4 out of 5 stars Lady's Choice.......2007-01-07

On Lady Adela Macleod's wedding day, she is standing beside her bridegroom Ardelve when four horseman burst upon the ceremony. One of the masked villains grabs Adela and swiftly rides off with her.

One of Adela's sisters, Lady Sorcha, is convinced that Sir Hugo Robinson has kidnaped Adela. She believes that Adela and Hugo want to be together. Sorcha arrives at Hugo's home intent on seeing her sister but discovers that Hugo has not captured Adela. Sorcha is furious with Hugo because she thinks he lead Adela to believe that he cared for her. Hugo denies the allegations and is angry at being accused of such treachery.

Sorcha sets off with her sister Sidony to find Adela only to have Hugo easily track her down. Together they set off to find Adela. Along their journey, Hugo finds himself very attracted to Sorcha, but he has given his word to marry Adela to save her reputation. Sorcha is becoming increasingly less eager to see her sister marry Hugo as her feelings grow for him.

As the danger and mystery grow surrounding Adela's kidnaping, Sorcha and Hugo will have to put their feelings aside to save Adela and the treasure her captor truly seeks.

Lady's Choice is a good story. I enjoyed watching Sorcha's and Hugo's relationship progress. I like Sorcha's fiery personality and I found Hugo to be very charming. Adela's feelings toward her captor are intriguing as well. The story moves along slowly though. There tends to be more dialog than action. Therefore I found myself often eager for things to just move along. However, Lady's Choice has an intriguing plot with some great characters.

3 out of 5 stars A Fair Historical Read.......2006-11-26

Lady Sorcha Macleod is attending her sister's wedding when the bride is abducted by a masked rider. She believes it is Sir Hugo Robison a Scottish Knight Templar who she believes is smitten with her sister who has taken her for himself. She along with everyone else is stunned when Hugo does arrive and it is understood he did not take the bride. Now together Sorcha and Hugo race to rescue Adela. The forced intimacy of their rescue attempt makes Hugo very aware of the spirit and beauty of Sorcha. He should be with the one sister but he wants Sorcha. Neither one of them realize that they are pawns in a much bigger plot and eventually they will have to face the passion that burns between them.

Ms. Scott's story has a great deal of potential and will probably satisfy long time fans that have started this series at the beginning. As a stand alone effort this is a bit shaky although it still entertains. Sorcha and Hugo are fair protagonists and their adventure includes Sidony and Sir Michael making this a family affair. Ms. Scott has filled the pages with wonderful historic details which adds to the story telling. Scotland will jump off the pages for the reader. Sorcha is a strong heroine and really came alive on the pages. Hugo is truly a wonderful knight. The secondary storyline of Adela with her captor at times threatened to overrun the romance making it a bit heavy at times. Still this was a fine historical romance. For CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

4 out of 5 stars A Good Historical Romance!.......2006-10-05

Adela has dutifully agreed to an arranged marriage with Baron Ardelve, a man twice her age. Just before taking her vows, the ceremony is disrupted by the thundering hooves of intruders on horses. As a masked bandit boldly sweeps up Adela, her family believes Sir Hugo Robison has had the audacity to take her for his own.

Adela's sister, Sorcha, hopes to find the couple at the inauguration of Ranald of the Isles, head of the MacDonald Clan. Sorcha's fiery temper gets the best of her when the truth is revealed that Adela has indeed been abducted, when she attacks Sir Hugo for encouraging her to think he cared for her sister.

When the evil man's plan is revealed to use Adela as a pawn to steal the fabled Templar Treasure, Sorcha takes it upon herself to save her sister and disappears into the highlands.

Sir Hugo must find Sorcha and Adela before the treacherous plot unfolds. In hot pursuit he discovers that Sorcha's passionate nature is irresistible as he finds himself captivated even though he has bound himself in honor to marry Adela.

Amanda's ability to write ongoing family saga's relating to some of her most beloved characters is just one of the appealing reasons why she is well read. I am looking forward to her next book, Knight's Treasure.

Armchair Interviews says: Amanda Scott has written another satisfying romance to complement her collection of intriguing romance novels.

3 out of 5 stars It was an okay read.......2006-10-05

The main character Sorcha (pronounced SOHR-uh, like Sarah) drove me nuts. Her immature and irresponsible behavior made me want to take her over my knee, which the hero Hugo threatened (but never did unfortunately). Her reckless behavior started the whole drama of the story (a crucial point), but her character never seemed to just grow up. Sorcha continued on with her rash actions, and she did not take into account the consequences of those actions on others and herself. The relationship between Sorcha and Hugo is completely implausible and it never based itself on a solid foundation.

Though I found the historical research woven fully through the story, I found the characters lacking... if you don't have anything better to read then this will do.

