5 out of 5 stars Do You Want More Life?.......2007-10-02

When I came upon this book I was looking for a book that would guide me to do greater business with Asians in my community.

One of the things that I hadn't liked while attempting to do business with Asians, was not knowing why they often would say something like, "I'm advertising in the Korean papers."

My response had been, "Do you only want the Koreans to know you are here?" And, of course that did not curry favor with my Asian prospects.

"Thick Face, Black Heart," means "carry your shield, and your spear." It's responding to your interlocutor on a level that allows you to get what you want faster, without conflict. And this goes beyond the verbal judo concepts that I've mastered since 1999. (See "Verbal Judo" by George Thompson, Ph.D.)

The most hilarious statement in this book is, when Chin-Ning Chu says that she will guide you to make the choice between when you should turn the other cheek, or slap back twice.

Because of the writing style of this book, I laughed so deeply, and I could envision applying what I must, to get what I want.

Before reading this book, my mindset for the Asians was one of frustration. Now, I have greater understanding and appreciation of each Asian who I meet. And, I'm more open to understanding how they think, as individuals.

There are many examples in this book of social interactions, and choices for the reader to not only relate to, but also practice, that anyone reading this, regardless of who your interlocutor's, or your objectives are, will appreciate this book - tremendously.

Ms. Chu also detailed a sales mistake that she once made and how she would have done differently. I made exactly that same sales mistake, just 3 weeks ago. And, now, I'm armed with a "thick face, black heart," when it comes to that particular scenarior.

I am sure that I will reread this book, as I grow beyond my wildest dreams, and I will be reading all of Ms. Chu's other warrior philosophy books, because reading them enhances my ability to honor my dharma.

4 out of 5 stars People-pleasers beware!.......2007-02-08

If you are a die-hard people-pleaser, this book could fit in easily with books about learning how to face your fears. The bottom line for me personally was how to not let my concerns about other people's opinions become a road block for getting good, meaningful work accomplished. I did read most of the book, skimmed some parts that tended to be repetitive. All the while I interpreted my own discomfort with Chu's "businessperson as warrior" theme as a reminder of my own tendencies to flee instead of fight in the workplace.

Overall, an interesting way to look at business and at life, but not a life-changing book for me.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Read with Plenty of Examples.......2006-12-19

One of the best books I have read this year. The strength of the book are the countless examples that are given. It is one to offer a philosophy. It is another to back it up with an example you can relate to. The author does this and does it well. I knocked this book out in three days and it has already made a positive on not only my business, but my life.

2 out of 5 stars Eastern Philosoply meet Western Life and Capitalism.......2006-09-08

After having lived for over half a century, I have come to the conclusion that there are no "secrets" that if only known to us commoners and working class people would change our lives in any significant way.

I am very skeptical with advice such as "being one with the universe" while stewing in a traffic jam.

TFBH did not even throw me a bone with even a little meat on it. Basically it is an Eastern styled version of Looking Out for Number One.

I did not glean anything that I did not already know - there were no earth shattering revelations or jewels of wisdom by the end of the book.

Perhaps I overlooked something or it just was not a book I could relate to. This one will be donated to the local library.

5 out of 5 stars struggling to reconcile east and west? you must read........2006-05-13

Having practiced eastern philosophy for many years I frequently found myself confused about its seeming incompatibility in a western world. Until i read this book.

Very easy to read, with lots of great examples and exercises. I don't usually go in for books with exercises but they are more meditations than anything.

This is a must read, mine got damaged and i'm buying a second copy for myself and one for a friend.

