Book Description
This extensively revised and expanded third edition of the Artech House bestseller, Computational Electrodynamics: The Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, offers you the most up-to-date and definitive resource on this critical method for solving Maxwell's equations. There has been considerable advancement in FDTD computational technology over the past few years, and this new edition brings you the very latest details with four new invited chapters on advanced techniques for PSTD, unconditional stability, provably stable FDTD-FETD hybrids, and hardware acceleration. Moreover, you find many completely new sections throughout the book, including major updates on convolutional PML ABCs; dispersive, nonlinear, classical-gain, and quantum-gain materials; and micro-, nano-, and bio- photonics.
This single resource provides complete guidance on FDTD techniques and applications, from basic concepts, to the current state-of-the-art. It enables you to more efficiently and effectively design and analyze key electronics and photonics technologies, including wireless communications devices, high-speed digital and microwave circuits, and integrated optics. You find sample FDTD codes written in Matlab® that serve as a self-guided refresher, and examples of how to use the FDTD method on a wide range of projects in the field. What's more, to supplement the third edition, the authors and publisher have created a Website where you can find solutions to the problems, sample FDTD PML codes, text updates/errata, and downloadable color graphics and videos. Consequently, this new edition is the ideal textbook for both a senior-year undergraduate elective course and a graduate course in computational electrodynamics.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant textbook on computational EM.......2007-02-04
This is THE STANDARD reference on FDTD methods in computational electrodynamics. Moreover, even if time-domain is not your main thing but you still work with computational EM, add this to your library. It is wonderfully written, simultaneously easy to read and deeply comprehensive. You can get your own codes going by reading this book. After applying the things you learn here you will have a renewed inspiration in Maxwell's equations and E&M.
The book for FDTD.......2005-11-09
This book is an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable reference/tutorial. The book is suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate/first-year graduate class with a prerequisite of one semester of undergraduate E&M. (The authors' preface indicates that this prerequisite is not entirely necessary, but I don't see how you could understand what is going on without it.)
The book can also be used for self-study. In this vein, the book's website contains 1d-, 2d-, and 3d-matlab scripts that are excellent for learning how to actually implement all of this stuff. The third edition weighs in at just over 1000 pages with a price tag of $139, which is $10 cheaper than the 2nd edition was when it came out.
Allen Taflove is, perhaps, the leader in the development and use of this technique. Allen is now at Northwestern. Susan Hagness was a recent PhD student of his (1998) and is now an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Wisconsin. The authors are at the forefront in the development of applications.
The third edition is significantly larger than the 2nd edition and includes several applications chapters that were cowritten with the major researchers in the field. The extraordinary explosion of application areas for FDTD is captured in the later chapters, and these chapters give students and new researchers a clear flavor of the vitality and interest in the field which extends from the detection of breast cancer to ELF pulses produced by earthquakes. It is refreshing to find authors who so readily give credit to others in their field. Taflove and Hagness have been very gracious in this regard, and as a consequence have a much better book and a very detailed and useful bibliography.
I very heartily recommend this book to anyone who wishes to use FDTD techniques.
Agree with Prior Reviewer.......2002-09-21
I cannot quite honestly give this book (*first* edition, not second) a full five-point-zero stars because it somewhat comes apart the closer one gets to the final chapters. I read this book a few years ago, so I apologize for lack of specificity. However, I completely agree with the prior reviewer who stated that this book is better than Kunz's and Luebbers' book, which I appears to be a slightly edited compilation of previous publications --- even if that is completely untrue. In fact, in my opinion, Taflove's book (again, first edition) is a *much* better textbook than Kunz and Luebbers.
The Book News review is somewhat misleading. Taflove derives the difference equations in full, painstaking detail. (Perhaps the Book News reviewer fell asleep during that portion.) For me, this was the most valuable and educational portion of the book. Example applications have their place, but only after understanding the basic principles. Taflove did an excellent job in describing these principles, which go far beyond the basic Yee algorithm (e.g. extrapolation techniques and incorporation of BC's). Those readers familiar with other FD books should understand what I'm saying here: Anyone who reads this book and understands it will not only be conversant about FDTD but should also be able to write solid working codes. With the K&L book, this is very questionable.
