5 out of 5 stars breathe deeply..........2006-07-07

This is basically a calender-a date on each page followed by an inspiring quote, a short page long (or less) essay/parable/real life story, a short prayer and an affirmation-rendering this book super-easy to read no matter how super-busy you are.
Although God and Jesus are referenced many times in this, and his other-Dare to be Yourself book, it shouldn't affect the healing these books are offering-anyone could read them-it's a live and let live deal.
You may want to keep some highlighter pens on hand. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Another beautiful addition to Alan's work.......2006-03-10

I love anything by Alan, and I lemjoy this book for its daily message format. I pick it up at the end of the day or when I feel a spiritual boost, turn to the date and read the passage. He never fails to uplift my spirit and help me get back on track. This would make a lovely gift.

5 out of 5 stars True Daily Inspiration.......2005-10-07

I've been reading daily meditations for many years but this one surpasses them all. I bought a bunch for those friends and relatives who are interested and they rave about it, too. Top-notch, first class book. You won't regret your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Still good the third time around.......2003-06-14

I hadn't looked at this book for a few years and recently started reading it again for the third or fourth time. There are some days when the reading doesn't really touch me and other days when it's exactly what I need to hear. I've attended three short seminars given by Alan and find him to be a loveable, real human being. I stayed around after one of the seminars and went out with a small group to have dinner with him. There are some 'teachers' who seem to don a mantle of self-importance and wouldn't consider breaking bread with a lowly seminar attendee. Alan is certainly not one of them. So, five stars to Alan and all of his books.

2 out of 5 stars A pablum approach to heart-centered living . . ........2002-10-21

This book came to me highly recommended, so I was doubly disappointed. Cohen does better in his other books, but this one is "spirituality lite," big time. The format is standard for this genre: A page for every day, with a catchy title. A quotation to spark your interest . . . his sources are varied, and this part is okay, though not particularly inspiring. music, contemporary writers, scriptures, with the most prevalent being "A Course in Miracles." Then comes a thought-provoking paragraph or two . . . and here the disappointment takes hold. Cohen tells obviously-created stories which he claims come from his personal experience, or trite examples from the lives of famous people. Sometimes he quotes stories from world religious traditions without attributing his sources (as on June 12 where he tells the well known Buddhist tale about the man and the tiger, stopping to taste a strawberry as he falls).

Next comes a prayer/meditation. These are good. If you do buy the book, turn first to these italicized sections near the bottom of each page. May 7, for example, "Spirit of Love, open my heart. Help me to be at peace with all my relationships . . . " Then an affirmation, and these range from excellent (as on May 7, "I create peace with my loved ones and myself" to the banal (July 10 - "God's timing is perfect.").

Save your money. Choose another book for your daily meditations.

Book Description

Samantha Carlyle knows someone is watching her—someone who wants her dead. So she runs to the safety of her tiny Texas hometown, and to the sweet, haunting memories of John Thomas Knight. A dedicated small-town sheriff as tender as he is tough, John Thomas was Samantha's best friend, her first love—and now he is her only chance. Fate has carried them down different roads, but the fire has never died—and the passion flares white-hot the moment their eyes meet again. But this time Samantha must trust the proud, strong, devastatingly handsome lawman with more than her heart—she must trust him with her life. Because there is another man who wants her, and he's waiting for the right time to strike. And the next sweet, sensuous kiss she and John Thomas share could well be Samantha's last.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great plot, but.............2003-08-15

I had a hard time deciding on the number of stars for this review. On one hand, the love story was a great one, and the characters were likeable, the conflict believable, and the ending very satisfying.

What brought the score down was the odd anachronisms that kept jerking me out of the story. Here are just a few examples:

1) This book was first published in 1996, but we're told that Sam, who worked in a big Hollywood casting agency, used a typewriter, not a computer, for her work. Surely not. I think the author used a typewriter because she needed to use the uniqueness of typewriters in her evidence. She took the easy way out rather than doing research to find an alternative plot point.

