Yet another book on management-this time a naval perspective! Despite the criticism of such books in the research article by Dr Peter Teiman,"The many varieties of management",I have to admit that this book has a lot of practical value.

It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy.......2007-09-04
I thought this was a very well written book, considering that it was highlighting management techniques. Those types of books are ususally very boring, prop your eyelids open type of books. Michael Abrashoff explained his style of management in a manner which would make it interesting to a broad range of readers and it is told as a well written story should be.

Engaging, Insightful, Inspiring.......2007-08-31
I really enjoyed this book---Abrashoff does an excellent job of weaving his Navy story with practical business insights, without going overboard on the analogies, if you'll excuse the nautical pun.
What I appreciate about the author is that he turned the Navy culture upside down by seeking input from everyone on his ship (slightly over 300), insisting on being told when people disagreed with him, and `mixing with the masses' at lunch and in other contexts.
Note: below I touch on excerpts from the book, so if you don't want a "spoiler" review, then you may wish to stop reading.
"Look For Results, Not Salutes" was the name of one of his chapters, and encapsulates much of his guiding philosophy.
Abrashoff understands the importance of getting in other people's shoes. He motivated his crew to attain cross-training expertise (which would greatly improve the ship's battle readiness and abilities) by noting that for those under 21, getting the expertise would enable them to have later curfews time to more thoroughly enjoy ports of call when they were abroad.
One of my favorite stories came when a four-star Marine General, Anthony Zinni, toured the ship and Abrashoff picked Fireman Joseph Cotton, 20, not only to receive a special pin marking his expertise, but also to give Zinni a tour of the ship.
"Zinni was stunned that I would give up my face-time and let an enlisted man escort a four-star. That this poised 20-year-old neither choked nor forgot his lines, and that his knowledge of the ship was quite sophisticated, shocked the general, but pleased him enormously. It was a grand slam."
That night, Zinni tore up his prepared speech at the Navy's birthday ball and talked about leadership on the Benfold, "specifically how we empowered our young sailors to assume major responsibilities."
Abrashoff talks about the impact of praising sailors--describing the encounters as highlights of his day that built up trust and morale--and "they didn't cost me or the navy a dime."
Abrashoff mixes good examples with bad examples, and isn't above noting where he slipped up or let his ego get in the way on his career journey.
He stresses the importance of doling out praise in person. E-mail and other forms of communication fall short of the mark. Abrashoff told the story of his sister's boss at a major bank. He sent an e-mail congratulating and thanking one of her assistants for a job well done. "That very afternoon, he rode the elevator with her and didn't even acknowledge her existence. It completely wiped out any good his e-mail could have done," Abrashoff wrote.
Another tale also spoke volumes about the importance of being authentic, and not simply going through the motions of authenticity:
Abrashoff found out the names and birthdays of sailors' spouses, and sent a card to each one. It sparked goodwill, with many sailors letting him know how much the gesture touched their families.
Another ship tried to mimic the approach but bungled it because they sent all the cards on the same day (bureaucrats who had not been empowered to think outside the confines of directives).
I zipped through this book in less than a week---it's easy reading, engaging reading, and enlightening reading.
Good lessons for government managers.......2007-08-23
Working for a government agency with many former military managers, I found Abrashoff's professional tearing down of the command and control model from within the Navy quite refreshing. Nothing is more tiresome than leadership by intimidation. The effectiveness of true inspiration and earned respect in an adapted leadership model is readily apparent from Abrashoff's experience.

