Book Description

Even the smartest women play dumb when it comes to relationships. They make the same mistakes over and over again; they fall for the same kind of guys; and they cry to the same friends when, inevitably, the relationship goes sour. Bestselling authors Steven Carter and Julia Sokol have written the book for every woman who would like to be smarter when it comes to affairs of the heart--Men Like Women Who Like Themselves.

With the candor, compassion, and expert advice that marked their bestseller What Smart Women Know, Carter and Sokol provide the essential insights all women need to know in order to forge healthy, committed relationships. Based on the simple but powerful notion that a lasting relationship means putting yourself first, that true love can only spring from self-love, Men Like Women Who Like Themselves is a trove of relationship wisdom for today's woman.

1 out of 5 stars Complete waste of time.......2004-09-09

"Men Like Women...." consists of one frightfully banal cliche after another, surrounded by acres of white space. Go read the cards in the "Friendship" section of the nearest Hallmark store - the insights you'll gain will be just as profound as anything you could get from this book, and you won't be out any money.

1 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment.......2004-07-30

After reading "Men Who Can't Love" (which, by the way, is brilliant!), I was excited to pick up another piece by these authors. Unfortunately I was more than disappointed. I should have seen a red flag when I saw the title, so I have no one to blame but myself. Any woman who decides to "like herself" just so that a man can like her is sadly mistaken (you like yourself for yourself, not anybody else!). Generalizations such as "a balding man is a better catch than a hottie" are... simply put, ignorant. Theory that a lengthy first phone conversation indicates problems in the relationship going forward is ridiculous. Half way through the book, I came to conclusion that it was written for teenagers - a couple of valid points surrounded by a whole lot of common sense rambling. Women who want to improve their self-esteem should look elsewhere. And finally, who in the world thinks about babies on the first date???

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, could be be better.......2003-03-15

I did enjoy this book, though I only head half of it. It is written in such a way that the first half deals with you when you're not in a relationship and the second half deals with you when you're already in one. I had trouble connecting with it though. Some things were very true -- they were common sense. I was looking for help on how to deal with my lack of self-worth to help me find the right guy; I did not find it here.
But I must emphasize, the book is still great :)

4 out of 5 stars Great Advice.......2003-01-10

This a powerful book. I found it to be more influential than most relationship books. Though I was a bit uncomfortable at first with the untraditional layout - the information is not organized into respective chapters and seems to flow from one subject to another continuously - it was that very conversational style that seemed to drive the authors' points home in a most profound way. Some of those points were:

-To get to the end you must start from the beginning; think about connecting with men before you start thinking about marriage/babies
-everyone makes mistakes, so give men a chance
-husband's usually don't resemble magazine models
-abuse is abuse
-behaviors and conversations to avoid on dates

The tone of the book was more practical than spiritual. The authors do not present "following your heart" and "soul mates" as precepts. For a read along those lines I would recommend mystical relationship books by Deepak Chopra.

This book was also quick and easy read without being too wordy and conceptual; great if you're a busy person.

5 out of 5 stars Changed My Life.......2002-11-07

This book is so simply written, yet very powerful. It gave me the confidence and courage to break off an abusive relationship and start a new! I highly reccomend it to any woman who has low self-esteem. This book will change your life!

5 out of 5 stars A hit!.......2007-09-23

This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.

4 out of 5 stars Our Daughter Loves this Music.......2007-08-16

Our 17-month old always asks for Ella the Elephant music. She's completely entertained by it. My only complaint is that the book has minimal use, as there's not much to point out for an entire song on two pages.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality fun jazz for all ages........2007-06-27

Our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter played 'Ella Elephant Scats...' over and over for the week she was with us. We ALL enjoyed it every time.

5 out of 5 stars 16 month old loves this book.......2007-01-15

Do not know if it is the rhyming in the beginning of the book or the beautiful breakout colors but my 16 month old loves this book.

5 out of 5 stars An intelligent book for babies! .......2006-12-22

I was so impressed by this book! I happened across it a few months ago and had to buy it. since my son is still quite young (6 mos.) we havent really played the CD much, but whenever I bring the book out he grins so big! He loves the sounds and pictures! I come from a family of jazz lovers, so this is right up our alley! I can't wait to get the whole series.