2) The police, even when given pretty solid evidence that Sam was being stalked, not only dismiss the evidence out of hand, but they give it all back to her when she asks for it.

3) The police don't even attempt to use technology to trap the stalker, but the stalker somehow is able to follow Sam and Johnny back to a tiny little town in Texas. The FLEW there - how did the stalker find out where? Has the stalker access to better resources than the police?

4) When Johnny calls the LA cop with the name of the stalker, the cop recognizes the name immediately - even though the police didn't investigate the stalking enough to have developed a list of suspects. I got the feeling the author expected us to believe this cop knows everyone in town. I can believe that of Johnny and Cotton, Texas, but in Los Angeles???? I don't think so.

Another reviewer mentioned the fact that Sam could easily have carried a cell phone - I don't know about that (I didn't have one myself until 2000), but that is one more instance where the author used plot devises that fit more in an eighties book than a modern one.

As I said, though, the story itself is a very nice one, and if you can suspend disbelief enough to get past these lapses in technological know-how, you should enjoy this book.

Ms Sala has written another book with a similar plot that I actually like better, though: Tallchief, written under her penname Dinah McCall. I think it is a better book all around.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book.......2003-03-22

I won't go over the book again, since the other reveiwers
have covered it quite well. There are some stretches of
the imagination required to completely "get" this book.
For instance, it's hard to believe Sam never kept in touch
with ANYONE in her hometown and so didn't have any idea
what had become of her first love. One also wonders why
Sam doesn't have a cell phone. But that aside, I loved
these characters so much they make up for a few weaknesses
in the plot. John Thomas is strong and dependable, and his
obvious love for Sam, even as he tries to fight it, is touching.
Sam is funny and bright and not afraid to lean on him.
The supporting characters are interesting as well, although
the story primarily centers on Johnny and Sam. The suspense
is pretty good and the stalker almost impossible to guess.

I would love to see these two characters show up in another
of Ms. Sala's books just for an update on their story.

A really good read.

5 out of 5 stars Sharon Has Done It Again!.......2003-02-11

What can I say Ms Sala has done it again. She has managed to pen an emotionally charged read.

Samantha Carlyle and John Thomas (Johnny) have a past. Together they grew up, they were best friends, and before Johnny went away to boot camp they became lovers for one night but circumstances beyond their control seperated them. Both promised to always be there for each other. Samantha calles on her best childhood friend to come and save her. Someone is stalking her in Hollywood and no one not even the police believe there is someone out there wanting to kill her.

John Thomas receives the letter calling for his help and he does not hesitate to get on a plane for L.A. in order to help the only girl that he has ever loved.

John Thomas takes Samantha back home to Texas. He is a sheriff of a small town and feels that he can keep Sam safe if she is away from L.A. Once in Texas they start remembering the past that they both shared. They are both fighting feeling that are powerful and deep. At the same time it looks like the stalker has followed them to Texas. Samantha is now on edge and fearing for her life.

This was a wonderful read. I love Ms. Sala's characters since they are very believable and you find yourself falling in love with them as you read their story. I found myself surprised by whom the stalker was and was unable to guess it until the very end. Be prepared to feel all the emotions that this book touches on.

4 out of 5 stars 3 & 1/2 stars........2000-08-16

Samantha Carlyle has made it big in Hollywood, & she is also being stalked by a very clever enemy. The police & all her friends believe it's just a selfish publicity stunt because all the phonecalls, letters, etc. can be traced back to her in some way. At the end of her rope, Sam asks her childhood hero & former lover John Knight to believe in her. After narrowly escaping from an attempt on her life, Sheriff Knight decides to take her to a more secure environment--specifically, to HIS house in their old hometown. Because their bittersweet past ended in so much pain, they both try not to 'fall' for each other again. However, 'Fate' seems to have its own agenda...

Overall the story is pretty good, well-written & full of feeling. The main characters seem very real & had great chemistry. Unfortunately, I found myself greatly disappointed in who the villain turned out to be (even though I didn't guess it until the end). This one started out great but then the 'action' tapered off...Ms. Sala's other works are much better.

