This book contains the last 2 stories of the wonderful O'Hurley siblings.
In Skin Deep you have the story of Chantal the oldest triplet. She is the beautiful Hollywood actress who finds herself being stalked and harrassed by an unknown over eager fan. She reluctantly hires Quinn Doran to protect her and help find out who is messing with her. Quinn soon discovers her beauty is more than just Skin Deep.
In without a Trace we finally find out what older brother Trace O'Hurley has been up to all these years. Dr. Gillian Fitzpatrick offfers him $100,000 to help her find her brother and neice who have been kidnapped for their scientific knowledge of a project called Horizon. Gillian and Trace have an adventure ahead of them. Finally there is an O'Hurley reunion at the end.
This is a good early Nora Roberts book. I think you will enjoy it.

I guess I should have read the review of this 'new release' of an older (2) novel(s).
I love Nora Roberts, but she's so much better than this now! I've grown with her over the years and was a little disappointed that I fell for the new cover, thinking a new book. A waste of money for any Nora Roberts fan.

GRAND VISION/HARD VIEWING.......2004-02-28
An enormous and fasinating series of discussions surrounding "raced looking" in America's history of photography is central to this group of essays by many of the cultural critics working today. A massive tome with outstanding visuals, some not seen in the exhibition, provide extensive background and analysis to the area of how race has intervened in American culture today. For museums who felt the race subject had been addressed in the 90s post-Quincentennary exhibition, it is obvious that much more in depth examination is necessary and relevant. An outstanding effort for a museum catalogue and exhibition. All should be commended. Required reading for anyone working and teaching in cultural studies, ethnic studies, humanities, and the arts.

Ok so we have a reporter who is supposed to get a story on an recluse. A woman who is the recluse that does not want to share here story. All in the back ground of a mountain hike. The reporter is tenacious and the recluse is indifferent. On the journey of a week long hike they find common ground and try to outsmart each other as to if the reporter will get the story or not. In this case the journey was enlightening for both of them. Ok book

Ms. White has a uncanny talent of envokng emotions from her readers.
I like the "battle of trust" she has in every book...the suprising thing is that each of her characters is different.

Enjoyable story.......2007-06-17
I enjoyed both the storyline and the character development in this book. I can't say I was initially intrigued with the idea of a journalist following her intended interview into the woods, but the story turned out to be much better than I expected. The two women, Jordan and Reese, became people I cared about and I found myself emotionally involved and rooting for them to work out their difficulties.
I appreciate Kendra White's light touch (excuse the pun)with sex scenes and look forward to reading more of her work!
Look below the surface.......2007-05-14
Skin Deep is another Kenna White romance, but there is more to this story than just two women meeting and developing an attraction for each other. And this isn't just a story about not judging someone by appearances. The scars that Reece wears in her soul are much deeper and worse than the ones in her skin. The book's title indicates that there is more to a person than what is on the suface, but going deeper than that often reveals complexities beyond imagination. The book deals with issues of trust, honor and loyalty. However, all of this is woven into a story that never becomes pedantic. This is a case where you may learn something without having to work at it. That alone makes it worth reading.
Best Book Yet.......2007-04-07
It is wonderful to see an author grow into her craft and sharpen her storytelling skills. Kenna White has done just that with her newest release, Skin Deep. This is her best written book to date with fleshed out characters that have real depth.
Reece McAllister ended a high-powered journalism career abruptly, and Jordan Griffin, magazine journalist, is tasked with finding out why. Jordan is forced to take the assignment because everyone else at the magazine has failed to obtain the story. To score the interview, Jordan makes a couple of deceptive moves and ends up in a remote area of the Olympic Peninsula following Reece. Jordan, ill-equipped for camping, continues to trail Reece further into the wilderness without any back-up plan. As the plot unfolds Jordan and the reader become curious as to why the once renowned journalist is now a recluse.
White creates a compelling and enigmatic character with Reece, and her depiction of her as a nature photographer is brilliant. We see the classical beauty of nature juxtaposed with the superficial standards that society sets for us, especially women, and it is eye-opening.
White has matured as a storyteller. The sexual tension is slowly and deliciously drawn out. She is true to her characters, giving them attributes that complement the plot. Skin Deep is a totally satisfying romance, and one that should not be missed.

