Best true crime book ever.......2007-09-28
This is the book that got me hooked on true crime, and Ann Rule by far is the best true crime author. Diane Downs was a self serving monster who sacrificed her children for her own needs. I have read this book many times over, and am still chilled by the lack of compassion that Diane showed her own children for the sake of a man. I hope she rots in prison.

I will always hold Small Sacrifices as the best true crime book I have ever read...Between the voluminous detail and twisted story of the sickest criminal I have ever read about, this is a work of art for the genre. I use this to compare all other T.C. books and call this Ann Rule's masterpiece. I also hope Ms. Downs rots in.....

This book kept me up at night I could not believe a mother could be so insane,and still noone could see her sickness. "Small Sacrifices by Ann Rule is a chilling and factual account of a female psychopath who was willing to sacrifice her own children for an unrequited love. Diane Downs committed an unthinkable crime that had many folks fooled into believing her innocence. The details and description of the crime and machinations of this narcissistic suspect involved in such a difficult case were brilliantly portrayed as only a writer with Ann Rule's experience could convey to the reader.
In my capacity as the author of "Practical Homicide Investigation" and my work as a homicide and forensic consultant, I have often searched literature for good reference material and have cited Ann Rule in the past for her magnificent true crime case histories of some of our most violent felons. This particular work stands out due to its detailed research and psychological insight into the mind of the female psychopath. The conduct of Diane Downs confounds the average person because as a civilized society most people simply can't believe that a mother would kill her own children to try to keep a lover. Yet, remember Susan Smith? As I commented on that case for the national media, I had Ann Rules book, "Small Sacrifices," as a frame of reference for such despicable and outrageous behavior. Just like in the Diane Downs case, most people wanted to believe that Susan Smith was a victim. Early on during the investigation when I stated that I believed that Susan Smith was a viable suspect I was subject to criticism by many folks who thought that I was cruel to suggest such an opinion. However, for me it was not speculation. I had concluded from her initial statements and subsequent behavior that she was responsible for her children's disappearance and even cited Ann Rules book about Diane Downs as an excellent example of this phenomenon. When it was revealed that Susan Smith had in fact killed her children so that she would be "free" to pursue a boyfriend most people were incredulous.
Interestingly, while in prison Susan Smith continued with her pathology engaging in sexual liaisons with prison guards. Diane Downs also who pursued her sexual fantasies by corresponding with male prisoners. What is fascinating about the female psychopath is that their behavior is so out of sync with society's expectations that they are consistently able to con and manipulate their way through life destroying what is in their way with total impunity.
This book was Ann Rule at her best. I highly recommend it.

Rob Eager has really hit on something strong here; that a dating relationship will fully prosper only when each individual is FULLY satisfied in Jesus Christ first and foremost, above all else. Eager says it is only by totally understanding Christ's love and acceptance for ourselves, that we are able to strive to correctly and unselfishly love someone else in a dating situation.
This book was referred to me during a very difficult time in my life when my 2 year dating relationship suddendely ended. It helped me understand and endure much of the heartache I lived through during that time. If you're going through a dating downfall and need clarity on what this dating thing is all about, read this book.
I know that some Christian dating books can seem over the top and impractical, but Rob Eager gives very solid and down to earth principles of what dating is really about. I was also very impressed with how Biblicaly based his book is as he constantly drops in scripture throughout the book to back up his thoughts.
Not only has this book re-tooled the way I view dating relationships, but it has encouraged my overall walk with Christ a great deal. I very highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an excellent, practical, Biblical and knowledgeable approach to dating in today's world.

Wow, this book rebuked me to the core and i am a better woman because of it. I thought it was all about me and what i wanted, but its all about Jesus, And through Jesus loving the other person through me. I never knew that God cared so much about my love life. After i read this book i read Boundaries in Dating. i am glad i read it in that order cause i would have misundertood the use of boundaries and attacked the man i love.

