3 out of 5 stars A Hunger Like No Other.......2007-09-19

Although I found this book to be enjoyable, it did not require or engage my entire attention. I was able to read it at work between calls and was able to keep up with what was happening. This book to me seemed to drag at times and at other times moved along. I am not yet certain if it is going to stay in my collection or be passed on. I have not yet started the second book in the series although I will read it and have purchased the third book. It just did not reach out and grab me.

4 out of 5 stars So So.......2007-09-14

I liked the start of the book but after a while it was a little fustrating. It took for ever for them to have sex. The theme was good and the charters are enjoyable. I think the charter Emma went a little overboard by playing really had to get. Took her for ever to come around. However, I still plan to read the rest of the series.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy, Daring, but Something's Missing.......2007-09-01

I could hardly put this book down, especially the spicy scenes, which were written perfectly! And the plot of the book was believeable, and well-written.

But when Emmaline and Lachlain finally come together, the book immedietly goes downhill. Even when they finally have sex, the scene is too short, and not nearly as descriptive as previous scene. From there on is just plot, we don't get any more sexy situations!

And perhaps this is just me, but Emmaline's Valkyrie family were the MOST obnoxious characters I have EVER read in a book. Their logic, tactics, and personalities were grating and flat.

However, I still give the book 4 stars because all other aspects were amazing, and I definitely intend to read more in the series!!!

5 out of 5 stars My first paranormal romance and ....I loved it!!.......2007-08-25

I usually read historical romances (medieval, Georgian, regency & Victorian), but the trend in romance seems to be going in the paranormal direction so I figured I'd give one a try. I was seriously afraid of what I call "rolling eyes syndrome" ; some things are just unbelievable and I was hoping that this wasn't going to be just a bad B-movie read.

I am so surprised! I love this book! It reminds of some of my fav Scottish romances, but MUCH more intense and WAY edgier/darker! The alpha male hero is totally hot Scottish highlander hunk (a real treat for this Julie Garwood fan) and the heroine is this a shy little thing who eventually turns into a kick a*s woman. There's werewolf's, vampire's, Valkyrie, witches, wraiths etc., and Cole (author) does a excellent job introducing and giving background information on each one of these. She does this so well that I became instantly engrossed in the book and simply couldn't put it down. There are tons of really cool secondary characters that each have their own unique powers and personally I can't wait for those sequels!

So if you like historical romance or contemporary for that matter, this is a great place to start checking out paranormals. As for me, I have a feeling this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-08-20

This is a great book. The character's are so well developed. You really feel like you know these people.

I gave this to my husband and he loved it. It is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Must read!.......2007-07-23

I can't recommend this highly enough. TEN STARS! Men who are or will be husbands, I strongly suggest you place reading this on your to-do list only after reading the Bible itself. Of course you will have to actually put the ideas into practice - small steps are always better than no steps!

5 out of 5 stars Gary Smalley has Godly Insight into Having a Loving Marriage........2007-06-13

If you read this book with an open mind, with the mindset that you could do better as a husband, this book will rock your world.

When I read this book I was under the impression that he had intimate knowledge of what was wrong with my marriage! This was over 10 years ago and I have to say I still refer to this book from time to time. The insight Smalley offers into the male and female psyches is uncanny. He knows exactly why women are the way they are and how men, through their woefull lack of understand of gender differnces, exacerbate the problem.

I have recommended this book to so many people I ought to get a commission. But I believe and have experienced the fruit of applying the understanding of this book in my own life and marriage.

Whether you have been married 4 months or 40 years, this book, and the companion volume "For Better or Best" will show you how to have a Godly marriage based on trust, committment, and love.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Smalley will help you!.......2007-05-16

Gary Smalley has written an insightful book that is helping men understand their wives. The ideas in this book will compliment the ideas found in The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His! - another book that is available here on Amazon.com

If you need a miracle of change in your marriage, order both of these books!

While the suggestions in this book weren't very applicable to my situation the underlying principles were. It opened my eyes to what I was doing to drive my wife away and helped me grow emotionally. Got me to where I needed to be to save my marriage.

Book Description

Breaking new ground in women's psychology, an exploration of the intricacy, friction, and love in the bonds between sisters.

