Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

One of the best in this series.......2007-09-18
I read several of the books in this series a few years ago, then just stopped buying them, as they all started to sound the same. However, I picked this one up at the store the other day on a whim, to see how things were progressing.
Much of the style is the same - the phrase "can do no other" still appears an awful lot - but it seemed a little less prevalent than I remember from earlier books. However, I thought this particular one had better characterizations and more realistic reactions on the part of both the hero and the heroine to their situation.
The heroine's reactions, especially, I thought were finally closer to how a real woman would react to a) discovering the new hottie in her life is actually a Carpathian, b) waking up buried underground and c) her boyfriend expects her to do everything he says without question.
The resolution of these conflicts was a little simplistic, in my opinion. Going through a traumatic event just suddenly makes everything okay for our heroine, but doesn't actually change anything. But, overall I felt this title was one of the best in this series.
I found the hero, Rafael, quite appealing. As usual, he is tall, dark and dangerous, but also had some sensitive moments and was actually trying to see things from the heroines point of view, even if failing miserably for the most part. Let's just say that a Carpathian male can rationalize his way into doing whatever he wants like nobody's business.
All in all a solid entry that may actually entice me to read a few more in this series.
Disappointed Writer's Lack Of Culture.......2007-08-20
It's frustrating that in the year 2007 there's still people that not even know what the language is spoken in Brazil. Some not even know where it is geographically. More frustrating when it comes from well known best seller's writers like Christine Feehan, in Dark Secret, and many film producers. Brazil has nothing to do with Mexico or Argentina. Brazil is the only country in Central and South America that doesn't speak Spanish. They speak Portuguese only. How come someone writes a story about Brazilians and give them Spanish names like Chevez and De La Cruz? I'm sorry to say it this way, but there's a clear demonstration of ignorance. There's no such names from Brazilian origin. It's amazing to see movies about Brazil where Mariachis (traditionally from Mexico) are blowing trumpets to play Salsa as Brazilian music. Brazil is famous worldwide for their Samba and Lambada. I think movie producers and book writers should be a little more competent. This would make their work even better.
This could've been a good book..........2007-06-25
This could have been a good book but the main characters ruined it. I like a strong heroine as much as the next gal but Colby was just annoying. I found myself rolling my eyes every time she couldn't understand or was afraid of pretty much everything. I don't think I've ever read a story with a more dense or stubborn female character. Things have to go her way or she has a b***h fit unwilling to see reason or common sense. Raphael was just very one dimensional and more of a caveman then 18th century hunter/warrior.
The story dragged on forever it could easily have been half the length. The sex scenes were too long and too frequent. I liked the idea of the story but I couldn't get past my dislike for the main characters. I had never read a Feehan book before and unfortunately this one hasn't made me want to take a chance on another.
exactly what I would expect!.......2007-06-17
This book was a wonderful book i enjoyed it so much i read it again whitch is unuasual for me.
HOT.......2007-04-05
I agree with the other reviewers who thought Rafael was a bit of a jerk, but, give the guy a break. He hasn't felt emotion or any of that crap for centuries. Naturally our hero is going to be rough around the edges. I am reading this book a second time and really enjoy it. Sometimes I find myself skimming over paragraphs when I find Feehan is re-hashing thrice established information (I did this the first time I read it, too), but most of this book is a gripping read. I just with they used an uglier guy for the cover. It slows down my reading when I have to keep stopping to gaze at the cover every couple of pages. lol. I would recommend this book to anyhow who likes romance, but is getting bored with the usual plain vanilla bodice rippers.

Biased opinion.......2007-08-11
I am an unabashed fan of Frederick Buechner. His use of stories enforces my personal conviction that doctine preached is less effective than Christ lived...inside or outside the church. I love his style and he is one of "those" three or four that I wish I could share a meal with and literally watch him tell his stories.
Secrets in the dark.......2007-07-03
Frederick Buechner is a warm, loving, witty, intellectual whom I greatly admire. After reading this book I have grown even fonder of him and I like to think grown in my faith a great deal too. It was my church service every morning. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I loved it.
Amazing, essential collection of sermons.......2007-03-28
Frederick Buechner is an extremely honest and emotional preacher and this is a book of over thirty of his best sermons. It is easy to identify with his readable, inspiring and imaginative sermons. Buechner is optimistic and never boring--he speaks of a gospel of love that invites to confront and continue to engage our doubts; he speaks of a gospel that isn't overly literal but speaks truth in stories and emotion. He finds ways to engage his audience and certainly these ways are not lost on the page. Surely, a book for every Christain to have, a guide for the path.
Secrets in the Dark: A Life in Sermons.......2007-02-17
I believe that this collection of sermons by Fredrerick Buechner is profoundly rich in sensitivity and wisdom, proclaiming without a hint of judgment and with authentic humility and integrity, the good and reassuring news of God's mysterious and redeeming presence in this world, including to believers, non-believers, non-believers-who-wish-they-could believe, and the indifferent.
An easy and inspiring read........2006-08-01
Frederick Buechner has great style, excellent writing and super content. I opened it and immediately became became engrossed.

