a sweet pastoral romance.......2006-03-15
"To Love and Cherish" is a lovely book - in the author's note, Gaffney says that she was using Thomas Hardy as a model and trying to capture a moment of rural prosperity and peace before the great upheavals of the industrial revolution. Both of these things really come through; the countryside, the changing of the seasons, the beauty of nature is so present, so lovingly described in the book that it's like a third major character, with Christy and Anne.
And it's a very sweet book, too. It would have to be - the hero, Christy, is a humble, intelligent, thoughtful, moral vicar. He's so lacking in guile and cynicism that he's almost simple, so honest and generous that he can be gullible.
Anne is, essentially - not as worldly as she thinks she is. She's lived an itinerant life, half-abandoned by an artist father who paid no attention to her and totally abandoned by a husband who really paid no attention to her. She's made do for herself and her bohemian upbringing has at least on the surface left her with a permissive, athiestic code of morals.
Much of the book takes place through Anne's diary entries (it switches between the diary and a straight omniscient narrative) and these are really beautiful - both Christy and Anne are amateur artists and so Anne's diary is vivid and colorful, with lovely allusions; it also sets a tone of keen self-reflection - she is brutally honest with herself, a little wry as well.
The novel is very character driven and the romance between Christy and Anne proceeds very slowly. Because Anne is married for much of the book, what you really read is the birth of a friendship; both of them finding, where they least expect it, a valuable and necessary companion. This slow, guarded approach, mixed with the lush and almost haunting description of the beauties of the countryside, gives the book a sort of dreamy and very idyllic feeling. It's like a song about a shephard and a shephardess, singing in the fields to one another - that kind of glittering pastoral innocence.
I'm not giving this book five stars for several reasons. I didn't really like Anne's conversion; it bothered me that while Christy is steady as a rock, the foundations of Anne's character shift a great deal over the course of the novel (the more superficial aspects of her personality remain intact). Second, I can believe that Anne will be happy in a little village, that she grew deeply invested in the people and activities that mark village life - but I was put off by the rejection of travel that comes at the end of the book. It sets up an either/or dichotomy that I found really disappointing. Finally, the last section of the book - which, unlike the rest, is full of typical-for-a-romance adventure and adrenaline - felt like a betrayal of the book that Gaffney had started out writing.
Refreshing, beautifully written story.......2004-09-09
This book was a delight to read because of Patricia Gaffney's beautiful prose and the unusual story line. The hero in this story, Christy, is a not a typical historical romance rakehell but, in fact, a vicar in a small town. The heroine, Anne (Lady D'Aubrey) is Christy's childhood best friend's unhappy, cynical wife. The characters are amazingly well drawn and sympathetic even in their faults. The friendship that develops between Anne and Christy and their eventual mutual (and, of course, forbidden!) attraction is very believable. I *loved* the character of Christy, a truly honorable and good man, full of good humor and optimism. What a refreshing change from the the usual angst-ridden libertine nobleman hero of most historical romances (actually the sequel to this book, "To Have and To Hold", features such a hero and is also an excellent, but much darker, book)!
Bravo to Patricia Gaffney! This book is a real treasure and the memorable characters will stay with you long after those from other books have faded into oblivion.
Sweet Love Story.......2004-05-26
This book is delightful, beguiling and well written.
The romance is between a vicar and his childhood friend's wife (not as sordid as it sounds)! It is a gentle, sweet story that stays with you long after you read it. The author draws you into the story with believable and well written main and secondary characters centered on the little village. It is a refreshing story, no game playing between hero and heroine, and no torrid characters that hate each other at first. Just a mesmerizing story and wonderful read. This book is one in a trilogy of the village of Wyckerly. The next book To Have and Hold is much darker and different than this one but also worth the read.
One of her best.......2003-04-04
This is the first book I read authored by Patricia Gaffney. A few years back, a sales woman at a used book store recommended this and the other two books in the Wyckerley triology. She is now one of my favorite authors. Although I like her most recent contemporary books, her older books, including this which are set in the past are her best in my opinion. They are better because in spite of the historical setting, the characters in her older books have current sensibilities and face timeless problems. Also, because they are set in a previous era, her older books don't have the pop culture references that make any contempory romance not just her books seem dated as soon as they are published.
