Needs more specifics.......2007-07-13
I liked the idea pictures in this book, but ultimately the "how-to's" left me wanting for more. I didn't feel it went into enough detail of things such as, how to make the rocks look natural and how to place them on the rubber liner so they don't wash away immediately. A good idea book, though.
Major waterfalls.......2007-06-26
This was a good book if you are going big time waterfalls. I was looking for something a little bit simpler.
GREAT PURCHASE AND VERY HELPFUL.......2007-01-10
THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED IF YOU ARE GOING TO CONSTRUCT A WATERFALL ETC. PACKED FULL OF USEFUL INFORMATION. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Most complete and detailed book for creating Ponds and Streams.......2006-06-12
Good book. Pictures are good and the descriptions and details from the creation of Ponds, Streams and Waterfalls is the most complete of all the books that I have purchased or read. It could do a little better job of describing how to integrate a Bog Garden with a Pond. I still have questions about that.
Overall the best of the breed.

Great Ideas.......2006-11-03
The book was great for visualizing what we wanted and to convey that to our landscape architect. It also provided good information regarding care of a pondless waterfall.
Fairly detailed.......2006-03-07
This book isnt overly long and filled with over the top water gardening items most people cant afford. The applications discussed a common and to the point. The
contenet isnt bad for a beginning pond builder but you can gather most information from the book from websites online like pondmegastore or lilypons.
Beginners & Novices go ahead.
Ortho's Building Ponds.......2005-09-07
Gives how to, how much, where and why. Probably the best pond construction book I bought.
Great Teaching Tool.......2005-05-21
Great book to learn about building water gardens. Excellent resource and I would highly recommend it.
GREAT STARTER.......2005-03-16
This book is excellent for the price and with a handyman mentallity you might be able to figure our the blind spots yourself and commence your pond.
Book Description
Since its original publication in 1994, North Carolina Waterfalls has been the most comprehensive guide available to one of the prime natural features of the Tar Heel State. This new edition includes over 600 waterfalls, with detailed directions and trail and beauty ratings for the major waterfalls on public land. For the first time, waterfalls located on private land will be listed, although directions won't be provided.
Visitors to western North Carolina are often surprised at the spectacular variety of waterfalls tucked among the Appalachians all the way from Murphy in the southwest to Stone Mountain in the northeast, and surprisingly, even in eastern locations such as Fayetteville and Rocky Mount. This guide features over 100 color and black-and-white photographs showing those waterfalls at their absolute best. Its special section about photographing waterfalls in general, as well as specific hints for photographing each individual waterfall, will help readers create memorable images of their own.

wilmaNC.......2007-07-27
Excellent book for locating waterfalls. Very good directions. Is a good book for those just wanting to look for waterfalls, but not much for a regular hiker as most of the trails are either very short, or there is a need to bushwack.
NC Waterfalls.......2007-05-12
A good reference, but I found the directions confusing at times. You need to drive slowly and read carefully.
WOW!.......2007-02-11
I am an amatuer nature photographer so I am always on the look-out for books to know where to go to shoot. This book may be the best photography guide I have ever had. He tells you where the waterfalls are, and how to photograph them. Best of all he has the guts to rate the quality of each waterfall on a scale of 1 to 10. There are so many waterfalls that I can't visit them all. With this book I can go only to the highly rated ones and know they will be knock-outs. When I get there he will help me to know how to shoot it. This is a great book!
NORTH CAROLINA WATERFALLS: BY KEVIN ADAMS.......2007-01-13
EXCELLENT BOOK!!!! VERY EASY TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS TO MAJOR WATERFALL HIKING AREAS IN NORTH CAROLINA.
Best WNC Hiking and Waterfall book out there.......2006-07-20
Buy this and forget all other waterfall and hiking books for WNC.
This is the only book you'll need to find the best waterfalls in Western NC. Adams rates each of the waterfalls for beauty, ease to photograph and trail accessiblity. I carry it in my car. Adams has never lead me astray with directions or lead me to a waterfall I didn't think was worth seeing.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-04-01
The book has great pictures but no real detail about how to build ponds or waterfalls. How disappointed we were when we received the book. We will look for other books but will not purchase them online. We need to be able to see what is inside the cover.