I just got Dating with Pure Passion yesterday and almost finished it last night! I wish that I could have read this book 3 years ago. It's an excellent tool to learn the godly path to true love. Rob Eagar has a clear, forthright writing-style and offers relatable, real-life illustrations. I highly recommend this book!
Best Book I've Read on Dating.......2005-12-01
Dating with Pure Passion is probably the best book I've read concerning Christian singleness. Other books tend to be overly idealistic or lean toward spiritual formulas. Rob Eagar has taken the topic of dating, and used it to point singles to their biggest need, which is understanding the love that God has towards us. This is a lesson that must be learned by every human being who wants to experience a great relationship, whether they're single or married.

Marietta Greentree is the daughter of Aphrodite, an infamous courtesan, she is used by a man who only wanted to see how a courtesan's daughter was. Her reputation and heart were left in tatters, so she decides to become a courtesan. Aphrodite informs Marietta, that to become a courtesan there are a few rules she must abide by. Never fall in love, be cold-hearted, and business always comes before pleasure. Aphrodite gives Marietta small tasks to complete, first she has to get Max to teach her how to kiss, but will he agree to the terms? As Marietta tries to seduce Max, certain things come to light, like how accident-prone he is or are they really accidents? Marietta ignores her heart but can she be persuaded to listen to her heart?
When Max has another of his accidents it is Marietta who tends to him. He tries hard to keep her out of his life, but she has a way of getting under his skin. He promises to teach her the ways of men and women. Once he has a taste of her, he cannot forget her. He doesn't believe he is good enough for her, but the thought of other men touching her sends his blood boiling. Can he convince Marietta that he is the one and only man for her before the next attempt on his life?
RULES OF PASSION is the second book in the Victorian Series by Sara Bennett. RULES OF PASSION is a page turner. I couldn't put it down; I had to find out what the causes of the accidents are. I was always caught with this book in hand, either sitting at my table, or standing at the cash register, reading while waiting for the customers to finish. I can't wait for the third book in the series to come out. This book is the perfect example of how passion rules.

What fun this book was. The wit and the pacing really a joy to read. As with all fluffy historical romances, the book is a breeze, no mental challenge, just good escapism. The characters have great chemistry and nicely developed. A rolicking read.

This is the second book about the Greentree sisters and is Marietta, the middle sister's story. Marietta and her two sisters were kidnapped from their courtesan mother, Aphrodite and left on the door of Lady Greentree who took them in and raised them as her own. When they are reunited with their real mother years later, Marietta realized she admired Aprodite and would like to be more like her. Marietta is ruined at age 17 by a bounder who promised to marry her but dumped her after taking her virtue. Four years later,convinced that she can never marry, Marietta decides to become a courtesan like her natural mother. When she approaches Aphrodite for help, she tells Marietta that if she can seduce a nobleman, Max Valland-Lord Roseby, Aphrodite will help her become a courtesan.
Max Valland is also surrounded by scandal, he was disinherited after a letter was found that implied he was a bastard. Max meets and is instantly attracted to Marietta. When he is attacked and left for dead, Marietta nurses him back to health and then asks him to help her learn the art of seduction as payment for her help. Max is enchanted, he wants Marietta and she is offering him the perfect oppurtunity. However, he knows he does not want her to become a courtesan, he wants her for himself and plans on making her fall in love with him. Marietta has promised never to fall in love, it is the very first rule of being a courtesan. She has feelings for Max, but knows she can stop before falling in love, right?
This is an amusing story, but it just seems it could have been a little more exciting....Marietta is a little ding batty at times and Max is a little too passive at times. I wish he would have stood up to his family more. However, I still loved the story. I think it just needed a little more depth and tweaking, but still good enough for four stars. Not a bad book at all.
A wonderful Victorian set romance!!.......2006-04-22
This book is actually the second in the series about the Greentree sisters, but I've only read this one and had no problem keeping everyone straight.
It tells the story of Marietta Greentree, daughter of a famous London courtesan, who after a failed love affair and subsequent scandal, decides to follow in her mother's footsteps. Horrified, her mother decides she must successfully seduce the most handsome and ineligible bachelor in all of London, Max Valland. Her mother knows Marietta is attracted to the disinherited former Lord Roseby and hopes to stop her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. So, she sets "tasks" before Marietta under the guise they are to prove her capable of being a courtesan. Marietta agrees. She likes Max and eagerly looks forward to him teaching her all about desire and the rules of passion. But as these tasks progress from learning how to kiss, to wearing barely there outfits, to meeting in a strange place and perfoming duties in public--she realizes she's living in a fantasy world when it comes to the realities of being a courtesan. That and somehow, somewhere along the way, she's done something a courtesan is never supposed to do...lost her heart.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! There are more than a few laugh out loud moments during Marietta's tasks. All of the characters are well written, witty and rather charming. The chemistry and sexual tension between Max and Marietta leaps off the page and their individual story lines proved unique and refreshing.