Great Gift Idea.......2007-07-18
I bought this as a birthday gift for my six year old son. He couldn't have been happier. Just to show you how interesting it is, I kept it in my office at work so he wouldn't find it before his birthday. I can't tell you the number of people who stopped to read the book and told me how interesting it was. I even had people who asked me for ordering information on the book so they could get it for their children. This book is inexpensive and a great read for all ages. All the little pockets, fold outs, letters and maps are a great touch. The compass on the front is a great eye catcher.
Trim the Sails and Engage Imagination Drive.......2007-06-25
Technically, this is a fictional work; however, I feel more comfortable lumping it in with the family of pre-teen picture books that cover the history of pirates during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a period more commonly referred to as the Golden Age of Piracy. The author uses the story of a fictional pirate hunter chasing an equally fictional female pirate to provide a framework on which to hang tidbits of pirate history.
Like the Eyewitness, Discovery and Kingfisher family of youth picture books, this one is crowded with illustrations and brief passages of historical prose that provide a basic background on piracy suitable for children and those with limited attention spans. There the comparison stops, Pirateology goes well beyond by providing an interactive element with the numerous foldouts, mock notebooks, sealed envelopes with inserted maps and notes, and variety of other interactive items sure to keep the reader engaged.
The prose is not difficult, but does include enough vocabulary to stretch young minds. The artwork varies from a vintage sepia look to colorful original artwork. The overall presentation is excellent and looks reasonably durable. I would recommend that use of the book by those under 9 years of age be supervised to preserve the various ties and foldouts as well as to prevent misplacing the inserts and notes. Bottom line is that this is a fun introduction to the history of piracy during the Golden Age. For those beyond the level of such a children's book I might suggest the various Osprey books on buccaneers and pirates by Angus Konstam.

The coolest book ever for kids.......2007-05-09
I got this for my 7 year old nephew for Christmas last year...and it was really hard for me to wrap it and not open it to play with all of the neat things on each page. There are pirate maps, gold, "old letters" to untie and unravel. What fun for a pirate loving child!!! (or grown up for that matter). by the way...he loved it :)

A Must for Leadership.......2004-06-04
This is perhaps one of the most important books I have read as a coach. It was very concise and offered excellent suggestions. It was written to I could relate and the players will be able to relate. I am going to implement this book as a preseason tool to better develop leaders and team chemistry. This book will be very thought provoking and bring alot of things out that normally wouldnt have been thought of.
The step by step process is excellent and really makes alot of sense. Jeff Janssen did a great job with it, I just wish it wasnt so expensive...
My leadership guideline!.......2004-04-29
I know how important leadership is to the success of any group and yet I didn't have a methodical, clear and consise way of teaching the players/leaders on my team what it takes and what it means to be a leader. I used this book extensively this past year and it is the first time that I felt our team leaders had the information they needed to be effective....and they were! Jeff's book will be used by my program as long as I'm a coach.

George and Harold had a teacher named Ms. Ribble and they thought she was the meanest teacher. There teacher was going to retire at the end of the school year so she made her class make retirement cards for her. George and Hareld didn't want to make the card she told everyone to write so Gorge and Hareld made a comic book for her.They named the comic book Caption underpants and the wrath of the wicked wedgie woman. There teacher didn't like it that George and Harold made her a comic book and not what she told them to do. Ms. Ribble changed their grades to F's and G's. So that afternoon George and Hareld went to their tree house and got the hip no-ring that they used on their principal to make him into Captain Underpains when you snapped your fingers. The next day George and Harold hypnotized Ms. Ribble saying you will change our grades back to normal, and you won't turn into wedgie woman. the thing George and Harold didn't know was that when you hypnotized a woman they did the opposite of what you tolled them to do. then over night Ms. Ribble turned into the wicked wedgie woman. what will George and Hareld do now, will Captain Underpants save ten day? I thought that the book was a easy and good book to read. It had allot of action and I all ways wanted to know what would happen next.

I really liked Captain Underpants! The best thing about it was the great adventures. I also liked the Flip-o-Rama. The pictures were all lined up perfectly. And finally I liked the jokes, all of them were really funny, even to my parents!

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

We are huge fans of Captain Underpants! "Tra-La-Laaaaa!". We have set one and I purchased this one as an early Christmas Present. Yes, it's still in hiding. We have read all these books before via library though. They are a hoot! My 7 year old son(he reads on a 5th grade level) and I read them to my 5 year old daughter. We all giggle! We love the adult characters' names: Ms.Ribble, Miss Anthrope, Mr. Rected to name a few. How clever! If you want a fun, silly read this is a must buy for you and your family. I call them my guilty pleasure. Enjoy!

I have a seven year old son that will take his books anywhere! This time last year as he was entering the 1st grade, it was a task to get him to read. He would be frustrated and so would I. I ordered all of those books that we get from the other companies and he was just beyond that. It was not fun to him and we happened to be in a book store and he started looking at this book. He told me that someone had it in school. He has been hooked every since, and he understands the story line. It is also not one of those books that you think is for children and has adult undertone, it is just as goofy as he is and he loves it and I love it for him!!!