There are better choices.......2006-04-19
In my opinion, this book is a very superficial overview of pond construction. A far better choice is "Ortho's All About Building Waterfalls, Ponds, and Streams", for the same price [or slightly cheaper]. "Ortho's" covers the topic much more thoroughly than this "complete guide".
Good fundamentals........2005-07-07
Excellent fundamental instructions for ponds and waterfalls. If you are doing a stream also, you might want to consult another title or two on the same subject. You will also need some more education on plants for your pond. But for basic pond and waterfall, this is the best I have read.
Only pictures.......2003-05-27
If you are a beginer in pond building and you need everything explained to details, do not buy this book. I bought it and it's just not good. You can read it under a hour and you'll see only pictures with nothing on them.
Excellent Book!.......2000-10-02
How to Build Ponds and Waterfalls : The Complete Guide by Jeffrey Reid is an excellent how-to book for wildlife garders.

Interesting.......2007-08-29
I read this book mostly because I hoped for a rapid weight-loss miracle. I found the recommendations far too stringent for my working mom lifestyle and I wasn't ready to make such an extreme commitment, but there were interesting suggestions regarding food allergies in this book and using them helped me realize that dairy products seem to be an allergy for me. It's interesting reading with a degree, I've found, of validity - but I'm just not sure about the extreme stuff.
waterfall Diet.......2006-09-11
This is the start of my 3rd day on this diet. I lost a pound when I got up Sat. and another today, Sun. I have never lost two pounds in two days on any diet.
I can see the lumpy look(water retention?) on the inside of my arms noticeably just about gone.
I made notes as I read the book and went to the natural foods store where they helped me find all of the supplements mentioned. I also purchased all of the foods mentioned, which are also my favorites.
I spent the day experimenting in my kitchen and made a nice project out of finding things that worked for us. I made a pot of brown rice, steamed a head of cabbage with cumin, dill, pepper and Mrs. Dash. I also diced up purple onion and red bell peppers to add to the cabbage. I had bought a jar of Thai curry paste and coconut milk which I mixed together in a very small amount and poured it on top of the cabbage which I had spooned on top of the rice. I thought I was in a Thai restaurant, and not on a diet.
I had bought frozen Shrimp Scampi at Costco, heated up about 10 pieces and put them on top, too. It was so quick and easy. All of this is not exactly low fat, but I lost weight anyway. My husband only weighs once a week, so no results on him yet.
Besides the fennel and peppermint tea I also bought something called obesity tea and mixed them all together, making a very large pot and drinking them as my 60 oz of water during the day.
Besides this, I got Costco's vanilla soy milk, added their pure juice(Capri sun) some blueberries and made smoothies, to which I added orange flavored fiber power which improved the taste even more. It was so good that my husband was looking forward to the next one. We drank those in between meals.
I also got 3 packs of Tilapia(fish) from Costco, separated them into small freezer bags of one meal for 2, and now they're frozen but ready to use. We fried them with Mrs. Dash, garlic, and cornmeal using olive oil. Delicious!
I should also add that I was working at my computer most of the day, but do get some exercise in the evening using 2-lb. weights in arm exercises while jogging on our mini trampoline ( 39.00 at Sports Chalet) while watching the evening news. My husband and I take turns, like every 5 minutes.
I have not gotten around to making the celery and parsley juice yet, will do that today, and no, I don't work for Costco! I have noticed that every time I go there they have more and more organic food. Oh, I also got their organic pumpkin-flax grainola which I sprinkled on my yougurt (haven't found goat-type yet) along with their mixed dried fruit and nuts medley. Great stuff.
Excellent book Really Works!!.......2005-03-31
I just recieved this book and have been on the diet for 2 days now and have lost over 6lbs already. I have not seen my legs this small in a long time. I will admit I was a little concerned about getting enough protien and some of the dangers of soy. But after some research on this book and the diet itself, I am no longer concerned. A good rule of thumb to stick by is everything is good in moderation. You get plenty of protien through chicken, fish, and tofu. This book is excellent on pinpointing the culprit for your symptoms. I've had some of these symptoms from a teenager and never knew why. After being on it for only a few days I have never felt better. I would recommend this book.