LADY'S CHOICE by Amanda Scott
August 26, 2006

Amazon rating 4/5

"This continues a series by Amanda Scott in 1300s Scotland, following the Macleod family. Lady's Choice, focuses on the second to youngest daughter, Lady Sorcha Macleod. Her older sister Adela has just been kidnapped by a man unknown to them during her wedding. While at first everyone believes the mystery man to be Hugo Robinson - the man Sorcha has been telling everyone is Adela's true love - wedding guests soon learn that the kidnapper is unknown to them. When Hugo appears after the wedding ceremony, with no knowledge of Adela, Sorcha is blamed for the kidnapping, since she attempted to get Hugo and Adela together, assuming they were in love. Her father is angry, and Sorcha decides to take it upon herself to rescue her sister.

Thus begins an adventure that involves Sorcha, her youngest sister Sidony, and eventually Sir Michael (married to pregnant sister Lady Isobel) and Hugo and their men, as they try to rescue Adela from Michael and Hugo's evil cousin Waldron. The story goes back and forth between Sorcha's adventures - including her budding romance with Hugo - and scenes that focus on Adela and her captor. What ensues with Adela and Waldron is very interesting, as she is conflicted, almost coming to a point where she subconsciously cares for him, thus confusing her rescuers. Has Adela decided to take Waldron's side, or is she merely bluffing and biding her time till Hugo and Sorcha rescue her?" -- Complete review at Bookloons - M. Lofton

Another epic read, LADY'S CHOICE continues the stories of the MacLeod sisters, and tells the tale of Sorcha and Hugo. There is one more novel in this series, which I am hoping to read when it is published. The author does a good job with her historical research and the reader will get a good feel of what it might have been like living back in the 1300's in old Scotland. Those who enjoy adventure with their romances, LADY'S CHOICE is the book to read.

The title of this carefully measured biography of First Lady Laura Bush can have an ironic double-meaning depending on which side of the political/sexual liberation divide one finds themselves. Compared with the driven Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton (predecessors whose level of public acceptance often seemed to vary in inverse proportion to their ambitions for themselves and their husbands), the former Laura Welch of Midland, Texas can often seem like a cipher. But the causes (education and literacy) she has quietly espoused from her White House pulpit have indeed been the driving passions of her life since her days as an SMU coed. Given the hyper-polarizing presidency of George W. Bush, veteran Washington Post Style writer Ann Gerhard is careful to walk a fine line between fact and wildly divergent public opinion--a task made even more challenging by her subject's natural reticence and aversion to overweening self-analysis. But neither does Gerhard shy away from personal tragedies (the death of a high school classmate caused by Laura running a stop sign) or her husband's snowballing controversies (alcohol, Harken, Air National Guard duty gap, economic and social policies, 9/11, Iraq) and the public foibles of their twin daughters. Gerhard portrays Laura as a woman of typical West Texas manners and reserve, yet one steely enough not to sacrifice her longstanding social concerns or sense of self amidst a modern political dynasty. In that sense she may well be her husband's better half. --Jerry McCulley

Book Description

The intimate and critically acclaimed biography of the much-admired First Lady -- now in paperback with a new post-election Afterword by the author -- The Perfect Wife tells the complete story of Laura Welch Bush. From Mrs. Bush's upbringing in West Texas to her whirlwind romance with George W. Bush to the Governor's mansion to her roles as mother, Bush family member, First Lady, and savvy political campaigner, Gerhart reveals her as never before.

Download Description

"Laura Bush is arguably the most popular figure in the Bush White House. Even the President's detractors would not hesitate to describe the First Lady as utterly sincere and devoted to family and country, whether she is advocating on behalf of education and libraries or comforting the nation in times of crisis. Ann Gerhart of The Washington Post has covered Mrs. Bush since 2001, and no other reporter has interviewed the First Lady more often. Through this unparalleled access Gerhart has been able to uncover the woman behind the carefully maintained image. Far more than an uncomplicated maternal figure and dedicated wife, Laura Bush emerges as a complex and fascinating woman in her own right, who has composed a life of accomplishment for herself alongside her husband's tremendous ambitions. The Perfect Wife tells the complete story from Mrs. Bush's upbringing to her whirlwind three-month courtship by George W. Bush and her role as a mother, wife, and public figure. An only child raised in a segregated and fiercely traditional West Texas town, she is less conservative than her husband and appealingly down-to-earth despite the extraordinary privileges of her position. Two tragedies have defined her: a car accident when she was seventeen and September 11, when she suddenly had to transform her job and take herself far more seriously. Ann Gerhart examines the First Lady's influences and motivations, reveals the depths to which her husband relies upon her, and assesses her achievements. Compelling and insightful, this is the first comprehensive account of a woman who has won the admiration of the nation and of the compromises and challenges that come with taking on the most examined volunteer job in the world."