Relationships between women are often freighted with a rocky mix of emotions—devotion and disregard, affection and loathing, admiration and envy—leading to anguish and confusion on the playground, in the home, and in the boardroom. A woman's experience negotiating her layered feelings toward a sister shapes her psychology as forcefully as do her relationships with her parents. By exploring sisterhoods, Terri Apter reveals their key role in understanding all relationships among women. In a series of compelling interviews, Apter considers the many aspects of the sister relationship from birth through adulthood. The need to fight to differentiate oneself from a sister, as well as the protectiveness one feels for that same person, is explained by reference to extensive psychological and biological evidence. Not only women with sisters will be enlightened by this original book: The Sister Knot sheds light on all relationships between women.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars enlightening and reassuring.......2007-03-16

a wonderful and fresh account of sisters' complex feelings, warm and funny and so helpful!

5 out of 5 stars complex relationship.......2007-03-05

A thorough analysis of the complex relationship between sisters. Makes a good case for the differences between sister/sister, brother/sister and brother/brother bonds and conflicts. I especially like how she de-pathologizes the rivalry between siblings. Anyone who wants insight into the sister bond, and especially, I believe, parents of sisters would learn a lot from this book.

2 out of 5 stars Get this one from the library.......2007-01-31

As a middle sister, I was excited to hear Apter's discussion about her book on NPR. Unfortunately, the best parts of the book were all covered by Apter in her book tour interviews, the book itself was anticlimactic.

Apter has conducted interviews with a number of sisters at various ages and stages of their lives. In the book she dissects the interviews and features tidbits to illustrate certain sibling theories well-known in the genre of psychological literature. This is all ground that has been explored before by other researchers and writers. I found the writing to be stilted and overly academic for a popular treatment of the subject matter. It would have helped for us to have a more thorough family background for the siblings quoted. As it was, Apter failed to interest me in whatever these people were saying, because I wasn't given much of a context for their comments.

I really cannot recommend this book for purchase. It would be best to get this one from the library, if you are interested in the subject matter.

Book Description

Is sex more work than play in your marriage? Do you schedule it in like a dentist appointment? Do you make love once a month, twice at the most? If you answered yes to these questions, you are among the forty million Americans trapped in a low-sex or no-sex marriage.

Now there is help from nationally acclaimed sex and marital experts Barry and Emily McCarthy, who for years have helped couples break down the barriers that have developed between them, and rebuild closeness and longing. Their groundbreaking ten-step program is designed to get sex and intimacy back into these marriages and revitalize relationships. Crafted by years of clinical practice, Rekindling Desire first shows couples how to root out the "poisons" that inhibit sexual desire: shame, guilt, anger, passivity, as well as medical side effects and physical dysfunctions. With sensitivity and tact, the McCarthys then lay out concrete techniques and effective strategies that help couples increase sexual awareness, confront inhibitions, revitalize desire, and integrate intimacy and eroticism.

An exciting new way to spark and sustain desire, Rekindling Desire confronts the secrecy and stigma of low-sex and no-sex marriages, teaching couples how to enjoy a fulfilling, life-long sexual partnership.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top notch for couples in trouble or professionals alike.......2007-09-27

This book adressess a much ignored subject and provides a wealth of clinical material as well as a step by step guide for solving a very common and destructive problem.

1 out of 5 stars Robotic Sex.......2007-01-13

The idea of rekindling desire, especially sexual desire is a worthy goal but it is not accomplished by the techniques listed in this book. They have identified a problem, explained it to a fare-thee-well, and alas, have come up with no genuine permanent solutions.

A word like "pleasuring" could only be concocted by an academic who lives
to sell a how-to book, regardless of its merits. "Non-whatever pleasuring" is a tortured use of language and merely turns one further off. How many of us, when things were hopping, ever thought about it as "pleasuring"? Never in language like this.

To 'rekindle' desire may be an impossible goal past a certain age. If it were possible to desire something once again, anything one valued in the past, it will take more than a read thru this tome. Take some real and greater pleasure in saving your money.

Taking pleaasure of any kind, desiring something ardently, uncontrollably is likely a neuro-chemical reaction in the brain which has somehow short-circuited over time, amidst the daily grind of human endeavor and which could likely be 'rekindled' only with an effective aphrodisiac, a selective amnesia, and/or a return to an innocent state. I'd opt for the Aphrodisiac.