They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus, but according to perennial New York Times bestselling author Johanna Lindsey, men, especially huge hunks like Dalden Ly-San-Ter, are from the planet Sha-Ka'an, and women, especially strong-minded, statuesque beauties like carpenter Brittany Callaghan, are from right here on Earth! Lindsey's latest offering is out of this world--literally. Brittany meets the first man she's ever had to look up to when she sees Dalden at a political rally... like she could avoid noticing a 7-foot tall Hercules clad in form-fitting leather pants. When he disappears without a trace, Brittany is unaccountably put out. But when Dalden just as mysteriously reappears in her apartment the next day, her already piqued interest--and libido--goes into overdrive. Brittany thinks Dalden is just visiting from another country, never guessing that his home is actually in a whole different solar system. Dalden is hunting an unscrupulous enemy who has stolen a shipment of mind-altering weapons, a situation with potentially cataclysmic results. But the virginal Brittany is a distraction Dalden didn't count on. Add a smart-mouthed computer, the burgeoning passion between the oh-so-different protagonists, and Heart of a Warrior offers a wild romp that only Lindsey could write. Fasten your seat belts and relish the ride! --Alison Trinkle

5 out of 5 stars What a Warrior!.......2007-10-07

This fabulous story has characters from very near and very far. The struggle, between these two characters, trying to understand their very different cultures keep you laughing and cheering!! A must for every romantic...especially those who have ever been bewildered by the thought process of a man! :)

5 out of 5 stars Heart of a Warrior.......2007-09-21

This book arrived in great condition and in excellent time. I will purchase from this seller again.

4 out of 5 stars Did not realize it was the 3rd in a series.......2007-09-03

I really enjoyed this book, and it had quite a few parts that made me laugh out loud. I did not realize it was the third of a series of books when I started reading it, but pretty much figured that out by the way some of the other characters where being introduced to the story. I never felt lost in the story though, but now I would like to go back and read the other two books (book 1: Warrior's women & book 2: Keeper of the heart). When I originally purchased the book I did not realize that Dalden described as the "spectacular blond Viking" on the back of the book cover, was actually really from out of this world as was hinted at. Had I known it was a sci-fi romance I probably would not have purchased it! I was very pleasantly surprised, by the story and the fact that I enjoyed it so much. Martha the Mock II computer really added a nice amount of comic relief to the story, and the characters where very likable. Brittany Callaghan who is from our world and time was very easy to relate too, especially when she is forced to deal with technology that is far superior to ours as well as Barbarians and their very primitive ways. The book moves at a very fast pace and I found it hard to put down. Johanna Lindsey never ceases to amaze me with her ability to tell a great story, even if some of the love scenes are not as steamy as we have grown to expect from her!!! :0)

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-08-23

I read this futuristic series in order and have to say that Warrior Woman is one of my favorite Lindsey novels besides the Malorys. I was kind of dissappointed by the second novel and when I saw the reviews for the third novel I wasn't expecting much, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.
The novel is about a Warrior named Dalden who travels to earth from another planet to find a villian and meets a woman named Brittany asks her to help him find this villian falls in love with her along the way and takes her home to his planet. Even though much of the novel does recap much of what happened in the other two novels, I think that it was necessary because we can't expect Brittany to go into the warrior world without an explanation into what their rules are and what she has to expect. Though I did find in rather exasperating at times that it took Brittany so long to figure out that it wasn't just some big scheme, all in all in was a good book.

1 out of 5 stars It gets a 'F'.......2007-03-18

OMG! The premise sounds great. The earlier story, Warrior's Woman, contains one of my favorite scenes of all time in it. But this book suffers by comparison not only to Warrior's Woman, but also to many other Lindsey books.

For starters, the science fictional elements are incredibly lame. The bad guy, and the 'Altering Rods' - weapons his culture uses, are Saturday morning cartoon material. You find yourself skimming past those parts of the story.

As someone else on these pages remarked, it seems like the story is more about the relationship between Brittany and Martha - who wears very thin after a while, than Brittany and Dalden. You find yourself skimming past those parts of the story as well. Because Martha talks too much.

The big showstopper for me was that Brittany wanted to avoid being subservient, however in a major plot element, she acts in just such a childish way as the culture claims women are supposed to behave. The business about her life in danger from her 'mistake,' and then having to be 'punished' to force her to be obedient doesn't cut it. Neither does the ending in which Dalden gives her the project of building their dream house.

It's stupid. It's degrading. And it left a bad taste in my mouth. The only redeeming part of the book is that the sex scenes are hot. Who wouldn't want to have Dalden for a lover - if he could be confined to a cage the size of the bedroom.