A good overview of FD-TD method.......2000-05-25
A good intro book for the FD-TD method with many applications. The list of references at the end of each chapter is also very useful. Some of the material is now outdated and needs corrections, but otherwise a great reference for CEM. I would recommend this book over the Kunz & Luebbers FD-TD book.
Book Description
This book has become one of the main statistical tools for the analysis of economic and financial data. Designed for both theoreticians and practitioners, this book provides a comprehensive treatment of GMM estimation and inference. All the main statistical results are discussed intuitively
and proved formally, and all the inference techniques are illustrated using empirical examples in macroeconomics and finance. This book is the first to provide an intuitive introduction to the method combined with a unified treatment of GMM statistical theory and a survey of recent important
developments in the field.
Book Description
Dirck Halstead is one of America's preeminent photojournalists, whose iconic images have graced more covers of Time magazine than any other photographer's. From the battlefields of Vietnam to the halls of the White House to film sets around the world, Halstead's sense of timing and eye for the revealing shot was unerring throughout his 50-year career. Among the 300 photographs in this collection are many that are instantly recognizable, such as Bill Clinton embracing Monica Lewinsky, or Nixon saluting with his famous V-for-victory sign. Others have become more resonant with the passage of time. Throughout, Halstead provides fast-paced, lively, and engaging accounts of his experiences in the field. A one-of-a-kind autobiography in words and pictures, Moments in Time is a half-century of history seen through one photographer's lens.
Customer Reviews:
I remember.......2007-06-26
I finished the Halstead book last night and it was more than I thought it would be. It is more than photos out of the past. There are stories. I remember all of the events (does that mean I'm old) and seeing the photographs. Halstead is a dedicated professional. Thanks for the memories (good & not so good). KJH June 25, 2007
Look over his Halstead's shoulder through nearly a half century of world history.......2007-03-18
Over the course of a long airline flight, I picked up Halstead's book and found myself unable to put it down thorugh three cross-country legs (even through the obligatory bit about putting everything away and raising tray tables... but I digress). Far more than the tale of a photographer's look through the lens over the course of several decades, this book provides insights, commentary and background to some of the most photographed events in the last half century... as well as the pictures themselves.
Exceptionally well written for a guy who is known for his reporting via a lens, Halstead's work is at times, funny, always intriguing and a thoroughly engrossing read.
Moments in Time.......2007-01-07
Not long after I started reading the book I found it to be a lot more than a lifetime Photographer's experiences. It is a thinking and caring Photojournalist's eye witness insight to Historical events of the latter half of the 20th century.Dirck gives a romantic vieu of Saigon City with the range of honest emotions that war times generate. He also presents unique insights to the performances of past presidents that served while he was a White House photographer. Dirck does this with an eye for significant events through both word and pictures. The historical and artistic content of the pictures is a bonus.A rewarding read.
New Insights to the World from One of the Most Respected Photographers.......2007-01-01
From Douglas Kirkland
This book is an incredible and riveting look at the some of the most important events from the last fifty years.
Not only is Dirck Halstead a great photojournalist but he is also a superb raconteur. There is a wonderful mix of war, politics, Hollywood and humanity which make this book difficult to put down once you've started reading it.
We recognize many of the iconic images but the words give an important dimension which adds still more to their meaning. Congratulations Dirck Halstead and thank you for bringing us this significant treasure.
Halstead's Moments inTIme review.......2006-12-20
THIS BOOK EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS. IT WAS PORTRAYED AS TRUE LIFE-LIKE. I DID NOT WANT TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN. I TRULY FEEL LIKE I HAVE EXPERIENCED THESE HISTORY MAKING EVENTS ALONG SIDE MR. HALSTEAD. HE CERTAINLY PUT A LOT IN THIS BOOK. I THANK HIM FOR SHARING THE HIS OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE WORLD. AS MORE AND MORE AVID READERS DISCOVER AND READ THIS BOOK, A THIRST FOR THIS KNOWLEDGE SHOULD BE QUENCHED.

