These recipes are tried and true. Many of them are in my personal recipe file. What's fun is finding them in various areas of the country and reading some of the comments made by the Ladies in Red! It's a fun, easy to follow cookbook. Not too challenging, and yet the recipes rate high in flavor and appearance. A must have cookbook, especially for the beginning chef!

    Book Description

The follow-up to the #1 New York Times bestseller The Red Hat Society is a collection of the RHS members' most memorably funny and touching stories. It's Chicken Soup for the Red Hat Soul. Life begins at 50! And the women of the Red Hat Society are proud of it. In THE RED HAT SOCIETY'S LAUGH LINES, Sue Ellen Cooper and the women of the RHS celebrate the life experiences that have made them who they are today. Over the years, they've accumulated well-earned laugh lines and cry-lines from wonderfully funny, incredibly touching stories that will warm readers' hearts and touch their souls. Just as there is so much more to each of these women than a purple outfit and a red hat, there's so much more to their lives than the RHS-from their husbands, children, and grandchildren to living life fabulously after 50. This book is a collection of some of the most touching and funniest stories that they want to share with their sisters, and is filled with sidebars recommending their favorite books and movies. With contributions from members across the country, this collection is bound to thrill all Red Hatters-and those who soon will be.

    Book Description

Finally, the official book of The Red Hat Society, which is sweeping the nation. Inspired by the Jenny Joseph poem that begins: 'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple/With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me,' Sue Ellen Cooper bought herself a red hat. Soon it became her signature gift for friends turning 50. In 2000, Cooper and her friends formed The Red Hat Society, whose only rule is no rules-it's simply a play group encouraging women over 50 to have fun, support each other, and find kindred spirits. THE RED HAT SOCIETY is their official book, covering marriage, children, grandparenting, careers, retirement, physical, mental and spiritual aging, friendship, mothers, daughters, sisterhood in hard times, clothes, rituals, the genesis of The Red Hat Society, and of course, information on how readers can start their own chapters.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A terrific read, even for guys.......2006-10-28

As a 50-year-old guy, I'm not in the typical demographic for this book. Nevertheless, I found it to be a real hoot.

The Red Hat Society started in 1996 as a sort of joke between frieds. Sue Allen Cooper had read Jenny Joseph's poem, "Warning" which threatened all sorts of self-indulgent and unladylike behavior -- including wearing purple clothes and red hats -- when she grew old enough to get away with it. Cooper started giving red hats to her friends as they turned 50. The silliness and liberation that this unleashed quickly became contagious. In a few months, the idea of forming rule-less girls-only clubs had spread across the country and around the world. The joy, release and sisterhood that these women have found is very inspiring and fun to watch. Rather than making middle- and old age a thing to dread, these women have found joy and camaraderie in their later years.

The book tells of the story of the group and divulges the homemade rituals and customs of this fabulous "disorganization" It gives helpful tips on how to form a group of one's own, and of all things that go along with being a Red Hatter - the regal wave, the motto, the song, the vows and regalia.

I truly enjoyed the freewheeling wackiness that has been a hallmark of the group from the beginning. The group names are a riot - "The Scarlett O'Hattas," "The Red Hat Tamales," and the "Ladies of the Purple Sage" are just a few of the whimsical names that the women have given themselves. Not to mention the personal titles! Women are bestowing upon themselves titles from Lady to Queen and everything in between. "Countess Can't-be-bothered" and "Lady Lie-about" were two of my favorites.

The Red Hat Society is a breath of fresh air and sisterhood to what can bee a depressing and lonely stage in a woman's life. The Red Hatters are giving themselves permission to get old, permission to age gracefully and permission to bring joy into their own lives.

    You go, Highnesses!

1 out of 5 stars Do not recommend.......2006-08-05

This book is full of typos; what happened to proofreading...is that a lost art/job?

This book is also a good example of what Andy Rooney spoke of; authors making thousands on the backs of others. Nothing is original by the author in this book; it is merely a compliation of the works of others. You would think at least, since the author did have to compose anything, she could have at least proofread it.