I purchased this series for my eight year old son and he loved them!
There is something about boys and "potty" humor that I will never understand, but these stories hold his attention and he is reading!
The language is innocent, not more grown up then I want him to be at eight and I think that the illustrations help the stories along for my son.
He loves them and I would tell any parent trying to find something their boys would read to try these books!

This is NOT classic literature, but my 6 and 8 year old little boys are more excited about reading than ever! They raced to see who could finish first. The younger one begged me to read to him so he could catch up to the older one who was reading on his own. If you are having a hard time getting little boys interested in books, this will help. You just need to get pasted the "potty humor."

My son LOVES these stories! He is 8. I introduced him to Captain Underpants last year and he reads and re-reads them, all on his own. Any books that can stand up to Game Cube and Xbox is a winner in my veiw! the stories are funny and interesting, I have read them all myself and though occasionally the comic books mis-spelled words really get to me (I mean my kid keeps wondering what these words are since they are not spelled the way he thinks they should be (the right way)) but that's a small point really. His friends also enjoy Captain Underpants a lot.
It's a good way to get them to practice reading and to show that there is more to fun than video games.

Captain John Smith did an amazing amount of living in the fifty-one years he lived on Earth. His life's journey began in 1580 at Willoughy, England. He left home at 16 after his father's death to become a soldier fighting in France for Dutch Independence from Spain. In other words, he was a mercenary. He went to work in the Mediterranean Sea on a merchant ship in 1598. In 1600 he went to the Austrians to fight in Hungary against the Turks and fought so valiantly that he was promoted to Captain. Fighting in Transylvania in 1602, he was wounded, captured, and sold as a slave to a Turk. He was then given to a girl who sent him to her brother to get training for Imperial service. Being very ill treated by this Pasha, Smith killed him and escaped. He fled through Russia and then Poland, was released from service, received a large reward and spent time traveling throughout Europe. During the winter of 1604-05 he returned to England. All this before the events we know him for began in Virginia and New England!
His restless nature somehow got him involved with the plans to colonize the Virginia territory for profit. King James I granted the charter and the expedition set sail on December 20, 1606. While this is more than a century after Columbus, it was still a huge and costly undertaking to what was almost unknown territory. The three tiny ships were the Discovery (20 tons), Susan Constant (120 tons), and Godspeed (40 tons). They did not land in Virginia until April 1607 after a voyage of more than four months. Smith was on the list of seven council members that was designated to govern the colony. The winter was harsh, fresh water was hard to come by, sickness ravaged the colonists, and the local Indians, ruled by Powhatan (Wahunsonacock), were antagonistic to the newcomers. Smith became the leader and led the fight against the Indian raids and negotiating with them for food enough to supplement their meager stores.
In December of 1607, the famous incident of Smith being taken to Powhatan and being saved by Pocahontas occurred. Like much in Smith's writings, it is hard to separate the braggadocio from the fact. Apparently there was some kind of ceremony that involved a ritual death and renewal of life whereby Smith became some kind of subordinate chief member of the tribe. Smith may not have understood the ceremony well and indeed may well have believed that the 11 year old princess saved his life.
Life was very hard at Jamestown and dissent grew. Smith was elected President in September 1608 and has the fort reinforced and emphasizes military training among the colonists. During the winter, Powhatan refused to provide food because he believes that the colonists are not there to trade but to take Indian lands. After difficult negotiations they trade swords and guns for food. Things continue to be difficult and now the resentment focuses on Smith. He is badly burned when his powder keg caught fire. A group leading colonists deposes Smith and he sails back to England part in resentment and part for treatment of his injuries in October.
He is active in promoting colonization of the new territories and heads back in 1614, but he cannot go to Virginia. He focuses on the area north that he called New England. Smith traveled to many areas there and in 1615 founded a colony in Maine. He is captured by a French privateer and is unable to return to England until December. In 1622, Indians kill more than 300 colonists. Smith's offer to lead the military fight against the natives is rejected.
During these years in England, Smith published some works to provide him some much needed income. He finds the right stories to tell and several of his writings sold quite well. He died in 1631 at 51 years old and was buried at St. Sepulchres in the City of London.
This summary of his life is there merest outline of events. There is much much more covered in this treasure trove of a book.
The wonderful Library of America provides us with Smith's "A True Relation", "The Proceedings of the English Colony in Virginia" (parts written by a variety of folks), "A Description of New England", "New Englands Trials" [sic], "The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles", "The True Travels", and his "Advertisements for the Unexperienced Planters of New-England". The words in these titles such as "trials" and "advertisements" had a much different meaning four hundred years ago. The point was that by 1620 thousands of people were risking their lives to try to settle in Virginia and New England and they wanted information. Smith gave them good information about what they were going to face. Oh, he certainly boasted and gave himself credit for things that others did, but his descriptions of what it takes to survive there are quite good.
This volume does not contain Smith's two books on sea travel. However, it does contain an additional four hundred pages of writings by others about the settling of Virginia. One covers the settlement of Roanoke before the Jamestown voyage. Others are written independently of Smith, at least one was written in response to his "Generall Historie" that upset some who felt he took to himself their deeds. They are all fascinating.
There are also pages of black and white plates showing aspects of Smith's life and other aspects of the early settlement including etchings of Smith and even of Pocahontas (Lady Rebecca) in her English finery during her one, fatal, year in England. There is another set of plates that are in color and show Indian life at the time of the events of this book. We get many useful maps, and index, notes on the text, notes on the plates, and a chronology of Smith's life.
This is a rich text that provides important history of early American settlement that everyone interested in the founding and history of our nation will want to read and know. The early events with the Indians are fascinating as are the descriptions of the trade and battles. Even the variety of spellings are fascinating. Yes, orthography was not standardized, but it is interesting how the same words are spelled differently even within the same writing let alone between authors.
A must have for all who appreciate American history.

