell this past year. She was a new author I found and I took a chance on some of her stories. I have read "Treasured Vows", "Falling in Love Again", "The Price of Indiscretion" (all three not bad - average), "You and No Other" (pretty good) and "Because of You" and now "The Lady is Tempted" (the last two being excellent!).

I'm always excited when I stumble upon an author I like. I have read thousands of romance novels since the mid 80's when I was in high school and then stopped the last few years as I got bored. All the stories seemed the same. I was fortunate to find some great authors this past year and started reading again. A good story makes me dream, wish for more and even inspires me to be better. So...a good romance with interesting characters, detailed story lines and a smashing ending are more than just words in a book for me. They are inspiration.

SO...after reading "The Lady is Tempted" I was smiling and pleased again at the experience. If you are a true historical romance reader and love a strong leading lady and a strong yet, kind leading man - this will be a great book for you. Our heroine Deborah is a gal we can all relate to and you will root her on! She begins the book as a widowed woman of 27 in a small, rural English village where everyone knows everything about you. Her family and the leading townsfolk have run Deborah's life for her and made her decisions (sad to say). Many women of this time held similar lives - woman were not open minded, strong and determined back then as they are in today's world. Many families dictated what would happen in a girl's life and poor Deb was no different. Deborah takes the leap to true womanhood and independence by leaving to go help her sister, brother-in-law and new baby in the city of London for a short while to get away.

It is during this trip to town that Deborah becomes a new woman -the woman she was destined to be. How you ask? Why she simply takes shelter in a local cottage run by a woman named Marmy and as Deborah is taking off her hat and gloves to warm in the library near a fire, she comes face to face with her other half - Anthony Aldercy, the Earl of Burnell. The other half she didn't know existed, could only dream about and now she has to find courage within herself to take what she wants in life and not wait for crumbs to be left to her.

The beauty of this book is that for once, our hero, Anthony, feels exactly the same. And he tells her this instead of playing games and being coy. He lived a similar life to Deborah's so, they have much in common. Two people doing the right things for everyone but, themselves. For a few shorts days as the storm rages on...the two find the strength to act on their impulses and please themselves which in turn pleases the other. Of course, once the storm ends, reality returns and they have to deal with what the world expects of them as well.

You do wish Tony had the courage earlier in the book to take scandal head on instead of trying to avoid it for so long. Good comes from those who do as their heart dictates not just what is in their head and Tony finds this out in his own time. But...the author does give you alot of back ground about his upbringing, his parents and family to understand fully why he became the man he was. Tony didn't rush out on impulse or constantly thrwart society's rules...he knew the damage that could be done if you did this. His family experienced it first hand so, his caution was understandable.

Other reviewers wisely commented on how irritating Deb's sisters and husbands could be. They often took advantage of her kindness and even when they treated her poorly - she often took the beating with little comment. At points that frustrated me too as we all wanted her to stomp, shout and put them in their place and possibly leave but...that wouldn't be a story would it? I think the author showed this side to Deb as she was a woman who would do for others even what they might not do for her. She was truely silent, strong and good - regardless of how nasty those around her could be. Why? Because her kind always trumps the bad ones if given time. Perhaps the author wanted us to see real people and real families. You can't always challenge everyone and everything - it just isn't possible. Sometimes you have to take people - especially family - with a grain of salt and your eyes wide open. That includes still keeping them in the family circle even with all their flaws. We get to see that Deb and Tony's goodness ends up rubbing off on others. It's win-win for all in the end as hopefully their positive ways will make her siblings and their husbands better people in time and have less selfish ways. We even get proof of this later in the book.

This book is deep, detailed and very heart warming. You know with a romance the ending will be good but, you'll have to buy this one to find out how Tony over-comes a contract to marry another man's daughter, how he helps out her family, how he finds out who his real father is, how he finds the courage to make Deb his own and how Deb finds the courage to leave her old town and become the woman she is destined to be - a wife, a lover and mother. Plus...she does stand up to others as she gains her confidence. She finds out who she is by the end of the book and at that point...nothing can stand in her way.