This title was among the winners of the 2006 Skipping Stones Honor Awards for Multicultural & International Awareness Books. Keeping Heart on Pine Ridge is an intimate look at contemporary life with the Lakota people on Pine Ridge Indian Rerservation, near the Black Hills in South Dakota. Insightful stories of compassion, despair, humor, and spiritual growth are drawn from two years of daily life in a strong and tormented community. Firsthand accounts of sundances, commodity foods, sweat lodges, drunken driving, and the Sacred provide the fabric through which Glover weaves his incisive wit and wisdom on the social and political forces that have challenged his people and made them stronger.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Heart On Pine Ridge:Family Ties, Warrior Culture, Commodity Foods, Rez Dogs and the Sacred.......2005-11-28

A group from our church has gone to Pine Ridge on Mission trips for the past three years and we have gotten to know quite a few people there. We always seem to have gained more than we have given during our week stay. This book tells it how it is for much of the population on the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is a very helpful book for the leaders of our Mission to share with others that are joining us. We love the people there. They focus on what really matters in life and brings us back to where we all need to live. Most of us are so far removed from nature, family, giving our all to each other. This book shows us how and points out how far removed we are. It really brings questions to the way that I am living my life. It points out just how differently I need to live to become apart of life as Jesus would want me to live it.
Thank you, Vic Glover. And thank you to our Native brothers and sisters.

Vic Glover has an amazing talent and style of writing that 'just takes you right there'.
With much humour and sadness, Vic takes you on a journey, that whets the appetite, always leaving you wanting to read more.
This is a great read, I highly recommend it.

A moving glimpse into the everyday lives of the people that live on Pine Ridge. The blending of Lakota spirituality into the challenges of life in an impoverished society is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Heart on Pine Ridge.......2004-12-12

A must read for anyone interested in what life on a western Rez is really about. BroVic captures the humor and pathos of daily life in a marvelously clear, straightforward way that simutaneously makes you wish you were there to share in it and glad that you're not.

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Moments.......2004-12-11

I lived on a rez for 7 years, but I could never convey to others the texture of living there. Vic Glover can. This is a beautiful bouquet of real life vignettes, interwoven and told with an honest voice. Vic writes with nothing to hide, and that makes these stories so rich and visceral.

And it's damn cheap, like me. Perfect for Christmas presents. I'm gonna order some more copies.

      Book Description

It takes a warrior to stand tall and strong in an age of cynicism. Today, Stu Weber's ringing affirmation of godly manhood reestablishes a man's highest priorities. Brief chapters, salted with the author's stories, present the characteristics of tender warriors -- including watching out for what lies ahead, keeping commitments, and learning to speak the language of women. In his warm yet straightforward style, Weber shows how a man's strength can be tempered with tenderness, grace, and submission to God's Son, the ultimate Tender Warrior.

      Book Description

As we struggle to subdue our own mind, will, and emotions to Christ; as we strive to preserve unity and mutual love for one another in the Body of Christ; as we attempt to advance the Kingdom of God and make disciples of all the nations-we do not contend with people's hearts and minds; we contend with the spiritual forces of darkness. In this stirring book, Christians are called to realize that they have been drafted into God's army and are even now taking a part-be it as combatant, captive, victim, or an instrument of the enemy-in the war against Satan and his minions. Jackson seeks to uncover the spiritual forces at work within the spheres of geopolitical unrest, the deterioration of the family, and the warring forces within individuals. He encourages readers to find their places in Jesus Christ, connect with the Body of Christ, and use their gifts to achieve maximum impact for God's Kingdom.

5 out of 5 stars Defining Faith and Fine Tuning The Conscience.......2007-09-10

"Just acting like a normal Christian is an extremely radical thing to do"
      - Harry R. Jackson, Jr.

I give this book my highest recommendation.

This is the finest book on the topic implied in the title that I have read. It has some very practical and pragmatic advice about faith, conscience and the power or lack thereof in religion and/or a believers perception of such.