Bad information. Waste of Money........2005-01-15
After waitng 3 months to get a copy of this book, I was extremely disapointed.
On her "diet" you stop eating fat, wheat, sugar, dairy, red meat, honey, eggs, coffee and replace them with fish, soy, grains, beans and vegetables. You also take a vitamin supplement. BIG Deal, this is just an outdated low fat diet.
The author advises the use of Soy, a dangerous toxin and known allergin as a primary source of protein. Type in "Dangers of Soy" in your search engine and see what you get.
She also advocates the use of grains and legumes for their proteins as well. The problem is, the body uses these secondary sources as starch, not proteins. The use of these substances also causes blood sugar disturbances, allergies, indigestion, obesity etc.
This book is a poor re write of "The False Fat Diet" by Elson Hass, combined with Barry Sears 40, 30, 30 diet and a 90s style low fat diet.
A much better book on health and fat loss is Neanderthin by Ray Audette. He fully explains the correct way for humans to eat for fitness, leaness and health.
Have Fun,
Art
I would advise every woman to read this book!.......2003-11-06
I loved this book from beginning to end. It explains how sometimes being overwight doesn't necessarily mean having too much fat, but fluid retention could be one of the causes. If you are one of those people that is always on a diet and performing lots of execercise and still find it hard to shed those extra pounds, you will find this book extremely helpful. Some bits are quite scientific but still easy to read and well explained. The book initially helps you to find out if fluid retention could be your problem, what are the reasons that causes it and how to fix the problem. The book offers a diet program, easy to follow with easy and delicious recepies. I tried the program and followed the advices and it works! To help speed up the proccess of fluid elimination try some diuretic herbal teas as well.
Book Description
Like a spontaneous cascade of wisdom nectar, the open and natural words of Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, uncomplicated by scholarly elaboration, flow here in the tradition of the direct transmissions of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past. Through commentary on the Preliminary Practices (Ngöndrö) prayer from the treasure text of the great master Tragtung Düdjom Lingpa, insights into many central practices emerge in order to deepen understanding of the foundations of Vajrayana Buddhism. Also included in the book is a commentary on the Tsok Khang Dechen (Assembly Palace of Great Exaltation), the root text prayer of the second Kyabje Düdjom Rinpoche, Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje.

Exceptional.......2007-09-16
Thank you so much. This is such a profound book and it arrived in perfect condition.
True to It's Name.......2007-01-26
I believe this book is intended for those who have embarked on the life-changing, and potentially ego-shattering path of Ngondro, -specifically the short Dudjom Tersar Ngondro of which this is a commentary. For those who are fortunate enough to have encountered a genuine guide, and are engaged in this practice, this book is a great resource which can be read endlessly.
As with any Dharma practice, reading it requires the utmost attention and perseverance, but the rewards are inconceivable. I do hold a considerably contrary opinion to the previous reviewer, "A Friend and Neighbor", in this regard: do not be mislead by someone reading without experience and sincerity. I believe that it is intended to be challenging, and a practice in and of itself to overcome habitual mental laziness to access it's true import, from paragraph to paragraph. In my experience each sentence can be held indefinitely, and absorbed indefintely, providing many levels of meaning.