Chaos Unleashed upon your Mind!.......2007-01-06
The Games Workshop chaotic pantheon has always been an inspiring, and at times frightening, expose of evil and horrors. This book was a delight, written with concise detail accompanied by memorable art. I have followed the GW chaos line since the release of the Realm of Chaos books nearly 20 years ago. Those two books are, and always will be, for me the height of GW's chaotic catalog. This book is a perfect edition for anyone wanting to delve into the dark realms of the GW universe without all the game stats. An incredible book that is written with such exactness and detail that one might imagine they might have really acquired an ancient and forbidden text like the Necronomicon. Worth every penny! The only reason I resisted in giving 5 stars is simply because I remember fondly the art of the Realms books, which at times has been duplicated here. It stands out over the new pieces of which many just do not have that feel of an ancient evil text.

From the Horse's Mouth.......2005-08-28
I am the co-author of Woman Who Glows in the Dark. I had not visited this page for quite some time and was deeply troubled to read the review written by Edward B. Holman. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I feel that Mr. Holman has made some grave misjudgements about an author he has never met. He has also reported information, inaccurately and out of context, regarding a book I find it difficult to believe he has read. None of his references get beyond p. 28, and Chapter 1 starts on p. 41.
I spent eight months writing this book with Elena. That work involved traveling through Guatemala and Mexico with her, meeting her Aztec teacher Ehekateotl, staying at her home in New Mexico for weeks at a time, and meeting and interviewing her students and some clients. As someone who knows her personally and had to do extensive research to write this book, let me tell you, from the proverbial horse's mouth, what really happened and something of who this woman is.
Mr. Holman writes "Curanderismo is mainly the province of the people who are, essentially, exorcists, and their conterparts, brujos, brujas, and hechiceros, are people who are paid by their clients to place hexes on others."
This is incorrect. First of all, many modern curanderos are midwives, herbalists, chiropractors, bone-setters, and counselors. For a more in-depth discussion of this topic, please see, Chapter 1: Types of Curanderos and Their Specialties (beginning on p. 69).
Second, to infer that this class of healers, and Elena by extension, deals only with the darker arts is a gross mistatement.
Elena is a healer of the highest integrity--and, I might add, an inspiring humility. Every time we met to write, she spoke of the responsibility that healers have toward their clients. She never claimed any "magical powers" for herself but emphasized over and over that she was just God's instrument.
The stories she tells in this book are of clients who were healed in a profound way. You have only to read them to see the love and commitment she brings to this work. Writing this book with her brought profound healing into my own life.
I also saw the fruits of her work in her students, whom I met and interviewed for the book. The foundation in healing that she gave them was solid and rich. I refer you to Chapter 6, which is filled with stories about what she taught them about curanderismo. Read the book and let these students, who have worked and traveled with her for years, speak for themselves.
Mr. Holman goes on to say, "she replaces it [the 'conventional wisdom of curanderismo']with a concoction that she largely invented herself, with the help of a couple of fraudulent pretenders from Mexico who claim to be the heirs of the magical and religious traditions of the Aztec Indians."
Again, I was there. I traveled with her to Mexico and spent time in the community center of her teacher Ehekateotl, who is truly one of the spiritual heirs of the Mexica (Aztec) tradition. How do I know this is true? Because I met the people he helps in his community and found them to be good and intelligent souls. I helped them to build a huge altar for the Dia de los Muertos ceremony and did ceremony with them. I was permitted to visit some of their sacred sites. I listened to their stories, I met other healers who deeply respected Ehe.
All I can say is that Ehekateotl is a man of deep humility, great humor, and dedication to his people. To call such a kind and generous man, sight unseen, a "fraudulent pretender," as Mr. Homan does, is inexcusable. Ehe lives very humbly, has little money, and spends his days healing people who come to the community center where he lives. (And they keep coming, obvously, because they get results.) He is really quite overworked and kind, and carries on with a lot of courage.
To really understand how a culture could go underground to survive the Spanish Conquest, take a look at Chapter 7: The Gods That Refused to Die. It's not unthinkable that cultures go underground. When I wrote A FOREST OF KINGS and MAYA COSMOS with Linda Schele and David Friedel, it was the same story. The Aztecs, as well as the Maya, are alive and well.
On the subject of cursing, Mr. Holman quotes Elena as writing, "'Some times the "cursed" individual is suffering from some kind of chemical imbalance, such as schizophrenia, and needs medication and psychiatric help.'... That is the impression I get of her. People come to her expecting to be treated in the way that any other curandera would treat them, and she sends them off to someone who will get them started on Prozac. Thanks a lot, Ms. Avila!"
This is taken entirely out of context. I quote from p. 53 of the book, "Recently, I saw an elder named Anna who had give a 'curandero' her life savings--ten thousand dollars--to take away a hex. I was deeply saddened by her story. Her thirty-six-year-old daughter had been diagnosed as having paranoid schizophrenia but was refusing to take her medication."
Elena goes on to say that the daughter was becoming violent and was unable to care for her small children. When the woman brought her daughter to Elena, who is also a trained psychiatric nurse, "It was obvious to me that her daughter had a chronic condition and needed to take her medication. Not taking her medication was what was causing her to become violent with her children."
