5 out of 5 stars Feng Shui - Simplified!.......2007-07-10

This book makes feng shui easy and fun! Karen Rauch Carter uses the Black Hat style which is a very simple, but effective, form of feng shui. With this book you don't need a compass, pendulum or certified feng shui expert, in order to enjoy the benefits of this timeless art. You'll be able to start making changes to your home, and your life, immediately with the easy to follow instructions that are provided.

Inside, you will find a chapter for each of the 9 sections of the Bagua. Immediate action items and a short summary are provided at the end of each chapter, which can be referred to over and over. Karen will keep you entertained though out the entire book with her quirky sense of humor! She also provides loads of examples and stories of how feng shui can improve your life. I am an antique dealer, by trade, and I own my own business. I can honestly say that after decluttering my laundry room (my prosperity area) and painting it a pretty shade of lavender, I immediately noticed and increase in sales at my shop!

Just A Tip: Make sure you read chapter 12 before you start making changes in your home, the affirmations in this chapter will make all of your actions much more effective!

4 out of 5 stars Well written and easy to understand.......2007-05-20

This is probably on the top five list of good feng shui books that I've ever read. Very informative and easy to understand and follow. It's really put together nicely.

While I do think there is definately something to harmonizing the energy around you, I don't think that moving your stuff is any guaranteed way to bring a certain thing to yourself. I have a love/hate relationship to books like this. I find some really good ideas, and some I think are silly and just don't work. I know that there are other issues involved. -Like what's in a person's birth chart for example. If someone is having a difficult planetary aspect in their money house, then, no amount of moving furniture/furnishings is going to change that aspect. Although, I do think it COULD help the person deal with it better. By moving something, it could represent a shift in how one has arranged or re-arranged their thinking about the problem. So, in that way, I think it could have a beneficial side.

I found many interesting things in this book, for example, in my helpful people/travel section of my home, that's where I already have the computer (World wide web) and I just happened to have a world map there. I found a lot of other helpful information too.

This is a fun and interesting book, and it's not gonna hurt anything to give something a try afterall. Just see what works for you.

5 out of 5 stars Full of facts, well written.......2007-04-12

Excellent explanations and suggestions without getting bogged down in thousands of years of history. Written in 21st century speak with humor and intelligence. The best Feng Shui book in my bookcase (I have a few) -topping Lilian Too's series. Even tells you the anecdote when the sink is in your romance corner!

5 out of 5 stars Rave Reviews for this book.......2007-04-03

I LOVED this book, and I am having so much fun with this, I have completely redecorated my home, using mostly stuff I already had, and all my friends are commenting "What have you done?" "It feels different in here" and "Everything seems to flow better". I hung a cutglass windchime in my missing "family" space to energize the space as recommended, and within minutes my youngest daughter called me. Amazing! And so much FUN! Now I am waiting for my romance energy to imporove!

1 out of 5 stars A lot of Nonsense.......2007-03-19

I purchase several feng shui books and this one was the easiest to understand. However, nothing happened after purchasing several hundred dollars of feng shui items. Instead it seems bad things were happening to me. I junked all the stuff. I think it's total nonsense and more like witchcraft...stay away from it.

Book Description

Nate Berkus, regular contributor on The Oprah Winfrey Show, contributing editor of O, The Oprah Magazine, and nationally renowned decorator, has created a book inspired by his belief that everyone should love the way they live. This step-by-step guide to achieving your own beautiful rooms is based on Nates signature style and innovative approach to design. As a small boy, Nate could often be found rearranging his room (as well as helping his mother and the other neighborhood mothers rearrange theirs). Throughout the years his passion continued to grow, and soon Nate was heading his own award-winning firm with an elite roster of clients. But it was Oprah Winfrey who gave Nate the chance of a lifetimethe opportunity to go into millions of homes around the world and join her mission to help people live their best lives. It has been a dream come true that has absolutely changed my life, explains Berkus. Not only has working with Oprah helped me redefine my own vision and purposebut she continues to challenge me to use my own life to help others live better. And there is nothing that makes me happier or more grateful than to be a part of that. As Oprah always says, your home should be a reflection of who you truly are. Nate says, no matter how much money you have, he believes that is so very true. I am honored to share my love of design to help everyone make that dream real for themselves with this book.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Blah!.......2007-03-08

I was hoping for something a little more informative. Nate doesn't have a dagree in design, and obviously not one in writting a book on it either... Sorry nate. He has good concepts, and knows what should be included in good design. Each room should have history to it, it should tell a story. So pretty much i just summed it up for you in one sentance. now you don't have to buy the book. I am a tough critic tho, because i am an interior design student...