    Book Description

Meet Dalton Moss: quick-witted, impulsive, aggressively unambitious; a halfhearted assistant to a Hollywood events planner, she's haggling over the price of chicken Florentine and waiting for the workday to end.

Meet Dalton's boyfriend, Roman: charming, intellectual, worldly; he lands in L.A. just long enough to slip a two-carat diamond on her finger before flying right off again.

Now meet Dalton's other boyfriend, Jeremy: perfect in his imperfection, surly in his attraction to her and can match her beer for beer; she doesn't want to love him, but can't help herself, despite Roman -- and despite Jeremy's other girlfriend.

    Confused? So is Dalton.

Now that she's engaged, twenty-five-year-old Dalton figures she should temper her penchant for dive bars, abusing her mother's credit card and her fiery, furtive relationship with Jeremy. After all, this is her chance to shed her bad-girl habits and live happily ever after.

But that diamond ring seems to wink at her in defiance, representing everything she's ever, and never, wanted. Roman's offering a rescue from her drowned existence in L.A., but Jeremy could be her twisted ticket to wonderland. She's been holding out for a crushing feeling, a love like that, but will she figure out which man she has it with before she loses them both?

Amanda Hill is a full-time writer living in the Washington, D.C. area. Like Dalton Moss, she grew up in Southern California.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Loving this book!.......2007-08-07

I recently finished this book and I adore it! Amanda Hill is the Carrie Bradshaw for 20 somethings. Her characters are in your face, loud, screwed up, selfish and make no excuses for it! They are also people that I believe many of us 20 somethings can relate too. We are selfish, want to have it all, and just trying to figure out this crazy game called life. Doll, the main character, is someone you could be friends with. Hill writes as if you are involved in the story and in these characters lives. Overall, this book is smart, witty, sassy and well written! Love it!

3 out of 5 stars Messed Up Love.......2006-04-28

This book is not that great. It is hard to get into a book if you don't really care for the main characters.

The main character Dalton Moss is messed up. She is engaged to her boyfriend who lives back east, and sees another man who lives in L.A. who also has another serious girlfriend.

Her fience comes off like an a-hole also because he gets mad when he finds out about Dalton's boy toy, but he also had something going on with his ex-girlfriend when they were working together in Africa.

Also Dalton's friends are weird. Her friend Ava seems like a woman-child, probably due to the fact of her mob family and the step-mother almost the same age as she is who has sex with Ava's brother when their father is away. Her other friend Electra is as messed up as well.

    5 out of 5 stars From a gay man's perspective..........2005-08-30

I was very surprised as I read through this love novel at how well I had adapted to the storyline. What amazed me is how real the characters were and how I could identify with their problems and their day to day existence. The author continued to pull me deeper into the story from one chapter to the next. It has been over a week now that I have finished the book and I continually catch myself pondering different situations of the characters...that to me is a great book. This is all from the viewpoint of a 39 year old gay white male...loved your book and hope to see more of your work in the future!!

    5 out of 5 stars Must Read!.......2005-08-10

I adored this book- the story of Dalton is real, funny and filled with twists. I couldn't put it down. A definate must read for someone looking to laugh and enjoy the life of a twenty-something looking to find herself and find love.

    5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2005-07-13

I was immediately drawn into the characters' lives as I began reading Amanda Hill's "Love Like That". I felt for Dalton as she struggled between loving Jeremy, who she could really be herself with, and Roman, the one who brought a sense of normalcy to her life. This book is filled with surprises and twists--just the kind of book I love to read. I can't wait for the next book from this gifted author.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars BEWARE - Not A Christian Book - Strong Sexual Theme.......2006-12-27

If you are into african-american romance novels like myself then this is the book for you. It is a great romance novel which I love to read along with a little sexiness, But.......the cover and title is very deceiving. This is NOT for the Christian reader looking for a little romance within the church. This book has a LOT of sexual content, values of a TRUE Christian are questioned and you will most likely be offended with this book. There is NOTHING Godly about this book so please beware.

    3 out of 5 stars Too predictable.......2006-06-06

The group discussed the book and felt that the storylines throughout the novellas needed a bit more substance. There were no real issues associated with each short story. Following the discussion with the author, the group learned that the standard format for most romance novels is always the same where there is a featured hero, heroine, at least one love scene along with a happy ending (wedding). But those members who have read other romance novels did not remember a similar format. Within "Can I Gen an Amen," each novella introduced a male and female character and it became very obvious after reading the first novella that these two characters would not only fall in love (rather quickly) but get married by the end of the story. Therefore, each novella became very repetitive and predictable for the reader.

