John Harvey's ninth book about British police investigator Charlie Resnick, who runs the homicide bureau in a city very much like Nottingham, doesn't immediately punch you in the stomach the way previous entries did. Instead, Still Waters offers several smaller stories ticking along at the same time. But the growing ranks of Resnick fans should find plenty to enjoy, including Charlie's delight in jazz and food (breakfasts supplant his legendary sandwich creations this time out). First-timers should certainly recognize the force and beauty of Resnick's gently sarcastic humanity as he pursues a friendly neighborhood art thief and tries to link the killing of an abused woman with a series of bodies found in local canals. Owl Books published Harvey's first two Resnick novels--Lonely Hearts and Rough Treatment--as well as 1996's stunning Easy Meat as handsome paperbacks.

Praise from an ardent fan.......2006-08-02
I love the Charlie Resnick series! I discovered them years ago after a reviewer in the Chicago Tribune talked about Harvey's insights into great jazz artists. I completey agree,in fact I have discovered several musicians that have rapidly become some of my favorite artists (Lester Young, Ben Webster). But I also enjoy Harvey's depiction of a man at odds with contemporary society. Charlie Resnick is such a likeable character that my only complaint is that the series has ended.
Any and all of the Resnick books work as stand alone well written and exciting mysteries, but I would suggest starting from the begining and reading them all. The arch of character development in many of the ancillary characters is quite rewarding.
Fine for fans, possibly confusing for others.......2000-10-23
There are inherent perils in writing a series of novels based on the same set of characters. Is the author simply rehashing the same theme over and over again? Are the characters becoming too predictable? Will readers new to the series understand what is going on, or will they feel excluded from the author's world for not begining at the first novel? Is there any reason left to warrant delving into the characters' lives yet again?
These are pitfalls common to almost all authors. The 'Burke' stories of Andrew Vachss are now constantly fighting self-parody. Douglas Adams' HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE series arguably had no reason to continue after the third installment. Joseph Heller destroyed his beloved CATCH-22 characters with the near-wretched CLOSING TIME. And Tom Clancy's 'Jack Ryan' stories have become far less about Ryan, and more about Clancy's political views.
John Harvey's 'Charlie Resnick' series of British police procedurals are also fighting these traps. While Harvey has consistently written taut, elegant meditations on the evils that society can fall victim to (see EASY MEAT), there remains the danger that he may alienate new readers who are not intimately familiar with Resnick's ways. STILL WATERS is a finely written story, but newcomers to Resnick's universe may find themselves confused.
STILL WATERS finds Resnick, the resourceful British police officer, in a situation immediately identifiable to all. He is rather anxious over his burgeoning relationship with English teacher Hannah, and also has job security issues over an ignored promotion possibility. But while his overall routine may to similar to many, Harvey manages to inject new life into the familiar with Resnick's personal indentification with the seedier aspects of humanity. But while Resnick may attempt to keep his professional and personal lives seperate, the murder of one of Hannah's friends brings his worlds together.
Harvey's novels have, as their main focus, the view that evil is just around the corner in all our lives. In STILL WATERS, it is spousal abuse that receives the brunt of Harvey's attention. Seemingly happy couples are revealed to exist in relationships of pain and suffering.
Harvey deals with this theme quite effectively, from many viewpoints. He also refuses to serve as judge to his characters, presenting them as flawed examples of humanity, not incarnations of evil. Harvey also never rules out the concept of redemption, however rare that commodity may be.
But as STILL WATERS is one novel of many, Harvey has other issues to deal with as well. There is Lynn Kellogg, a fellow officer who would rather transfer out than deal with her past relationship with Resnick. There is Mark Divine, a police officer who was raped in a previous novel, and has become increasingly violent. There is Carl Vincent, a homosexual officer in a profession not known for tolerance. Harvey manages to touch on all of their lives, but some of it seems unnecessary. A new reader may be confused by characters who seem to be integral elements of the plot, yet never appear again. At times, STILL WATERS resembles a novel between novels, an opportunity to catch up on the lives of the characters, but not an especially interesting story in and of itself.
Possibly because of this, STILL WATERS is not an altogether successful novel. Perhaps Harvey should have centred solely on the murder of Hannah's friend, and its immediate effects on Resnick's life. Harvey gives too much information on other areas to advance this plot. There is also a subplot involving art theft that never adequately fits into the whole, with a resolution that feels rushed and unfinished.
But Harvey is still a fine writer. His individual scenes of Resnick's personal life with Hannah are touching and realistic, and his scenes involving the spousal abuse are chilling. And Resnick is a terrific literary character, a flawed and deeply troubled man who can always be counted on to find the appropriate jazz analogy. STILL WATERS is worth reading, but it is more effective for the already-initiated than the reader who is discovering Harvey for the first time.
Solid Ninth Entry in Series.......1999-08-25
Very solid ninth entry effectively mixes Charlie Resnick's ever-deepening relationship with schoolteacher Hannah and the dissapearance of her friend Jane. This is against a backdrop of the formation of a new Serious Crimes Unit headed by an ambitious high-flying female which threatens to take over Charlie's turf. Less effective is the subplot tying together a few formerly seen characters and an art forgery ring.
Another excellent work by a sterling British writer.......1997-10-05
When the battered corpse of a mid-twenties woman is found floating in a canal, the police conclude that a serial killer is one the loose because of a nebulous link to other canal murders. However, a second body is soon found. This time the victim is Jane Peterson, a close friend of Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick's lover, Hannah. The police think that Jane is the latest victim of the serial killer. Neither case falls under the jurisdiction of Charlie since serial killer investigations are worked on by the Serious Crime Unit.
However, Hannah is convinced that Jane's death was caused by her physically abusive spouse, Alex. Hannah convinces Charlie to look into her girl friend's death. Meanwhile, other things swirl around Charlie. A junior officer, Lynn Kellogg has applied for a transfer and is pushing Charlie to make it happen. Other crime, such as an art theft, requires Charlie's investigative talent. With all this going on, Charlie is going to find it difficult to properly investigate what happened to Jane.
The Charlie Resnick series are some of the best British police procedurals on the market today. The current entry, STILL WATER, is a well written detective novel that showcase John Harvey's tremendous talent. Though the story line is quite good, it is not at the upper echelon of the previous novels because too much is left open (perhaps for the next book). Still, that leaves the tale better than 99.9% of the police procedural in book stores on sale today. Several of the Resnick novels are about to go paperback and are worth buying by fans of the sub-genre.