Product Description

Hudson survived his perilous maiden voyage to his beloved China. With his heart set in determined obedience to God, and trusting the provision of the One who had called, Hudson overcame persecution and almost overwhelming personal losses to bring to bring God's truth to the "ripe harvest fields" of China.
Today, Hudson Taylor's story continues to challenge and inspire believers young and old to carry the anchoring gospel message, regardless of personal trial or hardships, to those who are adrift and without hope.

It's up to you if you want to get a picture of the struggles of Hudson Taylor on several fronts. He had to hear from God himself to endure the pressures of his calling. "Back to Jersusalem" is a movement that has it's roots in Hudson's ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary Value.......2003-01-31

An adventure story about an early unconventional missionary!!This is a great read aloud book for older elementary age children and up. Although the setting is middle 1800s, the lessons are timeless. A great way to teach your children the difficulties faced by early missionaries, (5 1/2 dangerous months at sea just to get to China) and their complete reliance upon God to surmount seemingly impossible challenges. Although Taylor's faith is great, even he is surprised by the continual rescues and provisions that are clearly God orchestrated. My children thought it started slowly, but got more exciting when he finally reached China! Even adults will enjoy listening. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

In the fall of 1997, Michael Johnston went to the rural Mississippi Delta — the "deep heart's core" of the South — as a member of the Teach for America program, to become an English teacher in one of the poorest districts in the nation. At Greenville High School, he confronted a racially divided world in which his African-American students had to struggle daily against a legacy of crippling poverty and the scourges of drug addiction and gang violence that ravaged their community. In the Deep Heart's Core tells the story of how Johnston reached out to inspire his teenage students with all the means at his disposal — from the language of the great poets to the strategies of chess to the vigor of athletics. Vibrantly alive with the rich atmosphere of the Mississippi Delta — the haunting beauty of its hollows and the aching tragedy of its history — In the Deep Heart's Core is a compassionate, eloquent, and profoundly moving book. It is an inspiring and unforgettable story of one young man's experience in the Teach for America program, and of how a new generation of teachers is reaching out to give hope to the students society has forgotten.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What happens to schools when society implodes..........2007-08-06

I found Johnston's story both fascinating and disturbing. As a Mississippian, I have witnessed first-hand the negative impact that societal breakdown has on many of our state's schools. I also know that the same problems exist in Brooklyn, Compton, Miami, etc. Mississippi, in particular, has been devastated over the past forty years by the dependence of many of it's citizens on the largese of government. Greenville is a case in point. It's past time for some tough love. The government has in effect become an enabler of the worst sorts of behaviors. The resultant pathologies flow into the schools. Johnston experienced a little piece of hell but made the best of it. He is an impressive fellow and has a real story to tell.

2 out of 5 stars Johnston Does Not Reach The Core.......2007-03-07

Michael Johnston dwells in great detail upon the most negative aspects of his assignment at Greenville High School. It's a wonder that he lasted one month with such filters for negativity. When you are trained as an educator you are expected to go forth with all of your positive energy and your motivational tools to work in your chosen environment. Nobody chained Johnston and sent him to Greenville. It was his choice. He emerges more as a self-validating mercenary than he does as an educator. He arrived in Greenville as a beneficiary instilled with tools to deal with his assignment. He had the mental capacity. He had the resourcefulness. What he lacked was the compassion to admit that even at Greenville High School the good students outnumbered the bad. I know this because I also previously worked at Greenville High School. Many Teach For America Teachers come to the Delta and perform with astonishing results. Johnston knew before he ever arrived in Greenville that he was sent there to accept a difficult assignment that his preparation had been based upon. His book illustrates that he was a neophyte who was beaten down by his own weaknesses when he was asked to step up and perform what he was trained to do. There remains some resentment against Johnston because he chose to emphasize more negative than positive. His writing ability is on either side of the spectrum as far as ability. There are moments of inspiration and there are moments of a lost child who is frustrated because he is unsure of how to step up as a teacher. It is truly disappointing that Johnston neglected to even mention so many of the good things about Greenville High and how he had so many opporunities to be more of a positive influence than he was. Johnston also departed soon after his obligation was complete. In any community there are negatives and positives. Drugs and violence can be found in any community if you look far enough. Even the most affluent schools have violence. Colorado, California, Florida, Kentucky and Washington are the proof of that. One can only hope that Johnston is now preparing educators and not another self-validating mercenary.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Worth reading more than once!.......2007-01-05

