A Lady's Scorn
Wrongly branded a spy, the dark and handsome Viking lord Selig Haardrad suffered greatly in the dungeons of Lady Erika of Gronwood. And as he hung in chains, his magnificent body wracked with pain and fever, one thought sustained him: revenge!
A Viking's Vengence
Now Destiny's great wheel has turned--and Selig's exquisite, hone-haired tormentor has been delivered into the Norseman's hands. Now it is Selig who is the master, bound and determined to break the proud spirit of his captive "ice queen" and to conquer her with passion's sword -- never dreaming that his own heart will be vanquished by sensuous desire. . .and victorious love.

Slow and Plodding.......2006-08-15
I was given this book at the beach by my friend and had not read the previous two. In fact didn't know there even were other stories until a few chapters into this one. Maybe if I'd read the previous two I would've cared more about Selig and Erika.
However, if you are a big J.L. fan make sure you read the previous two before this one. If you don't you may find it as I did. Sloooooooowwwww and a bit dull. I didn't care for either of the characters and although all romance fans are guarunteed a happy ending Selig and Erika's personalities made their actions and motivations in the book so foregone that it was a trial to finish it out.
Seems like Selig was a bit of a fan fav. for this trilogy and it's a shame that more wasn't made of his story.
Loved it..........2006-07-22
Well, if you read my other reviews, they're short and to the point. I love all of J.L.'s works so far, and this doesn't fail me. An excellent read.
GREAT!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-21
I love this one! I've read the others and i think this one is my favorite. It started a little slow but other than that it was so fantastic. I stayed up until 1:30 this morning to read it! I think the other reviewers pretty much summed up the whole story, but i just wanted to say if you liked the others in the Viking triology you won't be disappointed. Great job Johanna!!!
Not What I Expected.......2005-02-16
I could not wait to read Selig's story but what a disappointment it was. The book was more of a family reunion than a story about Selig and Erika. Although I enjoyed hearing about the rest of the family his story did not stand alone. I thought a couple of chapters could have been eliminated. The first two books in the Viking series I highly recommend they are excellent reads. Find this one at your local library.
Not as good as the first two, but still entertaining.......2004-12-21
This is the story of Garrick and Brenna's first child, Selig the Blessed, who we remember as the stillborn child who was "raised" from the dead in Fires of Winter and as the brother who also came back from the dead in Hearts Aflame. Now in this book, Johanna Lindsey has decided to put his life in danger once more, when he was ambushed on the way to East Anglia on a mission for King Alfred. Although he survives this, he ends up being mistaken for a spy and taken as a prisoner by Lady Erika of Gronwood, where he was nearly lashed to death. When his sister Kristen comes to his rescue, he asks her to take Erika as a hostage in order to exact his revenge.
Once again, we see the closeness of the family. We are also reminded of how dangerous Kristen could be when Erika incurs the wrath of her anger. If there is one family you wouldn't want to mess with, they're one of them - if you mess with one of them, you have to face the rest of the family.
Now unlike the heroines of the first two books, Erika came across as too timid. Although I didn't expect her to be as spirited as Brenna and Kristen, I wish that she had a bit more fire in her. Sure she felt guilty, but she didn't even try her hardest to defend herself when she was chained. As for Selig, too much emphasis was given on his unbelievably good looks, his pain and recovery, yet not much depth was given to his character. And in comparison with the first two books, the romance between Erika and Selig isn't as well developed. I didn't find the interaction as exciting. The author could have fleshed out the romance part a bit more in my opinion.
But if you have read the first two books, this would still be an entertaining read. For me, the highlight of the book is not so much the romance, but the involvement of Garrick and Brenna, Royce and Kristen and their friends and family.