This brings up an important point, that there is, as Mr. Holman implies, some sort of "right" or "orthodox" way to be a curandera. This is a terribly limited way of looking at any healing modality. A true healer applies the APPROPRIATE AND EFFECTIVE cure for the situation, not some kind of rigid prescription.
What Elena writes about in this book is how she has taken what she learned of curanderismo and applied it to THIS culture. Sometimes that looks very, very traditional indeed; and sometimes it looks creative and appropriate and effective. The stories told in the book, particularly the story of Donna and her soul retrieval in Chapter 4: The Weeping Soul, p. 193, attest to how skillfully Elena works with her patients and how astute she is about finding ways to help them.
I would also like to address Mr. Holman's remark "I am quite sure she charges for her sessions, her lectures and tours and workshops, and anything else she can charge people for. And I doubt if she is cheap, either." It is true that in traditional cultures a healer works by accepting donations. But it is also true that they never have to go without food or lodging or the necessities of life because the community values them and takes care of them. To expect a curandera in America to accept only donations is just absurd. Elena started out this way, she told me, but soon discovered that people would give her $15 for two hours of work. One wealthy client, who had a $100-a-day cocaine habit, handed her a twenty for hours of work.
Why do we believe that traditional healers don't deserve to be paid? We pay our medical doctors, don't we? Yes, Elena does charge, reasonably, but I also know for a fact that she would not turn away someone who really needed her help. When we were in Mexico City together doing research for the book, the owner of the hotel we stayed at found out she was a curandera and sent his whole staff to her. She didn't charge a penny and willingly worked on everyone because that is her calling.
It is also very interesting that the book that Mr. Holman holds up as the ideal, CURANDERISMO by Robert Trotter, does not seem to have been well-reviewed by him. I quote from his review of that volume: "This book is what one would expect from a team of American academics starting from scratch trying to assemble a definitive body of knowledge while based on US soil and focusing on a population located inside of the US." On the other hand, Elena has lived her whole life in this culture and WOMAN WHO GLOWS IN THE DARK is written with depth and intelligence, honesty and passion.
I just do not believe that Mr. Holman carefully read this book and I am curious about the virulence of his attack.
I can only urge you to read this book and judge for yourself. It is a wonderful record of the history of curanderismo, of love and service to others, and of deep respect for a wonderful, endlessly creative, living healing tradition.
Another New Age book for the gullible.......2005-08-22
Lewt me start off by saying that I have been interviewing curanderos and curanderas in Mexico, along with their clients, for 15 years now, and I have read all of the major books on the subject, and I know what curanderismo is and what it isn't. This book is just another New Age piece of fiction, such as the market abounds with, and the author is taking advantage of the gullible with this work.
Curanderismo is mainly the province of the people who are, essentially, exorcists, and their conterparts, brujos, brujas, and hechiceros, are people who are paid by their clients to place hexes on others. Besides that, they do treat regular illnesses, and also they treat "folk illnesses" such as "susto", with prayers and simple cleansing ceremonies known as limpias. In addition, they sometimes perform candle burning magic, usually wherein images and statues of saints are involved, and these are known as "trabajos" - "works".
Avila has concocted a scheme of things that overlooks and actually, at times, rejects the conventional wisdom about curanderismo and she replaces it with a concoction that she largely invented herself, with the help of a couple of fraudulent pretenders from Mexico who claim to be the heirs of the magical and religious traditions of the Aztec Indians.
Here are just a very small sampling of the nonsense and contradictions that she offers, which, for anyone who is actually familiar with Mexican curanderismo, do not represent in any fashion the conventional wisdom or what one would find on ones own if one were to interview real curanderos or their clients.
On page 21 she states: "Although I do not believe in curses, I respect the cultural perspective of those who do, and I listen to them with respect" ... "Some times the 'cursed' individual is suffering from some kind of chemical imbalance, such as schizophrenia, and needs medication and psychiatric help". So, what she is saying is that she completely rejects and dismisses out of hand the very foundations of curanderismo, and since she obviously des not anything about curanderismo, she finds this very easy to do. That is the impression I get of her. People come to her expecting to be treated in the way that any other curandera would treat them, and she sends them off to someone who will get them started on Prozac. Thanks a lot, Ms. Avila!
More: "Curanderas build up a person's energy and self-esteem, and teach him or her how to break the vicious cycle of depression and hopelessness." So, here we can see that her concept of curanderas is that they are essentially counselors who give pep talks to people, and this sort of speculation derives from her fumbling around to idealize them as some sort of folk psychoanalysts along with her not having any contact with any real ones wherein she would find out soon enough that none of this is true.
Page 23: (in which she is making the assertion, apparently, that the principal roots of curanderismo come from Africa) "As a curandera, I use ritual, ceremonies, dances, drums, rattles, divinations, painting of the face and the body during ceremony, and fasting as tools of healing." That all sound like the sort of thing your average New Age shaman would do, but I have never heard of a real curandera doing any of that.
She says that she had "Aztec teachers" (p. 23). These people, it turns out, are a couple of men who claim that they are part of a tradition that has been kept alive secretly by members of the Aztec priesthood who operated underground for the last 500 years ago before resurfacing and appearing in Northern New Mexico where they became Avila's gurus. What we have here is a tale that seems to be copied from Gardner (of Wicca fame) and Carlos Castaneda (with his ficticious Yaqui guru "Don Juan").
