Book Description

Meditate on the Spiritual Significance of Marriage

In the 20th Anniversary Edition of this Gold Medallion Award winner, Mike Mason goes on a poetic search to understand the wondrous dynamics of committed love. In highly readable, first-person style, Mason’s writing stimulates readers’ thoughts and prayers and propels couples to deeper intimacy. “A marriage is not a joining of two worlds,” says the author, “but an abandoning of two worlds in order that one new one might be formed.” Rich chapters on “Otherness,” “Vows,” “Intimacy,” “Sex,” “Submission,” and an all-new chapter on “Oneness” lift readers to view the eternal, spiritual nature of this faith-filled, “impossible,” wild—yet wonderful—frontier.

“The two shall become one flesh.

This is a great mystery.”

Ephesians 5:31–32

Beautifully written and filled with life-transforming insights, the 20th anniversary edition of Mike Mason’s unparalleled Gold Medallion winner explores the mystical and holy nature of marriage with a depth that will forever alter how a couple relates to each other—and to God.

PULL OUT

The Mystery of Marriage stands out from how-to manuals on marriage as a refreshing how-come book—a brilliant celebration of the God-ordained union between man and wife.

“An outstanding achievement. Rarely has a book aroused in me so much enthusiasm as has the combination of wisdom, depth, dignity, and glow that I find in these chapters.”

J.I. Packer

“Absolutely exquisite. It reaches down deep into our innermost being, revealing, revitalizing, rewarding. A real classic.”

Gigi Graham Tchividjian

“A drop everything book. Mason deals with the stunning paradoxes of the mystery, the problems, and the glories of marriage. I don’t need to read any other book on the subject.”

Elisabeth Elliot

Story Behind the Book

“Over the twenty years since its publication, many couples have told me that they’ve read my book aloud to each other. This always amazes me and gives me great joy. I’m also amazed that many single people have read it. Either way, my goal is for hearts to be warmed by the mystery of divine love. I want couples to enter into deeper intimacy by thinking together about the mystery of marriage—about how their love, besides being a gift of God, reflects the very love He has for Himself in the Trinity. For God is not a bachelor, and throughout the Bible marriage is a supreme picture of the nature of God’s love and of His kingdom. I want people who read my book to feel so soaked in these wonderful, divine mysteries that it deepens their reverence for marriage and inspires them to greater love.”

5 out of 5 stars powerful.......2007-08-28

this book was recommended by a friend since then, i've recommended this book and given this book away as gifts to my friends getting married, thinking about marriage, or already married. it's not just about marriage, but the way a man and woman should live and can live happily in Christ

5 out of 5 stars The mystery of Christ revealed in marriage.......2007-07-01

My wife's background is in clinical psychology/marriage counseling. She has read many books on marriage and this is her favorite. I have been counseling couples and young singles concerning relationships for about 10 years -- it is my favorite as well. I've never read anything quite like it. It's a true synthesis of practical how-to and biblical Christian spirituality. This book is a REAL Christian book (as opposed to much of the seeker-sensitive pseudo-Christian stuff out there) and will not appeal to non-Christians (or to luke-warm "Christians") because at the center of this work, page after page, you will find Jesus. If you are not devoted to Jesus, then what Mike Mason says will not work for you.

THE MYSTERY OF MARRIAGE is a radical call to every Christian to give themselves completely to the call of Love, and is communicated in a poetic, powerful and unique way that will resonate in the lives of Christian couples for the rest of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book on Marriage and True Love.......2007-01-22

"The Mystery of Marriage" is an introspective look at the wonder, joy, sorrow and pain of marriage. It is refreshing, encouraging, and deep. I find myself wanting to strive for more, closer, stronger in my own marriage as I read.
This makes a perfect wedding gift - especially for those "soulmate" couples...

1 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-01-06

This book takes you where most books on marriage and relationship never take you. One of the problems with "help and guidance" books is that most never really address the roots and foundations that experience and life are really built upon. Mike addresses the essentials in a very artistic manner that draws you in and causes you embrace those mysterous truths about marriage and the relationship between a man and woman that most of us miss, unless we are willing to pursue the depths. Include some "practical" books on marriage, but don't leave this one out of your "must read and apply" library.

3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2006-11-14

The author jam packs about 96 pages of content into 224 pages. His message is quite simple and utlimately very helpful, however; the authors extended metaphors and comments are a bit overdone. Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas is a better written and more thoughtful book that covers the same topics.