Book Description
In the spring of 1974, Second Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese army made world headlines when he emerged from the Philippine jungle after a thirty-year ordeal. Hunted in turn by American troops, the Philippine police, hostile islanders, and successive Japanese search parties, Onoda had skillfully outmaneuvered all his pursuers, convinced that World War II was still being fought and that one day his fellow soldiers would return victorious. This account of those years is an epic tale of the will to survive that offers a rare glimpse of man's invincible spirit, resourcefulness, and ingenuity. A hero to his people, Onoda wrote down his experiences soon after his return to civilization. This book was translated into English the following year and has enjoyed an approving audience ever since.

A MAN REFUSING TO BELIEVE THE OBVIOUS BECAUSE HE LOVES TO KILL TOO MUCH.......2007-10-02
I can't believe that this monster still generates interest and fascination to this day. What Onoda doesn't include in his writings but which has been revealed in personal stories and interviews is that as early as 1950 he was fully aware that the war was over but loved killing too much. He has revealed that since the war was over civilians would be less wary and would become easy targets. And indeed, they were. He would sneak into a village at night and cut the throats of sleeping children.
He also would take pot shots of mothers hanging their clothes on clothes lines or feeding their chickens.
He calls himself the ultimate soldier and yet he killed the defenseless over and over. And when he finally tired of having to kill his own food (more often than not he would steal it from the mouths of needy children) he went home to a hero's applause. Why Japan would accept him and laud his "heroic" efforts instead of turning him over to Phillipine authorities as a not only a war criminal but more accurately a serial killer is simply unexplainable.
This clearly demonstrates Japan's unwillingness to accept their responsibility for atrocities during the war, WHICH THEY STARTED with the Rape of Nanking in 1931 in which unborn children were ripped from the wombs of their mothers by the "bold and brave" soldiers of Japan. It is no wonder then that an inhuman cowardly monster like Hiroo Onoda would be the poster child of heroism for the Japanese.
We must wonder why we think such an individual merits such attention.
Somewhat skeptical.......2007-05-31
It was not mentioned in the book, that Mr. Onada was forgiven for 29 Filipino deaths caused by him. It is difficult for me to beleve he could have been so naive and ignorant.
and 1/2 stars... Dedicated soldier.......2006-07-12
Growing up I had heard the incredible stories of Japanese soldiers popping up from the jungles years & decades after the war was over. It always blew me away that someone could continue on fighting for so long after the war had ended. I could see someone doing it for 1 or 2 years because they were usually on isolated islands. No one (as far as we Know) was fighting the war for longer than Hiroo Onada.
The only thing was though Onada didn't really need to fight for longer than the one or two years after 1945 when the war ended - that is if his mind wasn't blocking out all the information that was showing him the war was over. No matter what happened he was too suspicious that it was a trap by the American's or Filipinos. I found the story amazing but after a while one has to wonder if he will ever believe anything.
Countless times the island was blanketed with notes dropped from planes that said the war was over & Japan had surrendered. One of the soldiers he lived with walked away from Onada & his friends in 1949 (after 5 years living with Onada). He walked to freedom & then came back & tried to convince the last 3 soldiers (Onada, Shimada & Kozuka) to give up - that the war was over, they were wasting their time. They dropped notes with the 3 soldiers names on it, pictures of Onada's family members...& walked around the island with bullhorns yelling that the war was over. Onada, Shimada & Kozuka heard this from their friend & saw the notes but were convinced that their friend was captured by the enemy & it was all a trap.
Over the years his brother came & yelled on speakers to get Onada to surrender, Onada got within 150 yards of his brother & recognized him & his voice but still thought it was a trap.
Another time his sister did the same thing - he still thought something was fishy & refused to fall for the trap. People always left old newspapers around - from around the world , but mostly from the Philipines & Japan. Sometimes the stacks of newspapers were several feet high. They would read them all, right down to the "want ads". They still twisted things in their minds that the Americans had edited out all these papers & taken out the parts about the war - Onada thought the Americans went to all this trouble just to trick these couple of people on some isolated island.
For about 15 years they had access to a transistor radio & they would listen to stations all over the world - mostly Japanese but others such as the BBC. Still they couldn't wrap their heads around it that things were as they were being told from ex-soldier friends & family members. Finally after 30 years somehow Onada saw the light.