I won't elaborate on the text, but her description of the "spiritual theory" of curanderismo, as she describes it, on pages 27 and 28 indicates that she does not understand the core concepts of curanderismo and brujería. This seems to indicate that she has always been insulated from actual curanderismo and its practice, and that, even though her clients keep trying to bring her into the fold, she seems to not be interested because she has been promoting this pseudo-curanderismo that she invented for so long that she cannot even begin to accept the conventional wisdom such as what the people who really did grow up steeped in this culture hold. She also thinks that people who are under curses are only suffering from "suggestion", and that this is the reason for their reactions. This is a point that we have discussed at length in the 1curanderismo group in earlier exchanges. People who do not believe that curses are possible contend that this is all a psychological occurrence based on the fear reaction that occurs in people who believe themselves to be cursed, and this allows an explanation as to why people might get sick or even die. It is all psychosomatic, according to these explanations. However, we know that brujos and hechiceros go to pains to prevent their victims from knowing that they have been cursed. Avila also claims that people who supposedly cure the victims of these supposed fictitious curses are charging a lot of money and bilking their clients for bogus services That is not true either. Certainly, there are plenty who do that, but it is well known that the best curanderos never ask for money. They only accept donations. Inasmuch as she is willing to tar all legitimate curanderos and curanderas who are actually practicing curanderismo and doing what curanderos and curanderas do more often that anything else with this sort of cynical charge, I think that no one should object to her being exposed for the way that she presents herself and how she does business either. Let us be perfectly honest here. I am quite sure she charges for her sessions, her lectures and tours and workshops, and anything else she can charge people for. And I doubt if she is cheap, either.
If anyone wants to read about curanderismo from the standpoint of ligitimate researchers, you might try the Trotter book, which I think is the best in its field in English (some excellent studies have been written in Mexico, but they are in Spanish). Such books, you will find, almost categorically contradict Avila's assertions. The shame of all this is that there are, no doubt, a lot of people who would really like to know more about curanderismo, and as long as Avila is allowed to dominate the scene with this nonsense, people are going to have a hard time getting at the facts. I think that is about time that she were exposed for the fraud that she is, if only for the sake of those who might benefit from actually knowing about curanderismo, which is a fascinating subject. One person who would likely benefit from such knowledge is Avila herself.
invaluable wisdom and knowledge on modern Curanderismo.......2003-09-16
One of the most, if not the most important book of Modern Curanderismo. Lovely book, that is hard to place down, and belongs in every Healer's shelf. Beautifully written, touching, and very informative. The book teaches the importance of not just healing the body and mind, but also the soul. As a Puerto Rican Espiritista and Santero, I have really appreciated the deep wisdom and body of knowledge that came from this book. I Highly recommend this book. The lessons learned can be applied by any healer or spiritual councilor, no matter what ones spiritual path or religion, or race may be. The wisdom and knowledge that Elena Avila shares with her readers and students is invaluable.
Well worth the money, and it is like having a wise sage or Curandera in your living room. I hope to see future works by Elena Avila, as I believe she has a voice and knowledge that needs to be heard. I am late commer to this book, and am happy to have had the chance to find it, and enjoy, brazo to you Seniora Elena Avila. Luz, Progresso, y Caridad!
This is a wonderful book.......2002-03-25
There is no end of thanks for such insight as is reflected in this book. Elena Avila is a selfless healer. What she does is the blessing of the Creator. Anyone interested in Healing will do well to read this book.
Exceptional writing by Joy Parker.......2000-05-30
This book is a beautiful and powerful testimony of the potential that lies within each of us to heal. Joy Parker accurately details the experiences and inner world of a curnadera working in the Aztec tradition. Her mastery of language and her ability to translate on paper the magic of Elena's work is exceptional. I highly recommend this book to any serious seeker on the path of healing, spirituality, native studies/indigenous cultures, and/or women's studies.

Variety is the Spice of Erotic Romance!.......2007-06-22
Secrets, Volume 18 showcases four talented authors whose novellas demonstrate the broad sweeping array of stories representative of the rapidly growing genre of erotic romance.
RAE MONET returns with "Lone Wolf Three" and her appealing Wolf Warriors. The serious minded Wolf Warrior, Lakota Blackthorn has been sent to negotiate an squabble over planetary land politics with young and opinionated rebel Leader, Taban Zias. Taban meets his match in Lakota, but soon comes to realize her steadying influence makes her his perfect mate--but convincing Lakota is another matter. Monet's characters crackle with life and an emotional realism that too many erotic romances miss for the sake of "heat". In my opinion, Rae Monet is a writer worth watching!
LINDA GAYLE's, "Heart Full of Stars", tells the high stakes story of a Fanta Rae, a lounge singer on the run from an alien slave trader who refuses to acknowledge her hard-won freedom. With her transport broken down, she is stranded at a Mars Outpost with the first human man she's seen in nine years--but ex marine Alex Decker is still mourning over the loss of his family any years ago. Fanta's entrance into his life rocks his world in more ways than one. Reading like a full length novel, this novella boasts a fully realized plot and a tender, satisfying ending.