I have found in the course of reading many Dharma books in the english language that often things are either A. Watered down by being over-simplified, over-explained, and can tend towards being outright boring in this regard. . or B. They are strictly composed in the specialized language of Western Academia for an academic milieu, with a standardized terminology and style that would be almost as daunting to become fluent in as Tibetan itself. I have found that as with all of Thinley Norbu Rinpoche's books, this is a rare exception to both of these tendencies. He adeptly and creatively finds new ways to translate both words and concepts, instead of adhering to standardized forms of translation that in their crystallization have closed down meanings that are actually multilayered and meant to breathe with life. Rinpoche manages to resuscitate them, while using traditional metaphors and creating new ones for clarification. At the same time, he rigorously adheres to the traditional form of commentary, unfolding the meaning of each line of the Ngondro practice completely to it's final import, and thus illustrates that (as we often hear but fail to believe) --everything is contained within the Ngondro. Also true to the form, he cites from a large number of Sutras and traditional sources, -providing the benefit of fragments of translation of otherwise untranslated works, -or insightful re-translations of pieces that provoke new insights. Not to mislead you I will humbly admit that I have possessed this book for months, but haven't completed reading it. I am about half-way through, and I am taking my sweet time. I imagine I will be reading and re-reading it for a good while: It is a book that becomes a process, as you make progress in your own practice, new insights ensue and this text can help illuminate them. I keep it on my shrine, next to HH Dudjom Rinpoche's big red book and Dudjom Lingpa's "Buddhahood Without Meditation", which seems an appropriate place.
From a great Master of Buddhist Nyingma Ngondro Teachings.......2006-12-10
The messages that the Author, as a renowned teacher of Buddhism, wants to give are clearly conveyed to those who are serious readers, or more importantly, believers and students. There are many ways of expressing oneself and issues in the English language, and writing forms differ from different regions of the world where English is used, and in the different fields of its utilization. Serious and closer look at linguistic formulations of sometimes complex interpretations of language from Choskye (religious language) is sometimes required to extract or appreciate meanings, and sometimes even adequate background knowledge may be called for. For example, when one reads Shakespeare, understanding and appreciation stems from repeatedly looking at and giving thought to what the exact meaning is intended to be conveyed. I hope readers will adopt this attitude to reading this important book from a great Buddhist master which can be of great benefit to Buddhist practitioners.
From a genuine master, another masterpiece........2006-11-17
It is delightful to encounter the writing of a non-native speaker of English whose command of the subtle nuances of the language exceeds that of even highly learned people for whom it is their mother tongue.
English translations of Tibetan Buddhist teachings sometimes employ multi syllabic philosophical terms when common use, simpler words are not apparently available, yet Thinley Norbu is able to express the precise meanings of complex Buddhist ideas with simple diction and idiom, making this text not only erudite and profound, but also remarkably mellifluous.
Highly recommended to any student of Dharma!

Customer Reviews:
Great author.......2007-04-01
Want a book that holds your interest? I recommend this entire series. I discovered Gunn on accident; really it was a blessing! I liked this entire series. Good wholesome values and interesting plots that intertwine with the other books.
Robin Gunn is a good writer of unrealistic stories........2006-01-29
While the author seems to be an able writer, the story line lacks real depth. Some fresh ideas and more realistic plot might help. Meri acts quite ridiculous and unbelievable at times, (the green ogre, the blow up man, the gold fish, constantly going over the same old mind conversations) Perhaps this book would appeal more to adolescents than adults. Try again, Robin!
An Awesome Book!.......2003-04-22
This book is my favorite out of all the books in The Glenbrooke Series. Don't get me wrong. They're all good, this one just happens to be my favorite. It's about Meredith, Shelly's younger sister. I loved this book! It was really good! If you've read other books in The Glenbroke Series or the Christy Miller Series you'll love this one! I would recommend this book! It's sooo good!
person.......2003-03-24
I loved this book! I have to say that I really like Robin Jones Gunn's books. I started by reading the Christy Miller books and then found out about the Christy and Todd books. After I finished those I later started the Glenbrooke series. I really like this series and like all of the books I've read so far. This one though is one of my favorites!
Waterfalls.......2003-03-12
Like all of the other reviewers, I'd have to say this book was great. It was funny, had great romance. So you're probably wondering why I only gave it 3 stars. I didn't agree with all of the beliefs that Jake Wilde had (one of the main characters). Maybe the author was trying to point out in the book that his opion was wrong. I firmly do not believe that love is a chemical reaction. Love is a feeling, a gift from God.
The first few chapters were great. Then it began to drag a bit. The middle was the longest. I liked how she ended it. It was a great book.