Gregg Easterbrook says the ideal readers of Beside Still Waters: Searching for Meaning in an Age of Doubt are "those who seek the spiritual center--whose hearts are open to higher purpose but whose heads are aware of the many valid objections." To these readers, Easterbrook offers the gift of his contemplative, witty, well-informed essays on questions such as "whether the wars and repressions staged in the name of religion invalidate the ideals that arise from faith; whether our increasing knowledge of history demonstrates spiritual thought to have begun in mythology or superstition; [and] whether faith is on balance an advantageous force for society." Easterbrook is a reporter, not a religion expert, but he's managed to float an extraordinary amount of erudition on his fluid journalistic style. Because his learning is passionate rather than professional, he's able to explore his questions with openness and zeal. Beside Still Waters concludes with a startlingly scriptural refutation of God's omnipotence and a strong, smart argument that monotheism is inherently opposed to rigid denominationalism. Yet with equal strength and good sense, he defends the value of denominations. Maybe you're a good Christian, or a good Jew, or a good atheist. The balanced, vigorous, loving thoughts contained in Beside Still Waters can help you become something better than all of those, and necessary for being any of them--a good person. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
"Fascinating, elegant . . . [Easterbrook] invests the timeless question of life's meaning with distinctly contemporary pertinence."--George Will, Newsweek
Yes, says Gregg Easterbrook in this provocative and probing new book. In the tradition of Jack Miles's God A Biography and the work of Karen Armstrong, Beside Still Waters ponders the question "Is there anything left to believe in?" Gregg Easterbrook persuasively argues that rationality and outright doubt are inevitable and indeed vital elements of spiritual faith. Other new and important ideas about spiritual thought include the challenging observation that the Bible never actually proclaims God omnipotent -- a concept, Easterbrook suggests, that arose through the sociology and politics of religion, nor Scripture. Bucking the current trend to undermine the Bible's historical value, he affirms that it is neither simple myth nor mere literature, but rather it records many genuine events that can be seen to chart a spiritual journey not only of man but also of God.
A thought-provoking book for anyone who believes that true faith can and should accommodate sincere doubt, Beside Still Waters addresses some of the central spiritual issues of a profoundly skeptical age.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2003-08-12
Having become aware of Gregg Easterbrook through his writing on, of all places, espn.com, I looked forward to reading this book for two reasons. First and foremost, it seemed perfectly suited to me, based on the editorial review comment, "those who seek the spiritual center--whose hearts are open to higher purpose but whose heads are aware of the many valid objections." Perfect. Second, I have found Easterbrook to be a good read in forums as diverse as the aforementioned espn.com and in the National Review, for which he is a senior editor.
However I was very disappointed in this book. I had hoped to learn about a way to "bootstrap" faith in this overtly secular world. What I found was a series of old arguments, mostly based on the argument from design. The argument from design, if you are not familiar with it, proposes that God must exist since we are so incredibly well-suited to our environment. This ignores the obvious issue that we evolved in our environment, so clearly are well-suited to it. We evolved to fit the environment; the environment was not created to suit us.
So I got little out of this volume. I'll continue to read Easterbrook on espn.com, but I'll skip his spiritual musings in the future.
Provocative and intriguing.......2001-11-19