5 out of 5 stars The Red Hat Society (TM): Fun and Friendship After Fifty.......2006-03-23

This is a wonderful book for those ladies approaching the dramatic age of "50". It's uplifting, funny and positively great for boosting morale. Almost like turning 21 again! We have a new look on life and plan to strut with our Red Hats often. Already my friends and I have chartered our membership and have officially named ourselves the "Fabulous Diva D'Lites". An article was printed recently in our local newspaper with a photo of our Queen Mum and all the Divas! So far, we've had a ball! I highly recommend this book...

5 out of 5 stars From QueenLadyInPurple...great idea, lots of fun..........2006-02-20

I have heard of this 'movement' for several years, and finally started my own chapter...but I guess its going to be slow-going cause no one has joined me yet...but I will continue to wear my purple, plus my red hats...and maybe those I invited will loosen up for some nice fun times...thanks for this book...it was a source of encouragement; gave me the guts to go for it...so give my Chapter a gander...join the Rockin' n Rollin' Reds in Arvada, CO. Way to go, Queen Sue Ellen!

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun Read.......2005-09-23

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Light hearted good fun with lots of ideas for Red Hat Ladies.

    Book Description

Sue Ellen Cooper, bestselling author of The Red Hat Society: Fun and Friendship After Fifty and one of the founders of this bourgeoning group--which increases by 100 chapters a day--provides the foreword, and the animated character Ruby Red Hat hosts the proceedings in high style and high spirits.

There's no doubt that the "Red Hats" are an amazing phenomenon. Not only did the book written by its founders stay on the New York Times' Bestseller List for weeks, but more and more women over 50 just keep catching the wave and joining the movement. And what could be better for the now nearly one million members who celebrate fun and friendship than scrapbooking? They'll all rush to those shoeboxes filled with photos and come to this brightly illustrated volume to see how to do it in the inimitable, adventurous Red Hat way. Fifteen sections, organized by particular "Red-Hat-isms"-such as Dress for Excess and Exercise Your Funny Bone-are introduced by Ruby Red Hat, who's always garbed in the appropriate manner for each particular theme. The nearly 80 projects include both flat album-type pages as well as spectacular dimensional ideas for gift boxes, invitations, and other designs. Readers will also appreciate 9 pages of patterns-not to mention the wit and wisdom they'll find along with the techniques.

I have no idea what the Red Hat Society really is, but lots of the layouts shown were great. Very attractive book. I picked it up for ideas and got plenty!

5 out of 5 stars Scrappin' with Hattitude!.......2006-08-23

There are so many fun ways to create pages for Red Hatters!!! I also had to purchase a copy of this book, not for just the great ideas of scrapbooking but because I'm featured in a couple of the photos. If you're a Red Hatter this is one book to have!

4 out of 5 stars Mostly photos of scrapbook pages.......2006-01-23

I purchased this book because on the Red Hat Society site it said it had nearly 100 projects in it. In actual count there are 26 actual craft projects, plus 72 photos of finished scrapbook pages. Lots of cute ideas but don't think you're getting nearly 100 different "projects".

Book pages are about 9" square and the photos of the scrapbook pages are about 7" square. Excellent, clear photography showing all the design ideas. Each scrapbook page has a little box with a description of the page contents or techniques. The scrapbook pages are almost all very gaudy with expensive embellishments, I would guess to be prepared to spend up to $10 per page if you copy them.

The projects include a Bra Purse made from a large red bra (I gotta do this one!), table accessories, Christmas ornaments, invitations, bags, tags, books, boxes, a Royal Sceptre, and more.

There are lots of tips and techniques sprinkled throughout, humorously presented.

A good price here on amazon, I paid $20 for it at the Red Hat Society site.

      Book Description

A fun and vibrant celebration of red hats and the women who wear them. On festive display here are some of the most amazing, unique, elegant, and just plain wacky works of millinery art ever designed since the first red hat was donned in 1997. Best of all, the models showing off the impressive headgear are the very inspirational ladies who created them. These women happily offer colorful commentary on their handiwork, from information on the hats’ construction to anecdotes about the reactions they evoke. Irresistible, proud Red Hat hattitude shines through in chapters such as Hoity Toity Crowning Glories, Mad Hatter Tea-Time Toppers, Blooming Brims, and, best of all, Over-the-Top Hats.
An introduction by Founder and Exalted Queen Mother Sue Ellen Cooper (author of the bestselling Fun and Friendship After Fifty) focuses on the history of the hat, fun hat facts, and the basics of embellishing a hat—and the sassy Ruby Red Hat provides amusing narration throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Red Hat Romance.......2006-09-09

This is another installment in the Red Hat Series, nothing heavy or cerebral. On the order of Fannie Flagg's fiction--light ladies' lit. Several of the women in this small Texas town who are bound by their participation in the Red Hat Society discover that middle age doesn't preclude them from finding romance and happiness in their lives after experiencing painful losses. Things pretty much end "happily ever after" but sometimes that's all you're asking of a book. An enjoyable, easy read.