Many eons ago a famous writer asked, "How does one get Love to stay?" My guess is what he really meant was how does one get Lust to recur throughout one's life.

The only thing for sure is that this book provides no answer, but instead begs the question.

5 out of 5 stars Rekindling Desire: A Step by Step Program to Help Low-Sex and No-Sex Marriages.......2007-01-11

The insight revealed to me through this book was truly life changing. It is a guide to help couples change the way they view their expectations of long term, marital sexuality and put a new, healthy perspective into practice in order to renew and energize a most necessary and wonderful part of their marriage. With the knowledge I gained from this book, along with lots of prayer and a little relationship counseling, I was able to take what years of shame and social stigma had me convinced was the "normal" way to participate in a marriage and exchange it for a positive and loving character that encouraged me to love my husband emotionally, spiritually and physically without preconceived expectations or fear - including fear of rejection. Our once nearly dead marriage has taken a fresh new breath of life.

4 out of 5 stars Good to spark thoughtful conversation.......2007-01-09

The McCarthy's book is helpful to get the conversation started about low-sex marriage. However, it requires two willing or somewhat willing partners. Throughout the book he recommends getting a sexual therapist involved which is helpful if you live in a mdetropolitan area with that sort of resource. Their exercises are somewhat helpful but are not a menu of step by step. It is more of a conceptual exercise on how to assess where you are at and what the next steps might be to make things better between you both.

Recommended

1 out of 5 stars If your partner's Menopausal, save your money, buy "racy" DVDs instead........2006-03-21

Very little offered in this book about what to do for the ravages of Menopause, except "take more time and use lots of LUBE".
Once the hormones are gone, so's any motivation your partner might have had to get things back on track.
Barry keeps telling us that WE are responsible for our OWN sexuality, and that you have a RIGHT to be sexual, but when your partner's more motivated over the cat hucking up a hairball instead salvaging your relationship, Oh, Well. Perhaps in a future edition the McCarthys should add an additional catagory to marriages that should get a "mercy killing": the "I'm done with that foolishness, and you should be, too" marriage.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2007-04-11

I think I'm still a little burned out on the romance novels, but I wanted a light, fluffy read. And I definitely got it. Light, fluffy, predictable, shallow. Your typical mid-quality romance novel. Not the worst I've ever read, but nowhere near the best, either.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe 4 & 1/2 stars; excellent resolution to series.......2004-07-31

Each book in this trilogy improved upon the last. Readers of the first 2 books will welcome Nicola's turn at love -- and will enjoy meeting "The Gentleman" highwayman again. Although Jack's distrust of Nicola is sometimes annoying, his sensitivity and goodness overcome it. Their passion ignites the pages, and the suspense is dealt with a sure hand.

The saga of evil Richard is concluded satisfactorily, and it is indeed pleasant to have all the main players from the first two books here to take a hand in the outcome. Justice prevails, true love reigns supreme, and the good are rewarded with happiness.

After reading this one, I would consider rereading book 1 to see if I'd rate it higher now. I am left, thanks to book three, with a very pleasant, satisfied feeling.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!.......2002-03-25

I have enjoyed all books by Candace Camp, Kristan James and Lisa Gregory. Her Lisa Gregory books, Rainbow Season and Rainbow Promise, are classics. However, this book, although a different local and time period is equally as good. For those who enjoy this book, look up some of her other books. You'll find yourself a Camp fan.

5 out of 5 stars No Other Love.......2001-07-05

This book is fantastic reading. This is the last book of a 3-book series written by Candace Camp. The first one is "A stolen heart" and the second book is "Promise me tomorrow". The characters of her books are vividly written and seemingly alive. The story of the series is about three brother and sisters who were separated since they were young. Will they find each other? Read the whole series and find out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars five stars and then some.......2001-06-09

No Other Love is an absolutely wonderful book. Nicola and "The Gentleman" ignite sparks from their first encounter and fan the flame throughout the rest of the book.

Nicola, who is a down-down-to-earth member of high society, is still in love with her former lover who has been dead for ten years. One can almost feel her pain and longing for him.

Jack, "The Gentleman" highwayman, is a character I think every woman would love to meet. He is vowing revenge against Exmoor for a past wrong. Jack is definitely a hero to fall in love with. A sort of Robin Hood to the villagers.

