Book Description
In 1999, Sarah was a typical bride-to-be, flustered with wedding details. Then the groom called. "I don't want you to panic, but I might not be able to come to our wedding..."
So began Sarah Smiley's life as a military wife. As a former Navy brat herself, Sarah knew better than anyone that weddings and funerals-even childbirth!-take a backseat to Uncle Sam. But just as the young syndicated columnist gets comfortable with the military wife's routine, her husband is sent away for unexpected deployment. What follows is a true test of strength and wit. From getting locked out of the house in cowgirl pajamas to wrestling with the temptation of infidelity, Sarah exposes it all with candor, heart-and knowing humor.

A former Navy brat and present-day Navy wife, Sarah Smiley knows better than anyone that weddings and funerals-even childbirth!-take a backseat to Uncle Sam. And it seems that every time the young, nationally syndicated columnist gets comfortable with her routine, her husband is sent away for an unexpected deployment. What follows is a true test of strength and wit that even Sarah's nit-picking mother-in-law couldn't have prepared her for. From raccoons in the attic to getting locked out of the house in cowgirl pajamas to developing a crush on her handsome doctor, Sarah learns that growing up means taking a leap-and sometimes going a little overboard. In this memoir, she exposes it all with candor, heart, and a whole lot of laughs.

A Greatly Enjoyed Read.......2007-06-29
A friend passed this book along to me, and while I was leery at first, I was thoroughly impressed with Sarah Smiley's account of the partner side of deployment. I am the long-time girlfriend of a military man and have experienced two deployments with him. I could whole-heartedly relate to many of Sarah's experiences and found her description of deployments from the spouse's perspective right on in many respects. What I appreciated most about her book was the humor with which she wrote. Not only was she able to make me, the reader, laugh at her actions and beliefs, but I could tell she was laughing at herself. This author truly has a fine gift of storytelling. Though I thought the book wrapped up and resolved her issues rather quickly, by the end, I found myself wanting to read more by this author about her life. I highly recommend this book, and I hope the author has another out soon.
Funny but not hilarious.......2007-06-09
It was a good read of displaying life as a military wife. I am an army wife but i was able to relate it her adventures an navy wife. It was funny but not hilarious like people made it seem. But all in all i would recommend it. I finished it pretty fast
Great Read.......2007-04-09
This is NOT a guide so if you are looking for a guide or how-to book this is NOT the one to pick up. This is a humorous look on the life of one military spouse during the deployment of her servicemember. It details her goofups and her smart moves. Great laugh and definitely an easy read. You want a guide don't get this book but if you want something to giggle over and read to pass away the time then pick up this book. You'll be surprised at how real she is and how it seems she is talking directly to you detailing her anecdotes from her experience during a deployment.
Going Overboard: The Misacventures of a Military Wife.......2007-03-31
Wonderful! So true! Your husband doesn't have to be a pilot for a wife to have this happen. My husband is with the Air Nat'l Guard and a fireman and is in Iraq for a 4month deployment "we" volunteered for! All those feelings happen! It was so reassuring first to know I wasn't alone and second to know that reservists and national guardsmen go through the same feelings too! God Bless the military and God Bless their spouses and families for supporting them and what they do! Tammy Schnitker
Entertaining and Moving.......2007-03-30
She's been billed as "the Erma Bombeck of the homefront," and in her nationally-syndicated column, Sarah Smiley certainly uses humor to convey truth about life as a military wife. But in "Going Overboard," Smiley serves up something different.
Tracing her husband's year-long overseas deployment, she offers a candid, unapologetic look at her own insecurities and idiosyncrasies and, in the process, allows us to accompany her on a perilous journey from dependant (as the military calls spouses and children) to independence. The book jacket insists it's funny, but I didn't laugh - I cried. Several times. I'm guessing you will, too.
