Book Description
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is internationally regarded as one of the most brilliant and influential rabbis of our time. He has been lauded by Time magazine as a “once-in-a-millennium scholar” and by Ted Koppel of Night Line as “one of the very few wise men that I’ve ever met.”
Arthur Kurzweil—himself a Jewish scholar, author, teacher, and publisher—has been a disciple of Rabbi Steinsaltz’s for over 25 years, as well as the Rabbi’s designated chauffer in the United States. While stuck in countless traffic jams and attending the Rabbi’s lectures at universities, government agencies, synagogues and seminars, Arthur Kurzweil has had the rare opportunity of personally learning from his inspired teacher and has become intimately familiar with the Rabbi’s wisdom and teachings.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining, but not quite inspiring.......2007-08-25
This is a wonderful collection of anecdotes by Mr. Kurzweil, a wonderful teacher in his own right. However he just doesn't quite communicate what he finds so inspiring about his own teacher, Rabbi Steinsaltz. The book left me a bit frustrated and wanting more examples of those teachings.
He truly got himself a teacher .......2007-05-31
We are instructed by 'Pirke Avot' to get ourselves a Rabbi, a teacher, a spiritual guide. Arthur Kurzweil took this teaching seriously and has for many years questioned, dialogued with and learned with his own chosen teacher. In this very rich and instructive intellectual and spiritual adventure story Kurzweil tells of his meetings and talks with his revered teacher, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz.
Kurzweil also tells his own story of return to Judaism, and something of Rabbi Steinsaltz's story. Rabbi Steinsaltz whose father was a kibbutznik himself returned to religious Judaism at the age of seventeen. The fact that he went on to became the great 'talmid chacham',maker and presenter to the Jewish world of a remarkable new translation of the Talmud , and is today considered one of the greatest of all Jewish spiritual leaders is devotedly described in this book.
Arthur Kurzweil in searching for a teacher volunteered to be of any kind of help he could to the Steinsaltz organization. He was given the task of meeting Rabbi Steinsaltz at the airport and chauffering him during his visits to New York. For twenty- five years Kurzweil has chauffered and gained valuable hours of discussion with Rabbi Steinsaltz.
However even before meeting Steinsaltz , Kurzweil was on a path of returning to traditional Judaism. His genealogical researches which are pioneering and central were first undertaken before his meeting with Rabbi Steinsaltz. And this though Rabbi Steinsaltz subsequently greatly encouraged him in these researches, insisting upon the spiritual importance of each person knowing their own roots. Out of this knowledge Rabbi Steinsaltz feels there will certainly come deeper religious obligation.
Arthur Kurzweil in this book is constant in his praise of his teacher. This focusing on his teacher in a way leads him to underplay his own great contributions to the 'Jewish world' As editor he has helped bring to the public many outstanding works of Judaica including works of extremely great spiritual value , such as Yitzhak Buxbaum's 'Jewish Spiritual Practices' Nachum Amsel's work on Jewish Morality and Ethics and Seth Kaddish's work on Jewish Prayer.
Kurzweil describes Rabbi Steinsaltz's meetings with Jewish intellectuals and writers in New York upon the appearance in English of two volumes of his Talmud translation. In citing Steinsaltz's answers to some of these writers' questions he in a sense clarifies a good part of the meaning of the Steinsaltz enterprise. Rabbi Steinsaltz sees the Jewish people , or the greatest share of them as having lost a vital part of their body and soul. They do not know their own religious tradition. In a sense his translation of the Talmud is meant to help them restore that soul.
In other words Steinsaltz is not simply a rabbi for individuals but for the Jewish people as a whole. Here Kurzweil too chronicles Steinsaltz's connection with Habad ( His wife comes from a Habad family) and the whole outreach effort in the Jewish world. But Kurzweil makes it clear that Steinsaltz does not put himself under the rubric of any particular Jewish group but rather works for the Jewish people as a whole.
Kurzweil is not simply a student. He is a vivid and active admirer. He has helped publish much of Rabbi Steinsaltz's work in English. Kurzweil in searching for guidance and wisdom in raising his children also turned to Rabbi Steinsaltz and was helped. The Rabbi advised him among other things that teaching of children need not be confined to what they literally understand.
While it is impossible to question Kurzweil's admiration and devotion to his teacher it is possible to ask whether he is not a bit too uncritical. Even Moshe Reibenu is after all seen in the Jewish tradition as having his faults. And it might even be said that there is something 'non- Jewish' in the kind of total worship various Hasidic groups have displayed towards their 'tzaddikim'.
Yet it must be said that Kurzweil is a devoted student, a person of great intelligence who in his dialogue with Rabbi Steinsaltz also provides knowledge and insight. There may not be equality between student and teacher yet what is felt here is a great mutual respect. And my sense is that Rabbi Steinsaltz has a great appreciation of Arthur Kurzweil as more than simply chauffeur and student, but as true friend and 'mensch'.
I loved reading this book and I think that all those who care about Jewish learning and life, will also do so.
Exceptional Book.......2007-04-12
Anyone who reads this book will find him or herself to be very fortunate indeed to go along for the ride. I have read numerous books, but never one so powerful. It evokes such a wide range of emotions with a turn of a page. You'll find yourself laughing out loud, with tears in your eyes, perplexed or contemplative. Once you finish, you'll want to read it again. Don't be surprised if you find yourself quoting this book to family and friends. I highly recommend it!
A Must Rread.......2007-03-15
This is a book you can hardly put down once you start reading it - the author is so authentic and gives us a personal insight into the life of Rabbi Steinsaltz. Recommend reading The Thirteenth Petaled Rose before or after reading this book.
Spread the Truth.......2007-01-16
Kurzweil opens with a very heartfelt recounting of his return to Judaism and his personal path which led him to Rabbi Steinsaltz. From there the chapters fly by effortlessly, partitioned in small chapters of which each is it's own midrash, giving each of us something to reflect upon and discuss. This is for everyone who wants to know more about not only Steinsaltz, but the beauty and wisdom of the Jewish faith.