Even though the direction this book is going in seems pretty obvious, the fun part is getting to the destination (the last page!) This book had me smiling and practically on the edge of my seat. Of course characters from the other two books in the series are in this one and that adds to the fun. This was definitely my favorite of the three books. It was completely enjoyable. (It is comparable to the Mallory Novels by Johanna Lindsey.) You will love the characters just as much. I can't say enough about this book except that it is a MUST READ!!!

(I would also like to see more books written that involve these characters)

5 out of 5 stars Saved my life and my marriage........2006-12-30

I originally took this book as a study class and it was AMAZING. I was truly convicted that I wasn't being the wife that God called me to be and that was ALL I could do to save and restore my marriage. This book makes you say, "why didn't I already KNOW that??!!" So honest and forthcoming plain old TRUTH. Sometimes the truth hurts and is hard to swallow, but once we put our human pride aside we are able to move forward in faith...and that's when God can work miracles.

Pride will be put away and your marriage will thrive!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT book on building a solid marriage.......2006-09-02

Classic Kay Arthur! No-nonsense Biblical wisdom on how to build and maintain a marriage that is both satisfying and God honoring. Kay's insights have been very helpful to my wife and I, and we give this book to couples as an engagement / wedding gift. This book is also a great tool for those who may already have some regrets in their marriage, and need help in overcoming obstacles that are preventing their marriage from being all that it can be. Personal reflection and lots of Biblical wisdom make this a great read, with lasting value.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend.......2005-09-11

My wife and I did Kay's book prior to getting marriage and really liked it. While some might have issues on some of the points in the book, Kay backs everything up with biblical references and it lines up with the word of God. We gave this as a wedding gift. This is the second set that we have given out as a wedding or engagement gift.

1 out of 5 stars UGH! Walked out of the Class.......2003-10-13

I took several of Kay Arthur's classes on various books from the Bible but advise you...don't waste your time with this course. After several sessions, I walked out of class due to the lies given on the subject. After speaking with several other Christian counselors, it is obvious Kay is still in need of healing, as portrayed by the contents of this course. There are still some issues that need to be resolved. I guess if you were brought up in a Christian home and overly protective, you would fall for the context. However, if you have any street smarts or experienced the secular world, before coming to Christ, you would be offended.

I do recommend her classes and books on specific books of the Bible and Spiritual gifts.

Book Description

Adoption now affects more American families than ever before-1.5 million adopted children live in the United States today, and 60 percent of Americans report some kind of personal connection to adoption. Happily, this surge has coincided with an increasing mainstream acceptance of adoption as just another way to form a family, complete with its own frustrations and joys that deserve to be discussed and celebrated.

A Love Like No Other does just that. It features twenty leading writers, all of whom are adoptive parents, discussing their personal experiences. They include adoptive parents of children of other races, like Emily Prager, who grapples with how to best keep her daughter connected to her Chinese roots; parents whose families blend biological children and adopted children, like bestselling author Jacquelyn Mitchard; single mothers of only children, like journalist Sheila Stainback; and same-sex adoptive parents like Jesse Green, who wonders how his sons will feel when instructed to make a Mother's Day card. They live in big cities and small towns, and have adopted domestically and overseas. Some of their stories soberingly address the potential complications of adoptive parenting, while others tell of happily enriched family lives.

Impressive for both its breadth and its quality, A Love Like No Other is a timely and heartwarming mosaic of the contemporary lives of adoptive parents and their children. In elegant prose and with refreshing honesty, these essays will introduce you to a group of families you won't soon forget.

5 out of 5 stars if adoption touches your life in any way, buy this book.......2007-03-02

At last, an intelligent, well-written book that candidly and unsentimentally explores the challenges of raising an adopted child. The different authors in this collection have kids who range in age from toddlers to teens, and the subjects they explore are fascinating, honest and heartfelt. If you are an adoptive parent, an adult adoptee or a relative/friend touched by a loved one's adoption, you will find something thought-provoking in this anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - insightful, balanced, and powerful.......2006-05-19

This book consists of a series of essays by adoptive parents, each of which expresses some distilled, highly personal, and pretty intense kernels of truth about their own individual adoptive parenting experiences. The authors are all professional writers, and this really comes across in the power of their words. The essays reflect both joyful and painful experiences and as a result richly characterizes the complexities of being an adoptive parent. I was completely hooked--couldn't put it down.