To Love and Cherish is about Christy and Anne. This book is a world apart from other books of this genre. Ms. Gaffney authors with such a light touch and uses a gentle sense of humour that time is suspended while you are reading her books. How Christy reconciles his vocation with his love for Anne, a childhood friend's wife makes for a great plot--hard to put down. The suspense of "will they or won't they" holds up until the last page. You don't want to leave Wyckerly when this book is over and surprise! you don't have to! She has two other books set in this English town. Some of the characters you've met and some are new. So you can enjoy your stay in Wyckerly for a good long time.

Under His Spell
Spontaneous Combustion
Shelby Kane wasn't about to let her friend's bossy brother run off his family's ranch again! And Kingston Brannt kept a tight rein on his volcanic desires, but made it abundantly clear that he resented Shelby's sweetly distracting presence -- and the fiery passion she stirred in him. Although the ruggedly handsome, impossibly stubborn cowboy fought their explosive attraction at every turn, somehow his brooding, blustery ways made him even more irresistible to a starry-eyed Shelby. Now the jaded Texas bachelor was about to learn a mighty big lesson in love from the very woman he scorned!

Here you'll have a chance to forever document everything from your wedding vows, to you thoughts as you were coming down the isle, to your fears and joys...you name it! This is going to be a treasured family heirloom. I can't recommend it enough.
Wonderful gift!.......2001-08-07
There are so many wedding journals out there, but this first year of marriage journal is truely unique. Our wedding is about a year past, but I want to remember our special first year of marriage, also! This book is perfect for that. The guided questions examine things from details about your first home to writing a love letter to each other. It is dotted with scriptures related to love, also. I would recommend this book to any Christian couple.

Six years after their relationship ended, pro football star Cornell Robertson learns that Tracey Hamilton bore his twin sons. Now he wants her and his boys back in his life. What will Tracey choose?
Customer Reviews:
Good Read.......2007-03-20
I enjoyed this novel despite all the typos. I was hoping that Tracey and Cornell would work out their issues and get back together.
SOOOOOOO BORING.......2007-02-23
THIS IS A REPRINT WITH A DIFFERENT COVER!!!!!!!!
The excerpt on the back cover made the book seem exciting and interesting. That was definitely not the case when I started to turn the pages. The lead characters were extremely indecisive. Cornell Robertson suggested that his then girlfriend, Tracey Hamilton, have an abortion when she told him she was pregnant. Six years later when he saw her, he decided that he still wanted her. She rebuffed him and rather than tell his best friend why he was behaving differently, he became angry and constantly harped on not wanting to talk about it. Meanwhile, Tracey was doing the same thing to her lifelong friend Barbara. Tracey's next door neighbor Brice Carter was in love with her and had asked her to marry him, but the author left me wondering if she actually had a relationship with him or was he marrying her because he wanted to make her life a little easier.
There wasn't a page in the book without fragmented sentences or dashes. The author used dashes rather than complete the thoughts of the characters. Sometimes the thoughts were redirected two or three times within the same sentence with the use of dashes. I was beginning to believe she had come up with a new form of Morse Code. During dialogues it was often confusing, because multiple characters would be speaking and it was never clarified who was speaking when. There would be several sentences within quotes, side by side, on the same line sometimes changing the direction of thoughts or scenes.
After reading halfway through the book and realizing it wasn't going to get any better, I skipped to the last couple of chapters. The writing was so unreal that I couldn't believe this book was published. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED CLOSE TO THE ENDING, PLEASE STOP READING THIS NOW.