3 out of 5 stars Who is she? Author tries to answer this question.......2006-04-13

At the end of this book, despite having interviewed plenty of people for it, this reader still doesn't really know who Laura Bush is. She comes off as very private, and seems to be doing a noteworthy job of her quasi-job - "First Lady", which we learns is a term she does not care for in the least.

The author takes a few pot shots at President Bush ~ such as saying that the President has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and Mrs. Bush has one with reading. She paints them as polar opposites, and I got the sense that the author was constantly shaking her head at what possessed Mrs. Bush to marry Mr. Bush. She also tries to suggest that Mrs. Bush is farther to the left than she would like to let on, but I don't necessarily buy that.

Ms. Gerhart takes a chapter and dedicates it to the Bush daughters, and to their parents' parenting style, which suggests that the girls were brought up spoiled. She seems to nitpick every comment Mrs. Bush has ever publicly made about the girls, and this reader got the feeling that the author was shaking her head over the Bush girls' antics.

Overall I didn't come away learning anything important about Laura Bush. Maybe someday she'll write her own story, in her own words. It would be fitting considering her fervor for the literary arts, and quite probably it would be without the sniping that the author sneaks in every few pages.

5 out of 5 stars Less Than Meets the Eye.......2005-08-04

I'll admit up front that I am not a George W. Bush fan (does an American exist who does not have a strong opinion of him one way or the other?). But I thought there must be a deeper, more complex Laura Bush.

Ann Gerhart's book is well written and I could not stop reading it once I started. There are lots of interesting tidbits (Laura Bush smokes cigarettes, but never in public) and revealing anecdotes and interviews. The chapter on the twins is ruthless. In another chapter, Gerhart describes in detail the tragic car accident that Laura Bush caused when she was seventeen, and what a traumatic experience it was for all concerned.

So how does a woman who voted for Eugene McCarthy, who hangs out with liberal friends, and who loves her work, meet a guy who is running for congress on a Republican ticket and marry him six weeks later, giving up forever a career she has wanted since she was in second grade? I was certain that there was more to Laura Bush than meets the eye. After reading The Perfect Wife, I am convinced that there is less.

Maybe she couldn't bear the thought of staying single into her thirties. I don't doubt that she loves George and that he loves her. It is obvious what George gets out of the deal. Less obvious is what Laura gets. One (male) interviewee suggested to Gerhart that George was irresistibly handsome and sexy. Please.

There is little evidence that Laura Bush is an introspective person. She reads a lot, but seems to be as shallow as her husband. If she ever does evaluate her life and her decisions, I wonder how she will come to grips with having left the desperately important job of teaching at-risk children to raise a pair of self-centered and inconsiderate daughters. And with having supported a man who is dismantling the most important social programs this nation has. Will she ever speak out?

Gerhart leaves a lot of questions unanswered, but by the time you finish The Perfect Wife, you will have enough information to form your own opinion about Laura Bush.

3 out of 5 stars A woman with a very different outlook from my own.......2005-06-14

I read this book in October 2004 - an interesting time to be reading such a book, during the latter weeks of the US presidential campaign with Bush seeking a second term as president. The book dragged in places, the earlier and latter chapters being the more interesting. The writer seems sympathetic to Laura Bush - hence it is almost a shock to read the chapter on their twin daughters which is not at all sympathetic to them, and critical of the parenting they have received, such a contrast to the tone of the rest of the book (and perhaps also something of a relief?). A woman who says (and seems to believe) that supporting her husband is the most important part of her job, "whether my husband is president or not", and who gave up her own career as soon as she married him (after knowing him for just 12 weeks), a woman who has been able to refrain from voicing any of her own views and opinions - maybe that sort of woman is indeed the perfect wife for a President of the United States. I may have my own thoughts about what that tells us, but it is interesting to read about a woman with such a different outlook from your own and to try to see the world through her eyes for a time. I have considerable respect for anyone who has been through what she went through as a 17 year old (when she drove her car through a STOP sign at 50 miles an hour, crashing into and killing a very popular 17 year old male friend) and has managed to come to terms with it and go forward. And there is no denying the wisdom of this woman - whether it has come from her life experience or from her extensive reading - we can probably all take something from the lessons she teaches. Having read the book, I am no more enthusiastic about Bush and his policies than I was before, and have not been converted to a die-hard Laura Bush fan either, but I feel considerable respect for the choices she has made and for her commitment.