Book Description
"6/9: Evidently I wasn't supposed to put so much oil in the mower. The smoke went away fairly quickly, though. Connor even got to go for a ride in the fire truck."Alesia Holliday has survived scenes like this and more while her husband, a naval flight officer, has been away on military duty. They have forged a different kind of marriage-one that the 1.5 million current active-duty service members and their families will identify with. E-mail to the Front has a large built-in audience that boasts a camaraderie strengthened by shared difficulties and discoveries. E-mail to the Front consists of short commentaries by Alesia and an e-mail dialogue between her and her husband while he was on deployment. In text filled with empathy, gut-level honesty, humor, and unflinching support, chapters cover everything from "Departure: Only 183 Days to Go" to "Rebellion of the Appliances" to "It's Like Being a Single Mother, but I Can't Date." E-mail to the Front will appeal to everyone who appreciates the courage of those who choose to serve their country, the families who are meeting the challenge of military duty, and those who love and support them. Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist Dave Barry has written a cover quote for the book, and best-selling author Suzanne Brockmann said "This book should be required reading for all Americans."

Honest and inspiring.......2007-07-29
I read this book as part of research into the type of challenges I might face before I married someone in the military. Unlike so many books that seem to claim that if you bake cookies everything will feel all better, Ms. Holliday bares her soul and shows us what a real military spouse goes through on a day to day basis.
Her emails and commentary are poignant and honest. My only criticism is that I feel she does fall a bit in the trap many military spouses fall into, that of trying to gloss things over and make them sound better than they actually are.
Nevertheless, I think this is a wonderful book, especially for those preparing for their spouse's first deployments.
Excellent!.......2007-01-10
This book was wonderful. Very well written and hilarious! Even though deployments can be a hard time, I enjoyed that she composed this book with a light-hearted and humorous approach. I have loaned it to several of my friends and they too have delighted in her story. Excellent read, I would reccomend it to anybody, military or civilian.
Ms Holliday speaks for those of us who can't...........2006-11-26
I am an AF Veteran but also military spouse for 21 years now. I have been trying to get this book for sometime and was finally able to get my hands on a copy. Of course, it arrived when I was 3 months into yet another deployment to Iraq and I debated on whether it was a good time to read it or not.
I chose to read it because the God's honest truth was I didn't think there was ever going to be a "good time" to read this.
The book does not disappoint. There were many stories I could sit back in my chair and smile and think "Thank God I am not the only one that did that". Some stories made me laugh and many others made me cry.
My daughter who is 18 saw the book sitting on the table and picked it up and asked if she could read it when I was done. She's grown up in this world and without having read a word of the book, commented that Military Wives were the strongest women she knew. That meant alot to me, knowing all the struggles her and I have had, which only seem to get worse when dad is off in some foreign land.
Us veteran wives know that what can go wrong will go wrong when there is a deployment. We try to prepare for every crisis, and we always think we're ready, but to be honest you can never be truly ready.
Thank you Ms Holliday for sharing your personal triumphs and crisis with us. And thank you for writing this book. This wife salutes you.
Wow, what a book!.......2006-09-27
This book may be difficult to find - take the time! A fantastic read. Alesia Holliday has crafted a wonderful representation of the world many of us live in nowadays. She presents her story in an interesting format of email between herself and her husband (with narration at the beginning of each chapter to introduce the topic of that chapter). Illnesses, job changes, children, deployments, and much more. It really runs quite a course, and is highly recommended for anyone with a relative in the military, new (or experienced!) military spouse, or just someone who would like some insight into the everyday life of today's military family. Warning however! Be careful drinking hot liquids while reading this book! I have a sweatshirt that took many washings to get the stain out after laughing so hard that I completely lost control of my coffee mug. Alesia has managed to turn some very stressful moments on their ear by relating it through humor. What an extraordinary woman, and a must-have book. Keep them coming!
Wonderful book.......2006-06-23
This was a wonderful book, probably one of my favorites from the summer so far. I loved the way she shared their experience of deployment. I highly recommend this book!!

Falling for a man in uniform can be hard . . .
New York Times bestselling author
Debbie Macomber weaves emotional tales of love and longing. Here is the first of her celebrated NAVY series!
Impulsive, wounded, vulnerable, Lindy Kyle was unprepared for a roommate like Rush Callaghan. Strong, sensitive and sexy, the temporarily dry-docked naval officer was everything she'd ever dreamed of in a man . . . in a husband.