The group also had a perception that there would be some connection between the various characters in each novella. But at the completion of the book, the reader realized that Mother Maybelle and Red Oaks Christian Church were the only link between each story

3 out of 5 stars Modest affirmations in the Amen Corner .......2005-12-05

Capturing the spirit of one church and the antics of a certain matriarch is told in four different vignettes through the eyes of these authors displaying wit, charm and imagery. Every one looks forward to anthologies because they exemplify changes of pace and usually embody stories told from unique perspectives, which gives them flavor. We collectively visit Red Oaks, GA as the setting for this collection of traditional romance stories using the church as a supporting prop. Can these stories stand up individually and collectively to give this book a sense of belonging? The title notwithstanding, the gist of what the authors wanted to convey included the type of romance that you may be accustomed to: unpredictable characters reveling in love scenes with enough drama to make the cast par for this course. Central to all of the stories is Maybelle Carmichael, charismatic and recalcitrant in approach and delivery, who manages to be the catalyst fueling meddlesome mischief. Reverend Avery, is the Pastor is a common denominator to his sermons. Each story boasts the type of women that men gravitate toward, while lacing the stories reciprocally with handsome men women swoon over, all amid small town gossip and jilting jealousy.

Each of these authors are well-adept at how formulaic romance writing is, and they all color their writing acumen with vestiges of it as scenarios are set up with the normal boy meets girl syndrome with a hurdle someone has to overcome to garner the prize. We have four distinct stories with Janice Sims' A Love Supreme setting the stage where the immovable object meets the irresistible urge. Jared Kyles gives all the reasons why he eschews marriage until Alexandra Cartwright comes along to persuade him to change his mind. Usual, you root for the male to get his girl and vice versa. I would have liked more significant drama and more work put into the relationships.

A Love Supreme by Janice Sims pits landscape artist Alexandra Cartwright against businessman Jared Kyles, who is totally against commitment and marriage based on what he perceives as a biological gene. Love and Happiness by Kim Louise hosts Renata Connor as an entrepreneur providing job placement and skill training services to at-risk young men. Mother Maybelle makes it her to recommend Red Oaks Church as a possible sponsor to cure Renata's ailing business. Renata is paired with Devin McKenna, the outreach ministry and entrepreneurial ministry's coordinator. A Love Like That by Natalie Dunbar showcases Dominique Winston, a divorcee who struck out in the marriage game and became the talk of the town and the church. She is the apple of Blair Thomas' eye, a race car driver and engine designer who is in town for six weeks visiting an old college buddy who happens to be a deacon at Red Oaks Church. And finally Love Under New Management by Nathasha Brooks-Harris highlights Valerie Freeman as a woman with a secret as she finds her way to Red Oaks Church to listen to their award-winning choir. There she is in awe of the choir director, and the church is in awe of her voice.

Each story has the proven stamp of Mother Maybelle and her instigating ways. Though there are the usual Christian influences that are prevalent in the book, readers should be wary of labeling the fare Christian inspirational fiction. These stories are pure fiction using the church as a backdrop to tell stories that might be happening in any church in America.

    5 out of 5 stars You've Got My Amen!.......2005-04-28

This was a very nice anthology. Being the Janice Sims fan that I am, I enjoyed her installment the most. Ms. Sims' Love Supreme is beautifully written and it features an adorable couple - Jared and Alexandra. When the two of them explore their feelings for each other, it's obvious that they'll soon be strutting down the aisle of Red Oaks Church. Obvious to everyone except the two of them that is. But with a strong supportive cast of characters pulling for them and the ever-present Mother Maybelle putting her two cents in, these two find blessed love. Great job Ms. Sims!

4 out of 5 stars Now This Is A Powerful Pairing.......2005-04-20

To understand my review, one must first understand that I was most hesitant at first to even read the book. Author Janice Sims I was familiar with, however, she was the only one of the four that I could say this about. Aside from having only read the works of one of the others, the entire concept of "Can I Get An Amen," made me a little hesitant. I wasn't quite sure if the authors would be able to pull off this concept of centering all their stories around this fictitious town and church.