5 out of 5 stars Founder of the New Parent Transition Program & Author of "Life after 'I Do!" loves this book!.......2006-11-09

As a Family Management Coach, I help first-time moms and dads create a new framework for their life because of all the competing demands on their time and energy. At the beginning of my program, I strongly and persistently encourage my clients to read Linda Mason's book BEFORE their child is born when they still have time to read and reflect on this life changing transition. Those that read it - always thank me for recommending it. The Working Mother's Guide to Life is a fabulously informative and thought-provoking resource.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative!.......2006-11-05

This book was purchased as a gift for my sister. She is a very busy mother of two and has told me that she was pleasantly surprised by how informative and helpful this book is. For someone who admittedly thought she had enough strategies and solutions of her own, she agrees that she learned more than a few new helpful tips from this book. She's already recommended it to friends.

2 out of 5 stars Seemed rather simplistic/obvious to me.......2006-07-10

I picked up a copy of this book because of all the great reviews. I have a 3 month old and started back to work a few weeks ago. Frankly, there wasn't much in here that I needed or didn't figure out on my own.

I am giving it two starts, instead of one, because everyone is different and what I thought to be obvious advice may be a revelation to someone else. The one thing I have learned about parenting is that you have to figure it out what is best for you all by yourself. And if you need a book to help you, then this would certainly be a perfectly good one to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely helpful!.......2005-12-19

As a working mother and mother of a 6 year old son, I found this book very interesting and helpful! Eventhough I'm from Mexico, and there are some cultural differences, being a mother is the same. Every time that I have the opportunity, I recommend the book.

4 out of 5 stars Working Mom to Busy to Read.......2005-12-13

I'm a full time working Mom of a 2 1/2 year old and I'm half time in graduate school. I did think that what I could read of this book was good. Best tips: leather furniture and hardwood floors to make cleaning easy. However, as a working Mom I just didn't have time to read this book. If I'm not working I want to focus on my son. An hour or so of cleaning, cooking, etc after he goes to bed . . . then repeat. This is a great gift if you want to show your support of a woman that wants to go back to work, but it can also seem judgmental to a woman that's just struggling to get by or wants to stay home. I remember receiving a book as a gift about "Getting Your Priorities Straight" from another woman. What was she trying to tell me?

If you're a working Mom and buying this for yourself then Good Show! If you're thinking of buying this for a gift for someone then be careful. A home made gift certificate for "a romantic night out with your husband" may be more appreciated.

Book Description

An impassioned argument for the restoration of children's rights to the foreground of family law

Drawing on a wealth of legal cases and research-as well as on the personal stories of families caught in these disputes-Mary Ann Mason presents a program for reform that is certain to change the terms of the debate on child custody, one of the most highly charged topics on the national agenda.

"A brilliant, highly readable book that not only points to shocking court and mediation policies but proposes sensible remedies that could be enforced tomorrow. The Custody Wars is essential reading for judges, attorneys, mental health practitioners, mediators and responsible parents everywhere." -Judith Wallerstein, Ph.D., author of Second Chances and Surviving the Breakup

1 out of 5 stars Why is it that ladies with a voice, like the author, rarely show any sympathy or compassion for other women?.......2007-06-18

"Custody Wars" is just another attempt by some pseudo-feminist. Mary Mason obviously doesn't believe in the importance of children being with their mother's, or in women's equal rights, or in the equal rights of middle class Americans.

On pages 213 and 214 the author briefly discusses the Baby M case with an obvious slant towards the sperm donor/allegedly-infertile couple. (Why is it that ladies with a voice, like the author, rarely show any sympathy or compassion towards other women?) If you're not familiar with the Baby M case then I urge you to read Mary Beth Whitehead's book, "A Mother's Story." In her book, Mary Beth details that contracts cannot legislate love and no amount of money was able to buy her flesh and blood.

5 out of 5 stars What every family judge, attorney, and parent should read.......2002-02-14

The author, who happens to be a judge, writes from the unique point of view of the child's interest -- not the mother's, father's, attorney's or GAL's (the latter two who usually run the show in family court). While it's well-known that most divorces are won by whoever has the most money and the best-connected lawyer (still, about money and paybacks to courts and judges - yes, it's a fact!) -- it's wonderful to discover that there are still a few wise people out there who care about the children involved.

A *must read* for parents, judges, GALs, and child psychologists.