4 out of 5 stars Inspirations for Decorating.......2007-03-07

I wasn't familiar with Berkus from TV, but love decorating books. Here he shows rooms with before and after photos while describing the challenge and his solutions for it. Each chapter has some questions to help you define what you want your room to feel like and how it should function. I liked the little features like tips for arranging art or the Easy Updates (room changes that could be done in an hour or a day).
Here are the chapter headings:
Getting started : inspirations
At home with color
Something for everyone : family rooms
Living large : small spaces
The right recipe : kitchens
Rest and relaxation : bedrooms
The ultimate retreat : bathrooms
Contain yourself : organizing.

4 out of 5 stars I like the pictures!.......2007-02-09

In retrospect, I'm not sure I would have purchased this book. It's full of good ideas and I enjoyed the pictures, but once I was finished reading it....
If you can get a good price on this, go for it. Otherwise you might consider the library.
But all in all, a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs a Little Nate in Their Homes.......2007-01-15

I'm not a decorator. I don't have an eye for colors and what matches and what doesn't. I must admit that every home that I've had, my mother has decorated for me. Nate Berkus and his book have allowed me to grow up and begin to decorate my house on my own. His ideas are so simple, but with an enormous impact. He details every aspect of home decorating to include painting as well as how to decorate mantels, bookshelves, and other places that sometimes aren't considered in home decorating. The pictures are very beautiful and full of color. If you are a fan of Oprah and especially Nate, then this book is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Love it ! .......2007-01-04

I love Nate and his style and also love this book! It's like having Nate's advice at hand 24/7, right in your own home. If you're interested in interior design and want to make your home more stylish and unique, this book will help you do just that!

Book Description

Written over 2000 years ago, the Kama Sutra's relevance is perennial, since, all of life's expressions, sexual gratification remains one of the most fundamental. Brilliantly illustrated with rare minatures, gouache and tantric paintings, and sculptures on ivory panels, the book imbibes the magic of the Kama Sutra and examines the life force or prana of which the physical and the spiritual are equally potent aspects.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent information on sex and relationships, but get another translation.......2005-07-12

The Kama Sutra has a huge reputation based on only one of its five sections. The positions would be Part 2 and only one chapter of the ten in that section. Most books with Kama Sutra in the title are just going to be some porn structured around that chapter. The entire book is not so much useful in describing the physics of sex as for describing the psychology of sex. (It is good for physical stuff too. At one point it gives a method to get to the G-spot with the fingers, so I have to give Indian medicine props there.)

The five sections are as follows:
Part 1 - Describes how to be attractive. You should bathe before you will be meeting the opposite sex and do something to get your breath smelling better. Also clean your apartment. People call it ritual, but it is excellent advice on not being a slob. For women it gives a listing of the 64 arts which will let you be the favorite in the harem. They are fun. Who wouldn't love a woman who does yoga, can inlay a marble table and knows how to design and build irrigation systems? Much more fun to try to be than the Proverbs 31 woman, but on the other hand kind of a strange laundry list of talents.
Part 2 - The positions, hugging, kissing, scratching and oral. Size of the man and the woman and which positions are better to even thing out in that regard.
Part 3 - How to negotiate an arranged marriage (not so useful now). How to devirginize your bride. You won't be sexing her until about two weeks into the marriage. Its all about gaining her trust and her being comfortable so she won't have hang ups about men, and sadly it doesn't apply to most marriages or devirginizations today.
Part 4 - Handling your harem. How the harem women should treat one another and how to keep them one big happy family.
Part 5 - Other men's wives/concubines and how to sneak around with them.
Part 6 - Courtesans. Kind of like etiquette for prostitutes, except courtesans aren't prostitutes. For example there is some etiquette on how to handle the courtesan living with you and your wives.
Part 7 - Being a hottie. How to make some aprodisiacs and some nice little tricks. This section is probably better advice for the sex life than the positions in that the anatomy is here.