Michael Johnston is a talented writer, a balanced author and a teacher who truly cares. His account of his two years teaching is a must read for any teacher. Parents can also benefit from reading this incredible work to learn more about what their children or their children's classmates may face at school. Although this book is set in the Delta, students all over the U.S. face these same challenges. I have seen it in my work with high schools in Colorado. This is an outstanding work that I will read again and again, because each time I know I will gain even more from doing so.

4 out of 5 stars A guided tour through the separate but unequal rural south.......2005-12-20

Teach For America continues to generate interest in the educational field. I'm still waiting for a book that offers some rigorous, readable analysis of Teach For America and its alums. As it stands, books like "In the Deep Heart's Core" stand as helpful testimony to the pros of cons and TFA. I believe that TFA is filled with people like Johnston who are idealists with amazing talents and concern for their students. I continue to be saddened at the level of shock these teachers feel when they actually encounter real students and real school administrators. Johnston was not adequately prepared to teach, and his lack of structure in his first days of school shows this. He does, however, show the compassion for his students and flexibility to adapt necessary to experience some successes during his two year stay. Learning about students like Chico and Corelle helps to put some real stories behind many of the test score statistics that we see in the papers. Like all good teachers, Johnston grows as he begins to further engage with his students in areas like chess and track. By the end of the book, his classroom is a refuge for students who do not get adequate instruction in other classes. Whether this is self-congratulatory or not, I do not know. I do feel that Johnston grows from his experience, and I take him at his word that the school he worked in is beginning to make progress.

I remain torn about Teach for America's impact in these rural schools. On the one hand, they bring talent, energy, and a goal of academic rigor. On the other hand, many of their recruits look at the job, like Johnston probably does, as a steppingstone to greater things [Johnston works in training principals]. I hope that teachers read this book to gain some inspiration, and I hope that the strengths and weaknesses of teachers like Johnston will help schools to better identify the talent and diversity they need to achieve lasting success.

4 out of 5 stars Heartfelt and eye-opening.......2005-08-09

Few books I've read have made such a profound impression on me, and I encourage everyone interested in social issues to have a look. The reason I give this book 4 stars and not 5 is because it has the most egregious lack of editing I have ever seen in a book--and I read lots of books! There are basic mistakes ("her mother" when talking about a boy; one paragraph repeated twice) and grammatical errors all over the place, distracting what otherwise is an excellent book.

I attended a public school in a very small town. Classes were at most 20 students, and that not only allowed teachers to give more personal attention, but also created less disruption that comes whenever many teenagers get together. Like me, students had grown up in an environment that valued education, and although individual lives might have turmoil, the town as a whole didn't have so many other things to worry about. Reading this book was an eye-opener into the disparity in public education.

It would have been great to hear more stories, but I think Michael Johnston did the right thing by chosing depth over breadth, portraying a few students in detail rather than the classroom as a whole. Johnston threw himself into the lives of these students, and although he takes partial credit for the successes, he also acknowledges those who didn't end up doing so well. He conveys the individuality in the students and shows that not all stories are despondent, and not all stories are happy endings. The students' tales have really stayed with me, and I was left wondering what happened to many of them and would love to get an update.