Book Description
With over 160 full-color photographs, Colorado: Moments in Time is one of the most comprehensive photography books ever published on Colorado. This expansive volume includes photographs of the state's most popular attractions, such as the Maroon Bells, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Great Sand Dunes. It also contains images of places that have never before appeared in a photography book, including several photographs taken on vast, unspoiled stretches of private property.
In producing this book, author and photographer Grant Collier has tirelessly striven to capture the beauty and essence of the Colorado landscape. He has traversed every corner of the state, from the grasslands and prairies of the eastern plains to the canyons and mesas of the Western Slope. In the process, he has woven a portrait of Colorado unlike any that has been seen before.
Colorado: Moments in Time is divided into eight sections of the state. Each section contains an essay on various events that have shaped the history of Colorado.

Wow.......2006-02-04
Frankly, I'm impressed. One of the best new nature photographer's out there, obviously familiar with Weston and Adams, but forging into new territory as well. Bravo! Great website too.
Testamonial to Colorado, Moments in Time.......2005-05-13
After purchasing a recent copy of Colorado, Moments in Time, I feel compelled to give credit where credit is surely due. I was taken back by photograher Grant Collier's 'eye'. Grant takes photographs like I wish I could. Every photo is exquisite in it's own way. I am not a writer, so I do not feel that I can do justice to Grant Collier's work in text. I will not compare this work to other famous Colorado photographers because it would not be fair to them. In my oppinion, Grant Collier is simply the best. I have purchased other works of Grant Collier and am equally impressed with them. I strongly feel that Grant Collier is a name to watch as a rising star. Buy the books. Catch him while you can.
Superbly showcases the photography skills of Grant Collier .......2004-08-12
Colorado: Moments In Time superbly showcases the photography skills of Grant Collier in the form of more than 160 full-color images of Colorado's visually impressive wilderness areas. A very small amount of descriptive text embellishes these captivating snapshots of the Colorado wilderness' unfettered splendor, from a close-up of the state flower in full blossom to the rugged falls along the Elk River. Colorado: Moments In Time is a treasure for anyone who appreciates and cherishes natural beauty, and highly recommended.
Book Description
The story of Cassie Bernall, who died when she told a gunman, "Yes, I believe" in the Columbine High School shooting, has inspired young Christians around the world.
This Is Your Time is an inspirational call to young people and is the title song from Michael W. Smith's new CD. This book includes the story of how Michael came to write the song and of his relationship with others who have stood for Christ in the face of death. From memories of Keith Green and Rich Mullins to stories of people who have mentored Michael and made a difference with their lives, this beautiful book will challenge young men and women to live every day to its fullest.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2004-05-11
This book is basically about Michael W. Smith's song, This is Your Time, and what it means. The song was written for Cassie Bernall, the Columbine High School student who was supposedly asked if she believed in God, and answered yes, before she died. The book is really good, I recommend it. the only thing, it gets a bit preachy at times, which I hate (and yes, before anyone asks, I am a Christian), but it's a really good book. it'll help you find insight. read it. you wont regret it.
Challenge to today's youth!.......2001-08-09
Even if you haven't heard Michael W. Smith's album of the same name, you should read this book! I highly recommend this book for everyone, but especially for teens who face the difficult task of trying to grow up in today's mixed-up world.
The title of the book, "This is Your Time", is also the title of a song he wrote after the Columbine tragedy. Michael tells about his experience singing at the memorial service and talking to Cassie Bernall's parents (check out my review of Misty Bernall's book "She Said Yes"). But this book isn't just about Columbine. Michael talks about the death of Rich Mullins (which deeply affected me as well) and Rich's impact on people. Michael also was a good friend of the late Bob Briner (author of Roaring Lambs) and he encourages Christians to get out there and make a difference.