I highly recommend the Kama Sutra but not to people who are looking for the book by reputation as sex sex sex. The book is very much about sex, but more about the whole world of etiquette surrounding male female relations. Virgin marriages (virgin women anyway) are taken for granted and one whole section is about devirginizing the woman AFTER THE MARRIAGE. The advice is very good because it tells how to go about building relationships not how to have one night stands.

Get this book to study and think about and view it as relationship advice and not physical sex advice. So much of the book is about communication and is dead on that it is no wonder it is a classic and likewise shows how important communication is to good sex. In terms of this specific translation, just go for a modern translation of the whole book. The Richard Burton translation is very stilted. He calls the section on oral sex "On holding the lingam in the mouth" So you will be doing a bit of translating of your own as you read prim Victorian descriptions of acts that the Victorians were unlikely to ever mention around company. It seems that the Alain Daniélou translation is good, but I have not read that specific one.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic-to-ebook conversion.......2001-03-26

This is a great conversion into Microsoft Reader format of the classic translation by Richard Burton (No no not the one that was married to Elizabeth Taylor, the one that was married to Isabel Arundell!). Although some people think of the Kama Sutra as a catalog of "positions" it's much more than that - a substantial guide and commentary to human sexuality/sensuality. The publisher takes advantage of all the features that make Microsoft Reader the premier ebook reader program. Clicking any item on the Contents page jumps you to that chapter. Clicking on a footnote in the text jumps you to that footnote - and clicking on the footnote number from there returns you to the text.

The work itself sometimes states the obvious, "Now good looks, good qualities, youth, and liberality are the chief and most natural means of making a person agreeable in the eyes of others," which is no help to craggly, old, broke guy like me. On the other hand, I have to agree completely with Burton's observation that, "It is a work that should be studied by all, both old and young; the former will find in it real truths, gathered by experience, and already tested by themselves, while the latter will derive the great advantage of learning things, which some perhaps may otherwise never learn at all, or which they may only learn when it is too late."

There are no illustrations in this version - no need for them, in my opinion. This isn't supposed to be an aid for...uh...self titillation. Besides, illos would have just increased the download time. 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Kama Sorry Sutra.......2001-01-04

This book is not a Kama Sutra. There are no illustrations. The whole purpose of this book is to enhance ones love life. I personally don't see how this particular book could do it. Men need to see pictures. It is known in psychology circles that men need visuals.

2 out of 5 stars Real bad.......2000-06-01

After reading this book for a week, I came to have an inherent dislike in the concepts taught. I believe that the book is thought out and written by a bunch of male chauvinists.

In the chapter of 'On certain forms of marriage' in the section of 'On the acquisition of a wife', it is stated that a man should obtain a girl by means of disparaging the man the girl was supposed to be married to in the mind of the girl's mother. The man who liked a girl should intoxicate her and after that, take her to a secure place and enjoy her. This is disgusting.

Then it goes on to talk about women resorting to prostitution and the various ways in which a courtesan could gain wealth from men.

Perhaps I was being ignorant about the culture of those days and the society in which they lived in but I believe that it is not much different than it is in this present society.

From the point of a woman, there are a lot of things that I do not agree with morally.

I guess the most enjoyable part of this book is perhaps the description of various possible formats of sexual intercourse.

In conclusion, every individual has their own definition of Kama Sutra. One does not need to consult manuals like this to improve love life. As long as partners understand each other, love each other with all his/her heart and have concern for each other's welfare, then they can enjoy their long voyage satisfying each other's desire.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2006-09-25