I'm sad to see Deb and Tony's story end as I really liked these characters and the hurdles they had to face to become who they were truly meant to be. The love scenes were simple and tastefully written. The characters were all well rounded and interesting. The beginning, middle and end of the book was powerful and detailed and never lost steam.

Do pick up this book and try this author if you have not. Especially "Because of You" and "The Lady is Tempted" - they are both first class reads. Be tempted yourself. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars satisying love scenes, frustrating characterzations.......2005-10-22

this is my second Cathy Maxwell book. The author is quite talented and this book was very enjoyable. My only problem with it was the hero, Tony. His mantra of "I can't live without you, but I cannot marry you" got a bit tedious. Of course, being a romance, all works out in the end-but I still wanted to throttle the male lead-he was a bit "too stupid to live" at times:)

The love scenes are highly charged-probably out of place in a regency-but darn good anyway.

Overall, a fast paced, entertaining read
3.5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2004-12-08

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I instantly connected with both Deborah and Tony -- both very likable characters who deserved each other. I especially enjoyed Maxwell's character development, in that she shared the thought processes of Deb and Tony as their relationship blossomed and evolved.

Many times you read these historical fiction novels with the male lead as a rake, rogue, or hellion, who is a lothario with a legion of women in their past. I liked reading this historical novel showing that there were men during this time who valued relationships and wouldn't give up on someone they cared for.

I recommend this book, and look forward to reading more of Cathy Maxwell's book!

5 out of 5 stars It's a "Happily Ever After!".......2006-07-06

Wow, so it has been since high school that I've read a book that dates back to the 1700-1800's. But once I got into the swing of things, it became as familiar to me as any other book. Let me say there were even some pretty steamy scenes! Whew...! Pam has proved herself to write exceptionally well on opposite sides of the spectrum. From NASCAR to old world. I absolutely loved this book. Great job, Pam!

4 out of 5 stars Kidnapping, a monkey, romance and the Circus - wow what a fun novel !.......2006-04-13

I enjoy Pamela Brition's books for her humor and creative storylines. This is the old story made new. Mary becomes the nurse to Alex the Marguis of Warrick daughter. Mary previous job was working in the Circus so It is a huge jump that Alex and Mary would fall in love but a sweet story.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITES :).......2006-02-03

I am disappointed at some of the negative reviews here. This book is one of my favorite books. I love all of Pamela Britton's historical romances because she puts so much emotions in them. She reminds me so much of Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Lorainne Heath, and a little of Judith Mcnaught. (McNaught is great but sometimes there are just too much negative actions in her books. Pamela is similar to McNaught in that she puts tremenduous emotions in her books that you can feel it. I actually think Britton's books are much funner.) Anyway, this book is wonderful. If you love historical romances, please read this book and form an opinion of it yourself!

P.S. I'm was trying to find new historical romances that she has writton but all her new romances are Nascars. I really wish that she would write more historical romances - I've read her last three and they were the best I've read out there!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Historical Romance Full of Wit and Comedy........2005-02-04

I loved this book. The heroine, Mary, is a genuinely amusing, strong-minded woman who deserves to find true love and acceptance. She meets her match in Alex, a Marquis who is determined to not follow in his lecherous father's footsteps. And yet, he's very tempted to seduce Mary, who he has hired to be his daughter's nurse. The plot takes many fun, unexpected turns and you can tell Pamela Britton really did her research. She also has a great ear for dialogue. If you love historical romances, this is one to try, even if you fear you've read the same plot over and over again. Britton writes very well and knows how to set up and engaging story.

5 out of 5 stars It's a keeper.......2004-10-25

I loved the characters. Yeah, the plot is outrageous but Britton pulls it off because of the characters. I adore the fact that they stayed consistent and true to themselves yet I was convinced that they would find a way to be happy and married.

Sure, from the moment she walks into an interview with a Lord and doesn't try to hide her smart mouth, low-born Mary is over the top -- usually on purpose. But because she's such a intelligent, loving, larger-than-life woman, you know she'll thrive where ever she ends up. Alex, the marquis in question, redeems himself again and again, as he learns to be worthy of her.

Golly I love this book! Thank you for writing it, Ms. Britton.