Johnston makes you realize the enormous challenges faced by teachers (and students) in Greenville. Teachers like Johnston want to block out all the negative messages the students get from society, from their peers, and sometimes from their role models. They want to end the racial strife that has caused a lot of distrust in both directions. They want to believe that they'll make a difference to every student. But the problems run so deep that even a whole school of well-meaning teachers may not be able to turn things around because the causes of the problems extend far beyond the school, the community, and the present time. They might help one or two or a dozen students, but at the end of the year, Greenville is just as challenging a place to grow up. It's telling that Johnston didn't expound upon what can be done to reduce the enormous disparities in public education--he's far more aware of the problem now, but perhaps even more confused about the solution.

5 out of 5 stars The best available intro to Tuvan music - if you can find it.......2002-09-28

I've got several CDs of Tuvan music, and this one is the best introduction for someone new to the subject. Tuva is a small region in Russian Asia, nestled in the mountains between Siberia and Mongolia. Herders who got bored spending their days in the countryside on horseback developed throat-singing, in which a singer can sing two notes at once, a low drone and a higher melody. The high part is produced from the overtones of the low note. The style began with a cappella singing, then was extended to include music on banjo- and violin-like instruments, with a rhythm like American cowboy music. This CD includes plenty of songs by Kongar-ool Ondar and Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, two of the first Tuvans to tour America. There are several examples of various styles of hoomei (the Tuvan word for throat-singing--the English spelling of this and ALL Tuvan words varies from album to album), including by an 11-year-old student of Ondar's. There are examples of modern variations on Tuvan music, including the title track from the "Fly, Fly My Sadness" collaboration album between Tuvan group Huun-Huur-Tu and the Bulgarian women's choir Angelite. And there is Paul Pena, the blind American blues singer (and writer of Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner") who learned throat-singing on his own and won an award at a Tuvan throat-singing festival, as chronicled in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Genghis Blues". (The CD suggests that it includes a live version of Pena's award-winning performance, but doesn't explain how he could be playing two guitars at once.) My only complaint with the CD is that there is too much of Mikhail Alperin's Tuvan-Russian hybrid projects (4 tracks), and not enough traditional Tuvan songs done with instruments, especially the banjo-like doshpuluur. A perfect Tuvan compilation would include the caravan-drivers' song ("Tying Siirtuktiilerining Iri") and "Ches Bulungum"; for those, look for the CD "Tuva: Voices from the Land of the Eagles".

What makes this CD a better choice than "Land of the Eagles" is the 64-page book on Tuva that is included in the "Deep in the Heart" package. It provides an introduction to Tuvan history and culture, important notes on cuisine (like a recipe for blood sausage, and how to prepare and serve the honored dish "Fat of Lamb's Tail"), and simple explanations of how to throat-sing. For example, to perform the whistling sound of the sygyt style of hoomei, put your mouth in the position to make the sound "ur" as in "urn", tighten your throat, and do a Kermit the Frog impersonation as you sing "ur-ee, ur-ee". Now go practice.

4 out of 5 stars good insight into Tuvan music, both traditional and modern.......1997-11-01

Although I prefer The Orphan's Lament by Huun Huur Tu, Deep in the Heart of Tuva provides much more information on Tuvan culture and the background of Tuvan music than does any other Tuvan CD. The accompanying book is very nicely done but the section on how throat-singing is accomplished could be better executed (although currently I know of nothing better). This CD is not traditional although it features several traditional numbers--it also has several numbers which show clearly how Tuvans (and non-Tuvans as well) are blending traditional elements with western influences to create results that can appeal to both cultures. If you want to hear true mastery get The Orphan's Lament; if you want a good overview and are not familiar with Tuvan music this is the CD for you.

5 out of 5 stars You have to hear it to believe it........1997-07-27

After reading the Feynman/Leighton books, especially Tuva or Bust, this CD/book is a must. Tuvan throat singing has to be heard to be believed. It's actually beautiful when you become used to it. It is a wonderful companion to the Ralph Leighton's Tuva or Bust book. Reading the book first helps you appreciate this CD/book. I play it for my students. In 5 years, I have never heard a negative comment about the Feynman/Leighton books being required reading in my courses. (My courses are in finance)

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-30

This book really ministered to me. It was the first book I've completely finished in a long time. I would recommend this to women, who have dealt with many disappointments in life, that can stunt your growth. This book exposed the lies we tend to believe and the strongholds that can develop. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommended it to all my friends.