Tracey's son became sick with a fever and when she took him to the emergency room, she was told, "you have a very sick little boy." When she asked the doctor what was the matter he told her he didn't know. But she had better go find his father. Huh? Tracey then miraculously remembered that she had read somewhere that children can become almost deathly ill like that when a parent is absent. She figured she had better find Cornell fast, before she'd have two seriously ill children on her hands. These kids hadn't seen their father in six years and yet after knowing him for a very very very short time, the son became sick enough to be hospitalized. Rather than calling Cornell or sending his best friend to get him, Tracey had his best friend Bubba drive her to Chicago from Springfield so that she could find him. Tracey told Bubba "Let's go" in one sentence and in the very next sentence Bubba said, "His car is here." There was no description of where they were or how they got there. The reader was then told he wasn't at the apartment and must have been at the Boys Club coaching football. Tracey told Bubba to go ahead and leave she was going in to talk to Cornell (remember Cornell's car is still at his apartment). She went in a proceeded to watch him coach and daydream until he happened to turn around and notice her. If your child was at death's door wouldn't you keep a car there while you ran like a bat out of hell to get to the person you're looking for? I stopped reading the book for good at this point.
In the Author's Note at the back of the book, the author said her goal is to have several of her works adapted for movies or television. I hope she's able to finance it herself because it won't happen if the rest of her writing is as poorly done as this one. If I could have given this book less than 1 star, I would have.
Great Read.......2007-02-14
I enjoyed this book. I loved the male lead and how he was determined to go after what he wanted even though he may not have deserved it. I liked the kids too - they were sweet. The story/romance was a good one and kept my attention. As I thought the story was coming to a close, the author brought in another twist - which I could have taken or left. All in all a good read.
Another great read by Clark!!.......2000-11-06
I really enjoyed this book. It was a great read! Don't you just love "lost love romance," I do! Tracey and Cornell are great together. This book was filled with people making love connections! If you like this one, try Clark's previous work, you will enjoy that one too!
A Love To Cherish.......2000-04-07
I enjoyed this book for the mere fact that it involved the past relationship of college sweethearts and the choices they made. We often find ourselves making decisions based on the influences of our parents not knowing at the time what price we'll have to pay. Well Tracey Hamilton and Cornell Robertson experienced at first hand but now their sudden meeting after many years brings nothing but the test of true love. If you just enjoy stories dealing with these type of relationships, sacrifices, trying to be loyal to family and just love of the heart, this can be an interesting story to read. Some of my other favorites by Beverly Clark are: The Price of Love and Yesterday Is Gone.

Okay Read.......2007-08-15
Not one of her best, by far.
- Belle hides from father N law
- Casey Walker hired to find father n laws grandson (Belle's son)
- Father n law was a mean 'ole spiteful albeit rich man who hated Belle
- What the father N law told him about Belle was NOT what he learned on his own after "tricking" her to believing he's her friend.
- A lot of trust issues here. Got repetitive on more than one occasion.
Disappointing.......2005-02-16
I was so happy when this book was over. I'm a big fan of Connie Mason but this book was not one of her best reads it had potential but just didn't make it for me. I got so tired of the author mentioning belle's leg, okay we know it's "lame" as it was mention over and over again. Belle not trusting Casey was wearing me OUT. Get this one from a friend or the library.
deep historical romance.......2002-07-07
In 1876 Yuma Territorial Prison, Arizona Pinkerton Agent Casey Walker visits his brother Mark who was convicted of murder. Casey vows to get his sibling free, but needs money to hire the best lawyer available to properly defend Mark's self defense plea. Casey agrees to a deal with winery owner T.J. McAllister to bring his client's five-year-old grandson Tommy to him in exchange for three thousand dollars in advance.
T.J. informs Casey that his estranged son died on a cattle drive after marrying a whore Belle Parker. Though he ignored the existence of his grandson until now, he demands his heir be brought to him without the prostitute mother. Casey learns that Naomi of Naomi's Pleasure Palace has corresponded with Isabelle Henderson of Placerville, Oregon. Believing Henderson is Belle Casey heads north. Instead of a fallen woman, Casey finds Belle to be a good mother and a hardworking restaurant owner. He quickly respects and falls in love with her leading to a moral dilemma because what is best for his brother is not best for Belle or Tommy.