Although Mr. Wheatley is a little verbose in sections, his documentation of Zen Buddhistic Principles found throughout the disciplines of Mathematics, Physics, Theology, etc. forms a nice reference guide for anyone tuned into that wavelength. In particular, his explanation of how Godel's Theorem and Cantor's "Confusion" shed great light on the difference between GOD's Logic and Man's Logic should be a revelation to any undergraduate level math students who encounter these ideas for the first time. Curiously, Mr. Wheatley makes many misstatements about both Zen Buddhism Principles and the Bible, however. For example, by accepting the false biblical teaching of Original Sin, he misses the point that eating the proverbial apple gave Adam and Eve the ability to make Moral Discernments in fulfillment of GOD'S PERFECT PLAN. As proof, read Genesis 1 which states that Man and Woman were made in GOD's Image. Genesis 4 shows that Adam and Eve weren't the first humans on Earth at all, there were plenty of others by then. The allegorical meaning of the story of Eden, then, isn't that Adam and Eve were the first humans on Earth, but they were the first humans with the ability to make Moral Discernments (in GOD's Image). In fact, Moral Discernment is God's Unique Gift to Man, which is the basis of consciousness, not some Math Formula. But because the wages of the resulting, unavoidable sin are Death, many people foolishly try to return to Eden by: (1) living a sinless Life (2) by removing choice altogether by passing and enforcing strict Laws (3) by attempting to do away with Moral Discernment and the resulting consequences for our actions altogether by trying to remove Shame from Shameful actions. GOD is not some ethereal Man-In-Space, but is simply the Totality of all Real Things, The Set of All Real Sets. GOD's Love manifests itself from the amazing sub-atomic relationships that underly this magic Life all the way to the grandest of Macroscopic Scales, the Interconnected Totality itself. The Zen Buddhism connection can be found by simply superimposing the 0 symbol and the symbol for infinity (8 on its side) in Mr. Wheatley's supposedly "new" formulation that 1 = 0 x infinity. Superimposing them gives you the yin-yang symbol. A potential disadvantage of artificially separating the infinity from the zero, however, is that Mr. Wheatley is able to equate the entire expression to be equal to 1. This potentially might obscure the fact that the deepest meaning of the yin-yang symbol is that it is both 2 and 1 AT THE SAME TIME. His overall equation does preserve that important meaning by utilizing a single element on one side of the equation and two elements on the other side of his final TOE equation. This may be hard to see for some at first, however, which could potentially obscure the richest meaning of this beautiful symbol/equation. A much more GODLY TOE, in my opinion, comes from Euler, who discovered that e ^ (i * pi) - 1 = 0. When someone can explain that relationship, then they can say they know GOD.

3 out of 5 stars A life changing experience??.......2005-06-13

This book is an easy read and does succeed in being somewhat thought-provoking. However, I am a little surprised at the awesome, "life changing" experience it apparently was for many of the readers. Wheatley's conclusions were interesting but nothing really new. All of his material should have passed through the mind of any thinking person without the aid of this book.
The reason I gave this book three stars is because he uses unneccessarily wordy ways of describing simple things. Also, the author and many other reviewers insist that Wheatley makes only one assumption. Wrong-his whole theory is one big assumption.
Overall though it was a very interesting and worthy book.

5 out of 5 stars Should be Required Reading for everyone.......2004-06-26

This book will change your life. You will never think the same way you did before reading it.
I have a degree in chemistry and I think this book should be read by everyone in the sciences. Without a doubt, the best book I've ever read. Why and what are two of our best friends

5 out of 5 stars A Very Important Book.......2004-01-26

I must preface my review by stating that I have never been so excited and moved by a book that I have wanted to contact the author. That is what I found myself doing upon reading this book. This book is just what its title says. The author does not "miss a beat" describing in great detail using practically every aspect of scientific knowledge from atomic structure through logic to quantum theory---we are even given a valuable explanation of Love. This text may be challenging to read for those unfamiliar with scientific terminology. And it can also be difficult for those with a science background, such as myself. However, for me it is well worth the work necessary to strive to understand the unfamiliar terminology. (I am continually learning from this book. I am presently on my third reread).

One of the author's main messages is "not" to believe anything without first verifying it with reality, as we know it. He calls it the "Personal Explanation Principle". He indicates that religions are just such belief systems that we as people "fall" victims of; because we do not verify the beliefs with the facts, as we know them, of reality. He gives a very detailed explanation of how the New Testament can be explored using his methodology.

The author methodically and meticulously walks us through his thought processes, which took 30 years to assimilate, of delineating the structure of reality and the nature of consciousness. Included in the "walk" are many of reality's phenomena made revelatory. An example of that, for me, would be the dual nature of light. It's particle/wave duality, which is explained as "functions". Also, when the author took me on the mental journey of "Setness" an exhilaration of the magnificence of life swelled up in me.

To me this is a very important book that should be read by all that are seekers of truth. It is for all those wanting to gain an understanding of the purpose for their existence, wanting to know where life is headed towards, and wanting to know who God is.

This book will enlighten and develop one's mind substantially. You will discover that this is our objective.