Written in a conversational, "non-preachy" style, this book explores the question of what it means to have faith (or to look for a reason to believe) in the modern world. The author limits himself to the Judeo-Christian tradition, exploring obstacles to belief that may arise from the more problematic parts of the Bible -- particularly God's wrathful "smiting" of his enemies (and even, sometimes, his friends). The heart of the book is an extended discussion of the possibility of an evolving God who is neither all-knowing nor all-powerful. Much of this material parallels Jack Miles's GOD: A BIOGRAPHY (written, apparently, at around the same time), though Easterbook's treatment is more concise and focused, and covers the New Testament along with the Old. The development of God from vengeful warrior-king to peaceful redeemer is certainly a story of great interest, although one could (perhaps more plausibly) see it as a record of the moral improvement of human beings whose writings reflect God in their own image. (Edith Hamilton's excellent SPOKESMEN FOR GOD, out of print but worth finding, presents the issue from this perspective.) Easterbrook's thesis is provocative, and he states it in a clear, readable style, with wit and subtlety. A worthwhile book that leaves you feeling that you've just had an extended philosophical conversation with an intelligent and sympathetic friend.
From Raging Storm to Pacific Stillness.......2000-05-22
This book is a spiritual journey. It begins with some of the many valid reasons for questioning Faith, including the history of thoughts and concepts, the current state of scientific knowledge about how the Universe was created. It continues on into what the Bible says and what it does NOT say about some important Faith concepts which we generally assume are supported in the Bible because they are repeated so often today, but were actually created by people for the convenience and sanctioning of church and state leaders politics and power.
It continues on to show how God evolved in relating to humans from the Genesis through the early and middle Old Testament where God was very jealous of other gods, greatly interested in religious rituals, and regularly used miracles to accomplish God's work, much of which was savage in killing of thousands of people, including even appearing in and leading battles for the Nation of Israel. (This is NOT a pretty story, but it is the HIStory of the same God we worship and adore today for unbounded love for each of us.) In the late Old Testament, culminating in the New Testament, God, and Jesus, as God's voice on Earth, evolved to using only healing miracles and messages of God's love and Need for love from all people.
Not entirely persuasive, but...........2000-02-10
A somewhat selective reading of the Bible that perhaps doesn't properly explain the import of some of the passages cited, this book is nevertheless fascinating and well written. Most important for me as a reader was Easterbrook's enthusiasm for his subject and his intelligent and moving description of what is so compelling about Jesus. So, although I can't agree that it makes sense to say that "God is slooowww ...." I read the book in only a few nights, learnt a lot and came away with plenty of questions about a lot of received wisdom. For all of which I am thankful...
Nothing new, but very refreshing.......1999-10-15
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who like myself has always had an urge to believe that there was a God and that life is not as meaningless as many modern scientists seem to think it is but are unable to believe in the God presented in most conservative and even mainline protestant churches. Although the author doesn't elude to it in the title, this book is definitely written from a very Christian(liberal Christian) perspective, which is what I was looking for. Especially of interest to me was Easterbrooks proposed explanations for some of the appauling events in the Old Testament that had always been a stumbling block to my belief in Christianity. Also facinating was the possibilities he raised regarding the omnipotence of God. Of course there is probably nothing in this book that could not be found in other volumes by other authors but I quite liked the way that Gregg Easterbrook put it all together and made it very accesible. Although I don't quite agree with all of the authors propositions I would definitely recommend this book highly.