Though I admit, the concept was daring, Arabesque knew their stuff when they assembled Janice Sims, Kim Louise, Natalie Dunbar and Natasha Brooks-Harris together for this anthology. What was indeed a Mission Impossible, became a Mission Fulfilled as the writers penned stories filled with love, laughter, tests, trials and religion.

Readers are bound to cheer as Jared Kyles overcomes his commitment fears to build something special with the lovely, Alexandra Cartwright, in a Love Supreme.

They'll cheer again in Love and Happiness, but not just for the main characters, Renata Connor and Devn McKenna, but also for the troubled teen, Malcolm Goodwin. Malcomlm's story is representative of so many troubled males. And to show a couple's love blossoming while helping out one of the often forgotten ones, was nothing short of genius on Kim Louise's part.

If the novel had stopped with the above two, I would have honestly been able to say readers had gotten their money's worth. But added to the above, were sizzling and humorous romance stories by Natalie Dunbar and Natasha Brooks-Harris. Dunbar's story pulled at your heart strings, while Brooks-Harris' story tugged at your funny bone. And none of this would have been possible without the absolutely, delightful Mother Maybelle. Now if that isn't worthy of an Amen, I don't know what is!

Just like that, the horror of the headlines plunged me right back into the tense, cold memory of Marsha Qualey's JUST LIKE THAT, a story of broken hearts and frozen secrets:

"Snowmobiles and ATVs were illegal in the city parks, but that didn't ever stop people from tearing down streets and over the lakes when there was fresh snow. A sinewy cloud of breath shot out of my mouth as I swore at the disturbance. I stood up, ready to stalk away so I could be alone with my bad mood. A four-wheeler raced past me toward the lake. Its bright headlight cut a swath out of the darkness. There were two people on the vehicle. More happy lovers, no doubt. I'd ventured out tonight to purge my head of thoughts of romance and look what I'd run into. The ATV sped over a snowbank at the edge of the ice and rode the air for a few feet. When it landed, the passenger tumbled off. The driver immediately cut the engine. A girl laughed and shouted, 'I love you Derek!' I sat back down. The movement must have caught her eye because she called out, 'Friend or foe?' They laughed at her wit in a merry tenor-soprano duet. Before I could answer 'Foe,' they sped off again. Then they made a sharp turn and came toward me, angling away at the last minute and stopping with a spray of snow that missed me by inches. 'It's our one-year anniversary!' the girl said. 'Here's a present in reverse! Find someone and have fun!' An unwrapped condom landed on my lap."

In dealing with the thoughts surrounding her having broken up with her longtime boyfriend, eighteen year-old high schooler and aspiring artist Hanna Martin impulsively takes a chilly midnight stroll and finds herself on a bench at the edge of frozen Lake Calhoun. And so Hanna is in no mood for the young couple's antics. She ignores her impulse, and neglects to warn the young lovers that a pair of skiiers had just come off the ice and had made totally sure that Hanna had no intention to go out on the lake, which the skiiers found insufficently frozen to be safe. Little does Hanna Martin realize, stuck in her own thoughts, that she will be the last person to see the ATV couple alive. The girl's frozen body is found the next morning at the edge of the lake, to where she had dragged herself before succumbing. The boy's body is later recovered out in the middle of the lake.

Just like that, they're gone. In coping with her role in the tragedy, about which she says nothing to family or friends, Hanna repeatedly returns to the pond, where she keeps spotting a young man who clearly must have a connection to the young couple. First, she draws him. Then she tracks him down and meets him. The young man, Will Walker, turns out to be the one to have discovered the girl's body. And the secrets surrounding Will--beginning with the fact that his father is the local Congressman--caused the young man to anonymously notify police about his discovery.

Through her getting to know and becoming involved with Will while sharing with him her feelings surrounding the dead teenagers, Hanna Martin will find herself immersed in his family's multiplicity of secrets and will become estranged from her longtime friends.

As Will tells her, "My family's close. We don't let a lot of outsiders in, not like we used to, but anyone who gets near us tends to get sucked in pretty good."

Just like that, Hanna Martin's entire life is scrambled. And there is little that Hanna can do to move on until she overcomes that belief that she has sole responsibility for what happened at the lake.

Marsha Qualey's JUST LIKE THAT is a bone-achingly cold, honest, and memorable tale of life after tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars best one yet, Marsha.......2005-08-17

This was a wonderful book. I felt like I was right there in Minneapolis, in the cold winter. The author really brought home the feelings that come with betrayal and forgiveness. I would recommend it to any teenager.