And yes, I contacted the author and he responded openly.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating!!!.......2002-12-30

This is a really great book. It combines philosophy and science in order to tackle a multitude of existential problems. The author's style of writing is fresh and alive, I recommend ths book to anyone interested in expanding the fronteirs of their understanding. Books I also liked are a Universe in an Nutshell by Steven Hawkings and Descent into Illusions by Paul Omeziri.

Book Description

This stunning volume focuses on the qualities of the old things in our homes (the patina of an old table, pewter dulled by age, old floorboards that creak) and how to live with and incorporate them into our personal aesthetic. Divided into chapters by the qualities of old—peeling, dried, tarnished, faded, chipped, frayed, rusty, and mossy—this unique book not only pays tribute to furniture, textiles, china, silver and other accessories with these qualities but also shows us how best to preserve, adapt, and arrange them. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs that highlight the warm colors and rich textures of wood and paint, cloth and leather, For the Love of Old also includes ideas and recipes for saving old items from the junk pile, preserving and caring for the old things you have, giving newer things a lived-in feel, and bringing an enduring personality to every home.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2007-09-03

This book is beautiful. It is a coffe table copy. One you want to use for display. I was drawn with interest to someone who sees beauty in such old things. The book is very unique. I'm glad I have a copy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-02-07

I loved Mary Randolph Carter's book American Family Style so much and this book seemed to me like a part two of that original book. Although this book wasn't filled with pictures of her family it was filled with the same warmth and comfort as the original. Even though it may not be filled with exactly the things I might put in my own home it is something I enjoy reading. You can tell the author truly LOVES these lost, rusty, beautiful things. I truly can appreciate that.

5 out of 5 stars Love It or Hate It - I Loved It.......2007-02-01

Many, indeed virtually all, of the books we see on interior decorating show rooms set with furnishings that are either brand new or antiques that are pristine and beautiful. They are a very, very long way from those long ago college days when glasses came from empty jelly jars and none of the plates or silverware matched.

Ms. Carter's book is a celebration of the old, the frayed, etc. The individual table settings don't have to be all alike. They just need to be interesting, attractive, have a story to tell. I particularly liked her comments regarding silver, probably because I've gotten a lot of it from my mother and grandmother.

Ms. Carter has an artistic eye that sees art where other people see junk. She matches her eye with her photographic skills that enable her to show exactly what she means. It's a book to be celebrated by those of us who like garage sales, thrift shops and making that special find.

5 out of 5 stars FOR THE LOVE OF OLD: LIVING WITH CHIPPED, FRAYED, TARNISHED, FADED, TATTERED, WORN , AND WEATHERED THINGS THAT BRING COMFORT..........2007-01-10

AN AWESOME, INSPIRING, AND COMFORTING BOOK FOR THOSE WHO LOVE THE OLD AND ECLECTIC LIFESTYLE. SIMPLY WRITTEN AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOS FIT FOR FRAMING. A GREAT RAINY DAY READ AND SUITABLE FOR THE COFFEE TABLE.

1 out of 5 stars Not her best..........2007-01-09

I love her other books, I was so looking forward to reading this one over a long afternoon. I fell hook, line and sinker for her romance with flea markets and flea market treasures. This one looks like she took the leavings off the cutting room floor from her other books, packaged it nicely and called it good. Except it is not, good that is. Sorry but this stuff just looks like junk that I would not give a second glance to at a yard sale or flea market. And the price is so high!! Mutton done up as lamb.

Book Description

Did you ever wonder why cheap wine tastes better in fancy glasses? Why sales of Macintosh computers soared when Apple introduced the colorful iMac? New research on emotion and cognition has shown that attractive things really do work better, as Donald Norman amply demonstrates in this fascinating book, which has garnered acclaim everywhere from Scientific American to The New Yorker. Emotional Design articulates the profound influence of the feelings that objects evoke, from our willingness to spend thousands of dollars on Gucci bags and Rolex watches, to the impact of emotion on the everyday objects of tomorrow.