The survival part of the book is pretty interesting & there is no doubt his 30 years of living out in the elements & off the land is one of the greatest survival stories in our lifetime.
He was a smart guy & had a brilliant mind for details but his mind prevented him from seeing that the war was over 29 years before he finally walked out of the jungle.
Good read, amazing story of survival and determination........2005-04-13
I had heard stories of Japanese soldiers who had held out after the war on various islands in the pacific, so this book was exactly what I had been looking for. The idea that anyone could survive in the jungle off the land for 30 years is simply amazing. To Onoda it must of been like stepping into a time machine when he emerged from the jungle in 74. He missed the discovery of so many inventions that we take for granted, television, jet planes, computers and many more, I bet it was all very overwhelming to him. This book goes into the mind of one Japanese soldier and gives a very convincing explanation of how and why they had fought so hard and with so much tenacity and determination. There are a few typos in the book and it is not written in the best English but these are the accounts in Ononda's own words translated into English. Check this book out it is hard to put down once you start reading it.
A look at a truly dedicated man.......2005-01-31
Lt. Hiroo Onoda spent 29 years on a Phillipine island fighting World War 2. When he was 22 he arrived on Lubang, fresh out of officer training, and reported in to an Imperial Japanese Army base to assume his duties as a junior intelligence officer. Shortly thereafter the steamroller of the US Navy, Army, and Marine Corps came rolling through and and Lt. Onoda retreated to the surrounding jungles of Lubang along with 3 other soldiars when his army base was decimated and captured. Lt. Onoda had recieved orders to continue the fight, even if it meant assuming the role of a guerilla fighter until he was formally relieved by a ranking officer.
I won't ruin the story for you but I'd like to interject what I took from this book. One observation is that the ancient traditions and teachings of the Samurai (Bushido) were very much a motivational factor in the japanese military forces during the second world war. My second observation is that the devotion to duty and loyalty to an ideal can be carried further than many in the world of today could even think was possibile.
This is a must read book. I'd suggest that you familiarise yourself with the codes of Bushido first of all (Hagakure is a good place to start), so that you can better understand the mind set of Lt. Onoda. His descisions are largely based upon his upbringing and teachings and, (in my opinion) sadly, are somewhat foreign to the modern person. Wihout a small amount of familiarity with Bushido, or a knowledge of the ways of the Samurai, you might just view this story as a tale of s silly and ignorant man. I assure you that Hiroo Onoda was/is neither.
Buy it, read it, make an effort to understand, you'll be entertained and you might just take away a valuable lesson. This story is one you will always remember.

CONNIE BROCKWAY
sweeps readers into the ballrooms and boudoirs of Regency-era London and on to the Scottish Highlands in a sizzling tale of scandal, deception, and breathtaking passion.
Charlotte Nash is the most impulsive of the Nash sisters. Using her position as one of London's most popular and naughty debutantes, she assists English spies in conveying messages that will help them infiltrate Napoleon's inner circle -- and fulfill the mission her father died trying to achieve. But only as a courtesan can she infiltrate London's most notorious gatherings and retrieve a crucial document. Is she ready to take part in a deception that will leave her reputation in shreds? And when Highlander Dand Ross -- a dangerous, disreputable blackguard -- reappears in her life and offers his aid, dare she accept it? The exquisite pleasure she finds in his arms might be worth the price of her surrender, but is the dark Highlander who loves her so passionately really just luring her toward the ultimate betrayal?

Disappointing..........2007-10-04
My Surrender should have been a rousing final to the unevenly written Rose Hunter trilogy (My Seduction, My Pleasure). Instead, it is rife with inconsistencies and incredible blindness on the part of both Charlotte and Dand.