This is a terrible book. It is poorly written and extremely predictable. If you are in High School it "might" be a good choice just to pass the time if you are bored to death.

      4 out of 5 stars The Queens.........2006-08-26

Ellie is told after many years of marriage that her husband has found someone else. A waitress from Hooter's who is years younger. So nine months later she has a house on Woodlawn Avenue. A far cry from her old life. But one day she receives a knock at the door; a lady with pound cake proclaiming she has to come to tonight's bridge game, because she is Queen #4, Queen of Hearts, because she has the heart arch in her house. Where the other members have the spade, diamond and club. She reluctantly goes, and soon finds out the bridge rules are paralleling her own life.

I gave this book 4 stars because all the bridge talk confused me a bit, as well as a tad bit boring. I am really not a card player. However, I do want to read the other books, so this was indeed a good read!

This is a terrible book. It is poorly written and extremely predictable. If you are in High School it "might" be a good choice to pass the time.

Tea parties and endless chatter about the weather and men is what comes to mind when I think of a Red Hat Society get-together. Boy, did I have the wrong idea. Regina Hale Sutherland shows us that these get-togethers are all but boring. With mystery, blossoming friendships, heartache, and life lessons through a game of cards, "The Red Hat Society's Queens of Woodlawn Avenue" is a fun, heartwarming read.

Now, personally, I've never sat down to a bridge game, or even watched anyone play. But, by the end of this book, I learned that the rules of bridge and the rules of life are almost one in the same. Sutherland's elegant writing had me looking for a double meaning around every corner. For example, all of Ellie's lessons are the titles of the chapters. My favorite of those lessons is called "Becoming a Captain". Jane, the Queen of Diamonds, tells Ellie that "now that he's revealed his hand, you can become the captain." So, this quote refers to 1) the point in bridge where your partner makes her bid, which limits her hand, and you can take the lead, or become the captain with your hand, and 2) when someone you know reveals a secret that you can use to your advantage. Yes, even the Queens resort to blackmail when they feel it necessary.

Sutherland's cozy characters became my best friends for the weekend. This storyline shows the way that I would want my life to turn out if I were in the same situation as Ellie. Because in the end all the good things were definitely worth all the bad. I found myself hoping for the best and wondering what would happen next. I will definitely be a frequent reader of Sutherland's upcoming Red Hat Society books. Whether it's mystery, romance, or friendship that you are seeking, I would recommend this cozy read to anyone who needs comfort food for the soul.

Without ever knowing it, Ellie Johnson became one of the Queens of Woodlawn Society when she moved into a house on Woodlawn Ave. By moving there she automatically became a member of the bridge club along with Grace, Jane, and Linda. Each of the foursome have an arch in their home designed in the shape of a card suit with Ellie being the queen of hearts. The others take the recently divorced Ellie under their wing. Grace teaches her how to repair her garden; Linda helps her regain her place in Nashville society; and Jane assists her with a new business start-up.

Ellie remains bitter over her marital break-up due to her husband playing with a Double D bimbo after twenty fives years together. She soon learns that she is considered attractive by men when her first client, a suave Frenchman pursues her and a police officer wants to date her. Her former spouse keeps calling and over time their contacts become less acrimonious. However, Ellie remains uncertain as to what she wants especially from him and whether she can forgive him. He becomes her rock when she wants to host a society event and when one of regal peers is jailed. Ellie knows she still loves the rat, but doubts she can ever trust him again.

The members of the QUEENS OF WOODLAWN SOCIETY belong to the Red Hat Society, a women's group that is a combination social club and helping hand to one another. Ellie learns to accept what happened and to move on with her life applying the rules of bridge to making decisions. Readers will adore Ellie and her friends as this deep character study is an amusing poignant read.