Norman draws on a wealth of examples and the latest scientific insights to present a bold exploration of the objects in our everyday world. Emotional Design will appeal not only to designers and manufacturers but also to managers, psychologists, and general readers who love to think about their stuff.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An interesting view about how products can change our lives.......2007-09-30

Don Norman with this books exposes a review based on how products can make us feel better, and how they can influence our daily life in different contexts of use. If you're lookin' for a tutorial about "how make an emotional product", this is not the choice. Nevertheless, you'll never find it eather. Norman only puts a name to a phenomenon that already exists, but in a entertaining way that offer to the reader a new form to understand the design of products. It is worth it to read this, absolutely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jakob Nielsen's Other Half.......2007-09-22

This book breaks down 3 categories of things we look at when we're deciding whether or not we like things, and then proceeds to show how one can analyze everyday things in those terms. I wouldn't say it's enlightening, but it does give you categories and terms for expressing things you already knew on some level. Don Norman's writing style is warm, and personal, and the book is easy to read. I've seen his name next to Jakob Nielsen's plenty of times but had no idea who he was or what he was about, so it gives a little insight into who Don Norman is as well, and why he and Jakob make good partners.

1 out of 5 stars Author Ego.......2007-09-04

This book is uninspiring and boring. The author has a huge ego and does not translate his ideas effectively. The book is a long boring read and not anything new to those in design.

4 out of 5 stars Subtract robots to get a great book on how emotions affect purchases.......2007-02-15

Norman opens the book with a discussion of three teapots he owns. He doesn't use them, but he loves how each tells a story. One is impossible to use, one is a classy glassy Michael Graves design and one is unusual. Norman says when we like the look of an object; we're more willing to overlook its design flaws as opposed to using something with no flaws and an ugly design.

I believe [...] is a good example of this from a web site perspective. It isn't so much about flickr's look-and-feel, but many of the non-designers, everyday Internet users understandably find the site difficult to use. [...] gained a reputation in the world of web design and IT -- the kind of people who find their way around the more difficult to use sites -- and many flocked to it because of word of mouth.

A friend of Norman's enthusiastically showed off his recent purchase of old, heavy and shiny drawing instruments including compasses, dividers and extension arms. For the author, the instruments evoked negative memories of using the difficult and messy tools. Enough time had passed for his friend to overlook the negative experience he had with the tools. Thus, when he found them, he saw them as a collectible reminding him of the "good old days" rather than something he hated using. Had those negative experiences been more recent or memorable, would he have bought the set?

The focal point of Emotional Design is that "attractive things work better." Norman explores how emotions affect purchase decisions based on three aspects of design: the visceral (appearance), behavioral (performance) and reflective (memories and experiences).

Understanding the three parts of design helps a business make the most of their product designs and marketing efforts. After all, an ad has images and those images can stir emotions. Service-based business can turn the intangible into the tangible and apply the concepts from the book.

Norman offers intriguing examples in the book to show how objects evoke emotions. The book loses its way in the last part when the author delves in the world of robots. While it talks about the possibility of robots having emotions, it tells nothing about "products" and human behavior. Except for this part, the book was a quick and fascinating read. Those who want to understand how design influences purchases will enjoy the book. Many of its concepts apply to business situations related to selling and designing products.

5 out of 5 stars Cognitive science explains our love of good design.......2007-01-06

Understanding the emotions consumers feel about the objects you sell can help your business make the most of its product designs. Expert Donald Norman explains how being attractive, fun and enjoyable makes a product better. He explains that the emotions which affect purchase decisions are based on three aspects of design: "visceral" (appearance), "behavioral" (performance) and "reflective" (memories and experiences). He provides interesting case studies to show how objects evoke emotions. Norman's central theme is that "attractive things work better." And, the book works best when he hews to that theme; the last section, where he veers into a discussion of robots, doesn't seem as pertinent or as strong. We recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how design affects emotions, and how emotions affect purchasing decisions.

    Book Description

Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane has always stood at the intersection of fashion, art and music. Over the past 10 years, his slick, sexy designs and signature cut have revolutionized menswear. Several bodies of his photographic work--2005's London Birth of a Cult and his ongoing "Rock Diary" series for V magazine--have documented underground rock culture at its loudest and most extreme. In this latest project, Slimane teams up with the editors of Visionaire and V to deliver Portrait of a Performer, an exclusive photojournal devoted to the provocative musician and muse, Courtney Love. Shot in New York in August of 2006, just before the release of Love's latest record, the intimate black-and-white studies capture the American pop icon, semi-nude, just before her return to the Billboard charts--defiant, mesmerizing, flawed and vulnerable. Portrait of a Performer documents a highly charged encounter between two creative forces who have influenced rock and fashion, each on their own terms.