incredibly powerful and eloquent book.......2002-08-11
This is the second of a four volume set. I'm on the last one. They are all incredibly good. Perhaps the best books I've read in my life, and I've read roughly 25 books on Buddhism, Christianity, new age scientific, and spiritual subjects over the last 3-4 years. I've never read a four volume set of anything in my life.
In general each of her books is better than the previous, presumably because she is becoming a better "channel." This second book is notably better written than the first, but I wouldn't skip the first.
Its a very improbable story, her story. Regardless of whether you believe it, the eloquence of the prose and the spiritual message are incredibly powerful. To make a point, not intending to denigrate Patricia's previous proffession in any way, I will say, "you will eventually come to realize that it would be impossible for a medical transcriptionist in Boise to write these books."
You can go home again--to your real life between the worlds........1999-03-08
Improbable as is the thesis of EAGLES OF THE NEW DAWN--incredible as is its alleged origin on the Blue Crystal Planet orbiting the star Arcturus--this is a book that (like SONGS OF THE ARCTURIANS) I find myself returning to again and again, almost as if I were coming home. Through some wizardry of stylistic innovation--which she suggests has simply to do with their being of an extraterrestrial nature--these otherworldly songs of Patricia Pereira do contain, just as they are supposed to, the vibration of long-forgotten but utterly familiar love between the planets.
Full of Inspiration, Magic, and Revelation.......1999-02-13
Patricia Pereira's books, The Arcturian Star Chronicles, are absolutely incredible on many levels. Eagles Of The New Dawn is the second volume of the series. It is written in the most beautiful, innovative language that one can imagine. Reading this book is like riding a magic carpet through the stars as Patricia transports you with her powerful, lyrical images. It is rare to find such startlingly original use of the English language. Embedded in this wonderful imagery are spiritual and practical messages for an awakening humanity ("eagles of the new dawn"). There is much wisdom revealed here for those ready to move to higher levels of consciousness. As one is engaged with this book, you feel yourself gently drawn into a heightened dimension. This very special book propels you into sacred space. Patricia Pereira is a yet to be discovered master writer of our time. This book is a special treat that you won't want to miss.

Book Description
They are perhaps the most dangerous men in New Orleans, skilled swordsmen who play by no rules but their own -- heroes to many, wicked to some, irresistible to the women they love . . .
Lisette Moisant is a widow, courtesy of the swordsmanship of Caid O'Neill, one of the city's legendary maitres d'armes. He bested her loathsome husband in a duel, but now she is a pawn of schemers who wish to steal her fortune and see her dead. It is Caid to whom she turns for protection, and guilt leaves him no recourse but to agree to Lisette's request.
But soon a whispering campaign is being waged against them, suggesting the two plotted to kill Lisette's husband all along, that she is a woman of loose morals and he is nothing short of a murderer. In a society where reputation is everything, the scandal and accusations threaten Lisette and Caid with ruin, and the person responsible will stop at nothing until they have paid with their lives.