5 out of 5 stars The story of how a girl's life changes after witnessing a tragic accident.......2005-08-12

High school senior Hanna is having a bad day --- she's just broken up with her boyfriend, and no one seems to understand why she would dump such a perfect guy. Confused and sleepless, she heads out for a midnight walk on a brutally cold Minnesota winter night. As she sits by the lake feeling sorry for herself, she witnesses what she later realizes is the lead-up to a deadly accident, a tragedy she's convinced she could have prevented.

As artistic Hanna revisits the scene of the accident to sketch out her feelings, she notices another solitary visitor to the site. Soon she discovers that another person, Will, is hiding his own secret about that terrible night. United by their role in the tragedy, Will and Hanna develop an immediate physical and emotional attraction. Soon, though, Hanna discovers that Will is hiding more about himself than she had expected.

Before Hanna realizes Will's secret, though, she's already gotten inextricably involved with his large, emotionally intense family. Hanna, who is an only child being raised by her widowed mother, is attracted by Will's passionate, close-knit family, especially by his older sister Aerin, who is recovering from her own tragedy. Hanna's exposure to this new kind of family inspires her to seek out the truth about her own family roots.

Marsha Qualey's novels for young adults always seem to avoid the kinds of clichéd plots that can mar much fiction for teens. An examination of Hanna's guilt over the death of two teenagers could have deteriorated into a simplistic expose of survivor's guilt. Instead, though, Qualey delves into the complexities of Hanna's reactions; she explores the impact on Hanna's friendships, on her academic work, on her artistic expression, and on her close relationship with her mother. The weakest aspect of the novel is the brief "What Happens Next?" epilogue, which ties up plot ends a little too conveniently and simplistically for what is, in all other respects, a challenging and complex portrayal of an intelligent and complicated young woman.

5 out of 5 stars Read That Now.......2005-06-17

Just Like That explores the story of a teenage girl named Hanna. After breaking up with her boyfriend, she thinks she'll have a quiet moment to herself, sitting near the frozen-over lake late at night. She sees a slightly older couple, who urge her to come with them to be safe. She stays put. They warn her about the thin ice and depart. Shortly thereafter, a couple about her age drives by on an ATV, loud and giddy, teasing her. Lonely and cranky, she doesn't pass on the warning about the ice.

The next morning, she hears about their deaths on the news. She realizes she was the last person to see them alive - and that she might have been able to prevent their deaths. But she doesn't tell anyone that she was there, not even her mother, not even her two best friends.

    And things start to change.

Soon, Hanna meets Will, someone else tied in with that night's events. She gets involved with him rather quickly. Just as quickly, she finds herself drawn into a family with hearts on their sleeves and skeletons in their closet.

Just Like That is highly realistic dramatic fiction in the vein of Sarah Dessen - and that is a high compliment coming from me. It is a must-read book for anyone looking for a poignant story with true-to-life, flawed characters. When I make my top books of the year selections in December, Just Like That is sure to be high on the list.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Complex.......2005-05-20

After becoming entangled in the accidental deaths of two local teenagers, Hannah Martin leans on her art for support. Then she meets Will, perhaps the only other person who understands her. In their confusion, they seek comfort in one another, but Will is hiding a secret that will tear them apart.

Just Like That is a novel of great characters. Hannah is so real, she could be your best friend (or more realistically, the girl you hardly notice on the bus). Will, with his innocence and hope, broke my heart just a little bit. However, it is his sister Aerin that steals the show. Years after her entire band was infamously killed in a car accident, Aerin is depressed and has withdrawn from the spotlight. Her acid tongue, fierce determination and desire for a place to call home make her one of the novel's strongest characters.

With Just Like That, Marsha Qualey has constructed a beautiful and complex novel about need, guilt, comfort and trust. I would recommend this to any teen girl looking for a well-written book full of emotional depth and great characters.

4 out of 5 stars quite good fun.......2006-02-04

After finishing "Love is a four-letter-word" in a matter of hours, I immediately ordered Claire Calman's other books. "I like it like that" was the one I got to first, & in many ways it didn't disappoint. But if I were to be honest, I'd have to agree with other reviewers- "Love is a four-letter-word" is a little bit better. And I think, for a very simple reason: Bella & Will are both drawn really clarly in that book, with us knowing them well when we get to the last page. On the other hand, here, in "I like it like that", we get to know Georgia, Ellen & the whole family well...but not Leo or Stephen.