5 out of 5 stars YOU CAN TRIUMPH OVER LIFE'S DISAPPOINTMENTS!.......1999-04-21

Every Christian woman can identify with this Carol Kent book. It lets us admit that life isn't perfect and gives positive, practical and scriptural advice for facing those disappointments. Kent first invites us to explore our deepest longings and recognize where the reality of life has fallen short of our expectations. She then encourages us not to lose hope or become embittered, but rather to take positive action by teaching how to run those unfulfilled longings through a scripturally based values grid. "By acknowledging and evaluating our passions, we can discover how to lead a much more honest, focused, fulfilling and purposeful life--a life based on eternal values." (Kent, 1990) I highly recommend the book and also the study guide for small group use.

Zarafa was a gentle 19th-century giraffe, a simple animal whose life was dictated by the tumultuous times around her. From the African savanna where she was caught and tamed as an infant, Zarafa was shipped down the Nile--along with the meat of her mother and several hundred human slaves--to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. From there she sailed on to France, a gift from Muhammad Ali, the "Renaissance Barbarian" viceroy of Egypt, intended to distract King Charles X while Egyptian forces invaded Greece. As political ploy, it didn't work. But as ambassador from an exotic land, this odd animal captivated the French people for almost two decades, as she lived out her life as part of the royal menagerie.

Michael Allin intertwines natural history with a brutal chapter in the history of civilization, augmenting the clarity of both. This story of one docile animal contrasts sharply with those of the human profiteers, warmongers, and interlopers who ultimately decide her fate. But Zarafa's otherworldly charm also helps us to understand the intrigue that led Napoleon to bring not only his troops, but a small army of European intellectuals to study all aspects of Egyptian culture and history, in the invasion that sets up her story. --Lauran Cole Warner

4 out of 5 stars good easy read.......2006-06-01

it was a bit rambling or else i would have given it 5 stars, and i would have liked a little more information on giraffes, per se., its a definte read

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't Finish.......2006-04-20

I gave this book up after a hundred or so pages without the giraffe in question showing up.

5 out of 5 stars The best little read..........2004-10-25

This is the best history story... keeps your interest all the way through and you'll be sorry when the read is over.... a must read!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful True Tale of Giraffe's Journey Up The Nile..........2004-02-25

...across the Mediteranean, and through the countryside of France, and into Paris! This great little book will be enjoyed for many years to come by people of all ages. Just transporting this bulky beast was enough of a headache, but fortunately its demeanor was (usually) cool, calm, and collected. In 1826, how could this animal set upon such a long, difficult journey? You'll learn in this book! And the French were enthalled by this animal, so unique from all other animals in creation. The "Zarafa" became the center of a huge tourist industry attracting throngs of well-wishers and curiousity seekers for over a thousand miles! Like today's Super Bowl or Academy Awards, all kinds of momenta were made to celebrate (and earn a few francs) this singular giraffe, including clothes, and pottery. A great value and a fine book!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating history lesson.......2003-05-16

Heard the taped version of ZARAFA by Michael Allin, the true story of how a giraffe in 1826 got from Africa to become the first such animal ever seen in France . . . she was a royal offering from Muhammad Ali, Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt, to King
Charles X of France, presented in the hopes of keeping the French out of Ali's war against the Greeks . . . although her arrival did not accomplish its intended task, Zarafa did become an instant celebrity and fascinated all of Europe for the next 18 years.

Although the tale skipped around a bit too much, I did find it a fascinating history lesson . . . what's more, it gave me a good look at what publicity was all about--back in the nineteenth century . . . and it made me appreciate the herculean effort that took place in moving this magnificent creature such a distance.