5 out of 5 stars The Wedgewood of Laura Bush and Status Value.......2005-02-19

Laura Bush and her mother in law, Barbara, both reflect the enigma society has long created that women who have little or no income lack status or deserve no status, and therefore, have little or no value to society. The misconception arises from the hierarchy which values income level over social contribution and one that fails to recognize the value of marital support, childbearing and raising activities and housewivery. Women and men have been led to believe that unless they have substantial income, they have little value to society. Yet, First Ladies are always valued for their voluntary contributions, expected or not, but anticipated with enormous respect and anticipation with each new administration. Defying the logic that, by default, falls upon every female in this nation, or any nation, the income-based hierarchy of capitalism that fails to acknowledge the contributions of women to their families, to the community, and even to themselves, presents the most schizophrenic of economic philosophies to women, and the most difficult to digest over their lives. Due to the trend to adopt more women into the economic hierarchy of income earnings, Mrs. Bush represents the remnants of our civil society that once respected women for their presence, rather than the barbaric feudal world to which America continues to gravitate which defines women only by their level of income, as it does for males, and ignores their status as wives and mothers, deferring to the singular world where the benchmark of status is conferred by the status of the warrior, as measured by his conquest alone. That women allow this to happen is even more striking, and shows they lack the wisdom of the ages to allow themselves to be placed in so narrow a social box!

Regina Nash has a secret...
Adam Barr is a man with a past...
When fate (or rather Regina's meddling grandfather) throws them together, not only do sparks fly, but so does love! But before the two can have their happily-ever-after they have to learn to trust each other, to open up to each other...to let the past go and look to the future. The question in the book is, are they up to the task?

A great read!

5 out of 5 stars fine nineteenth century Americana tale.......2005-03-30

It is 1894 and only for Judge Madison would irate Adam Barr baby sit three easterners on a trek to Texas from Philadelphia. Adam is bitter at the irony that he was imprisoned for six years for a crime he did not commit while his three charges were guilty of felonies that should have locked them away; instead the Judge has handed them a chance to marry his granddaughter.

The Judge has issued an ultimatum to his granddaughter Wild West photographer Regina Nash to marry Everett, Mitchell or Chance, or lose custody of her nephew Jack. Reggie does not want any of these losers, but also refuses to lose Jack who she has raised as her own. She behaves like a frontier hoyden to run off the naive easterners, but Adam recognizes the masquerade, but is shocked because he desires her. Reggie thought that Texas would cleanse her of her teenage crush for him when he was out of reach, but instead she still knows deep down she loves Adam. Unable to resist Adam enters the competition, not realizing he was sent as the Ace that Judge Madison thought is perfect for his granddaughter.

LADY'S CHOICE is an entertaining and amusing western romance that fans of the sub-genre will appreciate especially when the suitors fail to adjust to the Wild West of the heroine after visiting the "luxurious" Philadelphia home of the manipulating Judge. Adam is an interesting protagonist framed by a close friend and needing to prove his innocence while Reggie feels her Jack should never feel the shame of a convict father. Though the tension between seems forced, readers will enjoy this fine nineteenth century Americana tale.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars This was a romance novel?.......2007-08-01

I'm sorry, but when you have such a dislike for the heroine in the very first chapter you know it is off to a bad start. What kind of 30some year old woman in this day and age equates having sex to 'he's going to propose to me.'? They were dating for 3 weeks and finally sleep together and she thinks he's going to ask her to marry him? I wanted to hit her and tell her to get a clue. Anyway, to be honest...I had to force myself to finish the short novel. The ways that the characters are connected are too convenient...Elly puts an image in my head of a chicken with it's head cut off...it was just way too cliche. Elly and David both think the other is going to leave them over some hotel, Travis's plot for revenge is suddenly forgotten, he proposes to her finally but you see no reason why. It was just...I thought it reminded me of a fanfiction you'd find but would never be seriously published and sold. I give it two stars since it didn't fit the bill of what I would consider a good romance novel.

5 out of 5 stars Paramount love story.......2006-10-13

I really like books that demonstrate that women are at par with men. Not for being a woman you can't work or defend yourself or deck two or three men once in a while. So this reason is the star number SIX for this book.

The other 5 stars are as follow.

1 You'll learn to stop thinking what your partner'll think if you do this or that and will ask him/her exactly what his/her thoughts are.

2 You'll learn that vengeance does not pay anything.

3 You'll learn how to fight for whatever you want.

4 You'll learn that your partner (because many things) is first than your family.

5 You'll have a great time reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Early JAK.......2006-06-13

This is an early (1989) JAK reprinted under Harlequin's Signature Select line. I'm not typically a big fan of these early JAK books but, despite being somewhat dated, this is one of the better ones.

After a whirlwind romance culminating in a brilliant night of passion, Juliana Grant is sure that Travis Sawyer will propose marriage to her. He not only balks, but the worst is yet to come. Travis is actually in town to exact revenge on the Grant family for a terrible betrayal in which the Grants reneged on a promised personal and financial deal. Juliana was unaware of these events and, upon meeting Travis for the first time, not only hired him as a business consultant for her coffee house business, but also embarked on a campaign to win him as her true life partner. When she learns of Travis's plans to ruin the Grant family business, Juliana is initially angry but forgives Travis and convinces him to work instead to save the business.