A Bunch of Hype.......2007-08-31
If you think you feel bad with eczema, just wait until you read this book! As a life long sufferer from this chronic skin ailment, with episodes coming and going, I am currently suffering from one of the worst episodes I've ever experienced. This book would make any sufferer feel even worse, if they didn't have a good basic core knowledge of the disease and it's symptoms. The authors would have you think that the patient's lack of loving parenting is the cause of your problem, among other of their "causes". The fact that this could not be further from the truth automatically debunks the rest of the "helpful" information in this tome of trival! While relaxation therapies and being aware of one's self are excellent advices no matter what the ailment, to place the blame on the patient's problems on the patient is like blaming a baby for contracting cancer. These authors should be ashamed of themselves. It's true - some people will do anything to see their names in print and sell a few books. Sure wish I would have checked this book out at the library rather than wasting good money on a bunch of hogwash!
A factor in a new direction for my life.......2007-07-05
I checked this book out from the library when I had the most horrible eczema outbreak of my life: sores up and down my arms and legs, peeling of the skin three layers down on my hands. My doctors were useless.
This book was a part of a turning point for my life - reading what it had to say about the psychological origins of skin conditions prompted me to take action that improved my life on all levels.

I was extremely pleased with content and recommendations in Skin Deep. The author is knowledgeable of a variety of skin conditions and their resulting emotional attachments or reactions. For the person needing relief, there is such with numerous relaxation strategies that are actually helpful and can get you started Day 1. I highly recommend this book.
Great Self Help Book.......2006-03-09
Great Self Helf Book which gives you wonderful insights into the emotional factors of your condition. Let's suppose skin conditions are partially genetical, partially caused by wrong food intake, partially caused by external conditions (wheather, dust mites, etc...) and partially caused by emotional/stress factors (some say ALL skin conditions are caused by inner anger). I suggest you take an integral approach to treat your condition and optimize your food intake and do whatever you can about external conditions. This will take the balance of your condition into the right direction. The next step is to explore the emotional/stress factors of your skin condition. That is what this book is great for!
What advantages and safeties does your condition give you? What is the condition doing for you? Why are YOU affected? Why THERE and why NOW? This book provides great methods (a comprehensive list of most common needs the skin is trying to acquire via its condition; great excercises in self-knowledge; creating a Time Line to effectively understand why your skin condition is worse or better at particular moments; why particular places at your body are affected; what it does for you (what safeties and advantages); and let's you think about what if it got better or worse) to explore the emotional cause of your skin condition. This is the first step and understanding will already bring you towards curing of your skin condition! The next part of the book gives techniques to get yourself into a healing state which will give the next boost towards healing. It also outlines what professional help can do for you.
I eventually embraced a hypnotherapist into my healing process. My own condition is moving towards complete recovery (full body eczema). This book is a must read if you want to be cured!
Get this and get better!.......2005-07-16
Whenever my eczema flared up, my friends would tell me I'm too stressed out. I didn't feel that way, not much more stressed out than usual, so the timing of the flare ups and the stress level at that time was sometimes confusing.
After reading this book, however, I recognized it's much more than just the simple stress - more deeply rooted issues I've apparently held for a long time. I had vaguely suspected this may be the case, but didn't know how/where to start. This book gave me the guidance to do that on my own.
I agree with 3 other reviewers completely. I no longer feel helpless and scared when I can feel my skin starting to flare up. I am not yet free from eczema, but knowing what may be the underlying cause of it, and how to calm it down, I have much stronger sense of being in control of my skin, body and my life.

Honestly, for people like me, who have thought about a tattoo for years, not seriusly enough to do it, but not with so little importance that the idea is forgoten fast, this is a great start. If you have had many doubts about tattoos in general, this is a good start, and an interesting reading anyway.
An excellent first book about tattooing.......2007-04-06
I had just gotten my first tattoo when I noticed something strange inside of me shifting and wanted to understand. This book was so excellent as a first book in understanding the history, how ink gets into the demis layer of the skin, how to choose a tattoo image and artist, tattoo symbology basics (this author wrote a whole other book on it, but I like this condenced version), aftercare, and much more.
Although I have purchased other books that delve into one region or another of tattooing, I still refer back to this book all the time.
I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone considering a tattoo, or who has recently been tattooed for the first time. Even old-timers who wish to explain to others or those wishing to understand this cultural phenomenon will appreciate this book.