A wonderful blessing.......2003-12-14
As Charles Haddon Spurgeon preached he often looked into the eyes of hurting and bewildered parishioner and responded with words of comfort. Spurgeon's words are the words of this book. These pasages are characterized by Spurgeon's rare ability to put deep truths into simple language with rich. warm, spiritual tones. Spurgeon's words reach across the years and speak to today's hurting, struggling, bewildered, and depressed people. His answers are still valid.
If you are facing difficulties, this book is for you.

not for acrylic painters.......2007-07-18
Very good instructions but I searched for acrylic books and did not check close enough as acrylics are mentioned but this book is strictly for oil painters. Also, no templates.

Robert Warren has outdone himself in composing this wonderful instructional book on oil painting-it is very well explained-this book is for intermediate to advance skill level.
Book Description
For both beginning and advanced painters, water can be one of the most popular but least understood of elements. In this instructive guide, author and artist E. John Robinson shows the secrets of painting water, its special properties, and the limitless ways it can be used in paintings of all mediums.
Readers will discover how to use water to convey mood, to capture the effects of wet streets and mud puddles, and to portray fog, ice, and water's reflective qualities. They'll also learn how to paint creeks and lakes, rivers and waterfalls, harbors and the ocean, weaving sunlight and shadow into all their water scenes to create works that flow with life.
Customer Reviews:
Where's the water??.......2006-10-18
The title of this review says it all. As for 'all mediums' mostly are watercolor. So, if you are into watercolor and not wanting to learn how to paint water, which what water is in there is terrible, then by all means purchase it. Personally, I sent it back as no help to me.
Robinson is the go-to person for painting water.......2006-06-19
E. John Robinson is a well known California Seascape artist that works with both oils and watercolor. In his "Painting All Aspects of Water," Robinson shares his observations and techniques gained over his many years of study and painting water.
Robinson begins with a discourse on the properties of water and the creation of mood then applies these lessons to painting every possible use of water - wet ground, puddles, rivers, waterfalls, surf, and much more.
This is an excellent book for not only the novice but also for those who are more experienced and need that little extra from a master.
Robinson is the go-to person, whether oils or watercolor, to inspire you in making your water scenes mystical and magical.
Wonderful, but not as good as the last 2 books!.......2004-06-27
If you are looking for the same level of instruction as in the prior E. John books, you won't find it. The pictures are beautiful but no major step by step process--more a global overview. I pre-ordered this book months ago, as I think E. John is a phenominal painter and seems so spiritually attuned and connected with the ocean. I was a little disappointed with this edition, but being an admirer of E. John Robinson's, I would have purchased it anyway.

Terrific stories!.......2007-09-06
I have owned this book for four months and have already read it twice. It is full of everything a Christian romance should contain.
I have to give Bateman great praise for her novella collection. As a reader of heatsong presents and the barbour novella collections, I have many books to compare this to.
The biggest challenge with this type of book is that the writer is given only 130(ish) pages in which to develop characters and romance. It is difficult to manage and keep it believable. Bateman accomplishes this and much much more. She is able to create realistic, likeable characters, develop a romance that doesn't catch the reader totally off guard, and manages to weave in an element of intrigue or adventure.
This is a collection of wonderfully inspiring, exciting, hope-filled stories that will keep the reader wanting more with every turned page. Tracey Bateman- She has a gift for historical fiction and I hope to continue seeing her books around.
Excellent Book.......2007-09-01
With each book, Tracey Bateman's writing seems to get better. I can't wait to read the next book she publishes.
Still on my mind...........2007-07-20
I love both historical fiction and Christian fiction and this book (set of three stories) has stayed with me the last few days since I finished the last heart-wrenching story of the Riley family. I loved these stories so much that even though I have been a member of Amazon Prime for a long time, I have never taken the time to write a review. I highly recommend this book, and if you want more by the author I also LOVED the Claire series by Tracey Bateman. You can't go wrong here!
Oregon Brides.......2007-05-08
This is another excellent boook by Tracey Bateman. I like her Christian writing.

Loaded with inspiration and techniques.......2002-02-16
I really enjoyed the focus of this book on painting water. Water is such an essential element of so many landscapes, it was really nice to read a book devoted to it, and not just a sub-chapter.
I also really enjoyed the numerous color reproductions of paintings throughout the book which were well-chosen and beautiful to look at.
Bringing water to life !.......2000-07-12
It's always a burning desire to capture as close the minute details in a scenary picture or the scenery itself. Water often proved to be the hardest to express its formless self.
This book discussed in details the interpretation of water features using the different media like oil, pastel, water colour. All along, it had been thought that watercolour produces the best details with depth. But the book shows that other media can achieve similar effects as well.
Many examples are discussed in step-by-step approach and illuatsated in sequences to teach about the built-up, so it's a simplified step to learning. Many medium are explore adding to the variety of expression that beginners can explore.
Well formatted and recommended for beginners and intermediate painters.
Excellent Reference Book.......1999-12-30
This book offers great projects in watercolor, oil, pastel and mixed media with lots of finished work and step by step examples. It has improved the impression of "water" in my paintings remarkably.