Charlotte is the feisty and rebellious youngest Nash sister. Burning with patriotic fervor and buoyed by the heroic actions of her father in saving 3 young Scotsman years earlier, she decides to enter espionage, although in a somewhat peripheral way. Her characterization veers from smart and sassy to morose and TSTL (too stupid to live). An example of the latter: When events conspire to throw her into the path of a suspected traitor, she only realizes on the eve of traveling to his home that she might need to get rid of her pesky virginity -- all after 2 weeks of pretending to be someone else's mistress, namely Dand's. The only "realistic" flavor within the story's setting is when Charlotte comes to understand exactly what it is she's lost in the eyes of society, and possibly her family, when she ruins herself. The scene with her "adopted mother" is poignant in that regard.
The denouement -- the revelation of the betrayer of Dand, Ramsey, Kit, and Douglas in the French gaol years ago -- wasn't much of a surprise given the hints in the book, as well as the previous ones. However, I was still confused at the end as to whether the betrayer acted both before the battle on French soil and in prison. That is, the author wasn't entirely clear about the fact that if he also betrayed them before they landed in France, how and why he did so. And if he didn't do so, then who did betray the battle plans?
All in all, My Surrender was full of plot holes and roll-your-eye moments when it could have been quite a tale and conclusion to the Rose Hunter series.
The Best in the Trilogy.......2005-08-29
Wow. I thought this book was the best in the trilogy. The first book was rather tedious, the second slightly better and this one was excellent. While a few things did make me roll my eyes, overall this novel is exactly what romance should be about. The two main characters know each other over a matter of years as spy contacts. They are clearly interested in each other, but don't do anything about it until they have to spend more time with each other. I love the fact that they have senses of humor. Charlotte takes matters into her own hands and deals with everything herself. She doesn't need Dand rushing to the rescue. She has great comeback lines, too. This is no prissy miss.
Dand was wonderful. Just the right blend of dashing, diffident and in love. I thought he and Charlotte had wonderful chemistry and their love scenes were excellent. I often just skip over them and really liked these. But I particularly liked that he respected her and her abilities, while not always agreeing with her.
Other critics talk about sending Charlotte on a mission to retrieve a letter which could save thousands, but she had been a spy for 2 years and there has to be a certain suspension of belief in a romance novel!
The story was interesting, but I thought clear from the beginning of the first novel who the villain was. That part of the novel was pretty much par for the course. Buy this novel for Dand and Charlotte. They have a wonderful romance!
Absolutely Wonderful.......2005-06-06
I loved Brockway's Rose Hunter Triology. While I thought My Pleasure was the best...I was wrong...Brockway left the best for last. Readers will love this final installment. I instantly liked Charlotte and fell hard for Dand! I also like the return of all the members of the Brotherhood.
You can't go wrong with a Brockway book! .......2005-05-17
Everybody has their personal favorites but I've always said you can't go wrong with a book by Connie Brockway and MY SURRENDER proves me right again! I just loved Charlotte and Dand! I thought their banter hit all of the right notes and Ms. Brockway creates a delicious blend of sensual tension and suspense as she ties up all of the loose ends of her Rose Hunters trilogy. I thought it couldn't get any better than MY PLEASURE but MY SURRENDER is right up there with the Best of Brockway!
A Fine Romance.......2005-05-17
I am so darn tired of romance readers whining about cliches but then when it comes to reading a book that has any subtlety in it at all, they start screaming that it's not hot enough. MY SURRENDER had so much depth to it and the love affair between Charloette and Dand is based on respect as well as intense passion. I really felt the anguish that Charlotte and Dand had over how they could not tell one another they loved one another and still do what they needed to do. It was a very moving story and it was told as much by what the characters couldn't say to one another as what they did.
I think this book showed that sometimes when everything doesn't always turn out perfectly its even more satisfying than when it does. For example, bad guys really do slide by without any harm ever coming to them and I applauded the fact that Brockway didn't tie everything up with bows. Another cliche would have been if Dand had refused to let Charlotte become another man's mistress but instead locked her in a room despite the fact that so many lives relied on her becoming this guy's mistress.
Okay, the virginity thing kind of stopped me for a bit too until I realized that Charlotte was thrown into her role as a substitute at the last minute. After that I totally bought that she just pushed all that to the back of her thoughts while she tried to see if she could even make the plan work. And that same reason was why the "authorities" let someone so young and inexperienced have such an important mission. She was a last minute substitute. It was her or no one.