Kabuki Is More Than A Comic.......2007-04-01
This is my favorite comic. This was my intro to Kabuki. I was in the mood for something different, saw an ad for this on the back of one comic or another and checked it out at the local direct sales store. WOW. Yes its weirdly told compared to the ordinary comic book and having to move the pages around to read all of it was odd but I loved it. I thought Frank Miller hit the high point in comics when he did The Dark Night back in the 80's. This just blew that away.
You probably have to be an adult to get all the nuances but even then there are layers within layers here.
The best graphic novel is Skin Deep!.......2004-07-04
David Mack's beautiful art combined with his wonderful storytelling made this Amazing book come to life. This book deals with Kabuki, a "defective" agent of a secret assassination team called the "Noh" (a group of mysterious women who wear masks who protect the innocent from unknown dangers) being in Control Corps mental institute. She is locked up in a room which is to her, constantly changing color and morphing, due to hallucination from drugged foods, only allowed to come out for meetings with doctors, and refuses to speak without her "face" (which is really her kabuki mask, but she feels the mask gives her strength and confidence, and in some psychotic way, actually believes the mask is her face).
This book is much more than your average comic book will ever be. The art is amazing (compared to most of today's comic books), the story is captivating, and I guarantee your eyes will be glued to every page! This fully painted, amazingly written book deserves 1,000 stars and an A++++. It's mysterious, beautiful, strange, confusing, and twisted, but you will definitely enjoy this book if you are looking for a new genre of comic book. You will never read a graphic novel quite like this one. If you are a fan of the timeless graphic novel "Elektra: Assassin", than this book, Kabuki: skin deep, is definitely for you!
Perhaps the most interestingly mysterious part of this book is a person Kabuki receives messages from, through a vent in the ceiling of her room on small pieces of origami paper, named Akemi. Akemi sends kabuki these origami animals, telling her not to fall for any of the guards' tricks. "She" (or whoever this "person" may be) tells Kabuki not to eat or sleep in order to save herself. But Kabuki begins to wonder why Akemi is giving her such helpful advice. Is Akemi a true friend? Is Akemi a character made up by one of the doctors trying to get Kabuki to cooperate? Is Akemi one of the Noh operatives coming to break Kabuki out of her cell? Or, is Akemi just an imaginary friend fabricated by Kabuki's own mind to help her cope with the hardships of being in a mental institute.
Find out when you read Skin Deep, the best, most entertaining graphic novel I have ever read. This book deserves the highest rating of any graphic novel. It is truly amazing. I have never read a book like this. I read (not just the words in the bubbles but the childish, autobiographical words and doodles of "kabuki" scribbled across the page and in the corners of) every page of this book.

*Look for the page where there is a statue marked "foam rubber statue, as not to hurt myself or others" to get an idea of what I am talking about*. It's as if "Kabuki" is making commentary on the world around her and we get to see every strangely child-like bit of it!
If you liked Elektra: assassin, Evil Ernie: Youth gone wild, or
Hellboy: the chained coffin and others, then you will love this book. If you are already interested in Kabuki, I recommend the slightly less entertaining comic book, Billy Tucci's "Shi" (visit www.crusadefinearts.com for information on Shi.) I hope this review has helped you, and I hope you will read Kabuki: Skin deep.
One that you'll remember.......2003-11-19
I look for two things in a comic. The first is strong visuals - good drawing, deep imagery, skill with materials, composition, and lots more.
The second is optional if #1 is good enough: story. David Mack gives everything. The story is good, in a Femme Nikita Japonaise Noveau kind of way. The art is all I look for. It is dense - many marks carry different parts of the narrative. It is skilled - watercolor, pen, photo, I lost track of the amount of process that goes into each page. Text, imagery, and typography interact without clear bounds. There's just so much that I can't remember it all, so I have to it over and over. (That's a good thing.)
Not for kids, but not everything has to be. Not 'adult' either. Just really good. At least, I think so.
One small warning: not all of Mack's Kabuki books sustain this level of visual intensity. If that is your reason for buying a book, this one's good. Only some of Mack's Kabuki books conduct this much power. Well, he's only human.
Poetry, Psychology, and Perfection!.......2001-01-24
In the previous two books in the Kabuki series David Mack has been exploring the effect on the lifes of those around Kabuki of the events in Volume 1. Here in Volume 4; Skin Deep we finally return to the heroine of the title. This book, while ostensibly a superhero comic book is in fact an excellent combination of so many things. This book brings together great storytelling, excellent characterisation, beautiful artwork, poetry and psychology. We learn more about the fate of the great character Mack has created in Kabuki. While not as long, or indeed as involving as the first work, this book has a very different feel to it. In this work we get drawn into the psychology of the women involved, and into the raw emotions they experience. There is no middle ground in this book. I strongly recommend this book BUT you do have to read the previous works in the series. This is not a good starting point. But you should make the effort. Go back to the start. Work your way here. It is worth it.