LARISSA IONE's,"Flesh to Fantasy", paints a contemporary backdrop for loner game geek, Kelsa to escape the uncontrollable pain of the real world in exchange for virtual one that leaves her captain of her heart. Easy going paramedic, Trent agrees to enter Kelsa's world of erotic fantasy so that he can turn their relationship into one of real world pleasures. A fun, fast moving romp.
CYNTHIA EDEN's, "The Wolf's Mate", finds Kat Hardy's life in danger. When sexy wolfman, Michael Morlet rescues her in a dark alley, he realizes he's found the lifemate he's been yearning for. Somehow he must earn Kat's trust, and convincer her that she is destined to be his lifemate. Problem is, someone is trying to kill Kat,and danger lurks around every sexy corner. A fun, sometimes hilarious romp, the hunky and ardent Michael Morlet is a wolfman readers won't soon forget.

Book Description
Authored by a former spammer, this is a methodical, technically explicit expose of the inner workings of the SPAM economy. Readers will be shocked by the sophistication and sheer size of this underworld.
From the Author: "You may hate spam and think all spammers are evil, but listen to my story and see why I do this and more importantly, HOW."
For most people, the term "SPAM" conjures up the image of hundreds of annoying, and at times offensive, e-mails flooding their inbox every week. But for a few, SPAM is a way of life that delivers an adrenaline rush fueled by cash, danger, retribution, porn and the avoidance of local, federal, and international law enforcement agencies. "Inside the SPAM Cartel" offer readers a never-before seen view inside this dark sub-economy. You'll meet the characters that control the flow of money as well as the hackers and programmers committed to keeping the enterprise up and running. You may disagree with their objectives, but you can't help but to marvel at their ingenuity and resourcefulness in defeating spam filters, avoiding being identified, and staying one step ahead of the law.
* Spam makes up now 64% of all email sent and it is said to be the most annoying part of being online.
* You'll meet the characters that control the flow of money as well as the hackers and programmers committed to keeping the enterprise up and running.

The Editors Should Be Fired.......2007-08-01
Although Syngress apparently employed a Technical Editor (Jeffrey Posluns) and a Copy Editor (Judy Eby) in preparing this book, it's riddled with both technical and grammatical errors. For experienced email server administrators, Inside the Spam Cartel is an almost complete waste of time. Novices would learn a great deal from this book, but much of what they learned would be wrong. (For example, on p. 183 the author claims that a public key allows one to decrypt a message encrypted using PGP. Or take this discussion of BGP, from p. 64: "Each BGP router is given an Autonomous System (AS) number and each AS is unique and directly identifies the router by name.")
GET Rich Quick ....NOT... SAVE your MONEY FO0L.......2007-07-19
The title sells the book. It has will not help you LEARN to do this. Think he will help you HACK to get e-mail lists ? NO? Think HE will tell you HOW TO STAY OUT of Jail ? NO. Think he will tell you how to make easy $$. NO
Think he will CASH IN ON YOUR STUPIDITY ? YES YES YES YES !!!
make him RICH please buy the book FOOLS !
Childish. Why reward a crook?.......2006-01-05
Well, the author is clearly a Chickenboner - the book is full of grammatical errors, especially toward the end. It also has major factual errors, as other reviewers have pointed out. (I skimmed it at the local library.) Also, he's clearly a criminal, since spamming is illegal in most jurisdictions, so I give it 1 star.
If Only He Did Not Play So Fast and Loose With facts.......2005-07-12
The Vikings from Monty Python's Flying Circus love SPAM so much, that the mere mention of the word has them break out in song, singing "Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!". For e-mail users, there are not many who would give the same response. We get it. We despise it. We wonder how many times we will get the same messages over and over again. But do we truly understand the machinations behind the scenes of the SPAM industry? It is this fundamental question that drives "Inside the SPAM Cartel: Trade Secrets From The Dark Side" (Spammer X, Jeffrey Posluns, Technical Editor, Syngress Press, 2004, 413 Pages). Written by an insider, the book provides detailed information and background but at times falters because of some very strongly stated opinions and facts that are just plain incorrect, as well as a very significant omission.
The book starts out strongly, as the author profiles the typical Spammer he is associated with and moves on to show that their is inherent trust among spammers. This trust, it seems, is based on necessity so that they can help each other make money. Money is part of a larger theme in this book because it is money that drives spammers and the content they deliver. Did you ever wonder why you see less and less pornography spam and increased amounts of messages for home mortgages? Because that is where the money is to be made.
The author makes a strong presentation throughout the book on how SPAM came to be from a simple but fatal flaw in SendMail, taking advantage of an Internet Architecture that was based on trust and not security, to the big money it is today. Consider that even if SPAM filters catch 99% of SPAM, the Spammers are still making money. Why? Because people are buying. The author not only gives an education on the many different types of SPAM, but shows you the tricks of the trade to bypass SPAM filters and get SPAM Messages read. You will also learn how to create a digital forensic trail to create a profile of a Spammer. You will also learn how they create profiles of you and your behaviours. You will also learn how the CAN-SPAM Act works, what is covered under the law, how to comply with the law and the huge legal loopholes that exist in the law that has Spammers scoffing at the law.