JAK's early heroes can sometimes be caveman stalker types, but Travis doesn't fit that mold (thankfully). He is driven and hard, but has good reason for his actions. He's quick to recognize he has a good thing w/ Juliana and works to win her and her trust. On her part, Juliana can be overly bubbly, aggressive, and naive at times, but she's a strong character who's used to taking care of herself and going after what she wants in life--without stepping on other people to do it. Both of the main characters are appealing and are the biggest draw for this book.

Less appealing are Juliana's family members. Juliana's parents, uncle, and cousin all behaved abominably in the past and never faced up to their actions or were called to account. They drove their business into the ground twice and Travis had to bail them out both times. Even David, Juliana's one-time love interest, is basically just a handsome, good-natured drip--but at least he's not dishonest like the Grants. Maybe Travis and Juliana would have been better off starting over somewhere fresh, away from both her family and his. Juliana is a big believer in reconciliations and happy endings, tho, and she IS good at getting what she wants, so you know she manages to work everything out to a satisfactory conclusion.

This early JAK isn't up to the same standard as most of her later works, but fans interested in reading/owning some of her backlist shouldn't be disappointed in this effort.

2 out of 5 stars Fair Choice.......2006-03-24

This is the least favorite of Jayne Ann Krantz novels. First, The heroine is pushy and bossy. She makes excuses for the rotten way her family cheated and defrauds Travis. What women proposes marriage the first time she sleeps with a guy. Move over Fantasyworld. Travis even though you feel some sympathy for him he is so much a pushover you want to scream. It's hard to like a novel when you don't like the characters. Wait for the next one.

4 out of 5 stars fun book to read!.......2004-04-14

After a bit of a rocky start, I really enjoyed reading this book. I love a book with snappy, witty dialogue and Lady's Choice doesn't disappoint. I also felt that Julianna and Travis made a good couple that I could see staying together for the rest of their lives (always a good quality in a romance!). There were a couple of problems with this book that some people might find hard to swallow. One problem was the moral ambiguity. The hero starts off carrying out revenge and even though he gets over his anger neither he nor Julianna ever admit that what he did was morally wrong. Even worse are Julianna's family. What they did was absolutely immoral (it makes me mad to even think about it) yet they never even admit they did anything wrong and never try to make ammends. How are we suppose to feel anything but disdain for them? I especially disliked Julianna's weak cousin who I think we are actually meant to like. Another thing about this book that may bother readers is the personality of the heroine. I almost stopped reading the book after the fist couple of chapters because Julianna was so abrasive. It definitely took several chapters before I could get over her almost psychotic behavior at the beginning. But I did eventually warm up to her and I must admit, I have always loved a strong heroine who has absolute faith in her mate. All in all I think the strong points of this book far outweigh the negatives and I highly recommend Lady's Choice (good title BTW).

Vanity Fair writer Gail Sheehy's engrossing biography of Hillary Clinton is a refreshing departure from the political hit jobs that have appeared elsewhere in print. That's not to say Hillary's Choice is a pro-Clinton book--Hillary herself would probably bristle at reading it, and her husband ("The story of the Clinton presidency has always been the story of the Clinton marriage," writes Sheehy) comes off as a bright but demented cad. Yet Hillary's Choice is broadly sympathetic and often nonjudgmental at crucial moments. Sheehy writes very little about public policy, but includes plenty of pop psychologizing. She suggests that the president is a sex addict afflicted by what "a highly qualified mental health professional who works too close to the White House to be identified" calls "dissociative identities"--what used to be known as "multiple personalities ... a sum of various identities that have been split off at some time in the past." And the president gets away with so much in his personal life because Hillary has become his unwitting enabler: "Every addict or alcoholic needs one. The enabler is usually an intimate of the addicted person who allows him to persist in self-destructive behavior by making excuses or helping him avoid the consequences of his actions."

That describes Sheehy's Hillary perfectly: a woman apparently ignorant of her husband's several flings in the White House before Monica Lewinsky came along, and then willfully deceived by the president's lies until just hours before his momentous grand-jury testimony. Theirs is a mother-son relationship in which true love must negotiate its way through astonishingly difficult periods. That's not a formula for how marriage ought to work, but it has nevertheless helped this ultimate power couple achieve enormous success. Hillary's Choice is full of on-the-record and background interviews, all assembled in an absorbing narrative. Writes Sheehy: "The saga of Bill and Hillary, with its echoes of Eleanor and Franklin, or Tracy and Hepburn with undertones of Bonnie and Clyde, is animated by melodrama, high passion, narrow escapes, and knock-down-drag-outs." And it comes alive in this biography of the most enigmatic woman of our time. --John J. Miller

Book Description

Why does she stay with him? Where does she go from here? The author who revealed a generation's Passages now answers all the questions about the most talked-about First Lady in American history. In Hillary's Choice, Hillary Clinton is rendered fully human for the first time. Here is the life of a woman that is also the story of a marriage--and the drama of a presidency.