This book is the product of what happens when we can tell the truth. It was a real eye-opener and consoling in one. It let you know that you are not alone in the battle of dealing with race everyday. In some way or another every story will speak to you. Every author's attempt to define their truth will help you to better understand your own reality. Great book even if you may not agree with every point of view contained within it's pages, you'll appreciate the effort to convey the story, to say the least!
Why Is There Only One Review of This Book?.......2002-06-26
In the very public work that I do, I too often hear, as I just heard yesterday, well-meaning white people say, "The way to take care of diversity is to never mention it again."
And it is this kind of message that reminds me that we have a ways to go in race relations.
This book is a collection of stories from famous women, both white and black, about their experiences with race.
While every chapter had me deeply moved, I must say that the chapter titled, "Contents Under Pressure: White Woman/Black History," by Catherine Clinton, was the most moving.
This is a story about a white woman who teaches African-American History.
This is, a reverse discrimination story that has value for everyone to read. By her name, and her profession, she is assumed to be African-American. But she is Caucasian.
Her published work has led to many invitations to speak on race relations.
But, when they meet her, in person, and see that she is not African-American, things change.
And she had to put in a tremendous amount of time, to show that she is here to stay, despite the resistence of others.
In the end, this professor taught her students that the thickness of your skin, and not its color is a useful measure for success.
This is a professor whose mission lives on through her students.
I invite everyone male or female, of all races to read this book, as you think of yourself as a fly on the wall.
You will grow, beyond your wildest dreams.
A perspective on race.......1997-12-19
As we begin to approach the next century, race is still an important issue that should not be ignored or denied. As we live in a multiracial society, it is important to take time out and listen to ourselves and others. This is a provocative book that should be read by all women who take the time to intellectually consider themselves and their role as women and mothers, sisters, neigbors, and lovers. How will we teach our children and eachother to consider race? These essays bring forth some harsh realizations of the boundaries that truly separate black and white women and what must be overcome if we truly want to unite. It is a good dose of reality that many of us would benefit from not only reading, but thinking about and discussing. The truth is awfully hard to swallow.

Dr. Eskenazi, a nationally recognized expert on breast reconstruction after cancer, began her medical career believing that she would become a psychiatrist. When I had my plastic surgery, I knew I just wanted to look better. Therefore I was quite surprised by all the changes in my life that occurred after the surgery. This book answered many of my questions about my confusing and exciting experiences by putting plastic surgery in the larger context of personal transformation and ritual within a community. My hat is off to Dr. Eskenazi for framing the issue of plastic surgery as larger than the simple quest for beauty. Using her firsthand experience as a plastic surgeon, she eloquently makes the point--more is going on here, there is substance beneath the surface. As growing numbers of people go under the knife and afterwards try to make sense of their experience, books like this will be sorely needed.
A radical re-visioning.......2007-08-22