Dawn Encounter.......2007-02-10
Jennifer Blake is absolutely a wonderful author! I can be taken away like I'm living through all of the characters. This master of arms series is great!
OUTSTANDING!.......2007-02-09
As usual, one of the best authors out there has put out ANOTHER great book. Don't miss the chance to read this book!! Her characters are so real, and gripping. From the first page, I couldn't put it down.
Keep them Coming Jennifer!
Outstanding romance! .......2006-03-12
I loved this story. The characters are fantastic and I really enjoyed this story and I think Jennifer did a masterful job with building the romance and introducing and forshadowing the stories of her next heros. I have to say it was refreshing that it wasn't instant sexual gratification, but a building of the two together. Caid being so honorable that I could not help but love him and Lisette so indepenant and head strong. It was brilliant. I found the anticipation for when the characters would come together exciting. And I fell in love with her Masters at arms. I'm so looking forward to the other men's story and meeting some more in her next works. I just adored these characters.
I read some of the other reviews that weren't so nice. I'm can't imagine how it was boring. Everything was so vibrant and alive. I found this very refreshing and I couldn't get enough. Frankly I'm tired of the jumping right into a sexual relationship type stories that they are getting mundane and typical. This had a plot, motives and forshadowing of this story and of future stories to come. I couldn't have been happier or more impressed with the writing. The style is very romatnic and beautiful and goes beautifully with the time period.
I only wish I didn't have to wait another year for the next story! That's my biggest gripe, but I'll be patient I have no choice. :)

Ms. Blake Bring Historic New Orleans To Life!.......2006-02-14
Caid O'Neill is a master at swordsmanship and he has just fought a dual with Eugene Moisant killed the black-heart that was responsible for the death of Caid's sister. This one action is going to have repercussions that even Caid could not imagine. One night he comes across the widow Moisant. She is in danger of dying. He is drawn to Lisette and when she requests later that Caid protect her from her father-in-law, Caid reluctantly agrees. But when the whispering begins and the campaign to smear Lisette's name not to mention turn Lisette against Caid starts to take shape, will Caid and Lisette's connection be strong enough weather the storm that is about to consume them?
This was a fairly decent read although it seemed unbalanced at times. I would have like to see a bit more dialogue between the main characters. The main focus of this read seemed to be on Caid and the Maitres d'armes, which is interesting, but it overwhelmed the romance. Ms. Blake has brought historic New Orleans to life with her latest story.

Book Description
In 1969, the author met a man at a movie theater in Caracas and began a friendship lasting four months. Three years later, this same "man" greeted the author as he was taken on board the Pleiadean ship for the first time. Castillo was later to board space ships four more times over two years. A highly respected engineer, known for his genuine credulity, he dramatically changed his life to research these amazing encounters. His true story of how events unfolded--from the ship rising out of a lake to the "people" who inhabit these vessels (and their control of natural forces)--all lead to a compelling conclusion: the universe is teeming with intelligent, conscious beings.

A must read for UFO study.......2001-03-20
This books describes in detail the author's experience in dealing with UFO. Not only does it reveal many intriguing ideas, but also it encourages further investigation.
Enrique also suggests that "groups led by super-endowed individuals who claim to have links with UFO entities... I ask myself how best to stop these evil leaders, who are so capable of corrupting people's minds and of thoroughly brain-washing them into terribly wrong beliefs. Liberation from such fanatics can occur only when we use our free will, powers of inquiry and discrimination, and conscience to recognize, fight against, and defeat all falsity and deceit." The negative evil force should be taken care of.
Ps. Rumor has it that the English translation may be modified by secret agency of the US. Anyone has read the original version?

Book Description
The Bestselling author probes reports of alien visitations and other strange phenomena.
When bestselling writer Colin Wilson met Harvard psychiatrist John Mack at a conference in 1995, he was propelled on a journey of discovery into one of the most daunting mysteries of our time--the UFO phenomenon. Mack told Wilson of his work with people who believed they had been abducted by "aliens," and this conversation launched Wilson on a full-scale investigation into everything he could unearth about mysterious and bizarre events related to "alien" visitations. Groundbreaking and compelling, Alien Dawn describes Wilson's own attempt to make sense of a vast body of documented research involving strange and unexplained phenomena, including poltergeists, lake monsters, ancient folklore, time slips, out-of-body experiences, mystical awareness, and psychic travel to other worlds. He studied the accounts of Uri Geller and Andrija Puharich, who were convinced they had been chosen by aliens to deliver a momentous message to earth. He probed into people's claims that they had experienced contact with beings possessing supernormal powers possibly from other dimensions of space--or even time. The result is a vast, complex jigsaw puzzle of encyclopedic dimensions--the most comprehensive bird's-eye view of the subject ever undertaken, with conclusions sure to startle the reader.