This text is great and the CD-ROM which lets u take and review practice tests may even better. I was surprised at the effectiveness of the text. All the material was presented in sufficient detail to answer your questions, but no not so detailed as to be burdensome as a college degree. The end result for me was a perfect score on all four sections of the test, but I took a LOT of practice tests. YOU NEED THIS BOOK & CD!
Get Your Captain's License, Third Edition.......2005-10-09
This new 3rd edition is better than the fist two. It is not a complete guide to all you need to learn to test for a USCG License, but it is a good base. There are still a few corrections needed in the rules that should have been updated for this 3rd edition and not all the study text agrees with the USCG questions. The CD tests is okay for review and gives a good feel of what needs to be studiedfor the USCG exams. Over all makes a great referance and should help anyone looking for a lower level license.
Get Your Captain's License Ed. 3.......2004-10-15
I received this volume in the mail about two weeks ago and have been hard at work using it to prepare for my exam. While not yet licensed, I have boated and sailed much of my life and am familiar with most of the material in it already.
The new edition is quite thorough. It not only presents all the questions, but has substantial guides preceding each section to help you understand the principles, which I find to be the most helpful feature of all. The volume's only weakness is it is written in a very dry, technical manner making it somewhat laborious to read. Also, if you are not already familiar with some of the concepts, you need to read more basic, outside resources to prepare you to study them in this book, otherwise it will leave you behind. However, if you are not familiar with the material in this text, you probably should not be applying for licensure yet either.
Finally, the new version of the software is very good. It still does not offer to test on the navigation problems. The author correctly states it cannot do this because one cannot plot with compass and parallel ruler from charts on a computer screen. However, I wish the software offered the tests anyway so that I could at least put my answers down and have it confirm them. It would just be more convenient for practicing.

A Good Start.......2003-01-08
No single text is going to allow you to ace the test, but this should be one of the ones you use. This is the second edition and supposedly updated as of 2000. While much of the information is available on the Coast Guard web site, Wing does a good job of "packaging it" to make it much more readable. I found the light and signal summaries worth the price of the book. Without these two summaries, memorization of the many, many lights and signals would be much harder. Another plus is a "plain english" version as well as the original rules - much more readable and easier to learn.