Here is a bold and startlingly new idea: plastic surgery as a chosen rite of passage, in which the woman making the choice is willing to undergo an ordeal for the purposes of sself-transformation. It has taken me by surprise and made me question many of my own attitudes. Bleck. Stay away from this one........2007-08-03
While not nearly as bad as the previous arc, SINS PAST, the story in SKIN DEEP is still very poor. It focuses on some obscure character who hasn't existed in prior to this arc. Yet, this new character who has never been mentioned all of a sudden shows up and goes on a personal vendetta, and the target is Peter Parker. The villain in this arc seems like a bad rip-off of Molten Man, an older villain who dates back to the Ditko issues of Amazing Spider-Man. Overall, the story is dull, unimaginative, and predictable. The only reason you might want to pick this up is so you know why Peter, MJ, and May move into a new residence right after this story...
Former friendly acquaintence, now another bad guy.... .......2007-01-22
From the very beginning, you could predict the story along with the cliche flashback of Peter reminicing on his teen years as the bullied geek. This time a fellow geek is introduced. You feel sorry for him, but you realize early he is another cross that Peter willingly bares. I gotta say I really love the artwork over John Romita's work. I was kinda getting annoyed with the occasional, out-of-place anorexically skinny people (including Spidey!).
Artwork is an upgrade while the plot was downgraded. After the last issues being so powerful I guess you're due for a "relaxing" issue. This issue didn't move me in any way except for the improved artwork.
JMS should've quit Spidey while he was ahead.......2006-03-09
This, like all of JMS' Spider-Man stories since "Sins Past" has been disapointing. It is not completely unreadable, and I continue to enjoy Mike Deodanto's art since he came back onto the scene, but compared to the the the great Spidey tales out there, this one is very missable. If you're new to Spider-Man check out Essential Marvel Team Up to see some great Spidey, or the first few trades of the current run with JMS and Romita Jr. they're a lot better than this one focusing on some minor character from Parker's past (who I don't beleive we, the reader, have ever met before). It starts out interesting exploring what could've happened if Peter wasn't so responsible, but quickly turns into cliched hero vs. villain fare.
Whatever happened to the guy who replaced Peter Parker as the geek in high school?.......2005-08-15
The four-part "Skin Deep" storyline in "The Amazing Spider-Man" is a tale that bring's Peter Parker's past together with Spider-Man's present. Collected in Volume 8 of these trade paperback reprints, the story is written by J. Michael Straczynski with pencils by Mike Deodato, inked by Joe Pimentel and colored by Matt Milla, the flashback sequences are penciled by Mark Brooks, inked by Jamie Mendoza, and colored by Brian Reber. The contrast between the past and present might be too much, but you have to admit that you can tell them apart as you go along.
The story begins with Peter late for school and substituting for another teacher and dealing with an unruly student. That he looks out the window and sees Charlie Weiderman. Sudden we are back to when Peter was in high school and Charlie became the new kid in class. You see, "The unwritten law of the classroom is that the school geek only gets a break when and if an even bigger geek moves into the neighborhood." You guessed it: Charlie is that geek, and when Peter finds he is no longer low man on the school totem pole, he makes sure he has nothing to do with the new kid. Peter was ashamed of what he did that day, so when Charlie shows up to ask a favor he is more than willing to listen.
Charlie wants to get a big military contract for coming up with a new type of body armor. It would have to be from some kind of porous polymer compound that could cover every part of a soldier but still let oxygen breath through. That last part is what is stumping Charlie, along with something to absorb the energy of the incoming bullets. Charlie thinks the answer could be vibranium, the expensive natural material found only in the kingdom of Wakanda, soif he uses Peter's name as a reference when he goes to an interview with Tony Stark. Peter agrees and Charlie thanks him, saying that he has always been a friend. But when Peter remembers high school he knows that he was anything but a friend to Charlie.
Stark gives Charlie a check, rounded off to the nearest hundred thousand, basically because Peter wrote a letter of recommendation. Peter shows up to help with the experiment but discovers Charlie is taking a dangerous shortcut, and if you do not know what is going to happen then you simply have not read most of the previous 514 issues of "The Amazing Spider-Man." Peter walks away from the experiment and once again we have a new supervillain for Spider-Man created by an explosion tampering with science. Peter tried to help, but no good deed goes unpunished in his world and Charlie still wants Peter's help, or else he is going to kill him and everyone around him.
Stracynski maintains the present and past threads of the story line throughout the four parts of "Skin Deep," and while I am not sure what I think about going back and rewriting that part of Peter Parker's past, it certainly makes sense to be reminded of the geek that was left behind when the radioactive spider bit him. This is not a great storyline, but it is solid enough and after "Sins Past" (Volume 8) it is certainly a breath of fresh air. Besides, "Skin Deep" ends with a major change in the life of the Parkers and anything that sets up Aunt May taking on Wolverine is a good thing in my book.

Another knockout thriller.......2007-06-19
Skin Deep is an exciting medical thriller that never slows down due to the frantic actions of the lead female antagonist. The story, though, belongs to David whose efforts to hide his "secret" provide constant suspense and surprise. The supporting cast augments the plot with strong characterizations that move the story along. The deliberate fast pace creates an exhilarating thriller that readers are sure to love.

Four stars as the book was not as much of a "thriller" as I expected. Easily read and put togheter.Content flows nicely. Certainly well worth what it cost and I will read this author again. Read the book in one night.

What a thriller this book was, fast paced, many twist and turns. i could not stop reading this book. Its scarey because its the type of thing that could really happen. i cant wait for Clem's next offering. I would recommend this book to anyone. WOW!!!
Hitchcock meets Steven King.......2006-12-18
Skin Deep is one of those books you can't put down. Mr.Clem has combined the suspense of Alfred Hitchcock with an eerie flavor of Steven King. Dr. David pins his hopes on his great invention only to see them go up in flames. Then there's Jane...or is that her real name. You love her in the begining, only to despise her in the end. If you like medical mystery novels, Skin Deep is an excellant read.

This book was exceptional. I found it interesting from the very first chapter. The plot is well thought out, and the author keeps the pace swift. I look forward to reading other books from Bill Clem soon.