    Book Description

The technology underground is a thriving, humming, and often literally scintillating subculture of amateur inventors and scientific envelope-pushers who dream up, design, and build machines that whoosh, rumble, fly—and occasionally hurl pumpkins across enormous distances. In the process they astonish us with what is possible when human imagination and ingenuity meet nature’s forces and materials. William Gurstelle spent two years exploring the most fascinating outposts of this world of wonders: meeting and talking to the men and women who care far more for the laws of physics than they do for mundane matters like government regulations and their own personal safety.

Adventures from the Technology Underground is Gurstelle’s lively and weirdly compelling report of his travels. In these pages we meet Frank Kosdon and others who draw the scrutiny of the FAA, ATF, and other federal agencies in their pursuit of high-power amateur rocketry, which they demonstrate to impressive—and sometimes explosive—effect at the annual LDRS gathering held in various remote and unpopulated areas (a necessary consideration since that acronym stands for Large Dangerous Rocket Ships). Here also are the underground technologists who turn up at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada high desert, including Lucy Hosking, “the engineer from Hell” and the creator of Satan’s Calliope, aka the World’s Loudest Thing, a pipe organ made from jet engines. Also at Burning Man is Austin “Dr. MegaVolt” Richard, who braves the arcing, sputtering, six-digit voltages of a giant Tesla coil in his protective metal suit. Add in a trip to see medieval-style catapults, air cannons, and supersized slingshots in action at the World Championship Punkin Chunkin competition in Sussex County, Delaware, and forays to the postapocalyptic enclaves of the flamethrower builders and the future-noir pits of the fighting robots, and you have proof positive that the age of invention is still going strong.

In the world of science and engineering, despite its buttoned-down image, there’s plenty of fun, humor, and sheer wonder to be found at the fringes. Adventures from the Technology Underground takes you there.

    • Launch homemade high-power rockets.

    • Catapult pumpkins the better part of a mile.

    • Watch robot gladiators saw, flip, and pound one another into high-tech junk heaps.

    • Dazzle the eye with electrical discharges measured in the hundreds of thousands of volts.

    • Play with flamethrowers, potato guns, and other decidedly unsafe toys . . .

If this is your idea of fun, you’ll have a major good time on this wild ride through today’s Technology Underground.

From the Burning Man festival in Nevada’s high desert to the latest gathering of Large Dangerous Rocket Ship builders to Delaware’s annual Punkin Chunkin competition (a celebration of “science, radical self-expression, and beer”), you’ll meet the inspired, government-unregulated, and corporately unfettered men and women who operate at the furthest fringes of science, engineering, and wild-eyed arc welding, building the catapults, ultra-high-voltage electrical devices, incendiary artworks, fighting robots, and other machines that demonstrate what’s possible when physics meets human ingenuity.

    From the Hardcover edition.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Alternative Science Projects!.......2007-09-18

Bill Gurtelle's latest book is a great intro to several fringe science & engineering contests & hobbies. It's a good read, without getting into too much technical detail (the Further Reading section @ the end leads you to sources for more details on the topics you liked reading about). Pick it up if you're a tinkerer, a hacker, or want to find something non-frumpy to do with your engineering degree! :]

3 out of 5 stars Misleading web page.......2007-07-27

I must admit I was disappointed with one aspect of the book: the web page from which I ordered it showed a number of color photos of items that I expected to be in the book - leading me to believe these photos were excerpted from the book: but the book had no photos - only a few drawings. A large part of my motivation for purchasing the book was to see pictures of some of the items discussed.

The book was fairly interesting, but there are no photos in it.

    1 out of 5 stars A RATHER DISAPPOINTING PUBLICATION........2007-05-13

Nothing technical in this book. More about the development and use of different items made by others. Lacking pictures, plans, etc.
Okay reading but not much to be learned about tinkering or making your own projects come to life.

3 out of 5 stars Adventures from the Techno;ogy Underground: Catapults, Pulsejets, Rail Guns, Flamethrowers,Tesla Coils, Air Cannons, and the Gar.......2007-03-08

I did not like this book at all. It just was not what I expected. I found it very "Verbose" and way to boring. I wished I had not bought it.