This one indeed sizzled and I love sizzle! Max began as a brooding , depressed disinherited duke's son and by chance he meets the very beautiful Marietta, in a hot air balloon ride. She is the daughter of Aphrodite, London's leading courtesean. Since Marietta had been ruined at a young age by a scoundrel she believed no man of value would ever want her. Each time she meets Max, there is something about his brooding manner though that causes her to be drawn to him. Outside of Aprhodite's brothel he is struck down and almost killed. Marietta helps bring him back to life. Marietta's plan for her life is to become a courtesean, like her mother. She feels she is ruined, so why not protect herself from the hurt of ever letting any man too close to hurt her again. Max believes this is the wrong life for Marietta, so he agrees to train her in the ways of passion, in order to prove she is not cut out for life in a brothel. Well the sizzle indeed begins at this point - and wow - there are some great love scenes throughout the rest of this book. Max, truly feels the only thing in his life worth anything is now Marietta. He has a paultry estate on the Cornish coast he intends to retreat to and somehow etch out a life, now that he has been disinherited by his father. Of course Max's life still seems to be indanger from someone. This troubles Marietta as she helps to trap the guilty person. There is also the problem of whether Max is in fact the Duke's real son or not? The danger for Max and the inheritance are both good mysteries to the love story developing between Max and Marietta. Marietta just somehow needs to deal with whether she can allow her heart to feel again, and risk being hurt. This is a great story between two people that in different ways seem to have lost hope and together they find that they give each other love, hope and a future! Very well written love story!