But Rush placed duty to his country above all else. Though he and Lindy were swept away on a tide of passion, he was called back to sea. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder -- but will their marriage survive their partings?

Even if you are a Navy wife - don't bother reading this one.......2005-10-27
Yikes. How did this ever get published? The story line was pitiful and the writing equally bad. As a Navy Wife, I hope there aren't too many readers out there thinking this relates to our lives in ANY way. I rate this 0 stars.
A waste of time and money........2004-05-23
This sounded cute and really could have been. Unfortunately it turned out to be loss. The heroine was an immature brat. The dialogue had very little depth to it.The story line never developed into much of anything. The love scenes were boring. I sure had trouble finishing it but I hate to review something I didn't finish. The only thing positive about it was the hunks in navy whites! (We're a navy family and those uniforms are/were awesome on my husband and son!!)
Clearly one of Ms. Macomber earlier work.......2004-01-03
After reading the "Promise" series, I bacame a fan of Debbie Macomber. When I saw that the "Navy" series was out, I bought "Navy Wife." After getting about two-thirds though the book, I just had to stop due to the fact that it was so bad. Lindy (main female character) has be the selfish character that I read about in the longest time. She is women who recently broke-up with her fiance, then she meet Rush Callaghan, US Navy amd after two weeks she wants to marry him. While Rush is level headed, Lindy just wants her man.
As I stated, I just gave-up on this just due to the fact it was not up to Ms. Macombers usual great story telling.
Cheesy is right, but I wouldn't recommend it........2003-08-04
When I saw this book at the bookstore, I thought it would be a fun read, something different. It was also my first Debbie Macomber book. I was surprised at the good reviews this book got because I found it incredibly boring. I couldn't stand Lindy. She was a spoiled brat and that she fell in love with him so early on in the book only told me she was incredibly immature. I was almost embarrassed for her in the one scene where she kept insisting to him she loved him. I thought she made quite a fool out of herself. And I couldn't help but roll my eyes when she gave him the ultimatum. Rush was alright, but I never really knew what he looked like. He was never really described except for being handsome. Their conversations were shallow as were their lovemaking scenes. I did finish the book (although I'm not sure how) but it was incredibly stupid. I think a much better story could have been written with the same plot. A little deeper dialogue between the two might have helped and possibly a more mature heroine. I hate to judge an author by reading just one book, so I will probably read another of her books because she is quite popular but I hope it will be better than this one was. I got the impression this book was written in about two days given the shallowness of it. With phrases like him leaving work like greased lightening and her asking him if he was king of the universe, it didn't seem like much thought was put into writing this. And her expecting him to give up his job, as if he could just say I quit, was a bit much. Then she said, when she learned he'd stay onboard, that she said she wouldn't be at the pier when he came home but she hadn't said anything about not being at the apartment. And that was a bit ridiculous too. Maybe I expect too much when I'm looking for a good book, but this just didn't cut it. I'm curious though, what Harriet Klausner would say about this book because I follow her reviews and I seem to agree a lot with her assessment of books. Was it just me or was this just a bit too cheesy to be good?
A Cheesy Beach Read.......2003-07-21
Navy Wife, is a must for a day the beach! Debbie Macomber created a perfect man when she wrote about Rush Callahan. Rush is the type that most girls dream of solid,hard-working, honorable ect. Lindy is a immature and bratty. Lindy arrives in Seattle hoping to escape the heatbreak of her hometown ex-boyfriend. She latches onto to Rush right away, swearing undying love two weeks after they met, and begging Rush to marry her as fast as possible! Rush being mature and level headed suggested to Lindy that they wait until he returns from a 6 month tour at sea, Lindy freaks and is so offended because if he loves her enough now, why shouldn't they get married? Rush doesn't want to lose Lindy so he relents and they get married. Rush then leaves on sea duty and trouble ensues. Lindy then realizes that she GASP! might have married Rush on the rebound. Well, what is girl to do? Rush in the meantime is injured at sea and Lindy flies to Hawaii, to deliver a crushing ultimatum to her injured husband. Talk about kicking a dog when he is down! Lindy forces Rush to choose between her and the Navy; he chooses the Navy. Rush returns to his ship to finish out the last 6 weeks of the tour. Lindy grows up within in the last six weeks because when Rush tells Lindy he has thought is over and He'll give up everything he has worked for just so she will be happy. Lindy then tells Rush Oh, I've grown up these past six weeks so you can stay in the Navy. Oh! how sweet! Lindy never realizes just what a good catch a man like Rush is because in the real world they would have gotton a divorce, no man wants to be castrated by his wife! This is a good book for the beach, but remember that this book is soo cheesy it should be read with a box of crackers!