I read a lot of reviews before I bought HIS MAJESTY'S DRAGON and almost all of them got around to making the same two points: the story is fantastic, the writing is fairly flat. Lo and behold, now that I have read the book I have to say that all those reviews were on-target. It is totally delightful to read about dragons in the Napoleonic Wars, and bizarrely fitting: of course the same people that charge into battle on horses, or frail wooden ships, would be at home on flying beasts. The details are wonderfully worked out, the blend of historical research and imagination is hard to read without real relish.
Novik maintains a steady level of tension throughout the book. The story doesn't really build to a climax and then resolve; but there are no dull passages, and no saggy middle. Her characters are a little wooden and Laurence, in particular, is so painfully noble that even if he were more vividly drawn he would still be fairly one-dimensional.
I might read more of this series, and I'm sure that I'd enjoy it. But I can't imagine feeling very passionate about it, given what I know of the first installment.
Well-imagined combination of history, fantasy, and manners.......2007-09-23
I was a little hesitant about the Novik novels at first, never having been a dragon fiction fan and not being able to recall what was the last grown-up fantasy novel I read, unless you count "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" as fantasy fiction. Still, I knew that Novik was partly inspired by the works of Patrick O'Brian and Jane Austen, weighty names that lent some worth to her reputation. By the middle of the first novel, the well wrought combination of dragons, Napoleonic wars, and Regency propriety sealed Novik's reputation for me. And it's a good one.
The best thing about the series is the friendship between a Jack-Aubrey-styled hero, Will Laurence, and the Chinese-by-nature and British-by-nurture Imperial dragon, Temeraire, named for a French ship captured by the English at the Battle of Lagos in 1759. (Temeraire's egg was taken from a French ship that Laurence had won.) I was completely won over by Temeraire, who is curious, polite, brave, eager for knowledge and action, and harbors revolutionary inclinations. He and Will make a brilliant team as they endure danger and triumph during their battles against the French.
A fine beginning........2007-09-17
Naomi Novik, His Majesty's Dragon (Del Rey, 2006)
It took me almost a year after I first started hearing about Naomi Novik's Temeraire Trilogy to actually get round to reading the first book in the series, and I regret that. This is some fine stuff right here. Novik has reimagined the world as it was in Napoleon's time, creating an alternate universe where only one thing is changed: the existence of dragons. This is an entry in the martial-fantasy subgenre, where the emphasis is off swords and sorcery and is more on military tactics and the like (viz. Elizabeth Moon's The Deed of Paksenarrion or Steven Erikson's Malazan books), but Novik goes one deeper, spending a good deal of time examining the mores and customs of the time, and figuring out how the existence of dragons might affect those (as well as the obvious effect on the military). The result is a quite stunning period piece. Oddly, though, what it most reminds me of is Joan Aiken's The Stolen Lake, but without Aiken's sense of whimsy.
Temeraire is a dragon, still unhatched when the book begins. Navy captain Will Laurence gets the egg as part of the bounty after capturing a French warship, and after the dragon hatches, it befriends Laurence, and the two of them set off on a grand adventure in the Napoleonic wars.
The book's been called by more than one reviewer "Patrick O'Brian with dragons." I, embarrassingly, have not yet read O'Brien, but if he's this much fun, I'll start as soon as I can. Novik's martial writing is on a par with Erikson's, if not on the same epic plateau, while her examination of customs and mores has a nice subtlety to it. A fine book, this, and I'm much looking forward to the rest of the series. ****

According to the review, all this book is is a copy of Eragon with a little British theme thrown in. Even the staling of the egg mirrors Eragon. I would never buy this book, ever. Anybody who is reading this, definitly spend the extra $10.00 for Eragon. It is way better.
What a page-turner!.......2007-08-31
This is one of the most enjoyable books I've read in the past five years. I loved how Will Laurence changed in a wholly believable manner from the prototypical stiff, formal Regency hero into a core member of Britain's new Aerial Force. I loved how the dragon Temeraire develops from an infant, albeit a sentient infant with language, to an adult. I loved the culture of the Aerial Corps, and how it differed so intensely from the rest of society (just as the precursor of the RAF did from the rest of the British military).
I'm not even fond of dragon stories, fantasies, or Regency fiction, but this was superb! I haven't had that much fun reading in a very long time!