Woman, thou art Second.......2007-09-19
If you don't believe that women are secondary receivers and helpers to men without specific purposes of our own, this book isn't for you. I originally thought this book was full of testimonies from various couples, but it's half of Elliot's recounting of her own courtship and half her own limited views of womanhood.
It's not the idea that women shouldn't do the pursuing in a relationship that bothers me, so much as Elliot's faulty attempt to tie it in with the erroneous belief that women are receivers in just about every situation! It amazes me how she manages to do this: one minute I'm hearing about how many modern women are too aggressive in relationships (which they can be) and the next I'm wading through Puritanical nonsense about how female society leaders are unnatural! Elliot polished this off with the ridiculous statement that matriarchal societies are nothing but legend. I wish people would research their subjective ideas before making erroneous statements; I have heard of many matriarchal tribes, and Elliot's assertion that such female leaders are unnatural is insulting as well as untrue. Indeed, her entire chapter on this subject is called "The Mess we've Made", lamenting over how women have dared to initiate things in the world instead of letting men do all the work. And her comment that "until recently, women leading and men following was considered unnatural"? Only to those of you complimentarians who are stuck in the past, Elliot. Most people in society now know that leaders are to be chosen based on what's in their minds and not between their legs; maybe one day you'll stop blissfully ignoring the presence of strong women (both in past and present) and will acknowledge this yourself.
At one point, Elliot tells of a time in which she invited four men over for dinner and asked them all what they wanted from women. It didn't surprise me a bit that one of the dopes said, "If the woman's smart, she'll know her place is submission" and that more than one of them called a woman asking them out "Shocking. A turnoff". It also didn't surpise me that Elliot took these four men's opinions and tried to pass them off as what most men would want. (Sure that's what most men want, if you're living in a conservative circle with little fresh air; thank God these men are in a minority!) What DID surprise me, even after my experience with Elliot's views, was her comparison of these men's insecure descriptions of a woman asking a man out to what Eve did! Elliot claims Eve's sin was taking the initiative by offering Adam the apple and, by doing this, she damaged God's design! Funny how only people of Elliot's mindset see this as the main problem with the Eden incident. Leave it to people like that to twist Adam and Eve's sin in an attempt to turn it into yet another story of what happens when good submissive girls go bad and try to lead for a change. I will say this is the first time, though, that I've ever heard someone describe the action of offering a man fruit as a dominant thing.
Granted, some women CAN be too dominant. As Elliot says, this is usually because we have such a hard time doing nothing. However, even I wasn't expecting the rather horrifying story that Elliot shared about a woman who would probably fit every man's description of a nightmare. I was expecting Elliot to describe a liberal feminist. Instead, she described a Christian woman who prayed constantly, wanted to be a missionary..and told a man she knew that God told her they were going to get married! I'm not sure who was more horrified, me upon reading this or Elliot when she heard it personally. Naturally, when the woman first told her what God said, Elliot advised her to not tell the man anything until he heard from God too. The ditz responded by saying, "Oh no, I ran home and called him right away! I just wanted him to understand that this was God's will". Elliot ended this story with the wry words "That man has my sympathy", and I have to say I admired her incredible patience. If it had been me, I would have smacked the woman and asked her what the devil she was thinking. It's fascinating to me that the single most aggressive woman I've ever heard of is not a feminist, but a Christian who fits the term "passive aggressive" better than anyone I've ever heard of. I wish Elliot had given a follow-up on those events. Still, you've got to admit that most women aren't that, well, unstable. This is why I like the modern allowance of women to simply ask guys out for coffee or what have you; I hardly think any reasonable man would find that as repulsive as Elliot's four neurotic male friends. (I wish that it had been one of those friends who was stuck with the woman in that story. It would served them right, and I would have laughed my socks off)
You might appreciate this book for the sweet (and very unusual) courtship tale about Elisabeth and Jim. Just please don't buy her views of manhood and womanhood as Gospel. The Bible is for all times; the practices in this book are not.
Important for those who think dating is a write..........2007-09-05
It was about three years ago when I began contemplating whether or not it was right to date or kiss people (before marriage). I hadn't read any books on dating or relationships let alone Christian ones. I was beginning to walk in obedience to the Lord, and the first thing he wanted surrendured was my love life. It wasn't a foreign concept to me, but still he led me to this very book "passion and Purity" by Elizabeth Elliot (The former wife of missionary Jim Elliot).
This book is very personal. It includes letters that Jim Elliot wrote, as well as Elizabeth's own diary entries from the time that Jim and Elizabeth were cinsidering courtship. It is not a picture perfect romance, there are hurts and mistakes. However, you should be able to learn from their own mistakes and at times inability to be obedient to God. Let it be a lesson and a reminder to you that God does want out love life. He wants our thoughts of marriage, family, and committment to someone else besides him.
This is a book about learning to put God first. This gives concrete examples of how we sometimes put God on the back-burner to pursue our own ideal of a partner. In the end we find that that when Jim and Elizabeth learned to surrendur their lives to Christ, he led them together, even though Jim only lived five years to enjoy it before he died at the hands of the Auca indians.
If you are struggling with remaining pure, and whether or not marriage is right for you, or whether or not it is possible to remain single and Holy, than please read "Passion and Purity" by Elizabeth Elliot today. You were not led to this very page for no reason, God led you here for a reason, pick up this bok today!!!!

This book is biblically based and excellent. Before I read it, I had already made up my mind to stay pure until marriage. Elisabeth Elliot's book re-enforced the importance of that decision and challenged me to live selflessly each day. I'm sad that several people have written negative reviews--if you're a Christian and believe the Bible is truth, you will love this book. I highly recommend it.

If you are dating or engaged, please read this book. At church we kept hearing how great this book was because there was a class for engaged couples that was going through this book together. I purchased it after we were married and I still enjoyed it and learned. My husband and I recommend this book.
A very enlightening book.......2007-03-08
This is not another "don't have sex until you get married" book. During all the pages, Elisabeth Elliot explains God's point of view concerning love life through her own love story with Jim Elliot, her first husband. It has some concepts, but they are deeply explained in a very simple and beautiful way, and of course it makes the reader to think about when he/she has done it right and when not.
It's very helpful to get inside your heart, your intentions with one person or another, to see and maybe even judge your past and encourage you to take what God has to offer -no matter at what cost. I definitely recommend this book!