5 out of 5 stars Mason's book demysifies The Custody Wars brilliantly........1999-03-10

The thesis of Berkeley Law Professor Mary Ann Mason's highly readable and powerfully argued The Custody Wars is that the U.S. legal system fails to provide adequate representation and concern for the interests of children in custody disputes. Judiciously articulated irony abounds, as when Mason exposes the court system's vulnerability to the cynically utilized self-interest of many middle/upper class fathers and mothers for whom parenting is on the back burner. On the other hand, it is equally ironic that parents of both genders who practice self-sacrificism (not healthy, involved parenting) are sometimes the most childishly selfish in insisting upon their entitlement, regardless of the child's feelings. We learn of children whose lives are ridiculously fragmented and enervated by joint custody shuttlings, and yet we also hear of children who have benefited from the arrangement, thanks in large measure to the parents' maturity. As evidenced by the specificity and nuanced analysis in her case studies, Mason's scrupulous fairness and flexibility in offering parameters of judgment about custodial fitness are rooted in compassion for the child's well-being. She simultaneously seeks reasonably objective standards while realizing how difficult they are to determine, especially on ideological battlefields. Hers is wisdom unavailable to radical relativists or the theologically impaired. To note only two of many fine examples of her clear thinking about how the court system can be changed to make custody decisions more child-centered, Mason proposes that judges be educated in child development and that reviews of custody arrangements be mandated when the child is 7 and 12. Professor Mason has much of interest for various potential readerships. There are chapters on the unwed father, stepparents, domestic violence, gay and lesbian parents, and "test tube troubles." Mason's argument merits serious attention from a broad spectrum of policy-makers, academics, and warring couples and ex-couples. In fact, as a friend of mine, a single mother faced with absurd demands from a father with an abysmal track record, declared, "This book should be required reading for every couple considering marriage or children."

        Book Description

Stan was born in the early 1950s. It was a time of unknowns in the world of challenged individuals. There was no education available, no occupational therapy, no tolerance from society. These individuals were to be locked away in an asylum or a back room at home and never mentioned. Stan was given no chance of succeeding in society by any doctor. However, he had other ideas, and he had a family who refused to believe that he would not be all he could be. His life, his trials, struggles, hopes, dreams, and success are a testament that, although we all are flawed, what we choose to do with the gifts, talents, and skills we have been given is the measure of not only our successes, but who we are. Stan's story is an inspiration for others to live by.

        Book Description

Finally, a book for guys that solves the riddles of pregnancy.

Do you think that newborn babies can eat Doritos? That they can't scream very loudly since they just have tiny little baby lungs? That you will still be able to golf on weekends after your baby is born?

If so, you need this book!

Breathe takes guys misstep-by-misstep through the stages of pregnancy and the early days of childhood. Considered by many to be the unofficial pregnancy handbook of the NBA, Breathe is filled with useful tips such as these:

Brown's First Law of Conception: The odds of conception are inversely proportional to its desirability. High school virgins experimenting behind bleachers are guaranteed to get pregnant; financially secure married men hoping for children are doomed to spend their weekends in fertility clinics masturbating into cups.

Picking a doctor: Never use a gynecologist whose Medical School Diploma has palm trees on the side.

Pre-Natal Music: Mozart, yes. Wagner, No!

Common Concerns: If your baby is born with dark hair that covers its head, back, neck, temples and forehead, don't panic. This is perfectly normal. It just means your baby was born Italian.

Child experts from all over the world agree -- if you're a first time father, drop your baby and pick up this book!

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother with this book!.......2005-09-20

This book is completely useless. It doesn't help a guy through his partner's pregnancy, it gives suggestions such as: "pack night vision goggles to take to the delivery with you". Save your money for a better book!

        1 out of 5 stars Distasteful Humor.......2005-03-09

I would not recommend this book to anyone. As a woman I found it appaling and rude. My husband took one look at it and threw it back on the coffe table. I will give you some examples of how aweful this book is. In the very beginning the book gave examples of how men can enjoy the "practice" of getting pregnant without getting the wife pregnant. It suggests purchasing a hot cup of McDonalds coffee, placing between you thighs, and spilling it on yourself. Another example is: Ideal places to look for adoptive children - The ladies room at a high school prom. I didn't even get to page 10, I was in shock. Granted it is supposed to be humorous, but this kind of humor should not be in book form, it should be saved for something like the Man show.

5 out of 5 stars For people with a sense of humor, this is a great book..........2004-06-07

I found this book hilarious. I read some of the other reviews, and frankly found them to miss the point entirely. It's as if they went to see "Edward Scissorhands" and complained about it because it was too much of a fairytale and didn't address the realities of adoption!

I also find it short-sighted for someone to say this book is full of locker room humor. Clearly, these folks didn't actually read the book. Very little of what is in it could be found in a locker room. However, I can see how people without a sense of humor might be confused. This is no "oh, aren't babies cute, let's learn how they work" kind of book. It's more "damn, babies are hard to raise, but this stuff is funny because I was thinking exactly that".

The bottom line is, if you've had a child and you're a man, you'll enjoy this book. To me, it's more Lewis Black than Adam Corolla, if that helps anyone.