Yes the book is comprehensive, but suffers from what this reader considers to be some fatal flaws which take some of the sheen off of the credibility of the author and of the editorial vetting process of the publisher (note that this is not referring to the technical editing, but the editing to validate content. First, it is safe to assume that "Spammer X" is a citizen of a country in the British Commonwealth. How is this known? When you read in his book that the CAN-SPAM Act was passed by "Parliament", it is clear of the author's origin and his lack of knowledge of "big picture" issues. This is further compounded by the author's statement that CAN-SPAM will eventually become international law. This statement misses the point that there is no such thing as International Law that is binding on any country that chooses to ignore it.
The most egregious number that sticks out in this reader's mind comes from this quote in Chapter 10:
"With an estimated 273,706,064 Americans on the Internet...".
When this reader saw that number, some checking had to be done. Keep in mind that this book was written in 1994. According to the 2005 CIA World Factbook, last updated on June 30, 2005, the 2005 U.S. Population is estimated to be 295,734,134. That would mean the author is stating that 92.5% of Americans are on the Internet. This is very amazing when you consider that only 235,404,000 (and change) Americans are over the age of 14, and that only 260,000,000 live above the poverty line.
The reason that this concerns this reader is that if the author has played this fast and loose with these facts, and it was not caught in the editorial process, how can any of the other numbers in the book be trusted? It pains me to say this given my distrust of IT analyst firms, but how can an author who has played so fast and loose with numbers and facts be in a position to criticize anyone else's number?
Finally, I am disappointed that the author devotes a 29 page appendix and numerous references in the book on the anti-SPAM features of Microsoft Exchange, while totally ignoring the built in anti-SPAM features of Lotus Domino 6, which has over 100,000,000 users worldwide. Before writing this review, I asked the technical editor about this. He indicated that it was more than likely a reflection of the experience of the author(s), and that on at least two occasions he had made recommendations to include other products and service types as well. The author and Syngress did not do so, and it leaves this reader feeling a little empty.
Who Should Read This Book?
This book should be read by people interested in SPAM as a topic, information security managers, e-mail administrators, and educators.
The Scorecard
Because of the opinionated presentation, in some cases based on suspect facts and information, I am giving this book two ratings.
For readability, technical education and content: Birdie on short Par 4
For errors, mistakes of fact and opinions: Bogey on a Par 5 Reachable in 2 and playing downwind. The author should not have duck-hooked his drive into the trees.
Interesting read as long as you don't throw it out the window.......2005-07-01
This book is basically 'how to spam' for newbies; or 'how to analyze spam', if you prefer. In any case, it's for technical users. If you are looking for a novel, check "Spam Kings" instead.
Anyway, this book is written by a spammer, which (quite often) tries to justify himself as being a "legimate spammer" (meaning that he will send the stuff even if he knows it's overpriced, the spam was not opt-in, etc). This becomes quite annoying after a while, specially because he says "I don't care if you want to receive the spam or not; you are going to receive it". Thanks man.
As for a short advice on whether you should buy this book: If you are a hacker wanna be, or have an interest in security, it's a decent read.

Book Description
A taut psychological thriller for teens
Seventeen-year-old Jeff thought he would never again have to deal with his older brother, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence. But after six years, Troy’s sentence has been overturned on a technicality and he is released from prison. He returns to a family deeply divided about having him back home. Jeff can’t forget how his life was disrupted by his brother, how his family had to move to another state and start over. Still, his parents believe things will be different now. But Troy’s return makes a mess of Jeff ’s life – at home, at school, and with his girlfriend. When Jeff ’s rival on the soccer field turns up missing, Jeff suspects Troy is involved, and he sets out to prove it. But nothing could prepare Jeff for what happens as he gets closer to the truth.
With unexpected flashes of humor, David Klass once again gives readers a gripping, multilayered novel about good and evil and the powerful bonds of family.

Toxic Son - Hang on, it's Gonna Be a Bumpy Ride!.......2005-10-06
Jeff, 17 dreads the day his 21-year-old brother Troy is returning home. Troy served 5 years in a New York State penitentiary for murdering a classmate. Troy's infamy and history of violent, erratic behavior acted as a toxic substance in the family and Jeff suffered fallout from his brother's bad reputation.
Troy's homecoming is somewhat anticlimactic. Their father's friend, Walter Smith hires Troy as a bag clerk at his grocery store. A genuinely kind and fair man, Smith believes in giving people chances and, in an amazing show of faith allows Troy access to the cash registers. Smith's son, nicknamed "Smitty," is much like his father - a big, gentle boy, he cries over the plight of loggerhead turtles, dolphins, fish and other marine life. He has a heart as big as he is.
Jeff has a lot to contend with. After years of keeping Troy a secret, he reluctantly disclosed Troy's existence and the family secret to his girlfriend, Beth. This results in her father forcing her to break up with Jeff. Jeff's English teacher, a brilliant man whose scientific career was derailed by an insensitive professor encourages his pupils to ponder philosophical issues. A progressive man, he insists his pupils shoot for the stars. It is plain he cares a lot about his pupils.