From her childhood with a demanding father and frustrated mother to her life as a professional wife determined to elect her husband president . . . from the sexual betrayals that nearly broke her to the national scandal that remade her . . . this is the epic journey of a modern American woman, a saga that begins in passivity, moves through self-punishment, and ends in power.

Who was the one "other woman" who posed a serious threat to their marriage? What was the real reason for the health care failure? How did Hillary escape the snare of Kenneth Starr? How has she managed, through it all, to be a good mother? No matter what her future, the mysteries about Hillary Clinton's past have been fully resolved by Hillary's Choice, a stunning achievement from a master chronicler of our times.

Since the Starr report, the nature of the relationship between Bill and Hillary Clinton has been more hotly disputed than ever. Are they a cold, calculating partnership? A sex addict and his enabler? A long-suffering, lamp-throwing wife and her straying husband? Evacuating the private saga of America's most public marriage, Gail Sheehy takes the Clintons from the moment their eyes met (in school) through the incalculable humiliation of the Lewinsky affair and the drama of the impeachment battle. Sheehy reveals the power shifts, the passion, and the price Hillary has paid as well as her choices and their consequences.

2 out of 5 stars Same lousy writing and psuedo-psychobabble,.......2004-07-05

I must really confess that I can,t stand either women, either the author or the Clinton.
When in college I was forced to read the Rhetoric by Aristotle.Thank goodness, he went on and on and on about how a speaker must first establish her/his reputation and give reasons why she/he should be listened to.
Isn,t this the same Gail Sheehey who plagarized (read stole) important parts of her first novel Passages from a UCLA Psychiatry professor who was doing research on the subject. She settled out of court wisely, gave the good Dr. some dough, and must have laughed all the way to the bank. That was a long time ago and like Hilary she thought "wow, I can steal a lot of good stuff, not use some of it, pay the guy off and make a fortune." She has churned out book after book, none very good. She should have gone into politics in another country.Obviously, i was biased against the book but tried hard, really, to see if it had many redeeming qualities.
There is a great deal of factual information about Hilary, her childhood, her relationship with BIll but the interpretations of why she is motivated to do such and such are pretty shabby. I am a psychiatrist and find her attempts at divining both CLinton,s adult personalities from their childhood truamas pathetic guesswork by an amateur. I dont, think the Clinton,s can really stand each other, has anyone seen ANY genuine affection between them for all the time they,ve been on the world stage? They stay together for political and financial reasons and both seem to have very small conscienses while now both getting filthy rich.
Too be totally fair, some parts of the book are very interesting about many factual occurences Mrs.Clinton background but it didn,t change my mind about the author or the politician.

5 out of 5 stars A non-fictional account of the Clintons.......2004-06-17

Read this book and you will understand why Bill and Hillary act as they do. ..... This book is much better than Hillary's fictional account of her life, "Living History". ..... "Hillary's choice is not to know what she knows." ..... A very enlightening account. ...... A "must read".

5 out of 5 stars RECOMMENDED FOR HILLARY WATCHERS.......2002-10-23

I have had the dubious pleasure of reading and rereading quite a number of works addressing the life and times of Hillary Clinton.
While I am not a great fan of Billie, I must admit to sort of an admiration for Hillary. Be-that-as-it-may, I enjoyed this book. It was well written and I thought pretty well ballanced. Many of the "facts" presented, will have to be tested by time, but for now, I feel they are probably as close to the truth we will get.
Ms Clinton is certainly one of the more fascinating individuals of our times and I am quite sure history will continue to judge her as such. She is an interesting subject. In many ways, she is us. The author of this book is an interesting writer and between the author and the subject, we get a very interesting story. Thank you Ms Gail for writing it.

2 out of 5 stars Biased and Damaging.......2001-09-14

Believe it or not, I am one of the few in the country that is not intimately familiar with all of the scandals of the Clinton presidency. I had hoped that, in reading this book, I would understand a little bit more in depth what had happened to have the nation in an uproar and gain some valuable insights to Hillary Clinton. Unfortunately, the bias is so evident in this book that I know that I do not have a complete picture as to what actually happened.

In Ms. Sheehy's eyes, Clinton is a proverbial villian and she just assumes everyone else feels the same way too. While she could still present her case against him and not interfere with the integrity of the story, she takes every opportunity to make jibes and call him names. It is hardly objective to call him a philanderer incessantly - whether he is or not. However, the main problem with this attitude is that she lets this get in the way of reporting the evidence fairly. For instance, she makes reference to the stories of the State Trooper's quite frequently. She is overly eager to use their stories against Bill when it concerns his affairs. However, when the same sources indicate that there was an affair with Vince Foster by Hillary, she refutes their legitimacy. Then she goes on to refer to their allegations against Bill, seeming to forget that they also made allegations against Hillary. Which is it? Were they really discredited? Were parts discredited? If so, what parts and how? If they were discredited, why include a remark from an alarmed Bill Clinton to the effect that the AR governor should not be upset because he controls the state police? This only legitimizes their stories which gets us back to, so what's the deal with Vince Foster? As you can see, this book left me with many more questions than were answered.