Anyway I loved this book. Everything was so well thought out and the humorous bits were great. Especially like the baroness. Dand was dangerous and passionate and trying so hard to let Charlotte go and Charlotte was just desperate to do the right thing, no matter how much it hurt her. I'll read it again.

How Christian Fiction Should Be Written.......2007-06-30
I think this book was published in 1946, but don't let the age fool you. The author presents the story in a much more real way than many of the modern Christian writers do today. In many of the contemporary Christian novels, the characters are either so perfect that they don't seem real or so have very filthy minds. A good Christian novel is one that is somewhere in between.
Francena H. Arnold, in Not My Will, keeps it real and presents characters with real problems that only God can solve. Contemporary Christian authors should follow her example in the novels they write. Parts of it are sad, but it is well worth reading.
You may also consider reading Searching for Mom, which isn't nearly as bleak, but it is a more recent book that explores the will of God in the family relationship.
Not My Will.......2006-10-18
Best book I've ever read!!! Loved to read it when I was a teenager, and still love it now in my 30s! A classic!
Not My Will.......2006-09-14
The plot of this book is great, and the ending is so unpredictable!
Not My Will ....An Amazing Book.......2005-10-11
This book was really great and very hard to put down. I loved it! It is also a very inspiring book. The woman in this book is not very religous or spiritual but during a very difficult time she turns to someone who shows her such unconditional love that at first she finds it hard to believe someone could be so kind. Until she learns about the love of God and His love for her. She then realizes what her heart really needs to begin to heal and what is most important in life...her Heavenly Father. She learns to put her faith in God and to live according to His will.
An excellent book. It will surely touch your heart.
It is a love story like no other. You will not be able to stop reading once you start.
This book is amazing.......2004-07-07
This book is so amazing. Normally I don't get emotional when I read touching stories, but I felt tears well in my eyes as I read this heart-wrenching book.
The characters became real to me, and I felt every joy, sorrow, and trouble that they felt.
This book is a must-read. Every person should read this book!
Book Description
A Vindication of My Conduct: The Court Martial Trial of Lieutenant Colonel George Etherington of the 60th or Royal American Regiment held on the Island of St. Lucia in the West Indies, October 1781 and the Extraordinary Story of the Surrender of the Island of St. Vincent's in the British Caribbean during the American Revolution - Dr. Todd E. Harburn and Rodger Durham. The fascinating story of the surrender of St. Vincent's Island, and the subsequent attempt by the colonial governor to make the military commander a scapegoat, is presented here from a fresh perspective based on new research and previously unpublished documentation. A Vindication of My Conduct outlines this intertwined story of plots and subplots involving not only the colonial governor, Valentine Morris, and Lt. Col. George Etherington of the famed 60th Royal American Regiment, but also the Colonial Assembly, the Carib Indians of the island, the plantation owners and merchants, the British Government, and the 60th Royal American Regiment, which garrisoned the various posts on the island. It illustrates the folly that occurred between military and civilian factions that ultimately contributed to the lost British cause-much like that which occurred simultaneously in the American colonies.
The main feature of this book is the original, controversial, and never before published 1781 trial transcript which reveals the true "behind the scenes" story, not the least of which entailed a land grant dispute and the intense personality conflict that existed between Etherington and Morris.
The book contains several rarely seen original illustrations, documents, and prints, including Etherington's recently discovered portrait, along with present-day photographs of the sites where these events actually took place. It is arranged in three parts: a chronological background of the events leading to the surrender; the original unedited trial transcript; and the authors' in-depth analysis, annotation, and edit of the transcripts. This is of particular interest since other historians have written only brief, very similar general accounts, all of which basically reached the same erroneous conclusions, and which a review of the transcripts does not support. A fine addition to your Revolutionary War library! 2002, 214 pp., illus., index, $16.95 #H2092