Product Description
This book traces more than a century of legal, political, and social battles waged by Columbia River Indians as they fought for the survival of wild salmon and their inherent right to harvest them. Many of the stories focus on Celilo Falls, a place of captivating natural beauty and spirituality that also served as a trade center for tribes throughout the Northwest. Celilo Falls disappeared under the backwaters of The Dalles dam in March of 1957.
The stories are told through the eyes and words of the people, especially the Indian people, who lived through them -- from the 1855 Walla Walla Treaty Council proceedings through the fraudulent purchase of the Warm Springs Tribe's fishing rights (via the so-called Huntington Treaty) to the negotiations and payments made for the flooding of Celilo Falls. Each chapter features the creative (and often highly effective) legal means invoked by the Indians to protect their fisheries and their way of life. Several documents of historical value are reproduced in the appendix.
The Foreword is written by Vine Deloria, Jr.

A Free-flowing Masterpiece .......2006-07-17
This book emphasizes what everybody shoud have done for a long time : listening to the Indians of the Pacific Northwest to protect the rivers and salmon. Serious and sometimes irreparable damages have been made on these rivers and salmon because of a continuing destruction or bad management by greedy or selfish nonIndians. It is time now to respect the Si'lailo Way and to restore the rivers following this way.

New definitions for water falls.......2007-09-06
Some of the water falls described in the book were not even a tiny stream...the poetic descriptions are nice poetry but poor trail description. the book helped us very little.
things do change.......2005-07-21
I am an avid waterfall hunter. I found this guide to be extremely helpful, and ulike most others, the directions were pretty good. I've been trying to reach Russell Dunn, so I hope that maybe he logs in here to see what people think. There was a waterfall written about on page 116 of this book, called Hull's Falls. This is very important because it doesn't exist anymore. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about. My family and I visited the falls recently, and I'm sure we had the right place. The bridge was there, the boulders were there, but the rocks had fallen into disarray and the waterfall therefore no longer exists. I think that it may have something to do with the earthquake that happened in Plattsburgh a few years ago. It may have loosened things so that when it flooded it created an incident. The bridge has also been closed, because it's unsafe. If there is a reprint of the book, that may be something that should be updated. But the book as a whole is an excellent source of information for waterfall hunters in that area.
Book Description
Although Chris Shaffer and John Muir have lived most of their lives in different centuries they both render similar characteristics in their travels.
Shaffer, like Muir, is an explorer, and while many believe California is so populated that there is no land left to explore in the 21st Century,Shaffer has proven them wrong.
Over the last decade, Shaffer has visited and documented more than 1,200 lakes, rivers, streams and waterfalls throughout the Golden State. His findings were miraculous. All documented in "The Definitive Guide to the Waterfalls of Southern and Central California."
Shaffer reveals dozens of waterfalls you couldn't find on a map with a microscope. Many of the extravagant waterfalls Shaffer named himself.
"There's no doubt in my mind people have been to all these waterfalls before. However, I've searched everywhere for documentation on many of these waterfalls and it doesn't exist," says Shaffer, President of Shafdog Publications. Shaffer is releasing his third book in two years. "The
Definitive Guide to Fishing in Southern California and The Definitive Guide to Fishing in Central California," are well known California guidebooks Shaffer also wrote. "Rand McNally has their work cut out for them. People aren't going to be able to find these waterfalls without the book. Many of them aren't shown on maps."
Including the 110 waterfalls Shaffer named himself, the full color, glossy, 416-page guide details more than 265 waterfalls, 65 of which you can drive to and others you need a boat to reach. All are located in Southern and
Central California.
"I told all my secrets. I wanted to write a book that inspired people to explore. There is no reason to sit at home on a Saturday and watch TV when no matter where you live in California there's a waterfall less than one hour from your front door," Shaffer said. "This book has something for everyone. Some you can drive-to, others require a short walk and I've included some where you need to set out on a three day backpacking trip to reach."
"The Definitive Guide to the Waterfalls of Southern and Central California," aims at revolutionizing the realm of fishing, hiking, camping and searching for waterfalls in California by making the trips fun and exciting for all. Shaffer not only tells you how to reach the waterfalls by car and foot, he describes his journey in locating them and includes color photos and real life stories to make the trip enjoyable for all.