A LOVE TO CHERISH is a deep historical romance that contains a strong ethical quandary that leads readers to keep going until a resolution occurs though that denouement is too simplified for the honorable lead male protagonist. The action-packed story line enables the audience to see inside the gentle yet protective Belle and caring decent Casey. Though the outcome is too easily facilitated for such a complex morality tale, fans of Americana romance will want to read Connie Mason's well-written cerebral tale.

She was only seventeen years old . . . and terribly alone. Running deep into the Kentucky wilderness from the low-down family that dared to sell her, Cherish Riley knew that her enemies were relentlessly tracking her, and that she risked all the dangers an untamed land had to offer. She never dreamed that a tall, lean, buckskin-clad man with a large brown dog would offer his protection--and that within hours he would propose marriage! Sloan Carroll had no doubt that Cherish would make the prettiest little wife in the territory, but he was even more sure that she could give his motherless child the warmth and love she so desperately needed. He couldn't understand the hurt look on Cherish's face when he made his offer. And he still had to learn that to win a woman's heart, he had to lose his own.
Customer Reviews:
Great but not long on plot..........2006-09-14
Charming fast read. Not Mrs. Garlock's best but not bad. I like the time period just wish the book had a little more substance.
a little too simple.......2006-08-08
I agreed pretty much with all the posts for this story. Cherish was sweet, a little too sweet and innocent. I mean you'd think she would have gained some gumption from all the crazy people she was stuck with before Sloan found her and did the requisite hero rescue. I think the best parts of the story are the side characters, Pierre and Katherine, the two old guys that live with Sloan and John Spotted Elk and his sister. Over all it is a decent story, but not the best.
BETTER THAN YOU THINK!.......2002-08-08
Cherish Riley is displaced from her Virginian home and lost and alone with some crude grunts. She is waiting for the return of her brother but the crud wants to trade her off to some weasels.
She takes off to try and disappear into the forests along the Kentucky river. Mind you, this is Daniel Boone's time in history.
Terror, fear and exhustion dog her footsteps until she is rescued by a bear of a man and his unapproachable dog, Brown. [grin] Blink yourself into her time and see how you would fare. Traveling in October with no real warm clothing had to be a trial in itself. Sloan did his best to provide for Cherish.
Sloan Carroll is looking to pick up a wife to take home to his homestead to take care of his brother's child. Cherish is an angelic answer to his problem and he determines to return home sooner than expected. And he intends to keep his heart intact. No falling in love and giving any woman emotional power over him.
Except for those blasted Hurons slowing him down. The Frenchie, Pierre is one lovable character and puts Cherish at ease. It's not easy being seventeen in a land of men, and one needs a man's protection.
I could feel the freezing cold and exhustion of the characters as they arived home needing the help of Juice and True to make it inside. These two men turn out to be true friends.
The advent of Ada coming for her baby, Orah Delle and stalking Sloan was a bit wicked. And then the doubts raised by Minnie Dove and her pursuit of Sloan and the friendship of John Spotted Elk began to round out Cherish's life in the small community.
I don't see how she got over the visual extermination of the river rats so quickly - [I would still be having nightmares]but Cherish had the support of so many friends. I hope John Spotted Elk gets a story and a woman of his own.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [if you can get in tune with the times.] I couldn't put it down and to me that makes an excellent story.
Charming.......2002-02-13
This is a charming little story, with a little of the hardships of the time. No, this is not Ms. Garlock's best... and no, there is not quite enough emotional conflict to carry the story for the 343 pages. However, it is a sweet story. If you're looking for a simple story without too much conflict, this is it!
Cherish spends the entire book letting Sloan determine the route of the relationship, and giving into his every whim. Unlike most of Ms. Garlock female characters, Cherish is quite dependent on Sloan. Otherwise, it's a good story.
(yawn).......2001-06-18
Dorthy Garlock's Love and Cherish has an insipid meandering excuse for a plot. She drudges along a well worn path through historical romanance: the lovely but tiny young maid falls in love with the huge life-harden man and in turn wins his heart. I love a good roamance with a happy ending, but this is entirely too predictable. The dialogue is so honeyed, it is laughable. If this book is publishable, we should all give writing a book a try!