He quotes Hebrews 12:1...
"Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."
Amen!

This Is Diffenitly YOUR Time! Make it Count!.......2001-01-16
This was a great book. At some points, very moving. My mom was reading the begining to me and had to stop because she was crying. The main idea of this book is: How Michael W. Smith came up for the idea of the song, THIS IS YOUR TIME. He got it from Rachel Scott after the Columbine shootings. This book also tells of some of MWS's own struggles and triumphs. It is a great book. A somber one at times, but true to the core. Please read this book and pass on its message: THIS IS YOUR TIME! MAKE IT COUNT!
great book.......2000-05-13
What a great book to read! This is really a good time to evaulate our lives in a modern world with a message to all that the test is yet to come.
May it be the next munute, hour , day or month we should try to do our best work. Smitty does gives some personal highlights of what he is doing to make his moment count, as we should make our time count.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and kept reading until I finished the book (it was a good time reading and getting to know him).
This Is Your Time: Make Every Moment Count.......2000-05-02
If you don't know Michael W. Smith, musically or as an author, this book is a great introduction to his spirit. His telling story of the Columbine tragedies affect on himself and what we all can learn from it is time well spent. Read the book, listen to the song, reflect on the meaning. Works like these in words and music bring some strange value to a tragedy at a time when we increasingly are asking "why"?

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
This book is AWFUL........2003-12-25
The book starts out okay but ended up making me sick. I have read 2 other books of hers and they are all the same(I was hoping it was not the case). Here is a synopsis of EVERY BOOK she writes including "A Moment in Time" : Heroine meets hero. Heroine marries hero. Heroine is sold into slavery by some nutcase. Heroine is raped repeatedly then passed off to some other wacko who also rapes her then gets her pregnant before the hero eventually finds her years later. During the rapes, the inner monologue of the heroine explains how she has to fight her attraction and response to the rapist. GAG! AWFUL! What kind of woman wants to read about that? I don't get it. I will never, never pick up another book by this woman again. Ms. Small obviously has some serious emotional issues. Horrible - just HORRIBLE. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS OR ANY OF HER BOOKS.
Wish I could give it 0 stars..........2003-12-10
Horrible book, this is not a romantic novel at all... The book starts out ok, in a distant magical past, the hero and heroine find each other things go well then a baby is born, bad things happen and then they lose each other (kind of a sad beginning), then the book goes downhill as it moves along, the story turns into mediocre, to unbelievably stupid, to good grieve this book freaking sucks!!!. A few centuries later, the hero and heroine find each other again, unfortunately the heroine is a complete idiot, again, things go well and she's pregnant by the love of her life (a wizard), but she decides to go and visit her husband's evil brother and 'be a family', of course him being evil, kidnaps her, sells her, she's bought, has the baby then gets pregnant again but this time by her buyer (what a gal!), and of course he dies. Then the story turns even more pathetic, when her 1st husband finally finds her, like another reviewer mentioned, her rapes her in front of others, they get together again, and gets pregnant by him (more babies! wow!), and when you think this joke is finally going to end, the hero gets wasted, end of that story. Then in a distant future they find each other again... and finally, this crap ends on a "have we met before?" note by the hero and heroine.
UGH! irritating book.
horrible horrible horrible!.......2003-11-12
I totally agree with cherylintn's review...I read this book years and years ago and just like cherylintn, it remains the worst romance novel I have ever read. The entire middle of the book wasn't my idea of romance at all but when I read the ending I actually threw the book across the room into the wall I was so disgusted. ROMANCE, Ms. Small, ROMANCE! This book is a travesty! Why bother having a hero when you just wasted him? I don't want to spoil the ending Ms. Small managed to spoil all on her own just writing the horrible thing but I don't suggest reading this one.
WOW.......2003-10-19
This was not just a book, but an adventure. It is well worth the read. just stick with it when you begin to get frustrated - all of it has meaning. Just like life if you never taste the bad you can't truly appreciate the good!