Book Description
Jasa Shaw was a young married Navy wife at the tender age of 18, learning about the Navy via day-to-day experiences. Some of the experiences were positive, some werent. But these experiences helped her to realize that Navy wives are a special breed. The old saying about Navy wives, It is the toughest job in the Navy, seemed so cliché before, but it now rings so true. Navy wives do have a tough job and give up so much for their husbands careers. This book tells some of the good, the bad, and the ugly, though not necessarily in that order. It also contains some good information and ideas for living the Navy lifestyle. Read and laugh along with Jasa as she tells her experiences, which are relatable to every military wifes life, and know that you arent alone!

GREAT FOR WIVES CLUB.......2006-02-28
This book is straight fwd and funny. A must have for any military family. and great for ideas for deployments. I copied some of those for our spouses/wives club and distributed the ideas to the wives, they loved the cute package ideas.
I could relate, and felt her pain! Glad its not just me.
Giggle... Groan... Nod Your Head.......2005-11-17
You gotta love it! Having been in the military, I enjoyed the unique perspective of Jasa Bowser's book. The Life of a Navy Wife... or more appropriately... Helpful Hints for Surviving the Life of a Navy Wife... offered me the opportunity to see the military life from a spouse's point of view. I giggled... I groaned and often nodded my head in agreement. Not only does it offer a sneak peek at the Bowser-Shaw military saga, it also is loaded with hints aimed at making military life easier for the dependent spouse and family. Way to go Jasa. How about a Part II? I'm dying to hear more details of your military life experience!
Excellent Book- The life of a Navy Wife.......2005-11-17
I read this book from cover to cover twice and also purchased it for holiday
gift giving.
Jasa is a writer with much style and honestly...This is one of the best
books that I have read about the Military life, 1st person. And opened my
eyes to the life of any military wife. The other review by Erika L. Eckstrom
,that I read sounded like she was trying to sale her own book or a friends.
There is no reason to go into depth as she did on a review....I strongly
suggest that you read this book for yourself and form you own opinion. But
my opinion on this book is A++A+A++A++A Leah J. Hartman
Letter from the Author .......2005-11-16
I am so sorry to hear this review, the first negative to date. I take each review very seriously, and personally. As this is an account of my life (hence the name, The Life of a Navy Wife.) It is not to be used as a "How To" manual of sorts. It is autobiographical, a personal account of my life and events that have taken place, as it clearly says in the synopsis. I will gladly discuss with you [Erika L. Eckstrom (Washington, DC)] the option of a refund for your disappointment. Please contact me through my website.
On a lighter note, This book recently won 2nd Place at the 2005 Promoting Outstanding Writers Awards Banquet. In judging, it was reviewed by dozens of College Professors locally, along with the other autobiographies in the category, and received rave reviews for its content.
Again, everyone has different opinions and views & I appreciate your honesty. My only thought is that there are less harsh ways to get your point across in a review of a book that didn't meet your expectations. Im sorry my book was not to your liking. I dont expect it to appeal to all. Best Wishes, and good luck finding the book you are looking for.
Little Humor and Little Narrative.......2005-10-28
I bought this book hoping to find a narrative of the Navy Wife experience. Instead I found a book that was more like a guide to live a life just like the author's.