3 out of 5 stars A little mad scientist in all of us..........2007-01-16

Did you ever get the urge to go pick up some scrap metal and bang together a fighting combat robot, flamethrower or a gigantic pumpkin-chucker? This book is full of tales of backyard builders and basement scientists who have built just these machines and more. The builders are motivated by a desire to compete against other builders and the satisfaction of making something unique rather than any monetary reward. The competition gets fierce when pride is on the like at the World Championships of pumpkin chucking in Delaware where massive air cannons battle middle-ages catapults to see who can hurl a pumpkin the farthest. Homemade combat robots battle to the mechanical deaths in improvised arenas carved out of scrap metal yards. Wild performance artists use flamethrowers and mega-volt electrical generators to create wild spectacles for the audiences at the Burning Man alternative culture festival. Part Mad Max, part mad scientist, this book proves that the only limit to our creations is our imagination.

This book is an excellent resource for creating a marriage pleasing to God. I would recommend this to newly engaged or married couples as well as those married for several years.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book that can change your marriage.......2007-01-04

My wife and I used this book for a small group we did at our church and it was amazing. The principles that are used in this book relate to the reasons why we have trouble in marriage. The author is very insightful into how to have a successful marriage and how we can achieve the marriage that we have always wanted. I would recommend this book to anyone and being a pastor at my church I will continue to use it to improve my marriage as well as others.

4 out of 5 stars Great marriage advice.......2006-11-10

This book has really been helpful - coming from a couple who has experienced heartache in marriage, they offer practical tips for growing your marriage. The focus on God as the center of your marriage and on changing your own attitudes and behavior is key. Great investment in your marriage!

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best & Most Balanced Books on Marriage.......2004-03-13

This is one of the best and most balanced Christian books I have ever read on marriage. So many books on Christian marriage are trite - Christian claptrap - with silly, insipid advice. This book actually includes practical suggestions for dealing with the real problems of marriage. Even more refreshing is the author's frankness about the terrible effects on our society of fatherless families and the need for fathers to pay attention to their wives and children without dominating the family. Wow, finally someone willing to speak the truth.

Also, few Christian books address single parenting or marriages in which one person is doing all the work - this one does AND offers practical advice on how to deal with these very common situations. It addresses what happens when a husband puts his job first, cheats, or simply won't work on the marriage. It also addresses what happens when a woman is demanding, cold or critical. The discussion on sex is better than most Christian books if a litle bit dated (definitely written from the older male's perspective).

My one critique: this book, while better than most Christian books when it comes to explaining the Christian wife, does not address the prevalance of working wives and the effects on the family when MOM cheats, is working too much, or no longer wants to work on the marriage. It's time for contemporary Christians to wake up and realize that it's no longer just Dad who's not keeping the home fires burning. Few Christian books seem to want to deal with this particular issue even though it is increasingly prevalent.

Even with this minor critique, though, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is much better than "The Power of a Praying Wife" or similar nonsense books that give endless examples from the author's own (relatively easy) marriage and very little solid advice. "Marriage on the Rock" includes behavioral solutions that address serious marital problems, while of course incorporating prayer. Plus, Dr. Evans clearly has done enough counseling that he knows a lot about what he writes and can provide real-world examples. His presentation is not sugary or pie-in-the-sky and he doesn't pretend that all marriages will work...but his advice on making them better is excellent.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-01-25

This is one of those books you read because you don't want to stop reading it. To the point, Mr. Evans provides a lot of "meat" without extra fluff. It helped me to communicate my needs and understand my future husband's needs.

The book was so good that when a non-christian man I barely knew told me his wife left him, I offered to lend him the book. The reasons his wife left him were straight out of the book. (She had asked him to go to counceling a year earlier but he refused because he didn't think there was anything wrong.) He also really enjoyed the book and said that it opened his eyes to see the error of his ways. His wife noticed the change in him. He explained about me and he lent her the book. At first she asked him if I was a weak woman allowing myself to "submit". He explained that I am an outspoken, career woman so she finished reading it. His wife saw the error of her own ways and how her reactions to his bad behavior was also damaging their realationship.

The book has changed the way all three of us, christian and non-christian, understand marriage. The great news was that you can work at and get those good feelings back again with your spouse. This book is fair and two sided. It doesn't blame the wife or the husband. I would highly recommend this book.