Lovely historical romance.......2003-03-14
Things change from moment to moment; Time constantly surprises us.
So learns Wynne in A Moment in Time, set in 11th century Wales. She goes from being an orphan taking care of the family estate until her brother comes of age ... to a sought-after potential bride... to the bethroed of the loving Prince Madoc. From there, she travels backwards in time and back again.
When she tries to mend a rift between brothers, she learns that, from one moment in time to the next, one's world can turn upside down, never to right itself.
Historically, this novel echoes much of what I learned in high school. As literature, it's incredibly well-written. Even at times in which the plot is predictable, the story travels well. This is one of the better historical romances that I've read. I recommend it highly, and I plan to read other books by Bertrice Small in the near future.
Book Description
Celebrating more than twenty-five years of the most eye-popping, mind-blowing, jump-off-the-couch-worthy sports highlights from the network that made them famous in the first placeEvery week for twenty-five years, ESPN's SportsCenter has collected seven days' worth of the most extraordinary (or sometimes boneheaded) plays, controversial calls, last-second miracles, and strangest fans in action. Each highlight clip with its commentary is a mini-story about a game, a player, or a season. A few of the best of the best: Michael Jordan's take off from the foul line in the 1988 slam-dunk competition; Derek Jeter's foul-ball dive to help defeat the Red Sox in 2004; Christian Laettner's buzzer beater against Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA Championship; Dwight Clarke completing "The Catch" in the 1982 NFC Championship; Brandi Chastain's bra-bearing victory celebration following the 1999 World Cup; and, of course, Dennis Rodman's hair. All of the trademark humor that makes ESPN the first stop and the last word for fans everywhere: razor-sharp commentary, infectious catchphrases, and unrepentant nicknaming. ESPN Plays of the Week is the first book ever to bring the nightly excitement of the most popular highlight reels in the world to the printed page.

must-have for sports fanatics.......2007-02-06
Got this for my eldest who eats, drinks, breathes sports. Great overview of many sports within one volume. ESPN books are great coverage of some of the odder moments in sports -- as well as the most unforgettable.
A great book to glance at or read cover-to-cover -- which my son did immediately!

Very Good.......2007-06-19
I really like the concept of this story. Going back into the past, just remembering, to try to make things right. I do admit I thought it got just a little tedious towards to the end but overall a very good read. Well worth your time.
Lovesong.......2005-01-31
Moments in Time is a lovely love story between a rock star, J.D. and Maggie, his wife of fifteen years. Their marriage is on the rocks after Maggie saw J.D. walking out of their hotel room shower with his former lover, Glory, trailing behind him.
A few days later, Maggie and J.D. were up for a television interview with a seasoned journalist, who was determined to break some news out of the meeting with rock n' roll's celebrity couple. J.D. decided to use the opportunity to show Maggie what she would be throwing away if she did not want to hear his explanations. And thus began a series of flashbacks through significant times in their lives, such as the first time they met, the lead-up to their marriage, the births of their children and other major events in their lives together.
The storyline is great but the flashbacks can be quite jarring. Also, the book failed to explain why Maggie distrusted J.D. to the extent that she would not listen to what he had to say when she saw him come out of the shower with Glory behind him. And though everything ended happily ever after, like all good romances do, it was a bit disappointing because of an incident right at the end that I thought was unnecessary by the author to bring the couple closer together.
But that aside, I recommend Mariah Stewart's books, especially her older ones. They are really good and this is no exception.
A contemporary you need to have on your keeper shelf........1998-08-24
This is not the type of romance I would normally select, but once I started reading it, I was immediately hooked. The story is about a successful rock singer from England, and the way it is told is through memories--quite unusual, but very effective. MOMENTS IN TIME brings out all of your emotions. I cried during many parts because the story is so tender and sad. This is a book that will stay in my mind for a long time and is definitely a KEEPER on my shelves. (angelca@ibm.net)