Jeff and his classmates play an especially cruel prank on a vulnerable student who never forgives them. Once the cat is out of the bag, the boy who'd been tricked attacked the prankster, which resulted in an act of violence. Jeff, too is targeted for violence when his teammates beat him in the shower after another classmate goes missing after a run-in with Troy.
Troy, meanwhile is noxious gas in the family. He brings suspicion into the house; he is at the top of everybody's short list when Jeff's classmate disappears. The local police hound the family and finally, Troy moves to a neighboring town.
In time, Jeff finally goes to visit Troy. He unearths facets of Troy's personality that he never knew existed. In spending a day with Troy with some hair raising experiences, Jeff decides that walking on the wild side is not for him. As he leaves Troy yet again, he discovers clues that lead him down an very dangerous path.
This is a very intense and serious book. There are parts that might make you cry. The natural kindess of Walter Smith and his family are especially moving and the story's close is sure to bring tears to the eyes. This is definitely an author to watch out for - this is one very cutting edge book!
Richie's Picks: DARK ANGEL.......2005-10-02
"The links between brain chemistry and behavior reveal problems facing research in social and political science if the life sciences are ignored. An estimated 11 million American children take Ritalin and many others exhibit ADD, ADHD, or other learning disabilities. Over 83 million Americans take Prozac, Zoloft and other medications for depression or other psychological conditions, including seasonal affective disorder and sexual addiction. More directly related to politics, environmental toxins such as lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, or manganese can damage the brain and increase risks of criminal violence and other behavioral problems. These empirical observations are relevant to public policies in education, criminal justice, or health care, and indicate the need to reconsider theories of human and social political behavior. To do so, however, is impossible without a detailed knowledge of human biology."
--BIOLOGY AND POLITICS: Linking Nature and Nurture by R. D. Masters, Department of Government, Dartmouth College.
"My parents went to get Troy in our SUV. It was a Saturday and they left early in the morning. It would take them till about noon to make it to the prison, and I figured they would be home with Troy before nightfall.
"I didn't go. I didn't need to make an excuse or offer an explanation--I just said that I wasn't going, and they didn't press me.
"I figured I would see him soon enough.
From our front porch, I watched my parents walk across our front lawn toward our blue SUV. My mom was all decked out for the reunion in a yellow dress, pumps, and carefully applied makeup. I wondered if while she had been applying her eyeliner and lipstick, she had been conscious of the fact that she was on her way to a state penitentiary.
"My poor mother. When she reached the SUV's door, she turned and waved to me once, and there was such tension in the simple gesture that I wanted to go give her a hug and beg her to stay here with me, and not subject herself to this ordeal. My mom is a tall woman, just an inch or two shorter than my dad. She's had a problem with nervous tension over the past few years, and she's on medication to help her stay calm.
"I could tell by looking at her eyes that she hadn't slept a wink the previous night. I wondered how many pills she had taken that morning."
Seventeen year-old Jeff Hastings used to live in Upstate New York with his parents and his big brother Troy. But the family was totally ostracized by their community--and Jeff seriously beaten up--after Troy was arrested, tried as an adult, and convicted of plunging a seven inch knife into a classmate. Troy received a life sentence for the crime.
The family has made a new start in a small town amid the New Jersey pine barrens. Jeff has a beautiful girlfriend Beth, lots of friends on the soccer team where he's a backup wing, and the reputation for being a good guy.
But after five years in prison Troy is being released on a technicality and coming back to live with his family. Jeff is convinced Troy's coming to Pineville will ruin Jeff's life a second time. More importantly, Jeff is sure Troy is evil and dangerous.
"Had Troy really changed? Do bad people become good through penance and reflection? I sat there on the corner of the bed and watched the afternoon give way to evening, as the branches from the crab apple seemed to twist longer and longer in the fading light, and I couldn't help doubting it. I knew Troy. For years he was my big brother, my closest friend, my teacher. I had learned from him, and then, even as a young child, I had sensed that there was something wrong with him, something missing in him, and I had gradually turned against him. By the time he was arrested for murder, I had become very afraid of him.
"Leopards don't change their spots. Crab apple trees don't suddenly grow cherries. Troy would never change."
"Don't you plead me your case, don't bother to explain
Don't even show me your face, 'cause it's a crying shame
Just go back to the rock from under which you came
Take the sorrow you gave and all the stakes you claim
And don't forget the blame."
--Fiona Apple, "Criminal"
Jeff is incredibly bitter before Troy even arrives. When he informs Beth about the impending arrival of the brother he'd never previously told her about, Beth's protective father immediately forbids her to even talk to Jeff.
Jeff doesn't dare tell anyone else about Troy.
In the most suspenseful young adult novel I've read since the Edgar Award-winning ACCELERATION, David Klass probes the biochemical, societal, and religious theories regarding the roots of evil.