If you're looking for a book that will actually teach you important things about pregnancy, this is probably not your book. If you're looking for something to read when you can't sleep and it's your wife's turn to feed the baby at 3 a.m., then this is your book.

        1 out of 5 stars Breathe: A Guy's Guide to Pregnancy.......2004-03-01

I found this book to be tasteless and almost without merit. Books for expectant fathers should have some useful information and advice worked in with the the humor, and I did not find this to be the case with "Breathe." I perused it for perhaps 5 minutes, at which point I decided I could not give it to ANY of my young friends who are expectant fathers. They all have a good sense of humor, but beyond a couple of good giggles, this book has no redeeming positive perspective to lend to a pregnancy.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Lawdy this one funny book........2003-06-06

Who is this Mason Brown and why has the reading public been denied his genius until now? I got this book as a gift after my wife and I announced our pregancy, and I have been yucking it up ever since. Your wife probably has a copy of THE GIRLFRIENDS GUIDE TO PREGNANCY, well, this is the man's version, and without all the boring biology stuff -- it's like reading one of those National Lampoon magazines from back in the 70s - back when P.J. O'Rourke wasn't taking himself quite so seriously. Ha Ha Ho Ho is all I have to say.

        Book Description

All Our Families, a project of the Berkeley Forum on the Family, takes a hard look at contemporary families. Thoroughly revised and updated, this second edition includes chapters on divorcing families, single-parent families, step-families, dual-income families, adolescent-parent families, immigrant families, and gay and lesbian families. Distinguished by their exceptional reputations as family scholars, the Forum's interdisciplinary team of authors examines the challenges to existing public policies that are brought on by problems such as custody disputes, family poverty, parental kidnapping, fathers who aren't really fathers, abuse and neglect, and the special psychological conditions faced by today's couples with newborns. The contending claims of biological and psychological parents are also exposed and confronted. Essential for courses in sociology, psychology, social work, public policy, and law, All Our Families, 2/e proposes new policies for strengthening the families of America as we move into the twenty-first century.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched essays on the realities of the "now" family........1999-02-24

These editors and authors have pulled together essays covering the "real' and "now" families of the 21st century, together with their real issues. My interest in this book comes from three angles; as a librarian and selector of material for a university library collection on pastoral counselling; as a Masters student looking specifically at stepfamilies; and as a private counsellor. This book incorporates, for the student, counsellor and client, valuable and realistic information on the ways things are in families, and ultimately therefore windows of opportunity through to working with issues of the 21st century family. I recommend this book as a means of gathering valuable information on families and thereby offering useful basis for working with clients and issues.

4 out of 5 stars terrific contemporary ranch romance.......2006-05-07

The night before she married Brian Flannigan, Mimi Cannady had sex with Mason Jefferson, the man she always loved, but who she believes saw her as his best buddy. When she said I do, Mason realizes he made a mistake because the woman he loves is someone else's wife.

Mason has recently become the sheriff replacing Mimi's father. Soon afterward, Mimi informs him that he, not Brian, sired her child Nanette. Outraged, he informs Mimi that their daughter will live at his family's ranch Malfunction Junction, which he assumes means Mimi too now that she is no longer married. However, Mimi knows she cannot live at the ranch suffering from unrequited love. Mason has to persuade that he always loved her and not just for Nanette's sake.

Though a wee bit of communication could have avoided heartache, the latest Cowboys by the Dozen tale is a terrific contemporary ranch romance starring two protagonists whose simmering heat has been in the background through the early tales. The story line is character driven as Mimi and Mason must find a way to relate to the other how they feel. Fans of this delightful mini series will enjoy this fine finish (including the solving of a family mystery) to an enjoyable series.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars custody tends to be economically based.......1999-01-25

This book is fair and comprehensive and, thankfully, free of feminist cant and propoganda. I learned much even though I know the material fairly well. My major insight was that custody has always been based on finding someone who will support the child, indentured servant or divorced wife and protect the State from having to pay. The change from father custody to mother custody has forced the State to become increasingly effective at requiring the parent with money to give the money to the other parent, allowing custody to be given to the less economically viable parent.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Research & Flawed Conclusions.......1998-05-28

Mason covers the history of legal custody with the exacting detail of a trained scholar. However, her conclusion that the "best interest of the child," is best served without regard for the best best interest of the parent will give an entire new generation of judiciary the opportunity to vacate parent's civil rights in favor of their children and the state.

Her idea of giving each child in a divorce their own legal representation will most certainly serve the best interests of attorneys everywhere, while leaving middle-class parents pennyless in their pursuit of justice.

For legal education and precedent this book rates a 10. For the long-term health of civilization, it deserves a 0.