Pretty Good Read........2005-09-04
This is not your average UFO book, and it offers some new insights and detailed information not found anywhere else. It was clean, easy to read, and yet informative. There was no "fluff". I rate this book as a 4, and not a 5 because it held no awe-inspiring and jaw dropping information, however, it is most certainly a good read as I have indeed marked the pages quite substantially. I do recommend that this book be read.
Excellent Introduction to UFO and Psychic connection.......2005-06-09
If you have already read Jacques Vallee, John Keel, and John Mack and so are familiar with the idea of the possible connection between alien abduction/ufo phenom and psychic/dimensional realms, then this book will be a bit of a repeat but still worth reading because it brings together all these works and adds in lots of lesser known works while at the same time summarizing the major works by the mentioned authors.
If you are new to UFO abduction and the possible psychic connection, or if you have not ever heard of any explanation for ufo/abduction other than the visitors from planets in spaceships theory, then this book will really open your eyes to a side of ufo/abduction that makes lots of sense but is not so often talked about by mainstream ufo people who prefer to think of metallic craft from other planets or dimensions travelling to our universe.
Colin Wilson writes in an easy to read manner and does not fall prey to the weakness of making assertions that rule out other evidence. IN fact, he is a generous person when dealing with other individuals and their experiences, and is good at bringing up aspects of cases or unknown cases that get overlooked in other places.
This is especially a gem given the price of used copies. I recommend this highly.
PURE COLIN WILSON -FASCINATING BUT INCOMPLETE.......2004-04-11
In this fascinating book, the incredibly fertile mind of Colin Wilson analyzes the morass of data on every aspect of the UFO phenomenon. It is Wilson's synthesis of disparate sources that makes this book worthwhile, as he tries to pull together the many and seemingly unrelated unexplained phenomena such as crop circles, cattle mutilations, missing time, apparitions, poltergeists, and new theories of physics. He almost succeeds.
If you're a fan of Colin Wilson (as I am) you'll not be too put off by his unusual treatment of the subject. But if you have never considered the possibility that reality actually consists of much more than we perceive with our senses, never looked at the evidence for the existence of a spiritual world, then you might have problems following his logic. Once you accept the reality of other worlds that coexist with ours and occasionally break through to ours (ie, seeing ghosts), you can begin to understand the argument that UFOs might come from those other realities. But does that mean they are not solid objects? No, when they are in our reality, they are solid. Is there any technology involved? Yes, apparently so, but not in a way we can understand since we begin with the wrong assumptions.
Wilson draws heavily on the ideas of Jacques Vallee (also my favorite UFO writer) who relates the UFO experience to reports from past times of fairies, gnomes, elves, and "little people." In Vallee's estimation, we are wasting our time trying to figure out alien propulsion systems. We should be examining our own culture and our own consciousness to find out why we see and experience these things. Are they somehow built into us or are they built into the universe we inhabit and which our science has misunderstood?
Wilson provides a summary of Vallee's views on UFOs over the years he wrote about them beginning with his seminal work, Passport to Magonia. Vallee moved from France to America where he was an associate of Dr. J. Allen Hynek who is most remembered for declaring a series of sightings over western Michigan as "swamp gas." I live in Michigan and I well remember that incident. Everyone was indignant that sightings of numerous reliable witnesses were so easily (and stupidly!) dismissed, and the swamp gas excuse became a local joke. Wilson says the "swamp gas" episode was the beginning of a new public interest in UFOs. It was also the beginning of the realization that the US government did not intend to be honest with the public about UFOs.
Wilson has done a service in pointing out the similarity of UFOs to other strange phenomena. His relating them to what is usually called spiritualism is an especially good insight. There is a large and mostly unknown literature that sheds light on this spirit world. I was pleased to see Wilson is familiar with the works of Allan Kardec (also known as Leon Rivail). He wrote down what he learned from contact with advanced spirits, given through mediums, and what he learned is contained in The Spirits Book. The ideas in this book and his other writings have taken hold in Brazil, where they are the basis of the popular Spiritist movement. But Spiritism is not a "religion" as such. Most Spiritists are Christians, but they use contact with spirits (who are all around us) to help attain greater spiritual advancement. They also understand that spirits exist on numerous levels (or frequencies) and we attract spirits whose level of spiritual power is similar to our own. Bad attracts bad. Good attracts good. Spirits lie and deceive just like earth-bound humans. Wilson provides some stories of contactees who were given advance knowledge of events that actually came to pass, but then suddenly were given false information and ended up humiliated. One professor so duped by a spirit (or alien?) lost his academic job after predicting the end of the world.
Many characteristics of aliens and their powers seem to relate to the afterlife, where our own spirits go after physical death. This is exactly the conclusion of another UFO researcher, Raymond Fowler, who has spent a lifetime studying the case of Betty Andreason Luca, who was repeatedly abducted from childhood. Her aliens could go through walls, and Betty herself seemed to be taken both in and out of body. Her aliens seemed to use both technology and powers of mind. Fowler concludes that aliens come from our own afterlife, or to put it another way, they come from the invisible spirit world. They have learned how to break through to our own world. (I recommend The Watchers and The Watcher II by Raymond Fowler)
To what purpose are these aliens deceiving us? Wilson concludes that through our perception of and attempts to understand these anomolous happenings, mankind will be able to shift into a higher level of consciousness. These events help us "wake up" to a new vision of reality. This is a very different conclusion from those who see aliens as evil beings from Zeta Reticuli who intend to take over our planet.
While I loved this book, which was full of interesting stories and drew on so many rich concepts, Wilson's overall conclusions fall short. A new understanding of reality makes sense of many anomalous events, including a lot of incidents categorized as "UFO activity" but it doesn't deal with other aspects of the UFO problem. Wilson neatly avoids writing about Area 51 or the testimony of Bob Lazar who claims to have seen a flying saucer in a hangar there, where American technicians were trying to reverse engineer it. He seems to regard the Majestic 12 documents as forgeries, but does not give us any reasons why (other than a lame comment about Truman's signature). He does not deal with the obvious government cover-up of information relating to UFO sightings. None of these failures invalidate his main ideas, but we are left with an incomplete picture of the "what" and the "why" of UFOs. But maybe that just proves Wilson's thesis that it is our endless searching for answers that will bring us to a higher state of consciousness.
The UFOs: A New Study.......2002-01-16
Colin wilson has always tackled the most enigmatic mysteries of the world during most of his non-fiction books. He is one of the genius 20th century profilic researchers and writers. In this much interesting, albeit hard to fully digest, book, Wilson goes deeply into this riddle stating that it is the of our new generation unresolved mystery. It is so because, according to his view, the aliens have developed a more evolved mental capabilitie than ours. In addition, unlike other studies in the respect, he, having read more that 200 books about UFOs, comes to the conclusion that they are a kind of energy with the strange ability to change form and appear from nothing. This statement I have found the vaguest since it fails to explain the ability of this energy to abduct people and have leaves no energic effects behind them. However, as with his other books,Wilson is so cautious not to show his full scientific opinion for probably the fear that coming up with controversial conclusions without sound clues or bases may bring about the opposite hoped-for expectations that encounteted other writers. All in all, it is full of essential information that anyone can find useful, especially that last breathtaking chapter when he talks historicaaly about science and physics.
A must for Colin Wilson readers........2000-12-28
As with all of the books by this author that i have read donot let the title fool you. It may seem sensationalist but the core, as always, is not the enigma itself but our perception of it and how it relates to world in which we live. Backed by a truly enormous bibliography as in other reveiws the last chapter is indeed as always the best, however to grasp the meaning you have to read the rest.