Book Description
“As perfect as the beads of a rosary.”
–Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street
“Fresh, magical, beautiful, evocative” says Lisa See, about this wonderful first novel by Alex Espinoza. Still Water Saints chronicles a momentous year in the life of Agua Mansa, a largely Latino town beyond the fringes of Los Angeles and home to the Botánica Oshún, where people come seeking charms, herbs, and candles. Above all, they seek the guidance of Perla Portillo, the shop’s owner. Perla has served the community for years, arming her clients with the tools to overcome all manner of crises, large and small. There is Juan, a man coming to terms with the death of his father; Nancy, a recently married schoolteacher; Shawn, an addict looking for peace in his chaotic life; and Rosa, a teenager trying to lose weight and find herself. But when a customer with a troubled and mysterious past arrives, Perla struggles to help and must confront both her unfulfilled hopes and doubts about her place in a rapidly changing world.
Imaginative, inspiring, lyrical, and beautifully written, Still Water Saints evokes the unpredictability of life and the resilience of the spirit through the journeys of the people of Agua Mansa, and especially of the one woman at the center of it all. Theirs are stories of faith and betrayal, love and loss, the bonds of family and community, and the constancy of change.

Excellent.......2007-07-13
I picked this book up while on a trip to Santa Barbara. When I saw the cover and the title it drew me in. I then read the authors bio and I discovered that he was from La Puente. La Puente is my city a place like Agua Mansa with characters and people from all paths of life that often are missing from literature. I was pleasantly surprise to see these characters brought to life through their everyday mishaps and ritualistic ways by Alex Espinoza. This book is a must read. The author does a great job of taking the reader through a roller coaster of emotions through the spiritual and challenging world of its characters.
Fantastic New Voice!.......2007-05-21
Gripping. A tantalizing view into a world I knew nothing about. Alex Espinoza made me see the world differently. A welcomed new literal author to a world filled with commercialism. I want to go back to Agua Mansa. I wanted to stay but there was no more. I spoke to the author; he's humble and grateful about filling my world with awe. His answer, "Thank you so much for the kind words regarding my book; it is a big compliment when people react the way you do."
This novel's not for the faint of heart; it is filled with elements that may shock you, but the way Alex raps the characters in a mantra of words you swear they are real folks, everyday people you knew nothing about, peppered with delightful insights into quirky lives not everyone's privileged to see.
The Botánica Oshún's a place I want to visit. Teaming with worldly and unworldly oddities. The connection to the unworldly is always around us but we do not see it. Most of us walk this Earth in a fog, neglecting to fan the watery veil to see beyond. If I was a believer before, this cements my pathetic insight to something beyond biological--we've all experienced the warnings, the déjà vu, the "oh had I done it this way," the thought of someone close and the phone rings and it's them on the other end. Confess, we've all been touched by the supernatural and we were all dismissive, calling it `weird'. I was half way through, went to the market and then bought a candle. I lit it. It stayed lit until I finished the book.
Every chapter took me into a different direction--a different life with a different viewpoint. He (Alex) switches from third person to first with such ease that it threw me the first few chapters. Then I understood why he did it. His motives were to make the reader become the character; to feel, taste, hear, smell the things that character did. I understood for the first time --if only briefly--what it was like to be a woman, a man, a junky, a girl, a transgender, a boy lost in a world desperate to get out of only to find there were more traps ahead. These traps that ensnare without conjecture, that thrive on repeatedly drowning those who are pure of heart and those who are not. I felt like a slave, yet I also felt like an artist, a caregiver, a thief, a prostitute, a mere mortal denied the right to know more about the spiritual: A believer that could see but was blind to his/her surroundings. I dare not say more for fear a curse may fall upon me. I better go buy another candle.
Thanks Alex for the ride. I'm waiting for your next novel. And if you find it in your heart to go back to Agua Mansa, take me with you. Please.
A Work of Art.......2007-04-09
Alex Espinoza is a true literary genius. Still Water Saints is an inspiring and thought provoking masterpiece. Highly recommended.