While I do have a clearer picture of Hillary Clinton, the picture painted of her while in the White House, gives me serious reservation about how she would act if she was actually the President. If this book's assertion that there was really nothing to hide is true, it means that Ms. Clinton can not be trusted to be forthcoming when she believes that the hand is being called - even if she knows she has a winning hand. It would have made more sense to lay out the evidence against her and then give her argument as to specifically why she was withholding evidence. Maybe I could have seen myself doing the same thing if faced with the same situation but this is presented as a woman's grudge against the media for no justifiable reason. Of course, she also nevers really hits the question as to whether records were withheld by Mrs. Clinton. She spends a few paragraphs on the possible reasons an administrative assistant might not come forward with a box if she had been asked to find it and, not finding it, found it under her desk months later. After spending almost a hundred pages on her early life and college years, couldn't we spare a few to address the questions that would undoubtedly be brought up by events during the presidency? It simply doesn' hold water in my opinion. People have to have a reason for doing what they do. Especially people with advisors.

1 out of 5 stars Just gossip.......2001-07-16

This book really has nothing to do with Hillary or the Clintons -- it has everything to do with Gail Sheehy - her mean-spiritedness, her willingness to gossip, her jealousy, her arrogance, her pain. This book is not good journalism -- not recommended for anyone to read.

Book Description

When John McPhee discovered these journals he found that Ethel Waxham wrote "with such wit, insight, grace, irony, compassion, sarcasm, stylistic elegance, and embracing humor that I could not resist her." Waxham was a Wellesley graduate who decided in 1905 to accept a teaching job at a one-room school in Wyoming. Viewers of the the PBS series "The West," in which this material was used, will enjoy this intimate look at her five-year courtship by John Love and her attempts, as well as those of her college-educated friends, to pursue higher education and a career.

"These letters are among the treasures of American history, bringing to life an adventurous, quick witted woman and the laconic but determined man who wooed and won her. Together, the Loves redefine our understanding of the American Dream and what it took to win the West."--Geoffrey C. Ward and Dayton Duncan, co writers, The West (PBS).

A rich portrait of a woman's life in the American West of the early 1900s--a love story that reads like a novel.

If you are looking for a book that captures the real-life essence of the hardship and romance of the American West, look no further; this book has it all. A wonderfully written story of the lives and loves of the ordinary pioneering people who made America great.

5 out of 5 stars A Moving Collection.......2003-12-27

This collection is truly wonderful. Ethel Waxham and many of her correspondents are of such intelligence, perceptiveness, spirit, and wit that they are, as John McPhee says of Ethel Waxham in the Forward, irresistable. The jounal entries and the letters make it clear that the story of Ethel Waxham's journey from Wellesley to the ranch on Muskrat creek just south of Moneta was deeper and more complex than the story of the PBS series. The endnotes are particularly good -- a story in and of themselves. I do wish there were more pictures of the ranch itself and its surroundings (even from today), "where the gray hills lie, Eternally still, under the sky," and the people, and I wish that I could know more about Ethel Waxham and the authors of the letters. I also wish that the unpublished sources were available -- as they are by "EPW" and J. D. Love, both of whom are of indisputable eloquence, they would make wonderful reading. And finally, as stated by McPhee: "I will wait impatiently for the sampler" -- the collection ends in one sense where the adventure just begins, and I long to see more of the correspondence and hear more of the story of the life at the Ranch on Muskrat Creek.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE ACROSS THE AGES.......2002-06-24

When John McPhee published his now-classic RISING FROM THE PLAINS, he introduced Ethel Waxham Love in the first paragraph. All through the rest of the book he interwove her story with that of her son, Wyoming geologist David Love and the geology of the Great Plains. When fan mail came rolling in, readers wanted to know more about the "slim young woman" who stepped down from a train in Rawlings, Wyoming one fall morning in 1905.
LADY'S CHOICE is Ethel Waxham Love's story. Her granddaughters, Barbara Love and Frances Love Froidevaux, have collected her writings -- journals, letters, poetry, essays, stories -- present them in combination with letters from her friends and classmates as well as from the man she would marry.

Her story begins in the Fall of 1905. She has graduated from Wellesley and spent the Summer working as an assistant to her doctor father in Denver. When she gets the opportunity to teach in a log cabin schoolhouse in Wyoming, she accepts the offer. Her first journal entry describes her journey into the wilds of Wyoming by train, stage coach and wagon. With a sure pen and a sympathetic eye she records her impressions of the land, the people and events. Her observations are those of a sharp mind (she had earned a Phi Beta Kappa key at Wellesley, specializing in Greek, Latin and French), her descriptions are those of a major literary talent.