"It blows me away, people from all over the world pay thousands of dollars to fly to California to see our waterfalls and the people who live here have no idea they exist," says Shaffer. "It's ironic. People think there is no flowing water in Southern California. You just have to know where to go."
Illustrating both seasonal, intermittent and year-round waterfalls this book, stuffed with more than 500 color photographs includes more than 100 waterfalls where people can catch fish in the pool below the actual waterfall.
"You don't need to go to Alaska to catch a trout while being sprayed with mist in a pool below a waterfall. You can do it in your backyard," Shaffer added.
Broken up into 16 regions spanning from the Pacific Ocean east along Highway 108 over Sonora Pass to Nevada and the Bay Area down south to Mexico, this book makes even the most avid hikers and outdoor lovers salivate. For the novice hiker or hard core adventurer more than 775 miles of hiking trails to waterfalls are described.
"I've personally visited and rated all of them over the last 10 years," Shaffer said. "Some of them you can jump off, others have great swimming holes. With the threats of terrorism and the war going on people need a place to relax and enjoy life and stay free from stress. This book will do it."
This guide features the world renowned waterfalls of Yosemite National Park and the lesser known waterfalls of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, not to mention the pristine wilderness areas
Customer Reviews:
Great information - need maps.......2007-07-10
I used this book on a recent trip to central California and found it EXTREMELY useful in planning the trip and deciding which waterfalls to visit. The descriptions and ratings were "right on," and I really found it helpful. My only "negative" comment would be that I would have liked to have been able to see a map of each area discussed with numbered markers on map to show the relative locations of each site. But overall, would definitely HIGHLY recommend.
Chris knows his falls...........2006-05-06
Being a beginner hiker and waterfall hunter I really didn't know where to go or how to get anywhere. After finding that most website have awful directions to the site and then to the fall, I came upon Chris Shaffer's material. His descriptive directions have been incredibly helpful and he has given me many choices for adventures in the LA area. I highly recommend this book to anyone who actually wants to find the waterfalls.
Saw Chris Shaffer and the book featured on ABC World News.......2006-05-03
Bryan, you obviously have a lot to learn. I read about this book in several places. The LA Times did a huge feature on Shaffer's explorations and accomplishments in finding waterfalls in California and he was also featured on ABC World News. And, if you did a little research, Shaffer was asked in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune why he didnt include Fish Canyon Falls and he explained that the Forest Service asked him not to because at the time all access was closed to it. Also, the falls on Lytle Creek are in the book, but their official name is Bonita Falls. Please dont let your ignorance show and deter people from reading this book. The LA Times is one of the largest papers in the world and they wouldnt dedicate four pages in a single day to something not worthy. This book is a amazing tool for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
Definitive??? Ouch!!!.......2006-04-02
With great expectation I looked forward to getting Mr. Shaffer's book, especially after reading a great review of it in the now defunct section of the LA Times called Outdoors...once in my possession, I would be among the cognoscenti of southern California's natural wonders...but alas it is not to be...First, I looked for the 80' three tiered Fish Canyon falls just above Duarte in the San Gabriel's...nothing was to be found...this is one of the most famous and beautiful falls in all of the San Gabriel's...a simple call to any, and I mean ANY ranger the area could have named it...no, nothing...Next, I looked for the well known but unnamed falls just off the Middle fork of Lytle Creek, three actually that include drops between 60' and 80' respectively...again nothing, not one word...both of these spectacular and beautiful falls can be seen in all their grandeur on the NET and at numerous sites...Definitive, hardly...two stars and only because of its beautiful layout...
GREAT BOOK! Don't Listen to Negative Reviews!.......2005-09-02
This book truly is the definitive guide to waterfalls. I read some of the negative reviews and none of them make any sense. The waterfalls are just drips? Chris completely describes the quality of the waterfalls in the book and says what months to go visit them when they are at their highest quality. And the review that said he must have just copied the other book is rubbish. I know for a fact that he traveled to all of these waterfalls, took his own pictures, and wrote his own words about them. This book has everything you need to find the waterfalls in Southern and Central California!