Unbelievable, or Misunderstood?.......2003-11-16
Wow! What an incredible story Searchers tells. I wondered after reading it if it was Aliens that had abducted the Hesses or our own military doing desert warfare exercises in the Mojave. Could the "UFOs" be hover aircraft suited to travel above sand? The "red eyes" night vision goggles? And the "Aliens" soldiers in modern warfare, psy ops gas masks? Whatever it was that happened to Steve and Dawn Hess that night, it scared me for weeks.
Book Description
Power is a force that permeates the life of anyone on the journey toward perceptual freedom. It is a topic that also permeates literature on how to follow the Toltec tradition. But nowhere has Power been dealt with in such a singular and straightforward fashion by an everyday warrior/sorcerer who has made the journey of perceptual freedom the driving force of her life. Approaching the subject of Power in such a direct fashion in order for the reader to do the same is the aim of Encounter with Power. A Journey from the Toltec Perspective.
Because every warrior/sorcerer encounters Power without fail, the trick is in recognizing who, what, where, when and how to deal with this force when it shows itself. The fact that Power becomes evident can easily become eclipsed by its slippery, seductive nature and the oftentimes tumultuous impact it can have on the life of the warrior/sorcerer. Making decisions and taking action therefore become imperative. How then does the warrior/sorcerer proceed.
How the warrior/sorcerer takes on Power as a bona fide opponent that needs to be challenged, defeated, and then commanded at will, is at the heart of this book. Encounter with Power: A Journey from the Toltec Perspective is the chronicle of one woman's experience of challenging Power head on. The challenge to do the same subsequently transfers to the reader. An invitation to action is woven throughout the book and is designed to propel the reader into their own definitive encounter with Power.