OK, the story: Georgia is a counsellor, lives in a tinier-than-tiny flat in London, has a great big noisy, chaotic but lovely family & a fiance who's the complete opposite: Stephen is uptight, pretentious, bossy, predictable, organized & tidy & worst of all boring. Georgia is also a perfectionist & a tidiness-freak, but apart from that, I couldn't really see (during the whole book) what on earth she found in Stephen, especially after she'd met Leo the Wonderful. That's basically why I felt the 2 men (as another reviewer mentioned) were kind of like plot devices. Not that this makes the book less enjoyable. It's just that "Love is a four-letter-word" was much more special.

What's really good about this book is Georgia's family. Georgia, Ellen & Matt have lost their mother when they were 10, & since then Georgia has kind of taken up the role of being the perfect, mother-like one (that explains her relationship with her younger sister). The book describes, in wonderful detail, the complicated relationship between Georgia & Ellen, & also between Georgia & her long-gone mother. These relationships are the strength of the book, & yes, of course, also the relationship between Georgia & Leo. Which, for my taste, develops in maddeningly slow pace, for no reason whatsoever (& Stephen doesn't count as a reason).

This kind of book is pure, undiluted fun & Claire Calman will go on writing, I hope, for years & years, giving us books such as these for those long, gloomy, rainy days.

Personal ads, for the most part, are boring and surprisingly impersonal. You know the type: "SWM into foreign films and Chinese takeout seeks SWF for romantic walks on the beach." Any ad with a modicum of originality stands out. Advertising copywriters Emily Thornton Calvo and Laurence Minsky approach personal-ad writing the way they'd approach writing a product advertisement. Not only do they encourage you to be more clever and creative, but they help you figure out exactly what kind of person and relationship you're seeking, and then they show you how to express that information in an ad. 25 Words or Less is too long for what it accomplishes (the way I figure it, you have to read about 3,000 words for every one that you'll write), but it will certainly help less-inspired writers pen catchier, more effective, more personal ads. --Jane Steinberg

This book is loaded with ideas that work. Even if you never place a personal ad, you'll find this book enlightening and entertaining. I especially liked the Foreword, he said, with his tongue in cheek!

5 out of 5 stars A compass on the perilous journey of personal ads dating.......1998-08-28

Finding a soulmate in a newspaper ad or out in cyberspace is dicey enough, but without a guide it's like trying to find a golf ball in a snowstorm.

After reading 25 words or less I feel all warm, fuzzy, and safe...no more barking up the wrong tree or running down blind alleys... this book helps you clarify your objectives and takes all the guesswork out of writing, and placing your ad, as well as helping you along once you decide to meet that special someone.

The thing that impressed me most was the personal "personals" experiences, they were honest, and fascinating. Having true-life excerpts made it very easy for the reader to feel comfortable. I felt like I was getting advice from a friend, unlike other how-to dating books that lecture or talk down to the reader making you wonder if the authors ever dated at all. Wonderful work! Kudos to Emily Calvo and Laurence Minsky!

This book has way more information than you'd think possible about how to write (or answer) a personal ad. If you've tried meeting people through newspaper ads before, and failed miserably, this book will show you why--and what to do next time in order to succeed.

And it's also a quick read, because it's packed with real-life examples of actual ads, success stories, and not-so-successful stories.

Two rules of guydom: Don't share feelings with your buddies, and never compliment a pal without insulting him at the same time.

I Love You Man . . . but Not Like That is a humorous collection of sentiments about male friendships that convey everything beer-drinking, sports-loving, macho men may want to say but never will. Most men figure, why share brotherly love when all you really want is for your buddy to share his beer? Its tongue-in-cheek, mock-heartfelt sayings are written the way men really talk.

      Some man-to-man expressions of friendship:

Sure our friendship has passed the test of time, but could it ever pass a Breathalyzer? I often think about how much we've gone through together over the years . . . and the fact that most of it was your fault. I have to tell you, you've touched me . . . seriously. We were both really drunk, but I have a vague recollection of you touching me.Witty, emotionally distant, and universal to male friendships, I Love You Man . . . but Not Like That is something every man should give his buddy¿if the big loser deserves it.