Jasa Bowser-Shaw continually uses the general "we" (women, navy wifes, etc...) instead of "I" when talking about her experiences. Because of this, as well as other techniques in her writing style, the reader is continually distanced from the author. It even feels like the author is distancing herself from her own life. There are very few examples of specific personal experiences with details and backgrounds. For instance on page 9 she comments: "... which I WON'T elaborate on" (Bowser-Shaw, 9). She does this throughout the book. She also does the general "I know this from experince" repeatedly. I really wish she went more in depth so that the reader could identify with her, or at least her narrative voice.
Additionally, I found the sense of humor to be highly gender-biased, cliché, and bland. It was not an amusing read.
There are also many typos and spelling errors.
I strongly suggest that people looking for a true narrative on the Navy Wife lifestyle, with humor and real experiences, look to Barbara Keirsbilck Bennet and her book, "Anchored Nowhere: A Navy Wife's Story." It is a well written and very personal account of her life, filled with even the most intimate and embarrassing moments.
Book Description
What's a girl to do? Her husband ships out on an aircraft carrier for months on end leaving this naïve newlywed to deal not only with boredom and loneliness, but with psychotic house cats and uppity appliances as well! When Will My Ship Come In? The Misadventures of a Navy Wife is a hilarious romp through one woman's encounter with the United States Navy and how she lived to tell about it.
Customer Reviews:
It's mildly entertaining. Mildly at best........2007-10-01
The book is very short, and I did not find that I related to the woman at all. This would not matter if I felt I learned something from the book or was entertained, which I did not and was not. Quick, light reading but I did not love it.
COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!!.......2006-12-09
I couldn't put down "When Will My Ship Come In" until I finished it! Perfectly delightful! LOVED IT! It should be required reading for all Navy wives and future Naval wives!!!
Are you married to a military man? Have you ever wondered what it would be like?.......2006-05-01
Linda A. Krueger has written a book, "When Will My Ship Come In? The Misadventures of a Navy Wife," which showcases the emotional ups and downs of life as the wife of a United States Navy Enlisted man. Having grown up in San Diego, California, where it's rumored that you can find a Naval installation or two, did nothing to prepare a na?ve twenty-two year old for the challenges that faced her once she exchanged vows with her sailor, Dan.
"When Will My Ship Come In? The Misadventures of a Navy Wife" is the true story of Linda's experiences during her time as a Navy wife. Taking a cue from Erma Bombeck, one of Linda's favorite author's, Linda has injected wit and laughter into even her most painful trials, making her book one that will resonate not only with military wives, but for those who have always wondered what it would be like to be married to a military man.
Included in her book are actual excerpts from letters Linda received from her husband while he was deployed. During the eight years of marriage spent serving in the Navy in Jacksonville, Florida, Linda and her husband faced several intense situations. During the first deployment of their marriage, Dan was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga when they were called into action after terrorists hijacked the luxury liner Achille Lauro, then killed one of the passengers. Then, during his next deployment, and only five months after the Achille Lauro incident, the Saratoga was called into action again when Libya's Mohammar Khadafi drew his "Line of Death" in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. In our nation's ongoing fight in the war on terror, it is difficult to find anyone who has not been touched by it in a personal way. Linda's touching, yet humorous treatment of such serious circumstances can help bring a much needed rest from the stress on our lives.
Linda's love and admiration for the military, and especially military spouses, is quite evident in "When Will My Ship Come In? The Misadventures of a Navy Wife." The courage that our men and women in uniform display goes without question. Now, through Linda's firsthand experiences with the US Navy, we are all able to see the tremendous courage and dedication that those who are left at home display, quietly, every day.
Now, twelve years after leaving the US Navy, Linda lives with her family in her husband's hometown in Wisconsin's Northwoods.
Great Book.......2004-11-12
Realistic, hilarious, but true situations of military life. A must read book for a new Navy wife.
Delightfully Humorous and Witty.......2004-11-03
As a fellow navy wife with my husband on his 1st deployment, I thouroughly related to the author. She made me laugh aloud and cry some silent tears. It is worth reading again and again. Wheather your navy or not, you will enjoy this charming tale and see a side of the navy you don't often hear about!