4 out of 5 stars Professional authors write of their personal experiences..........2006-03-25

This was a very moving collection of adoptive stories from professional writers. I emphasize the "professional" part only because the result is a much better book (editing, flow, content) then other compilations I've read written by non-writers. (Those, unfortunately, caused me to sometimes focus on lack of editing, poor grammer, etc rather than the content).

The experiences written about include domestic (open & closed), foster care, and international adoption. I enjoyed the variety of stories included in this compilation. I also appreciated the inclusion of stories addressing various stages and experiences that are common to most adoptive parents, regardless of the origin of your child.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling adoption stories.......2006-03-24

This collection of essays covers all aspects of adopting. The stories are very moving, honest and compelling. It covers both international and domestic adoption. It addresses some of the most difficult challenges that adoptive families must face. It is the best adoption book that I have read in YEARS!!

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2006-03-24

Of the (too) many adoption related books I've read over the past years, this was one book that I could not put down until I had finished it. What I loved about it was its inclusiveness, and its "real-ness." Every type of family situation is covered here (singles, married, divorced after adoption, domestic adoption, international adoption, transracial adoption, same-race adoption, special needs adoption, supportive extended families, non-supportive ones, post-adoption depression, birth family searches). And the parents of these children tell their stories, warts and all. Their joys, their sorrows, their bafflement over behaviors they haven't anticipated and cannot understand, and their acceptance of their children, as they are and for who they are. Several of the essays resonated personally with me. I could have written them from my own experience. I highly recommend this book, particularly for pre-adoptive parents seeking to learn all they can about the post-adoptive experience, from every angle.

Book Description

Catullus (Gaius Valerius, 84-54 BCE), of Verona, went early to Rome, where he associated not only with other literary men from Cisalpine Gaul but also with Cicero and Hortensius. His surviving poems consist of nearly sixty short lyrics, eight longer poems in various metres, and almost fifty epigrams. All exemplify a strict technique of studied composition inherited from early Greek lyric and the poets of Alexandria. In his work we can trace his unhappy love for a woman he calls Lesbia; the death of his brother; his visits to Bithynia; and his emotional friendships and enmities at Rome. For consummate poetic artistry coupled with intensity of feeling Catullus's poems have no rival in Latin literature.

Tibullus (Albius, ca. 54-19 BCE), of equestrian rank and a friend of Horace, enjoyed the patronage of Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus, whom he several times apostrophizes. Three books of elegies have come down to us under his name, of which only the first two are authentic. Book 1 mostly proclaims his love for 'Delia', Book 2 his passion for 'Nemesis'. The third book consists of a miscellany of poems from the archives of Messalla; it is very doubtful whether any come from the pen of Tibullus himself. But a special interest attaches to a group of them which concern a girl called Sulpicia: some of the poems are written by her lover Cerinthus, while others purport to be her own composition.

The Pervigilium Veneris, a poem of not quite a hundred lines celebrating a spring festival in honour of the goddess of love, is remarkable both for its beauty and as the first clear note of romanticism which transformed classical into medieval literature. The manuscripts give no clue to its author, but recent scholarship has made a strong case for attributing it to the early fourth-century poet Tiberianus.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Poetry of the Late Republic/Early Empire.......2005-08-09

Gaius Valerius Catullus was a contemporary of Julius Caesar and was known for his provocative poetry. In addition to Catullus, this great little edition by Loeb's has all of Tibullus (a later poet under the reign of Augustus) as well all in one edition.

Although Catullus wrote many erotic or amorous poems to men (he was bi-sexual) and his lover Lesbia, many of his poems are actually invectives attacking some of his contemporaries such as Julius Caesar. One of his greatest invective works is the one against Egnatius which goes as follows:

"Egnatius, because he has white teeth, is eternally smiling. If people come to the prisoner's bench, when the counsel for the defense is making everyone cry, he smiles: if they are mourning at the funeral of a dear son, when the distrought mother is weeping for her only boy, he smiles: whatever it is, wherever he is, whatever he is doing, he smiles: it is a malady he has, neither an elegant one as I think, nor in good taste. So I must give you a bit of advice, my good Egnatius. If you were a Roman or a Sabine or Tiburtine or a plump Umbrian or a fat Etruscan, or a black and tusky Lanuvian, or a Transpadane (to touch my own people too), or anybody else who washes his teeth with clean water, I still should not like you to be always smiling; for there is nothing sillier than a silly laugh. As it is, you are a Celtiberian; now in the Celtiberian country everyone regularly brushes his teeth and ruddy gums in the morning with his piss; so that, the more highly polished your teeth are, the more urine they will prove to have passed your lips."