Klass' 2001 young adult novel YOU DON'T KNOW ME remains one of my all-time favorite YAs. In DARK ANGEL, as with YOU DON'T KNOW ME, we meet a beautiful girl and her seemingly overprotective father. The significant teacher character this time is a science teacher, Mr. Tsuyki, rather than the music teacher, Mr. Steenwilly. (We do get an extremely brief look at Beth playing her cello that hints of the band practice descriptions in YOU DON'T KNOW ME.) But the darkness in John's story of abuse from YOU DON'T KNOW ME doesn't begin to compare to this disturbing tale of two brothers.

On Target.......2006-06-29
Anyone who says that this book is not well researched or written I would have to guess is a Mason and is protecting the image of Freemasonry. It's quite clear that the quotes in the book are from Freemasonry's teachings. They are the word of Pike who is the father of American Freemasonry. It's apparent that members were and are deliberately misled into believing false doctrine. I think it's sad that men choose to defend this garbage instead of standing up and denouncing an organization that is an obvious lie. Very sad how gullible these guys are. The authors supporting Ed Deckers position are the authors of Freemasonry. It doesn't get much clearer than that.
Why not to waste your time with this book.......2006-01-19
When I was young an adult friend discovered my grandfather was a mason and provided this book in an attempt to thwart my interest in the organization. I read it and was quite disturbed. I actually attempted to spread Decker's filth because I foolishly believed him. I spent nearly 5 years researching freemasony during which time I satisfied myself that my loving grandfather who was also a pastor in the first christian church wasn't a part of some "Godless Cult". I am now quite ashamed that I contributed to his twisted attempt to chastise masons. He seems to have a grudge against Mormonism, but I am still not sure how he dragged us into it. I am now a master mason myself after much prayer and research pertaining to my decision to be initiated. And much to my pleasure I have found masonry to be an organization of quite moral and, in my geography, christian men who have quite a fear and respect for God and his teachings through Jesus. Freemasonry is no religion or cult or whatever Decker and his SaintsAlive group claim it to be. However, masonry has bestowed upon me a much clearer view of what it means to be a christian through its teachings of friendship, morality, and brotherly love. I strongly encourage anyone thinking about reading this book to please, please form your own opinion of masonry and not to mix Decker's knowledge and desecration of Mormonism with such an honorable group as freemasons.
He truly has misinterpreted masonry and I admonish the public when reading other masonic literature, not to look upon it as a religion, but a system of morality whereby a man may discover truths through which he may live a life that is pleasing in God's eyes, and resist tipping the balance of his life towards evil.
If it must be associated with religion let it not be a religion itself nor an antagonist to religion, but a complement to religion through which men may carry out their own religous beliefs in their own society.
Decker proved to me that he has no true knowledge of masonry.
I really don't know much of Mormonism, but the book seems to be more of a story he made up than anything factual. It is odd that the title says nothing of Mormonism, but the inside is a constant struggle to link masons to mormons. And for the sake of this review, this is one of the few books that I would throw in the fire.

EXCELLENT BOOK
Well written. Well documented. Very well explained association of Freemasonry with paganism and the occult.

Decker's Sad Attempt to make a living........2001-11-26
First off, don't even waste your money on this book or any work by Ed Decker. The man makes a living off bashing Freemasonry by writing books and speaking and promoting himself.
Moromons happen to be Decker's other target for bashing and attacks in once again, a sorry way of making living and promoting himself. He happened to be a Mormon himself but was tossed out after it was found that he comminted adultry.
Decker just uses the same old tired arugments againest Freemasonry that others used in the past. However these objections were never fully reserached, some are half truths, while other are just outright lies.
Decker doesn't write books and speak about Freemasonry or the Mormon Church to inform people, if he wanted to do that, he'd be honest with them, he only does it for it profit and futher to promote himself.

I'm going to get these books back in print! Can you help?.......2002-03-07
I'm launching a letter campaign to get these books back. It is ridiculous what people are spending for a book that should be available to young girls and old alike. Libraries can't keep these books in stock! If you want to help me this is what I'm doing: I will mail a letter a day to the Ballantine/Fawcet press asking that they publish The Secret of the Unicorn Queen Series. I will say that there is a genuine need for these books and that they will sell. In order to prove the high demand for these books it would be great to have other people send in letters too. Anyone who is interested can e-mail me (it's a hotmail account with my name) or just write and mail a letter. This shouldn't be a herculean labor, these books are marketable and will sell, the publisher can't go wrong. (I love the cover art too-Rowena is brilliant!)
Fabulous!.......2000-06-30
I read these books over and over until I was in middle school. They're great! I was a dummy and donated them to my school library of the time and they're long gone. That was over 10 years ago and I'm still kicking myself.
If you know where to get this book..........1999-04-12
I read "Swept Away" years ago, and when I went to the library to check it out again, it was gone. Disappeared. I cried. If any kind soul reads this and knows where I can get a copy of ANY of the "Unicorn Queen" books, I would be eternally greatfull if you would write to me and tell me where. Thank You!
Wonderful For All Ages!.......1999-03-06
I got the series from a friend and just keep readng them over and over! I love them! I just can't put them down! I woiuld recommend this series to ANY lover of fantasy! And the cover work is beautiful!
Great Series.......1999-02-26
I read this series in third grade and I can still sit down and read it over and over. The six books are one of my treasured series that I will never get rid of, and it fueled many stories of my own!