Of one acquaintance she writes, "Mrs. Butler. . .is a little war-horse of a woman, with a long, thin husband. I'm telling you about her because she has been improving him for twenty years and it is beginning to tell on him."

Her year in this community is surprisingly eventful, considering the isolation and the seeming lack of resources. But Ethel is a resourceful person, full of imagination, the kind of person who makes things happen. She visits friends, attends church services and "sociables," and dines in local restaurants. There are dances and suppers and school entertainments. And there is John Love, the man she will marry after the five-year courtship that is recorded here.

She is enchanted by her surroundings. "The color of the white hills against the pale of the blue sky is most exquisite i the world. The cedars are gray with snow, the sagebrush white clumps of crystals. Where a long way off the sun touches the tops of the snow-covered hills there are shines a streak of silver. A whole white world was there, rising around us, as far as we could see; there did not appear to be such a thing as direction. Everywhere the whiteness, everywhere the hills. Where the stubble of the fields of the range rose above the snow, there was a shading of gold over the white. . .and when the full moon shines out of the deep dark night sky, the hills are like shining silver."

You, too, will find a lady to love in these pages. Her journal begins as she stands on the threshold of her life, emerging from the chrysalis of a protected girlhood toward the challenge of womanhood. Here she records a land, a people, a life, a love, welcoming them as unequivocably and eagerly as only the young do.

LADY'S CHOICE eclipses others of its type. It not only showcases the lady's life and the choices she made, it reveals a true literary talent and a rare human being. Wallace Stegner (ANGLE OF REPOSE, SPECTATOR BIRD, CROSSING TO SAFETY)once spoke of the "inextinguishable western hope" expressed by writers of history as they look at the world and at humanity's place in it. Ethel Waxham Love's letters and journals provide a major contribution to that hope as well as to the history and the the belles lettres of the American West.

5 out of 5 stars Inside look at early west.......2001-11-15

Excellent book covering the lifes and loves of the two major characters. Not only good reading, but a very good insight into the manners, culture and living conditions in the early 1900's.

4 out of 5 stars Career or family? Ethel's choice in 1909.......2001-10-19

Ethel Waxham is, beyond doubt, absolutely charming. The story of her courtship by John Love, a Wyoming sheep baron, is the focus of these collected journal entries and letters. Their correspondence betrays an endearing, down-home, extended Western romance heavily seasoned by John's devotion, Ethel's wry humor, and the quick intelligence of both.

The two of them met in Wyoming, in 1905, when Ethel accepted a teaching assignment there. After the school year was over, Ethel left to continue her education, and subsequently took teaching assignments elsewhere in the country, adventures documented by her letters to John Love. It is evident that Ethel felt keenly the conflict between a poorly-paid, but independent career, and a more comfortable but narrow married life.

Meanwhile, John Love was apparently building a sheep empire. His adventures were of a more dangerous variety: rounding up and taming wild horses, herding sheep in the middle of Wyoming snowstorms, travelling 80 miles through horrific weather to spend a day or two by Ethel's side.

The two principals in this play are engrossing enough. However, there is a whole extended cast of characters contributing sub-plots: Ethel's close circle of college friends and co-teachers, who write to her from the four corners of the US. Their letters provide a glimpse into the lives of young, educated, intelligent, ambitious, and surprisingly (to this reader) modern women. Among them were socialists, vegetarians (Ethel herself!), suffragettes, women pursuing graduate degrees and medical degrees, women teaching in Paris or Texas or California or Illinois. It is inspiring and encouraging to be reminded that women were doing such things long before the Baby Boom generation "invented" women's lib, slowly pushing out the social and political barriers to what women could be and do.

This is personal history, however, not political, and it has all the intimate appeal of narratives which are not varnished, interpreted, collated or generalized by the historian. Peek inside the classrooms, boarding-house bedrooms, and isolated ranches where Ethel and her contemporaries lived, taught, and wrote warm missives to distant friends under dim lamplight. They are our pioneers.

Lynda Stone truly made me an avid reader, I missed at least
10 hours of sleep over the course of a week. Lady Fernstowe,
developing a complex, admired as well as despised the one man
that would change her and the life she thought she so possessed.
I love the way "LYN" visualized thee intamacy between Sarah
and her emaculate Knight. The events that took place really
keep you at lost for words but gracious with curiosity. I
sincerely recommend it for those in favor of realistic,
historical romance.

This book was the best! The entire time my sister was reading it she couldn't stop laughing and it annoyed me to heck. Then I picked up the book and everyone in the house was ready to sock me to make me stop laughing! Of course there were times when I felt perilously close to crying. This book will definetly go on my "favorite" shelf!