If this type of poetry appeals to you, then you will probably like most of Catullus' works as well as other ancient Roman poetry.

The Loeb library is unique in that its classical texts are printed in both the original Latin text and English side-by-side. The translations are quite good and were done by competent scholars of classics whose choice of language is accurate, clear, and modern. These hard bound volumes are small but their covers are durable: the paper is of good quality. Good companions to this text would be Loeb's editions of Ovid's works and those of Martial who lived later in the Empire.

4 out of 5 stars Catullus and Tibullus: Exemplars of Roman Love Poetry.......2005-01-15

Catullus and Tibullus relatively belong to the same epoch in the history of Latin Poetry; and they also derive their inspiration through the same source--from Erato the Muse of Love Poetry. What one will encounter, then, while reading their works, is what may be perhaps the finest manifestation of Roman Love Poetry that has been passed over to us through the ages. With the exception of Propertius or Ovid, Catullus and Tibullus have no rival when it comes to the art of love poetry; and one may argue that the former poets only surpass the later in their bulk of extant poems and in their depth of subject-matter. Also included in this volume, is the Vigil of Venus, a warm and colorful poem attributed to a certain Tiberianus, who belongs to much later time, likely during the reign of the Antonines. As the introduction points out, the Vigil of Venus contains the first piece of Romanticism to be found in Western Poetry. It is a poem of exceptional merit, and it is not unworthy of the majesty of Catullus and Tibullus. Taken as a whole, students of Latin Literature, and poets of our day, have much to learn and enjoy by reading these noble classics.

"Let him tomorrow who has never loved,
and let him who has tomorrow love!"
This review relates to the volume -Catullus,
Tibullus, Pervigilium Veneris-, Second Edition,
Loeb Classical Library # 6, ISBN: 0674990072.
The original translations of Catullus (by F.W.
Cornish), of Tibullus (by J. P. Postgate), and
of the -Pervigilium Veneris- (by J. M Mackail)
have now been updated for the better by G. P.
Goold (his first 2nd edition appeared in 1988 --
this reprint is dated 2000), and Goold's
Introductory explanations for the state of the
translations and the need for updates appear
before each section of works (entire volume,
Reviser's Note, Aug. 1987; Catullus, Reviser's
Preface 1987; Tibullus, Reviser's Preface, 1988;
-Pervigilium Veneris-, Reviser's Preface, 1984).
Catullus, perhaps the best known of the 3 sources
of work in this volume, is an extremely interesting,
if not fascinating person and/or character. He can
be rough and bawdy and cynical, and at other times
stricken, driven, haunted, and sympathetic. His
poems are satiric attacks using "gutter language"
and sexual accusations, name-calling (especially
relating to ... proclivities) --
but they are also songs of pain, frustration, despair,
self-criticism, and complaint. There are also
exceptionally moving poems that recite the feelings
of the family and of himself over the loss of his
brother. Many editions of Catullus use euphemistic
language to get around his direct rough talk, or
they simply excise the "offending" passages. Thankfully,
this new edition restores the complete text with
appropriate graphic translations which give one the
sense of just what kind of an artist and person
Catullus was. G.P. Goold says that he has used
W.H.D. Rouse's paraphrases of several of Catullus'
poems because the paraphrases are so good. Those
poems paraphrased by Rouse are: 15, 21, 37, 69, 71,
74, 78, 79, 80, 89, 94, 97, 100, 110, 112, and 113.