If you think that Elizabeth Elliot's standards are archaic and outdated (As she herself seems to imply people think they are), then read this book. "Quest for Love" will give clear examples of what it means to surrendur your love life to Christ. It is not about a strict set of "rules" and guidelines, but rather it is about a fluid relationship with Jesus Christ based upon the Bible.
One of my favorite stories was about the man who went to China as a missionary, but before he did he kept pursuing different women that he "felt" were the perfect match for him. It was wasn't until he was surrenduring his life to God and living in obedience by being a missionary to China, did he meet the woman who would become his wife. The other tale in here that I enjoyed was about God testing one man's patience and concept of God's timing. He was "ready" to get married when he was 22, but God kept saying no. He would date and try to find someone, but it didn't work. Finally he began handing it over to the Lord, and ten years later he met the woman who would be his wife, who was ten years younger than him!!! When he thought he was ready to get married, well, his wife wasn't!
I loved this book because through the stories and Elliot's narration, she teaches that singleness is a gift from God. We should not view it as a curse whether we are called to singleness for a life-time or for a season, but rather as an opportunity to grow in the Lord and into our God-given gifts. So, that we will not live to get married, but live in Christ. It is a beautiful thing to see a young or old man or woman surrenduring their life to Christ. Do not begrudge your state if you are single, marriage isn't a magic happiness pill, but harder work than you will ever bargain for. Enjoy your singleness and solitude while you have it. That is what this book is about, enjoying Christ in singleness so that if we marry, we can enjoy him in that too.

A Textbook This is Not.......2002-09-18
If you're looking for a book about Elisabeth Elliot's personal quest for love, then this text is not what you are looking for. Quest for love is a compilation of stories and excerpts about those who are now in the Faith who have searched for love at some point in the breadth of their lives. Not all the stories end happily in a romantic sense, and not all of them are model relationships. They are all real however, and Elliot leaves us with a bit of observation and application at the end of every chapter.
If you've read my other review under the book Passion and Purity, then you know that I really do enjoy reading about other peoples' lives. I sincerely want to stress the fact that the examples given to us in this book are not all great examples of what a godly relationship ought to be. In my opinion, Elisabeth Elliot has done a great job in giving us glimpses in not-so-exemplary relationships so that we might learn from other peoples mistakes. What you see here is a lot of life testimony regarding the pain and personal anguish that results in a broken world through the means of human relationships.
Elisabeth Elliot puts forth challenging questions and the occasional quotation of scripture. She offers insightful observations of what may or may not have been done correctly in a relationship. She also offers insight into situations in life that may not result in relationships at all. It's a pretty well rounded book, and it doesn't glamourize Christian relationships, nor does it assume that all Christian relationships are okay. You see some very destructive and painful occurences in here, and it is absolutely worth the read.
I guess the only reason that I gave the book four stars is because I wish that there were more letters from those who God chose to remain single. Love doesn't always have to be relegated to human relationships as the triune God is a very lovable and relational person. I'd give this book a 4.5 if I could, but we live in a broken world, so nothing is ever perfect;-).

This book is great for helping you find real stories of encouragement with Letting God be your Guide. This will help you see that you should let your relationships into Gods hands and let him be the only one to guide you into the RIGHT relationship for you.
Inspiring follow-up to Passion and Purity.......2001-12-29
After reading "Passion and Purity" I couldn't wait to read her follow-up "Quest for Love." It was better than I expected. Her stories are touching and real. He advice is honest and straight forward. She approaches everything from a Biblical persepective, presenting undeniable truths. If you haven't read "Passion and Purity," I recommend that one first. "Quest for Love" is a fantastic book that you won't want to put down!

If you liked Elisabeth Elliot's "Passion and Purity," the earlier book on singleness, you'll like "Quest for Love." Passion and Purity is about Elisabeth Elliot's incredible romance with a man she loved for five years before he asked her to marry him.
"Quest for Love" is based on the same principles, but tells the success stories of other happy couples.

I just received my copy of Passion Rules! and I had to immediately sit down and read it. Of course the next thing I had to do was recommend it to everyone :) This book covers many of the basics in starting up a business and also points out some of the pitfalls that might befall someone who is going into business for themselves. This book is easy to read, clearly written, and very entertaining. I think it is a must-have for any woman thinking about going into business.