Book Description

We live in a world where rock superstars, athletes, celebrities, and successful business people are paraded across the big screen and featured on the news as though beauty and fame and money and power made them modern-day heroes. We seem to have lost sight of what a real hero is.

Yet America needs true heroes now more than ever. Not Supermen with super hero powers, but real men and women of character who will stand up and with conviction, make right and often hard choices in every circumstance. People who show us what it is to be good, to be brave, to be guided by conscience and character. Men and women who are examples, whose courage shows us the way we should go.

Congressman Jim Ryun has provided a wealth of stories of quiet historical heroes who have, for the most part, been ignored by popular culture and nearly lost in the mist of the past. This book is not about popular heroes or cultural icons such as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. These heroes were common people who stood firm in the face of tyranny, to give their lives for others, and to right the wrongs of social injustice. Their stories will inspire you to rise up to slay the dragons of your world.

5 out of 5 stars Basics Blinded by the Lights.......2006-01-15

Often blinded by the lights, bells and whistles of what appears to offer the best and brightest among us and often leaves the basics of character, judgement and morality the sad consequence of being left behind in the race for popularity, power and wealth. Seldom is loyalty among those qualities.

Like a Christmas tree usurping the real meaning that Christmas was meant to observe, commercialization is often the outcome praised and enviable that ignores the lasting quality of more altruistic ideals or grandeur of simplicity that formed the anchor for such celebrations.

The ability to keep foresight and hindsight allows the abilities of real heroes to maintain their luster despite the lures of momentary treasures and excitement of temporary thrills.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Motivating.......2002-07-29

Heroes Among Us describes the lives of lesser-known heroes who found the courage to stand up and give their all for what they believed to be right. Some stood on battle fields, some in court rooms, some in mission fields. All made a difference in the world that we know today. Written by Congressman Jim Ryun, former Olympic runner, devout Christian and hero in his own right, Heroes Among Us will inspire and motivate readers to find the hero within themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic and Suspensful - All-in-all a great read!!.......2002-12-15

In DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS, Miranda is the pampered rich man's daughter, and Jacob is a fugitive wanted for the murders of his wife and son five years ago. In the beginning, we find Miranda in a dark and dreary room, and Miranda knowing that she was going to die. The "hermit" aka Jacob, but we don't know that yet, finds her and sets her free. Spikes, the man who kidnapped her and works as her father's foreman, is determined to find her. The hermit hides her, then, after she begs him, tells her that he'll take her within a mile of the ranch so that Spikes can't find her. On their first night, Spikes "finds" them, and lets it slip that someone in her family did this to her. On the two day trek to her home, she and Jacob grow closer. He tells her about how his wife and son were killed, which was absolutely heartbreaking, and that he's wanted for their murders. Miranda tells him right away she can't believe that. When they get to the ranch, she rides off, with Jacob watching. When she hears gunfire, she rides back and is shot. I'm not going to spoil the story more than I already have, except to tell you that the secrets that come out of the Maddox family (Miranda's) when they try to find out who kidnapped Miranda were prety amusing. I thought Ms. Warren wrote a very romantic love story and a very suspensful mystery.
Is probably the best book I've ever read. I can't wait to read Lucas' story!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, wow - You will love this one!.......2001-10-30

Miranda is the pampered and protected daughter of a millionaire rancher. Then she gets kidnapped and hidden in the woods, deep in the Texas Hill Country.
Her [and your] first introduction to Jacob Culver, a fugitive who is living in the Hill Country, for the past five years is a bit spooky. Jacob was framed for the murder of his wife and young son.
Jacob's finding and protecting of Miranda really changes his life. He is aided and abetted by a little dog called "Bandit" ---
You will love this one and won't be able to put it down. --- I do believe it should be rated a keeper. Highly recommended. But then I love those Texans.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful book!.......2000-08-09

I loved reading this book. The suspense and mystery mixed with the romance was a great combination. It is always amazing to see how somenone who grows up in the lap of luxury can take to a normal lifestyle.