Here for those who can take it are the opening
lines of 37 (paraphrased by Rouse): ...BR>Tibullus, on the other hand, is a bit quieter -- his
opening lines talk of pastoral peace (until he a little
later starts talking to Delia and shows how driven he
is, how under her spell -- and Love, oh Love -- that
mesmerizer, that seducer, that desired ideal). "I am
a captive fast bound in the bonds of a lovely girl;
I sit a janitor before her stubborn doors. I care not
for glory, Delia dear; let me only be with thee, and
I will pray folk call me sluggard and idler." "But
me, for I have been ever pliable to gentle Love, shall
Venus' self escort to the Elysian fields."
-Pervigilium Veneris- "a poem of not quite a hundred
lines celebrating a spring festival in honour of the
goddess of love, is remarkable both for its beauty
and as the first clear note of romanticism which
transformed classical into medieval literature."
The poem is divided into 3 sections with sub parts:
Spring -- stanza I, The arrival of spring; stanza
II, The birth of Venus; stanza III, The budding of the
rose. The Festival -- stanza IV, Venus' message to
the nymphs; stanza V, The nymphs' message to Diana;
stanza VI, The festival at Hybla. Litanies to Venus --
stanza VII, As cosmic goddess of procreation; stanza
VIII, As tutelary goddess of Rome; stanza IX, As goddess
of vegetation; stanza X, As goddess of animals and birds;
and a personal epilogue at the end of the poem: "She sings,
I am mute. When will my spring come? When shall I become
like the swallow that I may cease to be voiceless? I
have lost my muse through being voiceless, and Phoebus
[Apollo] regards me not...."

4 out of 5 stars Major new edition of Catullus should become standard.......1999-02-01

Thomson's edition of Catullus finally weds a commentary to his twenty-odd year old critical text. For the scholar of neoteric poetry, Thomson's book is a must; undergraduates will find it too vast and too unconcerned with elementary matters (also with literary matters) but very helpful for bibliography on each poem (a role Quinn's text was growing a bit long in the tooth for). Graduate students are compelled to use this as their standard text. Thomson is at his best when unraveling the often diffuse manuscript tradition of this often-read, little-understood poet. For classicists with only a passing interest in Catullus and his work, Fordyce (supplemented by Quinn for the "obscene" poems) remains more than usable.

Book Description

A Grief Like No Other is the book no one wants to ever have to buy; sadly, many people continue to need it. From 9/11 to Cindy Sheehan's son – from mass tragedies like the recent London bombings to Law and Order type crimes that make the news only to be replaced by another name. As such, more people are left with the aftermath of dealing with the violent death of a loved one. It brings its own special brand of grieving since victim’s families can spend years dealing with legal ramifications, guilt, and a myriad of other circumstances that don’t accompany “normal” deaths.

Kathleen O’Hara knows both sides of this coin. As a therapist, she has counseled hundreds of people dealing with grief. As a mother, she saw her worst fears realized when her college-aged son was brutally murdered in 1999. In the aftermath of Aaron’s murder, O’Hara developed the seven stage journey that is at the heart of A Grief Like No Other. Although this is a book for those left behind in the aftermath of violence, it offers concrete and practical steps and stages, allowing family and friends safe passage through this incredibly harrowing journey.

5 out of 5 stars My own experience with grief.......2006-05-31

I would recommend this book not only for those who are experiencing the horrific pain associated with grief, but also for those who love them. Many of my friends and family members have bought Kathleen O'Hara's book and have gained a better understanding of what I and my family are going through.
It was just over one year ago that our son was killed in action. Mother's Day, 2005. I have struggled to find the words to write, the things to say, a way to begin working through this terrible pain. After reading and re-reading A Grief Like No Other, I have been given such a gift. The book gives the reader tools to begin writing. Suggestions on how to deal with the overwhelming grief, examples of others who have lost someone to violence and how they feel. It gave me courage and hope.
The author writes about her own experience of losing her son to violence. She is an amazing woman. Her book is well worth reading and sharing with others.

    Book Description

Plutarch (Plutarchus), ca. 45-120 CE, was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia in central Greece, studied philosophy at Athens, and, after coming to Rome as a teacher in philosophy, was given consular rank by the emperor Trajan and a procuratorship in Greece by Hadrian. He was married and the father of one daughter and four sons. He appears as a man of kindly character and independent thought, studious and learned.

Plutarch wrote on many subjects. Most popular have always been the 46 Parallel Lives, biographies planned to be ethical examples in pairs (in each pair, one Greek figure and one similar Roman), though the last four lives are single. All are invaluable sources of our knowledge of the lives and characters of Greek and Roman statesmen, soldiers and orators. Plutarch's many other varied extant works, about 60 in number, are known as Moralia or Moral Essays. They are of high literary value, besides being of great use to people interested in philosophy, ethics and religion.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of the Moralia is in fifteen volumes, volume XIII having two parts.