Here I will paraphrase what I deem to be the most important paragraph I personally have ever read concerning the concept of faith:

One of the problems with the concept of faith, as it is conceived of by many, is there is no clear distinction between attitude management techniques and what is purely Biblical faith or supernatural thinking if you will. Managing our attitudes is in fact very important- even essential to be an effective Christian, spiritual warrior or even just a good person. "be positive" motivational techniques , however, are not in themselves keys to releasing the supernatural power of God. The supernatural peace of God which comes from his tangible presence is able to do FAR more than a peace that comes from attitude management.

The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 3, A Prayer:
14 For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height-- 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Jackson goes on to write about the ways we can detect God's unction in our lives. here he cites what is called "twofold assurance":

      1. Our hearts assure us (conscience)

      2. The Holy Spirit within us

      James Madison once stated;

" Conscience is the most sacred of all property"

      Jackson explains;

The word conscience is not found in the Old Testament. The closest reference is found in Proverbs 20:27

"27 The lamp of the LORD searches the spirit of a man ; it searches out his inmost being."

Conversely, in the New Testament there are 30 references to conscience. The Greek word for conscience is suneidesis which is defined as an abiding consciousness whose nature it is to bear inner witness to one's own conduct in a moral sense. It is self awareness.

Speaking for myself I can state unequivocally that every time I have not listened to that small still voice that has said to me "don't do this" or "you ought to do that" trouble has ensued more times than not... sometimes BIG trouble. Judging by this acknowledgement alone I think it is safe to say that being out of touch with one's conscience can carry a heavy cost... perhaps even a lethal cost.

Jackson explains that you do not have to be a Christian or even a believer to have a conscience. It is something that is installed in every person because every person, whether they believe or acknowledge it or not, is made in the image of God. Conscience is the RULE of God imparted to every man and woman. In fact, those who have never heard the Gospel of Christ will in the end be judged by how they have responded to their own consciences.

On this Romans 2:14-16 says (Amplified Bible):

14 When Gentiles who have not the [divine] Law do instinctively what the Law requires, they are a law to themselves, since they do not have the Law.

15 They show that the essential requirements of the Law are written in their hearts and are operating there, with which their consciences (sense of right and wrong) also bear witness; and their [moral] decisions (their arguments of reason, their condemning or approving thoughts) will accuse or perhaps defend and excuse [them]

16 On that day when, as my Gospel proclaims, God by Jesus Christ will judge men in regard to the things which they conceal (their hidden thoughts).

Often people think of conscience as an afterthought, a twinge of guilt or remorse after the fact. However, conscience is a moral compass that is designed primarily for PREVENTION. As stated, in this sense, being out of touch with conscience and/or God can be disastrous for people, people groups or entire societies or civilizations.

The goal then is to harmonize, inasmuch as we are able, our consciences according to what God ordains as right and/or wrong. Jackson goes on to explain three ways in which this is accomplished:

      1. reproof and correction- we have to learn to receive correction from trusted, spiritual, strategic relationships.

      2. sincere repentance- we must embrace a re calibrated, redefined consciousness and lifestyle of repentance.

      3. Faith and comprehension- in the saving power of Christ and the raw power and genius of modeling our lives on his example. This includes understanding the aforementioned distinction between attitude management and or psychological crutches and the supernatural peace and tangible presence of God in one's life and/or mind.

Jackson then goes into six ways for a spiritual warrior to find or tap into supernatural inner strength and wisdom by FINE TUNING THE CONSCIENCE:

      1. Fight your way out of a siege- don't lose heart.

      2. Find the joy of camaraderie- cultivate strategic relationships.

      3. maintain ranks in the face of battle- in the midst of trials and triumphs alike, continue to keep the commandments of God.

      4. remember the BIG picture- focus on the glory of God during hardships and always remember the real enemy is not flesh but the forces of darkness in the spiritual realm.

      5. Use the power of consistent focus- always remember the goal... to maintain righteousness and make it to the Heavenly Kingdom of God.

      6. Stay connected to the source of joy- maintain an intense prayer life and communion with God... without this the vision and all the rest begins to fade.

The rest of "The Warrior's Heart: Rules of Engagement For The Spiritual War Zone" only gets deeper and better from there.

I personally count this offering as extremely valuable insight and information. I hope you do too.
